To Sleep
BY JOHN KEATS

O soft embalmer of the still midnight,
Shutting, with careful fingers and benign,
Our gloom-pleas'd eyes, embower'd from the light,
      Enshaded in forgetfulness divine:
O soothest Sleep! if so it please thee, close
In midst of this thine hymn my willing eyes,
Or wait the "Amen," ere thy poppy throws
Around my bed its lulling charities.
Then save me, or the passed day will shine
Upon my pillow, breeding many woes,â€"
Save me from curious Conscience, that still lords
Its strength for darkness, burrowing like a mole;
Turn the key deftly in the oiled wards,
And seal the hushed Casket of my Soul.

History / Akkad
April 30, 2015, 11:34:22 PM
by Joshua J. Mark

Map of the Akkadian Empire (Nareklm)

No one knows where the city of Akkad was located, how it rose to prominence, or how, precisely, it fell; yet once it was the seat of the Akkadian Empire which ruled over a vast expanse of the region of ancient Mesopotamia. It is known that Akkad (also given as Agade) was a city located along the western bank of the Euphrates River possibly between the cities of Sippar and Kish (or, perhaps, between Mari and Babylon or, even, elsewhere along the Euphrates). According to legend, it was built by the king Sargon the Great (who ruled 2334-2279 BCE) who unified Mesopotamia under the rule of his Akkadian Empire and set the standard for future forms of government in Mesopotamia. Sargon (or his scribes) claimed that the Akkadian Empire stretched from the Persian Gulf through modern-day Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan, Syria (possibly Lebanon) through the lower part of Asia Minor to the Mediterranean Sea and Cyprus (there is also a claim it stretched as far as Crete in the Aegean). While the size and scope of the empire based in Akkad is disputed, there is no doubt that Sargon the Great created the first multi-national empire in the world.

Fun fact: Carhenge is set to line up perfectly with a total solar eclipse in 2017, so now's the perfect time to start planning your visit if you really want to catch an incredible sight.

While it's certainly the centerpiece, the druidic tribute isn't the only strange thing on the property. There's also a "Car Art Preserve" populated with plenty of art projects created with vehicle bits and pieces, and even a little graveyard dedicated to three foreign cars buried on the grounds. A full vehicle serves as their makeshift gravestone, reading: "Here lie three bones of foreign cars. They served our purpose while Detroit slept. Now Detroit is awake and America's great!"

Paying homage to Stonehenge, Carhenge has been fascinating people since its installation in the '80s. Dreamed up by Jim Reinders as a memorial to his father, Carhenge consists of a circle of cars with a heel stone, slaughter stone, and two station stones within the circle. In fact, it's a near perfect match to its counterpart across a pond, thanks to Reinder's extensive studies of Stonehenge while living in England.

Yangcheng hairy crabs are the most expensive crabs in China, so it’s no surprise that people would try to pass off regular crabs as the pricier breed. The real deal comes exclusively from Yangcheng Lake, but there are a few sneaky ways around that. For example, some sellers take water from Yangcheng Lake and put other crabs in it for several hours before selling them as Yangchengs. Others use chemicals on the crabs to make them look like Yangcheng crabs.

Only 1 in every 300 Yangcheng hairy crabs sold is real. The total number of crabs produced from Yangcheng is less than 3,000 tons annually, but more than 100,000 tons of crabs are sold. To counter the fake crabs, the Suzhou Crab Business Association demanded that a plastic ring with a special numerical code be attached to one of the claws of each original Yangcheng hairy crab. That plan soon failed when sellers of the real Yangcheng hairy crabs sold their tags to those selling fakes. -- http://listverse.com/

Science and Research / Re: Mass Extinctions
April 28, 2015, 09:38:06 AM
One of the main culprits in the sixth extinction, Kolbert says, is climate change, but modern agriculture and a rapidly growing human population have contributed as well. By warming the planet, introducing invasive species to different areas, and encouraging the spread of previously contained fungi and viruses, people are killing the life around us.

Here's Kolbert:

"No creature has ever altered life on the planet in this way before, and yet other, comparable events have occurred. Very, very occasionally in the distant past, the planet has undergone change so wrenching that the diversity of life has plummeted. Five of these ancient events were catastrophic enough that they're put in their own category: the so-called Big Five. In what seems like a fantastic coincidence, but is probably no coincidence at all, the history of these events is recovered just as people come to realize that they are causing another one."

We know what mass extinctions look like. And a growing number of scientists have agreed that we are likely causing a new one.

Yet we are doing surprisingly little to curb the tide.

"It is estimated," Kolbert writes, "that one-third of all reef-building corals, a third of all fresh-water mollusks, a third of sharks and rays, a quarter of all mammals, a fifth of all reptiles, and a sixth of all birds are headed towards oblivion."

That adds up to between 30% and 50% of all life on Earth that could be gone by the end of the century â€" unless we start taking action now.

Science and Research / Re: Mass Extinctions
April 28, 2015, 09:37:36 AM
At least that's how Elizabeth Kolbert, the author of "The Sixth Extinction," sees it.

"We are deciding," Kolbert writes, "without quite meaning to, which evolutionary pathways will remain open and which will forever be closed. No other creature has ever managed this, and it will, unfortunately, be our most enduring legacy."

In "The Sixth Extinction," Kolbert traces our understanding of extinction from the first time it was proposed as a theory in the 1740s until now, with scientists mostly agreeing that humans may be causing it.

It took scientists a long time to accept that entire species could disappear.

It used to be that when researchers came across old animal bones, their first goal was to identify them with a species that already existed. In 1739, for example, when a group of researchers unearthed the first Mastodon bones, they assumed they were looking at the remains of two different animals â€" an elephant and a hippopotamus.

It wasn't until French naturalist Georges Cuvier suggested that the bones were from "a world previous to ours" that researchers first started to consider the idea that an entire species could have existed and then disappeared.

This realization should awaken us to the idea that our impact on the planet could have serious implications.

Earth is on the edge of a Sixth Extinction
Business Insider
By Erin Brodwin

Close to half of all living species on the Earth could disappear by the end of this century, and humans will be the cause.

This is the Sixth Mass Extinction â€" a loss of life that could rival the die-out that caused the dinosaurs to disappear 65 millions years ago after an asteroid hit the planet.

This time, though, we’re the asteroid.

Science and Research / Mass Extinctions
April 28, 2015, 09:31:58 AM
Time periods in the history of life on Earth during which exceptionally large numbers of species go extinct are called mass extinctions. These extinctions are quite different from the rate of extinction, which occurs even when the diversity of life is increasing. Many species vanished in five cataclysmic mass extinctions and today, 99.9 percent of all species that have existed on Earth are extinct.

China on Monday said it was willing to work with ASEAN but defended the island-building as being within its "sovereign" territory.

"The accusations made by some countries against China are not reasonable," a foreign ministry spokesman said.

Philippine President Benigno Aquino told fellow regional leaders on Monday that China's actions violate a non-binding 2002 pledge by rival maritime claimants to avoid actions that inflame tensions.

China also is widely believed to be dragging its feet in discussions on turning the earlier pledge into a binding Code of Conduct, so that it can buy time to cement its control at sea.

Aquino said Beijing's actions "pose a threat to the freedom of global commerce and navigation" and cause irreparable harm to the marine environment.

Malaysia brushed aside suggestions of a stern response that could antagonise China, but its Prime Minister Najib Razak appealed to Beijing to avoid destabilising actions.

"We hope to be able to influence China that it is also to their interest not to be seen as confronting ASEAN and that any attempt to destabilise this region will not benefit China either," he said.

Despite its unity rhetoric, ASEAN members have diverging agendas, and the bloc avoids pushing China too hard on behalf of its members.

Beijing holds immense trade and diplomatic leverage over ASEAN countries, most of which have no stake in the maritime disputes.

The Philippines and Vietnam have experienced the most direct face-offs with China at sea, including a number of tense confrontations in recent years.

Ian Storey, an analyst with the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore, said the ASEAN statement was "quite strong" compared to mild past versions.

But he added: "The statement will do absolutely nothing to dissuade China from completing its reclamation programme."
#8668
Along with Taiwan, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member-states Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei claim parts of the sea, which is rich in energy reserves and fishery resources, and is a vital conduit for much of world trade.

Satellite photos released earlier this month provided fresh evidence of the scale of the Chinese programme, depicting a flotilla of vessels dredging sand onto a feature known as Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands.

- China projects its power -

Similar work is taking place at a handful of other sites, according to defence analysts, who say the construction drive will give China a permanent forward presence far out at sea from which to project its growing power.

The closing statement by Malaysia -- which holds the rotating chair of 10-member ASEAN this year -- instructs the region's foreign ministers to "urgently address this matter" under dialogue mechanisms set up between the bloc and China.

But it stopped just short of a call by the Philippine foreign secretary, who on Sunday challenged ASEAN to "finally stand up" to Beijing by demanding an immediate halt to the reclamation.

Langkawi (Malaysia) (AFP) - Reclamation work in the disputed South China Sea, where China has constructed an airstrip and other structures on coral reefs, threatens to "undermine peace, security and stability" in the region, Southeast Asian leaders warned Monday.

Beijing's assertion of sovereignty over almost all the sea -- also claimed in parts by several other Asian nations -- has set off alarm bells with its neighbours and beyond as China stakes its claim with growing boldness.

A statement to be issued at the close of the one-day summit in Malaysia notes "serious concerns" over land reclamation on reefs whose sovereignty is contested. The work has triggered fears of tightening Chinese control over the seaway.

"We share the serious concerns expressed by some leaders on the land reclamation being undertaken in the South China Sea, which has eroded trust and confidence and may undermine peace, security and stability," said the statement by summit chair Malaysia, seen by AFP, which did not mention China by name.

History / Augur
April 27, 2015, 11:29:51 PM

Fancy a bit of bird-watching, along with the opportunity to influence an almost-infinite sphere of affairs? Try being an augur. The “augur” was a term given to a Roman diviner who would read the will of the gods in the flight patterns or songs of the birds. The position was also called the “auspex.” It’s thought that later on, the term “auspex” was used when talking about the actual act of observing the birds, while “augur” was the act of assigning meaning to their actions.

During large sections of history, nothing happened before a diviner was consulted, and that gave augurs enormous power. The argument went that since the gods were known to care for men, they must be sending signs to help them in whatever way they could. Not listening to those that had been blessed with the gift of interpreting the will of the gods was to be nothing less than an atheist, but each nation soon developed their own sort of trademarked method of divination. At the time of the augur, the Romans thought astrology was a pretty risky pastime, but their version of the auspicia was sacred.

The idea of watching birds and telling the future from their flight patterns pre-dates Rome, but Romans were the ones to establish a set of firm guidelines and rules around the practice. Birds were sacred to Jupiter, they were his messengers, and therefore, they were the ones passing along guidance. Ravens and crows were studied by augurs called the “Oscines,” who listened to their calls and interpreted their speech, while the flight of eagles and vultures was studied by the “Alites.” Military matters were up to the auspices who read the behavior of chickens around feeding time. -- http://listverse.com/

Surging demand

However, the trend of better-paid employees in Cebu doesn’t follow that of supervisors and managers. Jobstreet said the average salary for these kind of employees is lower than that of their national counterparts, particularly in Manila, but IT continues to be the best-paying specialization for both position levels.

“The demand for IT (skills) is surging. There are a lot of jobs available, but in terms of quality, the supply is low,” Buyco said.

The official said Jobstreet is feeding the Department of Labor and Employment and the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency its own labor-related statistics.

Currently, there are 20,000 companies posting at JobStreet and 100,000 jobs available to date.

At present, the most in-demand jobs for fresh graduates are customer service positions, particularly workers for business process outsourcing companies. -- http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/business/2015/04/15/

These findings cover fresh graduates, junior executives, managers, and supervisors. Jobstreet served 300,000 job candidates in Cebu out of 500,000 in Central Visayas. Over a thousand companies in Cebu are listed in Jobstreet, with 5,000 postings daily.

“The top three highest paying specializations (for fresh graduates) in Cebu are the same as with the rest of the country,” Jobstreet said. These are in IT and computer software; IT and computer network or database administration; and technical and help desk support.

Yoda Buyco, Jobstreet Philippines marketing director, explained that Cebuano IT workers are mostly employed by large BPO companies, which tend to offer higher salaries to attract more jobseekers.

In Metro Manila, IT workers are employed in different industries and in both local and foreign companies.

Even among junior executives or employees, those with one to four years of experience get a better average pay compared to others in the same level nationally.

The highest paying job for junior executives in Cebu are the technical and help desk support workers, who have average salaries of P38,163. This is followed by those working in IT-computer software at P32,199, corporate finance or merchant banking at P30,759, IT-computer hardware at P30,455 and IT-computer network or database administration at P27,754.

INFORMATION Technology (IT) workers in Cebu receive higher average salary than their counterparts anywhere else in the country, even surpassing that of Metro Manila, an online job site reported.

JobStreet.com, in its 2015 Cebu Salary Report that was presented yesterday to the local press, said fresh graduates in Cebu working in IT and computer software get paid an average of P25,483 a month. This is P1,534 higher than what a fresh graduate with the same specialization receives in other parts of the country.

The figures in the salary report are based on Jobstreet’s data for its Cebu listings from October to December 2014. The online portal encourages employers to disclose the minimum and maximum salary offer.

Common sense and good wound care are the best ways to prevent a bacterial skin infection.

Keep draining or open wounds covered with clean, dry bandages until healed.

Don't delay first aid of even minor, non-infected wounds like blisters, scrapes or any break in the skin.

If you have an open wound or active infection, avoid common-use sites like whirlpools, hot tubs and swimming pools until infections are healed.

Wash hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand rub if washing is not possible.

Symptoms

The symptoms often start within hours after an injury and may seem like another illness or injury. Some people infected with necrotizing fasciitis may complain of pain or soreness, similar to that of a "pulled muscle." The skin may be warm with red or purplish areas of swelling that spread rapidly. There may be ulcers, blisters or black spots on the skin. Patients often describe their pain as severe and way out of proportion to how the painful area looks when examined by a doctor. Fever, chills, fatigue (tiredness) or vomiting may follow the initial wound or soreness. These confusing symptoms may delay a person from seeking medical attention quickly. If you think you may have these symptoms after a wound, see a doctor right away.

Causes

Most cases occur randomly and are not linked to similar infections in others. The most common way of getting necrotizing fasciitis is when the bacteria enter the body through a break in the skin, like a cut, scrape, burn, insect bite, or puncture wound. Most people who get necrotizing fasciitis have other health problems that may lower their body's ability to fight infection. Some of these conditions include diabetes, kidney disease, cancer, or other chronic health conditions that weaken the body's immune system.

If you're healthy, have a strong immune system, and practice good hygiene and proper wound care, your chances of getting necrotizing fasciitis are extremely low.

In cases of necrotizing fasciitis, bacteria spread rapidly once they enter the body. They infect flat layers of a membrane known as the fascia, connective bands of tissue that surround muscles, nerves, fat, and blood vessels. The infection also damages the tissues next to the fascia.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a serious bacterial infection that spreads rapidly and destroys the body's soft tissue. Commonly called a "flesh-eating infection" by the media, this rare disease can be caused by more than one type of bacteria. These include group A Streptococcus (group A strep), Klebsiella, Clostridium, E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Aeromonas hydrophila, among others. Group A strep is considered the most common cause of necrotizing fasciitis.

Usually, infections from group A strep bacteria are generally mild or moderate and are easily treated. But sometimes toxins made by these bacteria destroy the tissue they infect, causing it to die. ("Necrotizing" means "causing the death of tissues.") Accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment with antibiotics through a vein and surgery are important.
