-/RUB (BANAT NEWS)

Not a fan of bats? Then you might want to give Bali’s Goa Lawah Temple a miss, because all that chirping is the sound of thousands of the little guys.

Goa Lawah means “bat cave,” and it’s also the site of a Hindu temple built in the 11th century. One of the earliest of the country’s Hindu temples, it’s grown into a massive temple complex where the faithful still go to leave offeringsâ€"especially before going on a trip. Many of the offerings are of fruit, so it’s not surprising that you can usually see the nectar bats that cluster around the mouth of the cave. The bats were also once an important part of the lives of the priests who lived at the temple, as it was thought that the frequency and pitch of their chirping helped to focus their minds during meditation.

According to the legend, the caveâ€"which no one has ever explored in its entiretyâ€"was once the hiding spot of a prince. The caves led him away from his pursuers and to safety at Mount Agung’s Besakih Temple, but it’s also been said to lead to a few other temple locations. Supposedly, whenever Mount Agung erupts, ash pours from Goa Lawah.

And if you believe the legends, the bats aren’t the only unsettling residents in the cave. It’s also rumored to be the home of the Hindu snake Vasuki, the serpent seen in the company of Shiva. He guards the healing waters that are deep within the cave, deeper than has ever been explored. When he’s hungry, he comes out to eat some of the bats. -- http://listverse.com/

10. Soda

Right now, soda is arguably public enemy number-oneâ€"and for good reason. The list of reasons you shouldn’t drink the stuff are staggering. Among them, you’ve got weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease, White says. But if it hasn’t stopped you from drinking soda, let us ask you one thing: do you smoke? Of course not, right? Well, according to 2014 study in the American Journal of Public Health, drinking soda can age you by as much as smoking. It’s something to think about.

#8420
8. Blended Coffee Drinks

By itself, coffee can be great for you. But your blended beverage probably contains more sugar and fat than actual coffee. “Guys can easily consume a quarter of their daily recommended calories in a single drink,” White says. And that’s in a drinkâ€"it won’t even fill you up. Plus, by spiking your blood sugar and insulin levels, it guarantees a sugar and energy crash that will leave you raiding the snack drawer 30 minutes later.

9. Bagels

As far as we’re concerned, any refined carb can suck it. But, if we had to pick the worst offender, we’d have to go with bagels. Not only are their carbs refined, leaving you with little more than sugar in bagel form, they can weigh in at 400 calories each, White says. And that’s before you slather them in cream cheese or cut them in half and fill them with bacon (see #1!).
#8421
6. Microwave Popcorn

Does anyone eat popcorn because they are actually hungry? Either way, microwave popcorn doesn’t have much going for it in the nutrition department. All of its trans fats pretty much outdo any benefits its fiber holds. Meanwhile, some brands contain diacetyl-containing butter flavorings, which when breathed in, can cause life-threatening lung disease such as bronchiolitis obliterans, according to research from Brown University. And, in many popcorn manufacturing plant workers, it has. While some manufacturers have subbed out diacetyl with other chemicals, study researchers believe many of them may be just as harmful. If you have a hankering for popcorn, pop it yourself on the stove or in an air popper.

7. Toaster Pastries

“My local food bank has stopped taking these,” White says. “If your food bank doesn’t want them, they have to be bad. I honestly think they are one of the worst foods you could possibly eat.” These are typically high in sugar, trans fats, and low in protein and fiber. Plus, they have minimal vitamins and minerals. And just look at the ingredients list. It’s staggering that food manufacturers could even manage to fit all of those ridiculously long chemical names on the package.
#8422
4. Fast-Food Burgers

“Ultra cheap food is made from ultra cheap ingredients, and burgers are no different,” Fear says. “Even if you try to minimize the bacon, fries, soda, cheeses, and sauces added to your fast-food meal, the meat in your burger is a far cry from what you’d buy from a butcher. In one Annals of Diagnostic Pathology study, researchers studied eight fast-food brands and found that all of their burgers contained between 2.1 percent and 14.8 percent meat. The rest was water, connective tissue, blood vessels, nerves, fat, cartilage, and, in some, even parasites. Gag.

5. Donuts

“Considering that refined grains, sugar, and deep-fried foods are all independently unhealthy, you have to admire the donut for falling into all three categories,” Fear says. And, as if the 400-plus calories of sugar and fat (including trans fat) per serving wasn’t bad enough, some food manufacturers and donut shops use nanoparticles such as titanium dioxide, which the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans.
#8423
2. Margarine

Billed as a healthy alternative to butter, margarine’s trans fats, which put you at risk for heart disease and diabetes, are far worse than the natural saturated fat you’ll find in butter, Fear says. Does your margarine’s label say, “0 trans fat.” That might be a flat-out lie. The Food and Drug Administration currently allows food manufacturers to claim their products are trans-fat free as long as they contain less than 0.5 grams of trans fat in each recommended serving. While you’re tossing out your margarine, you should also take a look at the labels on any frozen food and bakery items you have in your kitchen. Many contain margarine as an ingredient, Fear says.

3. Sugary Cereals

Millions of guys start each and every day in one of the worst ways possible. High in sugar and low in nutrition, sugary cereals set you up for fat gain and a 3pm slump. Meanwhile, it’s basically impossible to eat a recommended serving of cereal, which, for many brands, is just ¾ of a cupâ€"not even half a bowl. “The sugar and crunch produces a dopamine surge in the brain, which urges us to keep going,” Fear says. And since most guys don’t buy cereal in single-serving packages, it’s easy to eat five or more servings in a single sitting. Congratulations, you’ve just consumed three days’ worth of sugar.

Health and Food / 10 Foods To Stop Eating Today

Yahoo Health â€" Mon, May 11, 2015

Say sayonara to your sugary cereal.

“I need to eat healthier.” That’s been your refrain, for what, the past five years? Get it together, man. If you’re ready to take steps towards better health and, naturally, a better body, start today. Step 1: Ban these 10 foods from your pie-hole and never look back. (Don’t worry, pie’s not on the list.)

1. Processed Meats

In a 2013 study published in BMC Medicine, researchers concluded that of 26,344 deaths studied, high consumption of processed meat was responsible for 3.3 percent of them. Apart from being packed with preservatives and sodium, processed, packaged meats are high in nitrates, which have been linked to stomach cancer, says Jim White, R.D., spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics and owner of Jim White Fitness training studios. And many processed meats are shockingly low in protein, giving your cold-cut sandwich little if any redeeming qualities, says dietician Georgie Fear, R.D., author of Lean Habits for Lifelong Weight Loss.

Hello Tisai,

I know na you are a good person, it's just that nahigugma ka sa tawong di angay nga matingban sa imong pagbati.

Sakto ang imong desisyon. Mas paborable usa ka pamilya ang masalbar, kesa magmalipayon apan di sab tim-os.

Do what is right and I know nasayod ka sa akong buot pasabot.

I know you just want your heart to be happy, apan unsaon man kini kung may usa ka pamilyang nag-antus.

Mosugot man o dili ang imong uyab, i-distansiya ang imong kaugalingon kaniya.

Mas maayo man gud nang mahigugma ka nga wa kay tawong napasakitan o naghilak sa hilum.

Sakit man kini, apan the truth will set us free.

Dili man sa tanang higayon nga magpuyo kita sa bakak ug di atubangon ang kamatuoran.

Unsa mang isyu anang uyab nimo ug iyang asawa, let them finish or discuss it. Gawas sa problema.

Give yourself a break, a time to heal and find more meaning nganong nahitabo kini kanimo.

Don't blame yourself. Move on. Aduna pa'y mas daghang makabuluhanon nga butang nga angayan nimong tutukan.

DEAR Heartline,

Maayong adlaw kanimo.

1. Container Conscious

Since bacteria and fungi accelerate the natural deterioration of cut flowers, it’s imperative to washâ€"thoroughly washâ€"whatever vessel you’re planning to display your blooms in. When cleaning the container, use hot and soapy water. Or, if you like, disinfect the vessel with a solution of diluted household bleach (one part bleach for every 10 parts water). Finish up by rinsing with plain water.

2. Careful Cutting

Clipping flowers from your garden? Try to do so early in the morning, before the heat of day saps vigor from the blooms. Along with your pruner, remember to bring a bucket of tepid water. As you cut each flower, place it into the bath so as to prevent the end of the stem from drying out and sealing off.

If working with store-bought flowers, remove about one inch from the bottom of each stem. Make your cut at an angle, under a running tap. Shortening the stem encourages the flower to take up water again. Before setting your bouquet into its container, remove the lower leaves to minimize decay.

3. Feeding Frenzy

Rather than simply filling your chosen container with water, many recommend keeping cut flowers suspended in a solution comprised of one part lemon-lime soda, three parts water, and, for every quart of liquid, a quarter-teaspoon of household bleach. Don’t use diet soda; the full-calorie sugar provides valuable nourishment to the flowers. Meanwhile, the bleach keeps harmful bacteria at bay.

Having taken all the right steps toward keeping your cut flowers flesh, go ahead and set them out on a surface in your home. Be aware, however, that not all surfaces are equally conducive to flower longevity. Avoid putting blooms in direct sunlight, near heating vents, or next to heat-generating appliances.

It’s amazing to see how much brightness and cheer a simple vase of flowers can introduce to a room. But like other forms of beauty, bouquets are a fleeting treat, and it’s only a matter of days before they wilt away. Though you cannot prevent the inevitable, there are a few ways to forestall it. First, check to see whether the florist included a packet of flower food with your purchase. Believe it or not, that stuff actually works. If there’s no flower food availableâ€"if, for instance, you cut the flowers in your own gardenâ€"try one of these time-tested tricks to keep cut flowers fresh just a little bit longer.

2 dead after Typhoon ‘Dodong’ passes Cagayan[//size]

A father and his son were electrocuted while checking the roof of their house in Aparri, Cagayan, on Sunday morning as Typhoon “Dodong” (international name Noul) was approaching the province, police said on Monday.

Many of the people who evacuated from the storm’s path started to return home late Sunday night, after Dodong â€" the fourth and strongest storm to hit the Philippines so far this year â€" whipped coastal villages with wind gusts of up to 220 kilometers (137 miles) per hour.

Authorities said they were not expecting significant casualties after most heeded pre-emptive evacuation orders issued from Friday.

Again, with that in mind, it’s important to know where America’s new arrivals are coming from in order to best plan for the future. While Mexico is the top origin by a large margin, other countries are catching up. Here are the top ten countries of origin of immigrants now living in the U.S., with the percentage each contributes to the more than 41 million total immigrant population:

Guatemala: 2%
Dominican Republic: 2%
South Korea: 3%
Cuba: 3%
El Salvador: 3%
Vietnam: 3%
The Philippines: 4%
China: 5%
India: 5%
Mexico: 28%

Of that 41 million people (which includes both documented and undocumented immigrants), dissecting the countries of origin is important for a couple of reasons. One, it gives us an inkling as to the future makeup of the U.S. in terms of workforce integration, and two, because the future of the U.S. economy will rely very heavily on immigrant labor to keep pace with the rest of the world.

With that said, to fully understand the American workforce and the future of the U.S. economy, it’s important to know who will make up that workforce. Luckily, the Migration Policy Institute has some hard data to look at.

Of the 41 million first-generation immigrants living in the U.S., the biggest subset, 28%, have made their way to America from Mexico. That’s by far where most immigrants are coming from, although as explained before, India and China are quickly gaining ground. As of 2013, research shows that Asians are now the quickest-growing ethnic group in the U.S., with that growth being fueled in large part thanks to immigration. China has become the top country of origin for new immigrants as well.

What that means is that not only will America be seeing some demographic changes on a large scale in the near future, but also that different economic sectors will probably go through some transitions as well. While immigrants coming from Mexico and Central America are often written off as unskilled and thus relegated to jobs involving manual labor, immigrants from India and China are coming with college degrees and an ability to speak English.

That gives them a leg up in many respects, but also poses a threat to natives in terms of employment. While immigrants from south of the border typically find jobs in areas where Americans are unwilling to look, immigrants from Asia are looking for jobs in tech companies and other more competitive fields.

This is a good thing in many ways, and has actually been a stated goal of the Obama administration â€" to attract talented immigrants to help spur economic growth. But a more competitive economy may scare Americans, particularly those with similar skill sets to new arrivals who may be willing to work for smaller paychecks. That’s not to say that American jobs are in trouble right this very minute, but a morphing labor force will, sooner or later, experience some growing pains.

The face of the American workforce is constantly changing. During the early days of the Republic, immigrants from Europe flooded the continent, a trend that largely continued into the 20th century. While that legacy endured for generations, the waves of incoming peoples started to include a more diverse mix â€" composed not merely of European groups, but also Asian, Latin American, and African as well, although sometimes unfortunately not always by their own free will.

America truly is a country composed almost entirely of immigrants â€" whether from Europe, Asia, Africa, or Latin America. These days, we most commonly think of immigrants as flooding into the country from our southern border, typically from Mexico and Central America. Overall, this is correct. The majority of America’s immigrant population is made up of people coming from not only Mexico, but also Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and others.

But there are other countries seeing fairly massive movements of people to the United States as well, most notably from the Asian continent.

According to the Center for Immigration Studies, the total immigration population in the United States swelled to 41.3 million in 2013, double what it was 23 years prior in 1990. That population spike has largely been supplied by newcomers from India and China, and because of economic conditions in Central America and Mexico, where violence and poverty have driven people from their native countries to the U.S.

When Will You Marry? (Tahitian: Nafea faa ipoipo) is an oil painting from 1892 by the French Post-Impressionist artist Paul Gauguin. On loan to the Kunstmuseum in Basel, Switzerland for nearly a half-century, it was sold privately by the family of Rudolf Staechelin to an unknown buyer, reportedly to Qatar Museums, in February 2015 for close to $300m (£197m), the highest price ever paid for a work of art. The painting is on exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler, Riehen, until 28 June 2015. --Wiki

Mixed reactions

Lawmakers from the LP voiced mixed reactions to President Aquino’s disclosure that he had discussioms with Poe on the 2016 elections.

Quezon City Rep. Winston Castelo said Roxas remains the LP’s “sentimental choice” for standard bearer but that party members should also respect Aquino’s prerogative to make his choice, as long as that choice shares his vision and programs for the country.

He said other possible choices for LP standard bearer are Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr., “who has a sterling performance as a local government executive and leader of Congress,” as well as Sens. Francis Escudero and Alan Peter Cayetano.

Budget Secretary Florencio Abad, an LP stalwart, told The STAR yesterday: “As far as the Liberal Party is concerned, (Interior and Local Government) Secretary Mar Roxas is still the party’s presidential standard bearer, and the party will push his candidacy in 2016,” Budget Secretary Florencio Abad, an LP stalwart, told The STAR yesterday.

Although Aquino reiterated that his choices would not be limited to LP members, Abad said “the President could be thinking beyond 2016, beyond the term 2016-2022.”

LP members had expressed belief that Roxas for president with Poe as his running mate would be the team to beat in 2016.

Poe has been leading surveys for vice president and has recently been climbing up in ratings for presidential bets currently ruled by Vice President Jejomar Binay.

Roxas’ wife, broadcast journalist Korina Sanchez, recently told the media the decision on whether her husband would run would be known in June, as the President has said.

ABS-CBN News said the President told reporters covering him in Canada that he was getting everybody’s inputs and not just the established political parties. Aquino is in Canada for a state visit.

The groups include non-government organizations, as well as civil society groups and people’s organizations.

“All the voices of every sector, of every branch of this coalition must be heard and preserved,” Aquino said.

Aquino also dismissed criticisms that the Jan. 25 Mamasapano incident had diminished his endorsement power.

“If we judge it by the attacks that are still the same, if not even more vociferous from my critics, then I think even my critics will say that the endorsement value is still present,” he said.

The recent framework nuclear agreement with Iran that allows the country to become a nuclear state within 10 years was not well received by its Arab countries, which fear a nuclear Iran will attempt its own form of Muslim caliphate in the region.

At the summit, leaders of Gulf nations will be looking for assurance that Obama has their support when the region feels under siege from Islamic extremists and Syria, Iraq and Yemen are in various states of chaos. Arab allies also feel threatened by Iran's rising influence and worry the nuclear pact taking shape with the United States, Iran and other nations may embolden Tehran to intrude more aggressively in countries of the region.

Jon Alterman of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the action was definitely a snub, though he said it can also be a blessing for the administration.

"It holds within it a hidden opportunity, because senior U.S. officials will have an unusual opportunity to take the measure of Mohammed bin Salman, the very young Saudi defense minister and deputy crown prince, with whom few have any experience," Alterman told the Times.

"For the White House though, it sends an unmistakable signal when a close partner essentially says he has better things to do than go to Camp David with the president, just a few days after the White House announced he’d have a private meeting before everything got underway," he said.

Reuters quoted an  unnamed senior U.S. official saying the monarch's decision to skip the summit was "not in response to any substantive issue."

"We first learned of the king's possible change of plans from the Saudis on Friday night," the official said. "This was confirmed by the Saudis on Saturday. We coordinated closely with our Saudi partners on the alternate arrangement and timing of the announcement, and look forward to welcoming Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef and Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman."

In a statement, al-Jubeir said the summit Thursday coincides with a humanitarian cease-fire in the conflict in Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition is fighting Shiite rebels known as Houthis. He said Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, who is also interior minister, would lead the Saudi delegation and the king's son, Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is defense minister, will also attend.

President Barack Obama had planned to meet Salman one-on-one a day before the gathering of leaders at the presidential retreat.

The king, who took power in January after his brother King Abdullah died, has not traveled abroad since his ascension to the throne.

As recently as Friday, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest was saying the Saudi king would attend the meeting to "resume consultations on a wide range of regional and bilateral issues." Sources say military cooperation is the central focus of the talks.

According to Arab officials quoted by the Times, Salman's decision not to attend is seen as a signal he is unhappy with what the United States has offered as assurances that America will protect its Arab allies again Iran.

Saudi King Salman Skipping Obama's Camp David Summit
Sunday, 10 May 2015 07:52 PM
By Greg Richter and Newsmax Wires

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia â€" Saudi Arabia's King Salman will not attend a Camp David summit of U.S. and allied Arab leaders, his foreign minister, Adel al-Jubeir, said Sunday.

The New York Times described the king's decision not to attend as an apparent signal of his displeasure with the United States over Iran, a growing regional enemy to Saudi Arabia.

The Associated Press, however, reported that the White House did not take Salman's decision to skip the summit as a sign of any substantial disagreement with the United States.

"If one wants to snub you, they let you know it in different ways," an unnamed administration official told the Times.

Charlotte the Japanese monkey to keep her name despite right royal row

City officials rule out complaints after baby macaque at Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden given same name as British princess

A monkey born in a Japanese zoo will keep the name Charlotte, despite concerns that the decision could offend British royals.

Oita city officials have settled a national debate by saying they would stick to their first choice because there was no protest from the royal family in the UK.

The flap began on Wednesday when the Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden called a newborn macaque Charlotte after the name came top in a public ballot. Immediately after the decision was announced, the zoo received complaints from some people who thought it was disrespectful.

Kyodo News said that Japanese complainants had asked how people in Japan would react if a British zoo were to name an animal after a member of Japan’s revered imperial family.

Also called the Habsburg Lip and the Austrian Lip, the Habsburg Jaw is a physical condition known by the modern term mandibular prognathism. It is characterized by a jutting lower jaw, often accompanied by an abnormally thick lower lip and sometimes including a tongue that is abnormally large.

The House of Habsburg is associated with the Habsburg Jaw because so many of its members had it. It really became pronounced in the line of Spanish Habsburgs, and specifically because of inbreeding. -- http://yveinthesky.tumblr.com/

Science and Research / Mandibular prognathism
May 11, 2015, 11:39:09 AM
Pathologic mandibular prognathism is a potentially disfiguring genetic disorder where the lower jaw outgrows the upper, resulting in an extended chin. It is sometimes a result of acromegaly.

This condition is colloquially known as Habsburg jaw, Habsburg lip or Austrian Lip (see House of Habsburg) due to its prevalence in that bloodline. The trait is easily traceable in portraits of Habsburg family members.[5] This has provided tools for people interested in studying genetics and pedigree analysis. Most instances are considered polygenetic.

It is alleged to have been derived through a female from the princely Polish family of Piasts, its Masovian branch. The deformation of lips is clearly visible on tomb sculptures of Mazovian Piasts in the St. John's Cathedral in Warsaw. However this may be, there exists evidence that the trait is longstanding. It is perhaps first observed in Maximilian I (1459â€"1519).

Traits such as these that were common to royal families are believed to have been passed on and exaggerated over time through royal intermarriage which caused acute inbreeding. Due to the large amount of politically motivated intermarriage among Habsburgs, the dynasty was virtually unparalleled in the degree of its inbreeding. Charles II of Spain is said to have had the most pronounced case of the Habsburg jaw on record. His jaw was so deformed that he was unable to chew.

General Topic / Re: The Sunni-Shia Divide
May 10, 2015, 03:33:15 PM
Extremist groups have come to rely on satellite television and high-speed Internet over the past two decades to spread hate speech and rally support. Fundamentalist Sunni clerics, many sponsored by wealthy Sunnis from Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states, have popularized anti-Shia slurs. Shia religious scholars have also taken to the airwaves, mocking and cursing the first three caliphs and Aisha, one of Mohammed’s wives.

Sectarian rhetoric dehumanizing the “other” is centuries old. But the volume is increasing. Dismissing Arab Shias as Safawis, a term that paints them as Iranian agents (from the Safavid empire) and hence traitors to the Arab cause, is increasingly common in Sunni rhetoric. Hard-line Sunni Islamists have used harsher historic terms such as rafidha, rejecters of the faith, and majus, Zoroastrian or crypto Persian, to describe Shias. Iranian officials, Iraq’s prime minister, and Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, routinely describe their Sunni opponents as takfiris (code for al-Qaeda terrorists) and Wahhabis. This cycle of demonization has been exacerbated throughout the Muslim world.

For Sunni extremists, new technologies and social-media channels have revolutionized recruitment opportunities. Fundamentalists no longer have to infiltrate mainstream mosques and attract recruits surreptitiously, but can now disseminate their call to jihad and wait for potential recruits to contact them. These channels aren’t as useful for recruiting Shia militants, who benefit from state support in Syria, Iraq, and Iran, and can openly advertise their calls for sectarian jihad.

Tens of thousands of Syrian Sunnis joined rebel groups such as Ahrar al-Sham, the Islamic Front, and al-Qaeda’s Nusra Front, which all employ anti-Shia rhetoric; similar numbers of Syrian Shias and Alawis enlisted with an Iran-backed militia known as the National Defense Force to fight for the Assad regime. Foreign Sunni fighters from Arab and Western countries joined the rebels, while Lebanon’s Hezbollah and some Shia militias from Iraq such as Asaib Ahl al-Haq and Kata'ib Hezbollah backed the Syrian government. Even Afghan Shia refugees in Iran have reportedly been recruited by Tehran for the war in Syria, pitting them against Sunni foreign fighters who may have forced the Afghans into exile decades earlier. Syria’s civil war has attracted more militants from more countries than were involved in the conflicts in Afghanistan, Chechnya, and Bosnia combined.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq, decimated by the “Awakening” of Sunni Iraqis who joined the fight against extremists, the U.S.-led military surge, and the death of Zarqawi, found new purpose in exploiting the vacuum left by the receding Syrian state. It established its own transnational movement known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The group expanded its grip on Sunni provinces in Iraq and eastern regions in Syria, seizing Iraq’s second-largest city, Mosul, in June 2014. It defied orders from al-Qaeda’s top commanders to curtail its transnational ambitions and extremism, which led to ISIS’s expulsion from al-Qaeda in February 2014. ISIS rebranded as the Islamic State in July 2014 and declared its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as caliph.

Conflict and chaos have played a role in the reversion to basic sectarian identity. In Iraq, for instance, remnants of the Ba’athist regime employed Sunni rhetoric to mount a resistance to the rise of Shia power following the ouster of Saddam. Sunni fundamentalists, many inspired by al-Qaeda’s call to fight Americans, flocked to Iraq from Muslim countries, attacking coalition forces and many Shia civilians. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who founded al-Qaeda’s franchise in Iraq, evoked ancient anti-Shia fatwas, or religious rulings, to spark a civil war in hopes that the Shia majority would eventually capitulate in the face of Sunni extremist violence. The Shia community absorbed thousands of deaths before fighting back with their own sectarian militias.

Syria’s civil war, which exceeded the brutality and casualty toll of Iraq’s decade-long conflict in just three years, has amplified sectarian tensions to unprecedented levels. The war began with peaceful protests in 2011 calling for an end to the Assad regime, which has ruled since 1970. The Assad family and other Alawis have stirred resentment by Syria’s majority Sunnis after decades of brutal repression and a sectarian agenda that elevated minority Alawis in government and the private sector. The 2011 protests and brutal government crackdown uncovered sectarian tensions in Syria, which have rippled across the region.

Sectarian Militants

Communal violence between Islam’s sects has been rare historically, with most of the deadly sectarian attacks directed by clerics or political leaders. Extremist groups, many of which are fostered by states, are the chief actors in sectarian killings today.

The two most prominent terrorist groups, Sunni al-Qaeda and Shia Hezbollah, have not defined their movements in sectarian terms, and have favored using anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, and anti-American frameworks to define their jihad, or struggle. They share few similarities beyond the use of violence. Hezbollah has developed a pragmatic political wing that competes in elections and is part of the Lebanese government, a path not chosen by al-Qaeda, which operates a diffuse network largely in the shadows. Both groups have deployed suicide bombers, and their attacks shifted from a focus on the West and Israel to other Muslims, such as al-Qaeda’s killing of Shia civilians in Iraq and Hezbollah’s participation in the Syrian civil war.

Practicing the Faith

Sunnis and Shias agree on the basic tenets of Islam: declaring faith in a monotheistic God and Mohammed as his messenger, conducting daily prayers, giving money to the poor, fasting during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, and performing the pilgrimage to Mecca.

There are divisions even over the precepts of Islam, but the main difference relates to authority, which sparked the political split in the seventh century and evolved into divergent interpretations of sharia, or Islamic law, and distinct sectarian identities.

Shias believe that God always provides a guide, first the Imams and then ayatollahs, or experienced Shia scholars who have wide interpretative authority and are sought as a source of emulation. The term “ayatollah” is associated with the clerical rulers in Tehran, but it’s primarily a title for a distinguished religious leader known as a marja, or source of emulation. Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, was appointed by an elected body of Iranian clerics, while maraji (plural of marja) are elevated through the religious schools in Qom, Najaf, and Karbala. Shias can choose from dozens of maraji, most of whom are based in holy cities in Iraq and Iran. Many Shias emulate a marja for religious affairs and defer to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Iran for political guidance. For Sunnis, authority is based on the Quran and the traditions of Mohammed. Sunni religious scholars, who are constrained by legal precedents, exert far less authority over their followers than their Shia counterparts.

Both sects have subdivisions. The divisions among Shias were discussed above. Four schools comprise Sunni jurisprudence: Hanafi, Shafii, Maliki, and Hanbali, the latter spawning the Wahhabi and Salafi movements in Saudi Arabia. Sunnism, a broad umbrella term for non-Shia Islam, is united on the importance of the Quran and practice of Mohammed but allows for differences in legal opinion.

In the Arab world, Shia groups supported by Iran have recently won important political victories. The Assad regime, which has ruled Syria since 1970, relies on fellow Alawis, a heterodox Shia sect that makes up about 13 percent of Syria’s population, as a pillar of its rule. Alawis dominate the upper reaches of the military and security services in Syria and are the backbone of the forces fighting to support the regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria’s civil war. Since the 2003 invasion of Iraq unseated Saddam Hussein and instituted competitive elections, the Shia majority has dominated the parliament and produced its prime ministers. Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shia militia and political movement, is the strongest political actor in Lebanon. Iran’s regional influence has swelled as its allies in these countries have accumulated power.

Sunni governments, especially Saudi Arabia, have increasingly worried about their own grips on power, a concern that was exacerbated with the protest movement that began in Tunisia in late 2010. The Arab Awakening, as the uprisings are known, spread to Bahrain and Syria, countries at the fault lines of Islam’s sectarian divide. In each, political power is held by a sectarian minorityâ€"Alawis in Syria, where Sunnis are the majority, and a Sunni ruling family in Bahrain, where Shias are the majority. The civil war in Syria, which is a political conflict at its core, has exposed sectarian tensions and become the staging ground for a vicious proxy war between the region’s major Sunni and Shia powers. Some analysts view the Syrian conflict as the last chance for Sunnis to limit and reverse the spread of Iranian power and Shia influence in the Arab world.

For their part, both mainstream and hard-line Sunnis aren’t singularly focused on oppressing Shias. They have fought against coreligionists throughout history, most recently in the successive crackdowns on the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Iraq’s 1990 invasion of Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia’s battles against al-Qaeda and related Sunni militant groups. Sharing a common Sunni identity didn’t eliminate power struggles among Sunni Muslims under secular or religious governments.

But confessional identity has resurfaced wherever sectarian violence has taken root, as in Iraq after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion removed Saddam Hussein, a dictator from the Sunni minority who ruled over a Shia-majority country. The bombing of a Shia shrine in Samara in 2006 kicked off a cycle of sectarian violence that forced Iraqis to pick sides, stirring tensions that continue today.

Saudi Arabia has a sizable Shia minority of roughly 10 percent, and millions of adherents of a puritanical brand of Sunni Islam known as Wahhabism (an offshoot of the Sunni Hanbali school) that is antagonistic to Shia Islam. The transformation of Iran into an overtly Shia power after the Islamic revolution induced Saudi Arabia to accelerate the propagation of Wahhabism, as both countries revived a centuries-old sectarian rivalry over the true interpretation of Islam. Many of the groups responsible for sectarian violence that has occurred in the region and across the Muslim world since 1979 can be traced to Saudi and Iranian sources.

Saudi Arabia backed Iraq in the 1980â€"1988 war with Iran and sponsored militants in Pakistan and Afghanistan who were primarily fighting against the Soviet Union, which had invaded Afghanistan in 1979, but were also suppressing Shia movements inspired or backed by Iran.

The transformation of Iran into an agitator for Shia movements in Muslim countries seemed to confirm centuries of Sunni suspicions that Shia Arabs answer to Persia. Many experts, however, point out that Shias aren’t monolithicâ€"for many of them, identities and interests are based on more than their confession. Iraqi Shias, for example, made up the bulk of the Iraqi army that fought Iran during the Iranâ€"Iraq War, and Shia militant groups Amal and Hezbollah clashed at times during the Lebanese civil war.

Modern Tensions

Iran’s Islamic Revolution in 1979 gave Shia cleric Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini the opportunity to implement his vision for an Islamic government ruled by the “guardianship of the jurist” (velayat-e faqih), a controversial concept among Shia scholars that is opposed by Sunnis, who have historically differentiated between political leadership and religious scholarship. Shia ayatollahs have always been the guardians of the faith. Khomeini argued that clerics had to rule to properly perform their function: implementing Islam as God intended, through the mandate of the Shia Imams.

Under Khomeini, Iran began an experiment in Islamic rule. Khomeini tried to inspire further Islamic revival, preaching Muslim unity, but supported groups in Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan, Bahrain, and Pakistan that had specific Shia agendas. Sunni Islamists, such as the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas, admired Khomeini’s success, but did not accept his leadership, underscoring the depth of sectarian suspicions.
