Bizarre accident: Worker cooked to death at soup factory
May 20, 2009 by Fred Hosier
www.safetynewsalert.com

Do you have workers who clean in confined spaces? Here’s a cautionary tale for them.

A worker at a soup factory in Germany died after getting trapped inside a giant cauldron and cooking to death, according to the newspaper, Bild.

The man had climbed into the cauldron at the Eraso soup factory to clean it.

The cauldron’s lid suddenly closed while the man was still inside. It started to fill with steam as part of the disinfection process.

A doctor confirmed the man had been cooked to death.

Travel and Tours / Holy Week Destination: Siquijor
April 01, 2010, 04:02:11 PM

There are but only a handful places in the country where people get scared just by hearing its name. We hear stories about Balete Drive and Capiz where, they say, unearthly creatures roam the earth. And there also is such an island where stories of local black magic, voodoo and aswangs veer the tourists away from the real reason why the place is called the Mystic Island. But as I have learned by spending some time there myself, the “mystic” label of the place does not emanate from stories about the supernatural but from the almost undisturbed beauty of its rolling mountains and white sand beaches, so beautiful that new resort investors are just itching to develop. I am a living testimony to the real beauty and majesty of the island province of Siquijor. I visited Siquijor to regain some peace of mind and relaxation. I soon discovered, my search was an effortless task. Siquijor has its ways of making me succumb to its spell.

The island is accessible through the ports of Siquijor and Larena via fast ferries from three major destinations in the Visayas â€" Cebu, Dumaguete and Tagbilaran.

But getting there and staying for the weekend is not the problem --- leaving is. If you are coming in groups, it is advisable to rent vehicles for the duration of your stay. It will set you back P600-800 a day, excluding fuel and driver’s tip. But if you are seeking the Siquijor adventure alone or with a loved one, you could ride the habal-habal, a motorcycle that could accommodate three passengers, including the driver.

One of the most celebrated tourist attractions of Siquijor is not a place, but a man, who reaches the peak of his popularity during the Holy Week when locals search for talismans, gayumas and anting-antings. It is to people in his craft that Siquijor owes its mysterious reputation. Mang Juan, the area’s most prominent maker of these magical items, cooks his brewed concoctions like a quintessential warlock, the most of which are eventually made available for sale to ardent followers. He does not look anything like an anting-anting maker, coming from the impression of hermit-like men secluding themselves from the rest of the people. Mang Juan was extremely accommodating. I remember him sharing with us how he collects the ingredients for his recipes, a complicated task from what I heard. The only opportune time for ingredient shopping begins at dawn every Friday between Ash Wednesday until Good Friday. Preparation is equally tedious as Mang Juan is careful not to let any sunlight shine on his harvest until he cooks them. His anting-antings range from P500 to P1500, and although it would sound expensive for some, those who have purchased Mang Juan’s trinkets would have their own personal stories of their effectivity. Mang Juan is not difficult to find; he resides near Cantabon Cave, at Mount Bandilaan.

Bible Study / The Battle Between Carnival And Lent
April 01, 2010, 02:51:32 PM

Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The Battle between Carnival and Lent. 1559. Oil on panel. Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, Austria.

“The Battle Between Carnival and Lent” is one of Bruegel’s best portrayals of the most pervasive contrasts of his world. This three-day festival of frantic eating, drinking and carousing that preceded the forty days of Lent was one of a number of popular celebrations co-opted by the Church and made official as part of the pre-Lenten ritual. Carnival was a time of institutionalized disorder, “the world upside down,” a reversal of roles, a game. It offered the opportunity for a rich display of man at his most outrageous extremes of behavior. The fact that the church had to allow carnival or this popular feast in order to enforce Lent was a source of tension between the Church officials and the people.

Brueghel’s painting portrays swarming activities in which beggars mix with partygoers costumed as kings and rioters dance briskly amid cripples who can barely get about on crutches and callused nubs of what used to be knees. This work captures the feeling of the precarious balance between life and death. This panoramic bird’s-eye view is centered on a mock battleâ€"a traditional part of the festivitiesâ€"in which the piety of Lent was comically pitted against the revelry of carnival. At the center, a brightly dressed, grossly fat man representing carnival’s excesses is mounted on a huge beer barrel, ready to joust with Lent, a skinny creature dressed in mourning and seated on an uncomfortable prayer stool. Carnival holds a cooking spit garnished with rich holiday food, while Lent weakly holds out a baker’s paddle holding two herring. Behind the Carnival to the left and down the side streets, students will identify masked partygoers eating waffles, drinking beer and dancing merrily. In front of the Inn of the Blue Boat, comedians act out a farce called “The Ugly Bride” while a couple kisses in the window.

In contrast with the brawling left side of the picture, where begging cripples are completely ignored, the right side (lighter side) is filled with activities showing piety and charity. Dark-robed worshippers walk from the church, a fishwife does a thriving trade and wealthy burghers give charity.

Who ordered it?

I leave that to the believer.

In the end, its all a matter of faith. A leap of Faith.

Personal belief and opinion (or faith, whatever) then, not reason.

Science, is man's attempt in trying to understand the Supreme Intelligence of Divine Providence.

No matter how much we try to comprehend and understand, we will never fully understand.

Even the scientific method, itself, by basis of standard, cannot 100% proove anything.

Merely, only debate and abate in statistical terms in the strength of its confidence interval; in defending a said theory/hypothesis.

Or nullification of said hypothesis/ theorem.

Now, I can't even start to try to undertand this goobledygook.

What, for heaven's sake, is "debate and abate in statistical terms in the strength of its confidence interval"?

Being stung by a bee would have most people rushing to hospital, expect at one Beijing clinic where patients queue up to be pricked into good health.

Bee sting therapy, which involves placing live bees on a patient's body at certain pressure points, dates back over 3,000 years in China and was considered legal in 2007.

It is similar to acupuncture in that it uses bees stingers instead of needles and the same principles, but the bees' toxin, which doctors say is a natural medicine, is essential, making the treatment like an injection.

Doctors at the Kang Tai Bee Clinic, a traditional Chinese medical facility in northeast Beijing, say the therapy has proved effective in curing diseases such as rheumatism and arthritis, as well as a list of other ailments.

"The bee therapy has an obvious effect on patients with bone and joint diseases," said Wang Jing, a doctor at the clinic.

"This treatment relies mainly on the bees' poison, which can help blood circulation, reduce inflammation and ease pain."

The bees used for the treatment are a hybrid of species from Italy and the Gulf, and are kept on the clinic grounds. Their 0.3 mm-long stings, which contain about 0.3 mg of toxin, make them suitable for the therapy, doctors say.

Epektibo kuno ni nga treatment sa almoranas...

Questions on Yuchengco’s nomination as ambassador to Germany

www.ellentordesillas.com

Does the controversial appointment of businessman Alfonso Yuchengco as ambassador to Germany have to do with the expose’ of Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano in 2006, when he was still a member of the House of Representatives , about a secret bank account of the Arroyos in HypoVereins Bank ?

Or does it have to do with Fraport AG, a German company that partnered with Philippine International Air Terminals Co. Inc. (Piatco) in building the $350 million Terminal 3 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport? It must be recalled that the Supreme Court under Gloria Arroyo nullified the Piatco-Fraport contract because of anomalies.

These are just some of the questions that came up as we tried to find rhyme and reason for Arroyo’s appointment of 87-year old Yuchengco to Germany with only three months left in her administration.

Foreign Service officers were shocked and disgusted to learn about the letter of Gloria Arroyo to the Commission on Appointments coursed through the Office of Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo asking for the confirmation of her nomination to Yuchengco as ambassador.

The letter, which was received by the office of Romulo, only last week, was dated March 9, 2010, two days before the 60-day ban on presidential appointments before Election Day. Many suspect that the nomination was ante-dated.

The one most surprised about Yuchengco’s nomination was Delia Albert, the current ambassador to Germany. Basic courtesy requires that before one is replaced, she should be notified.

News reports said she was told about her removal from her post on the day she was given the award, by Arroyo herself, as “Most Outstanding Filipino Woman in Global Diplomacy.”

How can Yuchengco assume his post before June 30 when there is no scheduled convening of the Commission on Appointments ? Congress is now on recess and the will only meet after elections as national board of canvassers and to proclaim the winner in the presidential election.

In fact, in a Dec. 16, 2009 letter of Sen. Miriam Santiago, chair of the committee on foreign relations, to Arroyo, the number one item is on “No ‘midnight’ political appointment to the diplomatic service.”

Santiago said, “It appears that for each new appointment, the government will spend more or less P10 million for relocating both the incumbent and the successor. Ordinarily, this can’t be helped.

“But if there are only six months left of an incumbent president’s tenure, this would be unnecessary expense because the new president will likely make his own political appointments.”

This was the basis for the rejection of the nomination of Rep. Antonio Cuenco as ambassador to Italy.
This was six months ago. It is expected that Arroyo would be out of Malacañang in three months and two days.

Vicky Bataclan, president of the Union of Foreign Service Officers, said, “by operation of law, political ambassadors should be out of their country of assignments on or before June 30, 2010.”

Santiago also asked Arroyo that “No request for agrément should be issued by the DFA until after the nominee for ambassador has been confirmed by the Commission on Appointments.”

An agrément is the acceptance of the receiving state of the ambassador being sent by another state. Without an agreement, the ambassador could not present his credentials to the receiving head of state. Unless he has presented his credentials, he has no official personality in that country.

Bataclan said Yuchengco’s appointment is “void. There is no CA to confirm his nomination which is necessary to do the necessary steps to get his agrément from the German government.”

Another issue against Yuchengco is his age. At 87, the former ambassador to China (1986 to 1988), Japan (1995), and to the United Nations (2001) does not impress people as physically and mentally agile.

Although the age limit set by the Foreign Service Act has been grossly violated by Arroyo, it is still the law. Section 23 states,” All officers and employees of the Department who have reached the age of sixty-five (65) shall be compulsorily and automatically retired from Service. Provided, however, That all incumbent non-career chiefs of mission who are seventy (70) years old and above shall continue to hold office until June 30,1992 unless sooner removed by the appointing authority.”

Clearly, Yuchengco’s appointment defies law and reason. The question is, why did Arroyo even make it?
