Philippine Laws / Victims found trapped in ferry
June 25, 2008, 10:54:30 AM
Wednesday, June 25, 2008

Navy divers pulled out bodies yesterday from the capsized Princess of the Stars and found more inside the ill-fated ship, confirming the worst fears of distraught relatives of missing passengers.

Rough seas have hindered search and rescue operations, although divers had earlier been able to knock on the hull â€" without getting any response. They were finally able to enter the upturned ship yesterday.

“There are many bodies trapped inside,” said Navy spokesman Lt. Col. Edgard Arevalo.

Coast Guard Commodore Luis Tuazon said two bodies were retrieved near the entrance of the vessel, and one of the bodies appeared to be that of a crew because it was still in uniform and held a radio. Frogmen recounted seeing bodies floating face up inside the ship.

The divers also spoke of difficulty in  extricating the bodies â€" some from a tangle of cables â€" because they were in advanced stage of decomposition and might tear apart easily.

“Our divers were able to get in early this morning. They were able to pull out two bodies so far,” Tuazon said.

Princess of the Stars sank in rough waters off Romblon at the height of typhoon “Frank” (international codename Fengshen) on Saturday. The vessel, with 862 passengers and 121 crew, was on its way to Cebu from Manila when it ran into the path of the typhoon while seeking shelter.

Arevalo said the divers couldn’t provide much details about the dead found inside the ill-fated vessel because of poor visibility.

“It was too dark inside to tell how many were children or elderly, but they did say they were mostly floating and they were apparently trapped inside,” he said. Asked if there might be survivors trapped in air pockets inside the vessel, Arevalo said “miracles do happen.”

Arevalo said the waters were still quite rough, making it difficult to enter and exit the sunken vessel.

“What complicates our problem is how to extricate the bodies. One of the ways they are thinking about is to weigh them down so they can take them out from the bottom of the ship. Another option is to cut the hull,” he said.

He refused to speculate on how many bodies might be inside the vessel but recalled survivors’ accounts that the vessel sank so quickly that many people were unable to escape.

He said it was possible some passengers could have survived initially, but the roiling seas had kept rescuers at bay too long and suffocation may have claimed some lives.

Arevalo said that while some of the bodies had life vests, “it seems the passengers hesitated from jumping into the turbulent waters” because “it happened too suddenly,” referring to survivors’ accounts of the ship quickly listing and going down in a half-hour or less.

“(With the life vests) you will survive for a few hours, but in time, the air will run out,” he added.

Coast Guard chief Vice Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo said about 20 divers were at the scene and were expected to be joined by frogmen from a US Navy ship coming from Guam. Another US Navy ship, the USS Stockham, arrived from Japan to assist in the search and rescue efforts.

Tamayo said the divers had broken windows and used every other gap they could find to get inside the 23,824-ton Princess of the Stars, which has only one end jutting from the water off Sibuyan island.

Coast guard divers had been waiting for the seas to calm down before entering the hull of the ferry.

The Coast Guard, said spokesman Armand Balilo, is still focused on search and rescue and that it’s up to on-scene commander Commodore Cecille Chen to shift to search and retrieval.

“We have been receiving calls from relatives who said they have already been contacted by a relative who was on board the ship,” Balilo said.

“It is possible that many people were trapped in the ship and maybe many of them are still in the cabins,” he said.

A US navy P-3 Orion surveillance aircraft, which had also been ordered to join the search, had been flying over the area.

“The US navy ship USS Stockham will assist us in our efforts,” Tuazon said.

“It’s very dark inside. There is a need for us to install underwater lighting equipment in order for our divers to penetrate each and every compartment of the vessel,” Tuazon said.

Residents from nearby Sibuyan island gathered along the shoreline to watch the grim retrieval operation. The smell of diesel hung in the air.

Earlier, a helicopter from the USS Stockham spotted 12 bodies floating near Masbate island, at least 70 km east of Sibuyan, local radio reported. It was unclear if they were from the Princess of the Stars.

Oil spill feared

Fears of a massive oil spill have complicated efforts to recover bodies from inside the sunken Princess of the Stars.

A slick of oil had formed around the ship, but local officials said it did not represent a leak.

Although divers found no sign of life when they inspected the capsized ferry off central Sibuyan Island, Vice President Noli de Castro said he was “still hopeful.”

At a press conference in San Fernando, Sibuyan, De Castro said some people may have survived in an air pocket inside the ship.

“Who knows, we might see a miracle. We still believe in miracles,” he said.

But he said one of the problems hampering the recovery operations was fuel inside the ferry’s tanks.

“If we siphon off the fuel the ferry could tilt and fall over (spilling oil), complicating rescue and recovery efforts further,” he said.

De Castro appealed to the public for patience, saying that the recovery operations “will not be as quick as we thought.”

“The important thing is we do things correctly,” he said.

“If we do it quickly, there might be a bigger disaster,” De Castro told reporters after inspecting the rescue operations.

The ferry is sitting upside down on a coral reef off Sibuyan island with the bottom of the hull exposed above the water.

Reporters saw oil spill booms being positioned around the ferry as divers began removing bodies.

De Castro said additional diving supplies had been brought in and that they hoped to eventually deploy 40 divers, including possibly 10 from USS Stockham.

National Disaster Coordinating Council head Anthony Golez said 57 people had survived Saturday’s sinking, one of the worst maritime disasters in the country’s history. â€" With Roel Pareño, Evelyn Macairan, Ed Amoroso, and AP

Philippine Laws / Sulpicio andam Mobayad
June 24, 2008, 03:36:40 PM
Tuesday, June 24, 2008

(Edwin Ian Melecio ug Bong Soriano)

Philippine Laws / ‘No sign of Life’

It lay in the water with its belly up, and when a Navy team approached the capsized ferry Princess of the Stars and pounded on its hull to check for signs of life, there was nothing but silence.

“We just approached the hull of the ship, we got near and then banged, knocked in order for us to give a sign if ever there are still people inside,” Navy spokesman Lt. Col. Edgard Arevalo said. “Unfortunately there was no response.”

A child (inset) clutches a picture of her sibling, one of some 800 people missing after the ferry Princess of the Stars sank off Romblon. The ferry, with a hole in its hull, is shown in this photo taken from a Coast Guard plane piloted by Lt.SG Reimondo Santos and Ensign Frederick Gacasa. Photo by BERNARDO BATUIGAS

Capsized ferry Princess of the Stars

Capt. Leah Santiago, spokesman for the Southern Luzon Command, who was in Romblon, also cited reports from the Coast Guard of the slim chance of finding trapped survivors in the capsized vessel.

“It is assumed that hundreds could be inside the capsized boat. Rescuers were knocking on the steel hull to detect possible responses, but there was no sign of movement,” Santiago said.

Santiago also spoke of some survivors’ stories that only over a hundred were able to jump overboard before the ship keeled over.

The Princess of the Stars of Sulpicio Lines was carrying more than 800 passengers when it sank in rough seas off Romblon last Saturday at the height of typhoon “Frank.” Photographs showed only the tip of the ship’s bow visible above the waves.

As of press time yesterday, there were 100 fatalities and 40 survivors.

Rescue teams brought to the site by BRP Pampanga battled furious seas and high winds yesterday in a desperate hunt for more survivors.

“We have slowed down to scout for floating bodies,” the BRP Pampanga’s master Lieutenant-Commander Inocencio Rosario told reporters on board.

“After three days they tend to float,” he added.

“We have not lost hope that there might be more survivors,” said coast guard chief Vice Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo.

However, several bodies have also washed up ashore along with children’s shoes, heightening fears of a high death toll. A coast guard crew was among those slowly combing the waters for victims of the disaster.

A US vessel was en route to help with search efforts and was expected to reach the site in around 15 hours, Presidential Spokesman Jesus Dureza said. A P-3 maritime surveillance plane was also being dispatched to help in the search and recovery efforts.

In Masbate, nine male corpses believed to be passengers from the Princess of the Stars washed ashore.

“The bodies were bloated and decomposing. What we did was just to wrap them up and buried them right away,” a local mayor told radio.

The 24,000-ton Princess of the Stars had been allowed to sail despite typhoon Frank bearing down because, under current laws, the vessel was large enough to stay afloat in the periphery of the storm.

But Frank made a sudden change of direction from north to west, and headed directly into the ship’s path.

The captain, Florenio Marino, reportedly tried to get the vessel to safe harbor, but it ran aground. There were conflicting reports that he had slowed the engines in the face of the storm and that the motors had given out.

The ship issued a distress signal on Saturday afternoon from near Sibuyan, about 150 kilometers south of Manila. One survivor said there was almost no time to react.

“It seemed like everything happened in 15 minutes,” Reynato Lanorio, one of the crew, told dzBB radio. “Next thing we knew, the ship had gone under.”

He estimated about 100 people could have escaped the vessel, but thought the others were trapped inside.

Hopes dim for more survivors

Rescuers considered boring a hole in the sunken vessel yesterday in a desperate attempt to find more survivors trapped in air pockets inside the capsized vessel.

Hopes dwindled by the hour that large groups of survivors might be found in areas where communications were cut off by Frank that left at least 163 people dead in flooded communities.

“They’re scouring the area. They’re studying the direction of the waves to determine where survivors may have drifted,” coast guard spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Armand Balilo said.

The coast guard said it was checking a survivor’s report that at least one group of people â€" some dead, some alive â€" had been spotted bobbing in the sea.

A number of coast guard and navy ships swarmed to the area but were largely kept at bay by big waves in the still roiling waters.

Rep. Eleandro Madrona, who flew over the ferry yesterday afternoon, reported seeing only a tugboat nearby because of the conditions.

“I was thinking, where could these 700 people be?” Madrona said. “There’s no operation there at this time, but the search and rescue is ongoing in nearby islands.”

Distraught relatives of the people on board the vessel complained to Sulpicio employees while waiting for news in Cebu, where the Princess of the Stars was meant to dock.

“You can’t bring our loved ones back. You should be held responsible,” one woman told employees of the company.

A floor of the passenger terminal was converted into a mini chapel with a makeshift altar. Nuns and priests comforted those waiting.

During an emotional Catholic mass, one man pounded the wall in grief over his missing son.

Edward Go, one of Sulpicio’s owners, said the company was relying on the coast guard for information.

“We fully understand the feelings of the people and we are prepared to help them in any way we can, but, as of now there is really no information available,” he told Reuters.

“Definitely, Sulpicio Lines is responsible here,” said Transport Undersecretary Elena Bautista.

The government also set up a taskforce to investigate the cause of the accident, while anti-corruption campaigners said they would launch a class action against the company, claiming it should lose its operating license.

Sen. Richard Gordon, who is also the chairman of the Philippine National Red Cross, said a survivor described mountainous waves and chaos as the ship went down on Saturday afternoon.

“According to him it was so dark, it was high noon but it was so dark, and there was too much rain and the waves were just too much for the ship,” Gordon said.

It was the company’s fourth disaster at sea in the past two decades, and the transportation department slapped an immediate ban on further sailings.

An archipelago of more than 7,000 islands, the Philippines is hit by an average of 20 typhoons a year and has a long history of shipping tragedies.

Bodies on the shore

Survivors and dead bodies turned up on the shores of Romblon, Burias in Masbate and Mulanay in Quezon.

In Mulanay, 28 survivors turned up on Sunday morning. Quezon Province Police director Senior Superintendent Fidel Posadas said the survivors were originally 30 but two drowned when they reportedly removed their life jackets when they were near shore.

“They were located in Barangay Mulanay on Sunday morning but since the barangay is four hours away from Lucena City, we just learned about it the following day,” Posadas added.

But Santiago of SOLCOM said at least 38 survivors were rescued as of press time: 28 found in Mulanay, five in Burias, four in San Fernando in Romblon, and in Agtiwal.

Santiago said the recovery team found five dead â€" one in Mulanay and four in San Fernando.

She added SOLCOM chief Maj. Gen. Delfin Bangit ordered a non-stop search and recovery mission “despite the unpredictable weather just to possibly save lives.” â€"  With Roel Pareño, Cecille Suerte Felipe, Ed Amoroso, Celso Amo, Rudy Fernandez, Evelyn Macairan, Cet Dematera, AP

To lose weight and keep it off, eat a big breakfast packed with carbohydrates and protein, then follow a low-carb, low-calorie diet the rest of the day, a small study suggests.

The "big breakfast" diet works, researchers say, because it controls appetite and satisfies cravings for sweets and starches. It's also healthier than popular low-carb diets because it allows people to eat more fiber- and vitamin-rich fruit, according to Dr. Daniela Jakubowicz, of the Hospital de Clinicas in Caracas, Venezuela.

She told the Endocrine Society's annual meeting in San Francisco that she's successfully used this diet in her patients for more than 15 years.

SUSUPE, Saipan â€" Zenaida Balisalisa had been waiting for her husband, Amado, at the Saipan International Airport on Wednesday afternoon.

But an hour after Amado’s scheduled arrival, Zenaida received shocking news: her husband suffered a heart attack and died while on board the Saipan-bound Continental Micronesia flight. He was 46 years old.

“Na-shock ako. Parang nawala ako sa sarili ko. Ang hirap (I was shocked.
It’s as if I lost myself. It’s hard)," she told GMANews.TV in a telephone interview Thursday.

Amado, who hails from Dasol, Pangasinan, was only five days away from being interviewed for a United States “green card" when he succumbed to cardiac arrest.

Due to the incident, the Continental plane, which left Manila Wednesday morning, was forced to
make an emergency landing on Guam to release Amado.

His family is now seeking financial help to bring his remains back to Saipan.

Meanwhile, Zenaida said whatever assistance that can be extended by the Filipino community on Saipan would be greatly appreciated. She said they used up their savings for her husband’s bypass surgery last April.

Zenaida and Amado were married for 16 years. They have four children, all US citizens.

‘A good man’

Ceferino Balisalisa, Amado's uncle, described his nephew as a good man.

"Isa siyang matulungin at mabait na tao (He’s a helpful and good man)," Ceferino said.

Amado's immigration status changed from a Filipino contract worker to a Filipino national with an immediate relative (IR) status, after his eldest US citizen son petitioned him.

He worked as a gas attendant on Saipan, where he stayed for over 20 years. Last April, he went to the Philippines to undergo a bypass surgery.

Jose Rey Madrilejos, assistance to national officer at the Philippine Consulate General in the CNMI, said Amado and his wife were scheduled to be interviewed by the US Immigration office in Guam on Monday, June 23, for their "green card" application.

Amado decided to go to Saipan first to pick up his wife, before flying to Guam on Sunday.

"Mag-isa na lang ako. Malungkot pero mas kailangan ko siyang gawin ngayon dahil mag-isa na lang ako na tutulong sa mga anak ko (I'm all alone now. It’s sad but I need to go on, especially now that I'm the only one left to help my children)," Zenaida said.

She said she and her husband have long wanted to go to Hawaii once they get their green card to look for higher-paying jobs to help their family. They have relatives in Hawaii.

She will be flying to Guam on Sunday to personally bring her husband’s remains to Saipan. She said she has yet to hear the amount needed for the body’s repatriation.

The Coalition of United Guest Workers (CNMI), led by its president Irene Tantiado, has started seeking help for Balisalisa’s family. - GMANews

Sports and Fitness / Celtics Crush Lakers for Title
June 18, 2008, 07:27:23 PM

           CELTIC PRIDE

BOSTON - Spend too much time in Los Angeles and you forget what a real crowd sounds like, those deafening decibels, that beery din.

The Boston Celtics' 17th championship was accorded the familiar rituals: the spray of confetti followed by a televised trophy presentation. Still, however loud it remained inside the TD Banknorth Garden, by then the festivities had already begun to take on an anti-climactic air.

As celebrations go, this one was particularly exhausting, having begun midway through the fourth quarter. Finally, with 4:01 remaining and the Celtics up by a mere 35, Doc Rivers removed his triumvirate of stars known as the Big Three.

"They came in as a group," Rivers said. "I thought we should take them out as a group."

They each thanked their coach, the most effusively grateful being Paul Pierce, now concluding his 10th season with the Celtics in a manner he could not have envisioned a year ago.

"He just kept saying, 'Thank you, thank you, thank you for sticking with me again,'" recalled Rivers.

This time last year, Pierce was a malcontent on a 24-win team â€" "the classic case of a great player on a bad team," as he famously described himself â€" waiting to be traded. "Rock bottom a year ago today," Pierce said.

Now he was the best player on the best team in basketball, a clear choice for the Finals MVP, an award widely forecast to be won by Kobe Bryant.

As it happened, in yet another example of just how strong this Boston team is, Pierce was outscored by three teammates: Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and, of all people, Rajon Rondo. Rondo had 21 points to Pierce's 17. Pierce, who's bigger and tougher than anyone really knew, also had 10 assists, one fewer than all the Lakers starters combined.

"Paul was only viewed upon as a scorer," Rivers said. "Now I think people see him as a complete basketball player."

By now there has been plenty of talk about the Big Three doing together â€" late in their careers â€" what they could not do alone. "The guys dropping their egos for the good of the team," said Pierce, who grew up an ardent Lakers fan near the old Forum in Inglewood.

But the Celtics were more than their three stars. They were also an amalgam of bit players, castoffs thought to be too young, too old, too limited or perennially dissatisfied. "As important as it was that they trusted each other, I thought it was far more important that they trusted the other guys," Rivers said.

The other guys, in no particular order, included Eddie House, Sam Cassell, Kendrick Perkins, Leon Powe, Glen Davis, James Posey and 38-year-old P.J. Brown, who was talked out of retirement. In trusting the other guys, the Big Three set an agenda and a level of expectation for the non-stars. The Celtics, as reconstituted in the off-season by Danny Ainge, would not suffer from foolishness or selfishness or lack of defense. They would rebound. They would fight for loose balls.

Theirs was a virtuous way to play basketball, and it showed in the way they beat the Lakers Tuesday night. The Celtics survived an assortment of maladies in this series, including Perkins' shoulder, Rondo's ankle and Pierce's knee. Still, the absurd final score, 131-92, turned out to be more lopsided than any elimination game in the history of the NBA championship.

But there are yet other ways to quantify the Celtics' glory, and by extension, the Lakers' ignominy:

Kobe Bryant scored his fourth field goal at 5:30 of the first quarter. He didn't score another until 7:09 of the third. In other words, Michael Jordan's rep is safe, even in Los Angeles, for another year.

The Lakers didn't record an offensive rebound until Sasha Vujacic grabbed the first at 11:11 of the fourth quarter. By then the score was 91-62.

The Celtics had 18 steals to the Lakers' four.

The Lakers didn't block a shot.
Looking back on this game, you should recall a single possession in the second quarter that saw Boston grab three offensive rebounds before Posey sank a 3. That put the Celtics up by six, 35-29. But it also made you wonder about Los Angeles.

The Lakers were about to break, and the arena was about to get loud. It was the kind of loud you just don't hear in L.A.

Pack up the championship trophy and book a flight back to Boston, the NBA finals aren't over yet. The Los Angeles Lakers are headed East to try a historic comeback of their own. Kobe Bryant scored 25 points, including a decisive dunk in the final minute - and Lamar Odom added 20 as the Lakers, playing with pride on their star-studded stage, prevented the Celtics from winning a 17th title with a 103-98 win in Game 5 on Sunday night to close to 3-2 in this restored rivalry.

CHICAGO, Illinois â€" Senator Barack Obama greeted Thursday (June 12) Filipinos all over the world in celebrating their 110th Philippine Independence Day.

In a press statement released by the Obama campaign headquarters in Chicago, Illinois, the presidential Democratic nominee extended his warm wishes to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and the Filipino war veterans who fought alongside the US some 60 years ago.

"On this anniversary, we also must recognize the enormous contributions of generations of Filipino immigrants to building a more vibrant United States of America. Indeed, more than 60 years after World War II, Filipino-Americans continue to serve brilliantly and bravely as members of our fighting forces," he said.

Consul General Blesila C. Cabrera led the raising of the huge Philippine flag at the Daley Plaza Thursday at West Washington and Clark Streets in downtown Chicago at 9 a.m. as part of the Independence Day celebration.

A reception followed in the Social Hall of the Philippine Consulate also in downtown Chicago at 5:30 p.m. Among those who attended the reception were the area Filipino World War II veterans, according to Vice Consul Roberto “Bob" Bernardo.

The Filipino connection

Obama went on to say that he grew up in Hawaii and have met Filipinos who "have had an enormous positive impact on the culture and economy."

"As dedicated military and civil servants, lawyers and bankers, artists, engineers and entrepreneurs, agricultural and industrial laborers, healthcare providers and customer service workers, caretakers for our elderly and youth, Filipino Americansâ€"4 million strongâ€"have enriched our country, embodied our nation's highest ideals, and reflected the very best that the Philippines has to offer," Obama said.

"The Philippines has been a staunch partner of the United States through the Cold War and the war against terrorism. In part because of our shared history, we cannot ignore the fact that the Philippines continues to confront many difficult challenges, including persistent poverty, natural disasters, and political division," he added.

Meanwhile, Obama also expressed desire to work with Filipinos and the Philippine government in the future.

"I look forward to working with the Filipino people and their government, as part of the global community, to combat poverty and generate wealth, build healthy and educated communities, and change the odds for generations to come," he said.

Support for the veterans

Reiterating his support for the Filipino veterans, Mr. Obama urged his fellow legislators to make the law a reality.

"The Veterans' Benefits Enhancement Act of 2007 would honor the service of all US veterans, including these Filipino World War II heroes," Obama said.

The US Senate passed Filipino veterans' equity bill last April.

S. 1316 provides for a flat rate of $3,600 annual non-service disability pension for single Filipino veterans living in the Philippines; $4,500 annually for married veterans; and $2,400 annually for surviving spouses.

While H.R. 760 permits non-U.S. citizen Filipino veterans of World War II residing outside of the United States to be eligible for a pension and death pension paid at a flat rate annually at $8,400 if married, $6,000 if not married and $3,600 for low-income widow.

Both versions will restore full veterans’ status to Filipino veterans of World War II which had been taken away under the Rescission Acts of 1946. This ends a long-standing injustice and fulfills the U.S.’s promises to those who served during World War II. - GMANews.TV

Los Angeles, CA:- Last Wednesday, at the middle of the press conference at the 15th floor of the Cox Communication Center in San Diego, Bill Caplan, one of the top promotional gurus at Top Rank Promotions interrupted the conference.

“I have a very special announcement”, he said. “It’s breaking news, as I speak to you now,” he continued.

Then Caplan proceeded to announce that he just got information from Ring Magazine revealing that they have revised their listing after the retirement of Floyd Mayweather and elevated Manny Pacquiao to the top of the list.

“Manny Pacquiao is now the new pound-for pound boxer in the world,” Caplan proudly announced to the San Diego press corps and went on to explain what that means for the media people present who are new in the fight business.

With that, a huge round of applause reverberated in the room and everybody proceeded to congratulate Pacquiao, who responded to all the accolades by just simply flashing that killer Pacquiao smile and saying, “Thank you.”

When asked how he felt about being the new guy on top of the list, Pacquiao responded: "It’s a very big honor for me to be named pound-for-pound. All I am trying to do is maintain that in every fight. I can assure that I give a good fight and make people happy.”

Pacquiao during his career won world titles at 112, 122, and 130 pounds. On Saturday, June 28th, he will be going for his fourth weigh class title as challenges WBC lightweight (135 lbs) champion, David Diaz of Chicago at the Mandalay Bay Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

Someone asked him about Ricky Hutton, the 140 pound champion. Pacquiao answered: “I want to fight him too.”

Odds are the Pacquiao-Hatton fight may happen before the end of the year or early next year. There have been speculations that Bob Arum is quietly laying the ground work for that to happen. But Arum is not saying anything now otherwise, he would throw off the public’s interest to the Pacquiao-Diaz blockbuster.

To this writer and to many of the Pacquiao “fanatics”, the announcement is indeed welcome one. But we just can not help but say: “So what else is new”?

MANILA, Philippines - U.S. spy planes watch their jungle strongholds and Filipino assault troops keep them on the run. Combat casualties and arrests have eroded their numbers.

But Abu Sayyaf militants have survived years-long American-backed military assaults and remain a threat, reflecting the dilemma of defeating terrorism.

Suspicions quickly fell on the al-Qaida-linked militants for the June 8 kidnapping of popular TV news anchor Ces Drilon and her two-man crew on violent southern Jolo Island â€" the latest reminder of their unsettling tenacity and the danger they still pose.

The abductions stunned a nation accustomed to Drilon's face, and there were hopes she might be freed after one of her cameramen was released Thursday despite ransom demands.

The young Abu Sayyaf militants being linked by police to kidnappings are relative unknowns eager to replace commanders who have been killed, captured or hampered by age.

A few Islamic hard-liners and religious leaders organized the Abu Sayyaf with just one 30-caliber machine gun and four assault rifles on southern Basilan island in 1992. At its peak in 2000, the group had amassed about 3,000 members, including about 500 armed fighters, who were mostly jobless peasants with little combat training, according to a captured pioneer rebel commander, Abu Hamdie.

The Abu Sayyaf â€" or Bearer of the Sword â€" wrote its early history in blood, staging kidnappings, bombings and beheadings to draw attention, recruits and funds from al-Qaida.

American troops were dispatched to the troubled south in 2002 after Abu Sayyaf gunmen kidnapped nearly two dozen people from a resort, including three Americans, turning the region into a key theater in Washington's global war on terror.

Rare photos of the militants, a report on the interrogation of a recently captured Indonesian rebel ally and a confidential Philippine police terrorism report seen by The Associated Press depict a group struggling to cope with the loss of many of its leaders, funding and logistical shortages and battle setbacks.

But they also tell a disconcerting fact: Hundreds of militants have survived and are continuing to plot attacks.

More than 380 Abu Sayyaf fighters, with 298 firearms, are hiding mainly in the hinterlands of predominantly Muslim Jolo and nearby Basilan island, according to a police terror threat assessment.

Following the killing, in Jolo clashes, of Abu Sayyaf chieftain Khaddafy Janjalani and his presumed successor Abu Sulaiman in 2006 and 2007, respectively, the loose alliance of about six rebel factions has had no central leader, the police report said.

A foreign-trained commander, Yassir Igasan â€" valued for his crucial connections with Middle Eastern financiers â€" has declined to lead the group for unspecified reasons, the report said.

Mohamad Baehaqi, an Indonesian ally of the Abu Sayyaf who was captured in southern Davao Oriental province in February, told interrogators of planning bombings and kidnappings in March 2007 with two local militants, but couldn't follow through "because of financial and manpower considerations," a Philippine government interrogation report quoted him as saying.

Later, Baehaqi claimed to have been ordered by another Indonesian militant, Umar Patek, to bomb Roman Catholic cathedrals in southern Davao city and Jolo, with the explosives to be delivered by Patek's wife. Those attacks fell through because of funding problems and tight security in the targeted areas, he said.

Patek, a key suspect in the 2002 Bali nightclub bombings who is believed to be hiding in the southern Philippines, told Baehaqi that "financial support from Indonesia was getting hard to come by," he said.

The hardships were evident in two photos recovered by the army from a slain Abu Sayyaf commander last year. They show Janjalani, another top commander, Isnilon Hapilon, and about a dozen other militants cooking in a small, sooth-covered pot over a wood fire. One militant had bloodshot eyes; another had taken off his shirt in the jungle heat.

Hapilon was seriously wounded in a clash with troops April 30 in Jolo, according to the military.

Washington has offered a US$5 million reward each for the capture or killing of Janjalani, Hapilon and several other senior commanders.

Legally barred from local combat, U.S. forces have provided training and weapons to local troops and regularly fly surveillance aircraft over Basilan and Jolo, about 590 miles (950 kilometers), south of Manila, for any sign of the militants.

Baehaqi, the Indonesian militant, described the death of Janjalani, who the military said was killed in a gunbattle with marines in Jolo's jungles in September 2006.

Defying a suggestion to rapidly move back during the clash, Janjalani and three other militants instead tried to maneuver around the marines, after seeing some had been killed and wounded. As a result, he was fatally wounded in the neck, Baehaqi said.

The angered militants assaulted the marines but backed off again after one of them was hit by gunfire. A few rebels brought Janjalani's body uphill for a rapid burial.

With a militant videotaping the event, "They all kissed Janjalani's forehead before he was buried," Baehaqi said.

Using a two-way radio to monitor military conversations, the Abu Sayyaf gunmen dodged an airstrike and managed to escape from government forces, setting up land mines behind them as they ran away. - AP

This was how the Boston Celtics of yesteryear â€" Cous and Russell and Bird and Hondo and the Chief â€" would do it. Digging deep, they fought for every loose ball, scrapping with grit and guts, champions clad in green. These Celtics are no different. And they are just one win from another NBA title. "Yeah," Kevin Garnett said. "I can taste it." In their comeback season, Boston saved its biggest one of all for the finals. The Celtics rallied from a 24-point deficit and beat the Los Angeles Lakers 97-91 on Thursday night to take a commanding 3-1 lead in this history-rich series and move within one victory of a 17th championship that seemed impossible a year ago.

MANILA, Philippines - A personal hero who will be remembered forever.

This was how former President Joseph Estrada described actor Rodolfo "Rudy" Fernandez, who was laid to rest Thursday afternoon after succumbing to periampullary cancer last Saturday at the age of 56.

Fernandez was laid to rest at the Heritage Memorial Park in Taguig City. He was survived by his three sons, actor Mark Anthony Fernandez, with former partner Alma Moreno; and two sons Ralph and Renz, with actress Lorna Tolentino.

Present at the burial, aside from his Rudy's family and Estrada, were his best friends Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Ramon Revilla Jr and Philip Salvador, Robin Padilla, Susan Roces, Tirso Cruz III, Edgar Mortiz, Ricky Davao, Efren Reyes.

Among those who bid Rudy goodbye were Annabel Rama, twins Richard and Raymond Gutierrez, Eddie Gurierrez, Ruffa Gutierrez, Rizal Vice Gov. Jestoni Alarcon, Pagsanjan Mayor George Estregan Jr, Gabby Concepcion, Jude Ejercito, Boots Ansons-Roa, Fanny Serrano, Lani Mercado and Lolit Solis.

"This is a great loss to the movie industry. This is especially sad for us because he was not only a fellow actor but a true friend of the family, especially to my son Jinggoy," Estrada said.

The former president believes that it is fitting that Fernandez is being buried on Independence Day because to his family, friends and fans, "he was a personal hero who will be remembered forever."

Fans

Radio dzBB's Tuesday Niu reported that Fathers Sonny Ramirez and Larry Faraon led four other priests in officiating the funeral Mass.

The report said Ramirez, in his homily, asked Rudy's family to be strong and quoting a Bible verse, said that one has to be broken into pieces in order for God to work in him and make him whole again.

The same radio report said Fernandez's fans who were not allowed inside the Heritage Memorial Park were seen peeking on the fence to catch a last glimpse of their idol.

A separate GMA Flash Report said some of the fans were disappointed as they missed their last opportunity to see their idol. The fans, who were wearing shirts bearing a picture of Fernandez, said they came all the way from the provinces.

Fernandez's casket was brought from the chapel to the tomb by a horse-driven hearse.

Before the late actor's casket, which was draped with a Philippine flag, was put inside the tomb, a 12-gun salute was given. Fernandez was reportedly a reservist in the Philippine Navy.

Rudy is also an adopted member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) class of 1972.

There was also a bag piper playing during the funeral rites. The funeral rites ended past 3 p.m.

Chemotherapy

Before his death, Fernandez had underwent chemotherapy sessions, radio-frequency-ablation treatment on the liver and even radiation. He also underwent a Rexin-G therapy.

Daboy, as how Fernandez was fondly called by friends in the movie industry, was born on March 3, 1952. He was the son of film director Gregorio Fernandez. He started his active film career in 1970 while he was still a student at the University of Santo Tomas.

Based on a profile posted on Wikipedia, Fernandez signed a contract with Sampaguita Pictures in 1970 and first featured in a movie "For Your Mama" (1970), then paired with Connie Angeles in "Sweet Matutina" (1976).

Fernandez made his breakthrough as an action star with "Bitayin si Baby Ama" (1976). His viability as an action star was further enhanced with the box-office success of "Ang Leon, Ang Tigre at ang Alamid" (1979).

Beginning with "Baby Ama," a biopic of a well-known Filipino criminal, Fernandez has specialized portraying true-to-life characters.

One of his notable action films was "Markang Bungo" (Skull Mark) in 1992 , based on a true story where he portrayed the well-known Baguio City police officer Bobby Ortega.

It was in this film that Fernandez' most popular Tagalog line, "Trabaho lang ito, walang personalan (It's work only, nothing personal)" was first heard.

In 1995, the sequel "Iligpit si Bobby Ortega, Markang Bungo 2" (Execute Bobby Ortega, Skull Mark 2) was released.

Aside from portraying a real police officer, he was cast in the lead roles for the biopics of Filipino politicians Vincent Crisologo and Panfilo Ping Lacson.

Fernandez portrayed the life of Crisologo in a 1991 movie "Bingbong: The Vincent Crisologo Story".

In an interview with GMA News when he went to the wake, Crisologo said that even after the movie, the friendship between him and Fernandez continued.

Awards

In the film "Lagalag: The Eddie Fernandez Story," Rudy starred as Eddie Fernandez, a Filipino actor during the 1970s and the father of Pops Fernandez.

Fernandez also starred in the GMA Network sitcom "Da Boy, en Da Girl," opposite Rosanna Roces. He also played a supporting role in other TV series in GMA like "Twin Hearts" and "Atlantika." He was also the host of the docu-drama "Kasangga."

Fernandez won two FAMAS Best Actor awards for the action films "Batuigas...Pasukuin si Waway" in 1984 and "Victor Corpus" in 1988.

He received the Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) 2008 Ulirang Artista Lifetime Achievement Award at the 24th Star Awards for Movies.

Also, he received the Film Academy of the Philippines FPJ Lifetime Achievement Award.

In 2001, he ran for Quezon City under former President Joseph Estrada's Puwersa ng Masa but lost to Feliciano Belmonte Jr. - GMANews.TV

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines - A television cameraman who was abducted by suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits in Jolo, Sulu, last Sunday, was freed Thursday evening, police told GMANews.TV in a telephone interview. Govt emissary: Ces Drilon cried for help

MANILA, Philippines - Sulu Vice Gov. Lady Ann Sahidula said Thursday she was able to talk with ABS-CBN newscaster Ces Oreña Drilon who has been held captive by an armed group believed to be Abu Sayyaf militants since Sunday.

Sahidula told GMA News that Drilon cried for help when the newscaster reached her via phone.

The GMA News interview on Sahidula was aired on late newscast Saksi early Friday.

“Tumawag muna siya sa mga pamilya niya ([I learned that] she called up her relatives first)," Sahidula said. “Tumawag sa akin [at] bigla na lang sinabi niyang ‘tulungan mo ako’ (Drilon called me up and then she pleaded for help)."

The vice governor said Drilon sounded frightened during their conversation that took place Wednesday.

A GMA News source, who is involved in the negotiation for the release of Drilon’s group, said the ABS-CBN newscaster was with Prof. Octavio Dinampo of the Mindanao State University. Drilon’s crewmen were being held separately by the captors. On Thursday night, Drilon’s assistant cameraman, Angelo Valderama, was released.

Reports quoted Undersecretary Amilasan Amilbajar of the Office of the Presidential Assistant for Mindanao as saying a P2-million "board and lodging fee" was paid in exchange for Valderama's freedom.

"[Angelo] Valderama is finally freed. He will undergo medical examination and debriefing by government authorities. We are still waiting for developments on the other hostages," Superintendent Julasirim Kasim, the Sulu police chief, told GMANews.TV.

Valderama was released to Indanan Mayor Isnaji Alvarez in the village of Sinumaan in Talipao, Sulu, at about 8:30 p.m., said Kasim, National Police provincial director. - GMANews.TV

As of posting time, the kidnappers were still holding ABS-CBN reporter Ces Drilon and another cameraman Jimmy Encarnacion, including their guide, Professor Octavio Dinampo, of the Mindanao State University.

Valderama was undergoing a "debriefing" as of posting time in the provincial capital of Jolo, Kasim said, adding that the cameraman was "OK naman" and had no visible bruises or torture marks.

"Valderama looks OK," Kasim said.

Alvarez said Valderama was freed as a "gift." He refused to say if a ransom was paid to secure Valderama's release.

The kidnappers earlier asked for Alvarez, a former Moro National Liberation Front leader, to negotiate for the release of the hostages.

Alvarez is running for governor in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao elections in August.

It was not immediately known whether ransom was paid in exchange for the release of Valderama, but the kidnappers have reportedly demanded as much as P50 million for the hostages.

The kidnappers originally demanded P10 million, but radio network dzRH on Thursday said the bandits asked for P50 million.

The report said the hostages should have been freed on Wednesday after unnamed negotiators agreed to pay the ransom.

The radio network, which quoted "unnamed sources privy to the negotiations," also reported that the kidnappers already lowered their demand to P25 million.

The reports could not be independently confirmed.

Alvarez said Valderama was freed as a "gift." He refused to say if a ransom was paid to secure Valderama's release.

ABS-CBN earlier issued a statement saying it would not pay ransom to avoid emboldening kidnap-for-ransom groups "to abduct other journalists, putting more lives at risk."

Proof of life

Armed Forces chief Gen. Alexander Yano earlier on Thursday said the government received "proof of life" from the abductors of Drilon, her crew and Dinampo.

Yano gave the assurance that Drilon and her companions are alive.

Armed men believed to be members of the Abu Sayyaf group took the journalists on Sunday while they were on their way to the town of Maimbung in Sulu.

Asked if there is any proof that the four are alive and well, Yano said the Armed Forces has been receiving "information from the committee on the ground."

"I'd rather not go into the details. Suffice to say there is proof of life," he added.

Yano made the statement as he revealed that government forces are prepared to use force if necessary to secure the victims.

"We have several options from the most benign option to the extreme use of our arms, but all these options we will withhold pending the other activities on the ground so we would not rather telegraph our moves," he said.

Yano said a crisis team that included representatives of the military, the police and local government officials, among others has been formed in Jolo.

He said that they received initial information showing that the Abu Sayyaf might be involved.

"It's a plain and simple terrorist act and other details later on can be discovered," he said when asked if the disappearance of the four was politically related or a simple case of plain kidnapping.

Yano reiterated that the no ransom policy remains in effect adding that the government will not negotiate with the bandits. He said there is also no timetable set. "It's not easy to set a timetable for unreasonable groups, so we'd rather work on our own,"Yano said. - GMANews.TV

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines â€" Broadcast network ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation on Wednesday said it would not pay ransom to Abu Sayyaf militants who are holding its news crew.

The Abu Sayyaf is demanding P10 million for the safe release of the hostages, according a military report.

Militants are holding the network's senior reporter Cecilia Victoria "Ces" Oreña-Drilon and her two cameramen Jimmy Encarnacion and Angelo Valderama, including a university professor Octavio Dinampo.

The four were intercepted near the village of Kulasi in Maimbung town on June 8 while on their way to clandestinely interview a senior Abu Sayyaf terror leader Radulan Sahiron, who is said to be planning to surrender.

"ABS CBN News journalists Ces Drilon, Jimmy Encarnacion, and Angelo Valderama have been kidnapped for ransom. ABS CBN News is doing everything it can to help the families of its kidnapped journalists through this harrowing ordeal," the television network said in a statement released on Wednesday.

"However, ABS CBN News will abide by its policy not to pay ransom because this would embolden kidnap for ransom groups to abduct other journalists, putting more lives at risk," it added.

Police said the hostages are still alive, but it was unclear where the Abu Sayyaf is hiding the victims. "They are alive. We have sources who told us that all four hostages are alive," Chief Superintendent Joel Goltiao, commander of police forces in the Muslim autonomous region, told the GMANews.TV.

Goltiao said there are efforts to negotiate with the kidnappers for the release of the hostages. "There are options here and one if to locate the hostages and negotiate for their safe release," he said.

He said the police are closely coordinating with Sulu Gov. Sakur Tan, the head of the local Crisis Management Committee, in resolving the problem peacefully. "Governor Sakur Tan and the crisis committee are working hard to resolve this problem," he said.

Police have tagged Gafur Jumdail and Albader Parad, a young, but notorious Abu Sayyaf leader who is wanted both by Washington and Manila for terrorism and killings, as behind the kidnappings. "As far as we know, Parad and Gafur are behind the kidnappings," Goltiao said.

Parad's group was also tagged as behind the kidnapping early this year of Maria Rosalie Lao, 58, a rice trader in Jolo town.

He was among the Abu Sayyaf militants that seized 21 people, mostly Asian and European tourists in April, 2000 from the Malaysian island-resort of Sipadan. Last year, Parad's group also kidnapped seven people in Sulu and beheaded them after their families failed to pay up ransom.

Parad is also included in the terror list both of Washington and Manila for his involvement in the spate of terror attacks and kidnappings of foreigners. The US has offered up to $750,000 bounty for Parad's capture.

The Philippines' largest Muslim rebel group, Moro Islamic Liberation Front, also offered to help secure the release of Drilon's team which arrived in Sulu on June 7 from Zamboanga City.

Senior Superintendent Julasirim Kasim said Drilon did not coordinate with them when they arrived in Sulu. She also declined military escorts. He said the victims were believed taken to the hinterlands of Indanan town.

Drilon's group is billeted at the Sulu State College hostel in Jolo town where they took two rooms and left on Saturday afternoon after ordering foods good for 20 people.

A hotel staff said he saw Drilon hurriedly left and even asked her where she was going. "She was really in a hurry and I even asked her where they were going and Ces Drilon only replied that they would just be nearby. They never came back since Saturday."

Drilon's group was the second from the television network to be kidnapped in Sulu in the past eight years. Reporter Maan Macapagal and her cameraman Val Cuenca were also kidnapped on the island while working on exclusive news on the Abu Sayyaf.

Independent journalist Arlyn dela Cruz was also kidnapped in Sulu while covering the Abu Sayyaf. Another photojournalist Gene Boyd Lumawag was shot in the head by an Abu Sayyaf militant while shooting the sunset in Sulu several years ago.

The Abu Sayyaf had also seized foreign journalists covering the group's kidnapping of 21 Asian and Western holidaymakers from Sabah. It also kidnapped in the past local traders and most of those kidnapped were freed in exchange for ransom, but many were also raped and killed. -

  Chocolate Hills

THE entry to the new wonder nature list of the 1,268 dome-like Chocolate Hills in three towns here has climbed up to number four, overtaking Amazon River of Latin America, Mount Everest and Ganges River of Asia now at number 7, 6 and 5, respectively, after it was delisted weeks back for unknown reasons.

At least three entries of the Philippines landed in top ten. They are the Chocolate Hills, Tubbataha Reef of Palawan at third slot and Puerto Princesa Subterranean River, also of Palawan at number eight. The fourth Philippine entry, the perfect cone Mayon Volcano of Albay, is at number eleven based on the latest on-going on-line voting for the search of new seven wonders of nature.

Still at number one slot is the Ha Long Bay of Vietnam and Cox's Bazar Beach, Bangladesh number two.

Provincial officials led by Gov. Erico Aumentado and Vice-Gov. Julius Caesar Herrera issued separate campaign statements urging Boholanos and non-Boholanos alike around the world to cast vote by logging on at www.new7wonders.com to make Choco Hills as one of the new seven wonders of nature by next year or 2010 when the decision is made by experts.

In a separate interview, Mayor Boy Molina of Carmen, where most of the Choco Hills are concentrated along with Batuan and Sagbayan towns, also took the cudgels of pushing the campaign. He said that his administration is spreading the word by handing out leaflets and posting billboards in conspicuous areas in some towns to vote for the Choco Hills to be one of the seven wonders.

He said that he likewise urged fellow Carmenanons, who are now residing or working in the U.S., particularly in California, to cast vote on Choco Hills. In fact, some concerned Carmenanons have created a website in the U. S.

Lorna T reveals tearful moments with Daboy,

So, talagang kailangan pigilan mo.

After that, umalis naman kami, pumunta kami ng Amerika.

"There was ano kasi, sumobra yung...hay! Mahirap mag-rewind ano," kasunod ng pagbagsak ng hindi na napigilang luha sa mga mata ni Lorna.

"Kasi itong incident na sinasabi mo, this was the incident na nag-breakdown talaga ako sa kanya. That's the only time na talagang umiyak ako nang husto. Umiyak ako nang husto noon dahil nakikiusap ako sa kanya nung time na yun. Dahil yun yung sinabi niya... Nagkaroon siya ng congestion sa lung sa dami ng fluid na dumaan sa kanya.

"And then, sabi niya, ayaw daw niya [i-revive].

Yun yung time na nag-breakdown ako.

And then, niyakap niya ako. And then, sabi niya, ‘O, sige na nga. Basta't huwag ka nang umiyak.' Pinagbigyan niya ako dahil umiyak lang ako. Pero kinabukasan, siguro mga after two to three days na okey na... Alam namin pareho na hindi na aabot ‘to. In-explain niya sa akin kung bakit niya mas nanaisin na huwag nang ipagpatuloy ang buhay niya sa ganung paraan dahil lahat daw mahihirapan," naiiyak na lahad ni Lorna.

THE MORNING AFTER.

"Actually, it's a platelet, ‘no? And yung first unit noon, pumasok pa doon sa pinaka-port sa cut niya. But then, yung second one, ayaw na. Hindi na tinatanggap. So yun yung hindi ko na nakayanan. Talagang pinipigil ko na huwag umiyak. Pero yun yata yung pinakamasakit na pigilin mo kaya talagang nadinig niya kung gaano rin kasakit ang iyak ko. And then, tinawag niya ako, ‘Mama, Mama.' Ayun," salaysay ni Lorna.

DABOY'S FIGHT.

"I mean, he's an action star and at the same time, sabi nila siguro ibang laban ang nilalabanan niya. Ang kalusugan niya at maraming makaka-relate na mga...imposible na hindi tayo nagkakasakit o isa sa atin merong pamilya natin ang may sakit. So, mas lalo sigurong naramdaman ng mga tao yung laban na tinatahak ni Rudy, e."

Sa paanong paraan niya gustong maalala si Daboy sa kanyang isipan?

"Alam ko kasi na... Siguro basta't ang alam ko, ako yung tao na nasa puso niya. Ako yung taong minahal niya. Sinasabi nga niya, ‘Ikaw ang nasa puso ko,' most of the time.

So, wala na, e. Wala kang magawa. Yung wala kang magawa, yun ang masakit.

"Sinabi ko sa kanya, "I love you Babe, I love you Papa.' And then, he tried his best, actually, naka-lift yung face niya at naka-ganun [nakataas ang bibig]. ‘Pag kasi hirap ka na, hindi ka na masyadong makasalita ng ano, parang yung tongue mo, medyo parang umuurong. And he really tried his best to say and to respond to me, and he said ‘I love you,'" pagtatapos ni Lorna. - Philippine Entertainment Portal

MANILA, Philippines - Action star Rudy Fernandez succumbed to pancreatic cancer early Saturday morning, ending a battle that lasted several months. He was 55 years old. The actor died in his sleep after the cancer for almost two years.

Daboy during happier moments with wife Lorna

Fernandez died at 6:15 a.m., less than a month after he was brought home from a hospital. Fernandez had also undergone treatment abroad for his illness.

A healing mass attended by several friends at the Christ the King Church in Quezon City last May 10 was held for him.

Security

At the Heritage Memorial Park and Crematorium, security has been beefed up in anticipation of fans and celebrities who would flock to the wake of the actor. The crematorium will be closed off for awhile to keep the wake exclusive to relatives and close friends of the late actor.

As of this posting, some of the actor's closest friends were already at the crematorium to condole with Lorna Tolentino, the actor's wife, who declined to be interviewed.

Among those sighted with Tolentino were Senators Ramon Revilla Jr., Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada, Amy Austria, Gina Alajar, Tirso Cruz III, and Philip Salvador.

Estrada was to make arrangements for the funeral and burial, said Fernandez's manager Lolit Solis.

"Mabuti namatay siya sa pagtulog, talagang hirap na siya. Di niya kaya, di makatayo (It was better that he died in his sleep because his body was racked with pain)," Solis said.

Solis said that as early as Tuesday night, Fernandez experienced extreme pain, but forbade his wife from calling an ambulance. The actor’s condition had worsened since he left the hospital.

"Pagdating sa bahay, iba na. Di na nakakikilala, hinang hina na (When he was brought home, he was so weak such that he could not immediately recognize people)," Solis said.

She said Fernandez could not stand people crying, adding, he even requested that son Mark Anthony Fernandez not be immediately allowed to enter his room because Mark wept when he first saw him.

'Daboy'

"Daboy" was born on March 3, 1953, the son of film director Gregorio Fernandez. He started his active film career in 1970 while a student at the University of Santo Tomas.

He made a name for himself as an action star with "Bitayin si Baby Ama" in 1976 and gained further fame with "Ang Leon, Ang Tigre at ang Alamid" in 1979.

The actor was also known for portraying true-to-life characters, including "Markang Bungo" in 1992.

Fernandez won two FAMAS Best Actor awards for the action films "Batuigas...Pasukuin si Waway" in 1984 and "Victor Corpuz" in 1988.

He received the Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) 2008 Ulirang Artista Lifetime Achievement Award at the 24th Star Awards for Movies.

Also, he received the Film Academy of the Philippines FPJ Lifetime Achievement Award.

Fernandez has one son, actor Mark Anthony Fernandez, with former partner Alma Moreno; and two children with actress Lorna Tolentino.

In 2001, he ran for mayor of Quezon City under former President Joseph Estrada's Pwersa ng Masa but lost to Feliciano Belmonte Jr. - GMANews.TV

Brothers and sisters here's a spiritual meaning of salt which was taken from (Ezekiel 47:11);

That salt signifies the longing of truth for good, is evident from the signification of salt, as being that longing for good which is of the love of truth; hence salted denotes that in which is this longing. The reason why there must be a longing of truth for good is that this longing is conjunctive of the two; for in so far as truth longs for good, so far it is conjoined with it. The conjunction of truth and good is what is called the heavenly marriage, which is heaven itself with man; and therefore when in Divine worship, and in each and all things of it, there is a longing for this conjunction, heaven is in each and all things there. Thus the Lord is in them. This is signified by the requirement that the incense should be salted. Salt has this signification from its conjunctive nature; for it conjoins all things, and from this gives them relish; salt even conjoins water and oil, which otherwise will not combine.

MANILA, Philippines - Ailing Philippine democracy icon, former President Corazon Aquino attended a dinner Friday hosted by ex-President Joseph Estrada for Malaysian former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

"This is a coming together of icons of democracy," Estrada said in a statement.

He was referring to Aquino, Anwar and Datin Seri Wan Azizah, Anwar's wife who has been leading the opposition in Malaysia.

A press statement issued by the Estrada camp said that Aquino - who had been diagnosed with cancer - looked "quite strong and was in very jovial spirits."

Estrada and Aquino, who had arrived earlier with his son Senator Noynoy Aquino, greeted Anwar when he arrived at 7 p.m. sharp at Estrada's residence at No.1 Polk Street, North Greenhills.

Also on hand to greet the Malaysian leader were former Estrada Cabinet members who had met Anwar in the past, including Sec. Jose Pardo and Sec. Ben Diokno.

Also present were Senator Jinggoy Estrada, and to represent Mindanao, Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez and Sharif Kabunsuan Rep. Didagen Dilangalen and former Senator Santanina Rasul.

Dinner was an elaborate fine dining experience catered by French Corner Chef Billy King but the mood was very casual and pleasant. The dinner included lamb, roast beef, sea bass and lobster.

"It was truly a reunion between old friends," Estrada spokesperson Margaux Salcedo said of the event, "You could see it in their faces. They could've eaten tuyo and they would've been equally as happy with the occasion. They were just excited to see each other. They probably wanted to compare notes because they were both unjustifiably imprisoned, then now they are both released and the clamor for them both to make a comeback is so strong."

Datin Seri Wan Azizah also mentioned that this meeting is important to them because they had been wanting to visit Estrada when he was incarcerated but they were not allowed by the government to do so. - GMANews.TV

Sprawled near the edge of the famed parquet floor, Paul Pierce grabbed his throbbing right knee and wondered if his first NBA finals - the ones he had always dreamed of playing in - were finished. "A lot was going though my head," Pierce said. "'It can't be over like this."' The Boston Celtics' captain wouldn't quit. He came back out, carrying the franchise's title hopes with him. Pierce, who as a kid growing up in Los Angeles used to sneak into Lakers games, returned from a knee injury to inspire and lead Boston to an emotional and tense 98-88 victory on Thursday night in Game 1 of these tradition-soaked NBA finals.

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"Life is not a battle. I love it; I want more of it. That’s all I ask, just a little more.”

There was neither desperation nor urgency in the voice of actor Rudy “Daboy” Fernandez; it was a matter-of-fact laying of cards on the table. He had no time to indulge, he said, in anything remotely “dramatic” or “negative.” Time is gold, now more than ever.

We were in the sitting room of his White Plains residence. “When I was still having chemotherapy,” he said, “after every infusion, I would just lie here and try to watch TV, which was the only thing I could do for about three or four days. I’d be very, very weak. And when that side-effect started to wane, it would be time for another session. So I had practically no other activity. I’ve memorized, I think, every corner of this room, every show on Channels 2 and 7.”

Then, finding the precise description, he blurted out, “Low-bat!” He could laugh about it now. Today, he seemed fully charged and cheerful. And chatty. It was a Sunday afternoon, April 27. He and his wife, Lorna “LT” Tolentino, were set to leave for the US the day after, for the next round of a revolutionary gene therapy.

Alarming news

The action star has stage IV peri-ampullary cancer, a relentless adversary. Last Monday, local show biz media were gripped by alarming news that Daboy’s condition was critical. Text messages flew, fast and furious. The one that Inquirer Entertainment received from LT, from the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan, was characteristically calm: “Rudy is slowly improving. He had surgery called PTBDâ€"percutaneous transhepatic billiary drainage.” She asked for prayers, as usual.

Periampullary cancer is “an enlargement of the ducts from the liver and pancreas where they enter the small intestines,” according to Medical Observer, one of two trade magazines that had Rudy on the cover of their March issues.

The last US trip was supposed to be for a month, enough time for a full round of the gene therapy called Rexin-G.

LT’s SMS was, therefore, not entirely reassuring. It said they had stayed in the US for only four days, and that it was found that Rudy had an obstruction in his billary duct. They had come home and gone straight to the CSMC the morning of Sunday, May 4. “We are still here,” the text message said. On the Monday evening news, one of Daboy’s devoted buddies, Sen. Bong Revilla, gave a statement wearing very dark glasses that did little to hide his anxiety. “He’s in pain,” the senator said of his dear friend.

Rare gift

To think that, only two weeks ago, Rudy had given Inquirer Entertainment what, in his condition, was a rare and precious gift of conversation.

“Many things have changed,” he told us. “Obviously, I can’t do everything I used to do â€" I can’t work, for one. But many good things happened, too.”

When his ailment was diagnosed at stage I in March 2006, he immediately underwent Whipple operation, a procedure named after American surgeon Allen O. Whipple, who devised it in the 1930s. It is a major, highly delicate procedure (10 hours) that involves removing parts of the pancreas, bile duct, gall bladder and duodenum, then suturing together the remaining bile duct-intestine connection.

Rudy and LT were told that many patients had gone on to live many years after the operation. And, indeed, the actor bounced back. “Maganda ’yung recuperation ko. I even did two teleseryes for GMA 7 â€" ‘Atlantika’ and ‘Now and Forever.’”

But the cancer came back in early 2007. Rudy explains, “Any recurrence, stage 4 agad, automatically. They found two lumps in my liver, and another near the pancreas.”

He was discussing all this like he was talking of another person. At times he would stop for about two seconds, not at a loss for words, but as though to consider the subject from another angle.

“What I have is the rarest among the rare types of cancer,” he proceeded. “In the Philippines, there are only three protocols (loosely, drug combination) of chemotherapy. “The first one didn’t work for me. I shifted to a different formulation, which worked for a while. The third one, I simply refused, because one side effect is acne all over the face. And if you don’t break out, it means the protocol is not working. I told my doctor that I didn’t want to die miserable.”

Clinical trial

He added, laughing now, “I’d die anyway, so why should I have to undergo that? I’d rather go happy, looking good. Imagine me in my coffin, unrecognizable because of the acne? So they found something else for me.”

It was Rexin-G. Rudy, 55, was “accepted” for the clinical trials in a US hospital. In the Philippines, he said, it was an approved treatment (at Asian Hospital in Muntinlupa), and that foreigners came here for it, although it’s “very expensive.”

He described it, thus: “It’s not chemo, it has no side effects â€" ‘targeted’ kasi, meaning, it finds only the cancer cells. I started on Rexin-G in February. I think it’s working.” Lorna herself noted the vast improvement on Rudy’s complexion. (The latest trip was supposedly for his third Rexin-G regimen.)

Rudy was talking, in the very least, like an efficient nurse’s aide. Lorna, he said, was much better at it. “What I know is really just 50 percent of what she does.”

He clarified that he wasn’t hoping to “go back to normal.” He was willing to try anything that worked, he said, because he was, by nature, a “positive” person. “But I realize that everything I’m doing is just to prolong my life. Plus, maybe to lend some quality to it. I’d like to be able to travel some more; I don’t mind not being able to work. Of course, I also want a little more time with my family and friends. Okey na ’yon.”

Right now, he wanted to go back to the first question: “How had his life changed since getting sick?”

“Life is a wonderful thing, and now I can say I have really seen the beauty of it. I have a good family â€" mabuting asawa, mababait na anak. And so many friends! Nadagdagan pa yata. In church, strangers would approach me and say they’re always praying for me. Siguro naman, ’di sila nambobola, kasi nasa simbahan kami.”

We asked, what about other things that people who are forced to slow down suddenly notice, like the sunrise, the sunset? This was met with a hearty laugh, like it was... maybe a stupid question? “Naku, matagal ko nang ina-appreciate ang mga ’yan!”

One oncologist gave Rudy a life expectancy of six months from the time the cancer recurred. “Pinalitan ko siya agad,” he said. “Ayoko ng gano’n e. See? It’s been more than a year since then.”

Happily, he has found unique opportunities to give back the kindness he has been receiving from strangers. “Some friends would call at times, asking me to talk to people they know who are sick like me, but who, unlike me, are always depressed. So I do that, I talk to those people on the phone for about 30 minutes. I say, don’t think only of your sickness, or of how long your doctor says you are going to live. I say that I myself let only the Lord decide when to take me. Meanwhile, kung binigyan ka ng Panginoon ng isang taon, magpapakalungkot ka pa ba? Sayang naman, e di isang buwan na lang, tutal malungkot ka naman, papahabain mo pa.”

A few times, too, Daboy was invited to speak to gatherings, including a group of doctors. “Hindi ako mahilig do’n e,” he said. “Baka pag sinabi kong hindi ako natatakot mamatay, mapagbintangan pa akong mayabang. At ano naman ang sasabihin ko sa mga doktor, e hindi pa nga ako magaling?”

What he often did these days that he didn’t do much before his affliction, he said, was stay home. “Paikot-ikot lang ako rito. And my friends and family take turns visiting â€"kanya-kanyang araw sila.”

‘Dramatic’ friend

The curious thing, Rudy noted, was that he usually found himself making them feel better about his situation. “Lalo na ’yang si Jinggoy (Estrada, another senator-actor buddy). Pag nakikita ako, nalulungkot. Ano ’yon e, dramatic. Iyakin. Pero lahat ng kaibigan ko, lalong bumait.”

He had to relate one “hilarious” day with them: “LT and I had just come from Hong Kong, where I had a PET-CT scan. Bong, Jinggoy and Ipe (actor Phillip Salvador) came with us to my doctor. The prognosis was not good. That night, we all met again at the wake of Erap’s (former President Joseph Estrada, Jinggoy’s father) cardiologist, Dr. Lorenzo Hocson. Bong asked how I was feeling. I said I was okay. He didn’t believe me. The third time he asked, I said I wasn’t afraid to die, but that I was a little sad. Pero may solusyon do’n, I told him. ‘Dadalawin ko kayo palagi!” The reaction to his little prank was instantaneous. “Pare, p......., ’wag mong gagawin ’yan.” He said only Ipe did not protest.

Daboy, quite the raconteur, had stood up, the better to tell that story. When he stopped laughing (again), he said, “Walang halong bola. I do not fear death. But I’m afraid of pain. I don’t like needles. All things considered, I feel lucky that, at least, I know I’m on my way, mauuna ako sa iba.”

He’s been asked if he ever questioned his fate. “I tell them, no, no. God’s been very good to me. Tinanggap ko agad ito, kahit ibang klaseng laban. Ang buhay, hindi ’yan battle. Gustong-gusto ko nga ng buhay e.”

Not that he had an unfinished to-do list. What about, like, see the children of his younger kids Rap, 24, and Renz, 22? (Mark Anthony, his eldest son with Alma Moreno, has two.) I don’t think of that.”

Positive outcome

Something he had thought of was, maybe he had done some people wrong. “I say to myself, if I see this person or that, baka nabugbog ko, o anuman, I will apologize. That is not very likely though, so I just pray that they forgive me. As for some people who have wronged me, I have forgiven them.”

Had he actually picked up the phone to call anyone of those people? “I don’t know where they are,” he said. “And I wouldn’t apologize to all of them naman.”

Definitely one positive thing has come out of the harrowing experience. “Na-appreciate ko lalo ang asawa ko. We are truly living our wedding vows. ’Yung ‘in sickness and in health...’ lalong tumingkad. Mabait talaga si LT, pero mas bumait pa siya. I didn’t expect all this from her. If she had done less for me than she is doing now, it would still be more than I probably deserve.”

The very thought visibly hit a spot, and Daboy’s eyes welled up. “When I had my Whipple operation, one month ako sa hospital, one month siyang hindi umuwi. Lumalabas lang ng Cardinal Santos para mag- ‘Startalk’ (her Sunday talk show on GMA 7). She’s been hands-on from the start. ’Yung support niya, superlative degree.”

Jinggoy, Bong and Ipe were in the operating room during the surgery, he recounted. “Spoiled na spoiled ako.”

Still, it was no picnic, Rudy recalled, even with the steady stream of visiting friends and relatives. “I was in the ICU for six days. I even vomited blood. At one point, I actually prayed, ‘Lord, ang hirap naman nito. Pagalingin mo na ako. Pero kung oras ko na, kunin mo na ako.”

Even so, Daboy didn’t remember becoming short-tempered at any point. “I don’t think so, but ask LT.”

(She would oblige later on, when Rudy wasn’t listening: “There are times, yes. Ako rin naman e. Siyempre when you’re in pain, or very tired... but I feel I don’t have the right to be sad or irritable. I need to be strong. I need my mind to be clear, to focus on him.”)

LT not prepared

Rudy remembered one instance, when he received news that the cancer had metastasized and, “Nag-drama ako ng mga two days.”

Friends had rushed over to pray over him, he recalled, led by Tirso Cruz III. “Si Pipo,” Rudy said, “ang galing magbasa ng Bible. I like listening to him. Kung ako lang, hindi ako mahilig.”

Given that he was always tired, he said, he had stopped going to his Christian community, the Oasis of Love. “But I hear Mass on Sunday, and my conversations with God have become more intense,” he said. “Kasi nga, malapit na akong pumunta sa Kanya. Matagal ko nang alam na matapang ako, pero di ko akalain na handa na akong humarap sa Panginoon.”

“I’m not prepared for that,” LT said, rather emphatically. “For me, it is a fight as well. But of course I also end up saying, ‘Thy will be done.’”

Everyone’s doing his part, she said. Rap and Renz have become homebodies (“They just ask their friends to hang out here.”). Mark comes over as often as possible, with his 9-year-old daughter Chelsea, whom Lolo Rudy is very fond of.

LT sees that they all draw strength from one another, including Rudy, and considers it her job to keep the exchange working to their advantage. “Pag nakikita ko siyang medyo teary-eyed, hindi ko sya pwedeng sabayan. At any given time, dapat may isang malakas. If anyone falls apart, may domino effect ’yun e.”

Once, when they were alone after one gloomy consultation with a doctor in the US, Rudy told her, “Don’t cry, ha?”

“Sabi ko, basta ’wag ka rin iiyak. But I feel that, until now, he does cry when he’s alone and I don’t see it. Ako rin.”

If Rudy has his friends, LT does, too. She knows they’re there when she needs them, old friends who have stood the test of time. “Sina Amy (Perez), Gina (Alajar)... marami sila... si Sharon, lahat ng klaseng support they extend to me â€" lahat. Sharon begs off from visiting if the situation is not so good. But she will call to say she will come when she’s sure she’s not going to cry.”

The no-drama “rule” among friends was being enforced, LT explained, because it had previously been proven that the cancer got more aggressive whenever Rudy’s morale dropped.

On Tuesday evening, the latest message from LT to Inquirer read: “Each day, he is giving his best fight.”

Not too long ago, on that Sunday afternoon in White Plains, the scenario was the opposite of struggle.

Rudy was enthusiastically filling up his plate with merienda fare, recounting yet another hilarious moment with his three buddies:

“Napapag-usapan lang naman â€" ’yung iba pang mga kaibigan namin, ’yung may memorial plans na, humahaba ang buhay! Si Dolphy, halimbawa, pumili na ng casket niya. Si President Erap, may nitso na … ang lakas-lakas nila pareho, ’di ba? So sabi ko, ‘Prepare na rin kaya tayo?’”

Then one last time, after two hours of laughter and reminiscences, he lent himself to a pensive pause: “Paminsan-minsan, iniisip ko, pa’no kaya ang mga anak ko, ang mga apo ko, kung wala na ako?”

We wanted to know, of course: Then what happens? He smiled broadly. “Tingin ko, kaya nila.”

Family & Parenting / Planting Tree is Never Fun
June 05, 2008, 10:26:16 PM
Prospective newlyweds in an Indonesian province are being given one more promise to honor: planting trees to help slow the rapid deterioration of the country's forests.

As Indonesia marks World Environment Day on Thursday, husbands-and brides-to-be in Gorontalo, a rugged mountainous province on Sulawesi island, are being required to plant 10 seedlings supplied by the local government, said Hasyim Alidrus, head of the religious affairs office.

It is part of a nationwide "re-greening" initiative launched by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the Bali Conference last November when millions of trees were planted across the vast archipelago.

The program, critics say, is largely symbolic in a nation that is losing its forests at one of the fastest rates in the world because of illegal logging, mining, new oil palm plantations and slash-and-burn land clearing.

Conservationists say deforestation on Borneo island has claimed an area the size of some European countries and continues virtually unabated.

That has hardly dampened the enthusiasm of 27-year-old Khairul Baso and his fiancee, Andini, who received two 6-month-old teak trees along with palm, fruit and flower seedlings ahead of their wedding this weekend.

The couple is just one of nearly 900 that this year received trees from Gorontalo's religious affairs office, where they are required to register their marriage documents. Couples are required to plant the trees to receive their legal paperwork, Alidrus said, although it was unclear how the rule would be enforced.

People who drink alcohol are less prone to the sometimes crippling disease called rheumatoid arthritis compared with non-drinkers, according to a Scandinavian study published on Wednesday.

People who had a moderate alcohol consumption were 40 and 45 percent less likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis compared with people who did not drink or drank only occasionally, it found.

Among those who had a high consumption, the risk was reduced by 50 and 55 percent respectively.

Most surprising was that the biggest benefits were seen among smokers with a genetic profile known to make them vulnerable to the disease.

Rheumatoid arthritis affects between 0.5 and one percent of people, according to figures for the industrialised world.

It happens when the immune system attacks the joints, causing inflammation and damage to the cartilage and bone.

A mixture of environmental factors, especially smoking, and genetic heritage are the deemed causes of the disease.

The authors, led by Henrik Kaellberg of the Institute of Environmental Medicine at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, note previous research that suggests alcohol interferes with inflammatory processes that trigger heart disease.

Doctors advising patients about the disease say they should urge smokers to kick tobacco, but not necessarily to stop consumption of alcohol in moderate quantities.

High consumption of alcohol, while apparently protective for rheumatoid arthritis, is itself linked with many other health problems.

The paper appears in Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, a specialist journal published by the British Medical Association (BMA).

PUBLIC school students, while no longer required to wear uniforms, should be in "appropriate school attire," Education Secretary Jesli Lapus said yesterday.

Guidelines on what constitute proper school attire will be drawn up by the department, he said.

Lapus on Monday issued a directive dropping the uniform requirement for all public school students. This was after President Arroyo exempted Grade 1 pupils from the requirement.

Lapus said public schools in other countries do not impose the wearing of uniforms.

In the Philippines, he said, requiring uniforms is "like requiring public education to have a cost" under a free public education system.

Lapus said students who want to wear uniforms can do so.

Education Undersecretary Ramon Bacani said schools will be issuing IDs to prevent lawless elements from entering public schools.

He said the IDs are free.

Lapus said scrapping of the uniform requirement stemmed from government's desire to ease the financial burden of parents. The move will also enable more children to go to school, he said.

He said Arroyo ordered "absolutely no collection of fees" for Grades 1 to 4 students. For Grades 5 to 6, school fees or contributions may be collected only a month after school opening and only after approval of parents.

At least seven of 10 students drop out from school primarily because of poverty, the presidential task force on education said.

Arroyo wants the dropout rate reduced to 20 percent, said Augusto Syjuco, chief of the Technical Education and Skills Development (Tesda).

DepEd data show that for every 100 children who enter Grade 1, close to 15 do not make it to Grade 2, and roughly one-quarter (24 percent) drop out before Grade 4.

It said less than 20 percent of those who go to public elementary school actually attend a full year of preschool education.

Mona Valisno, presidential adviser for education, said the task force is targeting a "zero dropout" rate.

Fr. Ben Niebres, president of Ateneo University and task force chairman, sought an assurance from local government units that they would use part of their internal revenue allotment to subsidize schools to encourage students to stay in school. - Jocelyn Montemayor, Ashzel Hachero and Wendell Vigilia

MIANYANG, China - Chinese authorities prepared on Saturday to drain a swelling lake formed by a devastating earthquake, completing work on a drainage channel to divert water that threatens hundreds of thousands downstream.

Officials are expected to discharge flood water from the lake into the channel between Sunday and Tuesday, the official Xinhua News Agency reported, quoting Yue Xi, deputy chief of the water and electricity section of the People's Armed Police.

The lake, called Tangjiashan, formed above Beichuan town in the Mianyang region of Sichuan province when a hillside plunged into a river valley during the May 12 quake.

Chinese authorities had evacuated nearly 200,000 people by early Saturday and warned more than 1 million others to be ready to leave quickly if the lake floods.

The confirmed death toll from China's worst quake in three decades was raised Saturday to 68,977, an increase of about 120 people from a day earlier. Another 17,974 people were still missing, the State Council, or Cabinet, said. The daily increase was the smallest since the government started announcing death tolls shortly after the quake hit.

Xinhua said "a total of 197,477 people were evacuated to safe ground as of 8 a.m. Saturday." It did not say how the number was determined. Some of the people may have been in the path of the planned runoff.

State television showed bulldozers and other heavy earth-moving equipment working on the water diversion channel. It did not show how far up the landslide the channel had been carved.
Xinhua said Tan Li, the Communist Party chief of Mianyang, had issued another order for all 1.3 million people in the area to be evacuated if "the barrier of the quake lake fully opens" and floods the area.

There was no sign that the banks of the lake were about to burst. Troops have sealed off Beichuan to the public.

Tangjiashan is the largest of more than 30 lakes that have formed behind landslides caused by the quake, which also weakened man-made dams in the mountainous parts of the disaster zone.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The candidate is on an outdoor stage, her shoulders bobbing and weaving as two reggaeton performers dance around her. Welcome to Hillary Rodham Clinton's most excellent adventure.

Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., in Caguas, Puerto Rico, on Saturday

She has just given a mercifully short 10-minute speech and would soon wade into the rope line, all smiles, signing T-shirts, taking pictures and otherwise mugging with a crowd that had waited more than four hours to see her.

Party leaders are demanding a quick end to the Democratic contest. Yet her legions of loyal backers have no qualms about pressing on. With the end of the primaries able to be counted by the clock â€" 72 hours away â€" Clinton appears unflappably amused.
