Since appearing in this newspaper last month, Ben Wilson, the Barnet artist who has taken to painting chewing gum which has been spat onto the pavement, has become something of a celebrity.

Last week the BBC cameras were shooting him in High Street Barnet, and he has also appeared in the Evening Standard and on BBC Radio all as a result of being featured in this newspaper.

He has acquired quite a cult following, and he told Between the Lines that people have been stopping by and making requests, giving him subjects to paint on the gum.

So far he has done cups of tea, elephants and women in bikinis, and has been applauded by many people for trying to turn something ugly into something artistic.

Always Seeking

Our thirsting for God is never over because Holy Mystery has more fullness of life than we can ever hold and because our human longing never ends.

Seven Deadly Sins: Sloth or 'Acedia'
By Jeri Holladay
3/18/2009
Catholic Online (www.catholic.org)

A sin that believes in nothing, cares for nothing, seeks to know nothing, interferes with nothing, enjoys nothing, hates nothing, finds purpose in nothing, lives for nothing, and remains alive because there is nothing for which it will die.

The darkest side of sloth, however, is its distaste for worship and prayer. Sometimes this aversion strikes at a very advanced stage of the spiritual life, but for most of us, it shows itself early on, after the euphoria of conversion or the sweetness of prayer wears off. We avoid God, just when we need Him most.
WICHITA, Kansas (Catholic Online) - At the beginning of Mass, we ask forgiveness for “what I have done and for what I have failed to do.” A bad act is usually obvious, but those omissions are hard to detect. Sloth is the black hole among the Seven Deadly Sins â€" a nothing where there should be something.

Dorothy Sayers describes sloth as “a sin that believes in nothing, cares for nothing, seeks to know nothing, interferes with nothing, enjoys nothing, hates nothing, finds purpose in nothing, lives for nothing, and remains alive because there is nothing for which it will die.” Sloth can masquerade as tolerance. It can also be very busy, but the activity of the slothful leads nowhere, simply marking time in a life that has no ultimate purpose. Many of the slothful end up in despair, a hopelessness that is distinct from clinical depression requiring medical attention.

The Catechism describes sloth as a culpable lack of physical or spiritual effort that can actually refuse the joy that comes from God. The slothful person is lukewarm towards, perhaps even repelled by, divine goodness and spiritual practices (Catechism #1866, 2094, 2733). The loss of one’s spiritual moorings manifests itself in flight from God and apathy in the service of one’s neighbor.

How can we overcome this most deadly vice? Mass society engenders a sense of powerlessness, but size need not leave us apathetic. It is possible to carve out a more human scale of life. Begin with your family, your parish, your neighborhood, your child’s school. Get involved. Contribute something,

In the midst of New York City’s millions, for example, a humanly sized community lived in my apartment building. We knew one another, knocked on doors when a neighbor had not been seen for a few days, brought chicken soup when one was sick, and had Christmas parties in the lobby.

This can be a tipping point in our spiritual lives. Either we grow in faith, hope and love, or we collapse into sloth and, perhaps, ultimate loss. What can we do to change this?

Resolve to spend time in prayer, at least a half an hour every day. If you find it distasteful, know that this is the deadly vice of sloth. Pray anyway. St. Jerome said that ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of God. Set aside time for prayerful study of Scripture. If you find this too burdensome, know that this is the deadly vice of sloth. Study anyway. The Cardinal virtue of Fortitude, “the virtue that ensures firmness in difficulties and constancy in the pursuit of the good” (Catechism #1808) is absolutely essential to your spiritual survival, especially when in the deadly grip of sloth.

Above all, do not skip Mass or forsake the Sacrament of Confession. It is precisely these life-giving Sacraments that sloth most tempts us to abandon. Those who attempt to live without them often sink into the despair of doubting whether there is a God, whether He loves them, whether He can forgive them, or whether life has any ultimate meaning.

The spiritual and corporal works of mercy lift us out of ourselves and into the work of God’s Kingdom. They are listed in the Catechism (#2447). Ask God to show you what your personal contribution should be to the work of the Church. Then do it faithfully and let God attend to the outcome.

Finally, the theological virtue of hope dissipates the lassitude of Sloth. In the classic movie Marty, a small group of friends hang out under the street light on Friday nights, each one asking in turn, “What do you want to do?” “I dunno. What do you want to do?” “I dunno.” The conversation, like their lives, is a closed circle turned in on itself, until Marty chooses to break the cycle by seeking the company of a plain young woman with a view to marriage and family life. The gift of self is a powerful act of hope that overturns the futility of milling around on the street corner.

Ultimately, hope in God and in eternal life makes our lives here and now meaningful, filled with purpose and joy. Hope is the preeminent virtue of the pilgrim Church, calling us to participate in God’s work of bringing streams forth in the desert as we make our way to the heavenly city.

Yes, we need to name God, yet, at the same time, we can calmly assert that human naming always fails to encompass Mystery in its fullness.

Tigum Bol-anon Tibuok Kalibutan (TBTK) 2009
Come July 16 to 26, the province of Bohol will again host Tigum Bol-anon Tibuok Kalibutan, a gathering of Boholanos from around the world, a continuing testament for our love for home and for going home.

The gathering will commence with an audience with the President at Malacañang on July 14 but will officially start in Bohol only on July 16. The ten-day program includes school reunions, pageants, a medical mission, a tree-planting activity, even an international cockfighting derby, and the famous Sandugo Festival.

The Sandugo Festival Street Dancing which will be held on Sunday, July 19, promises to be a really grand event not only because of the expected influx of foreign tourists but also with the presence of hundreds, if not thousands, of our province-mates who will be coming home in time for the TBTK.

For details of the activities, visit www.tbtk.org, the official website of the ten-day event. (Photo from www.tbtk.org)

The Bible story of the Annunciation
The story is told in Luke's Gospel, 1: 26-38.

In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary.

The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favoured! The Lord is with you."

Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.

But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favour with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end."

"How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?"

The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God."

"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me as you have said." Then the angel left her. BBC

Political implications of the Annunciation

Some feminist theologians find the story of the Assumption portrays women as unacceptably submissive and as colluding with the idea that "women's only claim to fame is the capacity to have babies." They interpret Mary's behaviour as demonstrating passive subordination to male power. Simone de Beauvoir wrote:

For the first time in human history the mother kneels before her son: she freely accepts her inferiority. This is the supreme masculine victory, consummated in the cult of the Virgin.
Simone de Beauvoir, The Second Sex, 1952
Other writers have a different interpretation. They don't see Mary as powerless before God, but instead as a woman who makes a free choice to accept God's task for her - a task she could have refused. Mary's acceptance of the role of servant is not, they teach, demeaning, and they point out that Jesus also regarded himself as a servant. And taking up the example of the disciples, they see Mary, through her act of faith, exercising her right to believe what she wants and to cooperate with God in his plan of salvation - a plan that he cannot carry out without her.

Other writers suggest that the story of the Annunciation emphasises the status of women, since in the Incarnation God enlists the help of a woman to create a child of vast importance, and gives men no part to play in this important work.

And in the Magnificat itself, Mary becomes the herald of Salvation, and takes Christianity into the spheres of politics and justice as the first spokesperson for the marginalised people who were the focus of Jesus, and are now the focus of Christians and the Church. BBC

The Annunciation and the liturgy

The story of the Annunciation has produced three important liturgical texts, the Ave Maria, the Angelus, and the Magnificat.

The angel's greeting to Mary, which is traditionally translated as "Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee," (in Latin Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum) is the opening of the Ave Maria, and a part of the Rosary prayers.
The Angelus consists of three Ave Marias, together with some additional material. It is said three times a day in the Roman Catholic Church.
The Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55) is the poem with which Mary responds to the Annunciation and celebrates the power of God. BBC

The Feast of the Annunciation

Mary and Jesus ©
The feast of the Annunciation marks the visit of the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, during which he told her that she would be the mother of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It is celebrated on 25 March each year.

More importantly, since it occurs 9 months before the birth of Jesus on Christmas Day, the Annunciation marks the actual incarnation of Jesus Christ - the moment that Jesus was conceived and that the Son of God became the son of the Virgin.

The festival has been celebrated since the 5th century AD.

The festival celebrates two things:

God's action in entering the human world as Jesus in order to save humanity
Humanity's willing acceptance of God's action in Mary's freely given acceptance of the task of being the Mother of God

The season of Lent is an opportunity to grow closer to God and contemplate the great love God shows us through Jesus Christ. My prayer this Lent is that I use this season to break myself of the habit of routine and use this extraordinary season to meditate on the influence of God in my life. I pray that I can recognize the opportunity Jesus extends to me every day and use the gifts given to me to bring life and abundance to my daily routine.

St. Lea
Feastday: March 22

A letter which St. Jerome wrote to St. Marcella provides the only information we have about St. Lea, a devout fourth century widow. Upon the death of her husband, she retired to a Roman monastery and ultimately became its Superior. Since his correspondence was acquainted with the details of St. Lea's life, St. Jerome omitted these in his letter. He concentrated instead on the fate of St. Lea in comparison with that of a consul who had recently died. "Who will praise the blessed Lea as she deserves? She renounced painting her face and adorning her head with shining pearls. She exchanged her rich attire for sackcloth, and ceased to command others in order to obey all. She dwelt in a corner with a few bits of furniture; she spent her nights in prayer, and instructed her companions through her example rather than through protests and speeches. And she looked forward to her arrival in heaven in order to receive her recompense for the virtues which she practiced on earth. "So it is that thence forth she enjoyed perfect happiness. From Abraham's bosom, where she resides with Lazarus, she sees our consul who was once decked out in purple, now vested in a shameful robe, vainly begging for a drop of water to quench his thirst. Although he went up to the capital to the plaudits of the people, and his death occasioned widespread grief, it is futile for the wife to assert that he has gone to heaven and possesses a great mansion there. The fact is that he is plunged into the darkness outside, whereas Lea who was willing to be considered a fool on earth, has been received into the house of the Father, at the wedding feast of the Lamb. "Hence, I tearfully beg you to refrain from seeking the favors of the world and to renounce all that is carnal. It is impossible to follow both the world and Jesus. Let us live a life of renunciation, for our bodies will soon be dust and nothing else will last any longer." Her feast day is March 22.

St. Enda
Feastday: March 21

Legend has him an Irishman noted for his military feats who was convinced by his sister St. Fanchea to renounce his warring activities and marry. When he found his fiancee dead, he decided to become a monk and went on pilgrimage to Rome, where he was ordained. He returned to Ireland, built churches at Drogheda, and then secured from his brother-in-law King Oengus of Munster the island of Aran, where he built the monastery of Killeaney, from which ten other foundations on the island developed. With St. Finnian of Clonard, Enda is considered the founder on monasticism in Ireland. His feast day is March 21.

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 news) - Family and friends aren't the only ones stopping by your house this month, some nasty germs seem to be making the rounds.

And 80 percent of infections and illness are caused by human contact.

Healthy Utah magazine just did a report on the top twelve germiest objects. And the article did not talk about public restrooms or shopping carts! Every object can be found right in your own home.

Let’s start with the television remote.

You touch it, your kids grab it, men won't let go of it and all that human contact can add up to a lot of germs.

Eileen Risk from the Salt Lake Valley Health Department says "Bacterias, viruses, the common cold virus, influenza viruses, they are all very common and can survive for up to two days on hard surfaces."

Speaking of hard surfaces, almost nothing comes in contact with your face as often as your telephone.

"If there are germs on the phone and that phone is by your mouth then you can injest the germs and it's a way to cause illness," Risk says.

Now for one of the nastiest spots in your home when it comes to germs, and it's not your toilet. It's the bathroom soap dispenser.

Researchers say you can get as many as ten million bacteria on your hands every time you pump, and that includes some staph infections.

Health experts say just make sure you are scrubbing before touching anything.

Risk says, "Germs are everywhere, and some germs actually keep you healthy but many do cause illness and they are through out your home."

Now for your germ battle plan: Salt Lake Valley Health Department says clean your remote, phone and computer key board at least once a week with a disinfectant wipe or spray. Sanitizer alone won't do the job, and clean more often, at least once a day, if anyone in your house is sick.

Hope this info will improve your general knowledge Datu.

I would love to come home Ondoy, but I´m caring for my old in-laws, I´m helping my ex. they are nice old couple and I couldn´t leave. My father in-law  suffers from Alzheimer disease and he is already bed-ridden (89), his wife has Parkinson. I prepare the meals and tries to do much since I have also a full-time job.
I´m active with the Butuan Global Foundation as a member of the board and this year we spearheaded a community cleaning contest( Libertad) which will end this coming May 2009. There will be lots of activities and I want to be with them, sayang kaajo! :(

ps
My father in-law loves Bohol, he came  in this province 5 times already.

Dili na madugay mouli na si Inday Ayessa sa Bohol! This is exciting if they meet face to face. What do you think will happen? Verbal attack or flying fists?
Knowing that Inday is a woman of good breeding, Datu will hear some tongue lashings in a fine way. ;D

This is maybe the case why some "more matured" women who are opting for younger men...sa pangagpas ko lang ha...  Grin Grin Grin

The word for this is stamina or staying power. As women loses fertility due to menopausal effect, the fear of getting pregnant lessens. This causes a higher libido which a man  in mid-fifties can´t keep up with. Mature women have accumulated experience and they know a lot better how to enjoy this game to the full.

The first 3 hours is the optimal way to get a goodnight´s sleep. We must dream in this phase. Failing to experience dreaming leads some mental illness.

How sweet of you! Salamat.
I know for sure you must be a romantic guy, you know how to touch a woman´s heart through fine articulation, an obvious sign of intelligence. God Bless.

Although we almost always sleep with our eyes closed, people can and do sleep with their eyes open.

Sleep is generally defined by the presence of certain types of electrical activity in the brain. When people are awake, the electrical activity of their brain, as measured by an electroencephalogram, is desynchronized and of low amplitude. As a person enters sleep, the pattern of their brainwaves changes from low amplitude, higher frequency waves to higher amplitude, lower frequency waves. Additionally, sleep is subdivided into different stages. These stages are defined by the frequency and amplitude of the electrical waves being generated by brain activity, and are also related to easily how a person can be aroused by an external stimulus. Finally, there is a separate stage of sleep called rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, which is characterized by a more "awake" looking brain wave pattern, eye movements, and dreaming.

Usually, when we sleep, our eyes are closed. In my view there are 2 primary reasons for this. First, distracting sensory stimuli (lights, noises, etc.) can interfere with sleep, and closing your eyes greatly reduces visual input. Second, closing your eyelids protects your eyes from foreign objects and from drying out during sleep.

That said, there are instances in which people may be asleep with open eyes. One good example is sleepwalking. Usually, a sleepwalker will initially get out of bed and walk around the room with their eyes open. As the episode continues, their behavior can get very complex. They can avoid objects, go to the bathroom, even clean the house. All during this time, an electroencephalogram would indicate that this person is completely asleep. I would imagine you could also see this sort of phenomenon in someone who had been sleep deprived for a long period of time. They might at times appear behaviorally awake when their brain wave patterns are sleep-like.

St Charles Borromeo

He died at Milan on the night of November 3-4, and was canonized in 1610. He was one of the towering figures of the Catholic Reformation, a patron of learning and the arts, and though he achieved a position of great power, he used it with humility, personal sanctity, and unselfishness to reform the Church, of the evils and abuses so prevalent among the clergy and the nobles of the times. His feast day is November 4th.

I was asking myself why? Last Pinas vacation, I ate 3 square meals a day. The couple who shares the house with me, was a bit surprised that after a week of good balance diet, we are eating less, but still 3 times a day. This is inherent in our eating habits.
If nutritious foods are served our body will not hunger much, it is all in our head.

Philippines: Focolare launches book by foundress

MANILA (UCAN) - Friends and members of the Focolare Movement commemorated the first death anniversary its foundress by launching a book of her writings in Manila.

Chiara Lubich, an Italian lay Catholic, died on March 14 last year at the age 88. She was then serving as president of the movement she founded with friends in Trent, Italy, during the Second World War.

Focolare means "hearth" or "family fireside" in Italian. Its spirituality focuses on unity and dialogue among all people and draws inspiration from Jesus' prayer in Saint John's Gospel "that they all may be one." Blessed Pope John XXIII approved the movement in 1962.

Lubich has written more than 50 books that have been published in 29 languages.

The pontifical University of Santo Tomas (UST) on March 14 hosted the launch of the book, "Essential Writings: Spirituality, Dialogue, Culture," which contains excerpts from Lubich's spiritual writings and speeches.

About 600 Focolare members and friends, including Buddhists and Muslims, gathered at the UST Medicine Auditorium for the event. Some participants also shared how Lubich and her movement impacted their lives, the Church and the world.

Father Rolando de la Rosa, UST rector, noted that Lubich was the first laywoman to receive an honorary doctorate in sacred theology from the university in 1997.

Another speaker, theologian Father Antonio Lambino, said Lubich's writings offer fresh insights into the spirituality of unity in the context of current realities confronting people of various faiths today.

Henrietta de Villa, former Philippine Ambassador to the Holy See, challenged Philippine women to "read the signs of the times and promote unity in the country and family." The head of the National Movement for Free Elections also said getting actively involved in next year's national election is one way women can emulate Lubich.

Economist Sonny Coloma discussed the Focolare's "Economy of Communion" (EoC), which emphasizes the spirit of giving and sharing in business and economics. He said EoC provides a spiritual framework for just compensation, co-responsibility, stewardship and practice of Christian values in business, enterprise and industry.

On the sidelines of the event, Focolare member Father Jeronimo Perez, spiritual director at St. Augustine Seminary in Tagaytay City, said the Philippine Church needs the spirituality of unity "very much." He added that it is precisely this unity which the Focolare is promoting among Church leaders and political groups, and within families.

Lay Focolare member Orlando Tiongco recalled the first Focolare gathering he attended with his wife in 1976 when he "realized the close relationship between his life and the Gospel."

He said he grew to respect Church authorities and became more active in Church affairs through the Focolare's "New Parish Movement" that promotes unity and living Gospel values within a parish.

Among guests at the book launch was Archbishop Edward Joseph Adams, apostolic nuncio to the Philippines. The day before, he led a Mass at the Manila cathedral to commemorate Lubich's death anniversary.www.catholic.org

This is probably the first documented sighting of an albino elephant in northern Botswana.

"We have been studying elephants in the region for nearly 10 years now, and this is the first documented evidence of an albino calf that I have come across."

He said that the condition might make it difficult for the calf to survive into adulthood.

"What happens to these young albino calves remains a mystery," said Dr Chase.

"Surviving this very rare phenomenon is very difficult in the harsh African bush. The glaring sun may cause blindness and skin problems."

However, he told BBC News that there might be a ray of hope for the pink calf as it already seemed to be learning to adapt to its condition.   I have learned that elephants are highly adaptable, intelligent and masters of survival

Dr Mike Chase, Elephants Without Borders

Dr Chase explained: "Because this elephant calf was sighted in the Okavango Delta, he may have a greater chance of survival. He can seek refuge under the large trees and cake himself in a thick mud, which will protect him from the Sun. BBC
