update:

Muslims "Overtake" Catholics, Become Largest Religion

Allessandra Rizzo in Vatican City
Associated Press
March 31, 2008

Islam has surpassed Roman Catholicism as the world's largest religion, the Vatican newspaper said Sunday.

"For the first time in history, we are no longer at the top: Muslims have overtaken us," Monsignor Vittorio Formenti said in an interview with the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano. Formenti compiles the Vatican's yearbook.

Catholics are holding steady at about 17.4 percent of the world population, he said.

Muslims are now at 19.2 percent, according to data from 2006, he added.

(Related: "Islam Expanding Globally, Adapting Locally" [October 24, 2003].)

Bigger Families

"It is true that while Muslim families, as is well known, continue to make a lot of children, Christian ones on the contrary tend to have fewer and fewer," the monsignor said.

Muslim countries compiled the figures on Muslims and then provided them to the United Nations, he said, adding that the Vatican could vouch only for its own data.

Christians overallâ€"including Catholic Christiansâ€"make up 33 percent of the world population, Formenti said.

Spokespeople for the Vatican and the United Nations did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment Sunday.

updatE:

PhilRice: Alternative rice varieties now available

There may no longer be a need to import rice if only Filipinos will look into the use of alternative rice varieties achieved through biotechnology that are available in the market, an expert from the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) said.

Alternative rice varieties NSIC Rc142 (Tubigan 7) and NSIC Rc154 (Tubigan 11) have been available in the market as early as 1995.

The cost, said Dr. Dindo Tabanao, is just the same as any ordinary rice.

Tubigan 7 and Tubigan 11 were products of a mid-level biotechnology technique called marker-aided selection (MAS).

These alternative rice varieties are bacterial leaf blight resistant (BLB) -- a disease that is endemic in provinces with irrigated lowlands such as Ilocos Norte, Cagayan, Ifugao, Isabela, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac and Bulacan.

Tubigan 7 and Tubigan 11 are just two of the rice varieties produced by biotechnology that has helped increased farmer's production- thus answering the country's problem of low productivity in recent years.

Tubigan 7 can yield at least 24 percent more than the common rice variety during the dry season and up to 32 percent more during the wet season.

Through the use of DNA markers, plant breeders are able to easily identify the offspring that are BLB resistant.

Safe for humans

Scientists have already assured that these alternative rice varieties are safe for human consumption. Studies have shown that Tubigan rice varieties have good qualities, as it is moist and sticky when cooked.

Government officials admit while largely an agricultural country, the Philippines is unable to meet its own rice needs in light of the demands of the growing population simply because it does not have sufficient land to till.

Agricultural lands devoted to rice production in Thailand and Vietnam, the country's major source of rice imports are double than that of the land devoted to rice production here. In 2004 for example, the Philippines only harvested from 4.12 million hectares of land, whereas in Vietnam, 9.82 million hectares of land grew rice.

The only way for the country to meet the demand, said PhilRice director Leocadio Sebastian, is to increase productivity.

Biotechnology has been addressing this problem with the introduction of alternative rice varieties resistant to rice diseases that have commonly caused the low farmers productivity.

Tungro-disease (RTD) and bacterial leaf blight resistant (BLB) rice varieties are being developed to lessen yield losses in the coming years. At present, two BLB rice varieties, Tubigan 7 and Tubigan 11 are already commercially available.

While initial studies done by PhilRice have shown that it will be more costly for farmers to produce healthier crops through biotechnology, the benefits outweigh the costs consequently as the farmer's gross income is increased by at least 26 percent.  Biolife News Service

Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"Between finishing her schoolwork for the UP Open University and laying down tracks for two forthcoming CDs under Sony-BMG, singer-actress Sharon Cuneta found the time to field questions about the show biz comeback of former husband Gabby Concepcion.

Inquirer Entertainment caught up with Sharon, who granted a phone interview as she was motoring to a Makati recording studio on Tuesday night, three days before her flight to London, where she is currently shooting the Star Cinema drama “Caregiver.”

On the phone, Sharon sounded harassed, as she was obviously being hit from all sidesâ€"juggling school, work, family.

To top it off, the Gabby issue had to explode in that very same week.

She candidly admitted that she is torn about the Gabby comeback.

“The industry lacks good leading men like him,” she explained.

At the same time, she is not so keen about a proposed Sharon-Gabby reunion movie, with their daughter KC (whom she fondly calls their “eternal connection”) thrown in for good measure.

“People say there’s clamor [for such a movie],” she noted. “I have no problem with that. But the point is: Does he want to do it?”

Another crucial consideration: “Does KC want to do it?”

Easy target

“I believe KC wants to establish herself first as an actress, away from the shadow of her parents,” Sharon clarified. “It’s best for KC’s first movie to be a solo [starrer].”

She agreed with Gabby that such a project would be an easy target for intrigue-mongers.

Sharon pointed out: “No amount of money would be worth the peace of mind of my husband (Sen. Francis Pangilinan) and my two young daughters (Frankie and Miel).”

Sharon’s priority is to shield her daughters from controversy. “We have no time for negativity,” she insisted.

In any case, she reiterated that she and Gabby are “civil” to each other.

The last time they talked was on the cell phone, when KC visited Gabby in San Francisco two years ago.

Phone exchange

“I was talking to KC, who was on the way to the airport, bound for home,” Sharon recalled. “She suddenly gave the phone to Gabby.”

It was a pleasant conversation, she recounted. “He told me he was happy that KC grew up into a wonderful young woman. I told him that she loved and respected him deeply, even if they didn’t see each other for so long.”

To break the earnestness, Sharon cracked, “I guess that says something about the kind of person I am. Then, he said thank you.”

When she put down the phone, Sharon said, “I started crying. After all these years, I finally got a thank you.”

Should she bump into him in the hallways of ABS-CBN, Sharon insisted, “I would say hi to him. I don’t expect to be immediately chummy with him, but I’ll be cordial.”

As she jokingly inquired earlier (when told about Gabby’s contract with ABS-CBN): “We’re Kapamilya again?”

another update:

he Department of Foreign Affairs will still not confirm whether it was a Filipina entertainer who was murdered and chopped into pieces in Tokyo’s Roppongi district saying she has only been reported missing.

DFA Undersecretary for Migrant Worker’s Affairs Esteban Conejos said in a press conference that they could only say that the victim was chopped up.

He said the victim has not been identified and Tokyo police are conducting DNA tests to determine if the victim was indeed the missing Filipina.

However, Japanese newspapers and even the Agence France-Presse said that the victim was none other than Honiefaith Ratilla Kamiosawa, who worked in Tokyo's Roppongi entertainment district

Mainichi Shimbun reported that the Japanese man arrested for the murder, 48-year old Hiroshi Nozaki, was her roommate during the time of her killing. They shared an apartment in Kawaguchi in the Saitama Prefecture.

Chopped and washed

AFP said Nozaki allegedly chopped up Ratilla’s body and cleaned the pieces in a washing machine.

Media accounts revealed that Nozaki had served prison time for a similar case of mutilating the body of a Filipina bar hostess in 2000 but was set free.

Police on Sunday arrested Nozaki on charges of destroying the body of Ratilla.

The private Asahi network said Nozaki cut her body into pieces in his bathroom and "washed them elaborately in a laundry machine" to make them lighter or to make it difficult to trace the cause of death.

Little blood remained in the recovered body parts, although blood was found in the washing machine, the Asahi and other networks said.

Caught with evidence

Police declined comment on the reports. They earlier said that the victim's co-worker, who shared an apartment with her and Nozaki, saw him carrying a body part.

Nozaki was taken into custody after trying to commit suicide on a street in a Tokyo suburb by slitting his wrist.

Investigators found a scribbled note and a key he was carrying to a baggage locker where they found a body part.

The victim was reportedly cut into more than 10 pieces that were put into plastic bags inside a suitcase in a locker, but her head had not yet been found.

In the earlier crime in 2000, Nozaki burned the body parts and flushed them down a toilet, the Sports Nippon tabloid said.

The victim's cause of death was never established and he was convicted only of charges of destroying a body. He served three-and-a-half years in prison before being released, the newspaper said.

Roppongi is known for its sleazy nightlife including bars with foreign hostesses.

In the best-known crime case in Roppongi, 21-year-old British bar hostess Lucie Blackman vanished in 2000, with her dismembered body recovered seven months later.

Convicted serial rapist Joji Obara, a wealthy businessman, was acquitted last year over Blackman's death for lack of evidence but is back on trial in an appeal. With reports from Apples Jalandoni and Agence France-Presse
