Hubag Bohol,

My understanding of "hiyus" is to relieve. It can also mean "deflate" like deflating a tire. The comfort room is a place to relieve ourselves of physical discomfort. Mao nga I coined this word "lawak pahiyusan." thanks

Bay Tars,

Salamat sa pagpatin-aw. Usahay man god naay unintended comic effect and atong coinage. In the case of "hiyus", my own experience with our language tells me that "shrink" or "deflate" is the meaning of the word that first comes to mind. In fact, "hiyus" to mean "relieve" is rather quaint to me. More precisely, I have to admit it's a new one on me. Thus I mentioned "lawak pahuwasan", "huwas" being--to my mind--closer to "relieve" than "hiyus" is.

Best regards,
HB

Apan matod pa ni Edmund Spenser,

"Where is the antique glory now become,
What whilom wont in women to appear?
Where be the brave achievements doen by some?
Where be the battles, where the shield and spear,
And all the conquests, which them high did rear,
That matter made for famous poet's verse,
And boastful men so oft abashed to hear?
Bene theyall dead, and laid in doleful hearse?
Or doen they only sleep, and shall again reverse?"

Otherwise as a reward of all your good deeds in life, mao na kung lower caste ka sa imong past life, mahimo kang higher caste sa imong 2nd life of maka reincarnate ka depende sa imong gusto.

Di pud tingali apil ang socializing nato diri sa TB no? Kay ug masobraan, makalangan sa trabaho, makasakit sa mata ug tudlo.

Naa lang ko'y observation sa internet-age socializing nato. Last night, the Pinoy academic community in our city had a dinner with UP guests visiting Japan for a conference. Nakurat ko kay there was a big turnout of students, most of whom I did not know. On the spot, I was asked to speak a few words to adjourn the gathering. Since I was caught off guard, I just shared my surprise that I walked into dinner that night expecting a very familiar crowd. Since we communicate thru our e-group everyday, I was so sure I knew all the names, the personalities (kinsay kalog, kinsay seryoso, kinsay mahilig politika, etc.)

To my surprise, when I walked into the venue, I was straining to connect the faces with the names, kay dili man tanan naa'y avatar nga tinuod ang portrait. I said that these days, we could all move and live in the same physical area without interacting face to face, kay didto pa ta moatubang sa computer. This was so unlike our "socializing" many years ago nga real warm bodies held picnics, sportsfests, guys had academic discussion over beer, etc. Ang tendency before was that I could forget the names, but I immediately recognized the faces. Karon, mas familiar ang names ug usernames--and when you meet them in an actual setting or what we call EB, I strain to connect the faces with the names. Naa'y social disorientation. But there is no doubt that our internet social networks can be used to mobilize people with lesser communication cost. In fact,  we were able to kickstart a donation drive for the typhoon Ondoy with such a number.

While maintaining our cyber-circles, where we have a lot of friends who choose to remain incognito, I think it is still healthier to have a community of real people. Kita-kita bitaw tang tanan pohon.

I agree with you, Bay Ben. In cyber-circles we are tempted to assume the identities of the saints (or sinners) we have failed to become; in face-to-face contacts it would take a generous dose of deceit to succeed in concealing our workaday selves.

Kinsa toy nag-ingon nga ang sa Philippines, too fast, too furious? Unsa man diay kadali as per her experience, 30 seconds? ;D

Furious, maybe, but I'm not too sure about fast. After all, I guess individual differences matter more than national averages (if at all scientifically established).

Here's a quoted from www. basrt.org.uk:

"Pornography also suggests that sex lasts for hours. Again, sex can last from anything from a matter of seconds to days depending on what you are doing and how you define 'sex'! A lot of men are concerned with how long it takes them to get an orgasm, often worrying that it is too quick. Again this can vary immensely, but the sex researcher Alfred Kinsey found that the average length of time for an American man was 2-7 minutes."

Why some women go back to their abusers
By Elizabeth Landau
CNN

(CNN) -- A middle-of-the-night fight, a surprise pullout from the Grammy Awards, leaked photos, a police investigation -- new pieces of the puzzle of the alleged assault of pop singer Rihanna by her boyfriend Chris Brown have been emerging since early February.

Singers Rihanna and Chris Brown, shown performing in December, are rumored to be back together.

Then, nearly three weeks after the alleged battery, the couple was reportedly together again. The reconciliation was reported just days before Brown's arraignment, which is expected Thursday in Los Angeles, California.

Brown, 19, has issued an apology for "what transpired" but neither he nor Rihanna, who just turned 21, has directly addressed the allegations.

Many would ask why anyone would return to an abusive partner after leaving, but therapists who treat both abusers and victims say it's common.

The effect is like a "pendulum of pain," said Steven Stosny, counselor and founder of the anger and violence management program CompassionPower, which treats people convicted of abuse in the home.

Abuse victims will "leave out of either fear, anger or resentment," he said. "But then, after the fear, anger or resentment begins to subside, they feel guilt, shame, anxiety, and that takes them back."

After a violent incident, there is often a "honeymoon period" during which the abuser may apologize profusely, give the victim gifts and persuade the victim to stay, experts say. But when that period is over, the abuser may once again become violent.

The reasons for returning to an abusive partner may relate to the days of early humans, who had to fend for themselves in the wild. The powerful psychological mechanisms that lead people to stay in abusive relationships may have developed for survival reasons, Stosny said.

"To leave an attachment relationship -- a relationship where there's an emotional bond -- meant certain death by starvation or saber-tooth tiger," he said.

Abuse happens in both low-income and high-income couples, said Joanna Snawder, who counsels students and community members at the Metropolitan State College of Denver in Colorado. A wealthy woman who has never worked may not want to change her lifestyle, while a poor woman may be financially dependent on her boyfriend or husband.

Regardless, women may not want to break off an abusive relationship because they are afraid to be independent, don't know how to take care of themselves or don't want to face shame from friends and family, she said.

Sometimes the abuser can get his partner to stay with him through manipulation, for instance, telling a woman that he will kill himself if she leaves him, said Mark Crawford, a clinical psychologist based in Roswell, Georgia. Crawford has seen many women stay in relationships because they couldn't bear the guilt of an outcome such as this.

"There are some women who need to be needed so badly they'll put up with anything," Crawford said. "Even if the guy beats the crap out of them, they just feel that responsible for the other person."

The term "the cycle of abuse" is often used to describe how coming from an abusive family is believed to make an individual more likely to be an abuser or to stay in an abusive relationship. "Unless we do a lot of psychological work, we often repeat family structures and dynamics that seem normal to us," Snawder said.

On the other hand, some people who grow up in abusive households do not repeat the behavior they saw at home, she said.

One student Snawder advises voluntarily went back to her abusive boyfriend after having a restraining order placed against him. They are together, but the man is assaulting the young woman again.

"It's really important that a woman reach out and get support from friends, family or a counselor who can help her see that she doesn't have to go back to that relationship," she said.

Men aren't always the abusers. There are relationships in which the woman is the abuser and the man is the victim, and all of the behavioral patterns happen in reverse. For instance, the woman makes the man feel like it's his fault for being beaten, Crawford said.

"Those men just don't have the sense of self to say 'This is not acceptable,'" he said.

Stosny's celebrity clients who have been abusive to their romantic partners may have been negatively affected by their rise to fame early in life, he said. They see themselves as above others, and feel they are entitled to punch someone whenever they feel like it.

"I had one professional basketball player who sexually assaulted a girl. He really in his heart didn't believe that she didn't want to have sex with him," Stosny said.

Can there ever be a happy ending for an abusive relationship? Experts agree that it's unusual, but a relationship in which a partner has been violent can become healthy again if, and only if, the abusive person seeks counseling to change his or her mindset.

"If you don't believe that you have a problem, and you believe the person drove you to it, you're going to have a really hard time seeing that you have a problem," Snawder said.

In practice, however, the victim usually just needs to move on to someone else, she said.

He he, bitaw, Bay Ben, I guess ang negative connotation sa "Jesuitic"--meaning, maajong mogamit og confusing or ambiguous words to deceive others--maoy nahimong "switik". Ambot nganong naingon ni ani. It must be because Jesuits are usually scholars (read: over-educated, he he) that their name has become associated with craftiness.

As for Socrates, well, he was a vain man whose vanity is worth a thousand modesties in any imaginable universe. Most other vanities are not even worth one unit of computer memory.

Diha baja koy kaila kaniadto nga pari ang tirada. Nakapagawas sijag duha ka pari so far. I heard nga karon, elderly priest ang ijang ongoing victim. Dili na pud tingali ning paria mogawas kay hapit na man mo-retire. Unja ang baje is in her 40s na, kalma na tingali pud.

Dogma-wise (doctrines ba) most of the church's teaching tinuod is immutable (permanent, cannot be changed) because they're based on natural law. Pero duna say mga gitawag ug human precepts (man made/enacted laws) that could change in time or with leadership or because of updated developments (di jud nuon ni madali-dali). I just hope you know how to distinguish between the two of them because they are a world apart as well as they're implications! Remember the words of Jesus on these (but I don't want to get into details): "Laws are made for man, not man made for the law."
Salamat ani nga pahinumdom, Fr. Chic. It seems to me that blind zealotry can be more injurious than lack of faith.

Celibate- (sil-ay-bate): playing with something using one's hands

Maybe it's not yet dead. Maybe its being subjected to artificial respiration. ;D

Seriously, I can't speak for other countries, but in the Philippines one has to admit that the communist movement as we know it has become woefully irrelevant. Romantics might whine that we missed a golden opportunity, but most of us will just have to confront the shape that history has taken.

The Sexiest Scent for Women

By Laurel House, Planet Green

Men: if you want to get your lady in the mood, skip the chemically-infused cologne or pesticide-laden roses, and find some black licorice instead. Yes, the scent of the natural botanical is said to stimulate a woman’s libido more than any other aroma.

A study, conducted by Alan R. Hirsch, neurological director of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, revealed that women who were exposed to the scent of licorice had a 13 percent increase in bloodflow to their sexual organs compared to a 1 percent reduction from the scent of men’s cologne. Though the exact reason that licorice arouses women is unclear, Hirsch believes that it is either an unexplained chemical reaction in the brain or olfactory-evoked nostalgia.

Next time you plan an enchanting evening, nevermind that contrived concept that “every woman loves roses” and instead serve your sweetie a cup of organic licorice tea and all-natural licorice candies for dessert. Good luck!

Bay Ben, Tigs, ug Tars,

Padayon mo sa inyong proyekto. Dili man nako linya ning paggama og diksyunaryo, pero motikdol-tikdol lang kog suggestions every now and then. I'm a generalist who is fortunate (unfortunate?) enough to be able to stay that way, but I'm genuinely interested in the preservation and propagation of our native tongue. Sorry kay na-Iningles, he he.

As a point of departure, two books bear scrutiny: An English-Cebuano Visayan Dictionary, by Rodolfo Cabonce, S.J. (Mandaluyong City: National Book Store, 1983), and A Dictionary of Cebuano Visayan, by John U. Wolff, Ph.D. ( Ithaca, N.Y.: Southeast Asia Program, Cornell University, 1972.) Kapin sa libo ang pahina sa either book.

Kining kang Fr. Cabonce morag bali ni kay English to Cebuano man ni. Mapalit ning libroha sa any NBS outlet. Morag nadato na ani and NBS kay hapit man kada tuig naay reprint. Ang kang Wolff dugay nang out of stock. Naay kopya ani sa Cebuano Studies Center sa University of San Carlos.

Sa akong tan-aw, ang gibuhat ni Fr. Cabonce simple kaayo: nagkuha siyag existing English dictionary unya gipangitaan niyag Cebuano equivalents. Daghang sipyat ning iyang libro, pero ang iyang virtue naa sa richness in synonyms.

Ang kang Wolff was done methodically (the book was his doctoral dissertation). Nag-hire siyag researchers who collected words, which he then proceeded to define after considering various submissions from his researchers. He even conducted experiments about pronunciation, etc. Usa sa nakaapan sa trabaho ni Wolff kay daghang naapil nga short-lived words and meanings nga karon after almost 40 years dili na nato masabtan. Unya dihay daghang suok sa Cebuano-speaking world nga wala maabti sa research.

Actually, naay daghang attempts karon at compiling a Cebuano dictionary. In fact there are several websites containing Cebuano word lists (e.g., www.binisaya.com), though these are mostly incomplete. Tinuod, it's high time nga naay definitive Cebuano dictionary. Anyway, it would perhaps be more advisable to first review existing literature and just fill in the gaps, rather than reinvent the wheel.

Best regards,
Hubs
