Top gainers included tuna (294.4%), bananas (101.9%), petroleum products (43.5%), metal components (40.7%), and coconut oil (5.6%).

PHILIPPINES EXPORTS continue climb in October despite electronics' subdued growth, buoyed by gains in other commodities, data from the National Statistics Office (NSO) showed.

Outbound shipments stood at $4.41 billion, up 6.1% from the $4.16 billion recorded a year earlier. Month-on-month, however, exports contracted by 7.9% from $4.78 billion in September.

The October result brought aggregate merchandise exports for the year to $44.47 billion, up by 7.1% from last year's $41.53 billion but still short of the government's revised 8% full-year target.

Electronics, the country's top export with a 43.1% share of total revenues, eked out muted gains. Export sales totaled $1.90 billion, up by 0.3% and trimming its total year-to-date loss to 6.56%, NSO data showed.

Faster upticks were seen in woodcraft and furniture, which grew by 14.3% to $237.25 million; and cathodes and sections of cathodes, which grew by 44.8% to $149.63 million.

Top gainers included tuna (294.4%), bananas (101.9%), petroleum products (43.5%), metal components (40.7%), and coconut oil (5.6%).

Japan emerged as the country's top export destination in October with revenues reaching $730.71 million, followed by Hong Kong with $646.93 million. East Asia was the biggest bloc for Philippine exports, accounting for 55.3% of total exports at $2.44 billion in October. (http://is.gd/buvdgb)

Last week's deadly typhoon in the impoverished southern portion of the Philippines obscured what has been a year of remarkable achievement for the island nation. Pushed by a surge in consumption, the Philippine economy expanded at a 7.1% year-over-year pace in the third quarter, second only to the 7.4% growth of Asia's perennial leader, China.

The storm delivered a devastating human tragedy, with more than 500 deaths reported by Friday, but it won't have more than a small temporary economic effect because it was mostly confined to rural areas. Manila should quickly regain its recent stride under President Benigno Aquino III. The country's central bank has been able to cut its benchmark interest rate four times in the past 12 months to a record-low 3.5% since inflation is running below 3%. Budget deficits have been reined in. And the Aquino administration is now readying a boost in infrastructure spending, a program likely to get added backing following the storm. The government already has ambitious plans to improve air, rail, and road "connectivity," says Hak-Bin Chua, an economist for Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Singapore. "The Philippines is the turnaround story in Asia," he says.

Investors have taken note. The Philippines' main stock-market index is up 32% this year. "It has been a great year," says Alfred Dy, head of research for CLSA in Manila. Mostly off the radar of foreign investors, the volatile index is up nearly sixfold over the past decade. Only the Indonesian market's tenfold gain in that time has done better in Asia.

Can the gains continue? Yes. With its young, growing population, the Philippines should enjoy a demographic dividend that aging Asian societies like Japan, Korea, and Taiwan won't. The nation will have the region's fastest-growing labor force over the next decade, with more than a 30% rise in its work force. "That's very positive for sectors like consumer, banking, and infrastructure," says Alex Pomento, head of research at Macquarie Securities in Manila. Dy estimates remittances back home from the many Filipinos working abroad will rise about 5% next year.

The archipelago has other advantages. Corporate debt-to-equity ratios have dropped from 1.5 times 12 years ago to 0.6 times, giving the private sector more flexibility and resilience. Projected loan growth of 15% next year and further monetary easing will push growth. The country's booming business process outsourcing is expected to generate $17.5 billion next year, a rise of 25%.

Caution is urged on certain stocks. Blue chips like beer-to-utilities conglomerate San Miguel Corp. and banking- and property-based Ayala Land Inc., favorites of overseas investors, look fully valued at over 20 times this year's earnings. That's a big premium over the Philippine market.

More reasonable, says Dy, are conglomerates Metro Pacific Investments Corp., and JG Summit. Metro Pacific focuses on property and infrastructure and trades at 13.6 times next year's earnings. Dy has a 5.7-peso (14 US cents) price target, or 26% upside. JG Summit has broad exposure to the consumer sector through property, hotels, packaged food, and telecom as well as a low-cost airline. Dy has a 41-peso price target on JG Summit, which trades at 13 times next year's earnings.

Arguably the best play for US investors is the $150 million in assets iShares MSCI Philippines Investable Market Index Fund (EPHE), which has risen 47.7% this year. It could just be getting started.

US allows entry of 3,000 metric ton of local bananas

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has effectively given its go-signal to the export of 3,000 metric tons of cavendish bananas to continental United States by December 2012.

"The workplan [for the export of bananas to the US] has been approved. US Ambassador [to the Philippines] Harry K. Thomas Jr. has expressed satisfaction [with our] preparations when he visited the Dole Philippines plant a few weeks ago," Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) Director Clarito M. Barron said in an interview on Monday. The plant is located in Bukidnon province, in the country's southern Mindanao region.

According to Barron, the USDA's approval is welcome news for banana farmers who had to contend with lower shipments caused by a decision of China to subject Philippine bananas to more stringent sanitary and phytosanitary requirements.

Earlier this year, China impounded bananas from the Philippines purportedly due to the presence of scale insects in shipments.

The world economic giant is the second-biggest market for Philippine bananas, next to Japan. Banana exports to China reached 358,000 metric tons (MT) worth â,±4.75 billion in 2011.

In August the BPI declared that China had started to ease its restrictions on Philippine bananas. As of August 14, the Chinese quarantine office allowed the entry of 17,787 container vans equivalent to 356,092 metric ton of bananas valued at $71 million USD.

Despite this breakthrough, the private-sector led group of the Philippine Banana Growers and Exporters Association continues to conduct trade missions to the Middle East, Russia and Europe to promote Philippine bananas and develop new markets for its members' produce.

The BPI said the US government is reviewing the final work plan also for the export of cavendish bananas to US trust territories, which include Guam, the Marianas Islands and Palau.

With the opening of its market to local bananas, the US expects the Philippines to allow increased market access to its temperate vegetables.

Despite the restrictions imposed by China, banana exportation to china unstoppable - the National Statistics Office said in a recent report that the value of banana exports in January-August 2012 went up by 20.16 percent year-on-year to $309.16 million.

Begin with the Sign of the Cross

Introductory Prayer: Dearest God our Father, I humbly ask that on my journey home to you, Your Holy Angels protect and guide me; that your Blessed Saints in Heaven intercede for me, and that your Suffering Souls in Purgatory pray for me, as I pray for them now. Amen.

Pray 1 Hail Mary

Jesus, my God and my Savior, You loved me so much, You died for me on the Cross, so that I, too, could return to our Father in Heaven. You are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Through Your Holy Eucharist, please sustain me and be present with me on my journey home to You. Amen.

Holy Spirit, my God and my Sanctifier, Jesus sent you to me for my journey back home to the Father. Please purify and refine me. Fill me with your Divine Light and Love so that the Presence of God may dwell with me and in me. Amen.

For having wanted to be wanted. It confuses you, because you think that your feelings were wrong and it makes you feel so small because it's so hard to keep it inside when you let it out and it doesn't coma back. Answer:

By Fr. Vincent Serpa O.P.

Accepting sinful behavior in other people does them no good. Pointing out the sinfulness is not rejecting them: It’s rejecting what is evil. We owe each other the truth. Because some people with same-sex attractions feel that they were born with such inclination doesn’t make it so. There is no proof for such an assumption. Such people assume they are born homosexual because they can’t remember ever feeling any other way. What we do know is that for whatever reason these people have not identified with the parent of their sex. The prevailing spin that our culture puts on this dynamic is that the culture must adapt to the needs these people perceive they haveâ€"to live as though the behavior that such feelings suggest is good and ought to be the norm for them.

Our culture insists that everyone has a right to sexual gratification. Never mind about context; let pleasure be the guide.

The greatest fallacy in such a proposition is that if anyone suggests otherwise, he is passing judgment and rejecting such people outrightâ€"as when you ask how we can be more like Jesus and accept those who are rejected. Jesus never accepted sinful behavior. He did accept sinners who were repentant, and he always loved themâ€"even in their most sinful moments.

What is the context in which Jesus matters to us? What is the most important fact that we know about Jesus in relation to us? It is Good Friday! Good Friday is not only the day on which God revealed more about himself than at any other time in the history of creation, it is also our context as followers of Jesus. It is on the cross that Jesus shows us how to live. It is there that he shows us what constitutes love: sacrifice. "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me" (Mark 8:34).

That God would love his creatures enough to become one of them and then suffer and die for them is beyond our ability to comprehend fully. Yet to the degree that we can appreciate what it is to suffer, we can appreciate such love. Each of us is given the opportunity for gaining such appreciation through the crosses that he allows us to have. Many different crosses prevent people from engaging in normal married life and therefore, genital pleasure. Homosexuality is only one of these. Only when we look at our human situation in its proper context, the context of Good Friday, can we recognize our place in it. Only through accepting the cross of same-sex attraction and offering it up in response to his self-gift will such a person know the full embrace of his nail-scarred hands.

It is when we accept the cross in our lives and encourage others to carry theirs that we are more like Jesusâ€"not when we water down his expectations of us!

Answer:

Receiving Communion when in doubt as to whether or not you are in a state of grace is not the same thing as receiving Communion while in a state of mortal sin. If you sincerely are in doubt as to whether or not you are in a state of grace, then there is a possibility that you might be in a state of grace. If that is the case, then I cannot see any reason not to receive Communion, so long as the person goes to confession at the next reasonable opportunity to confess his sins and discuss his doubts with the confessor. This is particularly so for a scrupulous person who may struggle daily with certainty over whether or not he is in a state of grace.

Your friend’s desire to look into history to substantiate the truth of his faith is commendable. However, he has probably not read a single primary historical source to substantiate this claim of "Baptist successionism." Instead, he has probably gotten a hold of the booklet Trail of Blood by J.M. Carroll, which puts forth the ideas he passed on to you.

Let’s examine his claims about the sects that he mentions. He claims descent from the Anabaptists, Montanists, and Novations, but was their theology of a Baptist slant?

The Anabaptists baptized babies, and so can in no way be considered the spiritual ancestors to the present-day Baptists. Novations taught that those who had fallen from the faith should never be allowed to repent and return to the fold, since God cannot forgive their sin. The same council that defined the divinity of Christ (Nicea in A.D. 325) condemned the Novations. Montanists were a movement centering around the false prophet Montanus, who taught that the heavenly Jerusalem would soon descend upon his home town, the Phrygian village of Pepuza, and that, to prepare for the imminent coming of Christ, one must practice severe asceticism.

For a person to reject the Baptist successionist view is actually a compliment to the Baptists. In fact, years after having written Trail of Blood, Carroll wrote of himself,

QuoteExtensive graduate study and independent investigation of church history has, however, convinced [the author] that the view he once held so dear has not been, and cannot be, verified. On the contrary, surviving primary documents render the successionist view untenable. . . . Although free church groups in ancient and medieval times sometimes promoted doctrines and practices agreeable to modern Baptists, when judged by standards now acknowledged as baptistic, not one of them merits recognition as a Baptist church. Baptists arose in the 17th century in Holland and England. They are Protestants, heirs of the reformers. (Baptist Successionism: A Crucial Question in Baptist History [1994], 1â€"2)

Baptist professor and historian James Edward McGoldrick adds, "Perhaps no other body of professing Christians has had as much difficulty in discerning its historical roots as have the Baptists. A survey of conflicting opinions might lead a perceptive observer to conclude that Baptists suffer from an identity crisis" (Baptist Successionism, 1).

Encourage your friend to continue studying the history of Christianity by giving him the writings of the Church Fathers. As Newman said in his Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, "To be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant."

Were the Baptists part of the Protestant Reformation or does their history go back to the early Church?
#8147
Answer:

Let's call the first view sola-1 and the second sola-2. I don’t know how others handle this, but whenever I discuss sola scriptura, I try to throw in a qualifying adjective like decisive or binding to cover the “sola-2” view. Thus, I’ll say that sola scriptura is the view that “nothing besides Scripture has binding or decisive authority.” This makes it clear that it is the sola-2 view I’m talking about and avoids the charge of attacking a straw man.

Frankly, though, there is little difference between the arguments that succeed against sola-1 and sola-2. Advocates of sola-2 may sound at first like they have a more formidable view, and they often claim that they have a more “historic” view, but on the level of argument, all that is just packaging.

This becomes clear when one asks what kind of authority the church or the Fathers are supposed to have. It clearly isn’t binding or decisive authority. At most, in the Protestant view the teachings of Protestant churches and the Fathers could suggest beliefs and interpretations to one, but never bind one to believe them. Only the Bible can do that. Some Protestants might even go so far as to say that we owe church leaders, confessions, and Fathers some kind of deferential preferment, but they ultimately cannot tell one what to believe.

As long as that is the case, sola-2 is in agreement with sola-1 in placing church leaders, confessions, and Fathers on the same plane as commentaries, Bible dictionaries, and other study tools. They are things that can suggest but not require belief. The writings of Augustine may (or may not) be considered more prestigious as study tools than Unger’s Bible Handbook, but that’s all they are for Protestants: study tools. You are still left to make up your own mind on every point of theology.

As a result, the same arguments that work against sola-1 generally disprove sola-2 as well. Some Protestant apologists may try to dress up their sola scriptura in new clothes so they can boast of being more “historic” and start throwing around charges of straw men. But ultimately it’s the same thing, and the same arguments work against it.

No. There were no early councils that endorsed the 66 books Protestants honor (check the facts in your local library). The current canon of Scripture was affirmed at the Council of Rome in 382 under Pope Damasus, which included all and only the seventy-three books Catholics honor today. This canon was repeated at Hippo and at Carthage (A.D. 393 and 397, respectively) and has been repeated ever since.

It was Martin Luther who tossed out the seven books considered canonical since the beginning of Church history. He also rejected the epistle to the Hebrews and the book of Revelation. He also called the epistle of James "an epistle of straw" because James 2:14â€"26 conflicted with his personal theology on good works. He also added the word (in his German translation) only in Romans 3:20 and Romans 4:15, and he inserted the word alone in Romans 3:28.

Was Martin Luther's revision of the Bible a return to the "true Bible" of the early Church?
#8152
Answer

Bibles from that time period do exist today in museums. Even a second-century Latin translation of the Bible based on the Old Testament (Septuagint) and New Testament Greek has survived. The Catholic Encyclopedia calls this version the Vetus Itala (Old Latin), and says "Its New Testament is possessed complete in some thirty-eight manuscripts, but its Old Testament text has survived only in parts." Until Martin Luther the deuterocanonical books of the Bible were never omitted or put in a separate, non-canonical section of the Bible.

See the Catholic Encyclopedia entry "Versions of the Bible" at: www.newadvent.org.

The Theological Virtues:

Faith is the theological virtue by which one believes in God and all that He has revealed to us, by what He has said and through His Holy Church.

By faith, one must totally and freely commit their entire self to God.  Those with true faith prove this through works of charity.  Service and witnessing to Christ and to the One True Church are necessary for salvation.

Hope is the theological virtue in which we totally desire the Kingdom of Heaven and an eternal life of happiness with God.  We know that this will be our gift by loving, honoring and serving God.
Heaven is obtainable, not by our own strength, but by the help and grace of the Holy Spirit.  Hope keeps one from discouragement and sustains us during times of abandonment.  Buoyed up by hope, we are preserved from selfishness and led to happiness.

Christian hope begins with Jesus preaching the Beatitudes.  This is the weapon that protects us in the struggle for salvation.

Charity is the theological virtue by which we love God above all things for His sake, and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God.  Jesus makes charity the new commandment, the fullness of The Law.
It is the foundation of the other virtues.  It is the bond of perfection.  If I have not charity, I have nothing and I gain nothing.  With charity, I have life and inspiration.

There are four Cardinal Virtues:

1.Prudence
2.Justice
3.Fortitude
4.Temperance

Prudence is our ability to determine true good in every circumstance and to choose the right means of obtaining it.  Prudence is right reason in action.  It guides the judgment of conscience.  It guides the other virtues and gives us the ability to apply moral principles to achieve good and avoid evil.

Justice is the firm moral desire to give God and neighbor their just due.  Justice toward God is called the Virtue of Religion.  Justice toward men requires us to respect the rights of others and to establish relationships with them that promotes the common good.  The just person is distinguished by habitual right thinking and uprightness toward one's neighbor at all times.

As the Bible has says: Col 4:1 - "Masters, treat your slaves justly and fairly, knowing that you have a master in heaven."  This applies to all individuals in their treatment towards others.

Your place in eternity (Heaven/Purgatory or Hell) will be determined in how well you learn this virtue.

Fortitude is the moral virtue that gives one the inner strength and firmness in difficulties to continue the pursuit of the common good.
It gives us the strength to resist temptations and to over-come obstacles in one's moral life.  It enables one to conquer fear, even fear of death, and to face persecution.  It gives one the ability to sacrifice one's life in defending a just cause, as so many Saints and religious have done, which spreads the faith.

Temperance is the moral virtue that provides balance in the attraction of worldly goods and pleasures.  By control over one's instincts, you can keep desires within honorable limits.  A temperate person directs his desires, which come from the heart and not from earthly temptations, toward what is good.
To live well is nothing other than to love God with all one's heart and with all one's soul and with all one's effort.

Answer:

True Happiness Begins with Virtue.

The Virtues are the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven.  When we obtain the virtues through our own efforts and desires, we begin the process of becoming like God.
The Church has divided the virtues into two classifications:

1. The Human Virtues, which are called the Cardinal Virtues.
2. The Theological Virtues.

Where does true happiness begin?
#8161
Answer:

The corporal works of mercy are oriented toward the body:

                To feed the hungry
To give drink to the thirsty.
                To clothe the naked.
To visit and ransom the captives.
                To shelter the homeless.
                To visit the sick.
                To bury the dead.

The spiritual works of mercy are oriented toward the soul.
                To admonish sinners.
                To instruct the ignorant.
                To counsel the doubtful.
                To comfort the sorrowful.
                To bear wrongs patiently.
                To forgive all injuries.
To pray for the living and the dead.

I like him very much. I like his emphasis on Sound Doctrine. Like what Isles said, he is important now than ever because he reminds all of us of the importance of orthodoxy , especially now in this secular world we live in. The Good Lord chose him to be the Vicar of Christ for a reason.

Right now, I am thinking of my loved ones in the Philippines, and my family here in the United States. I am asking for continued abundant Graces and Blessings to pour down onto my loved ones, my family and my friends, those who are also at qualms with me, I pray for continued abundant Graces and Blessings for them. May God always bless them.

As the days come closer to Christmas, I am reminded of the significance of this day. The reverence we must have at each passing day towards the Day of Salvation. May we all take the time to discern and spend time in prayer -- as we look at the Blessings and Spiritual Graces that God has given us in our individual lives.

May God Bless all of you. May God continue to have mercy on you. Amen.

O most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Thou didst reveal to the blessed Margaret Mary Thy desire to rule over Christian families; behold, in order to please Thee, we stand before Thee this day, to proclaim Thy full sovereignty over our family. We desire henceforth to live Thy life, we desire that the virtues, to which Thou hast promised peace on earth, may flower in the bosom of our family; we desire to keep far from us the spirit of the world, which Thou hast condemned. Thou art King of our hearts by our love of Thee alone, with which our hearts are on fire and whose flame we shall nourish by frequent reception of the Holy Eucharist. Be pleased, O Sacred Heart, to preside over our gathering together, to bless our spiritual and temporal affairs, to ward off all annoyance from us, to bless our joys and comfort our sorrows. If any of us has ever been so unhappy as to fall into the misery of displeasing Thee, grant that he may remember, O Heart of Jesus, that Thou art full of goodness and mercy toward the repentant sinner. And when the hour of separation strikes and death enters our family circle, whether we go or whether we stay, we shall all bow meekly before Thine eternal decrees. This shall be our consolation, to remember that the day will come, when our entire family, once more united in heaven, shall be able to sing of Thy glory and Thy goodness forever. May the immaculate Heart of Mary and the glorious Patriarch Saint Joseph vouchsafe to offer Thee this our act of consecration, and to keep the memory thereof alive in us all the days of our lives.

Glory to the Heart of Jesus, our King and our Father! Amen.

1. "Hail Mary, full of grace!"
Immaculate Virgin, here I am at your feet once again,
full of devotion and gratitude.
I return to this historic Piazza di Spagna
on the solemn day of your feast
to pray for the beloved city of Rome,
for the Church, for the whole world.
In you, "humble and highest of creatures",
divine grace had the full victory over evil.
You are for us, pilgrims on the paths of the world,
the bright model of evangelical fidelity
and the ever-living pledge of sure hope.

2. Virgin Mother, "Salvation of the Roman People!"
Watch over, I pray you, the beloved Diocese of Rome:
over pastors and faithful, parishes and religious communities.
Watch over families especially:
may love sealed by the Sacrament ever reign between spouses,
may children walk on the paths of goodness and true freedom,
may the elderly feel surrounded by attention and affection.
Inspire, Mary, in so many young hearts,
generous replies to the "call for the mission",
a subject on which the diocese has
been reflecting over the years.
Thanks to an intense pastoral program for vocations,
may Rome be enriched by new young forces,
dedicated with enthusiasm to proclaiming the Gospel
in the city and in the world.

3. Blessed Virgin, Queen of Apostles!
Assist those who through study
and prayer are preparing to labor
on the many frontiers of the new evangelization.
Today I entrust to you, in a special way,
the community of the Pontifical Urban College,
whose historic headquarters are located in front of this pillar.
May this wonderful institution founded 375 years ago
by Pope Urban VIII for the formation of missionaries,
be able to continue effectively its ecclesial service.
May those it gathers, seminarians and priests,
men and women religious and laity,
be ready to put their energies at the disposition
of Christ in service of the Gospel to the far corners of the globe.

4. "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us!"
Pray, O Mother, for all of us.
Pray for humanity for those who suffers poverty and injustice,
violence and hatred, terror and war.
Help us to contemplate with the rosary
the mysteries of Him who "is our peace",
so that we will all feel involved
in a persevering dedication of service to peace.
Look with special attention
upon the land in which you gave birth to Jesus,
a land that you loved together with Him,
and that is still so sorely tried today.
Pray for us, Mother of hope!
"Give us days of peace, watch over our way.
Let us see your Son as we rejoice in heaven". Amen!

Prayer by Pope John Paul II on the Second Sunday of Advent, 8 December 2002 . Given at Piazza di Spagna
