Inspiration & Hope / A Good Quote
May 08, 2009, 05:28:51 PM
Quote of the day:

"Whatever you give a woman, she will make greater. If you give her sperm, she'll give you a baby. If you give her a house, she'll give you a home. If you give her groceries, she'll give you a meal. If you give her a smile, she'll give you her heart. She multiplies and enlarges what is given to her.

So, if you give her any crap, be ready to receive a ton of s***."

Bible Study / La Madonna di Pompei The Supplica
May 08, 2009, 04:46:04 AM
May 8th is the Feast of Our Lady of Pompei. In Italy and in places all over the globe the feast will be marked by the solemn recitation at noon of Blessed Bartolo Longo's moving prayer, the Supplica, meaning supplication or petition.
Bound to Mary by the Rosary

The Supplica may not be everyone's cup of tea. Even pious folks may find it a bit too baroque, a bit overdone. It may be the southern Italian blood (mixed with Irish) that runs hot in my veins, but I love the Supplica and I plan on saying it with thousands of other people today. It is the prayer of a man very like myself: a poor sinner who fears nothing when he holds the Rosary in his hands, knowing that the Mother of God holds her end of the chain, and will not let it go.

The Supplica
Prayed at Midday on May 8th

O August Queen of Victories, O Sovereign of Heaven and Earth, at whose name the heavens rejoice and the abyss trembles, O glorious Queen of the Rosary, we your devoted children, assembled in your temple of Pompeii, (on this solemn day), pour out the affection of our heart and with filial confidence expresse our miseries to you.

From the throne of clemency, where you are seated as Queen, turn, O Mary, your merciful gaze on us, on our families, on Italy, on Europe, on the world. Have compassion on the sorrows and cares which embitter our lives. See, O Mother, how many dangers of body and soul, how many calamities and afflictions press upon us.

O Mother, implore for us the mercy of your divine Son and conquer with clemency the heart of sinners. They are our brothers and your children who cause the heart of our sweet Jesus to bleed and who sadden your most sensitive heart. Show all that you are the Queen of Peace and of Pardon.

Hail Mary.

It is true that although we are your children we are the first to crucify Jesus by our sins and to pierce anew your heart.

We confess that we are deserving of severe punishment, but remember that, on Golgotha, you received with the divine blood, the testament of the dying Savior, who declared you to be our Mother, the Mother of sinners.

You then, as our Mother, are our Advocate, our Hope. And we raise our suppliant hands to you with sighs crying "Mercy!" O good Mother, have pity on us, on our souls, on our families, our relatives, our friends, our deceased, especially our enemies, and on so many who call themselves Christian and yet offend the heart of your loving Son. Today we implore pity for the misguided nations throughout all Europe, throughout the world, so that they may return repentant to your heart.

Hail Mary.

Kindly deign to hear us. O Mary! Jesus has placed in your hands all the treasures of his graces and mercies. You are seated a crowned Queen at the right hand of your Son, resplendent with immortal glory above the choirs of angels. Your dominion extends throughout heaven and earth and all creatures are subject to you.

You are omnipotent by grace and therefore you can help us. Were you not willing to help us, since we are ungrateful children and undeserving of your protection, we would not know to whom to turn. Your motherly heart would not permit you see us, your children, lost. The Infant whom we see on your knees and the blessed rosary which we see in your hand, inspire confidence in us that we shall be heard. We confide fully in you, we abandon ourselves as helpless children into the arms of the most tender of mothers, and on this day, we expect from you the graces we so long for.

Hail Mary.

One last favour we now ask of you, O Queen, which you cannot refuse us (on this most solemn day): Grant to all of us your steadfast love and in a special manner your maternal blessing. We shall not leave you until you have blessed us. Bless, O Mary, at this moment, our Holy Father. To the ancient splendors of your crown, to the triumphs of your Rosary, whence you are called the Queen of Victories, add this one also, O Mother: grant the triumph of religion and peace to human society. Bless our bishops, priests and particularly all those who are zealous for the honor of your sanctuary. Bless finally all those who are associated with your temple of Pompeii and all those who cultivate and promote devotion to your Holy Rosary.

O blessed Rosary of Mary, sweet chain which unites us to God, bond of love which unites us to the angels, tower of salvation against the assaults of hell, safe port in our universal shipwreck, we shall never abandon you. You will be our comfort in the hour of agony: to you the last kiss of our dying life. And the last word from our lips will be your sweet name, O Queen of the Rosary of Pompeii, O dearest Mother, O Refuge of Sinners, O Sovereign Consoler of the Afflicted. Be blessed everywhere, today and always, on earth and in Heaven. Amen.

Hail, Holy Queen.

I´m very happy to read your postings that there are really concerned Forum members about contraceptives. Taking the initiative to take the burden from the women´s side is a positive step. The first time my daughter used a contraceptive pill was a disaster. She suffered lung embolie which almost put her in real trouble. The list of side effects is too long to mention here.
So far, vasectomy is the safest and easy. My male acquaintances never mentioned any effects on their sexual feats.  I´m proud of you guys.

Please don´t get discourage, there are more things what a baby needs, baby milk is just a miniscule. I felt relieved because at that time, foods were so contmainated with doixin and this could be toxic which is dangerous for babies breastfed by their mothers.

Chicken Wings - Its Dangerous

Avoid eating chicken wings frequently - ladies, especially; a true story...!
A friend of mine recently had a growth in her womb and she underwent an operation to remove the.
The cyst removed was filled with a dark colored blood. She thought that she would be recovered after the surgery but! she was terribly wrong.

A relapse occurred just a few months later. Distressed , she rushed down to her gynecologist for a consultation.
During her consultation, her doctor asked her a question that puzzled her..
He ask if she was a frequent consumer of chicken wings and she replied yes wondering as to how, he knew of her eating habits.
You see, the truth is in this modern day and age; chickens are injected with steroids to accelerate their growth so that the needs of this society can be met.  This need is none other than the need for food.

Chickens that are injected with steroids are usually given the shot at the  neck or the wings. Therefore, it is in these places that the highest concentration of steroids exists.
These steroids have terrifying effects on the body as it accelerates growth..
It has an even more dangerous effect in the presence of female hormones, this leads to women being more prone to the growth of a cyst in the womb. Therefore, I advise the people out there to watch their diets and to lower their frequency of consuming chicken wings!

Taking a baby with you in your bed is one of the suggestions to prevent sudden death syndrome. Babies feeling the warmth of their parents are emotionally stable and less prone to ADS, hyperactive child.  Parent´s odor makes bonding stronger.

Sts. Marian and James

(d. 259)

Often, it’s hard to find much detail from the lives of saints of the early Church. What we know about the third-century martyrs we honor today is likewise minimal. But we do know that they lived and died for the faith. Almost 2,000 years later, that is enough reason to honor them.
Born in North Africa, Marian was a lector or reader; James was a deacon. For their devotion to the faith they suffered during the persecution of Valerian.

Prior to their persecution Marian and James were visited by two bishops who encouraged them in the faith not long before they themselves were martyred. A short time later, Marian and James were arrested and interrogated. The two readily confessed their faith and, for that, were tortured. While in prison they are said to have experienced visions, including one of the two bishops who had visited them earlier.

On the last day of their lives, Marian and James joined other Christians facing martyrdom. They were blindfolded and then put to death. Their bodies were thrown into the water. The year was 259.

The prostate is a chestnut-sized gland below
the bladder that produce fertility-promoting
substances. It is susceptible to enlargement
and cancer- especially in the middle age.
Prostate cancer kills more men than any other
form of cancer except cancer of the lungs.
Many men have prostate cancers without
being aware of it. The risk of prostate cancer
increases with age
Scientists aren't exactly sure what causes
prostate cancer. Recent studies in Japan,
suggests, however, that sexual activity plays
a role. At higher risk: Men who become sexually
active when very young, have many sexual
partners, marry late, or stop their sexual activity
early. Levels of the male hormone testosterone,
which stimulates the prostate and affects sexual
drive, could be a factor. Testosterone seems to
stimulate tumor growth
Prostate cancer doesn't always cause obvious
symptoms. In about 25% of men with advanced
cases, however, there is pain in the pelvis, spine,
the ribs, and the long bones.
Most cases of prostate cancer are detected
during routine rectal exam and  blood test of PSA.
A digital exam can locate tumors half a centimeter
in diameter or larger while in comparison, a new
technology, transrectal ultrasonography, uses high
frequency sound waves to detect tumors that are
too small to be detected
with a digital exam.
The second leading prostate problem is enlarge-
ment, also known as benign prostate hypertrophy
(BPH). This occurs when the glands swells and
begin to press upon the urethra. Half the men past
the age of 40 have at least microscopic evidence
of BPH.
At one time, treating prostate cancer by radical
surgery was likely to cause impotence. But today,
many treatments are effective without serious
side effects. Options: surgery, external radiation,
and hormone therapy. Treatments is tailored to
each individual, based on age, health and tumor
size.
Men under 50 years of age experience impotence
because of external factors- drinking, smoking,
certain medications (tranquilizers, heart drugs,
anti-hypertensive, anti-anxiety drugs). Half of all
cases  of impotence among men  over 50 years
old have a physical component- most commonly
poor circulation in the penis. In such cases dietary
precautions might prevent heart attack as well as
improve sex.To help prevent circulatory problems,
men should reduce fried foods, fats, and other
high cholesterol dishes.

Two Filipinos made in history in the world’s foremost military academy. Christy Isis Achanzar became the first Filipina to receive a Bachelor of Science degree from America’s premier military academy, and Mario Feliciano was the highest ranked international cadet ever to graduate from West Point, and finished with honors in engineering management and placed 87th out of a graduating class of 995.

Achanzar bagged a number of awards including the Superintendent’s Achievement Award and the National Society Dames of the Court of Honor Award for excellence in electrical engineering sequence.

They were among 15 foreign cadets of class 2008 whose motto is “No Mission Too Great.”

After their graduation, Philippine embassy defense attaché, Army Col. Rolando Tenefrancia presented Achanzar and Feliciano their commissions as second lieutenants in the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

He described the pair as “the best of the best and a credit to the country and the AFP.”

The graduation ceremony was held at the USMA football field on the banks of the Hudson River under a cloudy sky that gave way to rain before the traditional hat toss.

In addition to Achanzar and Feliciano about 10 Filipino Americans also graduated from West Point including Anthony Bulaclac Jr. of Victorville, California, Daniel Asis of Jersey City, New Jersey and Diana Alquero and Christine Limsiaco, both of Houston, Texas.

Bulaclac was born in Mindanao and moved to California when he was seven years old with his parents, Anthony and Pomben Bulaclac.

Feliciano said his dream is to become AFP chief of staff and president of the Philippines. In contrast Achanzar, who hails from Davao City and is deeply religious, wants to take life one day at a time. GoodnewsPilipinas.com

A male contraceptive jab could be as effective at preventing pregnancies as the female pill or condoms, work shows.

The monthly testosterone injection works by temporarily blocking sperm production and could revolutionise birth control, experts believe.

But if this does become available men should still remember that it will not protect them against sexually transmitted infections and they should still use a condom." BBC

St. Hilary of Arles

(400-449)

It’s been said that youth is wasted on the young. In some ways, that was true for today’s saint.
Born in France in the early fifth century, Hilary came from an aristocratic family. In the course of his education he encountered his relative, Honoratus, who encouraged the young man to join him in the monastic life. Hilary did so. He continued to follow in the footsteps of Honoratus as bishop. Hilary was only 29 when he was chosen bishop of Arles.

The new, youthful bishop undertook the role with confidence. He did manual labor to earn money for the poor. He sold sacred vessels to ransom captives. He became a magnificent orator. He traveled everywhere on foot, always wearing simple clothing.

That was the bright side. Hilary encountered difficulty in his relationships with other bishops over whom he had some jurisdiction. He unilaterally deposed one bishop. He selected another bishop to replace one who was very ill-but, to complicate matters, did not die! Pope St. Leo the Great kept Hilary a bishop but stripped him of some of his powers.

Hilary died at 49. He was a man of talent and piety who, in due time, had learned how to be a bishop.

By far the healthiest and most effective way to control your weight is through long-term healthy eating and regular exercise (you will need to do at least 150 minutes a week of seriously-out-of-puff exercise, ideally broken down into daily chunks) supported by counselling and behaviour modification, which you should find at a slimming club.

Dr. Franz Seidenschwarz, the newly appointed honorary consul there, said more German visitors and investors are coming into Cebu.

Many German companies are selecting Cebu as their place of operation. In fact, the greatest German employer in the Philippines, Dedon, is located here in Metro Cebu providing jobs for the Cebuanos,” he added in his e-mail to INQUIRER.net.

Seidenschwarz said a German honorary consulate was also established in Cebu in 1871.

“I am very proud that we have the president and CEO of this very same company with us, Mr. Klaus Schröder…Nowadays, we experience a second and much bigger wave of rapid economic development. The modern and high tech economic development is carried by call centers and export businesses, etc.,” Seidenschwarz said.

“It is in these times that a German representation becomes a vital component,” he added.

Others who attended the opening of the consulate on April 29 were: German Ambassador to the Philippines Christian-Ludwig Weber-Lortsch; Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia; Cebu City Vice-Mayor Michael Rama; Roberto E. The penis is composed of very rugged tissue. However, when spurred on by drugs such as Viagra or Levitra, the penis may not have a chance to rest and can become dangerously engorged, lose oxygen, and although a small chance, suffer damages. If an erection lasts over four hours, see your doctor.

The reason that men lose their erection between orgasms is because the penis has to replenish its oxygen supply. Think of a deep-sea diver changing tanks. If the tissue does not rest up and receive new oxygen, the erection can swell up to a painful degree, which may lead to an embarrassing hospital visit.

If you are having so much sex you are experiencing pain or numbness, definitely take a break. If your emotional desire is flagging and you are just going through the motions because you feel like you have to compete, take a few nights off and you might find yourself looking forward to it again. The pressure to transform a loving experience into a marathon event can lead to erectile dysfunction where none had existed, or even damage a relationship.

With this in mind, and breaks planned, really the only problems standing in the way of day-in day-out sexual abandon are practical matters. Is your spouse interested in the same amount of sex as you? Is sex interfering with getting to work on time? Are you preoccupied with sex or has it become an obsession often with little satisfaction? If the latter is true it could be due to sexual addiction, which should be treated.

For women, comments next time. ;D

Blessed Michael Giedroyc

(d. 1485)

A life of physical pain and mental torment didn’t prevent Michael Giedroyc from achieving holiness.
Born near Vilnius, Lithuania, Michael suffered from physical and permanent handicaps from birth. He was a dwarf who had the use of only one foot. Because of his delicate physical condition, his formal education was frequently interrupted. But over time, Michael showed special skills at metalwork. Working with bronze and silver, he created sacred vessels, including chalices.

He traveled to Cracow Poland, where he joined the Augustinians. He received permission to live the life of a hermit in a cell adjoining the monastery. There Michael spent his days in prayer, fasted and abstained from all meat and lived to an old age. Though he knew the meaning of suffering throughout his years, his rich spiritual life brought him consolation. Michael’s long life ended in 1485 in Cracow.

Five hundred years later, Pope John Paul II visited the city and spoke to the faculty of the Pontifical Academy of Theology. The 15th century in Cracow, the pope said, was “the century of saints.” Among those he cited was Blessed Michael Giedroyc.

Sts. Philip and James

James, Son of Alphaeus: We know nothing of this man but his name, and of course the fact that Jesus chose him to be one of the 12 pillars of the New Israel, his Church. He is not the James of Acts, son of Clopas, “brother” of Jesus and later bishop of Jerusalem and the traditional author of the Letter of James. James, son of Alphaeus, is also known as James the Lesser to avoid confusing him with James the son of Zebedee, also an apostle and known as James the Greater.
Philip: Philip came from the same town as Peter and Andrew, Bethsaida in Galilee. Jesus called him directly, whereupon he sought out Nathanael and told him of the “one about whom Moses wrote” (John 1:45).

Like the other apostles, Philip took a long time coming to realize who Jesus was. On one occasion, when Jesus saw the great multitude following him and wanted to give them food, he asked Philip where they should buy bread for the people to eat. St. John comments, “[Jesus] said this to test him, because he himself knew what he was going to do” (John 6:6). Philip answered, “Two hundred days’ wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little [bit]” (John 6:7).

John’s story is not a put-down of Philip. It was simply necessary for these men who were to be the foundation stones of the Church to see the clear distinction between humanity’s total helplessness apart from God and the human ability to be a bearer of divine power by God’s gift.

On another occasion, we can almost hear the exasperation in Jesus’ voice. After Thomas had complained that they did not know where Jesus was going, Jesus said, “I am the way...If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him” (John 14:6a, 7). Then Philip said, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us” (John 14:8). Enough! Jesus answered, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9a).

Possibly because Philip bore a Greek name or because he was thought to be close to Jesus, some Gentile proselytes came to him and asked him to introduce them to Jesus. Philip went to Andrew, and Andrew went to Jesus. Jesus’ reply in John’s Gospel is indirect; Jesus says that now his “hour” has come, that in a short time he will give his life for Jew and Gentile alike.

Health and Food / Cilantro Oil
May 01, 2009, 02:52:04 PM
Hallo Grace you make me curious with Cilantro oil I found a recipe while surfing;
Ingredients
1 bunch cilantro
1 cup oil (canola, veg.,etc.)
Directions
1Blanch (put in boiling water) cilantro 20 seconds.
2Rinse under cold water.
3Drain and dry well.
4In the jar of a blender combine cilantro and oil.
5Blend at medium speed 5 minutes.
6Store in a glass jar and refrigerate overnight.
7When herb has settled, pour oil through a paper coffee filter into a glass bottle.
8Store tightly covered in refrigerator.
9Oil will keep up to two weeks, after which it will lose some of its color and flavor.
10Note: Recipe works equally well with basil, parsley or mint; the best combination of these herbs is mint and basil.
11Enjoy!

Cilantro Characteristics
Pronounced: sih-LAHN-troh
Cilantro is a member of the carrot family. It is sometimes called Coriander or Chinese Parsley. Cilantro is the leaves and stems of the coriander plant. Ground coriander seeds are the spice commonly called coriander.

In many cultures, cilantro/coriander is regarded as an aphrodisiac and, if consumed in large quantities, it acts as a narcotic. Its crushed seeds, which now primarily come from Morocco and Romania, are today used to flavor gin, liqueurs, hotdogs, chewing gum, and cigarettes. Traditionally, they are reputed to combat flatulence. And Arab women still chew them to ease labor pains. Today, in leaf and seed form, it's used most commonly in the cuisines of Mexican, North African, and Oriental countries.

Fresh cilantro does not keep well, and the flavor of dried is not comparable. To store, pick out any wilted leaves, and put it in a jar with water like a bunch of flowers. Cover the leaves with a plastic bag and put the whole thing in the refrigerator. Change the water every two days or so, picking out any wilted leaves when you do.

She has just become the youngest member of Mensa, with an estimated IQ of 156.

That puts her two points higher on the scoreboard than Carol Vorderman, and comfortably in the top 0.2 per cent of children her age.
Here's the best bit, though. She seems to be a sweet little girl with charming parents who simply want her to be happy.
Elise was little more than five months when she looked her father Edward in the eyes and called him Dada.

She was walking three months later and running two months after that.

Before her first birthday she could recognise her written name and by 16 months she could count to ten. Yesterday she did it again  -  in Spanish.
'What's the capital of Russia?' asks her mother Louise, 28. 'Moscow!' comes the instant reply.
Indonesia? 'Jakarta!' It is tempting for outsiders to speculate whether this is a well-rehearsed performance instilled by pushy parents to show off their daughter's extraordinary talent.

But it seems to have taken Louise and Edward, from North London, as much by surprise as anyone else. Until she started to communicate, all they noticed was a tendency for her to stare at things and at people, as if soaking up information.

St. Pius V

(1504-1572)

This is the pope whose job was to implement the historic Council of Trent. If we think recent popes have had difficulties in implementing Vatican Council II, Pius V had even greater problems after that historic council more than four centuries ago.
During his papacy (1566-1572), Pius V was faced with the almost overwhelming responsibility of getting a shattered and scattered Church back on its feet. The family of God had been shaken by corruption, by the Reformation, by the constant threat of Turkish invasion and by the bloody bickering of the young nation-states. In 1545 a previous pope convened the Council of Trent in an attempt to deal with all these pressing problems. Off and on over 18 years, the Church Fathers discussed, condemned, affirmed and decided upon a course of action. The Council closed in 1563.

Pius V was elected in 1566 and was charged with the task of implementing the sweeping reforms called for by the Council. He ordered the founding of seminaries for the proper training of priests. He published a new missal, a new breviary, a new catechism and established the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) classes for the young. Pius zealously enforced legislation against abuses in the Church. He patiently served the sick and the poor by building hospitals, providing food for the hungry and giving money customarily used for the papal banquets to poor Roman converts. His decision to keep wearing his Dominican habit led to the custom of the pope wearing a white cassock.

In striving to reform both Church and state, Pius encountered vehement opposition from England's Queen Elizabeth and the Roman Emperor Maximilian II. Problems in France and in the Netherlands also hindered Pius's hopes for a Europe united against the Turks. Only at the last minute was he able to organize a fleet which won a decisive victory in the Gulf of Lepanto, off Greece, on October 7, 1571.

Pius's ceaseless papal quest for a renewal of the Church was grounded in his personal life as a Dominican friar. He spent long hours with his God in prayer, fasted rigorously, deprived himself of many customary papal luxuries and faithfully observed the Dominican Rule and its spirit.

Comment:

In their personal lives and in their actions as popes, Pius V and Paul VI (d. 1978) both led the family of God in the process of interiorizing and implementing the new birth called for by the Spirit in major Councils. With zeal and patience, Pius and Paul pursued the changes urged by the Council Fathers. Like Pius and Paul, we too are called to constant change of heart and life.

Quote:
"In this universal assembly, in this privileged point of time and space, there converge together the past, the present, and the future. The past: for here, gathered in this spot, we have the Church of Christ with her tradition, her history, her Councils, her doctors, her saints; the present: we are taking leave of one another to go out toward the world of today with its miseries, its sufferings, its sins, but also with its prodigious accomplishments, values, and virtues; and the future is here in the urgent appeal of the peoples of the world for more justice, in their will for peace, in their conscious or unconscious thirst for a higher life, that life precisely which the Church of Christ can give and wishes to give to them" (from Pope Paul's closing message at Vatican II).

Senility or dementia can be caused by several
diseases affecting brain function. It can also
result from nutritional deficiency (especially de-
feciencies of vitamin B-1 ( thiamine) B-2-
( niacin), B-6 (pyridoxine), and B-12), alcoholism,
Alzheimer's disease, kidney or liver failure, hypo-
thyroidism, multiple sclerosis, multiple strokes,
atherosclerosis, AIDS, or diabetes, to name
a few.
Many people diagnosed as senile actually
suffer from pseudodementia- symptoms that
mimic dementia but that are actually caused
by deafness, brain tumors, thyroid problems,
liver or kidney problems, rthe use of certain
drugs, or other disorders.
Feelings of isolation, loneliness, frustrations,
anger, fatigue, and loss of social life often accom-
pany this condition- and this can be overwhelming.
Evidence suggests that many cases of dementia
maybe prevented by "stroke reduction" measure-
not smoking, controlling high blood pressure,
adhering to proper diet, and taking appropriate
nutritional supplements.
When choosing supplements, avoid heavily coated
or sustained release products. These are difficult
to break down. Instead, choose liquids, powders or
sublingual forms.
Herbs that are helps: Anise-appear to sharpen brain
power; gingko biloba-improves cerebral circulation,
enhances brain function and memory, and destroys
free radicals to protect brain cells; gotu kola and
ginseng also aid with memory function.
The Chinese herb "quian ceng ta" ( Huperzia serrata),
increases memory retention. It is the source of the
compound "huperzine A" . Pure standardized extracts
of this compound have been shown to increase clear-
headedness, language ability, and memory in a sig-
nificant percentage of people with Alzheimer's disease.
It is a potent blocker of acetylcholinesterase, an en-
zyme that regulates the activity of acetylcholine, which
is an important brain chemical involved in maintaining
healthy learning and memory functions.
Vitamins: Vitamin B-6 vital for mental health and for
maintaining electrolyte balance in the body. Vitamin
B complex injection- All B vitamins are necessary for
brain and nerve health. Older adults often have defe-
ciencies because the ability to absorb the B-vitamins
declines with age. Injections under Dr's supervision
are best. Vitamin B-3 (niacin) -improves cerebral
circulation and lowers cholesterol levels but caution-
do  not take niacin if you have a liver disorder, gout,
or high blood pressure.
Vitamin C with bioflovonoids reduces blood clotting
tendency,improving cerebral circulation. Vitamin E-
improves cerebral circulation and boosts immunity,
which decline with age.
Essential fatty acids such as flaxseed oil, primrose
oil - they promote brain function and nerve function
as well as a healthy immune system
Eat whole grain cereals and bread, raw nuts and
low-fat yogurt and soured products. Eat swiss
cheese, brown rice and plenty of fiber daily.
Drink plenty of liquids, even if you are not thirsty- as
we grow older, our "thirst system" does not work well.
Move the bowels daily- oat bran, rice bran, and a high
fiber diet are important.
Keep active. Exercising, walking, engaging in mental
activity and doing things you enjoy, like pursuing a
hobby are important. Seek out companionship and
new experiences. Some people withdraw and keep
to themselves as they get older because it seems
easier, safer, but this can lead to loneliness and
depression. In this darn age invest in buying and
learning how to use computer and voila you have
lots of friends to chat with. CHEERS.

General Topic / Re: Sleeping disorder, Insomnia
April 30, 2009, 05:20:40 AM
I have been through with insomnia but the long way to better my sleep problems costed me a lot of nerves. I tried wine but the sleep induced thru alcohol  is short. Pills is habit forming.
Mayo clinic suggests the following;

Go to bed and get up at about the same time every day
, even on the weekends. Sticking to a schedule helps reinforce your body's sleep-wake cycle and can help you fall asleep better at night.

Don't eat or drink large amounts before bedtime. Eat a light dinner about two hours before sleeping. If you're prone to heartburn, avoid spicy or fatty foods, which can make your heartburn flare and prevent a restful sleep. Also, limit how much you drink before bed. Too much liquid can cause you to wake up repeatedly during the night for trips to the bathroom.

Avoid nicotine, caffeine and alcohol in the evening. These are stimulants that can keep you awake. Smokers often experience withdrawal symptoms at night, and smoking in bed is dangerous. Avoid caffeine for eight hours before your planned bedtime. Your body doesn't store caffeine, but it takes many hours to eliminate the stimulant and its effects.  And although often believed to be a sedative, alcohol actually disrupts sleep.

Exercise regularly. Regular physical activity, especially aerobic exercise, can help you fall asleep faster and make your sleep more restful. Don't exercise within three hours of your bedtime, however. Exercising right before bed may make getting to sleep more difficult.

Make your bedroom cool, dark, quiet and comfortable. Create a room that's ideal for sleeping. Adjust the lighting, temperature, humidity and noise level to your preferences. Use blackout curtains, eye covers, earplugs, extra blankets, a fan, a humidifier or other devices to create an environment that suits your needs.

Sleep primarily at night. Daytime naps may steal hours from nighttime slumber. Limit daytime sleep to about a half-hour and make it during midafternoon. If you work nights, keep your window coverings closed so that sunlight, which adjusts the body's internal clock, doesn't interrupt your sleep. If you have a day job and sleep at night, but still have trouble waking up, leave the window coverings open and let the sunlight help wake you up.

Choose a comfortable mattress and pillow. Features of a good bed are subjective and differ for each person. But make sure you have a bed that's comfortable. If you share your bed, make sure there's enough room for two. Children and pets are often disruptive, so you may need to set limits on how often they sleep in bed with you.

Start a relaxing bedtime routine. Do the same things each night to tell your body it's time to wind down. This may include taking a warm bath or shower, reading a book, or listening to soothing music. Relaxing activities done with lowered lights can help ease the transition between wakefulness and sleepiness.

Go to bed when you're tired and turn out the lights. If you don't fall asleep within 15 to 20 minutes, get up and do something else. Go back to bed when you're tired. Don't agonize over falling asleep. The stress will only prevent sleep.

Use sleeping pills only as a last resort. Check with your doctor before taking any sleep medications. He or she can make sure the pills won't interact with your other medications or with an existing medical condition. Your doctor can also help you determine the best dosage. If you do take a sleep medication, reduce the dosage gradually when you want to quit, and never mix alcohol and sleeping pills. If you feel sleepy or dizzy during the day, talk to your doctor about changing the dosage or discontinuing the pills.

If you're having problems sleeping more than three times a week for a month's time, see your doctor. You could have a sleep disorder, such as obstructive sleep apnea or restless legs syndrome. Identifying and treating the cause of your sleep disturbance can help get you back on the road to a good night's sleep.

Mga higala, si Janjan ug ako insomniacs, we agreed to open a thread to hear your views about this sleeping disorder. ;)

Insomnia includes having trouble falling or staying asleep. It's one of the most common medical complaints. With insomnia, you usually awaken feeling unrefreshed, which takes a toll on your ability to function during the day. Insomnia can sap not only your energy level and mood, but also your health, work performance and quality of life.

St. Catherine of Siena

(1347-1380)

The value Catherine makes central in her short life and which sounds clearly and consistently through her experience is complete surrender to Christ. What is most impressive about her is that she learns to view her surrender to her Lord as a goal to be reached through time.
She was the 23rd child of Jacopo and Lapa Benincasa and grew up as an intelligent, cheerful and intensely religious person. Catherine disappointed her mother by cutting off her hair as a protest against being overly encouraged to improve her appearance in order to attract a husband. Her father ordered her to be left in peace and she was given a room of her own for prayer and meditation.

She entered the Dominican Third Order at 18 and spent the next three years in seclusion, prayer and austerity. Gradually a group of followers gathered around herâ€"men and women, priests and religious. An active public apostolate grew out of her contemplative life. Her letters, mostly for spiritual instruction and encouragement of her followers, began to take more and more note of public affairs. Opposition and slander resulted from her mixing fearlessly with the world and speaking with the candor and authority of one completely committed to Christ. She was cleared of all charges at the Dominican General Chapter of 1374.

Her public influence reached great heights because of her evident holiness, her membership in the Dominican Third Order, and the deep impression she made on the pope. She worked tirelessly for the crusade against the Turks and for peace between Florence and the pope

In 1378, the Great Schism began, splitting the allegiance of Christendom between two, then three, popes and putting even saints on opposing sides. Catherine spent the last two years of her life in Rome, in prayer and pleading on behalf of the cause of Urban VI and the unity of the Church. She offered herself as a victim for the Church in its agony. She died surrounded by her "children."

Catherine ranks high among the mystics and spiritual writers of the Church. In 1970 Paul VI named her and Teresa of Avila as doctors of the Church. In recent years, it has been suggested that she (among other possibilities) should be named patron of the Internet. Her spiritual testament is found in The Dialogue.
