The debate became heated and the Ph.D candidate said to the other guy, "listen, you don't understand. you're only a masteral candidate."

3rd Level: Empirical Level.

In the field of epistemology, empiricism refers to a
commitment to obtaining knowledge through sense experience (literally,
“based on experience” in Greek). Empiricism is frequently contrasted
with rationalism, which refers to knowledge derived purely through
thought and reason, and to more natural philosophical and religious
traditions of reaching conclusions. In the present context, the empirical
level includes hypotheses and methods and data of scientific research.
Hypotheses are tentative answers to questions, generally based on theory.

The primary role of research within this three-level schema is to link the
theoretical and the empirical. Theories need the support of data to remain
viable, whereas methods carry assumptions that are theoretical in nature.
Note that research findings do not contribute directly to the axiologic/
epistemic level or even to basic models. Those levels reflect fundamental
value commitments and personal preferences that are rarely modified on
the basis of additional data, especially the kind of data generated by scholarly
research.
#7242
2nd Level: Theoretical Level.

This is the level of models and theories. Theories are
premises to account for data, such as the FIRO theory of interpersonal
behavior in groups (Schutz, 1966) or the differential association theory in
the study of crime (Sutherland, 1924). The term model has been used in
many, often confusing ways in the social sciences. Here it refers to a
higher order theory, that is, a representational system at a higher level of
abstraction that can inform and be informed by alternative theories (close
to the framework or worldview that helps guide researchers and has been
identified as a “paradigm” by Thomas Kuhn [1962]). Thus, psychoanalysis
could be seen as a model, a wide lens with which to view and understand
the mysteries of human behavior. Each model carries with it certain
sets of assumptions. In the case of psychoanalysis, these assumptions
include the unifying importance of causal determinism and unconscious
motivation as core constructs. Note that this use of the term model differs
somewhat from the presentation of working models in Chapter 2.
#7243
1st level: Axiologic/Epistemic Level.

This is the underlying level of basic world
hypotheses that form the foundation for content and method within a
field of inquiry. Epistemology refers to the study of the nature of knowledge,
whereas axiology refers to the study of ethics, values, and aesthetics.
Examples of constructs at this level include the explanatory principle of
cause and effect and the notion of open systems.

re the position of arius, which he presented at the council... here's a funny tidbit.

one of the participants at that council was a bishop from myra, nicholas, who throughout the centuries has been traditionally regarded as the basis for santa claus.  (he was regarded as a saint long before canonization by the pope was formalized.)

At the the Council of Nicaea, Arius presented his case before all the attendees.  At some point, Nicholas could no longer tolerate the blasphemies Arius was saying against God, so he got up, walked up to him, and  punched Arius in the face, knocking him to the floor. Nicholas' fellow bishops were outraged that he lost control and hit Arius. The canons of the church forbid clergy from striking any human being, so he was brought before Constantine, who stripped him of his vestments and had him thrown into prison for what would have been the length of the council. Ashamed of his actions, Nicholas prayed to God and asked for forgiveness in the dark of his prison cell. (http://ourorthodoxlife.blogspot.com/)

Question and Answer / Re: Why did God create the world?
January 30, 2013, 11:56:34 AM
Answer:

For the Greater Glory of God !

293 Scripture and Tradition never cease to teach and celebrate this fundamental truth: "The world was made for the glory of God."134 St. Bonaventure explains that God created all things "not to increase his glory, but to show it forth and to communicate it",135 for God has no other reason for creating than his love and goodness: "Creatures came into existence when the key of love opened his hand."136 The First Vatican Council explains:

This one, true God, of his own goodness and "almighty power", not for increasing his own beatitude, nor for attaining his perfection, but in order to manifest this perfection through the benefits which he bestows on creatures, with absolute freedom of counsel "and from the beginning of time, made out of nothing both orders of creatures, the spiritual and the corporeal. . ."137

294 The glory of God consists in the realization of this manifestation and communication of his goodness, for which the world was created. God made us "to be his sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace",138 for "the glory of God is man fully alive; moreover man's life is the vision of God: if God's revelation through creation has already obtained life for all the beings that dwell on earth, how much more will the Word's manifestation of the Father obtain life for those who see God."139 The ultimate purpose of creation is that God "who is the creator of all things may at last become "all in all", thus simultaneously assuring his own glory and our beatitude."140

Why did God create the world?
#7265
Answer:

The Holy Bible refers to Abraham.

145 The Letter to the Hebrews, in its great eulogy of the faith of Israel's ancestors, lays special emphasis on Abraham's faith: "By faith, Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place which he was to receive as an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was to go."4 By faith, he lived as a stranger and pilgrim in the promised land.5 By faith, Sarah was given to conceive the son of the promise. And by faith Abraham offered his only son in sacrifice.6

146 Abraham thus fulfills the definition of faith in Hebrews 11:1: "Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen":7 "Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness."8 Because he was "strong in his faith", Abraham became the "father of all who believe".9

Question and Answer / Re: What is conjugal fidelity?
January 30, 2013, 11:38:39 AM
2364 The married couple forms "the intimate partnership of life and love established by the Creator and governed by his laws; it is rooted in the conjugal covenant, that is, in their irrevocable personal consent."147 Both give themselves definitively and totally to one another. They are no longer two; from now on they form one flesh. The covenant they freely contracted imposes on the spouses the obligation to preserve it as unique and indissoluble.148 "What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder."149

2365 Fidelity expresses constancy in keeping one's given word. God is faithful. The Sacrament of Matrimony enables man and woman to enter into Christ's fidelity for his Church. Through conjugal chastity, they bear witness to this mystery before the world.

St. John Chrysostom suggests that young husbands should say to their wives: I have taken you in my arms, and I love you, and I prefer you to my life itself. For the present life is nothing, and my most ardent dream is to spend it with you in such a way that we may be assured of not being separated in the life reserved for us. . . . 2. Divorce

2382 The Lord Jesus insisted on the original intention of the Creator who willed that marriage be indissoluble.174 He abrogates the accommodations that had slipped into the old Law.175

Between the baptized, "a ratified and consummated marriage cannot be dissolved by any human power or for any reason other than death."176

2383 The separation of spouses while maintaining the marriage bond can be legitimate in certain cases provided for by canon law.177

If civil divorce remains the only possible way of ensuring certain legal rights, the care of the children, or the protection of inheritance, it can be tolerated and does not constitute a moral offense.

2384 Divorce is a grave offense against the natural law. It claims to break the contract, to which the spouses freely consented, to live with each other till death. Divorce does injury to the covenant of salvation, of which sacramental marriage is the sign. Contracting a new union, even if it is recognized by civil law, adds to the gravity of the rupture: the remarried spouse is then in a situation of public and permanent adultery:

If a husband, separated from his wife, approaches another woman, he is an adulterer because he makes that woman commit adultery, and the woman who lives with him is an adulteress, because she has drawn another's husband to herself.178

2385 Divorce is immoral also because it introduces disorder into the family and into society. This disorder brings grave harm to the deserted spouse, to children traumatized by the separation of their parents and often torn between them, and because of its contagious effect which makes it truly a plague on society.

2386 It can happen that one of the spouses is the innocent victim of a divorce decreed by civil law; this spouse therefore has not contravened the moral law. There is a considerable difference between a spouse who has sincerely tried to be faithful to the sacrament of marriage and is unjustly abandoned, and one who through his own grave fault destroys a canonically valid marriage.179

#7274
1. Adultery

2380 Adultery refers to marital infidelity. When two partners, of whom at least one is married to another party, have sexual relations - even transient ones - they commit adultery. Christ condemns even adultery of mere desire.171 The sixth commandment and the New Testament forbid adultery absolutely.172 The prophets denounce the gravity of adultery; they see it as an image of the sin of idolatry.173

2381 Adultery is an injustice. He who commits adultery fails in his commitment. He does injury to the sign of the covenant which the marriage bond is, transgresses the rights of the other spouse, and undermines the institution of marriage by breaking the contract on which it is based. He compromises the good of human generation and the welfare of children who need their parents' stable union.

2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity,141 tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered."142 They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.

2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.

2359 Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.

lorenz, how could you...

a million thanks. these two songs were the first english religious songs i learned before my first communion.  you bet i have mangled some words, but my memory of the tune is as perfect as a child's smooth voice.

i feel it's been ages since these songs were sung, at least in the philippine setting, except when one attends wednesday's mother of perpetual help novena in baclaran in manila or at the redemptorist church in cebu city.  these songs seemed more common when i was an early grader.

(the mass i attended last sunday had unfamiliar tagalog songs.  i believe i spent three quarters of the mass sleeping.)

thanks again.

i remember this song very well. during my high school years, i was an altar server at St. Mary's Queen of Heaven Parish Church in New Jersey and this song was sung frequently. when i was an elementary student at St. Aloysius Catholic School in New York City, i volunteered as an altar server -- and this song was selected by my very good friend and priest, Fr. McGovern.

I will always remember how the beautiful church organs resonating the melody as the music echoed throughout the church -- in St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn, New York City.

I was lucky to find this song again in youtube. so i share it here. good to know that fr. roel and yourself know this song. ;)

We can not read Black Nazarene in the Bible. Jesus is so perfect in beauty from a child until He rise. Ngano nga ato man nga himoon nga Black Nazarene. Naa pa gani nga santo nino  nga gisayaw-sayaw sa sinulog nga negro kaayo. Usa kini sa pagpasipala sa atong buhing anak sa Dios, si Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ , as the only begotten son of God the Father, was completely DIVINE as well as completely MAN. The Wisdom and Divine Grace that sprang forth Him as an adult was the same as when Christ Jesus was a baby and a child.

I want you to turn to  Luke Chapter 2. Do you remember what happens here? The exposition occurs. The baby Jesus was taken to the temple and the Wisdom of God was made known -- the priest Simeon proclaimed, upon seeing the Christ Child:

"Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,
you now dismiss your servant in peace.
For my eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of all people,
a light for revelation to the Gentiles
and for glory to your people Israel."

- Luke 2: 29-32

If we fast forward some 10 years, Jesus Christ visits the temple as a boy and what does he do? He enters conversation with the learned priests and holy men in the temple. His Divinity and Humanity was made perfect.

The marvelation and sacred reverence for The Lord was even made manifest by Simeon. Why should we be prevented from revering a Sacred Image of the Lord God?

Blessings and Peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be unto you and your family, Brother in Christ,  Felix Daray.

Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy.  You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.

The Sacred Image of the Holy Child Jesus , Senor Santo Nino, represents an important phase in Philippine History. It represents the arrival and victory of the Christian Faith in our land.

The Blessed and Sacred Image of El Senor Santo Nino, the Image of the Holy Child Jesus, represents our people's entrance into Christendom.

he he he, i can't help but smile at the conversation between Hubag and Vhinz. Yes, Hubag is correct, in stressing the importance of faith. And so is Vhinz for sharing that verse from Matthew. :)

Brother Vhinz, the word 'Senior' is used in the Spanish language to mean "LORD".

In the Spanish language, Christians refer to Jesus Christ as "MI SENOR JESUS CHRISTO, MI SALVADOR Y MI FE", which means in English, "My LORD JESUS CHRIST, My Savior and My Faith."

When Filipinos say PIT SENYOR, it literally means, "Call to the Lord". We call the LORD...through our faith, our troubles, our trust.

:)

God Bless You, my friend.
