Three treasure hunters suffocated to death when they inhaled gaseous substances from the two water pumping sets they used in digging at a secluded lot in far-flung La Paz, Saguday, Quirino on Wednesday (September 8), police said.

Police Senior Inspector Mario Camilo, Saguday Police Chief in Quirino Province, said that the fatalities were identified as: Jimmy Pableo, a 33-year-old treasure hunter and lot owner; his son Mark Anthony Pableo, 18, and Manuel Ignacio, 28, Mark Anthony’s godfather. They suffocated to death due to gas poisoning. Their five companions survived the poisoning.

Mark Anthony’s body was recovered earlier and was brought to the hospital but he was declared dead on arrival. The two dead bodies were later brought out of the dug 100-foot tunnel by the Bureau of Fire Protection rescuers and volunteers.

Camilo said the treasure hunters, at least eight of them, had been digging for an alleged Japanese gold chest treasure for already eight months prior to the accident.

The treasure hunters did not get a permit for their hunting works.

The Saguday police have already banned treasure hunting in the area. (PNA)

Philippine Showcase / Araw ng Siquijor Celebration
September 10, 2010, 07:30:35 AM
Preparations for the Araw ng Siquijor celebration likely goes full blast this year with the introduction of several added attractions to make it even grander and livelier.

Without necessarily adding more to its budget, this year's 38th Araw ng Siquijor on September 17 promises to be a celebration replete with more exciting activities, combining new with the old ones.

This was finalized during the meeting with the provincial government of Siquijor, the Siquijor Tourism Council and all government line agencies at the SP Session Hall recently.

Provincial Governor Orlando A. Fua Jr., during the series of meeting for the event, constantly calls for the support of each agency, government and private, to ensure a successful celebration.

This he further boosted with his tapping of private individuals and organizations as member of the Siquijor Tourism Council to serve as one of the Siquijor Day celebration “prime movers”.

Activities include the Sports Fest that officially opens on September 3 at the Siquijor Capital Square with a street parade and added sports such as Cheer Dance contest and dance sports to liven up the day.

Several other sports will be played from the opening up to the Grand Day.

There will also be a National Open Tennis tournament at the Capitol Tennis Court on September 13.

Also on the same day, is the opening of the Agri-Trade Fair/Food Fair at the Capitol Grounds; Poster making dubbed “Garay” contest; Photo contest, Sayawit Siquijodnon Competition and Miss Siquijor Tourism 2010 Talent Night.

Music and dance also fill the air starting this day (September 13) onwards in the daily/nightly cultural presentations and live performances from all six local government units, Siquijor State College and the Department of Education. - PNA

Gunmen robbed on Wednesday the Cebu Pacific ticketing office and carted away some P50,000 cash and other valuables.

The robbery hold-up occurred at 4 p.m. some 50 meters away from a police station and densely populated commercial district of the city.

Police said three men posed as clients of the ticketing office, one of whom went inside while two others disarmed the security guard of his cal. 38 revolver.

Security guard Joel Visquizo said he was not expecting the trio were robbers since they appeared to be formal and wearing neat clothes.

Sr. Supt. Willie Dangane, city police director, said the suspects were armed with cal. 45 pistol.

Once inside, the suspect declared hold-up and carted away the ticketing office cash collections, mobile phones and other personal belongings of the office workers.

The robbery was over in two minutes, police said.

Responding policemen launched pursuit operations but the suspects made good their escape. (PNA)

Philippine Provinces / Top Drug Suspect in Nueva Ecija
September 10, 2010, 07:25:35 AM
The police's campaign against illegal drugs gained big boost after a suspected big- time peddler was arrested at dawn raid here Thursday.

Supt. Eliseo Cruz, city police chief, identified the suspect as Miguel Eduardo Jr., 39, a resident of Barangay Zulueta here.

Cruz said the suspect has been a concern of the police anti-drug campaign for several years but has managed to either evade arrest or post bail when collared.

Sophisticated enough, a close circuit camera was installed with a computer monitor beside the suspect's table, thus not everybody can get close of the area without being noticed, police said.

Eduardo said the CCTV was for his protection.

Recovered from the suspect's possession in the raid conducted at about 5:40 a.m. Thursday on the strength of two warrants issued by the Regional Trial Court (RTC) were one shotgun, one cal. 45 pistol, a grenade and three small plastic sachet of suspected shabu with a total volume of 1.2 grams, digital weighing scale, and other paraphernalia.

Police said charges for violation of illegal possession of firearms and explosives and illegal drugs are being readied against the suspect. (PNA)

Philippine Provinces / Coop Development in Pampanga
September 10, 2010, 07:24:22 AM
The Provincial Cooperative and Entrepreneurial Development Office (PCEDO) has lined-up various capability building activities on cooperative development as it seeks to fully empower the 200 existing cooperatives in Pampanga.

PCEDO Head Mamerto Gatus said that his office, in close coordination with the Provincial Cooperative Development Council (PCDC), will be conducting four seminars on cooperative development from September to December this year.

“The PCDC officers, with Juanito Mercado of Apung Monica de Minalin multi-purpose cooperative as chairperson, have been very active and committed in the pursuit of projects and activities designed to empower the cooperatives in the province,” Gatus said.

The PCEDO is scheduled to conduct a cooperative governance and management seminar this month, policy development seminar in October, strategic planning in November and parliamentary procedures in December.

“Through these capability building activities, we envision that our cooperatives will be fully knowledgeable and adept in managing their respective organizations,” he said.

Aside from the conduct of seminars, the PCEDO and PCDC are planning to produce a manual which would document success stories of cooperatives in the province and would serve as guide and inspiration to other organizations. - PNA

Another variety of black beans called “tabios” that is commonly grown and produced in the municipality of Dauin, Negros Oriental is now being pushed as one of the highlights in the celebration of Kinaiyahan Festival of the said town.

Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) President Dr. Henry Sojor who was the guest speaker during the event, emphasized on the importance of the local variety of “tabios” and moringa or malunggay since these are widely produced in the town.

He said moringa has been identified as the miracle vegetable of the world that has been developed into capsules, tea, and herbal medicine.

He said “tabios” is one of the common dishes served during fiesta celebrations in Dauin. It is best served when cooked with pork fat. During some occasions it is also served with coconut milk paired with grilled dried fish and steamed corn grits.

Dr. Sojor challenged the local officials of Dauin and the trainers to include in their presentation the importance, qualities and impact of local black beans or “tabios” and moringa in the culture, history and economy of Dauin.

The state university president who also hails from Dauin further said that black beans or “tabios” and moringa production are among the common sources of livelihood of the people in the community aside from fishing.

Dauin held its 7th year Kinaiyahan Festival celebration in honor of their patron Saint Nicholas de Tolentino. - PNA

Oil prices snapped a three-day losing streak on Wednesday as a rally in the equity market and a weakening dollar supported the energy commodities.

The Federal Reserve's latest beige book, which was released on Wednesday, said that the economy has shown "widespread signs" of slowing. But seven out of 12 regions tracked by Fed reported moderate or positive growth, and investors took it as a relief that economy is not falling into contraction.

U.S. stocks rallied after the Fed report and boosted sentiment in oil market.

Meanwhile, the successful auction of Portugal's bond sent the euro strengthening against the dollar, which also helped lift oil prices. Usually a weakening greenback increases appeal of the energy commodities' as an alternative investment.

Light, sweet crude for October delivery rose 58 cents to settle at 74.67 U.S. dollars a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. - pna

The U.S. stocks ended off session highs but still held solid gains on Wednesday after strong demand on Portugal's bond auction lifted market sentiment.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 46.32 points, or 0.45 percent, to 10,387.01. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 7.03 points, or 0.64 percent, to 1,098.87 and the Nasdaq was up 19.98 points, or 0.90 percent, to 2,228.87.

Concerns over European debt problems weighed on equities on Tuesday, dragging major indexes down more than 1 percent after a Wall Street Journal report said the recent European bank stress tests understated some lenders' holdings of government debt.

However, Portugal successfully auctioned off 1.3 billion dollars worth of government debt early Wednesday, which helped ease some worries in the market. - PNA

LGU Philippines / Congresswoman Imelda Marcos
September 10, 2010, 07:17:53 AM
Malacanang clarified on Thursday that former First Lady and now Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos is not joining President Benigno S. Aquino III’s official delegation during his visit to the United States this month.

Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office Secretary Ricky Carandang, and Deputy Spokesperson Abigail Valte said that Mrs. Marcos will not be part of President Aquino’s official entourage in his first out-of the-country trip.

President Aquino will attend the 65th United Nations General Assembly at New York on Sept. 20.

According to Lacierda and Carandang, President Aquino has decided to have a small delegation for his U.S. trip from Sept. 20 to 26.

Undersecretary Valte also said that House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. has mentioned that he will be representing the House of Representative in the presidential delegation.

Rep. Marcos, chair of the House committee on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), said on Wednesday that it is up to the House leadership if she will be part of the President’s U.S. trip.

The MDGs will be the primary topic in the UN General Assembly in New York on Sept. 20-22.

According to Rep. Marcos, previous chairpersons of the committee on MDG attended the UN gatherings on the MDGs.

”If I am asked to, I have to, but I have to check first about what is the desire of the leadership and members of Congress. I am just a member of Congress, I’m just following orders. I am supposed to go because all previous chairpersons of the MDG committee have been going there,” Mrs. Marcos told reporters when she attended the presentation on Wednesday of the Fourth Progress Report on the Philippines’ Compliance to the UN MDGs held at Dusit Thani Hotel in Makati City.

Mrs. Marcos said the country will receive this year the Millennium Challenge Corporation’s US$ 4-million grant for various projects in the Philippines. - pna

Philippine Daily News / PAL Union Files Notice of Strike
September 10, 2010, 06:37:51 AM
The cabin crew union of the Philippine Airlines (PAL) on Thursday filed a notice of strike before the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) as the company and employees have yet to settle thier labor disputes.

According to Bob Anduiza, president of the Flights Attendants’ and Stewards’ Association of the Philippines (FASAP), they have filed the notice of strike as the flag carrier management has not acted on their demands.

“We have exhausted the negotiating process, and after countless mediation hearings, PAL remains unmoved and refuses to negotiate in good faith. All our please feel on deaf ears,” Anduiza said, in a press conference held in Manila Thursday morning.

PAL management criticized the filing of the notice of strike for being ill-timed as it would scare away tourists and would cause damage to the companies fragile finances.

The management assured its passengers that airline operations remain normal and all flights are operating as scheduled.

“There is no immediate work stoppage due to the union’s filing of a strike notice. It signals a legal process by which the two parties, with guidance from the labor department, would find ways of striking a balance between what the union wants and what management can afford and is prepared to give,” said PAL spokesperson Cielo Villaluna. - pna

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) on Thursday filed before the Department of Justice (DOJ) tax evasion case against the owners of Club Manila East amounting to P854,986,160.53, inclusive of surcharges and interests adjusted up to present.

Charged were spouses Julio and Priscila Cruz, of No. 14 Velasquez St., Barangay San Juan, Taytay, Rizal and with business address at Dona Priscila Building, Taytay, Rizal.

The respondents are reportedly the owners of Club Manila East-Taytay, Rizal, a seven-hectare business and recreational zone with branches in Real, Quezon and Boracay island.

Investigation showed that the spouses filed their income tax returns only for compensation income they earned.

Verification with the BIR's Integrated Tax System bared that the total combined income of the spouses from 1999 as reported in their BIR Form 1700, which is for compensation income only, amounted to only P9,686,480.

Audit made by the BIR, however, showed that the spouses had a total unreported income of P783,366,011.58 in the form of cash investments to two corporations from 1992 to 2004.

The spouses admitted the existence of such substantial investments when confronted with the findings through several assessment notices issued against them by the BIR.

However, they claimed that they came from personal loans advanced by Julio Cruz, personal loans secured by Julio from private outside source and from their accumulated savings. - pNA

A total of 208 exhibitors are showcasing their world class products in the 14th Mindanao Trade Expo (MTE) which opened Thursday at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Convention Hall here. The expo will run until Aug. 22.

These micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are occupying the 100 well designed and decorated booths filled with environment-friendly products as embodied in the 14th MTE’s theme of Mindanao Trade Expo… Eco-ing Traditions”. The products are ranging from gifts, toys, and house wares (GTH), fashion accessories, furniture and furnishings, fresh and processed foods to investment and tourism opportunities.

MTE Foundation, Inc. (MTEFI) president and 14th MTE chairman Ann T. Pamintuan, in her opening remarks read by Noemi Avanceña, said that since 1996, the expo had been the window for Mindanao products to the world.

“Over the years, the expo has really been the platform for Mindanao MSMEs’ creations. It has been there to help them promote their products, but more importantly, their creativity and commitment, as shown in every creation being displayed in their respective booths," she said.

Since 1996 (except for 2008 when no MTE was held) until last year, the expo has successfully cornered a total of P703 million from 577 buyers.

Pamintuan is optimistic the momentum which it has continuously been reaping over the years will be sustained, considering that the products on display and for sale during the MTE have been improving year-on-year.

“We have to keep on conducting trainings and seminars with the help of international consultants to ensure that the quality and design of our products are improving, and definitely not downgrading,” she said.

Pamintuan said that MTEFI hoped that by pushing eco-friendly products, it would be able “to create a paradigm shift and make people realize that doing business at the same time protecting our environment can be a good mix”.

“We are aware of an increasing demand for green products in the global market. Green products, meaning raw materials taken directly from the plant source. It is now an emerging trend and let this be a call to our entrepreneurs to find creative ways to adapt to this development,” she said.

Meanwhile, 14th MTE Participation Committee chairman Betty More said that in capturing the global market for green products, there must be technology advancement.

More than 80 exhibitors with locally manufactured products in the tourism, food, fashion, gifts, accessories, crafts, and houseware industries will take center stage in the longer-running provincial products fair in Bohol dubbed Sandugo Trade Expo.

According to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Bohol, more exhibitors are expected to participate in the Sandugo Trade Expo 2010 set on July 21-25. The Expo is expected to provide exhibitors a chance to showcase their various products.
At said Expo, Visayan craft producers who joined a series of training and one-on-one consultations with expert designers will be presenting their work prototypes, says DTI Provincial Director Maria Elena Arbon.

"The Sandugo Trade Expo is a culmination of a series of product development initiatives geared towards improving the quality and design of the export-oriented crafts and ethnic food in the region," said Arbon, adding that the Expo not only highlights the region's unique products and services but will also make use of local ingenuity. - pia

Photographers with the eye and passion to showcase the unique Boholano culture can just shoot themselves into a competition and laugh their way home with handsome prizes.

This as a group of photo-enthusiasts here present "PITIK: Tipik Sa Dugong Bol-anon, a photo competition open to professional and amateurs shooting on July 25 and only at the Sandugo 2010 Street Dancing Festival and only there.

"We see the event as our little contribution to promoting Bohol as a major eco-cultural tourism destination by showcasing the diverse and colorful culture of Bohol and at the same time advance local creative energies and hone them into world-class artistic skill," photojournalist Nilo Sapong said.

"It is quite a fact that while many tourists would want to know what a true Boholano is, it's a hard thing to explain despite the apparent comfort of the words at our easy disposal. Now, if a picture paints a thousand words, they we may have a good channel to tell the world what a Boholano is: through pictures," the convenor of the contest organizing committee explained.
The catch however is, photos must be taken during the Sandugo street dancing parade and its subjects are the dancers, props men, instrumentalists, muses, and even onlookers who may well depict the festive street-dancing event and portray a distinctive definition of a Boholano, he said.

According to him, participants can use any digital, including, yes of course, cell-phones with cameras, or film-based camera to document the action or portraiture and have it developed in size 8R at the entrant's expense from the competition's official developing center at the BQ Mall.

He also said creative effects done within the camera at the time of exposure like multiple exposures, flash fill, lighting, filtration and experimentation using the wide range of technical combinations in the camera are allowed, but manually retouched or computer enhanced prints are automatically disqualified, he bared highlighting the composition as a big factor in the picture for judging.

Now, to keep away from possible bias, organizers pick outside Bohol based professional photographers as judges and goes on to make sure photographers names' do not appear in the entries so amateur photographers can give professional snapshot artists a run for their money, he added.

Contest registration is P100 and includes an identification card and kit that allows participants entry into cordoned areas. For contest forms, call or text Nilo at 0928 524 5723. (PIA-Bohol)

DEFINITELY, they are not just your usual cops.

Behind that iron hand keeping peace and order, Bohol cops also have that malleable heart that melts for our kids who would otherwise go to school barefoot.

While celebrating Police Community Relations (PCR) Month in July, officers and men of the Bohol Police Provincial Office led by Provincial Director Rodolfo A. Llorca went a bit further to hand out slippers and school supplies to young kids in rural areas.

According to PCR officer PCinspector John Gano, Camp Dagohoy has been collecting at least a pair of slippers and school supplies from more than a thousand integral men in the force to advance police relations.

The slippers go to young kids whom, police officers and men believe would be motivated to go to school if given the comfort of school supplies and slip-ons.

The activity is the BPPO’s second in a series, the first was in San Miguel town, relates PCInsp. Gano during the recent Talakayan sa Isyung Pulis (TSIP).

In San Isidro last week, Mayor Jacinto Naraga warmly welcomed the police troops led by PSSupt. Llorca during a slipper and school supply distribution ceremony to elementary school pupils of Barangay Cambansag, Cansague Norte and Abehilan at the Cambansag Primary School grounds, says San Isidro Municipal Information Officer Eric Jinne Flor.

“It’s a heart-warming scene, children and even young mother try on the new slippers, elation warmly painted in their faces,” a police-woman shares her experience during a distribution ceremony last July 16.

“How would a stonehearted cop feel when a kid tells him she will not wear the slippers yet, so it wont be dirtied, as she shows a badly dilapidated pair of worn out slippers she is wearing?” she asks.

The activity is also in support of the Oplan Balik Eskwela 2010, a program of the Department of Education and is widely supported by the Bohol Provincial Police Office (BPPO) and in partnership with the municipal government.

To expand police relations, PD Llorca even asked his wife to go with them on the ceremony in San Isidro, some 40 kilometers from Tagbilaran. (PIA-Bohol)

Bohol Latest News / Bohol Airport
July 26, 2010, 12:51:34 PM
The hazardous landing conditions at the existing Tagbilaran City Airport was cited as the primary reason for the insistence to fast-track the implementation of the Panglao Bohol Airport development project.

Meanwhile, Senator Kiko Pangilinan during his visit here last week assured Gov. Edgar Chatto that he will personally find means to have the airport project awarded to the rightful contractor.

Aside from Sen. Pangilinan, winnable bet for House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte likewise assured Rep. Erico Aumentado for the endorsement of the airport project. The Bohol solon said Belmonte being his personal friend assured to support the move. - bohol chronicle

Travel and Tours / Asean Cultural Capital
July 26, 2010, 12:50:49 PM
Bohol will be declared during its 156th Foundation Day on Thursday as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) cultural capital for the month of July.

This will be a first in the history of the Boholano homeland since its founding as a province over a century and a half ago on July 22, 1854. Every July 22 has been celebrated as Bohol Day.

UNESCO ASEAN head Huber Gijzen and Gov. Vilma Santos of Batangas, the holder of the title for June, will turn over the ASEAN flag to the Bohol province thru Gov. Edgar Chatto and Vice Gov. Concepcion Lim.

Santos, a Philippine screen giant outside politics, will herself be a super-imposing figure together with new Department of Tourism (DOT) Sec. Alberto Lim in a parade here that will display the higante figures of men regarded as the five giants of Bohol history.

These oversized mascots are of Francisco Dagohoy and Tamblot, two lasting symbols of the Boholano courage against oppression and injustice, Datu Sikatuna and Spanish conqueror Miguel Lopez de Legaspi who forged the historic Blood Compact, also known as the first Treaty of Friendship between the brown and white races, and the first and only Boholano president of the republic ever, Carlos P. Garcia.

The affair will be graced, too, by Santos' husband, Sen. Ralph Recto, and the officials of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). - bohol chronicle

Travel and Tours / Bohol Tourism
July 26, 2010, 12:48:23 PM
The province which continues to attract tourists, both domestic and foreign, should soon have a "clearing house" for proposed site development projects.

This surfaced as the top recommendation of the Provincial Tourism Council (PTC) to the Chatto administration following the successive opening of "ziplines" in the province.

"While every municipality would wish to develop their tourist attractions, this should be properly guided and evaluated," stressed lawyer Doy Nunag, PTC chairman during the first full council meeting attended by Gov. Edgar Chatto at Panda Tea Suites last Wednesday.

The statement of the PTC chair came following the reported plan of two other municipalities to establish their own "ziplines," an adventure activity pioneered in Danao town. It maybe noted that Loboc followed while Pilar and Dimiao are reportedly planning to put up the same attraction.

Nunag asked the support of the governor to enact legislation for the towns to have their proposed tourism development projects evaluated first by the PTC in order to avoid duplication of the activities which will later on result to cut-throat competition especially in its rates. - the bohol chronicle

It is fatal to make insinuations and conclusions to this story. We are devoid of details.

It could be nga nagduwa gyud ug laing team ang asawa. Mahimo nga wala magluib ang asawa pero wala na siyay gugma. It could be nga ang bana nag-require ug jerjer position nga dili maperform sa asawa on the basis nga paralyze na ang bana.

The other case was a retired public school teacher. Good marriage. Good children. Diha lay problema niabot, naghikog. He was 60 plus na.

Sa akong pagsabot depression ni ang hinungdan, depression tungod sa disability and illness. Incidental nalang tong wa makatanday.

Randy Pausch Last Lecture: Achieving Your Childhood Dreams
Farewell Speech and Last Lecture of Randy Pausch
#867
by David C. McCasland
Our Daily Bread

After being diagnosed with terminal cancer, 47-year-old Randy Pausch returned to Carnegie Mellon University to deliver a final lecture to colleagues, students, and friends. The professor of computer science thought that perhaps 150 people might show up. Instead the 400-seat auditorium was packed. For an hour, Randy opened his heart to them in a humorous, insightful, and moving farewell that was focused more on living than dying. Within weeks, the videotaped lecture had been seen by millions on the Internet and later became the seed of a bestselling book. Those facing death often have an unusually clear perspective on what is truly important in life.

The apostle Paul’s last farewell has inspired countless followers of Christ through the centuries. “The time of my departure is at hand,” wrote Paul. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Tim. 4:6-7). Paul’s instruction to Timothy spans the ages to challenge us as well. The letter begins and ends with God’s grace (1:2; 4:22) and in between is a celebration of the unceasing faithfulness of God.

A message from the dying can give purpose to the living. Paul’s triumphant finale, “To Him be glory forever and ever” (4:18), is a message we can all live by.

Do we live our lives for what will last
Or for what will fade away?
Are we striving for the world’s praise
Or for Christ’s “well done” one day? â€"Sper

If we are ready to die, we are ready to live.

Bible Study / Spiritual Allergies
July 26, 2010, 07:41:31 AM
by Dave Branon
Our Daily Bread

One of our grandchildren is allergic to several kinds of foods. Milk, cheese, eggs, and ice cream are among the items she has to avoid. Even a small amount of these things is detrimental to her health.

She’s not alone in being required to avoid certain things in life. While her allergies are related to her physical well-being, each of us as believers in Jesus has dangers we need to stay away from to maintain spiritual health. Scripture gives us a clear indication of what we are “allergic to” spiritually.

Every kind of evil (1 Thess. 5:22). This should cause us to think about the choices we make, because taking part in what is clearly evil is not good for our spiritual vitality.

Foolish disputes and arguments (2 Tim. 2:23; Titus 3:9). This takes discernment, for some arguments have merit in defending the faith. But those for which there is no answer or which have no bearing on truth only cause dissension.

Sexual immorality (1 Thess. 4:3). The Bible says that any sexual activity outside the boundaries of a marriage between a man and a woman is immoral (Gen. 2:24; Ex. 20:14; 1 Cor. 7:2; Heb. 13:4).

Are we willing to make the effort to steer clear of things we are spiritually “allergic to”?

Today avoid sin’s tempting lures
And evil thoughts subdue,
Or sinful things may take control
And someday master you! â€"Bosch

To avoid sin, nip it in the bud of temptation.

Bible Study / Intentions of the Heart
July 26, 2010, 05:55:16 AM
by David H. Roper

When Jesus commanded, “Judge not,” He was not implying that we should be naïve or imprudent. Of course we need to think critically and analytically in this world where we are often confronted with error and wrongdoing. Instead, He meant that we should not be condemning or accusing, a point Paul made eloquently: “Judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts” (1 Cor. 4:5).

Poet Robert Burns made a similar point, writing of those whose actions are in doubt: “One point must still be greatly darkâ€"the [motive]. Why they do it.” No one knows another’s motives. God alone can bring to light what is hidden in darkness; He alone can expose the intentions of the heart.

Jesus knows the latent forces that motivate others: the cruel beginnings, the fear, the disappointment, the broken heart, the sin that is resisted. Moreover, He is working in every submissive heart to bring it to maturity. Thus in the endâ€"quite often contrary to our expectationsâ€"He will bring praise to those He has brought to completion.

The Lord alone can try the heart. Until He returns, let’s ask Him to help us examine our own.

“Condemn not, judge not”â€"not to man
Is given his brother’s faults to scan;
One task is yours, and one aloneâ€"
To search out and subdue your own. â€"Elliott

Be slow to judge others, but quick to judge yourself.

Hollywood actor and Southern California resident Nick Afanasiev has the longest tongue in the United States, according to San Diego television station Fox 5. Measuring 3.5 inches from the middle of his closed top lip to the tip of his tongue, Afanasiev's tongue is just 0.36 shorter than that of Stephen Taylor, the world record holder for the world's longest tongue.

Afanasiev was launched into fame after YouTube videos of his extraordinarily tongue received more than one million views.

"I knew it was long; I just didn't know it was one of the longest." Afanasiev told the news station.

The recent announcement of a make-over and the admission by the International Monetary Fund of its faults for imposing invasive policy recommendations on developing countries that led to the financial crisis in Asia 1997-98 and in some parts of the world drew criticisms from a debt watchdog.

The Freedom from Debt Coalition stressed that the IMF has already lost its credibility and legitimacy, and the most rationale thing to do is to decommission the so-called “lender of last resort.”

“Asia is better off without the IMF. We believe that the IMF is still the arrogant ‘lender of last resort,’ only this time, this beast is using the sheep’s clothing. The IMF will only bring bad tidings in Asia as what it did during the debt crisis in 1980s and financial crisis in 1997-98,” said FDC president Walden Bello. - source: PDI

Talk of the Town / OFWs Carrying HIV?
July 25, 2010, 10:28:36 PM
A group of medical clinics giving medical exams to hundreds of thousands of prospective Filipino workers for the Middle East on Sunday confirmed a report of the Department of Health that the number of cases of AIDS and HIV among Filipino migrant workers is on the rise.

From January to June this year, the 17 medical clinics associated with Gamca-Philippines detected 19 OFWs with either the human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV) or the full-blown acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).

This number is almost the same as the number for the entire year last yearâ€"which is 21, said Dr. Rodolfo Punzalan of the Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCC) Accredited Medical Clinics Association. - PDI

A new opponent, another peak to conquer for Manny Pacquiao.

The Filipino pound-for-pound king will be fighting Mexican Antonio Margarito for the vacant World Boxing Council light middleweight crown on Nov. 13 in a bid to further bolster his sterling credential as boxing’s only seven-division champion.

Top Rank head honcho Bob Arum, who promotes both fighters, chose Margarito over Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto, the other replacement candidate after negotiations with the camp of Floyd Mayweather Jr. (dubbed as the world's greatest coward by some sports commentators) for a megabuck showdown fell through on July 15.

Arum told Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports on Friday (Saturday in Manila) that he picked Margarito because the three-time former world champion is perceived to be a more competitive opponent than Cotto, who was stopped by Pacquiao in the 12th round to win the World Boxing Organization welterweight title last November.

The venue of Pacquiao-Margarito is uncertain so far with Monterrey, Mexico, and Las Vegas, Nevada, as preferred sites and Abu Dhabi as a long-shot host.

Margarito is still barred from fighting in the United States even after serving a one-year suspension for use of hardened hand wraps against Shane Mosely in 2009.

But casino operators are expected to exert their influence and try to convince the Nevada State Athletic Commission to grant the Mexican even a temporary license to fight in Las Vegas.

The Nevada Gaming Commission bared that casinos had their best night in two years due to the influx of Asian high-rollers last Nov. 14 when Pacquiao dethroned Cotto.

If the NSAC refuses to budge, a 22,000-seat arena, is available in Monterrey, where Margarito and even Pacquiao, due to his reputation as Mexican Assassin, enjoy a huge following.

In an earlier interview with ABS-CBN’s Dyan Castillo, Pacquiao said he has no qualms facing Margarito in Mexico, where he spent a short but pleasant vacation with his family in June.

Pacquiao, who stands 5-foot-6, indicated that he’s willing to tangle with the 5-foot-11 Margarito at a catch weight of not exceeding 150 pounds.

In his return bout on May 8, Margarito won by unanimous decision over Robert Garcia to raise his record to 38-6 with 27 knockouts.

With the demand of his new job as congressman of Sarangani province, Pacquiao (51-3-2) may spend most of his training in Manila, with chief trainer Freddie Roach coming over middle of September.

Roach will be flying in with physical conditioning expert Alex Ariza and several sparring partners, reportedly to be headed by unbeaten and popular Mexican Julio Chavez Jr.

After whipping himself into shape, Pacquiao will wind up his preparation with a three-week stint at Roach’s Wild Card Gym in Hollywood. - Phil Daily Inquirer

Technology / Indian Version of iPad
July 25, 2010, 06:13:18 PM
The Indian government has unveiled the prototype of an iPad-like touch-screen laptop, with a price tag of $35 (£23), which it hopes to roll out next year.

Aimed at students, the tablet supports web browsing, video conferencing and word processing, say developers.

Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said a manufacturer was being sought for the gadget, which was developed by India's top IT colleges.

An earlier cheap laptop plan by the same ministry came to nothing.

The device unveiled on Thursday has no hard disk, using a memory card instead, like a mobile phone, and can run on solar power, according to reports. - BBC

Police had been trying to stop people reaching the parade area because of overcrowding.

But the revellers panicked at a tunnel entrance. About 100 people were also injured, dozens seriously.

Police and city officials have launched an investigation into what sparked off the disaster.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has sent her condolences to the family and friends of the victims.

World Daily News / Bear Stuck in a Car
July 25, 2010, 12:14:27 AM

If you think you've heard it all, follow this tale of a hungry black bear who went for a ride, literally.

Douglas County (Colorado) Sheriff's deputies early Friday got a call about a honking car and a commotion inside. Perhaps it was teenagers or a thief, they thought as they approached Ralph Story's 2008 Toyota Corolla.

It turns out it was a thief, albeit the furry variety.

The deputies' first clue to something unusual was that the car was 125 feet below its normal parking spot in the driveway of the Storys' Larkspur home, which sits on five acres.

Imagine their further surprise when they turned on their flashlights and got a peek inside.

It was a full-grown black bear, also known as ursus americanus.

Working in the garden. Caught in traffic. Having fun on vacation. Caring for a loved one. Whatever people are doing around the world on Saturday, YouTube wants to see it.

The video sharing website Saturday launched a new project, "Life in a Day," to collect glimpses of people's lives and edit them into a feature film to be shown at next year's Sundance Film Festival.

The basic rules are simple: Footage cannot include any trademarks or copyrighted material, but it can be any length and on any format -- though the higher quality, the better.

Everything must also be recorded Saturday, 7/24 -- or 24/7, as the date appears in many places around the world.

"The most important thing: Be yourself," says Kevin Macdonald, director of "The Last King of Scotland" and "State of Play," who will review the contributions with a team of editors.

The most compelling and distinctive footage will be edited into an experimental documentary film produced by Oscar-nominated director Ridley Scott, the man behind movies like "Black Hawk Down," "Thelma & Louise," and "Aliens."

The film will premiere at Sundance in January and be available to view on YouTube. Those whose footage gets selected for the film will be listed as co-directors and could even attend the film festival to see it, YouTube said.

Scott said he wants contributors to think about how they feel when they're filming something. For instance, "Really think about why that sunrise makes you happy or why that sunset makes you sad," he says in a video promoting the project. - cnn

Hundreds of protesters will gather worldwide Saturday to rally against the imprisonment and possible execution of an Iranian woman convicted of adultery.

The case of Sakineh Mohammedie Ashtiani has drawn international attention. She was convicted of adultery in 2006 and faces the possibility of execution.

Ashtiani was originally sentenced to death by stoning, but it was put on hold earlier this month after an international outcry.

Despite the sentencing delay, human rights activists want to remind the world of Ashtiani's plight, said Mina Ahadi, chairman of the International Committee Against Execution and Stoning, one of the group's leading Saturday's protests.

"The fact is, the execution can still happen," Ahadi said. "And, often times in Iran, these types of executions will happen without any notice."

More than 30 cities will participate in "International Sakineh Mohammedie Ashtiani Day" at 2 p.m. local time. Cities holding rallies include Washington, New York, London, Paris, Berlin and Ottawa, organizers said.

Organizers hope the rallies will help free Ashtiani and intensify the international support she gained earlier when her case was widely publicized.

"International pressure is what causes change," Ahadi said. "The authorities in Iran aren't immune to this pressure -- we want to release Ashtiani, and we think these rallies are a huge factor in doing so." - CNN
