Bill Keller, Muslim-hating pastor, wants to build Christian center to rival 'Ground Zero mosque'
BY Ryan Strong
DAILY NEWS WRITER

Sunday, September 5th 2010, 2:35 PM

The fight over a proposed mosque near Ground Zero veered into fire-and-brimstone territory Sunday as a Florida preacher declared that Muslims will burn in hell.

"Muslims are going to hell, we need to save them," said pastor Bill Keller to a crowd of about 40 people at the New York Marriott Downtown, which overlooks Ground Zero.

Keller says he is raising funds to create a permanent 9/11 Christian Center to counter what he calls the "victory mosque," a few blocks from the site.

"Islam is not and has never been a religion of peace," he said. "How could you build bridges with people who ask their Muslim brothers to fly a plane into the Twin Towers and killed thousands of innocent people."

Sparing no other faith the rod, Keller blasted Mormons, Hindus, pro-choice supporters and gays."

"All we're trying to do is teach people the only truth there is," he said, "Forty years ago, no one would call me controversial," he said.

Many of those gathered to hear Keller speak came from out of town, but there were some New Yorkers in attendance.

"Without God I wouldn't have been able to get through 9/11," said Vincent Foras, a volunteer firefighter from Queens.

There were also a pair of protesters who slipped into the meeting who laughed loudly as Keller began his sermon.

Keller responded by saying, "Jesus loves you," and "We will pray for you," as the protestors were escorted out.

Others opposed to Park51 project have dismissed the Muslim-bashing preacher saying he allows mosque-supporters to too easily dismiss them as bigoted and racist.

The controversial project has become a national hot-button issue, and even in New York, 70 percent of residents have expressed opposition to its location, polls show.

General Topic / Caving, anyone?
September 05, 2010, 10:26:44 AM

Cavingâ€"also known as spelunking by some in the United States and occasionally potholing in the United Kingdomâ€"is the recreational pastime of exploring wild (generally non-commercial) cave systems. In contrast, speleology is the scientific study of caves and the cave environment.

The challenges of the activity depend on the cave being visited, but often include the negotiation of pitches, squeezes, and water (though actual cave diving is a separate sub-specialty undertaken only by very few cavers). Climbing or crawling is often necessary, and ropes are used extensively for safe negotiation of particularly steep or slippery passages.

Caving is often undertaken for the enjoyment of the outdoor activity or for physical exercise, as well as original exploration, similar to mountaineering or diving. Physical or biological science is also an important goal for some cavers. Virgin cave systems comprise some of the last unexplored regions on Earth and much effort is put into trying to locate and enter them. In well-explored regions (such as most first-world countries), the most accessible caves have already been explored, and gaining access to new caves often requires digging or diving.

Caves have been explored out of necessity (for shelter from the elements or from enemies), out of curiosity or for mystical reasons for thousands of years. However, only in the last century or two has the activity developed into a sophisticated, athletic pastime. In recent decades caving has changed considerably due to the availability of modern protective wear and equipment. It has recently come to be known as an "extreme sport" by some (though not commonly considered as such by its practitioners, who may dislike the term for its perceived connotation of disregard for safety).

Many of the skills of caving can also be used in the nature activities of mine exploration and urban exploration.

Carlotta Pierce, mom of dead, malnourished child force-fed child sleeping pills: prosecutor

BY Erica Pearson AND Larry Mcshane
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS
Saturday, September 4th 2010, 5:50 PM

A malevolent mom lashed her 18-pound daughter to a bed after the morbidly malnourished girl made a mess while grabbing a midnight snack, authorities said Saturday.

Carlotta Pierce, after tying down the frail 4-year-old, force-fed her sleeping pills to halt her "wild" behavior - raiding the family fridge, said Brooklyn prosecutor Tracey Downing.

"The mother tied up the child because she would get up in the night and eat food ... and make a mess," Downing said at a hearing.

A witness told police that Pierce had battered tiny Marchella Pierce with a belt and a plastic video case, drawing blood from the helpless girl, according to a criminal complaint.

The 30-year-old mother - ordered held yesterday on $300,000 bail - "did repeatedly strike Marchella Pierce about the body," the complaint charged.

The witness told cops that the doomed daughter suffered bruises from her head to her legs, most likely from blunt force trauma, the complaint said.

But it was the girl's "state of malnutrition" that put her at "a grave risk of death," the complaint charged.

Pierce, wearing a peach-colored hooded sweatshirt and jeans, smiled at her mom and brother when she was led into the courtroom.

She has insisted on her innocence, telling reporters on Friday, "I did not kill my baby!"

But officials provided chilling new details about the girl's final hours in a squalid Brooklyn apartment.

On Sept. 1, the day before the little girl's death, Pierce grew angry with Marchella and tied her down on the bed over the late-night snacks.

The witness told police that Pierce "repeatedly beat the child" - and a bloody video box was found in the garbage at the apartment.

The suspect is currently charged with assault, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child after an initial autopsy on her daughter was inconclusive.

Police sources said an upgrade in charges was possible as the investigation continues.

"She's not charged with homicide," said court-appointed defense lawyer George Sheinberg. "The autopsy did not indicate any kind of trauma ... at this point it is extremely inconclusive."

Monkeys Caught Monkeying Around During Full Moon

livescience.com â€" Fri Sep 3, 5:20 pm ET

Monkeys that prowl the forests of Argentina after dark prefer the light of the full moon, according to a new study. The findings suggest that for some nocturnal monkeys, moonlight trumps their internal biological clock for setting sleep schedules.

Owl monkeys in Central and South America are the only primates to stick to strict nocturnal patterns. But one type of owl monkey, the Azara's owl monkey, can switch from a nocturnal schedule to one that includes activity during the day and night.

To find out what triggers the Azara's owl monkey's strange schedule, researchers fitted wild monkeys with collars that would record when they were active. They then monitored the monkeys for up to 18 months.

They learned that the monkeys much preferred warmth and light over cold and darkness. Nocturnal activity was more common during the warm months of September to March than during colder months. On nights when the full moon rose, monkey activity peaked; the next morning, the worn-out monkeys often slept in. When the moon was new (and so not visible from Earth), however, monkeys hunkered down for the night and waited for morning before moving about. During three lunar eclipses (when the moon moves into the Earth's shadow) during the course of the study, the monkeys also stayed put.

The reason for the monkeys' increased activity seems to be the extra light put out by the full moon, rather than any sort of mystical lunar force. Studies have failed to find any widespread effects of the full moon on humans and animals, despite many full moon folk myths.
