The discovery of the balangay boats in Buturan, Agusan del Norte in the late 1970s served as further testimony to the ingenuity of the early Filipino.

What were the balangays? These were the first wooden watercraft excavated in Southeast Asia. When first announced to the media in 1977, the find was described by the National Museum of the Philippines using Antonio Pigafetta’s early 16th-century Italian spelling “balanghai” for “barangay”, a term which has been adopted by the Philippine government as a name for the smallest of political units. This was perhaps in deference to the unique brand of unity evident among the builders of these boats.

There are nine existing balangays, three of which have been systematically excavated by National Museum archaeologist, with others still waterlogged in specific sites in Butuan Ciy. Keeping the remaining boats in situ has proven to be the best way to preserve them, while they await eventual excavation.

The first boat, now preserved and displayed in a site museum in Libertad, Butuan City, had a carbon-14 date of 320, while the second boat, which has been transferred to the Maritime Hall of the National Museum in Manila, was dated to 1250. The third boat remains in a conservation vat the at the Butuan Regional Museum, undergoing preservative measures.

The balangay was basically a plank boat put together by joining the carved-out planks edge to edge, using pins or dowels. The planks, which were made from a hardwood called doongon in the Philippines (Heritiera littoralis), were fastened together every 12 centimeters long, which were driven into holes on the edge of each plank. On the inner side of the boat the planks were provided, at regular intervals, with raised rectangular lugs, carved from the same plank, through which holes were bored diagonally from the sides to the surface.

Rib-like structures made of lengths of wood were then lashed against these lughs to proved a flexible bulkhead, to reinforce and literally sew the boat together. Cordage knows as cabo negro (Arenga pinnata) was used for the purpose. The hull, measuring about 15 meters long and 4 meters wide, was ordinally semicircular in cross-section and with no marked keel. Provided with huge outriggers, the boat was propelled either by a sail or by paddling. The boats were finely manufactured without any blueprints, using a technique still employed by the boatmakers of Sibutu Island in the southern Philippines.

There is no basic difference in the technology of boatbuilding seen in the first two dated balangays, suggesting the stability of this construction technique over the last 900 years. The third boat, which was recovered in 1986, likewise exhibits the same mode of construction. This is a style of boatbuilding which was once popular from Scandinavia to the South Pacific, from the 3rd century B.C. to the present time in a few remote islands.

Filipina's death sentence upheld
KUWAIT CITY -- Kuwait's supreme court yesterday confirmed the death sentence handed down on a Filipina maid convicted of murdering her employer.

The decision by the Cassation Court to uphold the ruling against Marilou Ranario is final and cannot be appealed.

"Sad news," was how Vice President Noli de Castro prefaced his announcement of the court ruling at a press conference in Manila yesterday.

Her fate is now in the hands of the ruler of the oil-rich emirate, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, who will decide whether or not to sign the order for Ranario to be hanged.

Ranario was sentenced to death in September 2005 for killing her 46-year-old female employer over salary disputes and maltreatment.

De Castro said he would go to Kuwait next week to personally hand over to the emir President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's appeal seeking clemency or at least the commutation of Ranario's sentence.

"If we need to kneel before the emir, we will do so in exchange for Ranario's life," said De Castro, who described the emir as someone who is "close to Filipinos."

At the same time, he said four of the five relatives of the victim have given their forgiveness (tanazul) and accepted the "blood money" (dia). Under Islamic law, a killer can pay "blood money" to the victim's family to avoid execution.

Ranario, a teacher who left her two children (ages 11 and 13) in Surigao Del Norte in December 2003 to work as a domestic helper in Kuwait, alleged that her boss insulted her and people from the Philippines.

One in three in G7 ignorant about Aids

UNITED NATIONS - ONE in three adults in the world's top industrial democracies say they know little or nothing about Aids, a disease thought to have killed more than 28 million people in the past 26 years, a poll showed.

But the survey, carried out by Ipsos for the World Vision charity, found that in the seven countries studied, 44 per cent of respondents would be willing to pay more taxes to combat Aids, including 50 per cent in the United States.

More than 3,500 people in the United States, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Japan - the Group of Eight countries minus Russia - were interviewed for the survey, released on Thursday ahead of United Nations World Aids Day on Saturday.

Mr Richard Stearns, president of World Vision US, a Christian group that says it combats poverty and injustice worldwide, told a United Nations news conference that millions were ignorant of Aids because it was 'not real' for them.

'It's not personal, it is somebody else's problem and somebody else's disease, and very often in a place very, very far away and remote from their everyday lives,' he said.

Aids, which attacks the immune system and can be spread by sexual contact or blood transfusion, was first detected in the United States in 1981. World Vision says some 6,000 children a day currently lose a parent to Aids.

The Ipsos poll found that in the countries surveyed, Canadians were the most concerned about Aids and Japanese the least. Japan was also the country where the most people - 53 per cent - admitted to little or no knowledge of the disease.

Germans said they were the most knowledgeable, with 80 per cent claiming to know 'some' or 'a lot' about the issue. The comparable figure for the United States was 70 per cent.

In the countries taken together, one in four people thought the Aids problem had been 'greatly exaggerated' by the media, the survey said.

Nevertheless, Mr Stearns said he believed the citizens of the countries polled were 'ahead of their governments' in their view of how much should be done to fight Aids.

'I think that goes contrary to the view in Washington,' he said. 'I don't think Washington realises that that many Americans care about Aids at that level.

'So in a way it gives them the political cover to do more because ... when you have 50 per cent of the country saying 'you could raise my taxes if you could use that money to do more for HIV and Aids', that's a message that our politicians I think are not aware of,' he said.

The United Nations says some 33 million people worldwide are infected by HIV, the virus that causes Aids, including those who have developed the illness. -- REUTERS

by Julai

Ohh ilimnon nga gikan sa lubing bantugan,
ang imong kalami gihandum sa adlaw nga tanan.
Ilimnon nga gikan sa sugong,
ang imong kalami di gayod makabong.

Matam-is kaman o mabahal,

Makahubog ka man Julai.....hehehe...nice having you too...and welcome back sa TB.
