How it works

A typical CBT program for insomnia will first analyze a patient's own insomnia. Then it might incorporate some sleep hygiene habits (don't read in bed, make sure your room is dark and cool) and help patients set a sleep schedule. A program will also educate an insomniac on relaxation techniques and help people learn new attitudes towards bedtime, to eliminate insomnia-causing anxiety â€" changing those negative thoughts is key.

In a post on the New York Times's Upshot blog, Austin Frakt analyzes the various studies comparing CBT to a wide variety of drugs. The vast majority of medical evidence says that for most people, CBT works better and is preferable to drugs. Plus, it doesn't come with dangerous side effects, including the risk of overdose and death.

Therapy doesn't necessarily entail expensive doctor's visits, either. Frakt's doctor pointed him to an online CBT treatment program for insomnia. Online programs that change thought patterns and behaviors can work for insomnia, just as they can for depression and anxiety.

Many of the strategies employed in CBT for insomnia are a part of other techniques for falling asleep faster, like learning to comfortably relax in bed without trying to fall asleep, eliminating the anxiety that causes insomnia.

"Like a patch on faulty software, C.B.T. reorients one's thinking and behavior so that sleep is first thought to be, and then soon after actually is, a more positive experience," writes Frakt. "Drugs, on the other hand, just treat insomniacs' symptoms without addressing the underlying cause, which is why the relief they provide may be less durable."

Many of the more than 30% of Americans and people around the world who suffer from insomnia would do almost anything to sleep better.

That's why there's a huge market for sleeping pills like Ambien and Lunesta, along with a whole wall at your local pharmacy of "natural supplements" like melatonin, valerian root, kava, and more.

Sleeping better is absolutely worth it: you'll be happier, more alert, a safer driver, less likely to suffer from physical ailments as well as anxiety and depression, and much more.

But even though taking a pill might seem like a simple solution â€" and they're backed up with lots of ads to make you reach for them first â€" there are ways to deal with insomnia that are clinically proven to work better for most people.

The most effective overall strategy for dealing with insomnia is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), an approach that analyzes the thoughts and behaviors that make it hard to sleep and then works on improving them.

The Fermi paradox (or Fermi's paradox) is the apparent contradiction between high estimates of the probability of the existence of extraterrestrial civilization and humanity's lack of contact with, or evidence for, such civilizations. The basic points of the argument, made by physicists Enrico Fermi and Michael H. Hart, are:

The Sun is a typical star, and relatively young. There are billions of stars in the galaxy that are billions of years older.

With high probability, some of these stars will have Earth-like planets. Assuming the Earth is typical, some of these planets may develop intelligent life.

Some of these civilizations may develop interstellar travel, a technology Earth is investigating even now (such as the 100 Year Starship).

Even at the slow pace of currently envisioned interstellar travel, the galaxy can be completely colonized in a few tens of millions of years.

According to this line of thinking, the Earth should already have been colonized, or at least visited. But Fermi saw no convincing evidence of this, nor of signs of intelligence (see Empirical resolution attempts) elsewhere in our galaxy or (to the extent it would be detectable) elsewhere in the observable universe. Hence Fermi's question, "Where is everybody?" --Wiki

Why millionaire Christopher Foster slaughtered his family
By ROGER GRAEF FOR MAILONLINE
UPDATED: 23:17 GMT, 3 April 2009

Millionaire Christopher Foster murdered his wife Jill and daughter Kirstie, 15, before committing suicide, a coroner ruled yesterday.

Mr Foster shot his family and their pet dogs and horses before setting his £1.2million mansion ablaze in August last year. Earlier, the court had been shown the last actions of Mr Foster, caught on CCTV security cameras on the night of the blaze, as he walked around the grounds of his home in Oswestry, Shropshire, carrying what is thought to be a bucket, a rifle and a battery pack in preparation for setting the fire.

Celebration: Salute to Filipino-Chinese friendship, relationship
http://www.mb.com.ph/
June 8, 2015

June 9 is Filipino-Chinese Friendship Day, pursuant to Proclamation No. 148 issued on January 22, 2002, to commemorate the signing of a joint communiqué that established 40 years ago on June 9, 1975, diplomatic relations between the Philippines and the People’s Republic of China, and to focus on the longtime friendship, strong multifaceted ties, and cultural and economic cooperation between the two countries.

Philippines-China relations began in 200 BC when traders, migrants, and travelers from China sailed on ships manned by Filipino islanders to Asia and the Philippines. Intermarriage between Filipinos and Chinese is among the highest in Southeast Asia.

The first celebration of Filipino-Chinese Friendship Day on June 9, 2002, coinciding with inauguration of the Filipino-Chinese Friendship Bridge and Manila-Beijing Friendship Bridge in Binondo Chinatown. Since then, the annual event has been organized by the Federation of Filipino-Chinese chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc., in partnership with Chinese Filipino Business Club, the Chinese Charitable Association, schools and community groups. Center of festivities is Binondo Chinatown, where cultural shows, dance numbers, musical performances, and trade fairs showcase the rich Chinese culture. A Fil-Chi Race is sponsored by Fil-Chi Cycling Federation.

The organizers dropped the celebration of the Filipino-Chinese Friendship Day and the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the Philippines and China.

Instead, the FFCCCII decided to just celebrate the commemoration of the Philippines' Independence Day due to the tension between the two countries over the territorial dispute.

"Nakikita naman natin sa West Philippine Sea, the tension seems to be escalating so we think as Filipinos we think this is not [a] good time naman," FFCCCII President Angel Ngu told members of the press in a televised interview.

President Benigno Aquino III, meanwhile, graced the event and gave a speech on the long-standing history of the Filipino-Chinese friendship.

The president noted that the ties between the Philippines and China must be based on mutual respect.

Last week, Aquino likened China anew with Nazi Germany in a speech he made during his state visit to Japan. The statement irked Chinese media and Beijing officials, insisting that the reclamation over the disputed waters is not a move to spark conflict.

The celebration of the Filipino-Chinese friendship day and the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Philippine-China diplomatic relations were cancelled after Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua decided not to attend the event organized by the Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry on Monday night. MANILA, Philippines - Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua did not attend the supposed three-in-one event of the Filipino-Chinese businessmen to celebrate the two countries' ties.

The dispute over the West Philippine Sea allegedly caused the absence of Ziao at the event of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII) on Monday night.

Courtney told the police that her parents learned about her experience last December. Her mother destroyed her cellular phone and Courtney stopped going to Glover’s place.

After she bought a new phone, Glover allegedly communicated with her again last month.

The recruiter, who lives in the same neighborhood as the girls, will also be made to face criminal complaints.

“It’s a sad reality that the children of these ages are exposed to this kind of vulnerability,” Truya-Abarientos said. “Their parents cannot give them money to buy school supplies, naningkamot sila sa ilang kaugalingon nga makakuha og kwarta (so they do what they can, on their own, to make some money).”

Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale, who co-chairs the Provincial Children and Women’s Commission, said that the four girls will be debriefed and assisted.

“We are telling the community that trafficking is not OK in any community here in Cebu,” said the CLB spokesperson.

Caught

A Bogo City police team applied for the search warrant at 2 p.m. last Wednesday and was ready to serve it some five hours later.

“When our police officers barged into the house, the suspect was inside his room with his short pants lowered, and the girls were also inside,” Oliver said.

All four girls, residents of Bogo, still had their clothes on.

Oliver said that the police found condoms, cellular phones, a compact disc, camera and sex performance enhancers in the premises.

Glover had allegedly paid each girl P1,800, while the recruiter took P500.

CLB spokesperson Noemi Truya-Abarientos said that the American was believed to have victimized more than 10 girls.

What led to his arrest was Courtney’s decision last week to seek help from the police, the CLB lawyer added.

By KEVIN A. LAGUNDA and OSCAR C. PINEDA

A 16-YEAR-OLD girl who feared that her sisters might be the next victims reported to the police that an American senior citizen forced her to have sex with him in June last year.

Her complaint led to the arrest last Wednesday night of Harold Glover, 69, in his rented house in Barangay Taytayan, Bogo City.

Courtney (not her real name) said that a recruiter convinced her to meet Glover during her birthday last year, saying he would only touch her, nothing more. She needed some money to get school supplies, the girl told the Children’s Legal Bureau (CLB).

Instead, the man allegedly forced himself on her.

This week, the girl agreed to meet with him again. But the American, a former security officer who has reportedly been living in the country for 10 years, didn’t know she would be arriving with a team of law enforcers and anti-trafficking campaigners.

Courtney and three 15-year-old girls were rescued by the police, CLB and Provincial Children and Women’s Commission.

Chief Insp. Richard Oliver, Bogo City police chief, said they will file complaints against Glover for violating the laws against human trafficking, child pornography and child abuse.

“Based on our initial inspection, on his cellular phone there were videos of the subject having sex with minors,” Oliver said.

Henry the Hexapus was a six-limbed octopus found by British marine scientists in 2008. The name alludes to King Henry VIII, who had six wives.

The octopus was found off the coast of North Wales in a lobster pot, and was held in captivity at the Blackpool Sea Life Centre in North West England. Its unusual number of arms was not immediately noticed, and appears to have resulted from a natal anomaly, rather than a physical accident.

Developmental biologist PZ Myers called the defect "an ordinary sort of error." After being taken from the sea, he was transferred to the Anglesey Sea Zoo, which, in turn, donated him to the Blackpool Centre, where it was featured in an exhibition entitled "Suckers". An aquarium spokeswoman stated that "It's a lovely little thing." --Wiki

Against such a view, Allam stated that he was "convinced that the indigenous people should be entitled to enjoy the right and the duty to preserve their culture and their heritage," a position the Church has not only not publicly aligned itself with, but has placed itself in practical opposition to.

"I am opposed to that sort of doing good that makes the Church stand as the highest protector of immigrants, including and especially illegal immigrants," Allam wrote.  "I am for the ordering society in accordance with rules, and the first rule is that in Italy we must first ensure the good of the Italians," thus "correctly applying the exhortation of Jesus to 'love your neighbor as you love yourself.'"  Charity for Allam begins at home and embraces Italians first and aliens second.

In Allam's view, Islam has to be rigorously opposed as "incompatible with our civilization and fundamental human rights," which are based upon Christian values.  It is of the highest imperative to have a more steeled resolve against Islam.  "I am more convinced than ever," Allam wrote, "that Europe will end up being subjugated to Islam just like what happened beginning in the seventh century on the other side of the Mediterranean."

His reference, of course, is to the Islamic conquest of the Middle East and Northern African, including such Christian centers such as Damascus, Antioch, and Alexandria.  Magdi Allam is not the only one who has expressed such concern.

Magdi Allam also complained of what he characterized as "papalotry" arising from an undue and excessive attachment to the person of the Pope which places him above criticism for practical decisions which do not have anything to do with his teachings ex cathedra.

Finally, it appears that Allam has trouble with some of the Church's disciplines and moral teachings.  In his article, he accuses the Church as being "practically tempted" (fisiologicamente tentata) by evil, pointing to its public positions regarding morality which "requires behaviors that are in conflict with human nature, such as priestly celibacy, abstaining from sexual relations outside of marriage, the indissolubility of marriage, in addition to the temptation of money."  This cryptic comment suggests that he rejects the Church's positions on the disciplinary or moral matters.

"I will continue to believe in Jesus, whom I have always loved and will continue to identify with Christianity as the civilization that more than any other brings man closer to God who chose to become man."  The Jesus Allam loves is not clearly the Jesus as the Church sees him, but Jesus as Allam sees him.

It appears that Allam has forgotten a basic tenet of Catholicism and traditional, at least traditional Western, Christianity: ubi Petrus, ibi ecclesia; ubi ecclesia, ibi Christi est.  Where Peter is, there is the Church.  Where the Church is, there is Christ.

There are hundreds of gates into the Church observed G. K. Chesterton.  Unfortunately, there are hundreds of gates out, as well.  We can always come up with some grievance to excuse our lack of fidelity, to rationalize our loss of Faith, to justify our disobedience to the Lord.

Whatever his frustrations with the public stance of the Church on issues that affect Italy's national interests, matters upon which the faithful can legitimately argue and even differ with the hierarchy since they largely involve areas of political prudence, it seems that Allam has traded in his Catholic heritage for a mess of Italian right-wing, nationalistic pottage.

Bad move, Magdi.  Bad move.  It's not smart to join the ranks of Esau and go into the wilderness alone.  I'd rather wrestle with God like Jacob and even put up with the treason of the clerics, so long as I always keep the Faith and never break ranks from the Body of Christ.  I shall pray for you and for your return.

Italy's Famous Catholic Convert From Islam Leaves the Catholic Church
http://www.catholic.org/
By Andrew M. Greenwell, Esq.
3/27/2013

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX (Catholic Online) - Five years ago, in a highly-publicized event, Magdi Cristiano Allam, an Egyptian-born Muslim, naturalized Italian citizen, former contributor to Manifesto and Repubblica, and vice-director of the Corriere della Sera, left Islam and converted to Catholicism.  The event received significant press coverage because this notable convert was baptized by then-Pope Benedict XVI at St. Peter's Basilica during the Easter Vigil on March 22, 2008.

Allam was instructed in the Catholic doctrine by Archbishop Rino Fisichella, head of the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization, and was sponsored by Maurizio Lupi, a high-ranking member of the Forza Italia party, a political party that was founded by Silvio Berlusconi, the former prime minister.  You'd have thought with that behind him, the Faith would have stuck.

Unfortunately, after five years as a Catholic, Allam has announced in a very public way that he has left the Catholic Church.  "I believe in Jesus . . . . but I no longer believe in the Church," he wrote in an editorial in the Italian daily Il Giornale.

"My conversion to Catholicism, which came at the hands of Benedict XVI during the Easter Vigil on March 22, 2008," Allam explains in the Monday-edition of the right-wing Milan daily newspaper Il Giornale, "I now consider over, in line with the end of his pontificate."

While he describes his decision as "extremely painful," he attributes the decision to a variety of factors, all of which he addresses in his editorial.

A number of things apparently triggered Allam's decision.  The most important and overriding reason in Allam's view was the Church's accommodating policies regarding Islam, a position which is resulting he says in practical dhimmitude and impairing the proclamation of the Gospel.

Other reasons include the Church's anti-national positions regarding immigration which hamper the Italian desire to preserve their culture from foreign elements caused by illegal immigration.  Also in play is what Allam calls the recent "papalotry" arising from out of the recent resignation of Benedict XVI and the election of Pope Francis.  Finally, Allam appears to have rejected some of the Church's teachings on moral theology and ecclesiastical disciplines.

As Allam explains it: "The thing that drove me away from the Church more than any other factor was religious relativism, in particular the legitimization of Islam as a true religion."  In Allam's view, Islam is an "intrinsically violent ideology," and does not deserve the respect that it is getting from those responsible for fashioning the Church's public stance regarding Islam including the papacy and the curia.

It is an error of first proportion to legitimize even implicitly Islam as a true religion where "Allah is a true God, and Muhammad a true prophet, the Qur'an a sacred text, and mosques as places of worship."  This, he says, is nothing less than "genuine suicidal folly" and a practical relativism.

As examples of this excessive accommodation, Allam pointed to Blessed John Paul II's controversial kissing of the Qur'an, and Benedict XVI's placing his hand on the Qur'an while facing Mecca when praying in the Blue Mosque in Instanbul.

It is clear to Allam that this sort of accommodation will increase under Pope Francis, who spoke early in his pontificate about the Muslims "who adore the one God, living and merciful," and who has announced that he looks forward to continuing dialogue especially with Islam.

While the Church speaks--in the words of Benedict XVI--of the "dictatorship of relativism," Allam observed, "the truth is that the Church is, from a practical [literally, physiological] perspective, relativist (fisiologicamente relativista)."

Moreover, in Allam's view, the Church's message against the dictatorship of relativism and in favor of a confident Christian message is encumbered by the fact that it recognizes and promotes modern secular society, with its tolerant acceptance of multiculturalism, itself a relativistic secular social creed.

Additionally, he complains that the Church has taken a globalist and therefore anti-nationalistic, pro-immigration, and hence anti-Italian ideology.  As a result of these positions, the Church in Allam's view, has pitted herself against the common good of nation states, in particularly--as far as Allam is concerned--Italy.

"I am opposed to globalism," Allam stated, "which opens unconditional national borders based on the principle that humanity as a whole must be conceived as brothers and sisters, that the whole world should be viewed as a single land available to all mankind."

The breakout was reminiscent of the one depicted in "The Shawshank Redemption," the 1994 movie based on a Stephen King story.

Cuomo, who was scheduled to attend Saturday's Belmont Stakes to see American Pharoah's bid for thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown, canceled those plans and traveled to Dannemora.

"You look at the precision of the operation. It was truly extraordinary," Cuomo said at a press conference outside the prison, known as "Little Siberia" for its remote location 320 miles north of New York City and the region's cold climate.

About 200 law enforcement officers were searching the area around Dannemora using dogs and backed by police helicopters, authorities said. Police were asking people to be on the lookout and alert authorities if they saw the two men.

Cuomo stressed that no one should approach them. "These are not people to be trifled with."

The convicts were identified as Richard Matt, 48, serving 25 years to life for three counts of murder, kidnapping and robbery. He stands 6 feet tall, 210 pounds and had black hair and a tattoo reading "Mexico Forever".

The other prisoner, David Sweat, 34, is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the murder of a sheriff's deputy. He is 5'11", 165 pounds and has brown hair and tattoos on his left bicep and right fingers.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A manhunt was underway for two convicted murderers who pulled off an elaborate overnight escape from adjoining cells in a New York state maximum security prison near the border with Canada, police said on Saturday.

Prison guards discovered that the men were missing during an early morning bed check in the Clinton Correctional Facility, in Dannemora, about 40 miles (65 km) south of the Canadian province of Quebec. Both inmates are considered a danger to the public, state police said.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo described the escape, the first from the prison's maximum security facility in its 150 year history, as "sophisticated."

The two men were in adjoining cells and cut a hole through the back wall, crawling through the opening overnight, a prison official said.

They scaled a catwalk, then used power tools to drill through metal walls and a steam pipe, finally weaving through interior tunnels and coming out through a manhole cover on the street, Cuomo said.

The men had left items in their beds, like clothing, to make it appear they were asleep, he said.

It was not yet known how they obtained power tools or figured out how to make their way through the tunnels to the street.
