Bohol. We can't get enough of this little province, an example for the rest of us and a showcase for what tourism can be: low impact, low crime and wholesome fun.

Most travellers staying with Vicky take a farm tour led by an animated young agriculturist named Ronel, who treats his groups to the scents of nearly a dozen herbs. When not busy with tourists, the workers make handicrafts, keeping alive weaving and basketmaking traditions that might otherwise be fading away.

We stayed in a charmingly visionary place called Bohol Bee Farm on Panglao Island, near the bridge that connects the island to Bohol's mainland. Every detail in this home away from home shows the artistry of its Boholana owner, Vicky Wallace, a long-time US resident who came home to introduce a new way of life. The food is organic and tasty, and much of the produce comes from its backyard or nearby farms, including of course the honey from the resident bees

Last year around election time, I biked around Bohol and produced an I-Witness documentary based on the experience. Here's a video clip:

Bible Study / The Holy Name of Jesus
January 05, 2008, 08:44:00 PM

by Br. Peter Totleben, O.P.

One of the best things that I have discovered in religious life is the power of the Name of Jesus Christ. For the past year and a half, I have started more and more constantly to call on the Holy Name of Jesus and His mercy. This has transformed my relationship with God, and sustained me through the difficult periods of growth that come along with Christian discipleship.

Jesus' Name is such a powerful prayer because names are powerful things. If I do not know a person's name, then that person is a stranger to me. But, as soon as I know his name, we are no longer strangers. We have a relationship. We can talk to one another and share our lives. When we recall a person's name, that person becomes present to us. When we name a person, we express something of their personality.

CLAAS:Benazir Butto's assasination,a devastating news for Pakistan's oppressed Christians
London, U.K, Dec.02,2007 (vaticans.org) - The killing of former Prime Minister and opposition leader Benazir Bhutto is "devastating news" for Pakistan's oppressed Christian population. This was the reaction of CLAAS, an organisation that fights for the rights of Pakistan's 3.5 million-strong Christian minority.

Nasir Saeed, director of CLAAS had said that Ms Bhutto had been "the best hope" for the country's non-Muslim population as well as the nation.

"We had spoken with Ms Bhutto about the appalling persecution that Christians currently face. She listened hard to our grievances, and promised that she would attempt to rectify the situation, once she was back in the Parliament. Pakistani Christians around the World had been praying for her and supporting her for many years now. She was the most enlightened and moderate politician and struggled hard to bring real democracy to the country. The Christian minority in Pakistan has suffered a great loss and now fear that they will never be able to replace Ms Bhutto of whom they held great hopes for an end to fundamentalism and persecution.

"Now, following her brutal assassination, we need governments and citizens around the world to speak out, and to apply pressure on Pakistan's future Government."

Although Pakistan's constitution promises equal rights for all, the country's non-Muslim population are effectively second class citizens. CLAAS (Centre of Legal Aid Assurance and Settlement) receives hundreds of first-hand accounts of wrongful arrest, imprisonment, torture and even execution of Christians. Similarly, reports of attacks, rapes and murders on Christians go un-investigated by the police and courts.

At the heart of many of these incidents is the nation's Blasphemy Laws. These state that a person may face execution for profaning the name of the Prophet Mohammed, or defacing the Quran. These laws have been used for arrest and persecution of Christians, often based on an unsupported allegations made by someone with a score to settle.

A bill was brought to Pakistan's elected parliament in 2007, attempting to amend the Blasphemy Laws. It was dismissed out of hand by the Parliamentary Affairs minister Dr Sher Afghan. "Islam is our religion and such bills hurt our feelings. This is not a secular state but the Islamic Republic of Pakistan."

Mr Saeed says that CLAAS will fight on, offering individual legal aid, and support for everybody suffering because of these laws. But, he said, it was time for the World to speak out: "If enough people knew about these appalling injustices, and made their voices heard, we could finally bring an end to the endless tales of torture, rape, execution and mob violence that we have to read about as a matter of course at CLAAS."

Warsaw, Jan. 3, 2008 - The Polish daily Rzeczpospolita reports that Pope Benedict XVI will name a new primate for Poland sometime this spring.

If the Rzeczpospolita report is accurate-- and it has not been confirmed by Vatican sources-- it would contradict earlier indications that Pope Benedict would allow the current Polish primate, Cardinal Jozef Glemp, the retired Archbishop of Warsaw, to retain that title until he reaches his 80th birthday in 2009.

Cardinal Glemp became the Polish primate in 1981, when he succeeded the legendary Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski as Archbishop of Warsaw and of Gniezno. Historically the title of primate was attached to the Gniezno archdiocese. But in 1992, when he approved a restructuring of the Polish hierarchy and appointed a new Archbishop of Gniezno (Henryk Muszynski), Pope John Paul II stipulated that Cardinal Glemp would remain the primate.

Los Angeles,U.S.A, Dec.03,2007 â€" Relying on a weekend report in ‘L'Osservatore Romano’, the Associated press is reporting that Catholic and Muslim representatives have agreed to a Spring meeting in Rome to begin what many hope will develop into an historic “dialogue” between the Catholic Church and significant leaders from the broader Islamic community.

Pope Benedict XVI proposed such a dialogue in his response to the now famous letter sent to the Holy See by 138 Muslim scholars from throughout the world.

The Holy Father’s response was criticized by some, even within the broader Christian community, for not having been more immediate. Some of the same people had also criticized his September 12, 2006 speech to an academic community in Regensburg on faith and reason without having read the full text.

Certain reports concerning his now famous scholarly presentation failed to identify the fact that that Benedict XVI was actually quoting from a medieval text which referred to some of the teachings of the Muslim prophet Muhammad on the use of “the sword” to advance Islam as "evil and inhuman."

In other words, Pope Benedict never even made the comment.

Unfortunately, these reports invited a global reaction within some segments of the Islamic community which simply was not justified by the text. Worse yet, subsequent reports, equally deficient in checking the facts, fanned the flames of rage.

The Holy Father later stated, in a conciliatory gesture, that he was "deeply sorry" about the reactions. He clarified the fact that he was citing from a medieval text in a much broader talk concerning the proper and indispensable role of faith and reason on the path toward dialogue between major religions.

This conciliatory tone prompted Thirty-eight Muslim scholars to send the Pope a letter expressing gratitude for his clarifications and inviting dialogue. The Holy See did not immediately respond to this letter.

Again, there were some quick to criticize.

However, this measured approach now seems to have assisted the growing momentum toward dialogue. The number of Muslim signatories grew to over 138 scholars and represented several schools within the diverse religious traditions within global Islam.

These 138 scholars proposed that the two religious traditions work to find some common ground toward peaceful dialogue and cooperation. One of their suggestions was to focus upon the mutual emphasis between Christianity and Islam on the call to the love of God and neighbor as integral to religious faith and practice.

These Islamic scholars and leaders who signed the letter noted that Christians and Muslims comprise 55 percent of the global population and called for a peaceful path toward dialogue.

Many observers of this Pontificate see this Islamic overture and the ongoing dialogue which followed the now famous University of Regensburg address, as a sign that the deliberate and measured nature of the Papal response has produced a favorable result.

Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran gave this interview to L'Osservatore Romano, the official Vatican paper cited by the associated press. In this same interview he indicated that these three Islamic representatives would work with Catholic representatives to prepare the formal framework for a larger meeting intended to begin an ongoing dialogue between Islam and Christianity.

The Cardinal is the head of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue and, as such, is delegated with the authority to pursue such dialogue.

Catholic theology properly makes use of the term “ecumenism” only to refer to dialogue between Christians. It has been extended, due to the special relationship with the Jewish people as elder brothers and sons of the covenant with Abraham, to include Catholic and Jewish dialogue within its definitional embrace.

The term “Inter-religious dialogue” properly refers to dialogue between Catholics, as Christians, and other major religious traditions, including Islam.

The Cardinal did not give a specific date as to when this formal dialogue would begin. He simply indicated that it would occur during the spring and will include a number of subjects; the obligation to a mutual respect for the dignity of the human person, reciprocal understanding between all religions, and an appropriate tolerance which lies at the heart of an authentic vision of religious freedom.

The Cardinal told the official Vatican newspaper: "The meeting with a delegation of some of the 138 Muslims, planned for Rome next spring, is in a certain sense historic.”

hi to all nga mga taga Anda dinhi sa TB,

I would consider myself nga taga Anda bisan wala ko gipanganak o kagikan sa Anda kay didto man ko naggraduate sa High School (Holy Infant) and I was the first Federated President of Kabataang Barangay (SK karon). Nagpasalamat ko ug dako sa pagsalig sa mga taga Andahanon nga nigraduate sa HIA na for the first time in more than 40 years of being an institution of learning, akoy gipili as the 1st President of the HIA Alumni.

A tremendous task lies ahead, that of improving our school and enhancing the lives of our students and faculty and for the coming generation.  I hope that TB could be one of the venues for communicating ideas, bridging all Andahanons and making a BIG DIFFERENCE in our town and community....

New process boosts levels of heart-healthy compounds in cocoa powder

Scientists in Spain are reporting development of a new process to make cocoa powder with higher amounts of the healthful chemical compounds linked to chocolate's beneficial effects. The study is scheduled for publication in the May 30 issue of ACS' Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Juan Carlos Espin de Gea and colleagues report that the new cocoa powder contains levels of some flavonoids 8 times higher than conventional cocoa. They achieved the higher flavonoid content by omitting the traditional fermentation and roasting steps used in the processing of cocoa beans. Those steps destroy some flavonoids, which are natural antioxidants.

Researchers used the flavonoid-enriched cocoa powder in a clinical trial to determine whether the compounds were bioavailable - in a form that humans can absorb. In the trial, six healthy volunteers consumed a milk drink made with flavonoid-enriched cocoa. The same volunteers later drank chocolate milk made from traditional cocoa. Blood and urine tests established the bioavailability of flavonoids in the enriched-milk drink, showing that people do absorb higher levels of the compounds. Based on the results, researchers suggest further clinical trials on the health benefits of flavonoid-enriched cocoa powder.

The Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment-2 (GOME-2) on board MetOp-A launched in October 2006 and currently undergoing commissioning has delivered the first geophysical products for monitoring the Earth's ozone layer, and European and global air quality.

This marks the start of a long-term European commitment to monitor the recovery of the ozone layer and to support the monitoring and forecasting of air quality, both for European citizens and at a global level. The products have been developed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in partnership with EUMETSAT’s Satellite Application Facility on Ozone and Atmospheric Chemistry Monitoring (O3M SAF), which is coordinated by the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI). The O3M SAF generates, validates, archives and distributes atmospheric ozone, trace gases, aerosols and surface-ultraviolet radiation data products using measurements from MetOp-A.

GOME-2, a scanning spectrometer, follows on from successful GOME flown on ESA’s ERS-2 satellite launched in April 1995, and provides near-global coverage on a daily basis. The instrument measures profiles of atmospheric ozone and the distribution of other trace gases in the atmosphere. The instrument measures profiles of atmospheric ozone and the distribution of other trace gases in the atmosphere that are related to the depletion of ozone in the stratosphere, and to natural and anthropogenic sources of pollution.

The amount of surface ultraviolet radiation is also derived from GOME-2 measurements. The ozone layer at an altitude of 20-30 kilometres shields the Earth from harmful ultra-violet radiation. However, the depletion of this protective ozone layer, which is most noticeable over the Arctic and Antarctic regions, is of particular environmental concern. The resulting increased levels of ultraviolet radiation reaching the surface of the Earth can cause serious damage to human health, agriculture, forests and water ecosystems. High levels of atmospheric pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide produced by fossil fuel combustion, can damage respiratory health and contribute to acid deposition which harms soil and vegetation.
