ROME (CNS) -- As the church is set to begin the Year of Faith and a synod on the new evangelization, the rosary can play a key role in strengthening and spreading the word of God, said a leading American expert in Marian studies.

"This Year of Faith is a call for evangelization, a new evangelization that's to start with ourselves" in reawakening one's love for Christ and then reaching out to those who have become distanced from the church, said Holy Cross Father James Phalan, director of Family Rosary International.

October is the month the church dedicates to the rosary, and the world Synod of Bishops will start Oct. 7, the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Pope Benedict XVI entrusted the synod to Mary's intercession, and he has said the rosary can stimulate missionary activity by leading Christians to meditate on the life of Jesus.

"During this Year of Faith we're to take up the rosary in our hands again," Father Phalan told Catholic News Service during a visit to Rome in mid-September.

"Mary has always been the mother of evangelization," he said, because "she's always been the one who shows us Jesus."

Blessed John Paul II said the rosary is "contemplating the face of Christ with Mary."

By praying the rosary, people are led to listen more deeply to God's word, to contemplate events in Christ's life, to see what his life means and to find Christ's presence in one's own life, Father Phalan said. "It's a way of identifying ourselves with Christ, so it's a profound path to holiness."

Praying the rosary together, especially for a family, has added beauty and power, he said.

"It opens up areas of sensitivity, areas of intimacy" because "prayer is one of the most intimate things we do," he said.

When couples or families pray the rosary together, "there's a real intimacy that's bonded in faith" that then fortifies relationships and solidifies the wider Christian community, he said.

The rosary has been "a tried and true" way to strengthen Christian life in the home and to pass on the faith from generation to generation, he said.

"I'm convinced that when we talk about the new evangelization, we need to talk about evangelization in the home," because unless one's prayer life and faith are reignited there, "it 'ain't gonna' work, frankly," he said.

Reawakening the faith in the home is not only a very effective way to develop a solid base for evangelization, it also helps families during troubled times, he said.

Family Rosary International was started by the late Holy Cross Father Patrick Peyton, who coined the phrase "A family that prays together stays together," as part of his mission to build family unity through the daily recitation of the rosary.

"He knew that something really simple" like prayer in the home could make a big difference in facing problems that seem so complex and difficult, Father Phalan said.

"Our work continues on his simple but profound insight, which is more important than ever, that family prayer can do so much in the face of the apparently chaotic situations of so many families," he said.

I told her today, "Do you know how much I have missed you?" She responded, with tears overflowing her face and falling, "I thought you didn't even want to talk to me ever again."

As I used my right hand to wipe the tears off her face, I felt the Holy Spirit within me. I apologized to her for the wrongs I did to her, and her forgiveness was the reward. How sweet it is, truly my friends, the forgiveness of a friend. How sweet is the Love of the Holy Spirit.....!

God, Truly, Is Good. I just had dinner with an old friend of mine who I had a fight with some 3 months ago. At the urging of today's mass, I invited my friend over to my apartment for dinner. We apologized to each other and I reiterated to her how important she is in my life. She cried in front of me. And I also  could not hold back the tears from my eyes, cried also. I am so blessed right now, and am joyous at the revival of our friendship. Thank you, Deacon Paul, for today's message. Lipay ko. Thank you so much Lord for this blessing... !

Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there is hatred let me bring your love;
Where there is injury your pardon, Lord;
And where there's doubt true faith in you.

Refrain:
Oh, Master grant that I may never seek
So much to be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there's despair in life let me bring hope;
Where there is darkness, only light;
And where there's sadness, ever joy.

Refrain

Make me a channel of your peace.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
In giving to all men that we receive;
And in dying that we're born to eternal life.

I attended morning Mass at 9:30 AM at St. Mary of the Lake Roman Catholic Parish. The occasion was beautiful because we had three new members being inducted into the Roman Catholic Faith Community , these were RCIA adults. In addition to these three, a little baby named Nathan was being baptized into the Church. The celebrants included Fr. Paul and Deacon Paul. It really was a beautiful Mass !

The color was blue today, signifying the first Sunday of Advent. During the observation of mass today, Deacon Paul said something that really inspired me and touched me -- and I thought I should share it with all of you here. He said this:

"In your life, you meet all kinds of people. People who you agree with and people who you don't agree with. In this advent season, I want you to think of all the blessings that God has given you , has showered you. However, I want you to think about the enemies you have -- those who are alive and those who are already dead. Think of them and pray for them."

So yes, dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, ponder on this statement as you all proceed into the Season of Advent. May God Bless all of Us!

Yours In Christ,
Lorenz

Anna, at work, the nurses usually bring pinoy food during lunch break. I befriended the pinay nurses and eventually started to eat with them ! So, one time they asked me to cook and bring food to work. I acquiesced. I made Cebuano-style Humba and Sinigang Isda. O man! Gi higop higop ang sabaw sa mga nurses. A physical therapist, named Rachelle, said to me, 'Sus naman Doc Lorenzo! Sarap na sarap ang sinigang mo!' hahaha! Now at work they always ask when I'm going to cook again. ;D

I'll make something for them again sometime this week. In honesty pod baya, they cook really good. They make really good pancit bihon, adobong manok, kare kare, fried rice etc.

I love these nurses at work. It's never a boring moment with them. ;D

Are you a possessive person?
#8326
To be honest, Yes. I do. I know it's not logical and I know it's not practical. However, I do. It's weird, eh? My actions around them are very civil, even share a smile or so, but I act quite "distant" around them.

When I saw an xgf, one who I really loved, it was she who broke up with me, with her then-fiance, I was quite distant around her. I kept on observing this new man of hers. I wanted to see who she picked over me.

When it was time to say good bye, I mustered enough strength to kiss her good bye. When I embraced her, she whispered to my ears, "It's good to see you again, Bran. You know that I will always love you, Bran."

That was more pain to my heart. :-X

Yes, I did. I terminated our relationship because I felt that she would be a "burden" to my medical studies. She didn't say anything to me except cry in front of me. The image of her tears falling down from her face will forever be in my mind. The last time I saw her was in May 2008.

I think it was a heartless move on my part. And I regret doing that to her. In hindsight.

A man who fails to love the Mass fails to love Christ. We must make an effort to "live" the Mass with calm and serenity, with devotion and affection. And this is why I have always suspected that those who want the Mass to be over with quickly show, with this insensitive attitude, that they have not yet realized what the sacrifice of the altar means.

After Andrew had stayed with Jesus and had learned much from him, he did not keep this treasure to himself, but hastened to share it with his brother Peter. Notice what Andrew said to him: “We have found the Messiah, that is to say, the Christ.” Notice how his words reveal what he has learned in so short a time. They show the power of the master who has convinced them of this truth. Andrew’s words reveal a soul waiting with the utmost longing for the coming of the Messiah, looking forward to his appearing from heaven, rejoicing when he does appear, and hastening to announce to great an event to others. To support one another in the things of the spirit is the true sign of good will between brothers, loving kinship and sincere affection.

As to the treasons which have been laid to my charge, and for which I come here to suffer, I desire you all to bear witness with me that I am thereto altogether innocent. I am a Catholic man and a priest; in that Faith I have lived, and in that Faith do I intend to die. If you esteem my Religion treason, then I am guilty; as for the other treason, I never committed any, God is my judge.

With this new technology, there will be interoperability between radiology oncologists and pulmonologists; between thoracic oncologists with thoracic surgeons and cardiothoracic surgeons. Kuyaw kaayo oy. Even a General Surgeon can use this simple procedure with ease and be qualified to do thoracic bronchioectomy if needed be and the total procedure would take less than 10 minutes.

Some 30 years ago, this was unheard of. There is no more need for unnecessary exploratory surgery anymore. 8)

The DOWN SIDE of EBUS:

1. Cost. A single tube costs $ 1200 + additional costs of customization

2. The machines are expensive, starting at $100,000.

3. The emerging markets EX-US cannot afford this technology , with the exception of Europe.

WHY I LIKE EBUS ?

1. This reduces the reliance on pulmonologists on radiology oncologists

2. The specificity in locating tumorous nodules ! We can excise nodules as small as 2 mm.

3. Speed ! The procedure takes less than 5 minutes to do !

4. We can screen, identify, stage, and make diagnosis and plan for treatment in such rapid manner

5. This technology, once it is imported to emerging markets abroad ,can make effective change for their respective health systems.

Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) Biopsy of Mediastinal Lymph Nodes

Mediastinoscopy is the ‘gold standard’ method for determining the presence of nodal metastases in the mediastinum. Generally performed as an outpatient surgical procedure, it is associated with a low rate of serious adverse effects (<1%) and the procedure is highly accurate, with false negative rates reported to be between 6% and 9%. Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) guided fine needle aspiration biopsy of mediastinal nodes offers a less invasive alternative for histologic sampling of the mediastinal nodes. The procedure has been widely adopted by pulmonologists and is poised to replace mediastinoscopy in the future. For thoracic surgeons, the technique can be easily learned and it may be important to do so if our specialty is to maintain its traditional and important role in the diagnosis and staging of thoracic malignancies.

The EBUS bronchoscope (BF-UC160F-OL8; Olympus America Inc., Center Valley, PA) is similar in dimensions to a standard adult fiber optic bronchoscope. The 6 mm diameter scope has a curvilinear ultrasound (US) probe at its distal end which provides a 50 degrees linear continuous B-mode ultrasound image, with color Doppler capability to aid identification of vascular structures . Proximal to the US probe, and at 30 degrees to the long axis of the bronchoscope, are a fiber optic lens and a biopsy channel, through which a 22-G biopsy needle can be passed (NA-201SX-4022; Olympus America Inc., Center Valley, PA) . A disposable latex balloon is placed over the US probe, which is inflated with sterile water to provide a fluid interface between the probe and the tracheal wall.

Operative Steps

The biopsy needle consists of a 22-guage needle with inner stylet housed in a flexible sheath, both of which may move independently of one another relative to the bronchoscope. The biopsy needle is passed through the biopsy channel and the housing secured to the bronchoscope by a flange. There are two main techniques to perform transbronchial puncture. The ‘quick jab’ technique is easiest and most useful for the subcarinal nodes or nodes along the main stem bronchi where the cartilage is thinner (Figures 8 and 9). With the node visualized by US, the sheath is advanced out of the end of the scope until the top right corner of the ultrasound image becomes slightly indented. This indicates that the end of the sheath is in contact with the wall of the bronchus and it is therefore safe to advance the needle. The guard for the needle is then released and using a quick jab the needle is plunged into the lymph node. If the needle is more slowly advanced there is a tendency for it to push the wall of the bronchus away from the scope, thus losing contact with the balloon and resulting in image loss. Once the needle is visualized within the lymph node, the stylet is moved in an out a few times to dislodge any bronchial epithelium that may have entered the needle, and then withdrawn. Suction is applied to the biopsy needle (typically negative 20 cc of air using a Vac-Loc syringe) and the needle passed in and out of the node approximately 10 times under US visualization. Suction is then released and the entire biopsy needle withdrawn. Smears are prepared by advancing the needle out of the sheath, reinserting the stylet and applying a drop of the aspirate to frosted glass slides. Air is used to ‘flush’ remaining aspirate material either onto additional slides or into RPMI medium for cell block analysis.

Specificity is as high as 90%.

EBUS being performed under general intravenous anesthesia with use of laryngeal mask airway. The CV-180 video processor enables picture-in-picture display, which allows easy correlation between visualized anatomy and the ultrasonic image.

Yesterday was an AMAZING DAY! I attended an 8 hour-long Pulmonology Conference. We had top knotch docs, many of whom were the Directors of the Pulmonology Departments, some were from Henry Ford Medical System in Detroit, some were from Duke University Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, Swedish Health Center , and one was from the Jewish Hospital System in Denver. Amazing. One thing that I learned in that lecture was the profundity of the new EBUS system, which uses new techniques in robotic radiology oncology for treatment of lung cancer. We were given a lecture also on the new techniques by gamma knife, as well as cyber knife, and the new SBRT techniques to identify tumorous nodules and excise them when they are but only 2 - 2. 5 mm in size. These new EBUS systems , however, cost $100,000. One of the presenters had also talked about the expansion of the organization's interest into the emerging markets -- ASIA in particular. It is apparently interesting to know that in China, there are over 360 million smokers there who smoke over half a pack a day. This is hazardous and is of concern for the Chinese Government.

I was able to meet the Director of the Pulmonology Department at Henry Ford Hospital, a pre-eminent hospital system from Detroit, Michigan. We shared a brief conversation during the breaks in this 8 hour conference. 8)

The conference started at 8 AM, and did not end till 5 PM. It was held in the Intercontinental Hotel in Rosemont, Illinois. ;D

Does not also mean walay disagreement ang relasyon pero at the end magkasinabot gihapon. For me i did ask and pray to God with the help of mother Mary the qualities of the person i will be with for the rest of my life. Its a miracle gitubag sa Ginoo ako gipangayo ug naminyo ko sa usa ka Pinoy who has all the qualities that i ask. It was a bonus for me na Pinoy but if ever i've met before a man who has those qualities bisan uban lahi pa unja magkasinabot aw for me its not a problem.

Powerful lagi ang intercession ni Blessed Mother Mary. :)

ah, the intricacies of intercultural dynamic. your friend, being from south africa, is brought up in the western notion of individuality, the spouse, being chinese, is brought up in the confucian culture of filial piety and filial togetherness. good luck to them both na lang. be strong and carry on. 8)

I'm ok now. It started around mga 4pm mao nag-early dinner ko unya mga 7pm, mao gihapon akong gibati thats why i started eating the Tums. was able to sleep around 11pm and woke up feeling good

Okay. I see. Are you eating a lot of acidic food, Anna? Any foods that have low pH can trigger an acidotic state in the stomach. If you notice that you eat / drink a lot of acidic food , that can actually precipitate an ulcer. So try to lower the intake of acidic food.

Don't over-use the tums, Anna. That is calcium carbonate  and too much of that can cause hypercalcemia (too much calcium in the blood) and cause rebound increase in acidity. Pa bantay kai intoxication can cause hypokalemia (very low potassium in the blood).

Feel better, my dear.

Bran, naa man gud sa akong huna2x nga the same lahi man gani dli magsabtanay, unsa na kaha og maka-bana ka og foreigner... maglisod gani ko sabot sa kultura natong mga Pinoy, how much more sa culture sa uban :(

You do have a point, Anna. I understand your view point. When I was in college, I dated mostly White women only because i didn't find any pinays (there are so very few in my college!). I had my share of serious relationships with women of different races and cultures, but in my mind, i had always wanted to date a Filipina. I did not date Filipina or try Filipina until I met my gf , who i had met in my 2nd year of medical school. I fell in love with her from day one. There really is something different , unique about pinay. I guess it helped in the fact that her parents were also immigrants like mine, that we both were from the visayas (taga bohol ko, taga iloilo sija), we both have very strong personalities and driven to succeed in studies. But there is something deeper -- her religion, her faith, her loving qualities, my goodness when she loves, she truly does love. I guess its a Filipina quality that when they open up to a man, they truly open their entire heart and the overwhelming support, adoration, respect they give is nothing short of God's blessings! I guess that's why a lot of foreign men like to marry Filipinas.

Don't get me wrong, there are times that i clash with my gf, we are so alike and so hard headed that it is inevetible to have two very head strong people clash. but when we argue, it is only for a short while. She has a way about her , i can't explain it, that can soften my heart.

She just says to me , "Toto...akig ka sa akon? Indi mo ba palangga ko sa imo?"

Na, ma wa na gajod ahoang ikapasuko. Gone. She has that effect on me.

For me, personal opinion lang ni nako ha, i am open to mixed relationships. There are very many beautiful and wonderful and loving white women, latina women and black women out there. But i find myself more at home and can relate to my babycakes more. It's interesting really. Blood smells blood. 8)

Anything mixed with Filipino is beautiful. Many of my white friends agree that Filipinas are beautiful. A colleague of mine at the hospital, who is married to a Filipina, said, "My kids are so beautiful because of their Filipina mom!"

Tinuod bitaw. Filipino-mixed kids are beautiful; be they Filipino-Black, Filipino-White, or Filipino-Latino.

However, the pure bred Filipinos are also beautiful. ;D
