Corporate Net foreign buying in local bourse fell 18.9% in 2007
02/07/2008 | 06:25 PM

Net foreign buying in the Philippine Stock Exchange dropped 18.9 percent last year to P55.55 billion owing to the massive net foreign selling in the last two months of 2007.

Based on PSE data, net foreign selling amounted to P8.54 billion last November, its second worst one-month level, and another P8.15 billion the following month for a total of P16.69 billion in both months.

It was the biggest amount of net foreign selling for any two-month period in the record books of the PSE.

The selling frenzy continued in December as it only worsened last January, when stock prices retreated by 10 percent. That month, net foreign selling reached P11.59 billion to surpass the P9.4-billion net foreign selling record set in October 2003.

Lim warned that if the trend continues, the PSE will lose in six months all the net foreign buying that the stock market piled up last year.

“To help grasp the gravity of the situation, let me point out that net foreign buying in 2005 amounted to P23.53 billion; and we were then very happy at that time. Yet the foreign investments we lost in the past three months or since November exceeded all the net foreign buying that made us all happy in 2005," he said.

Net foreign buying is the difference between total foreign buying against total foreign selling.

PSE records showed that total foreign buying last year jumped 95 percent to P680.33 billion from P348.97 billion a year ago. Total foreign selling surged 122.7 percent to P624.76 billion from P280.48 billion.

Last January total foreign buying amounted to only P34.21 billion against P45.8 billion in total foreign selling.

Despite this, local stockbrokers projected the PSE index to end 2008 at the 3,700 level, saying that the “bull run is not yet over."

At a briefing on Thursday, Francisco Liboro, Association of Securities Analysts of the Philppines
(ASAP) president and PCCI Securities president, told reporters that a recovery in the US economy is seen in the second half of the year, thus, lending support to Wall Street and even the local bourse.

“The year-end target is 3,700, subject to review after the first half ," he said.

Liboro added that the forecast has already factored in the political tension brought about by the ouster of Pangasinan Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr. as speaker of the House and the revelations by I.T. consultant Rodolfo Noel Lozada Jr. about the $329.5-million National Broadband Network deal with Chinese company ZTE Corp.

“Personally, I think the political tension is the same as what we had for a couple of years now. Now of it's going to be a tipping point, that I don't know. I'm not saying that there won't be outrage. There will be outrage bu translating that to an upheaval is another thing," he said. - Cheryl Arcibal, GMANews.TV

Wall St dips after Fed says inflation woes remain
02/07/2008 | 09:16 AM

NEW YORK - Wall Street pulled back for the third straight day Wednesday as many investors, still uneasy about the U.S. economy, sold off after a Federal Reserve official suggested rising inflation could prevent the central bank from making further interest rate cuts.

Although the economic slowdown is a big concern, ''we must not lose sight of the other part of the Fed's dual mandate, which is price stability,'' Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia President Charles Plosser said, according to Dow Jones Newswires. The economy has been weakening but costs remain high, leading some economists to believe that the United States is headed for a troubling predicament known as stagflation.

Plosser's comments were not surprising, particularly since he is known for being more apt to argue against a rate cut than other Fed members. Nonetheless, the speech, along with a dismal sales report from Macy's, sapped some of Wall Street's relief Wednesday over better-than-expected fourth-quarter productivity and labor cost data and profit results from Walt Disney Co.

''It just shows you the market's really skittish and temperamental,'' said Jim Herrick, director of equity trading at Baird & Co. ''I really believe the market is driven by emotion, that there's this want to test the lows again.''

After climbing until early afternoon Wednesday, stocks switched gears and began extending the losses they made Tuesday, when the Dow Jones industrial average suffered its biggest percentage drop since Feb. 27, 2007. The trigger that day was the Institute for Supply Management's report of a surprising January contraction in the US service sector, news that bolstered the argument that the nation is in recession.

''There's no smoking gun here; we get one bad number, one good number... We're probably going to chop around here until investors get a better feel on this recession-or-no-recession question,'' said Phil Orlando, chief equity market strategist at Federated Investors.

According to preliminary calculations, the Dow fell 65.03, or 0.53 percent, to 12,200.10, after rising more than 100 points in earlier trading.

On Tuesday, the blue-chip index dropped 370 points, or 2.93 percent, and on Monday it lost 108 points. Because it rallied so strongly last week, it remains above the 15-month trading low it sank to in late January.

Broader stock indicators also gave up gains Wednesday. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 10.18, or 0.76 percent, to 1,326.46, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 30.82, or 1.33 percent, to 2,278.75. - AP

- Balitang Bisdak

Eighty-four Filipinos living in tents for nearly two months under a bridge in Jeddah trooped to the Philippine consulate Wednesday night (morning in Saudi Arabia) to set up camps there.

On Tuesday, 16 Filipino women and a child were picked up by immigration agents and brought to the deportation area about five kilometers away.

They were among more than a hundred Filipinos stranded in Saudi Arabia after running away from abusive employers, while others had expired visas.

The women and a two-and-a-half year-old girl boarded the immigration bus, along with other nationalities.

When five buses, four of which were already full, came on Wednesday morning, the immigration agents refused to pick up the Filipinos under the bridge in Al-Khandara district.

They were promised to be picked up on Saturday. After the buses left, the remaining Filipinos (72 men, 10 women and two children) decided to pack their things and went to the consulate to set up their tents in its premises. The consulate is about 10 minutes by car from Al-Khandara bridge.

The Filipinos came from Riyadh and the Eastern Province. Many of them have fallen victims to fixers who promised them “backdoor exit" in Jeddah in exchange for money.

They were taken to Al-Khandara flyover under which they put up tents. They were later moved under a nearby bridge where they were told to wait for immigration agents to pick them up for deportation.

Eric Jocson, one of the stranded Filipinos, said five buses came to pick up the stranded foreign nationals who have been staying in tents for nearly two months.

The immigration agents promised to return and pick up the other stranded foreign nationals.

Fernando Francisco, who serves as spokesman of the stranded Filipinos, said: “Nakakapanghinayang na hindi kami nakasakay (lahat) pero okay lang dahil ang importante ay ang mga babae ay nakasakay."

A few other women were left behind because they came late for the bus. "Napuno na ang bus kaya siguro hindi na pinapasok dahil sa late na sila dumating," Francisco said.

Last Sunday, 62 of the stranded Filipinos trooped to the Philippine consulate general to appeal for their repatriation.

Consul General Ezzedin Tago faced the Filipinos who took the opportunity to air their grievances and dismay over their situation under the bridge.

Among the reasons the Filipinos cited for running away from their employers were non-payment of, delayed or reduced salaries, maltreatment, harassment and other acts they could no longer tolerate.

There were women who complained of having experienced sexual abuse.

"We suffered enough. We waited long. Our families back home are also suffering. What we need is immediate help from our government to send us home," Francisco said.

Another stranded Filipino, Carlos Rebutar, said: "For us, the only solution is for the consul general to send us home even without due process because we know that it is not possible. We have no other option but to camp out inside the consulate in case the result of the meeting is not good."

Andrew M Ociones, chairperson of Migrante-Saudi Arabia chapter, advised the stranded Filipinos to unite and coordinate with each other in their efforts to be sent home.

"They can count on our support in terms of calls to the consulate to a act on their demands," he said.

Consul General Tago informed the Filipinos that he had talked to the head of the diplomatic security and that he was offered a legal process where they will pressure the employers to issue exit permits to the Filipinos so they could be sent home.

Tago said he had also visited the head of Saudi’s consular affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and submitted the summary of the grievances of the stranded Filipinos. He said he asked for help in legally repatriating them.

Further, Tago said he had asked the head of Saudi’s immigration and appealed for humanitarian consideration in allowing the Filipinos to leave and rejoin their families in the Philippines.

Francisco said 68 men, seven women and two young boys are still awaiting transfer from the Khandara bridge.

He said that they are hoping that the Philippine consulate will help send them back home.

"They already sent home our kababayans before and I don’t see any reason why they can not do it again. They did it in 2001 and also last year when they sent more than 900 stranded Filipinos, so I think that they can do it again," Francisco said.

Tago promised to do his best in resolving the cases involving the stranded Filipinos.

"I hope na ma-resolve ang kaso nila agad and I was assured that the deportation will look into their cases and I just heard that there is some positive action and we pray to the almighty and with everyone's cooperation na maayos ang mga pangyayari," Tago said. - Ronaldo Concha, GMANews.TV

Because I do not hope to turn again
Because I do not hope
Because I do not hope to turn
Desiring this man's gift and that man's scope
I no longer strive to strive towards such things
(Why should the agèd eagle stretch its wings?)
Why should I mourn
The vanished power of the usual reign?

Because I do not hope to know
The infirm glory of the positive hour
Because I do not think
Because I know I shall not know
The one veritable transitory power
Because I cannot drink
There, where trees flower, and springs flow, for there is nothing again

Because I know that time is always time
And place is always and only place
And what is actual is actual only for one time
And only for one place
I rejoice that things are as they are and
I renounce the blessèd face
And renounce the voice
Because I cannot hope to turn again
Consequently I rejoice, having to construct something
Upon which to rejoice

And pray to God to have mercy upon us
And pray that I may forget
These matters that with myself I too much discuss
Too much explain
Because I do not hope to turn again
Let these words answer
For what is done, not to be done again
May the judgement not be too heavy upon us

Because these wings are no longer wings to fly
But merely vans to beat the air
The air which is now thoroughly small and dry
Smaller and dryer than the will
Teach us to care and not to care Teach us to sit still.

Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death
Pray for us now and at the hour of our death.

why permit a non-American to have that glamour as what they called "American Dream".

Like anyone of us, has her / his own dream to alleviate from poverty, from the bondage of hardships... and all what she got was not purely and totally out of greed but partly a destiny....

What lucky she is...she gone with difficulties... and so do we...why curtail yourself to be happy when luck comes your way... it's the people that made of her...

One thing I know...I am one of the beneficiaries of their good projects while they were in power...and for that I am grateful.  She doesn't deserve to be a laughing stock....

IT goes like this: from forwarded email.

GEOGRAPHY OF A WOMAN:

Between the ages 15-20 a woman is like Africa.
She is half discovered... half wild.

Between the ages of 20-30 a woman is like America.
Fully discovered and scientifically perfect.

Between the ages of 30-35, she is like India and Japan.
Very HOT, WISE and BEAUTUFUL.

Between 35-40, a woman is like France.
She is half destroyed after the war but still desirable.

Between the ages of 40-50 she is like Germany.
She lost the war but not the hope.

Between the ages of 50-60, she is like Russia.
Very wide, very quite but nobody goes there.

Between the ages of 60-70, a woman is like England.
With glorious past but no future.

arang tumonga nako sa lugar oi

bag-ong migawas sa France, dia nako sa Germany jud
fightz dli mawad-an ug paglaum c Eya ;D
