Question and Answer / Who were the Church Fathers?

Who were the Church Fathers?
#8002
Answer:

Look up Romans 6:7. All standard English translations render this verse as some variation on the statement "He who has died has been freed from sin." The topic here is one of sanctification, the making holy of the believer, or the freeing of him from sin.

What is significant about 6:7 is that when it says the one who has died has been freed from sin, the word for "freed" is actually the Greek word for "justified." What it literally said was "he who has died has been justified from sin," yet the context is so obviously sanctificational that all standard English translations of the Bible rendered "justified from sin" as "freed from sin." This shows that there is not a rigid wall between justification and sanctification in the apostle Paul's mind. The semantic ranges of the two terms overlap.

The new Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that "justification includes the remission of sins, sanctification, and the renewal of the inner man" (CCC 2019)> Protestants deny that the last two of these are part of justification. What Bible verses can I use to show they are?

Answer:

As the Bible says, I am already saved (Rom. 8:24, Eph. 2:5-8), but I’m also being saved (1 Cor. 1:8, 2 Cor. 2:15, Phil. 2:12), and I have the hope that I will be saved (Rom. 5:9-10, 1 Cor. 3:12-15). Like the apostle Paul, I am working out my salvation in fear and trembling (Phil. 2:12), with hopeful confidence in the promises of Christ (Rom. 5:2, 2 Tim. 2:11-13).

Unless you learn to empty yourselves... and carry you cross... you can not enter the Kingdom of Heaven

This is important. The concept of carrying our "crosses". My confessor told me this the other time when I observed the sacrament of reconciliation. I was feeling quite guilty and he reassured me that all men have these crosses, a sinful nature. He told me that it is not our body that defines ourselves, but what we do with our body. Just because one is tempted does not necessarily mean we should follow through with said temptation. Carrying one's cross allows one to resist that temptation to sin, or what say you. The Good Lord will send forth good graces to strengthen us during these moments in our lives.

Yes, you're right, Fr. Roel. We all have our own crosses and we are all called to carry them....

I have a colleague at work, a general surgeon intern, who is an agnostic (a teeter totter, i would say). We had a discussion during our break regarding the soul and the existence of God. He stated, "its impossible to prove that there is a god, Lorenzo." I asked him, "what is your reasoning for that?"

"You can't see a god, seeing is believing," he said.

"Well, Jeffrey, let me ask you a question, can you see an atom?"

"No."

"Okay, then. But you and I know it exists right? Atoms exist because all things material are all composed of atoms, which in turn makes up elements, compounds, etc. So just because you cannot see an atom does not necessarily mean it does not exist. Just because you cannot see God does not mean he doesn't exist because all things are made possible through Him."

He smiled at me. We continued our lunch and went back to rounds.

looks like an agnostic hesitates while an atheist is sure.  the problem with the latter is that one is sure only of one's denial (that there is no god).  blazes.  the fact that one denies the existence of someone could only start from the premise that there is someone that one should deny.  how credible, then, is that denial?  what a trap.

You're right, Isles. It is impossible to empirically disprove the existence of God.

The Book of Mormon comprises 15 books, each allegedly written by an ancient American prophet. It professes to be a religious and secular history of Hebrews who fled Jerusalem and certain persecution in 600 B.C. Lehi, an alleged prophet and contemporary of Jeremiah, led his wife, children, and their spouses through the Arabian wilderness to the shores of "the large waters."

After much hardship and contention, the righteous son Nephi built a ship and the company sailed to a new "promised land," but not before having obtained a collection of brass plates on which was recorded not only the Pentateuch (or first five books of the Old Testament) but also a record of the Jews from the beginning down to that day. All the while, Nephi had been making metal plates of his own and engraving on them a record of his family’s labors.

Upon arriving in the Western Hemisphere, and after the death of Lehi, Nephi’s brothers Laman and Lemuel rebelled against Nephi, forcing him and his followers to separate from them. Because of their unbelief, the Lamanites (as the followers of Laman andLemuel were called) were cursed with a "skin of blackness"â€"which here means a darker, American Indian skin tone, not a Negro complexionâ€"and became persecutors of the Nephites. At Nephi’s death in the mid-sixth century B.C., his younger brother Jacob took up the story and the plates. Several other alleged prophets followed Jacob, maintaining written records of the Nephites or "American Hebrews."

Throughout these centuries, and reflecting the same theme sketched for Israel by Old Testament authors, the Nephites enjoyed periods of material prosperity when they followed the Lord’s voice and languished in misery when they didn’t. Much of the book is a dull, repetitive recording of bloody battles waged between Nephites and Lamanites.

Evil kings, corrupt judges, "secret combinations" (or "gangs" of robbers), persecution of the righteous, their subsequent apostasy and restoration, massive genocideâ€"this is the stuff of the Book of Mormon. There are occasional discourses on religion, most of which remind the reader of the words of Old Testament prophets, the Sermon on the Mount, or the teachings of St. Paul, despite the chronological problems this poses.

Towards the end of the Nephite-Lamanite record we find inserted, out of chronological sequence, the "Book of Ether." These 15 chapters are said to be the record of yet another group of Hebrew émigrés, these dispersed at the Tower of Babel. Following the "brother of Jared," who had had a vision of the "spirit body" of Jesus Christ, these righteous ones built barges and sailed for the promised land of America.

The "Jaredites" soon split into factions, warring with one another throughout a succession of kings, prophets, murder, and intrigue. Some of their prophets predicted the coming forth of the Book of Mormon and the establishing in America of the New Jerusalem.

The forces of good and evil ultimately arrayed themselves in a final battle. Millions were killed; indeed, every single Jaredite but one was slain. The prophet Ether recorded the devastation on twenty-four metal plates that were later discovered by Nephites and appended to their own writings.

Without doubt, the high point of the Book of Mormon is recorded in Third Nephi. This book allegedly covers the period from A.D. 1-35. Raids, murders, government upheavals, tempests, earthquakes, and fires allegedly preceded the appearance of Jesus Christ on the American continent. According to Mormonism, Jesus Christ showed himself to the people of America in the year 34 and established a second church, paralleling the one in the Old World.

The Book of Mormon story ends early in the fifth century. By the fourth century war and carnage had consumed both the faithful Nephites and the reprobate Lamanites. After gathering hundreds of thousands of warriors to the Hill Cumorah (located in New York state), the Nephites were utterly massacred by the sword by an even greater army of "dark and filthy" Lamanites (Mormon 5:15; Mormons frequently identify contemporary Native Americans as descendants of these Lamanites).

The only survivor was Moroni, the son of the Nephite prophet Mormon, from whom the book takes its name. To him his father had entrusted the centuries-old records of God’s American prophets, to which Moroni himself added a few concluding chapters. Before dying in 421, Moroni allegedly placed the gold plates in a stone and cement box and buried it in a hillside near present-day Palmyra, east of Rochester, New York.

In Joseph Smith’s day, several burning theological issues occupied the attention of scholar and layman alike: the nature of religious authority and priesthood; the necessity of baptism; the validity of infant baptism; the administration of the flesh and blood of Christ. Smith found the 13 pages of the book of Moroni that just "happened" to resolve the theological disputes of the day.

Question and Answer / What's The Book of Mormon about?
December 18, 2012, 01:33:32 AM
Mormon missionaries have been bugging me to read their Book of Mormon. I don't plan to do so since it is false scripture, but I would like to know what the book is about when I talk to them. Can you give me an overview?
#8015
There is definitely a difference between the two. Many people confuse the terms, and some people who are really agnostics mistakenly give themselves the label of atheist.

An agnostic is someone who believes he, or people in general, can never come to know anything about ultimate spiritual matters. His refrain might be, "I don’t know if there is a God."

An atheist, on the other hand, denies emphatically that there is a God. The atheist’s refrain would be, "I know there is no God."

Answer:

In Matthew 28:19 Jesus explicitly commands his apostles to baptize in the name of the Trinity. This is where the Church received the Trinitarian formula. It wasn’t some pope’s idea. In Acts 2:38 the author is not presenting a liturgical formula. He is concerned with distinguishing Christ’s baptism from John the Baptist’s. The practice of the early Church was thoroughly Trinitarian.

Question:

How can I explain the Trinity to a "Oneness" Pentecostal who says that Jesus is the only God and that the Father and the Holy Spirit are manifestations and not different persons of the Divinity? And how can I explain baptism in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost when this person insists on Acts 2:38, repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus? He claims the name of the three persons, or manifestations in his view, is Jesus.

Question and Answer / Re: Does God want us to be wealthy?
December 18, 2012, 01:22:37 AM
Answer:

Jesus tells a rich young man who wants to know what he must do to gain eternal life: "Go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me" (Matt. 19:20). Then Jesus says of the rich: "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God" (Matt. 19:24).

Your friends are only kidding themselves. The Gospels are full of examples of God’s favor being focused on the poor, not the rich. Jesus enters the world in a stable and lives in a working-class family. St. Joseph was a laborer, not a worker with fine wood. Through the years there have been many who have preached the gospel of the full stomach. But it is not the gospel of Jesus. Most of the saints who were born into wealth renounced it sooner or later.

Question and Answer / Does God want us to be wealthy?
December 18, 2012, 01:21:41 AM
Question:

I have been approached by some friends of mine who are part of a non-denominational Christian church who claim that God desires us all to be wealthy and that if we do not achieve wealth, it is due to a lack of faith. Does God want us to be wealthy?

#8022
Answer:

Jesus died for the redemption of all mankind. The apostle Paul says, "For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe" (1 Tim. 4:10). God desires the salvation of all men (cf. 1 Tim. 2:3â€"4), thus he died to redeem mankind and offer salvation to all. His death redeemed mankind collectively, so we can say that even non-Christians are redeemed. Because each person has free will, he can choose to reject the salvation offered him as a gift. So, while all are redeemed, it is possible that not all will be saved. Christ’s death is sufficient for the salvation of all, but it is efficient for the salvation of those who choose to accept that gift.

I cried at work when I found out about this shooting. I had just arrived at work when Dr. Maria, my boss, told me about the shooting. The entire day was depressing for me because I thought of them ..and the reaction of their family. How can a person decide to take the lives of young innocent babies during this festive season? The whole day yesterday i could not stop thinking of the families and the kids. Seeing the pictures of these little ones hurts me and pains me knowing the lives that were stolen. I pray that the Good Lord give strength and comfort to their family members and friends who are grieving now. Dearest Lord, accept the little ones into your Kingdom. In Jesus' Name. We Pray. Amen.

A gunman killed 26 people, 20 of them children between the ages of 5 and 10, in a shooting on Friday morning at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., about 65 miles northeast of New York City, the authorities said.

The gunman, who was believed to be in his 20s, walked into a classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary School where his mother was a teacher. He shot and killed her and then shot 18 students in the classroom. He also shot five other adults, and then killed himself inside the school. Various news outlets identified the shooter as Ryan Lanza. The shooting ranks among the worst in recent United States history.

“The marjority of those who died today were children, beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old,” a visibly distraught President Obama said during a nationally televised address.

After pausing to compose himself for perhaps five long seconds, Mr. Obama said, “They had their entire lives ahead of them: birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own.'’

Then the president wiped the corner of his eye.

Some witnesses described a harrowing scene inside the school with the sounds of gunfire followed by sounds of screams.

One 9-year-old student said he was in the gym when the shooting erupted.

“We were in the gym, and I heard really loud bangs,'’ said the boy, as he stood shivering and weeping outside the school with his father’s arms draped around him. “We thought that someone was knocking something over. And we heard yelling, and we heard gunshots. We heard lots of gunshots. We heard someone say, ‘Put your hands up.’ I heard, ‘Don’t shoot.’ We had to go into the closet in the gym. Then someone came and told us to run down the hallway. There were police at every door. There were lots of people crying and screaming.'’

Another student at the school told an NBC affiliate in Connecticut: “I was in the gym and I heard like seven loud booms, and the gym teachers told us to go in the corner and we huddled. We all heard these booming noises, and we started crying. So the gym teachers told us to go into the office where no one could find us. Then a police officer told us to run outside.”

State police said the Newtown police called them shortly after 9:30 a.m., according to Lt. J. Paul Vance of the Connecticut State Police. “On- and off-duty troopers responded to the school, and with Newtown police immediately upon arrival entered the school and began an active shooter search,” Lieutenant Vance said.

Eighteen of the students were pronounced dead at the school and two others were taken to hospitals where they were declared dead.

Meredith Artley, the managing editor of CNN.com, said that someone who works at the school told her the shooting happened in the hallway. “She described it as a ‘Pop, pop, pop,'” Ms. Artley said. “She said three people went out into the hall and only one person came back, the vice principal, she said, who was shot in the leg or the foot, who came crawling back. She cowered under the table and called 911. She never saw the shooting. There must have been a hundred rounds.”

Mr. Obama was briefed on the shooting at 10:30 a.m., the White House said.

“We’ve endured too many of these tragedies in these past few years and each time I learn the news I react not as a president but as anyone else would as a parent and that was especially true today,'’ Mr. Obama said on Friday afternoon. “I know there’s not a parent in America who doesn’t feel the same overwhelming grief that i do.”

One nearby hospital, Danbury Hospital, said it was treating three patients from the shooting scene. At the hospital, stunned-looking personnel in white coats looked shaken as they gathered in small groups talking about the shooting. In a corner near the gift shop, one woman comforted a weeping colleague.

In the coffee shop, a few customers finished their sandwiches at the lunch counter and the cashier wiped tears from her eyes as she rang up customers.

A nurse at the hospital, Maureen Kerins, lives close to the school and after learning of the shooting from the television hurried to the school to see if she could help. “I stood outside waiting to go in, but a police officer came out and said they didn't need any nurses so I knew it wasn’t good,'’ Ms. Kerins said.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy arrived at the scene of the shooting on Friday afternoon.

The school, located among wooded hills and suburban tracts in Fairfield County, 12 miles east of Danbury, serves kindergarten through fourth grade. The school has about 700 students.

“It’s just a little country school,'’ said Robert Place, 65, as he stood near the scene. “The look is very ‘50s or ‘60s. One floor. It’s always had a good reputation. People come to Newtown for the schools.'’

The school’s principal, Dawn Hochsprung, was reportedly one of those shot. But at the home of her daughter Cristina Hassinger, in Oakville, Conn., the family was still awaiting any news of her fate.

“We’re looking for any hope,” said Ryan Hassinger, the son-in-law of the principal. “If she’s in the hospital, any chance is better.”

He said that his wife, Cristina, 28, and “her sister are there now,” with Connecticut state troopers, and that he and other relatives were awaiting word on any news.

“I looked on Twitter and it says that she is passed,” said Mr. Hassinger. But, he added, the family was “just waiting.”

A photograph published by a local newspaper, The Newtown Bee, showed a line of children being escorted out of the school with some of the children crying.

In front of a senior center next door to the school, a 20-year-old woman was with her 4-year-old sister, who was in the school at the time of the shooting. The older woman came to pick up her younger sister along with their mother. The girl had her arms and legs wrapped around her older sister.

When a reporter asked the woman what the little girl knew of what had happened, the woman said, “Absolutely nothing, and we don’t plan to tell her anything.”

An Advent Prayer and Christmas Blessing

by Fr. Leo Patalinghug, 2011

The Lord’s coming among us

Increases joy in the hearts of God’s family.

A chance to increase our trust â€"

An opportunity to share the life of the Trinity.

The Birth of this Holy Child

A gift beyond all telling â€"

In a stable, He lays meek and mild,

In our hearts, He seeks love and indwelling.

The songs of the angels sing,

“Hosanna and Gloria in the darkest of nights!”

For the light of God this Child shall bring,

Comfort, strength and divine insight.

He shall show the ways of God,

With loving encouragement along the way â€"

In faith and hope we step towards love

And seek the glory of endless days.

May hearts burn for love of Him,

As we celebrate this season of giving.

May His peace, your soul shall sense within,

Be the grace that fills your days with blessed and joyful living.

correct. He's doing too much as it is. He needs to refocus and ponder on what he wants to do in his life. He's doing too much.

I think his mother blaming his religious change is unnecessary and is more harmful to his son. She needs to comfort her son and provide a source of love and support (emotional) rather than putting the blame on a religious philosophy or what have you.

That is my view.

I also heard from foreign expats that Norwegian representatives were coming to Bohol to examine the body themselves....since there were two Norwegians in separate incidents who ended up dead here......

As is the common practice. The first thing you should ask is if this was a homocide or of natural /accidental cause. There are over 1.3 million Boholanos living in Bohol. People die every day in our large province. Be they Filipino or foreign in origin, does not matter, life is life.

#8056
People die every day. In Chicago alone, over 100 people die everyday due to drug-related, gang-related, traffic-related causes. I should know, being a Medical Doctor, we have a lot of patients coming in due to gun shot wounds due to the rampancy of the gang activity here in Chicago and other major cities in the United States.

December 13, 2012, 02:50:46 AM
Through the week leading up to Christmas, parties of German and British soldiers began to exchange seasonal greetings and songs between their trenches; on occasion, the tension was reduced to the point that individuals would walk across to talk to their opposite numbers bearing gifts. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, many soldiers from both sides â€" as well as, to a lesser degree, from French units â€" independently ventured into "no man's land", where they mingled, exchanging food and souvenirs. As well as joint burial ceremonies, several meetings ended in carol-singing. Troops from both sides were also friendly enough to play games of football with one another.

Your Goodness has brought me safely to the beginning of this day. Behold, O Lord, I offer You my whole being and in particular all my thoughts, words and actions, together with such crosses and contradictions as I may meet with in the course of this day. Give them, O Lord, Your blessing; may Your divine Love animate them and may they tend to the greater honor and glory of Your Sovereign Majesty. Amen.

For the woman who is a wee bit critical of their man, remember these wise words from Bob Marley:

“He’s not perfect. You aren’t either, and the two of you will never be perfect. But if he can make you laugh at least once, causes you to think twice, and if he admits to being human and making mistakes, hold onto him and give him the most you can. He isn’t going to quote poetry, he’s not thinking about you every moment, but he will give you a part of him that he knows you could break. Don’t hurt him, don’t change him, and don’t expect for more than he can give. Don’t analyze. Smile when he makes you happy, yell when he makes you mad, and miss him when he’s not there. Love hard when there is love to be had. Because perfect guys don’t exist, but there’s always one guy that is perfect for you.”
