THE Bureau of Customs (BOC) has filed smuggling charges against the owner of a used clothing or ukay-ukay store in Cagayan de Oro City at the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Cha Evangelos Tiu-Andit, owner of ERS Surplus on Gusa Highway, was charged with illegally importing a shipment of used clothing valued at P10 million.

The shipment arrived in a 40-foot container declared as containing bedsheets, pillowcases, and comforters.

It arrived at the Cagayan de Oro port last March 18.

A Customs broker, Yolanda Mondragon Narandan, was charged with Andit.

"I am warning all importers and traders, especially those involved in the illegal importation of used clothing to stop what they are doing. We will never compromise the interest of our local industries and for that we will not allow illegal importation of used clothing," said Customs Commissioner Alberto Lina in a statement. (Sunnex)

Da Vinci is the one that’s credited with being the first to illustrate the ancient idea in a way that’s anatomically correct. While there’s no doubt that he did have unprecedented knowledge of human anatomy, we now think that he didn’t so much come up with the idea on his own but swiped it from one of his contemporaries.

Making man fit inside both shapes was, for a long time, a lot more complicated than we think of today. The original writings that specified what the image would look like also had a set of guidelines. For example, the man’s navel should be at the center of the image. People had tried and failed to produce the image as it was described, until da Vinci made the geometric shapes off-center.

It wasn’t his idea, though. Renaissance researcher Claudio Sgarbi has recently uncovered an earlier drawing by an architect named Giacomo Andrea da Ferrara that provides the answer to the pictographic riddle. Giacomo Andrea’s version of the drawing is full of corrections, as if he were messing about with the idea before hitting on the right answer. He and da Vinci knew each other, and we even know that they had dinner together around the time da Vinci drew his version.

We only have hints about who Giacomo Andrea really was, and he seems to be quite literally revolutionary. At the time, the French were occupying Milan. Da Vinci was on friendly terms with them, but Giacomo Andrea was, apparently, something of a guerrilla fighter against the occupiers. He was eventually arrested, hanged, quartered, and wiped from the history books. -- http://listverse.com/

By now, the sketch of the Vitruvian Man is so commonplace that when we see it, we tend not to even look twice at it. It’s a man inside both a circle and a square, and our reaction to it today doesn’t really do it justice. The idea that man would fit inside both shapes is one that goes back to antiquity, and it has more meaning than simply being a neat geometric trick. It was thought that the circle was our representation of the divine, while the square was our symbol for the secular. The idea that they could both be combined with man in the center was to combine the heavenly and the earthly and to be able to show that man had been made in the image of both. It was an idea set forth first by the writer Vitruvius, hence the figure’s name.

BERLIN (Reuters) - German police detained a 25-year-old prostitute for keeping a three-week-old lamb named Birke as a pet in a Munich brothel, police said in a statement.

The woman was also briefly detained for drug possession - she and her lamb were discovered during a narcotics raid. Prostitution itself is legal in Germany. Keeping a lamb in a brothel evidently is not.

Police said the woman showed them a letter from veterinary authorities laying out the conditions in which a lamb should be raised. Those conditions did not include inside a brothel, so she was forbidden to keep the lamb, police said.

"The lamb was turned over to an animal protection group," the statement said. "During its short stay with police, the lamb felt comfortable and starting drinking from a bottle."

Gilman was accused of breaking into a West Seattle home and raping a sleeping man, according to a Seattle police report. The 31-year-old man told police he went to bed on June 17, 2013, and awoke from a deep sleep to find Gilman on top of him and having sexual intercourse with him.

Chantae Gilman. (Photo: Seattle Police Dept.)

He told police Gilman told him to be quiet as he tried to get out from under her. He said Gilman refused to leave and then asked him for a cigarette, so he pushed her out of the residence, “threw a cigarette passed her and slammed his door shut.”

Police said Gilman told them that she didn’t know the man and didn’t recall being at his home or having sex with him.

Court documents said a DNA test showed that Gilman’s DNA had been on the victim’s body.

Last year, Gilman’s lawyer told the judge that Gilman suffers from mental illness and has a history of drug abuse. She is a mother of four children and, at the time, was pregnant with her fifth child, lawyers said.

Gilman has prior felony convictions for possession of a stolen vehicle and attempted robbery.

Science and Research / Re: Oxbow Lake
May 22, 2015, 11:06:39 AM

Notes

The river is meandering across the valley
The river is eroding laterally (from side to side)
The river erodes the outside of the bends and deposits on the inside so its course is changing
This erosion narrows the neck of the meander
Often during a flood the river will cut through the neck
The river continues in the new bed and the meander is abandoned
New deposition seals off the ends and the cut-off becomes an ox-bow lake

(4) Then the meander is removed from the river's current and the horseshoe shaped oxbow lake is formed.

Without a current to move the water along, sediment builds up along the banks and fills in the lake.

An oxbow is a crescent-shaped lake lying alongside a winding river. The oxbow lake is created over time as erosion and deposits of soil change the river's course. You can see how an oxbow lake takes shape below:

(1) On the inside of the loop, the river travels more slowly leading to deposition of silt.

(2) Meanwhile water on the outside edges tends to flow faster, which erodes the banks making the meander even wider.

(3) Over time the loop of the meander widens until the neck vanishes altogether.

Common sense tells us this is not the case, and Schrödinger used this to highlight the limits of the Copenhagen interpretation when applied to practical situations. The cat is actually either dead or alive, whether or not it has been observed.

“[It] prevents us from so naively accepting as valid a "blurred model" for representing reality,” Schrödinger wrote. “In itself, this would not embody anything unclear or contradictory.”

Schrödinger’s Cat has been used to illustrate the differences between emerging theories in quantum mechanics, by testing how they would approach the experiment.

For example, the ‘many worlds interpretation’, developed in the 1950s, would argue that when the box is opened, the observer and dead-and-alive cat split into two realities, in one of which the observer sees a dead cat and the other an alive one.

The experiment has also been widely influential in popular culture, having been referenced in TV shows such as Futurama, Doctor Who and The Big Bang Theory as well as appearing in the works of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett.

Millions of cows, pigs, chickens, sheep and other animals who are born into this world are confined, genetically altered, mutilated, denied the companionship of friends and family, among other systemic abuses, because we’re taught to believe they are simple creatures who are less intelligent than us, or to ignore the ethical questions surrounding their treatment and use entirely.

Hopefully stories about animals like Mr. G and Jellybean, and dozens of others, will continue to inspire people to see them as individuals, instead of commodities for us to eat, wear and amuse ourselves with.

Animal Place is asking us to honor Mr. G and Jellybean’s lives and love by sharing their story to help raise awareness about the emotional lives of animals and by showing millions of others who are at our mercy compassion by ditching animal products.

For more information about their work, residents and how to help, visit Animal Place at http://animalplace.org/.
#8342
The story of Mr. G and Jellybean is one among many showing us just how deeply animals feel and offers us a reminder that we’re not the only beings with individual personalities who are capable of experiencing a wide range of emotions, having preferences and forming deep bonds with each other.

These two will be permanent residents at Animal Place, which hopes their story will help visitors and others come to understand the emotional lives of non-human animals.

As of this month, Rescue Ranch has rescued, re-homed or given permanent refuge to 13,351 chickens, 25 turkeys, 6 sheep, 7 pigs, 1 duck and 16 goats since it opened in 2010. That’s a huge number of animals to deal with on an individual level, yet such a tiny fraction of the total who are raised and killed on farms every year.
#8343
According to Animal Place, Mr. G was inconsolable, refusing to eat and spending his days lying in the corner of his stall with his head down. No treats were enough to entice him to eat or move. After health problems were ruled out, it became obvious to his rescuers that he was mourning the loss of his best friend. They decided a reunion was in order and a volunteer took a 14 hour roundtrip to get Jellybean. They describe the reunion:

When Jellybean entered Mr. G‘s stall, he could not believe his eyes. In fact, he did a double-take! It was only when he smelled Jellybean‘s unique scent that Mr. G realized the truth â€" his dearest friend had returned!

Mr. G erupted from his prone position, snorting and inhaling Jellybean‘s presence. He rushed after her into their outdoor pasture. The magical moment came when Mr. G began eating from Jellybean‘s bowl!

The two had lived together for years but were split up and taken in by two different sanctuaries after being confiscated from a neglectful situation. Mr. G was taken in by Animal Place’s Rescue Ranch in Grass Valley, Calif.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stéphane Breitwieser (born 1 October 1971) is a Frenchman notorious for his art thefts between 1995 and 2001. He admitted to stealing 239 artworks and other exhibits, worth an estimated US$1.4 billion (£960m), from 172 museums while travelling around Europe and working as a waiter, an average of one theft every 15 days. The Guardian called him "arguably the world's most consistent art thief."

He differs from most other art thieves in that he did not steal for any profit motive. He was a self-described art connoisseur who stole in order to build a vast personal collection, particularly of 16th and 17th century masters. At his trial, the magistrate quoted him as saying, "I enjoy art. I love such works of art. I collected them and kept them at home."

Despite the immensity of his collection, he was still able to recall every piece he stole. He interrupted the lengthy reading of his collection during his trial several times to correct various details.

A witness who recanted the bribery charge against the Ampatuans and several officials and prosecutors of the Department of Justice (DOJ) has accused Justice Secretary Leila de Lima of receiving P5 million monthly from Maguindanao Gov. Esmael “Toto” Mangudadatu.
The accusation was contained in a four-page affidavit filed yesterday by Jerramy Joson before the DOJ.

De Lima denied the allegation.

“Rubbish! That woman has done so much harm to the institution,” she told reporters.

De Lima said she has ordered an investigation on Joson.

Joson filed charges of serious illegal detention against Mangudadatu, his brother and Maguindanao 2nd district Rep. People who all of a sudden become celebrities seem to have it good. One day no one knows who they are and the next they are getting paid millions of dollars for their first CD or movie or whatever they are famous for. But they didn’t develop that talent overnight. Most stars work hard and train for years before their noticed and become celebrities. Their success may seem to come overnight, but it’s just the manifestation of all their hard work they’ve been doing for years. And what if you start a business that booms seemingly overnight and makes tons of money? Again, you have to have the character to take care of that money in case your business sees dry times in the future. Remember when all the house flippers and real estate tycoons were making mass money? Business isn’t so great at this point. They may have gotten rich quick, but they could very well be poor now.

So if you ever find yourself wishing you could make a lot of money in a little time, remember that it doesn’t happen fast and that it takes work. Even if money were to come easy, it takes work to handle that money. There’s no escaping that fact. If you haven’t fallen into a large sum of money recently, then keep building your character and your ability to handle the money you do have and if perhaps someday you do end up with a large sum of money, you will be able to keep it and handle it well.

A wealth windfall: OK, so what if you win the lottery, or inherit a bunch of money, or become a celebrity, or start a business that makes a ton of money off the bat? If that happens then you would get rich quick, right? Wrong. If you all of a sudden fall into a large sum of money you still have to take care of that money or else you will spend it all and it will be gone before you know it. In order to be the kind of person who is wise with their money and disciplined to not blow it all immediately, you have to have a certain amount of character that takes time to build. So if you come into a large sum of money and actually keep it and make it work for you, you’re still not rich quick because you’ve spent many years building the character to handle that large sum of money.

If you could “get rich quick” there would be a lot more “rich” people: It takes work and discipline to build wealth and take care of your money and this is something most people aren’t willing to do. If it were easy, then a lot more people would do it. It’s the same thing with weight loss pills. If they really worked and helped you lose weight without diet and exercise, then why are so many people in America still overweight? It’s because it’s all empty promises and they don’t work. Why is it that people making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year can be the deepest in debt? I’ve seen and read about people like this who are hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, yet they make 10 times the amount I make for a salary. It just shows you that it’s not about having the money â€" it’s about what you do with it.

“Rich” is relative: This isn’t the whole basis of my point, but it is a large part. What does “rich” really mean? The poorest person in America is probably considered rich to someone living in a 3rd world nation with no roof over their head and no clean water. For fun, I actually looked up the definition of the word “rich.” It is defined as “having wealth or great possessions; abundantly supplied with resources, means, or funds; wealthy.” Let’s just say for the sake of discussion that we are talking about being rich as having more than enough money to meet your needs and many of your desires. We can also call it financially secure or set. There is no such number we can put on this, but I think most would agree that being rich would mean not worrying about how much money you have or worrying about affording things.

It’s Impossible to “Get Rich Quick”
http://www.savingadvice.com/
By Cortni Marrazzo

You’ve seen them advertised, you had friends participate in them and maybe even you’ve been sucked in yourself: Get Rich Quick Schemes. If you buy this book about how to invest in real estate, you’ll be rich! If you join this multi-level marketing program you can quit your day job and have more than enough money! Sound too good to be true? It’s because it is. No matter what new thing you hear about or new venture you try, it is impossible to “get rich quick.”

Some may argue with me that people can fall into a very large sum of money in a short amount of time and I’ll address that further down, but even in these cases, people don’t get rich quick. Here are a few of my thoughts on this subject.

CHANGSHA, China, April 6 (UPI) -- A philandering Chinese man who secretly had 17 girlfriends was exposed when all of his paramours arrived at the same time to visit him in the hospital.
The Changsha man, identified by the surname Yuan, was hospitalized March 24 with non-life-threatening injuries from a car accident and doctors got into contact with a number of people they believed to be family members.

However, the 17 people who turned up at the hospital were revealed to be Yuan's girlfriends, who were unaware of each others' existence until they all arrived at the hospital at the same time.

A girlfriend who identified herself as Xiao Li said she has spoken with several of the other women and discovered many of them had been regularly giving him money. She said one of the women had been supporting him financially for nine years.

Yuan, who also allegedly fabricated his education background to get a job with a large company, is facing a fraud charge after he allegedly bilked his ex-wife of more than $40,000.

Awkward meeting

The reality that he had been dating all the women for the same time, some of them for years, came to light when doctors contacted his loved ones after he had an accident last month.

"I was really worried when I heard that he was in hospital," Xiao Li, who had been seeing Mr Yuan for 18 months, told the local Xiaoxiang Chen Bao paper at the time.

"But when I started seeing more and more beautiful girls show up, I couldn't cry any more."

When the story of his multiple girlfriends first came to light, thousands of comments were posted on social media about Mr Yuan's exploits, some admiring his ability to "multi-task".

Chinese man 'with 17 girlfriends' arrested for fraud
http://www.bbc.com/

The women discovered each other when they rushed to hospital after Mr Yuan's accident
A Chinese man who was caught cheating on 17 girlfriends at once has been arrested for fraud.

The man from Hunan province made headlines last month when all 17 women discovered each other when they rushed to his hospital bedside.

The allegation of fraud relates to sums of money which he regularly took from the deceived women, according to the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

The women set up an online chat group called "revenge alliance", SCMP said.

It was on this chat group that they discovered he would ask some of his girlfriends for money every month, the paper said.

The man, identified only as Mr Yuan from the city of Changsha, in Hunan province, is reported to have had a child with one of the women and had been planning a wedding with another.

pyramid scheme, n.

A fraudulent moneymaking scheme in which early participants are paid out of money received from later recruits, with the final recruits putting money in and getting nothing back.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/pyramid+scheme
#8388
The eight passengers must each pay (or "gift") a sum (e.g., $5,000) to join the scheme. This sum (e.g., $40,000) goes to the captain who leaves, with everyone remaining moving up one tier. There are now two new captains so the group splits in two with each group requiring eight new passengers. A person who joins the scheme as a passenger will not see a return until they advance through the crew and co-pilot tiers and exit the scheme as a captain. Therefore, the participants in the bottom three tiers of the pyramid lose their money if the scheme collapses.

If a person is using this model as a scam, the confidence trickster would take the majority of the money. They would do this by filling in the first three tiers (with one, two, and four people) with phony names, ensuring they get the first seven payouts, at eight times the buy-in sum, without paying a single penny themselves. So if the buy-in were $5,000, they would receive $40,000, paid for by the first eight investors. They would continue to buy in underneath the real investors, and promote and prolong the scheme for as long as possible to allow them to skim even more from it before it collapses.

Although the "captain" is the person at the top of the tree, having received the payment from the eight paying passengers, once they leave the scheme they are able to re-enter the pyramid as a "passenger" and hopefully recruit enough to reach captain again, thereby earning a second payout. --Wiki

The "Eight-Ball" model

Many pyramids are more sophisticated than the simple model. These recognize that recruiting a large number of others into a scheme can be difficult so a seemingly simpler model is used. In this model each person must recruit two others, but the ease of achieving this is offset because the depth required to recoup any money also increases. The scheme requires a person to recruit two others, who must each recruit two others, who must each recruit two others.

The "eight-ball" model contains a total of fifteen members. Note that an arithmetic progression 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 15. The pyramid scheme in the picture in contrast is a geometric progression 1 + 2 + 4 + 8 = 15.

Prior instances of this scheme have been called the "Airplane Game" and the four tiers labelled as "captain", "co-pilot", "crew", and "passenger" to denote a person's level.

DEFINITION OF 'PYRAMID SCHEME'

An illegal investment scam based on a hierarchical setup. New recruits make up the base of the pyramid and provide the funding, or so-called returns, given to the earlier investors/recruits above them.

INVESTOPEDIA EXPLAINS 'PYRAMID SCHEME'

A pyramid scheme is initiated by an individual or a company that starts recruiting investors with an offer of guaranteed high returns. As the scheme begins, the earliest investors do receive a high rate of return, but these gains are paid for by new recruits and are not a return on any real investment.

From the day the scam is initiated, a pyramid scheme's liabilities exceed its assets. The only way it can generate wealth is by promising extraordinary returns to new recruits; the only way these returns can be paid is by getting additional investors. Invariably these schemes lose steam and the pyramid collapses.

Nearly 3,000 migrants have swum to shore or been rescued off Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand over the past week, with thousands more believed to be drifting on boats without food or water.

The three governments have sparked international outrage for driving away some of the migrant boats, who are believed to have been deserted by human trafficking rings after a Thai crackdown.

"It is not a crisis that can be solved by a single state. It's a collective responsibility," Bernard Kerblat, the country representative of the UNHCR, told AFP after meeting with de Lima.

President Benigno Aquino's spokesman also said the Philippines was open to helping the refugees.

"As the only predominantly Catholic nation in Southeast Asia, it is our duty to provide succour to those in need," presidential spokesman Herminio Coloma told AFP.

The Rohingya are a Muslim minority group in predominantly Buddhist Myanmar, where they have no legal rights, making them a target for human traffickers. Up to 1.3 million live in the western Rakhine state.

Malaysia and Thailand have called on Myanmar to stem the flow of the Rohingya but Myanmar has refused to take responsiblity, claiming the group is composed of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

Kerblat said the Philippines and Myanmar have been invited to attend a conference on the crisis to be hosted by Thailand on May 29, but both countries had yet to confirm their attendance.

Bangladesh, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Vietnam, Australia and the United States are among 15 other governments that are attending the meeting, he said, describing it as a "step in the right direction".

A Rohingya migrant crying as she sits with others in a boat drifting in Thai waters

The Philippines said Tuesday it was ready to help Rohingya and Bangladeshi boatpeople, as its Southeast Asian neighbours faced outrage for turning them away.

The Philippines is obliged to help the migrants, many of whom are fleeing persecution, because it is party to the 1951 United Nations convention on refugees, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima and foreign department spokesman Charles Jose both said.

"We have the commitment and the obligation to extend humanitarian assistance to these asylum seekers," Jose told ANC television, without giving details.

De Lima stressed that "saving lives" was paramount.

"I think humanitarian consideration should transcend any other consideration. First thing is the humanitarian concern, saving lives," de Lima said after meeting with the country representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
