Salamat sa Diyos nga ang mga kalidad sa Pinay, nailhan na! I met Pauline in Duesseldorf with her cousin (both from Cag de Oro City). She visited us. So I asked her what is she doing, she told me that she is a senior programmer in a british company based in Manila. Since there are some backlogs in the Rotterdam branch (Holland), she was asked to come.
Her collegues are all males and older then her. They are pleasantly surprised to see a lady, a Pinay in higher position, & educated in the Philippines.

Today begins the Novena to St Joseph!

Prayer to St. Joseph over 1900 years old

O St. Joseph whose protection is so great, so strong,  so prompt before the Throne of God,    I
place in you all my interests and desires. O St. Joseph do assist me by your powerful intercession and obtain for me from your Divine Son all spiritual blessings through Jesus Christ, Our Lord; so that having engaged here below your Heavenly power I may offer my Thanksgiving and Homage to the most Loving of Fathers.
O St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms. I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press him in my name and kiss His fine Head for me, and ask Him to return the Kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls, pray for us.
Amen

Say for nine consecutive mornings for anything you may desire. It has seldom been known to fail.
The tomb of St Joseph is not yet found. It has been said that his body remains intact. Our prayers to him will help us to find his body one day.

St. Dominic Savio

(1842-1857)

So many holy persons seem to die young. Among them was Dominic Savio, the patron of choirboys.
Born into a peasant family at Riva, Italy, young Dominic joined St. John Bosco as a student at the Oratory in Turin at the age of 12. He impressed John with his desire to be a priest and to help him in his work with neglected boys. A peacemaker and an organizer, young Dominic founded a group he called the Company of the Immaculate Conception which, besides being devotional, aided John Bosco with the boys and with manual work. All the members save one, Dominic, would in 1859 join John in the beginnings of his Salesian congregation. By that time, Dominic had been called home to heaven.

As a youth, Dominic spent hours rapt in prayer. His raptures he called "my distractions." Even in play, he said that at times "It seems heaven is opening just above me. I am afraid I may say or do something that will make the other boys laugh." Dominic would say, "I can't do big things. But I want all I do, even the smallest thing, to be for the greater glory of God."

Dominic's health, always frail, led to lung problems and he was sent home to recuperate. As was the custom of the day, he was bled in the thought that this would help, but it only worsened his condition. He died on March 9, 1857, after receiving the Last Sacraments. St. John Bosco himself wrote the account of his life.

Some thought that Dominic was too young to be considered a saint. St. Pius X declared that just the opposite was true, and went ahead with his cause. Dominic was canonized in 1954.

Toxic cabin air found in new plane study

“Scientists, former pilots and aviation pressure groups have accused the industry of knowing about the problem for decades and doing little to tackle it. But reports linking exposure to contaminated air with long-term harm to health have led to an increase in passengers and crew seeking redress, according to lawyers in the United States.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Samples taken secretly from the planes of popular airlines have raised fresh concerns over passengers inhaling contaminated air.

Fresh concerns about whether passengers could be inhaling contaminated air on aircraft have resurfaced, after undercover investigators claimed to have found high levels of a dangerous toxin on board several planes.

As part of an investigation by a German television network, ARD, and Schweizer Fernsehen (Swiss television), 31 swab samples were taken secretly last month from the aircraft cabins of popular airlines.

These were analysed in laboratories at the University of British Columbia, under the supervision of Prof Christian van Netten, a leading toxicologist.

Twenty-eight were found to contain high levels of tricresyl phosphate (TCP), an organophosphate contained in modern jet oil as an antiwear additive, which can lead to drowsiness, headaches, respiratory problems or neurological illnesses.

Scientists refer to the condition as Aerotoxic Syndrome. Dr Mackenzie Ross, a clinical neuropsychologist at University College London, says the illness may be affecting up to 200,000 passengers each year.

Scientists and pressure groups claim that the toxins enter the cabin as a result of the “bleed air” system that is used on modern aircraft.

Air is drawn out of the compression section of the engine and cooled. It then enters the cabin, where it mixes with recirculated air that has passed through filters designed to remove bacteria and viruses.

However, these “recirculated air” filters do not remove fumes or vapours from the engine. So if engine oil or hydraulic fuel leaks, toxic chemicals can contaminate the air supply.

Scientists, former pilots and aviation pressure groups have accused the industry of knowing about the problem for decades and doing little to tackle it. But reports linking exposure to contaminated air with long-term harm to health have led to an increase in passengers and crew seeking redress, according to lawyers in the United States.

Captain Tristan Loraine, a former British Airways pilot of 19 years’ experience, has conducted more than seven years of research into the issue. He claims that it was repeated exposure to contaminated air that rendered him unfit to fly.

His findings, which have been made into a documentary film, prompted a BBC investigation into cabin air last year. He is co-chairman of the Global Cabin Air Quality Executive (GCAQE), which represents 500,000 aviation workers on this issue.

The GCAQE recently criticised an ongoing government inquiry into contaminated air, claiming that although the attention is welcome, the research the inquiry is based on is flawed. Its criticisms centre on “inadequate” testing methods, which it claims will fail to detect TCP.

See www.aerotoxic.org for more details.

St. Frances of Rome

(1384-1440)

Frances’s life combines aspects of secular and religious life. A devoted and loving wife, she longed for a lifestyle of prayer and service, so she organized a group of women to minister to the needs of Rome’s poor.
Born of wealthy parents, Frances found herself attracted to the religious life during her youth. But her parents objected and a young nobleman was selected to be her husband.

As she became acquainted with her new relatives, Frances soon discovered that the wife of her husband’s brother also wished to live a life of service and prayer. So the two, Frances and Vannozza, set out togetherâ€"with their husbands’ blessingsâ€"to help the poor.

Frances fell ill for a time, but this apparently only deepened her commitment to the suffering people she met. The years passed, and Frances gave birth to two sons and a daughter. With the new responsibilities of family life, the young mother turned her attention more to the needs of her own household. The family flourished under Frances’s care, but within a few years a great plague began to sweep across Italy. It struck Rome with devastating cruelty and left Frances’s second son dead. In an effort to help alleviate some of the suffering, Frances used all her money and sold her possessions to buy whatever the sick might possibly need. When all the resources had been exhausted, Frances and Vannozza went door to door begging. Later, Frances’s daughter died, and the saint opened a section of her house as a hospital.

Frances became more and more convinced that this way of life was so necessary for the world, and it was not long before she requested and was given permission to found a society of women bound by no vows. They simply offered themselves to God and to the service of the poor. Once the society was established, Frances chose not to live at the community residence, but rather at home with her husband. She did this for seven years, until her husband passed away, and then came to live the remainder of her life with the societyâ€"serving the poorest of the poor.

St. John of God

(1495-1550)

Having given up active Christian belief while a soldier, John was 40 before the depth of his sinfulness began to dawn on him. He decided to give the rest of his life to God’s service, and headed at once for Africa, where he hoped to free captive Christians and, possibly, be martyred.
He was soon advised that his desire for martyrdom was not spiritually well based, and returned to Spain and the relatively prosaic activity of a religious goods store. Yet he was still not settled. Moved initially by a sermon of Blessed John of Avila, he one day engaged in a public beating of himself, begging mercy and wildly repenting for his past life.

Committed to a mental hospital for these actions, John was visited by Blessed John, who advised him to be more actively involved in tending to the needs of others rather than in enduring personal hardships. John gained peace of heart, and shortly after left the hospital to begin work among the poor.

He established a house where he wisely tended to the needs of the sick poor, at first doing his own begging. But excited by the saint’s great work and inspired by his devotion, many people began to back him up with money and provisions. Among them were the archbishop and marquis of Tarifa.

Behind John’s outward acts of total concern and love for Christ’s sick poor was a deep interior prayer life which was reflected in his spirit of humility. These qualities attracted helpers who, 20 years after John’s death, formed the Brothers Hospitallers, now a worldwide religious order.

John became ill after 10 years of service but tried to disguise his ill health. He began to put the hospital’s administrative work into order and appointed a leader for his helpers. He died under the care of a spiritual friend and admirer, Lady Anne Ossorio.

Sts. Perpetua and Felicity

(d. 203?)

“When my father in his affection for me was trying to turn me from my purpose by arguments and thus weaken my faith, I said to him, ‘Do you see this vesselâ€"waterpot or whatever it may be? Can it be called by any other name than what it is?’ ‘No,’ he replied. ‘So also I cannot call myself by any other name than what I amâ€"a Christian.’”
So writes Perpetua, young, beautiful, well-educated, a noblewoman of Carthage, mother of an infant son and chronicler of the persecution of the Christians by Emperor Septimius Severus.

Despite threats of persecution and death, Perpetua, Felicity (a slavewoman and expectant mother) and three companions, Revocatus, Secundulus and Saturninus, refused to renounce their Christian faith. For their unwillingness, all were sent to the public games in the amphitheater. There, Perpetua and Felicity were beheaded, and the others killed by beasts.

Perpetua’s mother was a Christian and her father a pagan. He continually pleaded with her to deny her faith. She refused and was imprisoned at 22.

In her diary, Perpetua describes her period of captivity: “What a day of horror! Terrible heat, owing to the crowds! Rough treatment by the soldiers! To crown all, I was tormented with anxiety for my baby.... Such anxieties I suffered for many days, but I obtained leave for my baby to remain in the prison with me, and being relieved of my trouble and anxiety for him, I at once recovered my health, and my prison became a palace to me and I would rather have been there than anywhere else.”

Felicity gave birth to a girl a few days before the games commenced.

Perpetua’s record of her trial and imprisonment ends the day before the games. “Of what was done in the games themselves, let him write who will.” The diary was finished by an eyewitness.

Inday Pinangga maayo kay naka-abot ka sa Maulbronn!

Founded in 1838, it emerged from a settlement, built about a monastery, which belonged to the Neckar Community in the Kingdom of Württemberg. In 1886, Maulbronn officially became a city and was an administrative center until 1938. The return of many displaced persons following the Second World War significantly raised the city's population.

Of particular note is the city's monastery, Maulbronn Abbey, which features prominently in Hermann Hesse's novel, Beneath the Wheel. The formerly Cistercian monastery has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993.

Legend has it that the city was founded by monks who followed a mule to valley with a source of clean water. The valley was also blessed with large deposits of soft sandstone for building. The monks built the original abbey and erected a fountain to honor the mule. The cities name means mule fountain.

Has anyone tried Rorschach test?

Test, Rorschach: A psychological test involving inkblots. The inkblots are used to determine what a person perceives (reads into) in the enigmatic and highly ambiguous shapes. Ten standardized blots are shown one at a time to a subject and their responses are recorded. The Rorschach test became a common psychological test and is still in use in psychology and psychiatry.

The test was created by Dr. Hermann Rorschach (1884-1922), a young Swiss psychiatrist. He published the test (also called the inkblot test) in 1921, not long before his untimely death.

Servant of God Sylvester of Assisi

(d. 1240)

Sylvester was one of the first 12 followers of St. Francis of Assisi and was the first priest in the Franciscan Order. A descendant of a noble family, Sylvester once sold Francis stones which were to be used to rebuild a church. When, a short while later, he saw Francis and Bernard of Quintavalle distributing Bernard's wealth to the poor, Sylvester complained that he had been poorly paid for the stones and asked for more money.
Though Francis obliged, the handful of money he gave Sylvester soon filled him with guilt. He sold all of his goods, began a life of penance and joined Francis and the others. Sylvester became a holy and prayerful man, and a favorite of Francisâ€"a companion on his journeys, the one Francis went to for advice. It was Sylvester and Clare who answered Francis' query with the response that he should serve God by going out to preach rather than by devoting himself to prayer.

Once in a city where civil war was raging, Sylvester was commanded by Francis to drive the devils out. At the city gate Sylvester cried out: "In the name of almighty God and by virtue of the command of his servant Francis, depart from here, all you evil spirits." The devils departed and peace returned to the city.

Sylvester lived 14 more years after the death of Francis and is buried near him in the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi.

We will be going over 6 French kissing techniques that are sure to make you a great French kisser.

French kissing technique #1: Don't overuse your tongue

It's very easy to fall into the temptation of overusing your tongue. Perhaps you've heard from someone else that one of the best French kissing techniques is to rapidly move your tongue around inside your partner's mouth. However, this is not a good habit to form. Many guys-and especially girls-are grossed out by the idea of a fast moving tongue in their mouth. Use your tongue moderately, so that your girlfriend/boyfriend isn't disgusted.

French kissing technique #2: Gently and slowing suck on the bottom lip of your boyfriend/girlfriend

You can approach him/her as you normally would for a French kiss. But instead of doing the normal routine, try to mix things up by slowly and gently sucking on their bottom lip. It's one of the great French kissing techniques that is sure to make them happy!

French kissing technique #3: Get your boyfriend/girlfriend's tongue in your mouth and slowly suck it in

Good French kissers know how to gently keep a tongue in their mouth by sucking. When you are done kissing, slowly stop sucking.

French kissing technique #4: Never, EVER bite your boyfriend/girlfriend's tongue

The worst possible thing you can do in French kissing is to bite the other participant's tongue. It hurts and will discourage further French kissing. This is one of the French kissing techniques that you must adhere to at all times.

French kissing technique #5: Move your tongue up and down in vertical pattern on the tip of your partner's tongue.

This is probably one of the most important French kissing techniques to keep in mind while kissing. Every good French kisser uses a specific motion while French kissing. The vertical motion is effective and pleasurable. Use this technique and your partner will enjoy your French kisses every time.

French kissing technique #6: Never cause pain

Be gentle with every French kiss. Very few people enjoy "rough" French kisses that cause pain. So be careful and be gentle when French kissing.

If you apply the above French kissing techniques to your French kissing, you can become a terrific French kisser.

Tongue Kiss: What is it?

A tongue kiss is simply a kiss that involves the use of the both the girl and the guy's tongues.

How to Tongue Kiss.

Tongue kissing is pretty straight-forward, but difficult for some people to master. It all comes down to following the set of rules for tongue kissing and having decent technique. If you know the rules (mentioned in another of our articles: French Kissing) and have ok technique, your tongue kisses will be enjoyable.

Why Go To Church?

A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it
made no sense to go to church every Sunday. "I've gone for 30 years now," he
wrote, "and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the
life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my
time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all."

This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the Editor" column, much to
the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this
clincher:

"I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000
meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one
of those meals. But I do know this.. They all nourished me and gave me the
strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I
would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for
nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!" When you are DOWN to nothing...
God is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and
receives the impossible! Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual
nourishment!

All right, now that you're done reading, send it on! I think everyone should
read this! "When Satan is knocking at your door, simply say, "Jesus, could you
get that for me?"

St. Casimir

(1458-1483)

Casimir, born of kings and in line (third among 13 children) to be a king himself, was filled with exceptional values and learning by a great teacher, John Dlugosz. Even his critics could not say that his conscientious objection indicated softness. Even as a teenager, Casimir lived a highly disciplined, even severe life, sleeping on the ground, spending a great part of the night in prayer and dedicating himself to lifelong celibacy.
When nobles in Hungary became dissatisfied with their king, they prevailed upon Casimir’s father, the king of Poland, to send his son to take over the country. Casimir obeyed his father, as many young men over the centuries have obeyed their government. The army he was supposed to lead was clearly outnumbered by the “enemy”; some of his troops were deserting because they were not paid. At the advice of his officers, Casimir decided to return home. His father was irked at the failure of his plans, and confined his 15-year-old son for three months. The lad made up his mind never again to become involved in the wars of his day, and no amount of persuasion could change his mind. He returned to prayer and study, maintaining his decision to remain celibate even under pressure to marry the emperor’s daughter. He reigned briefly as king of Poland during his father’s absence. He died of lung trouble at 23 while visiting Lithuania, of which he was also Grand Duke. He was buried in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Comment:

For many years Poland and Lithuania faded into the gray prison on the other side of the Iron Curtain. Despite repression, the Poles and Lithuanians remained firm in the faith which has become synonymous with their name. Their youthful patron reminds us: Peace is not won by war; sometimes a comfortable peace is not even won by virtue, but Christ’s peace can penetrate every government repression of religion.

As I grow
in age, I value women over 40 most of all. Here are just a
few reasons why:

A woman
over 40 will never wake you in the middle of the night and
ask, 'What are you thinking?' She doesn't care
what you think.

If a woman
over 40 doesn't want to watch the game, she doesn't
sit around whining about it. She does something she wants to
do, and it's usually more interesting.

Women over
40 are dignified. They seldom have a screaming match with
you at the opera or in the middle of an expensive
restaurant. Of course, if you deserve it, they won't
hesitate to shoot you if they think they can get away with
it.

Older
women are generous with praise, often undeserved. They know
what it's like to be unappreciated.

Women get
psychic as they age. You never have to confess your sins to
a woman over 40.

Once you
get past a wrinkle or two, a woman over 40 is far sexier
than her younger counterpart.

Older
women are forthright and honest. They'll tell you right
off if you are a jerk, if you are acting like one. You
don't ever have to wonder where you stand with her.

Yes, we
praise women over 40 for a multitude of reasons.
Unfortunately, it's not reciprocal. For every stunning,
smart, well-coiffed, hot woman over 40, there is a bald,
paunchy relic in yellow pants making a fool of himself with
some 22-year old waitress. Ladies, I apologize.

For all
those men who say, 'Why buy the cow when you can get the
milk for free? here's an update for you. Nowadays 80% of
women are against marriage. Why? Because women realize
it's not worth buying an entire pig just to get a little
sausage!

ps
A mentally stable man will never fear the independence of a woman

How To Tips / Re: Think twice when eating Tilapia
March 04, 2009, 03:44:34 PM
It is saddening that tilapia or Saint Peters' fish ( hopefully the domesticated version )  is not really healthful but much better than meat patties. Perhaps the tilapia caught at the Sea Of Galilee which is called Saint Peters' fish is the healthier version. Personally speaking this shortens my list of allowable supermarket supplied meats. Cooking it in either virgin coconut oil or virgin olive oil will help but just the same the meat is still not that beneficial to the health.

My concern is that the current milk fish might end up the same as the tilapia. Maybe it has something to do with the food it is being fed.

We got lots of genetically modified foods like soya, corn, rice, flax seeds. This is now locally consumed since there is less restrictions in our country.
There are farms in the USA that uses genetically modified grass eaten by cows. The meat are sold to big fast foods like Mcdo, Burger King and the like. You should not wonder why there are many obese Americans and Europeans. Asian countries who has changed eating ways like China and Japan are getting fatter too.

SAINT JOSEPH IS THE PATRON OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AS WELL AS OF CHILDREN, FAMILIES, VIRGINS, EXILES AND THE SUFFERING. HE IS ALSO INVOKED FOR A HAPPY AND HOLY DEATH AND FOR FINDING A GOOD HUSBAND

He is regarded as the Patron of the Catholic Church for the Church is the Holy Family extended in the course of the centuries. The Church is really Greater Nazareth, with Saint Joseph as its head. With the many problems being encountered by the Church today, it is an opportune time to call on its guardian and patron to protect it from its enemies.Saint Joseph watches over children with a loving care as he guarded and cared for the Infant Saviour. He protects families because he was the head of the greatest family that ever existed. He also loves workers because even if he came from the royal house of David, he worked as a carpenter to support the Holy Family. He protects virgins because he himself had a virginal heart, his wife was a Virgin and he stood nearest, after Mary, to the "Lamb without spot". He is also the patron of those who rejoice and suffer because his own heart experienced seven joys and seven sorrows. He is even the patron of exiles since he spent seven years with Jesus and Mary in a foreign land. He is invoked for a happy and holy death since he died in the arms of Jesus and Mary. He is likewise invoked by women who wish to find a good husband because he had all the God-given qualities as befitted the husband of Mary and the father of Jesus.

NINE-DAYS NOVENA TO ST. JOSEPH

(Note: This prayer was found in the 50th year of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In 1505, it was sent by the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. It is said that whoever shall read this prayer or take it with them, shall never die a sudden death or be drowned, nor shall poison take effect on them; neither shall they fall into the hands of the enemy, or shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle.)

Say this prayer for nine days for anything you may desire. Then let go and let God. Trust that whatever is the outcome of your novena is truly what is best for you in accordance with the will of God.)

O Saint Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires.

O Saint Joseph, assist me by your powerful intercession and obtain for me from your Divine Son all spiritual blessings through Jesus Christ, Our Lord; so that having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers.

O Saint Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me, and ask Him to return the Kiss when I draw my dying breath. Amen

O Saint Joseph, hear my prayers and obtain my petitions. O Saint Joseph, pray for me. (Mention your intention)

How To Tips / Paget Disease
March 04, 2009, 06:14:10 AM
Paget Disease of the Nipple: Questions and Answers

Key Points

    * Paget disease of the nipple is an uncommon type of cancer that forms in or around the nipple (see Question 1).
    * Paget disease of the nipple is almost always associated with an underlying breast cancer (see Questions 1 and 2).
    * Scientists do not know exactly what causes Paget disease of the nipple, but two major theories have been suggested for how it develops (see Question 2).
    * Symptoms of early-stage disease may include redness or crusting of the nipple skin; symptoms of more advanced disease often include tingling, itching, increased sensitivity, burning, or pain in the nipple (see Question 3).
    * Paget disease of the nipple is diagnosed by performing a biopsy (see Question 4).
    * Surgery is the usual treatment for Paget disease of the nipple. Additional treatments may be recommended under certain circumstances (see Question 5).
    * Many clinical trials for breast cancer are under way (see Question 6).

   1. What is Paget disease of the nipple?

Paget disease of the nipple, also called Paget disease of the breast, is an uncommon type of cancer that forms in or around the nipple (1, 2, 3). More than 95 percent of people with Paget disease of the nipple also have underlying breast cancer; however, Paget disease of the nipple accounts for less than 5 percent of all breast cancers (1). For instance, of the 211,240 new cases of breast cancer projected to be diagnosed in 2005, fewer than 11,000 will also involve Paget disease of the nipple (4).

Most patients diagnosed with Paget disease of the nipple are over age 50, but rare cases have been diagnosed in patients in their 20s (1). The average age at diagnosis is 62 for women and 69 for men. The disease is rare among both women and men.

Paget disease of the nipple was named after Sir James Paget, a scientist who noted an association between changes in the appearance of the nipple and underlying breast cancer (1, 5). There are several other unrelated diseases named after Paget, including Paget disease of the bone and Paget disease of the vulva; this fact sheet discusses only Paget disease of the nipple.

   2. What are the possible causes of Paget disease of the nipple?

Scientists do not know exactly what causes Paget disease of the nipple, but two major theories have been suggested for how it develops (1, 2). One theory proposes that cancer cells, called Paget cells, break off from a tumor inside the breast and move through the milk ducts to the surface of the nipple, resulting in Paget disease of the nipple. This theory is supported by the fact that more than 97 percent of patients with Paget disease also have underlying invasive breast cancer or ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) (1). DCIS, also called intraductal carcinoma, is a condition in which abnormal cells are present only in the lining of the milk ducts in the breast, and have not invaded surrounding tissue or spread to the lymph nodes. DCIS sometimes becomes invasive breast cancer. Invasive breast cancer is cancer that has spread outside the duct into the breast tissue, and possibly into the lymph nodes under the arm or into other parts of the body.

The other theory suggests that skin cells of the nipple spontaneously become Paget cells. This theory is supported by the rare cases of Paget disease in which there is no underlying breast cancer, and the cases in which the underlying breast cancer is found to be a separate tumor from the Paget disease (1).

   3. What are the symptoms of Paget disease of the nipple?

Symptoms of early Paget disease of the nipple include redness and mild scaling and flaking of the nipple skin (1). Early symptoms may cause only mild irritation and may not be enough to prompt a visit to the doctor (3). Improvement in the skin can occur spontaneously, but this should not be taken as a sign that the disease has disappeared. More advanced disease may show more serious destruction of the skin (1). At this stage, the symptoms may include tingling, itching, increased sensitivity, burning, and pain. There may also be discharge from the nipple, and the nipple can appear flattened against the breast (1, 2).

In approximately half of patients with Paget disease of the nipple, a lump or mass in the breast can be felt during physical examination (1). In most cases, Paget disease of the nipple is initially confined to the nipple, later spreading to the areola or other regions of the breast (1, 2). The areola is the circular area of darker skin that surrounds the nipple. Paget disease of the nipple can also be found only on the areola, where it may resemble eczema, a noncancerous itchy red rash (1). Although rare, Paget disease of the nipple can occur in both breasts (2).

   4. How is Paget disease of the nipple diagnosed?

If a health care provider suspects Paget disease of the nipple, a biopsy of the nipple skin is performed (1, 2, 3). In a biopsy, the doctor removes a small sample of tissue. A pathologist examines the tissue under a microscope to see if Paget cells are present. The pathologist may use a technique called immunohistochemistry (staining tissues to identify specific cells) to differentiate Paget cells from other cell types (1). A sample of nipple discharge may also be examined under a microscope for the presence of Paget cells (3).

Because most people with Paget disease of the nipple also have underlying breast cancer, physical examination and mammography (x-ray of the breast) are used to make a complete diagnosis.

   5. How is Paget disease of the nipple treated?

Surgery is the most common treatment for Paget disease of the nipple (1, 2, 5). The specific treatment often depends on the characteristics of the underlying breast cancer.

A modified radical mastectomy may be recommended when invasive cancer or extensive DCIS has been diagnosed (5). In this operation, the surgeon removes the breast, the lining over the chest muscles, and some of the lymph nodes under the arm. In cases where underlying breast cancer is not invasive, the surgeon may perform a simple mastectomy to remove only the breast and the lining over the chest muscles (2, 5).

Alternatively, patients whose disease is confined to the nipple and the surrounding area may undergo breast-conserving surgery or lumpectomy followed by radiation therapy (1, 2, 5). During breast-conserving surgery, the surgeon removes the nipple, areola, and the entire portion of the breast believed to contain the cancer. In most cases, radiation therapy is also used to help prevent recurrence (return of the cancer).

During surgery, particularly modified radical mastectomy, the doctor may perform an axillary node dissection to remove the lymph nodes under the arm (1, 5). The lymph nodes are then examined to see if the cancer has spread to them. In some cases, a sentinel lymph node biopsy may be performed to remove only one or a few lymph nodes. (For more information about sentinel lymph node biopsies, please see National Cancer Institute Fact Sheet 7.44, Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy: Questions and Answers, at http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Therapy/sentinel-node-biopsy on the Internet.)

Adjuvant treatment (treatment that is given in addition to surgery to prevent the cancer from coming back) may be part of the treatment plan, depending on the type of cancer and whether cancer cells have spread to the lymph nodes. Radiation treatment is a common adjuvant therapy for Paget disease of the nipple following breast-conserving surgery. Adjuvant treatment with anticancer drugs or hormone therapies may also be recommended, depending on the extent of the disease and prognostic factors (estimated chance of recovery from the disease or chance that the disease will recur).

   6. Are clinical trials (research studies) available? Where can people get more information about clinical trials?

Yes. The NCI is currently sponsoring many clinical trials for all types of breast cancer. These studies are designed to find new treatments and better ways to use current treatments. As new and improved treatments are found for breast cancer, the treatment options for Paget disease of the nipple will also improve (2, 5).

People interested in taking part in a clinical trial should talk with their doctor. Information about clinical trials is available from the NCI's Cancer Information Service (CIS) (see below) at 1â€"800â€"4â€"CANCER and in the NCI booklet Taking Part in Cancer Treatment Research Studies, which can be found at http://www.cancer.gov/publications on the Internet. This booklet describes how research studies are carried out and explains their possible benefits and risks. Further information about clinical trials is available at http://www.cancer.gov/clinicaltrials on the NCI's Web site. The Web site offers detailed information about specific ongoing studies by linking to PDQ®, the NCI's cancer information database. The CIS also provides information from PDQ.

St. Katharine Drexel

(1858-1955)

If your father is an international banker and you ride in a private railroad car, you are not likely to be drawn into a life of voluntary poverty. But if your mother opens your home to the poor three days each week and your father spends half an hour each evening in prayer, it is not impossible that you will devote your life to the poor and give away millions of dollars. Katharine Drexel did that.
She was born in Philadelphia in 1858. She had an excellent education and traveled widely. As a rich girl, she had a grand debut into society. But when she nursed her stepmother through a three-year terminal illness, she saw that all the Drexel money could not buy safety from pain or death, and her life took a profound turn.

She had always been interested in the plight of the Indians, having been appalled by reading Helen Hunt Jackson’s A Century of Dishonor. While on a European tour, she met Pope Leo XIII and asked him to send more missionaries to Wyoming for her friend Bishop James O’Connor. The pope replied, “Why don’t you become a missionary?” His answer shocked her into considering new possibilities.

Back home, she visited the Dakotas, met the Sioux leader Red Cloud and began her systematic aid to Indian missions.

She could easily have married. But after much discussion with Bishop O’Connor, she wrote in 1889, “The feast of St. Joseph brought me the grace to give the remainder of my life to the Indians and the Colored.” Newspaper headlines screamed “Gives Up Seven Million!”

After three and a half years of training, she and her first band of nuns (Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored) opened a boarding school in Santa Fe. A string of foundations followed. By 1942 she had a system of black Catholic schools in 13 states, plus 40 mission centers and 23 rural schools. Segregationists harassed her work, even burning a school in Pennsylvania. In all, she established 50 missions for Indians in 16 states.

Two saints met when she was advised by Mother Cabrini about the “politics” of getting her Order’s Rule approved in Rome. Her crowning achievement was the founding of Xavier University in New Orleans, the first Catholic university in the United States for blacks.

At 77, she suffered a heart attack and was forced to retire. Apparently her life was over. But now came almost 20 years of quiet, intense prayer from a small room overlooking the sanctuary. Small notebooks and slips of paper record her various prayers, ceaseless aspirations and meditation. She died at 96 and was canonized in 2000
