1. Fine: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.

2. Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.

3. Nothing: This is the calm before the storm. This means something, and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine.

4. Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don’t Do It!

5. Loud Sigh: This is not actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to #3 for the meaning of nothing.)

6. That’s Okay: This is one of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man. That’s okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.

7. Thanks: A woman is thanking you, do not question, or Faint. Just say you’re welcome.

8. Whatever: Is a woman’s way of saying *&^% YOU!

9. Don’t worry about it, I got it: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking “What’s wrong?” For the woman’s response, refer to #3.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - A pair of space station astronauts ventured out on a spacewalk Tuesday to inspect two defective mechanisms that are hobbling power generation at the orbiting complex.

Flight controllers called it a fact-finding mission.

Meanwhile, some 200 miles below, NASA was recreating fuel gauge problems that grounded shuttle Atlantis earlier this month.

Engineers started filling the spaceship's external tank with liquid hydrogen fuel at daybreak, in a test at the launch pad to pinpoint the nagging trouble. One of the four fuel gauges promptly failed, and two others were not working consistently.

The problem could be anywhere in the 100 feet of circuitry between the shuttle and tank, or in the fuel gauges.

Atlantis' astronauts were supposed to examine the clogged rotary joint at the international space station. But with the shuttle mission delayed until January, NASA moved up the joint inspection and added another chore to the spacewalk after a second component in the space station's power system failed 1 1/2 weeks ago.

Commander Peggy Whitson and Daniel Tani made history as they floated outside well before dawn: It was the 100th spacewalk at the space station.

They quickly headed to a mechanism that is supposed to tilt the solar wings on the right side of the space station toward the sun. The component experienced circuit breaker trips Dec. 8, leading engineers to believe it may have been hit by a piece of space junk or micrometeorite.

However, Whitson and Tani found no signs of impact.

Afterward, the spacewalkers moved over to the bigger solar rotary joint, which is supposed to automatically revolve 360 degrees to keep the solar wings pointed toward the sun. The joint â€" also on the right side of the space station â€" has been used sparingly in the past three months because of vibrations and electrical current spikes.

During a spacewalk in October, Tani found steel grit inside the 10-foot-diameter joint. He collected samples of the shavings, which were returned to Earth on the last shuttle flight, but engineers still do not know what is grinding inside.

Whitson and Tani looked deeper into the joint Tuesday, taking off more covers and using a dentist-style mirror on a rod to peek inside. They collected more samples, using tape to pick up the grit, and removed a suspect bearing for analysis back on Earth. No repairs were planned during the excursion.

Tani said the magnetized grit looked like marching ants as the gears moved. "It's hilarious," he called down. "It's like it's animated, like they're alive."

Despite the seriousness of the job, the spacewalkers enjoyed some laughs with Mission Control. One flight controller, a man, wanted to know from Whitson "if this beats cooking and sewing."

"Tell him I'm going to take care of him when I get back â€" maybe not the way he wants," replied Whitson, the space station's first female skipper.

Three hours later, she became the new female spacewalking champion â€" "the queen," according to Mission Control â€" racking up more time outside in the vacuum of space than any other woman.

The unrelated predicaments are curtailing power generation at the space station and could delay future shuttle visits.

Atlantis' trip to deliver the European lab, Columbus, is off until Jan. 10, a date that hinges on the results of Tuesday's fueling test. The Japanese lab, Kibo, or Hope, is supposed to follow on multiple shuttle flights.

NASA has been struggling with sporadic fuel gauge problems for two years and wants to resolve them once and for all. The gauges are part of a backup safety system; they prevent the shuttle's main engines from running on an empty tank, which could be catastrophic. - AP

12/18/2007 | 03:12 PM

WASHINGTON - Taking a blood pressure pill at bedtime instead of in the morning might be healthier for some high-risk people.

New research suggests that simple switch may normalize patterns of blood pressure in patients at extra risk from the twin epidemics of heart and kidney disease.

Why? When it comes to blood pressure, you want to be a dipper. In healthy people, blood pressure dips at night, by 10 to 20 percent. Scientists don't know why, but suspect the drop gives arteries a little rest.

People with high blood pressure that doesn't dip at night â€" the non-dippers â€" fare worse than other hypertension sufferers, developing more serious heart disease. Moreover, heart and kidney disease fuel each other â€" and the 26 million Americans with chronic kidney disease seem most prone to non-dipping. In addition to heart problems, they're at extra risk of their kidney damage worsening to the point of dialysis.

Most blood pressure patients need two or three medications. So Italian researchers performed an easy test: They told 32 non-dippers with kidney disease to switch one of those drugs from a morning to a bedtime dose. In two months, nearly 90 percent of these high-risk patients had turned into dippers. Their nighttime blood pressure dropped an average of 7 points, without side effects or increase in daytime blood pressure.

Better, a key sign of kidney function improved significantly, too, Dr. Roberto Minutolo of the Second University of Naples reports this month in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.

It's the latest research in the field of chronotherapy: How our bodies' internal rhythms make certain diseases worse at certain times of the day, and in turn affect how to time treatments.

While the Italian study is too small for proof, similar studies from Europe also back a bedtime switch for non-dippers. The work is catching the attention of US hypertension specialists, and now doctors at Baltimore's Johns Hopkins University are planning a larger study to see if a bedtime switch really could give certain people healthier hearts and kidneys.

How big a problem is non-dipping?

"I think it's huge," says Hopkins' Dr. Lawrence Appel. "This is our best lead" into why black Americans with kidney disease, in particular, tend to worsen despite treatment.

Appel found 80 percent of black kidney patients in a recent study were non-dippers. Most startling, 40 percent had nighttime blood pressure that was even higher than daytime levels.

Two-thirds of chronic kidney disease patients, and at least 10 percent of the general population, are estimated to be non-dippers, says Dr. Joseph Vassalotti of the National Kidney Foundation. One theory is that their bodies have trouble excreting salt.

Yet few patients have ever heard of the problem â€" and few doctors know who is affected. Most people get their blood pressure checked only during the day. A 24-hour blood pressure monitor can tell but is rarely used, partly because insurance seldom pays for the extra visit to download and diagnose the readings.

And most patients who take several once-a-day pills swallow them all in the morning, meaning they all start wearing off around the same time, says Dr. Gina Lundberg of St. Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta.

"It does make good sense to take some in the morning and some in the evening," says Lundberg, a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association.

Everyone has an internal clock, determined by genes, that affects health. Many of these biological rhythms are circadian, meaning they fluctuate on a 24-hour cycle.

Consider how that can affect the timing of treatments. Some older "statin" pills fight cholesterol best if taken at bedtime; they target a liver enzyme that's most active at night. Asthma attacks are more frequent at night, and the stomach secretes more heartburn-causing acid at night, affecting some patients' dosing requirements. Researchers even are studying how to better time certain cancer chemotherapies and allergy treatments.

The best-known example: Blood pressure jumps in the early morning hours, as the awakening body produces more stress hormones. That's also why heart attacks and strokes are most common in the morning.

The nighttime dipping problem has gotten far less attention. The new Italian study marks an important advance, says Dr. Mahboob Rahman of the University Hospitals of Cleveland.

"We know now that you can change medication timing and lower blood pressure at night," he explains.

That doesn't mean everyone should switch willy-nilly to bedtime dosing. Morning may be best for people on just one drug, and no one yet knows if the switch truly gives non-dippers better overall health. "That's the million-dollar question," Rahman cautions.

Still, Lundberg says it's worth asking your doctor how to time doses, saying one at night for someone taking multiple medicines couldn't hurt. - AP

Close to 5,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are expected to be hired in Italy next year.

Labor Secretary Arturo Brion said the Italian government has increased from 3,000 to 5,000 the annual quota of Filipinos who will be admitted as regular or non-seasonal workers in Italy.

The increase in the number of Filipinos who can apply and work as regular workers in Italy is a welcome development in the drive against unscrupulous individuals and agencies which lure and bring workers to Italy and other overseas destinations without proper work documents, he said.

According to Brion a note verbale from the Italian Embassy indicated that the Italian government decided to increase the quota for Filipino workers as a sign of appreciation of the good bilateral cooperation with the Philippines in migratory issues.

He said the increase, which is 66 percent more than the previous quota of Filipinos for admission to Italy as regular workers, underscored the country’s continuing efforts to foster bilateral cooperation with labor-receiving countries and promote the welfare of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) employed in these countries.

The two countries, Brion said, regarded the increase in the annual quota of Filipino workers in Italy as highly beneficial to their relations, particularly those involving migration issues and the employment of OFWs in this country.

Records of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) showed that a total of 25,413 OFWs (new hires and rehires) were deployed to Italy in 2006.

New hires consisted mostly of OFWs employed in Italy as domestic workers, cooks, waiters, bartenders, and other service workers. - Marie Neri, GMAnews

CLARK, Freeport -- Three lucky overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) received "Pamaskong Salubong 2007" gifts from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) at the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) on Tuesday.

Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC) president Victor Jose Luciano named the three OFWs as Dominique Tominez of Quirino, Isabela; Mylene Corpuz of Pozzorubio, Pangasinan; and Fe Gonzales of Nueva Vizcaya.

Both Tominez and Corpuz arrived from Singapore aboard a Tiger Airways aircraft, while Gonzales arrived from Kuala Lumpur on an Air Asia flight.

Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) president Reynaldo David awarded a multi-cab vehicle as top prize to Tominez while Corpuz received a pension plan amounting to P50,000. Gonzales on the other hand received a nine-cubic feet GE refrigerator.

Actress Cassandra Ponti assisted the OWWA staff in distributing the awards and other consolation prizes to the Filipino workers from abroad.

Luciano lauded the OFWs for their great contribution to the country. The bulk of OFW remittances are keeping the economy afloat, according to national government officials.

Luciano said DMIA will soon establish the "Global Pinoy" lounge where incoming and outgoing OFWs can avail themselves of free services and food.

Most of the OFWs in nearby Asian countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Bangkok, Macau and Hong Kong are passing through DMIA because of the presence of budget airlines.

"Our Filipino workers heading overseas no longer have to travel all the way to Manila to catch their flights because DMIA is right at their door step," said Luciano.

"Cheap fares also allow our beloved OFWs to go home as often as they want," he added

Last year, three other OFWs were also given prizes during the "Pamaskong Salubong 2006." - Sun-Star Pampanga

It is a matter of history that when Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces,
General Dwight Eisenhower, found the victims of the death

camps he ordered all possible photographs to be taken, and for the

German people from surrounding villages to be ushered through the

camps and even made to bury the dead. He did this because he said in

words to this effect: "Get it all on record now - get the films - get

the witnesses - because somewhere down the track of history some

bastard will get up and say that this never happened"

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

This week, the UK removed The Holocaust from its school curriculum

because it "offended" the Muslim population which claims it never
occurred.
This is a frightening portent of the fear that is gripping the world

and how easily each country is giving in to it.
It is now more than 60 years after the Second World War in
Europe ended.

This e-mail is being sent as a memorial chain, in memory of the six
million Jews, 20 million Russians, 10 million Christians and 1,900

Catholic priests who were murdered, massacred, raped, burned, starved
and humiliated while the German and Russia peoples were looking the
other way!

Now, more than ever, with Iran, among others, claiming the Holocaust
to be "a myth," it is imperative to make sure the world never forgets.

12/16/2007 | 12:29 PM -GMA News
SAN ANTONIO - For the first time, doctors have used stem cells from liposuctioned fat to fix breast defects in women who have had cancerous lumps removed.

The approach is still experimental, but holds promise for millions of women left with cratered areas and breasts that look very different from each other after cancer surgery. It also might be a way to augment healthy breasts without using artificial implants.

So far, it has only been tested on about two dozen women in a study in Japan. But doctors in the United States say it has great potential.

''This is a pretty exciting topic right now in plastic surgery,'' said Dr. Karol Gutowski of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. ''There are people all over the country working on this.''

The Japanese study was reported Saturday at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. The company that developed the treatment, Cytori Therapeutics, plans larger studies in Europe and Japan next year.

More than 100,000 women have lumps removed each year in the United States. These operations, lumpectomies, often are done instead of mastectomies, which take the whole breast. But they often leave deformities because as much as a third of a woman's breast may be removed.

''It's almost a euphemism'' to call it a lumpectomy, said Dr. Sydney Coleman, a plastic surgeon at New York University who has consulted for Cytori and is interested in the stem cell approach.

The defect ''initially may not be as noticeable'' but it often gets worse, especially if the woman also has radiation treatment, said Dr. Sameer Patel, a reconstructive surgeon at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.

''There's a growing push to try to involve the plastic surgeon particularly for this reason _ to try to avoid a defect,'' but once one develops, options to repair it are limited, Patel said.

The implants sold today are for reconstructing breasts after mastectomies. They aren't designed to fix odd-shaped deformities from lumpectomies or radiation.

''Each one is so different, there's no little thing you can just pop in there,'' Gutowski explained.

Doctors can try making the other breast smaller so they match, transplanting a back muscle to boost the flawed breast, or rearranging tissue to more evenly distribute what's left. But these involve surgery and leave scars.

Mini implants of fat tissue have been tried, but they often get resorbed by the body or die and turn hard and lumpy. The recent discovery that fat cells are rich in stem cells _ master cells that can replenish themselves and form other tissues in the body _ renewed interest in their use.

In the Japanese study, doctors liposuctioned fat from 21 breast cancer patients' bellies, hips or thighs. Half was reserved as the main implant material; the rest was processed to extract stem cells and combined with the reserved fat. This was injected in three places around a breast defect.

Doctors think the stem cells will keep the tissue from dying and form lasting mini implants.

Eight months after treatment, ''about 80 percent of the patients are satisfied'' with the results, said the lead researcher, Dr. Keizo Sugimachi of Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan.

There was a statistically significant improvement in breast tissue thickness at one and six months after treatment.

Doctors with no role in the research say longer study is needed to see if these results last.

The treatment is expected to cost $3,000 to $5,000 (â,¬2,000 to â,¬3,500), said Cytori's president, Dr. Mark Hedrick. The company sees potential for cosmetic breast augmentation of healthy breasts, but for now ''our plan is to focus on an unmet medical need'' in cancer patients, he said.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says doctors must be cautious about using fat cells for cosmetic purposes until more is known. Gutowski heads a task force the society formed to study the science. Coleman is a member.

''It's got great potential not only for breast but other cosmetic and reconstructive purposes,'' like filling in facial defects from cancer or trauma, Gutowski said. ''Imagine the aging face.''

Better cosmetic treatments may encourage more women to choose lumpectomies. Some have chosen mastectomies because they are concerned about being left with a defect, especially younger women. - AP

Jas 5:7-10

Be patient, brothers and sisters,
until the coming of the Lord.
See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth,
being patient with it
until it receives the early and the late rains.
You too must be patient.
Make your hearts firm,
because the coming of the Lord is at hand.
Do not complain, brothers and sisters, about one another,
that you may not be judged.
Behold, the Judge is standing before the gates.
Take as an example of hardship and patience, brothers and sisters,
the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

Third Sunday of Advent (today 16 Dec.2007)

Psalm: Sunday 43
Reading 1
Responsorial Psalm
Reading 2
Gospel
Reading 1
Is 35:1-6a, 10

The desert and the parched land will exult;
the steppe will rejoice and bloom.
They will bloom with abundant flowers,
and rejoice with joyful song.
The glory of Lebanon will be given to them,
the splendor of Carmel and Sharon;
they will see the glory of the LORD,
the splendor of our God.
Strengthen the hands that are feeble,
make firm the knees that are weak,
say to those whose hearts are frightened:
Be strong, fear not!
Here is your God,
he comes with vindication;
with divine recompense
he comes to save you.
Then will the eyes of the blind be opened,
the ears of the deaf be cleared;
then will the lame leap like a stag,
then the tongue of the mute will sing.

Those whom the LORD has ransomed will return
and enter Zion singing,
crowned with everlasting joy;
they will meet with joy and gladness,
sorrow and mourning will flee.

Bible Study / Pope urges students to engage culture
December 17, 2007, 05:00:22 AM

Vatican, Dec. 14, 2007 (CWNews.com) - Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) has urged university students to uphold the faith in a European culture whose thoughts have been "disengaged from God."

The Holy Father spoke to Rome's university students on Thursday evening in the Vatican basilica, after a Mass celebrated by Cardinal Camillo Ruini. He encouraged them to approach the future with confidence, recognizing that the faith is always alive. As evidence of the attractive power of Catholic truth, he pointed out that 150 students from Rome's universities have accepted the faith this year, and are planning to be confirmed at Pentecost 2008.

Tracing some of the thoughts that he presented in his encyclical Spe Salvi, the Pope said that Europe today is influenced by ideological trends formed in the 17th century, "according to which human progress is the work of science and technology, while faith concerns only the salvation of the soul." These trends, he said, led to a belief that economic and political measures can be enough to bring about "a just society in which peace, freedom and equality reign."

In practice, the Pope continued, those ideological trends have had a damaging impact, because the human soul is not shaped simply by economic and political factors, and "technological progress does not correspond to the moral development of mankind." Early in the 21st century, he argued, society has recognized that ideologies can be destructive, and the blind pursuit of technological conquest can be dangerous to society. Thus the time is ripe for a new assertion of Christian claims, he told his young audience.

ONE SOLITARY LIFE

HE was born in an obscure village and worked in a carpenter shop until HE was 30. HE became an itinerant preacher, never held an office, never had a family or owned a house. HE didn't go to college, had no credentials but HIMSELF. HE was 33 when the public turned against HIM. HIS friends ran away. HE was turned over to HIS enemies, went through the mockery of a trial and was nailed to a cross between two thieves. While HE was dying, HIS executioners gambled for HIS clothing, the only property HE had on earth. HE was laid on a borrowed grave.

Twenty one centuries later, HE is the central figure of the human race. All the armies that have marched, all the navies that ever sailed, all the parliaments that ever sat, and all the kings that ever reigned, have not affected the life of man on earth as much as that ONE SOLITARY LIFE.

A Filipino pilgrim died of stroke and another was caught by airport immigration agents in Jeddah as they prepare for the Islamic Hajj season in Saudi Arabia.

The fatality was identified as Jalad Padjing Dasid, a 64-year-old retired policeman from Zamboanga City. He was pronounced dead at 10 a.m. Friday after suffering a stroke at Al Noor Hospital in Makkah.

In line with the Islam tradition, he was buried at 6 p.m. Dalib was accompanied to the pilgrimage by his daughter Berkis D. Talib.

Hajj Attache Soliman C. Mutya said pilgrim Saguira Manibpel from Sultan Kudarat was apprehended upon her arrival on Dec. 11 because of a discrepancy in her passport entries.

Jeddah Consul General Pendosina Lomondot instructed his men to locate and assist Manibpel in her trouble.

Mutya said there are 5, 200 pilgrims from the Philippines to participate in the 2007 Hajj Season.

The first batch of 327 pilgrims arrived on November 20.

Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Governor Datu Zaldy Ampatuan joined the group on Dec. 7.

The Philippine pilgrim is headed by the Amirul Hajj (head of Hajj) Commissioner Salic B. Dumarpa of the National Labor Relations Commission and Lanao del Sur Governor Mamintal Alonto Adiong Jr, the presidential special envoy for the 2007 Hajj.

The Hajj ritual in Makkah will run from December 17 to 22. On December 24, the Philippine consulate in Jeddah will host a traditional Hajj night in honor of Dumarpa and Adiong.

Other government officials taking part in the Hajj Season are Anak Mindanao party list Rep. Mujiv Hataman, Maguindanao Governor Datu Andal Ampatuan; Attorney Faisal Hussien, chief of the Bureau of Immigration’s intelligence division; Sulu Governor Sacor Tan; Sulu Rep.Yusop H. Jikiri; and TAwi-Tawi Governor Sadikul A. Sahali. - Ronaldo Concha, GMANews.TV

PORTLAND, Oregon - Brian Sean Griffith, a former bodyguard to figure skater Tonya Harding who admitted a role in the attack on her rival Nancy Kerrigan during Olympics tryouts, has died. He was 40.

Griffith died Wednesday of what his doctor reported as natural causes, according to the Washington County medical examiner's office. The specific cause of death is expected to be
listed when the doctor files a death certificate, which could take two weeks, the medical
examiner's office said.

Formerly Shawn Eckardt, Griffith had changed his name since the attack in an attempt to put it
behind him.

Griffith, of Beaverton, was Harding's bodyguard when the Portland-born skater competed for a
spot on the US Olympic figure skating team in 1994.

That January, an assailant clubbed Kerrigan in the knee, forcing her out of the competition. The
International Committee of the US Figure Skating Association granted Kerrigan a spot anyway,
and she recovered in time to win a silver medal at the Olympics.

Days after the attack, Griffith confessed, detailing a plan that he and Harding's ex-husband,
Jeff Gillooly, had hatched. The investigation also eventually netted convictions of Shane Stant,
the actual attacker, and Stant's uncle, Derrick Smith, who drove the getaway car.

Griffith was sentenced to 18 months in prison for racketeering but was released four months
early, in September 1995.

He started a computer business, Applied Information Systems Inc., in 2001, but state records
show it was dissolved in 2005. He was also sentenced to three years' probation for
misdemeanor assault in 2001.

Family members refused Friday to comment on Griffith's life before or since the infamous
attack.

"Shawn Eckardt died a long time ago," his brother, Mike Skinner, told The Oregonian. "There is
no other person than Brian Griffith."

Harding has always said she didn't know of the plan. She pleaded guilty to conspiracy to hinder
an investigation and was banned from US Figure Skating Association competitions. - AP

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Six people caught H5N1 bird flu in northern Pakistan last month and at least one person with the disease has died, the government said Saturday.

The World Health Organization confirmed all six cases were positive for the H5N1 strain of bird flu in preliminary testing, but said a second round of analysis was being conducted to make sure.

If confirmed, the infections would be the first in humans in South Asia.

The Health Ministry said it had tested several patients and others whom they had come into contact with in late October. The results for six people from the Abbottabad and Mansehra districts of North West Frontier Province were positive, it said in a statement.

''Five of them have fully recovered. One of the confirmed cases died in a hospital, while his brother who could not be tested has also died,'' the Health Ministry said in a statement. It did not explain why the brother could not be tested.

Khalif Bile, the WHO representative in Pakistan, said preliminary tests had been carried out. He said the WHO was encouraging the government to carry out confirmation tests in the same government laboratory and that the results should be available by Tuesday.

The virus has killed more than 200 people worldwide since it began ravaging Asian poultry stocks in late 2003, according to the World Health Organization.

While it has been difficult for people to catch, experts fear it could mutate into a form that passes easily among people, potentially infecting millions globally. So far, most human cases have been linked to contact with sick birds.

A brother of the two men who died in Pakistan said Saturday he had been hospitalized with flu-like symptoms. Mohammed Ishtiaq said he fell ill last month after culling chickens suspected of carrying bird flu at a farm near Abbottabad.

''I was not aware that this was such a dangerous disease,'' said Ishtiaq, a veterinary doctor who works for a government-funded livestock program. He said he wore no protective clothing.

His two brothers did not accompany him to the farm, but visited him in hospital, Ishtiaq told Associated Press Television News in the village of Sukur.

He identified his brothers as Mohammed Ilyas and Mohammed Idrees and said they were both studying at an agriculture college in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

It was unclear if they had other contact with poultry or another potential source of infection.

Ishtiaq said a fourth brother, a primary school teacher, also fell ill after visiting him but recovered. He said doctors had taken blood samples from him and other relatives but gave them no results.

Health Ministry officials could not be reached for comment on how the disease was transmitted.

The Health Ministry said Saturday that it was treating people who had been in contact with those infected, setting up isolation wards in hospitals and procuring drugs for treatment and protective clothing for health workers.

Most of the human cases of H5N1 bird flu have been reported in Indonesia and Vietnam. On Friday, the WHO confirmed the first case in Myanmar, where a 7-year-old girl was infected but recovered.

Pakistan has grappled with outbreaks of bird flu in poultry for the past two years, but had confirmed no cases in humans. - AP

SUSUPE, Saipan â€" Guilty, then, not guilty. A Filipino accountant who was found guilty on Thursday by a jury for stealing over $120,000 from the company he worked for was acquitted a day later by a judge, citing lack of sufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he committed all 13 counts of theft by deception.

Edgardo Macabalo, from Caloocan, was in tears as he and his wife hugged family members who were in the CNMI Superior Court Friday when the judge said he was discharged the case.

“Right now I just want to be with my family," Macabalo said as he emerged from the courtroom with his family.

He said justice has been served and thanked the Public Defender’s Office for its help in his case.

CNMI Superior Court Associate Judge Ramona Villagomez Manglona reversed the jury’s guilty verdict after completely reviewing all the records in the case. She said she would issue a written order.

On Thursday afternoon, a jury found Macabalo, a former accountant at Marpac Inc., guilty of all 13 counts of theft by deception for stealing over $120,000 from his employer’s beer delivery collections in 2005.

Police arrested Macabalo in May 2006 for theft.

Macabalo allegedly collected $4,000, $4,000, $10,000, $20,000, $6,400, $16,000, $16,000, $10,000, $4,000, $4,200, $354.75, $12,000 and $14,000, for a total of $120,954.75, but he never turned over the money to the company, according to an investigator.

But on Friday morning, the judge granted the renewed motion for judgment of acquittal filed by Assistant Public Defender Richard Miller, counsel for Macabalo.

Miller told local media that the judge's decision is a wonderful thing for the justice system of the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), and the growth of justice in the islands.

He said the prosecution did not meet the burden to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Macabalo is guilty.

The CNMI is home to about 20,000 foreign workers mostly from the Philippines and China. - Haidee V. Eugenio, GMANews.TV

Update 2) Arroyo taken to St Luke’s due to pharyngitis - Palace
12/17/2007 | 12:03 AM

Deputy Presidential Spokesman Anthony Golez on Sunday night said that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was briefly in St Luke's Hospital “for a checkup due to symptoms of apparent pharyngitis."

“The illness may be due to her hectic schedule in Europe and Kuwait. She is now well and back in the Palace," Golez said.

Radio dzBB reported that Mrs Arroyo arrived past 7 p.m. but left before 9:30 p.m. in a presidential convoy. Presidential guards also pulled out of the hospital.

Earlier, security was tightened at the hospital as presidential guards set up an inspection area near the lobby. The presidential guards brought K-9 units to sniff out weapons or explosives.

Mrs Arroyo suffered from a sore throat Friday while delivering a speech. Presidential Management Staff head Cerge Remonde said Saturday he had advised her to take things easy.

Remonde told government radio Saturday that Mrs Arroyo may be suffering from fatigue as she had just come from a weeklong trip to Europe and a sudden side trip to Kuwait to plead for the life of worker Marilou Ranario.

Mrs Arroyo presided over a Legislative Executive Development Advisory Council hours after returning from her trip to Europe and Kuwait. - GMANews.TV

Friends are an extension of ourselves.
Friendships are the representation of our  soul~our spiritual connection with others who also long.
There is something holy, mysterious and graceful about friendships because sometimes we know how each other think, we know or expect each other's reactions and actions.
Friendships are a blessing from the Most High, his many miracles that he gives to each and everyone, to lighten our load and our journey while on our trek in this--thing we call life.
Friendships make us smile because our souls are content and have been given a glimpse of the Glory that is in the Heart of the Lord of Host.

Beautiful Friendships, Dear Family Love. All of these are just a glimpse of what complete and eternal happiness is in stored for us in the Kingdom of Heaven.

May all our paths be straight and paved. And if our journey is a bit long or windy, a good friend will always  help in keeping us happy on our journey..

God Bless You All.
