Jokes and Humor / Re: joke of the day..

Dear Folks,

Here she goes again. Gloria has set aside P500 million for
fertilizers. This must be another Glo-joke that Gloria continues to humor
the poor with. The last time she allocated money for fertilizers, Joke-joke
Bolante pulled the P3-billion "fertilizer scam" prior to the
2004 presidential election. Now, who is going to do the hocus-pocus this
time for you know whom?

By the way, Gloria declared that she is going to appoint a
Deputy Ombudsman for Agriculture. Ha ha ha... Perhaps, it would be better
if she appoints a Super Ombudsman for Malacanang where all the strings were
allegedly being pulled from. Of course, that would only be another Glo-joke
because who in the Devil's name would investigate Gloria's people including
members of the First Family?

April 06, 2008, 09:38:30 AM
Description:
This video is about the rare color of the Filipino that is
seldom seen by the naked eye because of the turmoil and the extreme
poverty. It can only be seen by the heart. A heart for God and a heart
for country.

Our ancestors have sealed their conviction with blood. We are called
not only to die but to live for our motherland.

The subjects of my canvas are these countrymen with rare colors.
Jesus lifts up the tattered flag of a country that has been ripped
apart for 400 years of exploitation, poverty and strife. Though it
remains a cradle of life and abundance, its people suffer of
deprivation and are continuously being raped of their identity, pride,
and culture. What remains of the race is abandoned and left for dead in
the desert.

The pain and suffering of his people are etched on the countenance of
Jesus. But His stance is upright and his grip is firm. We are in His
love and mercy that unites us, strengthens us from the shackles of
fear, helplessness and hopelessness.

Vote Tubbataha & Chocolate Hills in Wonders' Search
Posted by Ryan Prader at 6:21 PM
04 Mar 2008
source: angat-pinoy.blogspot.com

We are urging all Filipinos around the world to vote for the Tubbataha Reef of Palawan and Chocolate Hills of Bohol in the ongoing worldwide search for the "New Seven Wonders of Nature."

In the latest global online poll, Tubbataha Reef's position has fallen four spots down in the last three weeks. From 28th slipped to 32nd place as of Monday. While Chocolate Hills improved its position from 78th to 66th place.

Both natural wonders are competing among 77 official candidates for the New Seven Wonders of Nature competition.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the non-profit New Seven Wonders Foundation, which also undertook the "New Seven Wonders of the World" search that ended last year, is organizing the online search. The list of nominees and the mechanics for voting are posted on the poll's official website while latest ranking of candidates can be viewed online: http://www.new7wonders.com/nature/en/liveranking/

Voting is until Dec. 31, 2008.

After the voting, the top 77 nominees will be submitted to a panel of experts that will put together a shortlist of 21 finalists by January 2009.

A second round of popular voting for the 21 finalists will then ensue until the end of 2009.

Chocolate Hills
The Top Seven nominees will be officially declared the "New Seven Wonders of Nature" by the year 2010.

Other nominees to the search are: Mt. Everest of Nepal, Amazon River and Amazon Forest of South America, Niagara Falls of North America, Grand Canyon of the United States, Galapagos Islands of Ecuador, Great Barrier Reef of Australia, Mt. Kilimanjaro of Tanzania, and Mount Blanc, more popularly known as the "Alps," of France and Italy, among others.

Tubbataha Reef is an atoll coral reef found in the Sulu Sea. It is a marine sanctuary protected as Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park (TRNMP).

The reef is composed of two atolls, North and South Reef; and each reef has a single small islet that protrudes from the water.

Over a thousand species, including many that are declared endangered, can be found in the Tubbataha Reef. These include manta rays, lionfish, tortoises, clownfish and sharks.

The Chocolate Hills is an unusual geological formation in Bohol, Philippines. It is composed of around 1,268 perfectly cone-shaped hills, all about the same size, spread over an area of more than 50 sq km The hills are covered in green grass that turns brown during the dry season, giving them the name "Chocolate Hills."

Eating insects for food, snacking on crickets, snakes, baby nestling sparrows, mice, scorpion soup.

Crickets on sticks - snacks in Beijing

Entomophagy is the habit of eating insects as food. While it is common for many insects, birds and animals to indulge themselves, did you know that people in some parts of the world consider insects a very tasty delicacy?

If you live in Beijing or Bangkok, for example, you might fancy a taste of crickets. Or maybe you would prefer baby nestling sparrows, mice, snakes, or maybe a bowl of scrumptious scorpion soup?

These are all on the menu, as you can see from our pictures here. One man's meat is another man's poison, as they say. So, have a nice day. And enjoy your lunch.

Words To Live By

Accept that some days you're the pigeon,
And some days you're the statue.

Always keep your words soft and sweet,
Just in case you have to eat them.

Always read stuff that will make you
Look good if you die in the middle of it.

Drive carefully. It's not only cars
That can be recalled by their maker.

Eat a live toad in the morning and
Nothing worse will happen to you for the rest of the day.

If you can't be kind,
At least have the decency to be vague.

If you lend someone $20,
And never see that person again,
It was probably worth it.

It may be that your sole purpose in life
Is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Never buy a car you can't push.

Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time,
Because then you don't have a leg to stand on.

Nobody cares if you can't dance well.
Just get up and dance.

The early worm gets eaten by the bird,
So sleep late.

When everything's coming your way,
You're in the wrong lane.

Birthdays are good for you;
The more you have, the longer you live.

Ever notice that the people who are late
Are often much jollier than the people
Who have to wait for them?

If ignorance is bliss,
Why aren't more people happy?

You may be only one person in the world,
But you may also be the world to one person.

Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

Don't cry because it's over;
Smile because it happened.

We could learn a lot from crayons:
Some are sharp, some are pretty,
Some are dull, some have weird names,
And all are different colors;
But they all have to learn to live in the same box.

A truly happy person is one
Who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

Happiness comes through doors
You didn't even know you left open.

Have an awesome day, and know
That someone has thought about you today....

The Power of Your Vision
By Jef Menguin

There is more to us than we know. If we can be made to see it, perhaps for the rest of our lives we will be unwilling to settle for less. --Kurt Hahn

I thank God for giving me the opportunity to stand before you today. It is a great blessing to be given that chance to speak before school principals, teachers, barangay captains, and parents. Today, I hope you will claim your power to build the great schools-- communities where your children, the hopes of this country, will be formed and nurtured. Years from now, when all your dreams have come true, I will be grateful for the chance to share with you this moment.

Earlier, we talked about why all stakeholders must play active roles in the School Improvement Plan. I am happy that at this early, you see the need to change the face of our schools. In step number 1, we gathered, organized, and analyzed the data about our schools. The next step of utmost importance that the impact of steps three to seven depend on it. The next step defines the success of individuals, of schools, of a company, town, province and country. I say that our understanding of the next step explains why most people are poor and few are rich, why some people go through life not knowing what to do, and some few are passionate, persistent, and principled. Without a close examination of the next step, we will go back to where we used to be.

Our next step is craft or revisit our vision, mission, and values. Dear principals, I know that you were mandated to post your mission-vision-values statements in the facade of your schools. How many of you can recite your mission-vision-values statements? (Ask for a show of hands) I won't be surprised if very few of you can recite your vision. I surveyed people and asked them about the vision of their company. Five of a hundred can. I did not ask them to explain. And this is the third time that I am leading this workshop. The first two affirmed the obvious. Most of our schools have mission-vision-values statements. They complied. Yes, they just complied.

Let us now examine the Power of Vision.

Vision is your picture of the future. It is your BIG picture of the future. You have with you your vision statements. Please read it now. Do you see the big picture? Can you imagine it? From your Vision Statements can you see your Great School? What kind of students do you have? How committed and equipped are your teachers and school leaders? Do you have involved parents, barangay captain, mayors, and NGO's? Are you excited and inspired to make that vision come true?

When your vision is clear, you can become your destiny. I have seen how the power of vision in the lives of people I met. My study of world history educated me that "throughout the centuries there were men who took first steps, down new roads, armed with nothing but their own vision." I am now reminded of that beautiful girl who had grown up working in the palace with the ultimate goal of regaining her family's honor, and clearing the names of her parents who both worked in the palace and were framed up.

I met a lot of teachers who said that their students cannot make it in life because they are poor. But poverty has always been here. And history has been showing us it is not poverty that has been preventing us to reach our goal.

This girl was first trained to work as a palace kitchen servant. She worked hard to learn all the skills needed to become Chief of Kitchen. She excelled under the strict mentorship of Lady Han (who happened to be her mother's best friend). But life was not meant to be easy for this girl. Her mentor Lady Han competed with Lady Choi for the post of Chief of Kitchen. Lady Choi together with her neice Keum-Young, made life miserable for this girl since she was helping her mentor get the post. Very much like how some people work in our country, Lady Choi wouldn't allow Lady Han get the post of Chief of the Kitchen. Her brother supplied the needs of the palace. And again, like how some our politicians worked, overpriced all the supplies.

Let me cut the story short. This girl after she was framed up together with Lady Han, imprisoned, punished, and banished from the palace, strove and became the greatest and the first lady doctor of Korea. Her name was Jang Geum of the Koreanovela Jewel in the Palace. Every night, this girl had 40 percent of Filipino TV viewers watching her.

Vision is not something you plastered on the facade of your school building. It is not something written on the company manual, or a mantra recited by leaders. Vision is that place or state of being that your heart longs for. I realized that Jang Geum did not really intend to be the Chief of the Kitchen. That was the dream of her mother for her. She worked to make the dream of her beloved mother come true. If you have watched the Koreanovela, you would have observed that before she accepted the role of a doctor, she requested that she be made the Chief of the Kitchen for a day. When she had already fulfilled her mother's vision, she fulfilled hers. Everytime she cooked, she was not only after the taste or the appearance of the food. She was after the benefits the food could bring to the health of people. She was a doctor even before the title was bestowed on her. Visions are written in the heart.

From that story of Jang Geum, we can also understand the characteristics of vision: has no limits, a stretch, positive, better than before, shared, and owned.

Vision has no limits. God has given us the capacity to see great things. But along the way, we allow the narrow vision of people around us to dictate what we cannot do. This reminds me of what Spud Webb said in one shoe brand commercial. Spud Webb was a very quick guard who, despite his height, played 12 seasons in the NBA and became famous for his spectacular ballhandling skills, his jumping ability and his incredible dunks! In the commercial he said that he did not allow people to tell him what he cannot do. He showed them what he can do.

But sometimes people around us build our limits. And many of us allow them. How many times have we heard of parents telling their children,"you cannot go to college because we are poor". Why that is wrong? That is wrong because we know of parents who sent their 12 children to school and had them all finish a course. That is wrong because we know of people who came from the most miserable circumstances, like being orphaned at the age of ten with five other siblings to feed, and who now manage their own companies. We know that that is wrong because some of you here have proven that poverty is not a hindrance to a desired life.

Tradition also limits our vision. Some people think that School Based Management cannot be done. They said that it has not been done before here in the Philippines. All great things in the world had not been done before until a crazy soul said it can be done, and worked for it, and made it happened. Some people are living this country because they believe that we have no hope. That is not true. That simply say that they don't see the vision of beautiful tomorrow in this country. What they lack is not only the love for this country. They have limited vision. When people say that this country has no hope, look into your children. You will know that they all got it wrong.

According to Henri Matisse, there is nothing more difficult for a truly creative painter than to paint a rose, because before he can do so he has first to forget all the roses that were ever painted. I think the same is true with building a great school. We have to first forget all the "have been there, done that" way of thinking and have a new one.

Vision is a stretch, and something bigger and better than before. Sometimes, that is expressed, sometimes not. When JFK said that man will land on the moon before the end of the decade (70's), he was expressing something that was beyond the expectations of many. Some people might think us insane for dreaming big. But it is more insane not to. What is your dream for your school? Dream big. NO! Dream bigger. Let us clean the cobweb of doubts in our mind.

Vision is positive. This is not so obvious. Why? All you need is to read the newspapers everyday and you will know that we always expect the worst to for this country, no thanks to our political leaders. I wonder what kind of vision our children develop everytime we talked about corruption in government. Don't get me wrong. I don't mean that we should play blind to every anomalies in the government. I simply mean that we should not lose sight of the positive vision. From where I stand, I know that we can all contribute to the positive future when we build positive vision in our homes, our school, and our barangay. We cannot simply let our politicians decide for our future. We are also leaders. And we can create the pocket of greatness in every home, in every school, in every barangay. To visualize the worst is not vision. It is simply masochism. Do you want to know my positive vision? I see that you will continue your commitment to the education of the young, and you will work for the beatiful tommorow. Do you like that vision?

Vision is shared and supported. That is why we have the barangay officials, the parents, teachers, and principals here. In the past, we thought that the success of an organizations depend on "visionary leaders". But visionary leaders know that nothing can be successful unless a vision, that picture of beautiful, bigger, and better tomorrow is shared and supported. That is why they made sure that we understand the pictures they painted.

But a school of today to be truly strong must not depend on the mind of one district supervisor or school principal. Everyone's future is involved here--yes, our future and our children's future! Therefore, it is imperative that when we revisit or craft our school vision, we must involve everyone, most specially our students.

Vision is owned. We are seldom happy with a vision dictated on us by others. Unless we own a vision, we cannot put our heart into it. A vision is not something that a principal should start writing one day simply because she was told by DepEd to submit one.

You need to sit down, involve all the stakeholders, and craft a vision that you can all say you own. Don't trouble yourself with the right words. Many well-written visions sound good only to those consultants who wrote them, but have no meaning to the people who are supposed to make them happen. A vision you own always sounds better.

Believe me, miracles happen when you group together to create the picture of better tomorrow. Vision will give you the impulse to make the picture your own.

Revisit your vision, or create one today.

Dear parents what are your visions for your children? Do you want them to study in a school where four students have to share for one textbook? Had you envisioned to send them to a school with a library room with no books inside? What kind of lessons do you want them to learn from you, from their teachers, from your community? Do you want them to learn independence, self-reliance, love of country, and care for humanity?

Have you told your kids that the only wealth you can provide them is education? What kind of education are we providing them.

Our dear barangay officials, what are your visions for your community? I believe you all have been to school too. And you have children too. Do you like the picture we have now? What kind of future awaits your community under your leadership?

Dear principals and teachers, what are your visions for your pupils? Five years from now, do you still see 70 of them squeezing their bodies in that one small room? You are with them every day, do you like the picture we are building in their impressionable minds? When was the last time you asked them this question," What do you want to be when you grow up?"

What do you want your school to be five years from now? Let us think for a moment.... Do you want your school to

develop creative, and globally competitive students,
have committed, passionate, and highly qualified teachers,
have supportive LGUs,
live in a healthy and happy environment,
be the best in the world...

Keep on dreaming. Some people say,"walang bayad ang mangarap." That is not true. Dreaming is expensive. With dreaming comes risk.

Think of Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Victor Frankl, and our own Jose Rizal. Think of those people you know who committed their lives to their dreams. Yes, from them you will know that dreams are expensive. You have to invest your life to a dream.

Think of Helen Keller despite the odds went to school, authored books, and devoted her life to learning and inspiring people. She was blind. She was deaf. And she had vision.

Before I end our discussion on vision, do you know of people who don't know what they can be or wanted to be ten years, five years, or two years from now? How about you? Friends, remember this: when you have no vision, you are blind.

You can accomplish great things for your schools. You must first dream, then visualize, then plan... believe... act! This is what the School Improvement Plan is all about.

When you dream nothing, you get nothing. Because we all come here, I believe we are all to something. Big. Positive. Better. And beautiful.

Technology / Chikka and the internet renaissance
March 30, 2008, 12:33:51 PM
Chikka Asia, the company that launched the world's first mobile IM to integrate SMS and multimedia capabilities in 2001, has introduced Chikka 2.0.

The new Chikka features browser-based messaging and other mobile functionalities that adopt the new wave of Web technologies and applications that use the Internet as platform â€" Web 2.0.

"Our own revolution is inspired by this 'Internet renaissance,' but is more significantly imbued with the best of mobile services we have been enabling for the last six years, for some of the world's most demanding mobile markets," said Chito Bustamante, chief operating officer of Chikka Asia Inc.

Chikka 2.0 features version 4 of the Chikka Messenger which is interoperable with Google Talk and now also connects to Yahoo!, MSN, AIM, and ICQ.

The site will also allow the delivery of mobile content and mobile call credits, all directly accessed from the Web.

Chikka 2.0 will also support social networking and user-generated content (UGC), hallmarks of the new breed of popular sites on Web 2.0.

Users will be able to set up personal profiles, upload photos and videos, or blog within their Chikka profile page.

"Chikka 2.0 now addresses mobile communities with fast and reliable connectivity for services that include the transfer of mobile call credits, the delivery of mobile content such as tones and images, and of course, SMS and MMS," Bustamante said.

"These new mobile capabilities are expected to make popular online communities even more vibrant. We envision Internet and mobile communities uniting like never before," he added.

Chikka's wireless applications are currently deployed through the networks of over 50 mobile carriers in countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Spain, India, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand , Singapore and Hong Kong.

A loyal community of more than 38 million users is built around the original Chikka Messenger's unbeatable mobile connectivity.

Internet giant Yahoo Inc. has introduced new features for its free Web-based e-mail service, including the ability to send text messages directly to cell phones.

The service, which will take up to six weeks to roll out, will initially be available in the Philippines, the United States, Canada and India, the company said.

"We're giving you the right way to connect at the right time with right person," said Yahoo vice president John Kremer, whose two preteen sons vastly prefer text and instant messages to e-mail.

Yahoo doesn't charge for sending and receiving text messages, but mobile phone users may be charged fees by carriers that provide their services.

Yahoo's PC-to-text service seems to compete directly with the services provided by Philippines-based Chikka.com , but it was not immediately clear what impact it would have on the local company.

The changes to Yahoo Mail come amid fierce competition among providers of free, Web-based e-mail services. Yahoo and Microsoft Corp.'s Hotmail have long dominated the niche, but Google Inc.'s Gmail has grown quickly since its introduction in April 2004.

In February, Yahoo announced that it would provide unlimited storage space, and earlier this month Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft said Hotmail would increase free storage from two to five gigabytes. Time Warner Inc.'s AOL, the fourth largest e-mail provider, began offering unlimited storage last summer. Google provides nearly three gigabytes.

Sunnyvale-based Yahoo bills the changes as the most significant overhaul of Yahoo Mail since its launch in 1997. The new version replaces a one-year-old beta program and adds new features, including text messaging, a more comprehensive e-mail search engine and an easier to read and edit contacts database.

Yahoo is making its upgraded service available to the 254 million users of its e-mail service as it competes with rivals Google and Microsoft for "eye balls" that can be parlayed into advertising revenues.

Improvements include making the service faster and enabling users to have instant message conversations with people using Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger service.

The new version allows users to click on a contact and then select whether to send that person an e-mail, instant message or text message. You could send an e-mail or instant message if you know the recipient is at the computerâ€"or a text message if the recipient is on the road with a cell phone.

"This gives people the ability to reach anybody in their contact database anytime," said Michael McGuire, vice president of research at industry analysis firm Gartner Inc. "For good or evil, it's going to be much easier for anybody to get a hold of you."

Users who do not want the upgradesâ€"or whose computers are too slow to handle themâ€"can opt to remain with the current version, which Yahoo will call "Classic."

"Consumer inertia is a powerful force," McGuire said. "You are not going to get everybody wanting to learn the new one."

McGuire said the enhancements add value to Yahoo's e-mail.

"These are all important features they have to keep adding to the platform in the face of Hotmail, Gmail, or whatever," McGuire said.

"But this is more than keeping up with competitors. They have added value."

WikiPilipinas an encyclopedia for Pinoys
By Tony Alvarez

Having a site with contents purely dedicated for the Filipinos is very uplifting especially if it touches issues and ideas not known to many. What more if the site is made by Filipinos, for the Filipinos and for people who want to know more about Filipinos? In this time where colonial mentality is rife, it is hard to find Filipinos boasting about their third world nation to the first world countries all over the world. Truth be told, Filipinos who put their fellowmen nowadays in pedestal are very rare so I salute them for keeping their Pinoy spirit alive and soaring.

Then came WikiPilipinas.org and everything else seem to fall into its own place. WikiPilipinas describes itself as the free and hip-web based encyclopedia of the Philippines and it hopes to bring in as many volunteers to take part in its “knowledge revolution,” to foster nationalism and help the country make an international niche abroad and gain cultural recognition of the Philippines.

With the 12 portals in the Philippines, anybody with a particular interest on a specific topic will surely find his/her place in the site. Are you the kind of person who is very vigilant with the country's politics and all the issues surrounding it? Then the Government and Politics portal is definitely right for you. And as a bonus, you'll also get to know the Top 10 Richest athletes in the Philippines together with the Most Controversial ones.

Jilted swan returns to true love - a swan-shaped pedal boat
by Gulliver

A black swan dumped by her lover has been reunited with her old flame - a giant pedal boat in the shape of a white swan she had been pining for all winter.

Petra made headlines all around the world in 2006 when she grew so fond of the plastic boat she could not bear to be parted from it.

The romance between the odd couple blossomed after German zoo officials in the town of Muenster released Petra on a local lake next to the boat.

She became so besotted with her pedal boat love that she refused to leave its side, even refusing to mingle with the other swans.

The bizarre love affair attracted worldwide attention and a busy tourism industry built up at the Aasee Lake where local shops sold souvenirs of Petra and her pedalo lover.

Last winter Petra refused to fly to warmer climes so she and the vessel were taken into Muenster zoo and housed in the heated enclosure.

Over the past few months the rare Australian black swan struck up a relationship with a real-life German white swan she met at the zoo.

Zookeepers thought that she was all set when the pair started building a nest together.

The real white swan, nicknamed Bruce, was besotted with Petra and they were inseparable, according to zoo staff.

But that romance was short lived and went on the rocks last weekend when Bruce ditched Petra for another. Her unfaithful mate decided to fly off and seek the company of other black swans.

Since then the heartbroken Petra has been swimming around in an agitated state and zoo officials had to do something to calm her down.

This weekend zookeepers decided to reunite her with her beloved boat, which had been returned to its owner only last week.

They are hoping Petra's return to the lake that she shared with the boat for nearly two years will boost up the lovesick bird's spirits.

When they took her away from the boat, she seemed to lose her way, they said. Now that she is reunited with her "old love" they hope she will soon feel better again and regain her sense of security.

Inspiration & Hope / Yours to create
March 30, 2008, 11:40:29 AM
If anyone has been able to do it before, you can do it too. If no one has ever done it, you can be the first.
What seems out of your reach now, gets closer the moment you begin working toward it. There is a way to achieve what you choose, when you commit yourself to continue taking action.

If you could have it all instantly, it would not be worth having. For the real value of accomplishment is in the accomplishing.

You are smart, and motivated, and flexible and resourceful. When you decide to make it happen, you will surely find your way there.

Focus on the reason for doing it, the deepest reason you can find within yourself. That will keep you going as long as necessary.

Achievement is yours to create, when it's something to which you're truly committed. Get it done, and know the special joy of making the world a better place.

Philippine Showcase / How to succeed as an OFW
March 30, 2008, 11:36:02 AM
There are many Overseas Filipino Workers who work abroad for many years but are not successful and no investments were acquired by the time that they have already retired.
The worst situation is that there are some OFWs who have been in an accident overseas which prevented them from working again. Regardless of working in or outside the Philippines, Filipino worker should know how to value his labor and sacrifices while aiming for his dreams.
The following tips are worth reading that will serve as guides for typical Overseas Filipino Workers. Information given is based  from the experiences of other fellow Overseas Filipino Workers.

1. Do not spend too much of your income. Not because you are earning big now and you have extra money, you are going to spend too much for your vices and unnecessary things. Some Filipinos who are only on a temporary working visa are buying luxury and brand new cars which I think is not necessary. If your earnings are high, it should be okay but I know some Overseas Filipino Workers who buy expensive and brand new cars but do not have any investment on important properties yet. They could not even eat proper meals anymore as luxury is more important to them. They are not thinking that their job abroad is just temporary, anytime they can be sent back home if some unpleasant situation happened such as war, bankruptcy, slow economy or as I have mentioned above, when they become paralyzed and couldn’t work anymore after an accident.

2. Always keep some income for savings. Save some of your income in Philippine banks as well as banks in the country where you work. And because you will stay abroad for about two years or more, it’s better that you’ll keep your money in a term of savings where you can earn more interest such as Time Deposit or Funds. Some Philippine banks offer special savings program for Overseas Filipino Workers and their beneficiaries.

3. Obtain pension plans for retirement, savings fund, children's educational plan, health insurance or life insurance. Get more if you can, although you already have the OWWA Benefits or Social Security Insurance (SSS) or Pag-Ibig, it is also better to get another one from private insurance company.
It is not always safe to work anywhere, you will never know if you can have an accident in the future that will prevent you to engage in any kind of jobs again. Having some insurance is always a big help.

4. Once you start receiving your salary and suppose you have no debts to pay anymore, make sure you would invest in a property first. If you will buy some property, its’ value does not go down; it's always accumulating or increasing every year. House and Lot or Lot is the best investment of all.

5. If you want to build a house, unless you already got many houses, it is better to build an apartment first to have some additional income. Your wife/husband is in Philippines can take care of your property in case you want them to be a commercial or residential apartment for rent.
If you are earning from the rental of your apartment, you may now save your income and with some additional money from the last few years of working abroad, you can build a new house again for your family.

6. Do not give so much allowance to your beneficiaries that could only make them spend your remittance for unnecessary things as well. You should let them know how hard it is to work in a foreign land and earn that money that you are sending for them. You should let them know how to spend wisely as well.
Do not stay quiet or ashamed to tell and explain how hard it is to work as Overseas Filipino Workers abroad to your family. If they do not know about your real situation, they would just think that you are just "collecting" money while you're walking on the road. So, they would just spend your remittance on things that are unnecessary.

7. If you cannot bring your family while you are working abroad and your vacation is not yet due, why not try bringing them to your country of work. Sometimes, you need to spend a little to maintain the relationship and bonding of your family.

8. If you are on vacation, do not spend all your savings thinking that you still have a job in abroad upon returning there. It is not always like that. I have someone that I knew, who had bought brand new car, spent most of his savings while on vacation but by the time that this fellow overseas Filipino worker is now going back to work abroad, his employer's company suddenly closed. He did not know that the company was already failing and facing bankruptcy.

9. Rather than spending too much of your savings on less important things, just improve your skills. You will never know that your current job will still be on demand after one or two years. You should try to be knowledgeable of other types of skills and profession.
If you are a carpenter, acquire some skills that could help you to become a contractor just in case you want to have your own business and would like to get your own carpenter to do the jobs.

10. Do not start your own business if you do not have any idea about the business. Do not just listen with other people’s suggestions, think about it. It is not because having an Internet Cafe is one of the good businesses these days, you will engage yourself with that same business even you do not know anything about computers.
If you have an experience in carpentry jobs, start business that is related to carpentry such as cabinet making, construction materials retail, painting etc. Do not engage in other kinds of business unless you have also experienced it before. This is not the proper way to do business. Put up a business that you are familiar with and that you most love to do.

Tips and advice above are just guide and suggestions for Filipino Workers. It's still up to the person if he/she would like to follow other people's suggestions. Not anything that had happened to you is other people's responsibility it's your own responsibility. ..

Jokes and Humor / Re: joke of the day..
March 30, 2008, 11:30:42 AM
Dear Folks,

Recently, Gloria Arroyo said that she "expects a rough patch
ahead for the Philippines as global economic growth slows amid soaring oil
and rice prices." So, to mitigate the "pain of a deteriorating global
economy and the accompanying rise in prices," she is going to build more
roads, bridges, ports and educational facilities to serve as a "buffer"
kuno. Whoa! This must be another Glojoke. Since when did building roads
mitigate a "deteriorating global economy"? If Gloria was going build roads
as expensive as the 2.2-kilometer Diosdado Macapagal Highway -- which
was built at 1.1 BILLION PESOS -- it's going to take TRILLIONS of taxpayers'
money to build them! At 60% ovrerpricing, it's going to make a few people
multi-billionaires. Cong Dadong must be turning in his grave right now.
