Shawarma originated in Turkey under the name döner kebab (döner means "one that turns," or çevirme, which means "turning".  It's appearance now looks different but originally, Shawarma was kebab.  Kumbaga ang kebab sa atong nahibal-an karon is "miniature" shawarma.

The Ideal Wife: 4 to 6 Years Younger - This means more children
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Hugh Hefner or Michael Douglas are just faithful followers of an evolutionary pathway. A new statistical research published in "Biology Letters" reveals that monogamous men indeed have more children if their wives are younger than them, more exactly, by 4 to 6 years.

The research team used the data from a Swedish research, applied a simple equation to the age difference of the parents and the number of offspring, and discovered that, in the case of the adults keeping monogamous relationships throughout adulthood, the highest number of children was delivered by couples in which the husband was 4 to 5.9 years older than the wife.

"Men want women younger than themselves because they are physically attractive, while women tend to prioritize a partner who can provide security and stability, and so tend to opt for older men," said co-author Martin Fieder at the University of Vienna.

Others stress that it is not about the age difference, but the age of the mother.

"The age of the mother is likely to be more important than any age difference: the older the mother, the lower her chances of having more children," said Erik Lindqvist at the Research Institute of Industrial Economics in Stockholm, Sweden.
But the measurements have showed that this factor does not count much.

"We added that factor into the calculation. The importance of the age difference didn't change," said co-author Fred Bookstein, statistician at the University of Washington.

Still, this pattern does not fit in any culture. A Finnish research published last year in "Biology Letters" investigated the case of the Saami (Laps) people of preindustrial Finland, finding that men had to marry a woman about 15 years younger.

The team gathered data from church records of 700 couples from the Utsjoki, Inari and Enontekiö settlements going from 17th to 19th century, with the purpose of taking out of the equation the child survival boosted by modern medicine. The women's age was the main factor influencing the biological success (translated in the number of surviving children): the younger the woman, the more healthy children she could deliver. An old wife or husband decreased significantly the couple's fertility.

Anyhow, I cannot imagine anyone today in the western world regarding himself/herself biologically unsuccessful with no more than 1-2 kids. On the contrary...

Breakthrough: The Molecule Causing Priapism Has Been Detected - It's the adenosine
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Figurine of Priapus discovered at Pompeii

Many men cannot maintain an erection even for a few seconds. Others cannot get rid of it. Priapism is prolonged penile erection in the absence of sexual arousal; the penis does not return to its flaccid state, even if there is no excitation, within about four hours. Even kings have been affected by this, like Carol II of Romania. A new research has connected priapism to adenosine, a molecule involved in energy transfers inside the cell.

You could say "What a lucky guy!", but the condition is often painful. Moreover, it is considered a medical emergency, which must be treated immediately by a qualified medical practitioner.

Priapism can be connected to hematological disorders, like sickle-cell disease, leukemia, thalassemia, and Fabry's disease, and neurologic ones like spinal cord lesions and spinal cord trauma (hanging causes erection victims).

Drugs too can cause priapism: intra-cavernous injections for treating impotence of (papaverine, alprostadil), antihypertensives, antipsychotics (e.g chlorpromazine, clozapine), antidepressants (trazodone), anticoagulants, cantharides. Alcohol and cocaine too can be blamed for this.

Priapism can cause damage to blood vessels of the erectile tissue, resulting in erectile dysfunction (impotence), but also ischemia, penile thrombosis (blood clotting in the penis). In severe cases, the ischemia can provoke gangrene, and penis removal is required.

This new research, carried out by a team led by Yang Xia at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston and published in "Journal of Clinic Investigation," is a breakthrough in understanding the molecular base of priapism. Male mice devoid of the protein ADA, which decomposes the adenosine molecule, were found to develop priapism, which was treated via ADA therapy.

Further investigation showed that high concentrations of adenosine provoked priapism by activating the A2B adenosine receptor in mice lacking ADA. Higher adenosine signaling via A2B adenosine receptor was also found to cause priapism in SCD transgenic mice, used as model of the disease.

"Approaches to either reduce adenosine levels or block A2B adenosine receptor activation might provide new ways to treat priapism," wrote the authors.

The name of the disease comes from the Greek god Priapus, who was punished by the other gods, for an attempted rape of a goddess, to wear a huge and useless erect penis.

Energy Drinks Destroy Your Teeth - Low buffering ability
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Man, you drink some energy beverage and you work like a machine. At least, this is what advertising says. Science presents another story about drinking too much caffeine. And a new research published in the journal "General Dentistry" shows that energy drinks can make your teeth look like those of a meth consumer. And the consume of energy drinks is continuously rising...

Previous studies showed that acidity in beverages like soda can cause tooth erosion, due to the effect of acid on the teeth enamel, which can eventually cause teeth decay. No matter if diet or regular, ice tea or root beer, when drunk daily, they are important factors in provoking the erosion of the teeth enamel.

The pH (the measure of acidity) level of soft drinks is not the only element involved in this intricate process. Beverages can have a "buffering capacity," an ability to neutralize acidity.

The research team investigated acidity levels of five popular drinks. The lowest buffering capacity was found in "high energy" and sports drinks, making them the strongest potential teeth destroyers.

These drinks are increasingly consumed by adolescents and young adults, who put their teeth under a permanent attack of these acids, fact aggravated by the porosity of the enamel in immature teeth. Even specialists say that, nowadays, they treat more patients in their teens to 20s for tooth erosion.

"They drink a great deal more sodas, sports drinks, and energy drinks. The results, if not treated early and if extensive, can lead to very severe dental issues that would require full mouth rehabilitation to correct," said Dr. Raymond Martin, spokesperson of the Academy of General Dentistry.

Dentists even come with some advices:

- Use a straw and position it at the back of the mouth in order to avoid the contact of the liquid with your teeth.

- Wash the mouth after consuming acid drinks.

- The best option is to limit the consume of sodas, sports and energy drinks.

Obesity Strikes the Boobs - Higher inflammation due to the fat tissue
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Large women may pride on their huge breasts. But size is exactly the cause of their end. A new research published in the journal of "Clinical Cancer Research" shows that overweight or obese women with breast cancer experiencea more aggressive condition and have lower survival rates.

"The more obese a patient is, the more aggressive the disease. We are learning that the fat tissue may increase inflammation that leads to more aggressive disease," said co-author Dr. Massimo Cristofanilli, associate professor of medicine in the Department of Breast Medical Oncology at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

The researchers monitored 606 female subjects with locally advanced breast cancer and classified them using their body mass index (weight by height) into 3 categories : normal/underweight (maximum 24.9), overweight (25 to 30) or obese (over 30).

5 years later, the survival rate was 56.8% in the case of the obese women, 56.3% for overweight women and 67.4% for those with a BMI of maximum 24.9. The 10-year survival rate resulted to be 42.7% for obese subjects, 41.8% in the case of overweight women and 56.5 % for normal/underweight women.

Inflammatory breast cancer, linked to worse survival rates compared to non-inflammatory breast cancer, represented 45% of the cases of obese women, 30% in overweight women and just 1 % in normal/underweight women.

The recurrence of the cancer was also more likely in BMI over 25. In 5 years, breast cancer was experienced again by 50.8% of obese women, but only by 38.5% of normal weight women. 10 years later, 58% of the obese women had breast cancer again, compared to 45.4% of the normal weight women.

"Physicians need to pay close attention to breast cancer patients because commonly used drugs, such as tamoxifen, tend to increase weight gain during treatment. Following the nausea, our patients tend to overeat, which further increases their risk of weight gain. We need to implement lifestyle modifications interventions and develop better methods to follow these patients closely," Cristofanilli said.

Men Skipping Sleep Turn Obese - It's about hunger hormone
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Lazy people should sleep more. But how can a hard working man be an obese person? A new Japanese research shows that men who sleep less than five hours a night are exposed to turning obese and to having high levels of glucose in the blood, which is the first step
towards diabetes.

"Lack of sleep triggers a hormone in the blood which stimulates the appetite (ghrelin, the most powerful appetite stimulant yet discovered). It increases a sense of hunger as well as an appetite for high-calorie food," said lead author, Nihon University medical department associate professor Yoshitaka Kaneita.

The team looked at 21,693 men in 1999 and made a follow up in 2006. Average weight men in 1999 were 1.36 times more likely to turn obese if they slept less than 5 hours a night on average in the subsequent 7 years compared with the category of those who slept more. The likelihood of the short-sleepers to have high blood sugar levels increased by 1.27 times.

There is no similar research made for women. And the recommended daily sleeping time for an adult is 8 hours.

Still, a research made at Northwestern University in 2006 found that children who sleep more will store less body fat than children who sleep less, and that the former are less likely than the latter to be overweight five years later.

Children with more sleep hours presented lower BMI (body mass index) and later in their development they were less likely to be overweight than those who slept less. The results were similar even when putting in the equation factors like BMI, parents’ income and education, race and ethnicity.

The team found that one more hour of sleep translated in a decrease of children’s risk of being overweight from 36 % to 30 %, while for older children the drop was from 34 % to 30 %.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends that children aged 5 to 12 should sleep 10 to 11 hours per night, while teenagers 8 to 9 hours, but the research encountered situations when, on weeknights, 7-year-olds had less than 10 hours of sleep, while by the age of 14, weekday sleep time dropped to 8.5 hours.

You may not like the first step (a=x). But, we do this kind of thing all the time in Algebra. It's true for plenty of a's and x's. Assume that a is the number of ears on my head, and x  is the number of ears on your head. In that case a=x (if a is not equal to x, forgive me for mentioning it).
