Facts and Trivia / Your Last Word Is Mine!
April 24, 2010, 06:17:18 PM

This is a very simple game. All you have to do is make a sentence that starts with the last word of the post immediately preceding. Somewhere along the way, pwede nga mo-switch ta sa Binisaya, and back again, unja balik na pud...

Example:

Post 1: I am very happy today.
Post 2: Today is the first day of the rest of your life.
Post 3: Life is what you make it, ingon ni Inday.
Post 4: Inday, gahi na sab ang baligya mong chicharon...etc., ugbp...

OK? I'll start:

After making this post, I'm going out to take a walk.

Sun.Star Cebu, Thursday, April 15, 2010

GERALDINE Gella, 27, sent off at the airport last Tuesday night an American man who used to be her boyfriend. About six hours later, she strangled his current girlfriend.

Gella told police investigators it was self-defense.

She tried to cover her tracks by stuffing the victim, Marylyn Zacal, 22, inside a suitcase and dumping the body in a grassy lot in Talisay City.

But her brother, who refused to help her get rid of the body, called the police while she was away.

When the single mon returned to her home in Barangay Buaya, Lapu-Lapu City, a police team was waiting.

Homicide investigator SPO1 Rolito Jumao-as hasn’t ruled out the possibility the attack was planned.

“Siya mao’y akong nakita nga dunay motibo sa pagpatay (She seems to have a motive for attacking),” he said.

Police have yet to decide whether to file a case for obstruction of justice against taxi driver Jay Blanco, who picked up Gella in Lapu-Lapu, placed her heavy suitcase inside the car and drove her to Talisay City.

Blanco said he had no idea the bag contained a dead womanâ€"until Gella asked her to dump its contents.

“Oy, tawo man lagi na, day,” Blanco recalled his reaction.

Zacal’s older sister Mary Joy said in a televised report that she is convinced the killing was premeditated, because the suspect was jealous.

She said she told Marylyn not to see Zacal, who called her up invited her to go out Tuesday night.

“Akong gibadlong akong manghod kay dili ko mosugot nga magkita sila pero akong manghod ang wala magpapugong ka’y amiga ra kuno sila (I told her I wouldn’t let her see Zacal but she insisted. She said they were friends),” she said.

Gella sent off her ex-boyfriend Mark Mosley, 48, at the Mactan airport where he had a 9 p.m. flight last Tuesday.

In an interview, Gella said she and Mosley broke up two years ago because of Zacal, but that she and the new girlfriend stayed friends.

She called up Zacal and invited her to go out dancing. They meet at a bar in Lahug, where they drank some tequila and Tanduay rum.

Gella said she brought Zacal to her house in Buaya because the latter wanted to see what appliances the American national had bought for her.

Gella, who hails from Tabango, Leyte, said she told Zacal she received P16,000 to P20,000 a month from Mosley. Zacal reportedly said she received only P4,000 to P6,000.

Zacal, according to Gella, clenched her fists and tried to grab her hair twice. They grappled until Zacal fell on the bed. That’s when, Gella said, she grabbed an electrical cord and tied it around Zacal’s neck.

“Wala na siya makasukol nako kay iyang usang kamot nadat-ugan man sa unlan og ang usa natabonan sa habol (She couldn’t fight back because one of her hands was under a pillow, while the other was under a blanket),” said Gella.

But PO2 Epifanio Comedido, a homicide investigator with the Talisay City police, said the victim had no other bruises or marks except for those on her neck.

There were no signs of a fight. He said Zacal, who was bigger and taller than Gella, could have been killed in her sleep.

A man and a friend are playing golf one day at their local golf course.
One of the guys is about to chip onto the green when he sees a long funeral
procession on the road next to the course.
He stops in mid-swing, takes off his golf cap, closes his eyes, and bows down in prayer.

His friend says: "Wow, that is the most thoughtful and touching thing I have ever seen.
You truly are a kind man."

The man then replies: "Yeah, well, we were married 35 years."

(philstar.com) Updated April 21, 2010 07:00 PM

As a policy, the Philippine government does not negotiate nor pay ransom to kidnappers, but gives ship owners the free hand in negotiating for the release of abducted Filipino sailors.

Quote from: JellyBean on April 24, 2010, 04:33:24 AM

And just why is it that Philippines does not pay ransom for their own? Instead they depend on a wealthy foreign ship owner...

Refusal to pay ransom is a policy adopted by most governments. The United States is the leading proponent of this policy.

U.S. Counterterrorism Policy
www.iwar.org.uk

First, make no concessions to terrorists and strike no deals;
Second, bring terrorists to justice for their crimes;
Third, isolate and apply pressure on states that sponsor terrorism to force them to change their behavior; and
Fourth, bolster the counterterrorism capabilities of those countries that work with the U.S. and require assistance.

The United States Government will make no concessions to terrorists holding official or private U.S. citizens hostage. It will not pay ransom, release prisoners, change its policies, or agree to other acts that might encourage additional terrorism. At the same time, the United States will use every appropriate resource to gain the safe return of American citizens who are held hostage by terrorists. Hostage-taking is defined under international law (International Convention Against the Taking of Hostages, adopted December 17, 1979) as the seizing or detaining and threatening to kill, injure, or continue to detain a person in order to compel a third party to do or abstain from doing any act as an explicit or implicit condition for the release of the seized or detained person.

It is internationally accepted that governments are responsible for the safety and welfare of persons within their borders. Aware of both the terrorist threat and public safety shortcomings in many parts of the world, the United States has developed enhanced physical and personal security programs for U.S. personnel and has established cooperative arrangements with the U.S. private sector. It also has established bilateral counter-terrorism assistance programs and close intelligence and law enforcement relationships with many nations to help prevent terrorist incidents or to resolve them in a manner that will deny the perpetrators benefits from their actions.

The United States also seeks effective judicial prosecution and punishment for terrorists and criminals victimizing the United States Government or its citizens and will use all legal methods to these ends, including extradition. U.S. policy and goals are clear, and the United States Government actively pursues them alone and in cooperation with other governments.

The United States Government believes that paying ransom or making other concessions to terrorists in exchange for the release of hostages increases the danger that others will be taken. Its policy therefore rejects all demands for ransom, prisoner exchanges, and deals with terrorists in exchange for the release of hostages. At the same time, it will make every effort, including contact with representatives of the captors, to obtain the release of the hostages.

The United States strongly urges American companies and private citizens not to pay ransom. It believes that good security practices, relatively modest security expenditures, and continual close cooperation with embassy and local authorities can lower the risk to Americans living in high-threat environments.

The United States Government is concerned for the welfare of its citizens but cannot support requests that host governments violate their own laws or abdicate their normal law enforcement responsibilities. On the other hand, if the employing organization or company works closely with local authorities and follows U.S. policy, U.S. Foreign Service posts can actively pursue efforts to bring the incident to a safe conclusion. This includes providing reasonable administrative services and, if desired by the local authorities and the American organization, full participation in strategy sessions. Requests for United States Government technical assistance or expertise will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The full extent of United States Government participation must await an analysis of each specific set of circumstances.

If a U.S. private organization or company seeks release of hostages by paying ransom or pressuring the host government for political concessions, U.S. Foreign Service posts will limit their participation to basic administrative services, such as facilitating contacts with host government officials. The host government and the U.S. private organization or citizen must understand that if they wish to follow a hostage resolution path different from that of United States Government policy, they do so without its approval or cooperation. The United States Government cannot participate in developing and implementing a ransom strategy. However, U.S. Foreign Service posts may maintain a discreet contact with the parties to keep abreast of developments.

Under current U.S. law 18 USC 1203 (Act for the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Hostage-Taking, enacted October 1984 in implementation of the U.N. Convention on Hostage-Taking), seizure of a U.S. national as a hostage anywhere in the world is a crime, as is any hostage-taking action in which the United States Government is a target or the hostage-taker is a U.S. national. Such acts, therefore, are subject to investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and to prosecution by U.S. authorities. Actions by private persons or entities that have the effect of aiding and abetting the hostage-taking, concealing knowledge of it from the authorities, or obstructing its investigation, may themselves be in violation of U.S. law.

Source: Office of the Coordinator for Counterterrorism, U.S. Department of State.

It may be noted that Britain, which has a history of allowing the payment of ransom, has recently thought to reconsider the established view. The issues involved are money laundering and the finance of terrorism. While piracy is strictly defined as being undertaken for personal gain (while terrorrism has a political or public motivation), money acquired by pirates can conceivably pass into the hands of terrorists.

Why should I learn a language?
www.omniglot.com

Learning a foreign language takes time and dedication. The reasons below may help to convince you to take the plunge, if such persuasion is needed. Some reasons are practical, some aspirational, some intellectual and others sentimental, but whatever your reasons, having a clear idea of why you're learning a language can help to motivate you in your studies.

Kolik jazyků znáš, tolikrát jsi člověkem.
You live a new life for every new language you speak.
If you know only one language, you live only once.
(Czech proverb)

Emigration

When you move to a different country or region, learning the local language will help you to communicate and integrate with the local community. Even if many of the locals speak your language, for example if your L1 is English and you move to the Netherlands, it's still worth your while learning the local language. Doing so will demonstrate your interest in and commitment to the new country.

Family and friends

If your partner, in-laws, relatives or friends speak a different language, learning that language will help you to communicate with them. It will also give you a better understanding of their culture and way of thinking.

Work

If your work involves regular contact with speakers of foreign languages, being able to talk to them in their own languages will help you to communicate with them. It may also help you to make sales and to negotiate and secure contracts. Knowledge of foreign languages may also increase your chances of finding a new job, getting a promotion or a transfer overseas, or of going on foreign business trips.

Many English-speaking business people don't bother to learn other languages because they believe that most of the people they do business with in foreign countries can speak English, and if they don't speak English, interpreters can be used. The lack of foreign language knowledge puts the English speakers at a disadvantage. In meetings, for example, the people on the other side can discuss things amongst themselves in their own language without the English speakers understanding, and using interpreters slows everything down. In any socialising after the meetings, the locals will probably feel more comfortable using their own language rather than English.

Study or research

You may find that information about subjects you're interested in is published mainly in a foreign language. Learning that language will give you access to the material and enable you to communicate with fellow students and researchers in the field.

Language is the archives of history.
(Ralph Waldo Emerson)

Travel

Many English speakers seem to believe that wherever you go on holiday you can get by speaking English, so there's no point in learning any other languages. If people don't understand you all you have to do is speak slowly and turn up the volume. You can more or less get away with this, as long as you stick to popular tourist resorts and hotels where you can usually find someone who speaks English. However, if you want to venture beyond such places, to get to know the locals, to read signs, menus, etc, knowing the local language is necessary.

A basic ability in a foreign language will help you to 'get by', i.e. to order food and drink, find your way around, buy tickets, etc. If you have a more advanced knowledge of the language, you can have real conversations with the people you meet, which can be very interesting and will add a new dimension to your holiday.

Die Grenzen meiner Sprache bedeuten die Grenzen meiner Welt.
The limits of my language are the limits of my universe.
(Ludwig Wittgenstein)

Studying abroad

If you plan to study at a foreign university, college or school, you'll need a good knowledge of the local language, unless the course you want to study is taught through the medium of your L1. Your institution will probably provide preparatory courses to improve your language skills and continuing support throughout your main course.

Secret communication

If you and some of your relatives, friends or colleagues speak a language that few people understand, you can talk freely in public without fear of anyone eavesdropping, and/or you can keep any written material secret. Speakers of such Native American languages as Navajo, Choctaw and Cheyenne served as radio operators, know as Code Talkers, to keep communications secret during both World Wars. Welsh speakers played a similar role during the Bosnian War.

Required course

You may be required to study a particular language at school, college or university.

Getting in touch with your roots

If your family spoke a particular language in the past you might want to learn it and possibly teach it to your children. It could also be useful if you are research your family tree and some of the documents you find are written in a language foreign to you.

Revitalising or reviving your language

If you speak an endangered language, or your parents or grandparents do/did, learning that language and passing it on to your children could help to revitalise or revive it.

Culture

Maybe you're interested in the literature, poetry, films, TV programs, music or some other aspect of the culture of people who speak a particular language and want to learn their language in order to gain a better understanding of their culture.

Most people in the world are multilingual, and everybody could be; no one is rigorously excluded from another's language community except through lack of time and effort. Different languages protect and nourish the growth of different cultures, where different pathways of human knowledge can be discovered. They certainly make life richer for those who know more than one of them.
(Nicholas Ostler, Empires of the Word)

Religion

Missionaries and other religious types learn languages in order to spread their message. In fact, missionairies have played a major role in documenting languages and devising writing systems for many of them. Others learn the language(s) in which the scriptures/holy books of their religion were originally written to gain a better understanding of them. For example, Christians might learn Hebrew, Aramaic and Biblical Greek; Muslims might learn Classical Arabic, and Buddhists might learn Sanskrit.

Food

Perhaps you enjoy the food and/or drink of a particular country or region and make regular trips there, or the recipe books you want to use are only available in a foreign language.

Linguistic interest

Maybe you're interested in linguistic aspects of a particular language and decide to learn it in order to understand them better.

Challenging yourself

Maybe you enjoy the challenge of learning foreign languages or of learning a particularly difficult language.

Sounds/looks good to me

Perhaps you just like the sound of a particular language when it's spoken or sung. Or you find the written form of a language attractive. If you like singing, learning songs in other languages can be interesting, challenging and enjoyable.

One language is never enough!

If like me you're a bit of a linguaphile / glossophile / linguaholic or whatever you call someone who is fascinated by languages and enjoys learning them, then one language is never enough.

If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head.
If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.
(Nelson Mandela)

General Topic / Tsunami Safety Tips

A tsunami is a series of waves that may be dangerous and destructive. When you hear a tsunami warning, move at once to higher ground and stay there until local authorities say it is safe to return home.

BEFORE

Find out if your home is in a danger area. Know the height of your street above sea level and the distance of your street from the coast. Evacuation orders may be based on these numbers.

Be familiar with the tsunami warning signs. Because tsunamis can be caused by an underwater disturbance or an earthquake, people living along the coast should consider an earthquake or a sizable ground rumbling as a warning signal. A noticeable rapid rise or fall in coastal waters is also a sign that a tsunami is approaching.

Make sure all family members know how to respond to a tsunami.

Make evacuation plans. Pick an inland location that is elevated. After an earthquake or other natural disaster, roads in and out of the vicinity may be blocked, so pick more than one evacuation route.

Teach family members how and when to turn off gas, electricity, and water.

Teach children how and when to call 9-1-1, police or fire department, and which radio station to listen for official information.

TSUNAMI FACTS

Tsunamis that strike coastal location in the Pacific Ocean Basin are most always caused by earthquakes. These earthquakes might occur far away or near where you live.

Some tsunamis can be very large. In coastal areas their height can be as great as 30 feet or more (100 feet in extreme cases), and they can move inland several hundred feet.

All low lying coastal areas can be struck by tsunamis. A tsunami consists of a series of waves. Often the first wave may not be the largest. The danger from a tsunami can last for several hours after the arrival of the first wave.

Tsunamis can move faster than a person can run.

Sometimes a tsunami causes the water near shore to recede, exposing the ocean floor. The force of some tsunamis is enormous. Large rocks weighing several tons along with boats and other debris can be moved inland hundreds of feet by the tsunami wave activity. Homes and other buildings are destroyed.

All this material and water move with great force and can kill or injure people.

Tsunamis can occur at any time, day or night.

Tsunamis can travel up rivers and streams that lead to the ocean.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

Be aware of tsunami facts. This knowledge could save your life! Share this knowledge with your relatives and friends. It could save their lives!

If you are in school and you hear there is a tsunami warning, you should follow the advice of teachers and other school personnel. If you are at home and hear there is a tsunami warning, you should make sure you entire family is aware of the warning. Your family should evacuate your house if you live in a tsunami evacuation. Move in an orderly, calm and safe manner to the evacuation site or to any safe place outside your evacuation zone. Follow the advice of local emergency and law enforcement authorities.

If you are at the beach or near the ocean and you feel the earth shake, move immediately to higher ground. DO NOT wait for a tsunami warning to be announced. Stay away from rivers and streams that lead to the ocean as you would stay away from the beach and ocean if there is a tsunami. A regional tsunami from a local earthquake could strike some areas before a tsunami warning could be announced. Tsunamis generated in distant locations will generally give people enough time to move to higher ground. For locally generated tsunamis, where you might feel the ground shake, you may only have a few minutes to move to higher ground.

High, multi-story, reinforced concrete hotels are located in many low-lying coastal areas. The upper floors of these hotels can provide a safe place to find refuge should there be a tsunami warning and you cannot move quickly inland to higher ground. Local Civil Defense procedures may, however, not allow this type of evacuation in your area. Homes and small buildings located in low lying coastal areas are not designed to withstand tsunami impacts. Do not stay in these structures should there be a tsunami warning.

Offshore reefs and shallow areas may help break the force of tsunami waves, but large and dangerous waves can still be threat to coastal residents in these areas. Staying away fro all low-lying coastal areas is the safest advice when there is a tsunami warning.

I didn't marry you because you were perfect. I didn't even marry you because I loved you. I married you because you gave me a promise. That promise made up for your faults. And the promise I gave you made up for mine. Two imperfect people got married and it was the promise that made the marriage. And when our children were growing up, it wasn't a house that protected them; and it wasn't our love that protected them - it was that promise.

What's the Appropriate Level of Water Consumption?

A good rule to follow is to drink half your weight in 'ounces' of water every day. So, if you weigh 160 pounds, you would benefit by drinking 80 ounces of water each day.

Examples: 200 lbs=100 ounces of water daily
100 lbs=50 ounces of water daily

You can also get some water in fruit juices, teas, sparkling water and sodas, but each of them have distinct disadvantages. For instance, when you drink any juices, you are requiring your digestive machinery and the pancreas to fire up and work. Drinking pure water allows your body to flush out toxins without having to mobilize and put stress on your digestive system. Caffeinated teas are actually a diuretic. By drinking caffeinated teas, coffee, colas, and chocolate drinks, you are actually depleting the supply of water available in your body to dilute toxins and moisturize your system. Herbal teas often have therapeutic effects, but they can also make your body work, instead of giving it a well-deserved and needed rest. Some herbal teas are also diuretic in action. Having caffeinated drinks and herbal teas are fine, so long as it's in moderation, but the bulk of our daily liquids should be pure water.

Adequate water consumption is one of the single most important tasks we must practice daily in order to live a long and healthy life.

Between the 1850s and the beginning of the Second World War male chastity devices were developed for the purpose of preventing masturbation which the Victorian’s believed was a cause of insanity.   It is at this point where we can see a distinct difference between male and female chastity belts/devices.

The Victorian view of the female chastity belt was to protect the wearer from rape, and was therefore considered as a method of security. However, male chastity belts and devices were developed to prevent "self abuse", “self pollution”, "nocturnal emissions" and "insanity, imbecility and feeblemindedness" which were considered to be the natural fate of any young man with lax moral attitudes!
