June 07, 2015, 11:18:24 PM
Narendra Modi further stated that "Yoga embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well being."  In suggesting June 21, which is the Summer Solstice, as the International Day of Yoga, Narendra Modi had said that the date is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and has special significance in many parts of the world.

From the perspective of yoga, the Summer Solstice marks the transition to Dakshinayana. The first full moon after Summer Solstice is known as Guru Poornima. According to Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, in the yogic lore, the first transmission of yoga by Shiva, the first Guru, is said to have begun on this day. Dakshinayana is also considered a time when there is natural support for those pursuing spiritual practices. Govind Gurbani Yog Guru / Vice President of Rajasthan Swasthya Yog Parisad Jaipur India informed that on 21 June fifty thousand followers of Yoga in Rajasthan will perform Yoga. --Wiki

June 21 was declared as the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 2014. Yoga, a 6,000+-year-old physical, mental and spiritual practice having its origin in India (Bharat), aims to transform body and mind. The declaration came after the call for the adoption of 21 June as International Day of Yoga by Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi during his address to UN General Assembly on September 27, 2014 wherein he stated:

"Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us deal with climate change. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day."

History / The callousness of Richard Nixon
June 07, 2015, 03:46:22 PM
In 1971, tensions were flaring between the military government of Pakistan and the government of India. India and Pakistan have had issues for centuries, but due to increasing problems between the countries, there seemed to be war on the horizon. Pakistan at the time was a close economic and political ally of the United States, while India held a lesser position. Despite the Muslim dictatorship of the country, President Nixon and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger decided to provide economic and military support for Pakistan in the event of a war (which there was later that year).

However, the weapons which were secretly given to the Pakistani government were used for a much more sinister purposeâ€"the genocide of the Bengali people. It’s estimated that nearly 200,000 people were killed by Pakistan, and according to documents by the State Department, neither Nixon nor Kissinger seemed to care. The slaughtering did nothing to stop the United States from continuing its support. The private US investments (many of the companies which were in Pakistan donated money to the Nixon campaign) seemed to be more important than the lives of the Bengali people.

At the time, the Indian government was receiving support from the Soviet Union, and the White House Tapes revealed the feelings of the president: Nixon once said that India needed “a mass famine.” When Kenneth Keating, a Republican serving as ambassador to India, confronted Nixon about the suffering of the Bengali people, Nixon called him “a traitor.” Finally, this all came to a head when India and Pakistan went to war. The cost of Nixon’s support for Pakistan was the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives in the region, for which he showed a callousness which displayed his lack of remorse for his lethal actions. -- http://listverse.com/

Brazilian pups have been given a new leash on life, thanks to these "Paw-blo Picasso" artworks. The clever canines created the masterpieces by shaking their coats after being covered in animal-friendly paint. By being positioned close to the canvases, they sent splatters of paint across the boards in spectacular fashion.

Each pet-size Jackson Pollock was a shelter pup, and the stunning slow-motion video and high-speed photography were used to show off their skills in hopes of finding them new owners. After an exhibition called "Canismo" that highlighted their work, five of the eight puppies from Sao Paulo were adopted.

The project is the brainchild of Brazilian artists Gabriel Morais, Leandro Bordoni, Hugo Veiga, Diego Machado and Renato Zandona. While looking for a way to make art that would benefit the community, they were also able to give the dogs new homes.

Morais said: "The concept was born from a serious issue: People prefer to buy a dog because of its breed, instead of adopting. The combination of different colors in the paintings shows the mixture of breeds as random and as beautiful as each mongrel.

"The dogs weren't easy to work with, but it was less complicated than we thought because a professional dog trainer was on set. Dogs are so easy to love because they give you everything and ask for nothing in return. There is a quote by Bob Barker that sums it up perfectly: 'A person who has never owned a dog has missed a wonderful part of life.'"

Tidoy,

Ug kini maoy kanunay hinungdan sa among panag-away.

Book Reviews / Re: Welcome to the Monkey House
June 05, 2015, 04:50:18 PM
And yet he treats the idea of ethical birth control with the most irony here. The omniscient narrator explains that, "the pills were ethical because they didn't interfere with a person's ability to reproduce, which would have been unnatural and immoral. All the pills did was take every bit of pleasure out of sex. Thus did science and morals go hand in hand" (31). Of course, Vonnegut and the reader know that science and morals have not historically gone hand in hand, but have rather almost always worked at odds in most debates. Consider Galileo or the evolution controversy, for instance. Secondly, Vonnegut expects us to know that sex without pleasure is quite unappealing. Through his use of irony, Vonnegut compels the reader to question whether the government's mandate is, in fact, more "unnatural and immoral" than the birth control itself (31). By forcing us to consider the absurdity of the government's position, Vonnegut leads us to consider the absurdity of other similarly moral strictures that we might encounter in everyday life.

Finally, the approach to the rape scene reveals the sexist misconceptions of the time in which Vonnegut wrote this story. In particular, Vonnegut's view of women is (unintentionally) patronizing. The narrator states unironically that Billy the Poet is attracted to Hostesses in Ethical Suicide Parlors, as if sexual assault were interchangeable with sexual attraction. When Nancy tells Billy the Poet that he makes her feel like an object rather than like a person, he answers that she can "thank the pills for that," as if sexism is only a problem due to the ethical birth control pills (41). After raping Nancy, just as he has raped all the other women in his gang, Billy is treated as the story's voice of reason. And when explaining that wives have always suffered a difficult wedding night, he seems to accept the patriarchal idea that a virginal women has little agency in her own sexuality. The power that Billy has over Nancy and the other Hostesses, the way that he explains the situation to her as if she is a child, and her switch from abhorrence to silent submission are not problematized here, suggesting a rather unbalanced view of sexual politics.

This story is one of several that takes its inspiration from the problem of overpopulation. A real problem even today, overpopulation often allows Vonnegut to empower his fictional governments with excessive power. In this story, the Earth is full of 17 billion human beings, most of whom are unemployed because nearly all work can be accomplished by machines. As the narrator explains, "Practically everything was the Government. Practically everything was automated, too" (34). The implicit suggestion is that governments exploit realistic fears in order to justify their extreme control over individuals.

And what this type of world robs humanity of is its natural, human quality. The tragic element of this situation - wherein humans have been replaced by machines - is particularly clear when Billy and Nancy walk below the Howard Johnson's restaurant: in order to replicate the sounds of humans working in the kitchen, a tape recorder plays conversations and kitchen noises for guests. But this tape recorder is decidedly not human and, as a machine, cannot offer Nancy any help.

Another of Vonnegut's common motifs present here is that of ethical suicide. The flipside of making life too comfortable for ourselves is that people tend not to die. (See "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" for a similar treatment of this theme.)

Book Reviews / Re: Welcome to the Monkey House
June 05, 2015, 04:49:21 PM
Vonnegut exaggerates this type of morality for comic effect, suggesting that the overly-moral set has an unrealistic sense of how sex affects a person. In contrast to those good citizens who take the mandated ethical birth control, the nothingheads are described as "bombed out of their skulls with the sex madness that came from taking nothing" (33). The idea of "sex madness" is necessarily absurd, considering that sexuality is so natural.

The sexual strictures in the story are criticized not only for denying human nature, but also for working against human individuality, another central theme in Vonnegut's work. By numbing everyone's sex drive, the government has effectively equalized people, similar to the situation in "Harrison Bergeron." Taken this way, Billy the Poet becomes a powerfully rebellious leader, one whose mission is not just the reemergence of sexuality, but also of individuality.

from http://www.gradesaver.com/

"Welcome to the Monkey House" is a perfect example of Vonnegut's signature style of comic science fiction, a style that digresses from the science fiction tradition. Whereas traditional science fiction is often noted for its seriousness, Vonnegut peppers his descriptions of a bizarre and terrifying world with absurdist humor. For example, after describing Nancy and Mary as "at least six feet tall," the omniscient narrator notes that, "America had changed in many ways, but it had yet to adopt the metric system" (32). When Billy the Poet, disguised as the Foxy Grandpa, tells Nancy the story of J. Edgar Nation - the inventor of ethical birth control - he includes the detail that the man had eleven children himself. Much like many traditional science fiction stories, "Welcome to the Monkey House" exploits an ugly possibility born out of a recognizable human quality. Whether or not Vonnegut's use of humor heightens or detracts from that ugliness is a matter of taste, but it is certainly unique.

The human quality which Vonnegut exaggerates for this story is sexuality, a particularly taboo topic in 1968, when the story was first published in Playboy. Vonnegut suggests here that fake, strict morality denies human nature, and hence cannot be tolerated. Though the story does feel dated in some ways, it remains extremely relevant considering how many forces in America - both in politics and in everyday life - continue to demean open sexuality as sinful. In fact, Vonnegut comments on the real-world nature of the problem through the name J. Edgar Nation, which combines those of J. Edgar Hoover, the FBI director at the time, and Carrie Nation, who fought for Prohibition.

By May B. Miasco/FPL (The Freeman) | Updated June 5, 2015 - 12:00am

CEBU, Philippines - Due to the prolonged El Niño phenomenon, the faithful will come to unite in praying the obligatory prayer requesting for downpour as the Archdiocese of Cebu recently publicizes the “Oratio Imperata” â€" a prayer for rain.

The Catholic Church wanted to emphasize that the communal prayer is regarded as “unique” since it was brought forth owing to the constant requests of various sectors in the community.

“This is one prayer that was requested. I think the Church cannot refuse that since it is a request from the majority. The Church, being the Mother of the multitude, we will have to provide the prayer that is needed,” said Cebu Archdiocesan spokesperson Monsignor  Joseph Tan.

The obligatory prayer, affirmed by Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma, is an adaptation from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines’ communal prayers dated August 2007 and February 2010.

Tan said in an interview with reporters that their initial plan was to publish the prayer in a weekly newsletter of the Archdiocese of Cebu, “Ang Bag-ong Lungsoranon.”

However, he said some religious members suggested providing copies of the prayer in the Archbishop Palace where local parishes can get a copy.

Freeman ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch:
Tan said further that once the local parishes could take hold of the copy, they can apply it right away.

“As soon as possible, mahimong karon na magamit na ang pag-ampo pero I think mas madungog ni sa kadaghanan karon nang Domingo kay maoy tingsimba sa kadaghanan,” he said.

He said communal prayer asking for rain will have to be recited until such time the request is granted.

“Kanang ulan nga makabungog jud nga maoy motambal sa problema nato sa tubig o sa atong kahimtang. Depende kun unsay dagan sa panahon, I think this will take in place until such time nga mausab ang dagan sa panahon, kaning huwaw nga naa karon maundang tungod sa uwan,” Tan said.  (FREEMAN)

You are not separate from the fulfillment of your dreams. You are in fact the person through whom that fulfillment can be most easily and most magnificently expressed.

WASHINGTON: Chimpanzees have the cognitive abilities required for cooking, which were believed to be limited to humans, and the primates even choose to hoard raw vegetables if they know they will have the chance to 'cook' them later on, according to a new research.

Scientists found that chimpanzees prefer the taste of cooked food, can defer gratification while waiting for it and choose to hoard raw vegetables if they know they will have the chance to eat cooked vegetables later on.

The transition to cooked food is widely viewed as an important evolutionary milestone because it would have allowed our primitive forebears to expand their diet and extract far more calories, reducing the amount of time required for foraging and chewing.

While various animals have been shown to have a preference for cooked vegetables and meats, which are softer and easier to digest, the intellectual abilities required to make the leap to preparing cooked food had been thought to be limited to humans. "What's particularly interesting about cooking is it's something we all do, but it involves a number of capacities that, even without the context of cooking, are thought to be uniquely human," said Felix Warneken, a psychologist at Harvard University and co-author of the study.

In a series of experiments at the Jane Goodall Institute's Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Sanctuary in the Democratic Republic of Congo, wild-born chimpanzees were given the opportunity to prepare food using a 'cooking device'.

This was a plastic lunchbox with a false bottom, which researchers used to "transform" raw sweet potato placed inside by the chimpanzees into a cooked slice of a similar size. Overall, the apes chose cooked potato nearly 90% per cent of the time when they were given a choice and they were nearly as keen when they had to wait one minute while it was "cooked" by the researcher. pti (who shook the plastic box ten times).

The chimps continued to opt for the cooked option 60 per cent of the time when they had to carry the food some distance in order to place it in the "oven".

Around half the chimps chose to hoard raw potato - setting aside up to 28 slices - when they knew they would be presented with the option of cooking it later on, 'The Guardian' reported.

"Usually chimpanzees just eat what they can get right away and would never give up edible food, so it was remarkable to see that," Warneken said.

The researchers said that if the ability to cook emerged early on in our evolution, this may even have been the motivation for harnessing fire in the first place, possibly after humans had first got a taste for food prepared opportunistically on natural fires.

"The evidence from our cognitive studies suggests that, even before controlling fire, early hominins understood its benefits and could reason about the outcomes of putting food on fire," said Alexandra Rosati, the study's co-author and an evolutionary biologist at Yale University.
