Men looking to lower the risk they run of dying at a premature age can now do something by means of preventing that, a new piece in the Daily Mail suggests. Based on numbers registered in Sweden, researchers have concluded that fathers who take paternity leave after a child is born are exposed to a decreased risk of dying prematurely â€" by as much as 25 percent.

As of now, there is no serious data backing this up, says the British publication. However, it is believed that men who take two months off work to stay at home with the newborn baby also start taking better care of themselves, thus are in better health than those who continue working. They eat better, sleep better and are more focused on their family instead of on distractions. Not only that, but they also avoid running unnecessary risks and are under considerably less stress than the fathers who work.

“Fathers who take paternity leave live longer, experts say. According to their study, taking up to two months off work when a baby is born lowers a man’s risk of dying prematurely by almost 25 per cent. Their research is based on the health and habits of men in Sweden, the first country to give new fathers paid time off work. And the experts say encouraging men to take time off when their child is born may help to close the gender gap in longevity. At the moment, men live on average five to seven years fewer than women,” the Mail writes. - source: Softpedia.com

That scientists and health experts believe portable music players and the habit of listening to music wherever we go very detrimental to our health is not news. Though the voices saying this is nothing but gross exaggeration are many, a new study comes to show that even as little as one hour of listening to music on an MP3 player, with earphones on at high volume is very dangerous in terms of what it does to our hearing, the Daily Mail points out.

Though previous studies underlined that limited time on the earphones could significantly reduce hearing damage, new research demonstrates that as little as an hour is enough to do harm, especially if we play music at high volumes. The study included two groups: one of 21 people aged 19-28 who were exposed to pop and rock on their MP3 players at different volumes for no more than an hour, and another that was the control group, which was not exposed to music at all. The results showed that those in the first group stood to suffer from hearing damage in the long run.

“It is well known that excessive occupational noise exposure can lead to noise-induced hearing loss. Excessive noise exposure can lead to metabolic and mechanical effects resulting in alterations of the structural elements of the inner ear that contains auditory sensory cells or ‘hair cells.’ The primary damage is concentrated on the outer hair cells, which are more vulnerable to acoustic over-stimulation than inner hair cells,” lead researcher Hannah Kempler says of the findings.

Science and Research / Benefits of Coffee
June 24, 2010, 09:29:37 PM
Over the past few decades, numerous scientific studies have linked moderate coffee consumption to a host of beneficial effects, ranging from decreased risk of cancer, to improving memory, boosting cognition, and preventing the onset of neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. A recent investigation demonstrates in clear-cut terms that consuming coffee actually hinders the development of cancer in the mouth and throat, LiveScience  reports.

In the experiments, it was demonstrated that people who consume more than 4 cups of coffee each day had a 39 percent lower chance of developing cancer later on in life, the investigators behind the research say. These results were drawn by comparing a study sample of coffee drinkers with a group of persons that did not consume the stuff. Details of the recent study are published in the latest issue of the esteemed scientific journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.

“Coffee contains more than a thousand chemicals, some of which have antioxidant and antimutagenic activities. Further research is necessary to identify which ingredients in coffee are responsible for the results we observed in our study,” told Life's Little Mysteries University of Utah assistant professor of medicine Mia Hashibe. She was also the lead researcher on the investigation. The new findings are in tune with previous work, presented last year at the 2009 American Association for Cancer Research Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research Conference. - source: Softpedia.com

One aspect of the IT industry is that it is always evolving. The other is that it has always been among the primary sources of toxic waste, otherwise known as e-waste. Electronics have a certain lifespan, after which they get defected and inevitably end up in garbage dumps. Some products get recycled, but there is a range of materials and substances that can be classified as toxic through their very nature. These substances have the potential of turning any product, at least partially, into the bane of life. LCDs have long been among the top-ranking potentially hazardous items on the market.

Liquid Crystal Displays classify as hazardous because they utilize a range of toxic chemicals, such as halogens and mercury, among other things. Granted, makers of such devices have come up with ecological substitutes for most of them, as is evident by the various Green LCDs on sale. PVA, however, the polyvinyl-alcohol inside LCD TVs and monitors, cannot so easily be replaced. Knowing this, a team of scientists from the University of York decided they would, instead, make something useful out of it.

Apparently, heating the PVA, then cooling and dehydrating it with ethanol leads to the appearance of a surface area of mesoporous material. This material has a high medicinal potential because, either on its own or when combined with silver nanoparticles, it can slay microbes, and even more troublesome life-ending things such as E.coli.

Technology / Internet Explorer IE 9
June 24, 2010, 09:09:38 PM
The latest development milestone of Internet Explorer 9 is extremely close to acing the Acid3 Test. Microsoft has made consistent improvements in terms of achieving the same markup vision, and this has inherently resulted in a boosted Acid3 Test score. Early adopters and developers can now download Internet Explorer 9  (IE9) Platform Preview 3 Build 1.9.7.8.74.6000 and run Acid3. The latest developer preview of the browser will go as high as 83 out of 100.

“Some people use Acid3 as a shorthand for standards. Acid3 tests about 100 fragments of a dozen different technologies. Some are still in ‘under construction.’ Some of the patterns, like SMIL animations, are inconsistent with others, like CSS3 animations, and need to be reconciled. As we continue to implement the standards that developers have told us they value most, the Acid3 score continues to rise, and we’re not done,” Dean Hachamovitch, general manager, Internet Explorer, revealed.

Internet Explorer 9 has jumped no less than 15 points between Platform Preview 2 and Platform Preview 3, Build 1.9.7.8.74.6000, which was released for download on June 23rd, 2010. The software giant now offers better support for modern web standards including HTML5, CSS3, SVG 1.1 and DOM, improvements that result in a higher Acid3 Test score. Of course that Microsoft is aiming to reach for the perfect 100/100 and will get to that level with the final release of Internet Explorer 9. - source: Softpedia.com

Filipino seafarers are now perceived by many as among the best in the world, an international maritime official said on Thursday.

Graham Young, International Transport of Workers Federation (ITF) head of Maritime Operations in London said the Filipino mariners, which accounts for 25 per cent of the entire seafarers manning the merchant shipping fleet of the world, are being looked up because of their professionalism and unparalleled commitment towards work.

“There is now high regard for Filipino seamen. And with the strong supervision and support from (your) government, they will continue to demonstrate competence, professionalism and even bravery as risks and hazards are so inherent in their jobs,’’ Young told the Bulletin. - Manila Bulletin (source)

Millions of England fans have watched England win their crunch World Cup match against Slovenia.

The result prompted celebrations across the country, where many businesses and schools had made special arrangements for people to watch the match.

The 1-0 victory saw England qualify for the second round in South Africa, following a strike from Jermaine Defoe.

But thousands of fans in south-west London and Salford missed the match as power cuts affected homes.

If it is true, then bad. If it is not true, then good.

But the heart of the argument is not whether it is true or not because we already know that if it is not true, then it is good.

The real issue is whether it is good or bad that a relative (or sister) of a president should involve in electing a senate president. This is the heart of the argument.

USA and Canada / Gen McChrystal Fired by Obama
June 24, 2010, 07:28:27 AM
The commander of multinational forces in Afghanistan, Gen Stanley McChrystal, has been dismissed by US President Barack Obama after critical comments about senior administration officials.

He will be replaced by Gen David Petraeus, who led the "surge" in Iraq.

Mr Obama insisted it was "a change in personnel but not a change in policy".

In a profile in Rolling Stone magazine, Gen McChrystal and aides were quoted as making disparaging remarks about Mr Obama and senior colleagues.

The Philippines and nine other members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will discuss the future of 28 Heritage Parks, three located in the country, through effective management and conservation during the Third ASEAN Heritage Parks Conference to be held in Brunei Darussalam from June 23 to 25.

The establishment of ASEAN Heritage Parks in 1984 aims to conserve the national protected areas of ASEAN member-countries, by drawing up a master plan for each heritage park, which will include management guidelines, research on structure and function of ecosystems and education on wilderness values.

Officials of the Philippines’ three ASEAN Heritage Parks will join park managers from ASEAN member-countries, officials of national agencies involved in protected area management, the ASEAN Secretariat, and the Philippine-based ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) in the conference.

“The conference hopes to enhance the regional action plan and strategies for ASEAN Heritage Parks. We will also identify, discuss, and prioritize activities such as capacity development and public awareness activities to enhance on-the-ground management of the parks,” said Rodrigo Fuentes, executive director of the European Union-assisted ACB.

The Department of Education (DepEd) is now prohibiting all students of public and private elementary and secondary schools from going to computer shops, malls, theaters, and other similar establishments during class hours.

To carry out the ban effectively, Education Secretary Mona Valisno said school officials and teachers concerned should communicate and coordinate with their respective local government officials so that both parties could work on a possible enactment or implementation of the appropriate legislation to implement this.

“These legislations may be in the form of regulating the distance of computer shops, malls, theaters and the likes from schools,” she said.

The directive may also be sent to the owners of these establishments not to allow entry of students during their respective class hours. “The LGUs can ask the owners of these shops and malls to check first the class schedules of the student trying to enter the establishment,” she said.

Valisno said schools should accordingly provide their students with certified copies of their respective class schedules.

A prominent hotelier in Cebu City was killed in an ambush Tuesday night, barely 24 hours after the failed attempt on his brother’s life.

Manuel Ting, owner of the Parklane Hotel in Cebu City, died from multiple gunshot wounds at the Chong Hua Hospital at 7:30 p.m., according to Chief Insp. George Ylanan of the Cebu City Police Office.

Ting was driving his silver-gray Mercedes Benz along F. Llamas Street in front of the new Gaisano Capital mall in Barangay Tisa, Cebu City and was slowing down to make a right turn at the San Jose Village road when he was shot several times by unknown assailants.

Nobody heard any gunshot being fired, not even a beat patrol policeman who was then in front of the mall, according to Ylanan.

Because Ting’s BMW was automatic, it still ran and bumped into an incoming Toyota Avanza vehicle that came from the Katipunan area and was about to enter F. Llamas Street.

Michael Jackson's estate has made more than $1bn (£677m) since his death a year ago, according to estimates by trade paper Billboard.

The magazine says Jackson's album sales have generated about $383m (£259m), while revenue from the film This Is It has hit nearly $400m (£271m).

Profits from publishing rights, licensing and touring are also included in the total.

A new recording contract is estimated to have made $31m (£21m) so far.

The Sony Music Entertainment deal will see 10 albums of the late singer's music released over the next seven years, including one of previously unreleased material.

The estate is guaranteed between $200m (£135m) and $250m (£169.5m) for the deal but Billboard believes approximately $31m (£21m) of this will have been paid in the last 12 months. - BBC

Albay province has signed Wednesday (June 16) a P700 million loan package with the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) to finance a first-in-the-country education strategy that aims to produce "a college graduate for every family" through an encompassing yet simplified study now-pay later scheme.

Albay Governor Joey Salceda, who authored the program, referred to it as an "Education Driven Development" (see presentation below); a development approach for his province anchored on a vigorous, well-planned, financed and executed college and vocational education, a system that practically invites more scholars, ups enrollment and produce more graduates.

Salceda signed the loan agreement with LBP President and Chief Executive Officer Gilda Pico Wednesday, June 16, in the presence of LBP ranking officers and Albay Provincial officials, among them, members of the provincial board and members of the media at Land Bank main office in Malate, Manila.

The loan will be used to finance government scholars in the tertiary level, under the Albay Higher Education Contribution Scheme (AHECS), enrolled at the Bicol University and other community colleges in Albay which, this year alone will pay for over 12,000 college freshmen until they graduate. This is estimated to trigger a growth in college enrolment in Albay by 40%.

"I would have placed this amount in infrastructures. But I believe diplomas give better economic returns than roads and bridges," Salceda said.

"A well-educated constituency has a lot of social payback and economic benefits. It expands their labor mobility. They will seek better jobs. The difference in economic return between an elementary graduate and a secondary graduate is about 7%. But the differential between a college graduate and a high school graduate is about 21%. With diplomas, they can seek jobs elsewhere and not cramp the limited jobs market of Albay. Diplomas are like visas", he added.

Salceda further stated that at a certain stage, Albay will gain the reputation as the natural source of well-educated labor force. The availability of trainable workforce will serve as a come-on for investors.

Considered a first of its kind in the country, Albay's education program in all levels, has lately been gaining grounds, among others, raising students' learning standard as was proven in the 2009 National Achievement Test (NAT) where the province garnered the 106th place out of 202 divisions, a distant leaped of 69 places from a poor 175th in 2007.

Salceda said the province's present goal is to get to the top 40 schools in NAT within the next three years, and the top 10 within the next six years; there is no room for complacency, simply no space for mediocrity. The education agenda, though, is backed up by a portfolio of interventions, among others, an institutional capacity-building program.

Albay is presently the only province in the country with a Provincial Education Department (PED) - best known earlier as Education Quality for Albayanos (EQUAL) - created by an ordinance, with plantilla staff approved by the Civil Service Commission and the Department of Budget and Management, overseen by a special advisory group - the Albay Council of Educators.

Salceda said Albay has committed over 17% of its annual budget now to education subsidy, under the PED, specifically EQUAL, which this year costs over P178 million - now the biggest item in its expenditure.

The province's Special Education Fund (SEF), separated from the regular PED budget, which is used in, among others, sports program and maintenance of schools and classrooms in schools divisions, grew from only about P5 million in 2007 to P18 million in 2010, according to Salceda.

"Albay's education program is producing the social impact; the number of college population has grown by 15% in three years from 34,000 to 38,000 due to provincial scholarships; and college graduates grew by 31% per year from 6,300 to 8,300, more or less," Salceda concluded.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has decried as misleading a newspaper ad that urged President-elect Benigno Aquino III to end the department’s allegedly anomalous electronic passport project.

In a letter to the Philippine Daily Inquirer on Friday, DFA spokesperson Eduardo Malaya said there was “an apparent attempt by the proponents of the advertisers to mislead the public,” adding that the issues that were raised had already been ruled on by the Supreme Court in favor of the DFA.

The ad, published in the Inquirer on Thursday, said the ePassport system was “a graft-ridden project that was implemented by Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo involving the precipitate and totally baseless termination by the DFA of an ongoing build-operate-transfer contract” with BCA International Corp. for machine readable passports (MRP).

Malaya said that contrary to the ad’s claim, all transactions pertaining to the scrapped machine readable passport and the ePassport projects were legal and transparent.

SWISS-BASED NESTLÉ, the world’s biggest food group, is planning to relocate factories in Malaysia and the Philippines to Indonesia to be closer to raw materials, officials told a local newspaper on Monday.

Brata T. Hardjosubroto, spokesperson for Nestlé’s Indonesia unit, told daily business newspaper Kontan that the firm would announce details of the relocation in November.

But according to officials of Nestlé Philippines Inc. the company will stay on in the country and has no plans to move any of its factories to Indonesia, contradicting the report that appeared in the Indonesian newspaper.

In an official statement sent to the Philippine media yesterday, Nestlé further clarified that the company, in fact, would continue to invest heavily in its manufacturing facilities in the Philippines to upgrade machinery and expand capacities to meet local and foreign demand for its products.

The company currently has four manufacturing facilities in the country. Its Cagayan de Oro factory, where the company manufactures Nescafé, also serves as the Nestlé Group’s Asean Supply Center for filled milk powder. - PDI

DESPITE the global frenzy over the ongoing Soccer World Cup in South Africa, some diehard sports followers are puzzled why football, or soccer, lacks popular appeal in the Philippines unlike basketball which commands tremendous following.

As former POC president and retired Col. Julian Malonso said: “Football is a sport best suited for the Filipinos mainly because the ball is on the ground unlike basketball where the ball is on the air, hence giving the tall players undue advantage.”

Football is not a tall man’s game, explained Malonso, who was president of the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines before assuming the presidency of the Philippine Olympic Committee in 1980. In fact, two of the world’s greatest football players everâ€"Pele of Brazil and Diego Maradona, the present coach of Argentinaâ€"are just about the same height as most Filipinos.

Team Philippines, composed of members of the Philippine Army, won the first Castrol World Cup Pilipinas tournament with six wins and zero losses.

The other teams that made it to the semi-finals were Ivory Coast, followed by Portugal and Sweden.

The four-weekend tournament at the CCP Liwasang Ipil-Ipil was organized by the Sunken Garden United Football Club, a University of the Philippines-Diliman-based team composed of UP alumni and players from diverse backgrounds (professionals, laborers, Christians, Muslims, youth, some foreigners, men, women, and even a priest)..

The tournament, which ended Sunday, also featured a one-day 7-a-side Century Tuna Cup Pilipinas won by Sudan.

One of the few football events in basketball-crazed Philippines, the competition sought to drum up interest for the “beautiful game.”

“Basketball is killing football,” Sunken Garden’s TJ Besa said, noting that football is best suited for Filipinos as it does not require much height, only skill.

He said that WCP was held almost simultaneously with the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa is helping make the sport popular.

The bio-tech company Monsanto can sell genetically modified seeds before safety tests on them are completed, the US Supreme Court has ruled.

A lower court had barred the sale of the modified alfalfa seeds until an environmental impact study could be carried out.

But seven of the nine Supreme Court Justices decided that ruling was unconstitutional.

The seed is modified to be resistant to Monsanto's brand of weedkiller.

The US is the world's largest producer of alfalfa, a grass-like plant used as animal feed.

It is the fourth most valuable crop grown in the country.

Environmentalists had argued that there might be a risk of cross-pollination between genetically modified plants and neighbouring crops.

They also argued over-use of the company's weedkiller Roundup, the chemical treatment the alfalfa is modified to be resistant to, could cause pollution of ground water and lead to resistant "super-weeds". - source: BBC

USA and Canada / New York Bomber: Guilty
June 22, 2010, 07:32:12 AM
The main suspect in an attempt to set off a car bomb in New York's Times Square has admitted weapons and terrorism charges.

Faisal Shahzad told a court in Manhattan he wanted "to plead guilty and 100 times more".

The Pakistani-born US citizen admitted all 10 charges so there will be no trial. He will be sentenced in October.

The petrol and propane bomb was left in a sports utility vehicle near Broadway theatres on 1 May but failed to ignite.

Judge Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum, in Manhattan's Federal District Court, asked Shahzad a series of questions to ensure he understood his rights.

She asked him if he understood he might spend the rest of his life in prison, to which he said he did.

Asked by Judge Cedarbaum if he was sure he wanted to plead guilty, he launched into a statement, saying he wanted "to plead guilty and 100 times more".

He said he wanted to let the US know that if it did not get out of Iraq and Afghanistan and stop drone attacks and meddling in Muslim lands, "we will be attacking US". - source: BBC

An ancient Egyptian city believed to be Avaris, the capital of the Hyksos people who ruled 3,500 years ago, has been located by radar, Egypt's culture ministry says.

A team of Austrian archaeologists used radar imaging to find the underground outlines of the city in the Nile Delta, a now densely populated area.

The Hyksos were foreign occupiers from Asia who ruled Egypt for a century.

Avaris was their summer capital, near what is now the town of Tal al-Dabaa.

The radar images show the outlines of streets and houses underneath the green farm fields and modern towns in Egypt's Delta.

Egyptian antiquities chief Zahi Hawass said in a statement that the area could be part of Avaris, the summer capital of the Hyksos who ruled Egypt from 1664-1569 BC, during the 15th Dynasty.

"The pictures taken using radar [imaging] show an underground city complete with streets, houses and tombs which gives a general overview of the urban planning of the city," Dr Hawass said in a statement.

Irene Mueller, who heads the Austrian team, said the main purpose of the project had been to determine how far the underground city extended.

"The aim of the geophysical survey was to identify the size of the ancient city and the mission managed to identify a large number of houses and streets and a port inside the city," she said. - source: BBC

Yet France's chaotic World Cup campaign has fallen victim to all three.

The 2006 runners-up have no goals and only one point after their first two games and are on the brink of an embarrassingly early exit.

But it is the revolt within the team ranks that has grabbed the headlines.

Estimates of the gold reserves held by Saudi Arabia have been doubled to 323 tons after an accounting change.

The Middle East kingdom had previously been calculated by the World Gold Council as owning a mere 143 tons.

The trade organisation said it changed its estimate "as a result of the adjustment of the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency's gold accounts".

The surprise upward revision may partly be due to previously unknown gold purchases since 2008.

The price of gold has risen at an accelerating pace since 2001, and currently trades at $1,255 per troy ounce, about five times its level of 2001.

France's players refused to train on Sunday following Nicolas Anelka's expulsion from the squad for verbally abusing coach Raymond Domenech.

Domenech read out a statement from his squad which said: "The French Football Federation did not at any time try to protect the group.

"To show our opposition to the decision taken [on Anelka], all the players decided not to take part in training."

The French Football Federation's managing director subsequently quit.

Moments before a public training session was about to begin, Domenech had to separate captain Patrice Evra and fitness coach Robert Duverne.

Duverne is understood to have stormed away from an argument with the Manchester United defender, throwing his accreditation badge to the ground. - BBC

A deal that could regulate whaling for the next 10 years is up for debate at the International Whaling Commission's meeting opening in Agadir, Morocco.

The proposal would see Iceland, Japan and Norway given annual quotas with hunts more tightly scrutinised, while international trade could be banned.

Some anti-whaling countries and some conservation groups support the idea, while others are implacably opposed.

Few observers are prepared to predict whether the deal will be approved.

The week-long annual meeting in Agadir marks the final stage in a two-year US-led process that has seen bitter foes such as Australia and Japan working together in attempts to find areas of compromise.

Governor-elect Rep. Edgar Chatto’s congressional scholarship and subsidy program is one lasting legacy that has made his some 1,500 scholars really sad.

One program beneficiary named Lourdes Palapar of the Bohol Island State University (BISU) â€" Calape Campus cried as she articulated the value of Chatto’s support to her study.

Palapar, a junior education student, was candidly worried that she could no longer enjoy Chatto’s assistance strictly because the congressional scholarship is bound to close with the end of the solon’s third and last term as congressman.

The same was felt by the 38 Chatto scholars at the BISU-Bilar Campus whose studies were subsidized by the First District lawmaker even if they are from the Third District towns.

Josefina Baluca, mother of one of the scholars, confided that her child would not have attained her second year in college had it not been for the Chatto assistance.

She spoke in behalf of the parents of the BISU-Bilar scholars during the distribution of the last and final batch of the study grants of Chatto’s ending congressional scholarship and subsidy program.

One student, Herlyn Cabig, who also emceed the program, touched the hearts of the mothers and fathers of the other scholars by saying that “to be a parent of a Chatto scholar is an opportunity.”

Chatto reiterated in the separate grant awarding at BISU-Calape Campus his plan to expand the province’s CPG Scholarship Program to assist more poor but deserving students.

He will adopt the subsidy scheme of his successful congressional scholarship program as one way of expanding the CPG scholarship once he assumes the governorship effective noon of June 30.

Chatto will also revive and fully implement the distinct scholarship program for the barangay officials and their children as well as the officials of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK).

He had successfully lobbied with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for the revival and full implementation of the said program as mandated in the Local Government Code of 1991.  It was stopped few years back.

Chatto has been tying up with the CHED on another educational assistance approach called the Special Study Grant Program (SSGP).

Sadness assumed the faces of the BISU-Bilar scholars not just because they would miss the congressional scholarship program of Chatto.

They wished their education champion to come during the awarding of their final study grant last Wednesday so that they could have personally thanked him.

But Chatto’s congressional district chief-of-staff, former Provincial Board Member Billy Tongco, regretted to tell them that the solon was urgently called to join Sen. Miguel Zubiri in the provincial celebration of the anniversary of the death of the late Pres. Carlos P. Garcia in Tagbilaran City on the same day.

Chatto would have also distributed final scholarship grant checks to his scholars at the BISU-Clarin Campus but had to speed back to the city after awarding the same grants to BISU-Calape Campus scholars.

The BISU-Bilar scholars still had to render their prepared “thank you” song in the presence of Chatto’s representatives, who included the congressman’s scholarship program handler, Donna Lungay Briones.

They had prepared personalized thank you letters which they turned over to Tongco in the presence of BISU-Bilar Campus Director Virgilia Tejada, Student Affairs and Services Dean Narcisa Oppus, entire BISU-System Scholarship Coordinator Luz Ganas and other school officials.

Tejada confided that many students had earlier come to her for promissory notes.  She said Chato’s final study grant checks would help the students a lot.

The state university official described the scholars as “fortunate students.”  She told them to “thank God for giving us a man whose heart is so close to the education sector.”

Chatto “shared his heart to the Third District students enrolled at the BISU-Bilar Campus,” Tejada added.

Chatto was further described as a leader who does not only possess a “generous heart” but he is a leader “equipped with virtues.”

In the BISU-Calape Campus grant awarding, campus director Dr. Inocencio Cosare declared that “we cannot fail in Chatto’s name” because he is “a man who is true to his words.”

Mayette Naquila, president of the Bohol Association of Student Councils (BASC), attested to how Chatto values the education of the Boholano youths.

Chatto’s present scholars numbering to some 1,500 are not just students of the six BISU campuses.  He has also assisted the students of leading private tertiary schools in the province.

The last-termer congressman and new Bohol governor come June 30 is the principal author of the law converting the then CVSCAFT into BISU, the first and only state university in this part of the country.

He fathered the CPG Scholarship Program of the province during his stint as the then vice governor and presiding officer of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan. (Ven rebo Arigo)

Health and Food / Tea Can Cause Arthritis?
June 19, 2010, 01:27:42 AM
A US study on more than 76,000 women found consuming tea raised the risk, while drinking coffee had no impact.

Tea-lovers who enjoyed more than four cups a day had the highest risk - being 78% more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than those who drank none.

But drinking any amount of tea increased the chance by 40%, compared with people who never drank tea.

The findings were presented at the Annual Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism in Rome.

Professor Christopher Collins, from Georgetown University Medical Centre in the US, said he was surprised by the differences between coffee and tea. - Yahoo

Cars and Automotive / US-made Cars the Best?
June 19, 2010, 01:25:37 AM
By STEPHEN MANNING, AP Business Writer

U.S. automakers have surpassed foreign brands for the first time in a survey that measures the quality of new cars and trucks.

J.D. Power and Associates said Thursday that owners of vehicles made by Detroit automakers reported fewer problems on average during the first 90 days of ownership than those built by companies based overseas.

It was the first time that has happened in the 24 years the industry research group has conducted the annual quality study that is a closely watched measure of the durability and reliability of vehicles.

U.S. automakers have long lagged foreign brands, especially those from Asian manufacturers like Toyota, which many consumers believe produce higher quality cars and trucks than General Motors, Ford and Chrysler.

But J.D. Power said Ford Motor Co. showed some of the biggest gains in quality among individual brands, moving into the fifth spot. Porsche was the top scorer. Toyota Motor Corp., which has suffered through huge safety recalls earlier this year, saw its score drop.

Basketball | NBA-PBA / Kobe Bryant Needs Help
June 18, 2010, 05:31:05 PM
Part of the reason for Kobe Bryant’s effectiveness in the NBA Finals can be traced to a product of the Celtics organization.

Former Celtics scout Mike Procopio and former Chicago Bulls trainer Tim Grover have been working behind the scenes for Bryant the last two years, and their involvement was ramped up after the Lakers lost to the Celtics in Game 2 of this series.

“After that game, Kobe called and said, ‘I need you in Boston,’ ’’ said Procopio, who is based at Grover’s Attack Athletics facility in Chicago.

Procopio, who grew up near TD Garden, brought his iPad to the three games in Boston, analyzed the action, and sent his reports to Bryant. Then, Procopio followed the Lakers to the West Coast, staying in a hotel near Bryant’s Orange County home, and broke down Game 6. - full article: http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/articles/2010/06/18/bryant_scores_off_an_assist/

Post-game Analysis: Lakers vs Celtics Game 7 Finals

Purple and gold confetti raining down upon him, Kobe Bryant(notes) hopped up on the scorer’s table, shook his fists and extended five fingers.

When he hopped down, Boston’s legendary Hall of Fame center Bill Russell was waiting to shake his hand.

A Game 7 classicâ€"and this time, it finally went the Lakers’ way.

Beating Boston for the first time in a Game 7, the Lakers came up champions again after trailing in the last quarter of the last game of their season.

Kobe Bryant, the finals MVP, scored 23 points despite 6-of-24 shooting and the Lakers won their 16th NBA championship Thursday night, dramatically rallying from a fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Boston Celtics 83-79 in Game 7 of the NBA finals.

Bryant earned his fifth title with the Lakers, who repeated as NBA champions for the first time since winning three straight from 2000-02.

“This one is by far the sweetest, because it’s them,” Bryant said. “This was the hardest one by far.”

“I wanted it so bad, and sometimes when you want it so bad, it slips away from you. My guys picked me up.”

Ron Artest(notes) added 20 points for the Lakers, who shot terribly while trailing for most of the first 3 1/2 quarters. Yet they reclaimed the lead midway through the fourth quarter and hung on with big shots from Pau Gasol(notes) and Artest.

“Well, first all I want to thank everybody in my hood,” Artest said in an ABC interview right after the game. “I definitely want to thank my doctors … my psychiatrist, she really helped me relax a lot.”

With their fifth title in 11 seasons, the Lakers moved one championship behind Boston’s 17 banners for the overall NBA lead.

Amid the confetti and streamers after the final buzzer, Magic Johnson rushed the court to congratulate Bryant, who now has the same number of titles, and to hug Artest, the only new addition to the Lakers’ championship roster from last season. Artest has been a liability for much of the postseason, but the former head case came up with a remarkable game on the Lakers’ biggest night, playing sturdy defense along with his scoring.

Paul Pierce(notes) had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Celtics, who just couldn’t finish the final quarter of a remarkable playoff run after a fourth-place finish in the Eastern Conference. Kevin Garnett(notes) added 17 points, but Boston flopped in two chances to clinch the series in Los Angeles after winning Game 5 back home.

After three quarters of mostly terrible offense, the Lakers tied it at 61 on Artest’s three-point play with 7:29 left. Bryant’s free throws 90 seconds later gave the Lakers their first lead of the second half, and the Lakers went up by five points before Bryant and Sasha Vujacic(notes) hit free throws in the final seconds to keep Los Angeles ahead.

The Lakers will relish this title because they took it from the Celtics, their greatest rivals, with fourth-quarter poise and defense. The teams have met in 12 NBA finals, but the Lakers won for just the third time.

Exactly two years to the day after Boston beat the Lakers by 39 points to clinch the 2008 title, Los Angeles got revenge for perhaps the most embarrassing loss of Bryant’s careerâ€"even if he did little more than grab 15 rebounds for most of the night.

But forget how it looked, because history will. Bryant even did something Jerry West and Magic Johnson never could: He beat the hated Celtics in Game 7 of the finals.

The Celtics had never lost a seventh game in the finals. Despite nursing a lead through most of the night while holding the Lakers to ridiculously low shooting percentages until the final minutes, Boston couldn’t close it out on the coast, becoming just the seventh team to blow a 3-2 finals lead after winning Game 5.

Los Angeles had lost a seventh game to Boston four times previouslyâ€"but those teams didn’t have Bryant, who’s just one title shy of Michael Jordan’s six rings after winning his second title without Shaquille O’Neal(notes), his partner in the first three.

With that fourth-quarter escape act, Bryant and fellow five-time champion Derek Fisher(notes) even earned the right to celebrate a title at home for the first time since winning their first rings in 2000.

Lakers coach Phil Jackson won his 11th title overall, his fifth in Los Angelesâ€"and perhaps the last for the winningest playoff coach in NBA history. Weary of the regular-season grind and facing a likely pay cut with the Lakers, Jackson hasn’t determined his future, though he previously said another title would make him more likely to chase an unprecedented fourth threepeat next season, when he’ll be 65.

With his hands already full, maybe Jackson will follow Russell’s lead and put that 11th championship ring on a chain around his neckâ€"and Bryant isn’t likely to settle for just one handful of rings.

The Celtics had much more poise from the opening tip in Game 7, playing vicious defense that forced Los Angeles to miss 21 of its first 27 shots. Bryant and Gasol were a combined 6 for 26 in the first half while the Lakers made just 26.5 percent of their shots, and only Ron Artest’s 12 points and relentless effort kept the Celtics’ halftime lead to six points.

The Lakers are the first team to rally from a 3-2 deficit to win a finals since Houston did it in 1994, beating the New York Knicks. Boston did it twice to the Lakers, including an infamous 1969 finale in which thousands of celebratory balloons never were released from the Forum rafters in Inglewood.

Staples Center had no such problems, unleashing a downpour of streamers and confetti when the Lakers finally finished it off. Although Los Angeles stumbled to the brink of elimination for the first time in these playoffs last weekend in Boston, Bryant’s teams still are spectacular finishers: They’ve closed out their playoff opponents on the first try 10 times while winning three straight Western Conference titles over the last three years.

Bryant further cemented his place in the NBA’s highest circles by leading the Lakers to back-to-back titles, something no other NBA superstar has accomplished since he and O’Neal did it nearly a decade ago. He also picked up a unique bit of Lakers credibility by sending home the Celtics in a Game 7, which West failed to do in three tries and Johnson couldn’t manage in 1984.

Like a lot of folks, albeit ones making millions less than he does, Phil Jackson rises every morning and swears it’s the last season he’s going to coach the Los Angeles Lakers.

So far, he’s kept coming back for more. Jackson wraps up his 10th year with the team on Thursday night, when the Lakers and Boston Celtics play a deciding Game 7 of the NBA finals.

A victory by the Lakers would help Jackson extend his record to 11 titles.

It will be Jackson’s first Game 7 in the finals.

“I can’t imagine myself going through this again,” he said Wednesday. “It’s not only a lot of fun, but it’s a lot of stress and pain and anxiety, etc. But it’s something you get acclimated to.”

LOS ANGELES â€" Kendrick Perkins(notes)  arrived at practice on a pair of tall crutches with his right knee wrapped, immediately ending any speculation whether the Boston Celtics’ injured center could make a miraculous return for the seventh game of the NBA Finals.

Perkins confirmed what Yahoo! Sports first reported Tuesday evening: He won’t play in the Finals’ decisive game after tearing his medial collateral ligament and partially tearing his posterior cruciate ligament. Perkins, who was hurt after landing awkwardly in the first quarter of Game 6, will receive an MRI on his right knee Friday in Boston. He doesn’t know when he’ll be back on the court and will miss USA Basketball’s minicamp this summer. Doctors told Perkins if he had suffered the injury in December, he would have missed the remainder of the season. -

A mother in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia has been issued several fines after a police officer was stunned to discover her driving while nursing her baby, authorities reported late on Monday.

“Despite his almost thirty years of experience on patrol duty, the officer was not a little surprised,” said a statement from the Mettmann  district some 20 kilometres northeast of Düsseldorf.

While patrolling streets in the town of Velbert on Monday, the officer spotted the 47-year-old woman at the wheel â€" with her 18-month-old at her breast, the statement said.

The woman objected to being pulled over, explaining that because her home was nearby, mother and child would have certainly made it home safely. But the officer refused to let her continue driving in that state.

Richard Jordan had everything he was told to want: cars, a house, a fiancé. Then his fiancé left him. So he sold everything, bought a Lamborghini Gallardo and set out across America.

This is his amazing story.

It’s a love story, but not a conventional one. Oh sure, there’s a woman. There always is. But it’s when the woman split that the real romance began. Richard Jordan lost love, then found it again in an exotic Italian sports car and the American road. Jordan’s journey would take him across the country and back again repeatedly as he racked up nearly 100,000 miles in a car so expensive most owners rarely drive them at all.

It was early 2006 and Jordan’s version of the American dream lay crumbled at his feet. After giving his girlfriend of five years a ring and a house in a north Texas suburb â€" a home purchased with the proceeds from selling his metal-fabrication business, his home and a few of his cars â€" she left him.

“I bought us the house and planned on moving in and as soon as I did, she left,” Jordan says. “So, I got stuck in a house I didn’t want, in an area I didn’t want to be in…. European Union EU / Mystery at Church in Tuscany
June 17, 2010, 08:38:46 AM
Human remains found in a church in Tuscany almost certainly belong to Renaissance artist Caravaggio, Italian researchers said.

The team said they were 85% sure that the set of bones of a man who died in about 1610, aged between 38 and 40, were that of the painter.

The remains had been kept in an ossuary in a church crypt in Porto Ercole, after reportedly being exhumed in 1956.

Caravaggio was known for his "chiaroscuro" painting technique.

The method, in which light and shadow are sharply contrasted, revolutionised painting. - BBC

BBC News - Seattle police to review training after girl punched

Seattle police are to review training procedures after video of an officer punching a teenage girl circulated widely on US television and online.

The officer struck the 17-year-old after she tried to intervene while he was scuffling with another teenage girl he had seen jaywalking, officials said.

The Seattle police union defended the officer, saying he was working alone amid a crowd and feared for his safety.

The girls, who were arrested, were not harmed in the incident, police said.

In the video, shot on Monday, the officer is shown struggling with a girl in black who police said had tried to leave the scene when he confronted her about jaywalking.

A girl in a pink top intervenes, apparently trying to free the other girl. The footage then shows the police officer punching her as onlookers watch.

European Union EU / Pity the Puppy
June 17, 2010, 08:35:33 AM
A German student "mooned" a group of Hell's Angels and hurled a puppy at them before escaping on a stolen bulldozer, police have said.

The man drove up to a Hell's Angels clubhouse near Munich, wearing only a pair of shorts and carrying a puppy.

He dropped his shorts and threw the dog, escaping on a bulldozer from a nearby building site.

He was arrested later at home by police. The 26-year-old is said to have stopped taking depression medication.

After making his getaway on the bulldozer, he had driven so slowly that a 5km tailback built up behind him on the motorway.

After driving about 1km, he had abandoned the bulldozer in the middle of the motorway, near Allershausen. He continued his journey by hitchhiking. -bbc
