11 Amazing Photos of the Super Blood Moon â€" In Case You Missed It

Brittany Jones Cooper
Editor, Yahoo Travel
September 28, 2015

On Sunday night/Monday morning, people all around the world looked up to the sky to catch a rare celestial event that hasn’t occurred in more than 30 years.

In addition to the full moon appearing 14 percent larger than normal (called a supermoon), the moon took on a reddish tint caused by a lunar eclipse. This phenomena is called a blood moon, and made for a breathtaking sight in the night sky.

The supermoon/blood moon combination won’t occur for another 18 years, so in case you missed it, here are some of the most amazing moon photos captured around the world.

dunkin donuts munchkins

the munchkin is supposedly the part taken to make a donut hole...

The Munchkin illustrates the concept of exaptation well, though it requires a baker as “selector”, whereas natural selection operates with no selector. A doughnut in this example is a circular piece of dough with an empty circular middle. Imagine that the shape is created by making a round of dough, and then cutting out the middle piece, leaving you with the doughnut and some extra dough. Imagine further that the baker typically throws the middle piece aside as it serves no purpose. The middle piece here is a spandrel â€" it serves no function to the baker, but is rather a leftover portion of the functional dough â€" the doughnut.

However, the baker decides that those leftover pieces are too much of a waste. She decides to roll them into a ball and sell them separately from the doughnuts. She gives them a name, Munchkin, and markets them to dieters, children, and dog-owners for treats, and finds that these formerly useless pieces are now bringing in money. They have been co-opted for the function of money making, and therefore the Munchkin is an exaptation. Now she finds them so popular, the baker is creating different flavors, and fun boxes in which to sell the doughnut holes.

What originated as a mere by-product of the doughnut has now come to serve the function of a profitable treat.

Around 70 journalists are also offered spots on the pope’s plane. The catch here is that the journalist’s organization has to pay for their plane tickets, often at a price equal to a business class plane ticket for economy seats.

Shepherd One may be a mythical object, but it doesn’t mean it isn’t still a treat, and in some cases even a blessing, to take to the skies with such a heavenly figure.

This wasn’t a quick turn-around. The whole process took four months to plan the three-hour flight from Tel Aviv to Rome.

“Everyone in the company worked on this, from maintenance to marketing,” Ms. Hanegby said.

The pope travels en mass with a posse of approximately 35 people, including several cardinals and bishops, a handful of priests and employees of the Vatican press office.

Among that special team were Captain Yaron Shimoni, a former Israeli Air Force pilot, and Chief Steward Nimrod Demajo, who holds an MBA and is an avid triathlete. In-flight service manager Yigal Levy is a former opera singer. Flight attendant Minerva Mazzawii is an Arab-Christian born in Haifa. She graduated from the Scuola Italiana Carmelita, a school in that city that was founded by six nuns who immigrated to Israel from Italy. She also happens to be a certified personal trainer. Flight attendant Assafo Avavo was born in a small village in Ethiopia and immigrated to Israel when she was 1, as part of Operation Solomon, an emergency program initiated by Israel to evacuate Ethiopian Jews.

“We wanted to show the pope the variety of people who work with El Al,” Ms. Hanegby said.

The airline’s chef, Moshe Segev, even prepared a special Israeli-influenced menu.

In keeping with how social-media savvy this pope has become, El Al asked all of their Facebook fans to assemble their special wishes for Pope Francis. When he arrived on the plane the crew presented him with a bound book of the social-media missives.

The Pope was shrewdly deliberate even in his flight plans. We once flew back from Japan to Rome via Alaska to avoid overflying the Soviet Union. During his flights, John Paul always blessed each country and sent messages to its leader.”

Local commercial carriers do tend to get very excited for a papal visit on one their planes. Last year Yahoo Travel got an inside look at what it was like for El Al airlines to have the pope on one of their planes.

“We wanted to give him a very special and unique Israeli experience. Everything had to be special. We even hand-picked a very unique crew.” Adi Hanegby, a product development manager in El Al Israel’s marketing department told us.

New Yorker writer Robin Wright recently published her fascinating account of flying across four continents with Pope John Paul II that pulls back the curtain on what it is like to travel with the leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics.

“We traveled from Rome on Alitalia, then picked up a national airline in each host country for the next leg,” Wright wrote. “The only thing truly papal about each flight was the yellow-and-white Vatican flag that popped out from a cockpit window on landing. We once took a Philippines Airline plane with ‘HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD’ emblazoned on the side, in honor of its new Los Angeles route. That plane got so much press playâ€"for the ironyâ€"that the airline had it painted over and replaced it with a huge ‘VIVA IL PAPA’ for our six-day tour.

Unlike Airforce One which is tricked out with suites, amenities and all manner of gadgets, the planes the pope takes are of fairly ordinary stock.

The Vatican will typically charter an Alitalia flight to a country during most of the pope’s foreign visits.

The name Shepherd One certainly invokes grand visions of a fancy papal jet. In reality, when the pope flies on his Alitalia leg of the journey, the commercial plane is little changed from any other flight. The pope just enjoys a row in business class all to himself.

From there the pontiff will switch to a national commercial carrier. For example, Francis will be flying American while he is in the United States.

American news media love few things more than catchy nicknames.  In the pantheon of catchy nicknames, “Shepherd One,” certainly does the trick.

Awaiting the arrival of Pope Francis on American soil this week news anchors across the country, and around the world, could not stop talking about Shepherd One, the plane that carries the pope.

It’s a bit of a misnomer since the pope doesn’t actually own his own plane. Shepherd One isn’t a private plane. Rather, the name actually refers to whatever commercial plane the pope happens to be traveling on at the time.

The monkey was intrigued by its reflection in the camera and took several mug shots, Mr Slater says

He argues that it took "much time and more perseverance" to get the selfie, taken on a reserve on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi in 2011.

He had to spend several days with the monkeys so that they became relaxed in his company. He said he only managed to get the photo by setting up his camera on a tripod with a cable release switch which the monkey in the famous selfie pressed.

In addition, he had to make sure that the light and contrast switches on the camera were properly set - work which he says is more than sufficient for him to claim copyright of the photos.

'Breach of integrity'

The selfie of the crested macaque money has been widely distributed around the world by numerous outlets, including Wikipedia. They and other outlets argue that the copyright to the images cannot be owned because they were taken by an animal rather than a person.

copyright©David J Slater
Mr Slater says that he had to earn the trust of the monkeys over several days before venturing close enough to get the selfie

Earlier this week, activists from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) filed a lawsuit in San Francisco seeking permission for it to administer all proceeds from the photos for the benefit of the male monkey, which it identified as six-year-old Naruto.

"If Peta US prevails in this lawsuit, it will be the first time that a non-human animal is declared the owner of property, rather than being declared a piece of property himself or herself," Peta Director Mimi Bekhechi said.
But Mr Slater told the BBC that the attitude of Peta and Wikipedia "stinks" and is a flagrant breach of his artistic integrity.

"It took three days of blood, sweat and tears to get the selfie in which I had to be accepted by the group of monkeys before they would allow me to come close enough to introduce them to my camera equipment," Mr Slater told the BBC.

"The trouble is, other people are trying to steal the ownership rights and I will fight to resist that."

The selfie has attracted international attention - and a row over its ownership

The photographer at the centre of an international row over the ownership of a selfie photograph taken by a monkey in Indonesia has told the BBC that he will vigorously resist the latest challenge to its copyright.

On Monday, animal rights activists sought US legal permission for proceeds from the photos to benefit the monkey.

But David Slater said it took three days of hard work to get the photo.
He said that money accrued from its re-use around the world belongs to him.

Live Aid, a 1985 fund-raising effort headed by Geldof, induced millions of people in the West to donate money and to urge their governments to participate in the relief effort in Ethiopia. Some of the proceeds also went to the famine hit areas of Eritrea. The event raised £145 million.

Buerk's news piece was seen by Irish singer Bob Geldof, who quickly organised the charity supergroup Band Aid. their single, "Do They Know It's Christmas?", was released on 3 December 1984 and became Britain's best-selling single within a few weeks, eventually selling 3.69 million copies domestically. All proceeds from the single, apart from Value-added tax, went to charities working to relieve the famine.

Background

A widespread famine affected the inhabitants of today's Eritrea and Ethiopia from 1983 to 1985.

Close to 8 million people became famine victims during the drought of 1984, and over 1 million died. In the same year (October 23), a BBC news crew was the first to document the famine, with Michael Buerk describing "a biblical famine in the 20th Century" and "the closest thing to hell on Earth". The report shocked Britain, motivating its citizens to bring world attention to the crisis in Ethiopia.

Yogi Berra, baseball player and source of folk wisdom, dies at 90

By Holly Yan and Don Melvin, CNN

Updated 1029 GMT (1729 HKT) September 23, 2015

Story highlights

His malapropisms made him one of the most quoted Americans
He was the backbone of a New York Yankees dynasty
Berra played on teams that won 10 World Series championships

(CNN) Yogi Berra, the baseball legend known as much for his on-the-field historic streak as his unintentionally humorous malapropisms, has died.

He died Tuesday night, the Yogi Berra Museum said. He was 90.

Berra was one of the greatest catchers in baseball history. But it is for his sometimes mystifying utterances, or Yogisms, that he is most widely known.

Perhaps his most famous observation was, "It ain't over 'til it's over." It was pure Yogi -- at once blindingly obvious, yet beyond that a call to courage, an exhortation never to give up until the ballgame's final out.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Yogi Berra passed away Tuesday night at the age of 90. #YogiBerra pic.twitter.com/0BSctBzhTb
    â€" Yogi Berra Museum (@Yogi_Museum) September 23, 2015

Berra was the backbone of a New York Yankees dynasty that won 10 World Series championships -- the most in the sport's history.

Born Lawrence Peter Berra, the son of Italian immigrants, one version is that he earned the nickname "Yogi" from a childhood friend who said the snake charmer in a movie looked like Berra.

He dropped out of school in the 8th grade to help support his family by playing baseball, then later served in the U.S. Navy.
