It depends, amigo.

If you're a traditionalist/conservative type, you'll find someone to your liking. If you're the opposite, then am sure you can still find someone else to your liking.

Women, just like men, come in different sizes, shapes, color, tastes.

The best thing in this predicament is that it makes the puzzle hunting--interesting. haha

Best,
Lorenzo

it is always a challenge to find the right mix in a relationship. with more and more women taking the step of independent character, the odds are becoming vast to succeed in a relationship. save for many filipinos who're faithful and still possess the strength of their self-reliance. as many TBs have shown. but the one i saw on TV, though not true to all, is a manifestation that this could be a social challenge (Western world) worth looking at--what a man/woman should look for in a relationship.

Quote from: hofelina on March 03, 2009, 06:55:21 AM
It´s a bane for sure. An independent woman is mostly intelligent, she is not boring, self-reliant and flexible. During hard times she could be the best partner, best in team work and resilient. In our country you could see Filipino women who struggles hard to to put the kids in school. They work double time as  homekeeper , finacial analyst( saan kukuha nga pera, saan pwedeng makautang, career oriented or simply a carenderia manager.
An independent woman will never be a boon or a curse to man therefore there is no fear that their state of masculinity will be put into question.

that's true, manay.

however, i think there are still men out there who like to have a partner they can mutually depend upon.

i find independent women, beautiful.
i find dependent women, adorable.

Exactly, glace!

Speaking of atheist, have you heard about this guy Michael Newdow?  He is a smart guy and an atheist.  Prior to the inauguration of Obama, he again resurfaced in the media to protest about Obama saying the line "... so help me God!"  Eh, maayo'g sya'y mosulti ngano gabut-an man nya unsay isulti ni Obama.  If he becomes president then he may not say that but why would he enforce on other people his choice of not believing God.   ::)

this makes me annoyed. they have the tendency to rob other's expression of belief, which is for me ironic in a sense because it's as our right as theirs. we don't mind them not believing or subscribing to any, and certainly respect their way of expressing it.

hahaha, because some of us have different perspective in life, ayessa, in certain way. as we age, we change our priorities, habits and choices. like that old woman, for her, to become blind is more preferable than to become deaf. which is surprising to me. it gets me into thinking, that what i can give up today, may not be the same tomorrow. have i thought of it before, no. which brings me to another level of thought, what if i'm not ready to give it up when the time comes that i am going to lose it?

you have a point. but is it not the reason where they get the so called "empowerment" because they need to be right in many respects, especially in dealing with relationship with the other gender, for to be right is empowering to them?

like the story above, as an example. for her, to leave the family is right. it's her exact independence--to be free from this relationship. but for the guy, it is devastating. for me, it isn't beyond reason, is it?

Has our Manhood and Machismo image become a thing of the past?

I happened to watch one night a TV reality show, The Bachelor. The good looking guy, in search of another woman of his well-heeled life, confessed that the reason of the break-up with his wife is her being independent. She left him broken because of that and their marriage in tatters.

Are our modern women too strong for us? Does a woman's sense of independence become a bane or boon for men these days?

LGU Philippines / Re: Women of the Philippines

DIAY UPDATE, MANAY. IN 2008, Phils kept its gender equality ranking.

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines retained its ranking as the best country in Asia where women are given equal opportunity along with their male counterparts, a Geneva-based group said.

In its 2008 Gender Gap Index, the World Economic Forum said the Philippines placed 6th in 130 countries included in the poll.

The Philippine ranking was the same that it had in 2007 and in 2006.

Dominating the list were European countries with Norway as the country which got the best rating in gender equality, followed by Finland, Sweden and Iceland, respectively.

New Zealand came in 5th, Denmark, 7th, Ireland, 8th, Netherlands, 9th and Latvia, 10th.

The Global Gender Gap Report 2008 is based on the innovative new methodology introduced in 2006 and includes detailed profiles that provide insight into the economic, legal and social aspects of the gender gap in each country. The Report measures the size of the gender gap in four critical areas of inequality between men and women such as economic participation and opportunity; educational attainment; political empowerment; and health and survival.

The WEF said the Report provides an insight into the gaps between women and men in over 92 percent of the world's population.

Of the Gender Gap Subindices, the Philippines was given a score of 8 in Economic Participation and Opportunity; 1 in Educational Attainment; 1 in Health and Survival; and 22 in Political Empowerment.

“The Philippines is one of two countries in Asia to have closed the gender gap on both education and health and is one of only eleven in the world to have done so.

However, the Philippines’ score relative to its performance in 2007 fell due to a drop in the perceived wage equality between women and men employed in similar positions and a decrease in the percentage of women ministers," the WEF said.

With the present economic gloom, the group said giving women equal opportunity will help in addressing the crisis.

“Greater representation of women in senior leadership positions within governments and financial institutions is vital not only to find solutions to the current economic turmoil, but to stave off such crises in future. At the World Economic Forum, we put strong emphasis on addressing this challenge with a multistakeholder approach through our global and regional Gender Parity Groups," said Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the WEF. - (GMANews.TV)

The urge to steer clear of the volatile market is understandable. Alternatives such as junk bonds and commodities are not without risk, but they may offer calmer rides.

By Catherine Holahan

Now is the time to buy stocks -- if you're Warren Buffett, with his iron stomach, ability to score deals and billions in the bank. But you're not Buffett. And you're shying away from stocks until a ride on the Dow industrials ($INDU) feels a bit less like a roller coaster.

So, what do you do with your money in the interim?

Treasury bills are unattractive. The 2.78% annual return on 10-year Treasurys likely won't keep pace with inflation, which was nearly 4% last year.

And, though real estate may look cheap right now, it is still a very risky business, given the amount of unsold homes out there.

MSN Money asked money managers and found five nonstock investments that seem attractive. Mind you, just because these investments are not stocks doesn't mean they're without risk. Yet they look like stable bets compared with stocks, which have set records for volatility in recent months.

Buy junk

Bonds seem less risky than equities at the moment. Bond investors can be wiped out if a company goes bankrupt, but they're paid, before stockholders, a share of whatever assets remain. Bonds don't have the potential to exponentially increase returns like stocks, but few stocks seem capable of delivering significant gains this year.

High-yield bonds -- aka junk -- offer the most potential. Many investors have fled junk bonds because they have a greater risk of default than higher-rated bonds, but junk also offers a potentially higher rate of return.

Even some blue-chip companies considered to have a much lower risk of default declared bankruptcy, so why buy bonds of companies known to have a high risk of default? After all, the default rate for high-yield bonds is already 10%, and bond rating agency Fitch Ratings anticipates it could rise as high as 18% this year.

Because the credit crunch has also made it more difficult for companies to issue bonds of any sort, as investors have shied away from risk. As a result, junk-bond prices -- which fall as yields on those bonds rise -- look artificially depressed, and individual investors are starting to notice.

"A very high proportion of the high-yield market is already trading at distressed levels," says Mariarosa Verde, a Fitch analyst. "Some investors may find the risk-reward balance attractive at this point."

Investors have poured nearly $3.5 billion into junk bonds since the beginning of 2009, according to EPFR Global, which tracks the market for funds trading in that $850 billion sector.

"I think people are scared, and they figure, 'Why be greedy and buy the equity and take huge risk?'" said Zachary Cooper, a portfolio manager in New York who specializes in fixed income. "People believe they are getting a historically equitylike yield in junk bonds and taking less risk."

Many are calling the past 10 years in the stock market a 'lost decade,' but Tim Middleton has a different perspective.

Of all junk bonds, high-yield municipal bonds appear most promising, certified financial planner Andrew Horowitz says. Municipalities across the country have issued bonds because their tax revenues are down, in part, due to mortgage defaults. The $787 billion federal stimulus package should give these local governments an infusion of cash, making defaults on these bonds less likely.

For investors who don't want to pick through the trash of individual junk bonds, exchange-traded funds holding high-yield bonds are another opportunity. ETFs are funds that track a particular index or sector and are popular partly because they can give investors the ability to trade a group of different companies' shares as if they were a single stock.

This month, Van Eck Global of New York launched the Market Vectors High-Yield Municipal Index ETF (HYD, news, msgs), pegged to the performance of the Barclays Capital Municipal Custom High Yield Composite Index. About a fourth of the index is made up of investment-grade triple-B bonds. The other three-fourths are composed of non-investment-grade bonds.

Buy food

No matter how low the market goes, people have to eat. That is Horowitz's motto and one reason he's looking at the commodity markets.

"Nibbling on this kind of investment is an interesting play," Horowitz says. "A stock can go out of business; you can't do the same thing to a commodity. You can't bankrupt a commodity. People have to eat. That is the bottom line."

Last summer's spike in oil prices and the enthusiasm for biofuels sent prices of commodities such as corn, rice and soy skyrocketing in June and July. Then they crashed. Americans' grocery bills, however, didn't drop in tandem. Food prices ended the year up 5.8%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Price Index.

Higher food prices coupled with steady demand should ultimately lead to a strong market for agricultural commodities, Horowitz says. One ETF in this area he likes is the PowerShares DB Commodity Index Tracking Fund (DBC, news, msgs).

Buy money

The recently approved $787 billion stimulus package and the massive bailouts by governments across Europe and Asia would caution against buying currencies. Printing all that money, after all, has to be inflationary. Right?

Yes. But the worth of any currency is relative.

As long as the same inflationary pressures are at play the world over, it doesn't matter that the dollar will eventually be worth less -- as long as the values of the British pound, the Japanese yen or the European Union's euro have similarly declined.

Of course, inflation won't ultimately affect all currencies in the same way. Some countries have promised to sell more debt and print more money than others. The key is to bet on -- or against -- the right currency.

Horowitz is betting against the euro. He believes the multitude of countries that decide the monetary policies underpinning the euro's value will make the currency difficult to stabilize. As a result, he likes Market Vectors Double Short Euro (DRR, news, msgs), an exchange-traded note (similar to an ETF) that gains 2% for every 1% decline in the euro's value relative to the dollar. It also, importantly, loses twice as much for every gain in the euro's value.

Bet against Treasurys

It may seem counterintuitive to both bet on the dollar and against Treasurys. But making both moves is a way to hedge. That reduces your risk by giving you a way to make money when the dollar goes up or down (yet limits your upside, too). And reducing risk is one of the main reasons not to be in the stock market now. Right?

Likely, the dollar will strengthen in the short term, making Treasurys more palatable. But the dollar will weaken in the long run as investors' appetite for risk gradually returns. As the dollar's value decreases, Treasurys become less attractive. Hedging allows you to avoid having to call the moment when the dollar's transition will happen.

When the dollar does start weakening, investors will stop hoarding Treasurys and buy something -- anything -- capable of at least beating inflation. That's the argument for buying an ETF that gains as Treasury prices fall.

The argument for a weak dollar is made stronger by the huge federal stimulus package. Pumping all that money into the economy should fuel inflation, especially if the stimulus succeeds in spurring business and consumer spending as well as government largesse. The more inflation rises, the more people will want an asset capable of at least retaining their money's value. That makes Treasurys, with the current yields, even less attractive.

One short ETF, ProShares UltraShort 20+ Year Treasury (TBT, news, msgs), has risen 27% since a Dec. 30 low of $35.85 a share. The ETF is structured to go up twice the amount that the Lehman Bros. 20+ Year U.S. Treasury index goes down each day.

Keep cash

Here's a twist on a Wall Street adage: When there's blood in the streets, stuff your money in your mattress.

As depressing as that may sound, it's the mantra of many now-risk-averse investors. And as long as people are getting out of the market -- and staying out -- cash will be king.

That said, you needn't keep your money in a low-interest savings account. Money market accounts have higher interest rates and the same Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. protection as your average savings account.

Rates of return for most money market accounts, however, still don't beat last year's inflation rate of 3.85%. Some of the best ones offer just 2.5%, according to Bankrate.com, which tracks the rates offered by different banks across the country.

That rate is good as long as inflation remains near zero -- where it was in January -- or reverses course. But it's pretty awful if inflation returns the near 3% rate that has been the norm in the past decade.

In addition, unlike a plain old savings account, money market accounts don't let investors easily move their money into more-attractive arenas.

Still, with a money market account, you're not locked in for as long a period as, say, a 10-year Treasury bond. Most funds let you make several withdrawals a month.

Brad Pitt Worried Angelina Jolie Will Knife His Ass
March 1, 2009

Supposedly, Brad Pitt has purchased his lady-love Angelina Jolie anger management classes in an attempt to keep her from one day throwing a knife at him in a loss of her temper.

For her role in Tomb Raider, Angie received instruction in knife-throwing and a source claims, "Angelina has quite a temper on her and she has been known to throw a few knives around when she is angry."

In addition, "Brad is terrified Angelina will one day hit him with a knife, and cause him a serious injury or worse." What could be worse? Scarring that pretty face of his, of course.

Well, as much as I would love to believe this rumor because it is AWESOME, I highly doubt that a mother of six is tossing knives around willy-nilly. (socialite life)

Women who pay for sex

By Hannah Barnes
BBC Radio 5 Live

It's not just men who pay prostitutes to sleep with them. For some women, paying for sex is more convenient than cruising bars and clubs trying to find men.

"They don't want to be found out. They want to do something private - it's their own world, a part of their life that they want to be secret."

Nicole runs a high-class escort agency in the West Midlands, whose clients include women as well as men. Her male escorts host "in-calls" for female clients at a large country cottage, three quarters of a mile away from the nearest town. The exterior gives no clue as to what goes on inside and instead looks more like a French chalet.

Male escorts know that some of their clients aren't single. One says some women don't think paying for sex is cheating, in the same way that having an affair would be.

For women who are attached, the risks of going to a bar or a public place to meet a man are often seen as too high, and so having a discreet hide-away can be crucial.

"They need to be coming to somewhere where they won't be seen by somebody passing who knows them or a neighbour," Nicole says.

When Catarina took the decision to see an escort, she was petrified.

"I didn't think I'd ever want to see an escort. I always thought it was other people who did that kind of thing - not somebody like myself."

But she is just one of an unknown number of women in the UK who are willing to pay for sex. Born with a disability, sex had always been painful and uncomfortable for Catarina. Her ex-boyfriends had made her feel guilty about not being able to enjoy sex, and left her confidence at rock bottom.

Superman role-play

Andrew changed that. After just one session, Catarina says she felt "high as a kite".

"I was able to have sex that was completely pain-free. My self-esteem grew. My confidence grew. If it wasn't for Andrew I wouldn't be where I am today. I wouldn't be as confident as I am, as sexually aware as I am. I think I grew up as well."

It's not just women who have a disability or partners at home that are choosing to pay for sex, rather than cruising night clubs or bars for male company.

Catarina's escort, Andrew Rosetta, has written a book about his 10-year career called Whatever She Wants and he says women come to him for the chance to be selfish.

Sitting in his plush flat in London's West End, which he owns outright thanks to his sex work, he recalls a solicitor who used to be a regular client.

"She's very articulate, bright - she's a partner in her firm. But after session three she told me this guilty secret: that she'd really like to take advantage of Superman.

"I would arrive at her house in a suit. I'd go along in glasses; underneath my suit is a Superman outfit and we would go through this role-play.

"She would at one point bring out a green rock on a chain which was kryptonite - that makes Superman begin to lose his power. And of course when Superman loses his power, he's available to be taken advantage of."

Male escorts say women choose to pay for sex for all types of reasons - to gain sexual confidence, to experiment and some are busy business women who just don't have the time to meet men.

Daniel has been working part-time as an escort in London for the last year, lured by the prospect of making some extra cash in the economic downturn. He was educated at one of the city's best private schools, and like Andrew is highly articulate.

"It's no more seedy than somebody going out to a bar, getting a bit drunk and then ending up going home with a complete stranger. What's the difference? With what I do, you know what you're getting, there's no illusion. You pay your money. You get what you get. You meet some guy at the bar, you don't know what you get - he could be anyone."

So how much do these services cost? In London the top straight male escorts charge at least £100 per hour - often more.

But Nicole says that in the West Midlands, the men on her books offer rates of around £60 because of a shortage of work at the moment. In this economic climate, times are tough, even for the male escort.

World Daily News / Uranium in Iran?
March 02, 2009, 12:21:55 PM

Iran's uranium 'enough for bomb'

Iran has enough nuclear material to build a bomb, the United States' most senior military commander has said.

"We think they do, quite frankly," Adm Mike Mullen, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, told CNN.

"And Iran having a nuclear weapon, I've believed for a long time, is a very, very bad outcome for the region and for the world," he said.

Iran says its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful, but the West suspects it is seeking nuclear weapons.

'One bomb' possible

A report issued by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) two weeks ago said Tehran had built up a stockpile of fissile nuclear material.

This raised concerns in the West that Iran might have understated by one-third how much uranium it has enriched.

The IAEA report showed a major increase in Iran's reported stockpile of low-enriched uranium (LEU) since November to 1,010 kg.

Some physicists believe this stockpile is enough to be converted into enough highly enriched uranium to build one bomb.

The amount "is sufficient for a nuclear weapons breakout capability", David Albright, president of the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security, told AFP news agency.

US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has adopted a more cautious approach.

"I think that there has been a continuing focus on how do you get the Iranians to walk away from a nuclear weapons programme? They're not close to a stockpile. They're not close to a weapon at this point," he told NBC on Sunday.

President Barack Obama has stated he wants to engage in diplomacy with Tehran to ensure it does not build nuclear weapons, and has described the country's nuclear programme as an "urgent problem" the international community must confront.

Wa pa gani na-approve ang right of reply bill, nag-abuso na ni si Karaan sa iyang pag-reply ni Daarol, which is to douse allegations of corruption at the City Hall with disproportionately foul septic water.

Can't believe this thing can happen among the very gentle and civilized Boholanos! And the verbal exchange between the mayor and dyRD is grating to the ears. Why can't people just address the issues without getting personal? Why can't the Mayor's office just disclose the financial records of the city, to which the public has the right of access, anyway?

My two cent's worth is that we can't really legislate decency. We have existing libel laws, to which those who are unjustly maligned by the media can resort. Since libel proceedings are done within the court, we don't have to put up with those who wash dirty linens in the public. What do you think will happen if parties who suffer, justly or unjustly, from media reports are given equivalent public venues to strike back? If the written answers are as septic as Karaan's toilet bowl, or personal, or incendiary, don't you think these will just escalate personal or public contentions? I think it is better to seek redress in court, where dignities can be preserved and protected.

well said, bene.

However, COA's report did not include the foregoing schedule for unknown reasons.

So, the opposition lawmakers in the city asked the City Accountant and Auditor's office for a copy of the said schedule to no avail.

The frustrated but adamant Vice Mayor Veloso then asked the COA central office for the copy.  It was then that opposition obtained a copy of the list.

Chinese E-Cigs Gain Ground Amid Safety Concerns
By AUDRA ANG Associated Press Writer
BEIJING February 27, 2009 (AP)

With it's slim white body and glowing amber tip, it can easily pass as a regular cigarette. It even emits what look like curlicues of white smoke.

Miao Nan, executive director of Ruyan Group Ltd., puffs an electronic smoke while he shows other design during an interview at his office in Beijing, China, Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009. Ruyan Group Ltd, Beijing-based company was the first to develop electronic cigarettes and says its patented atomizer technology allows users to get an immediate nicotine fix without being harmed by the hazardous chemicals produced when tobacco is burned.

The Ruyan V8, which produces a nicotine-infused mist absorbed directly into the lungs, is just one of a rapidly growing array of electronic cigarettes attracting attention in China, the U.S. and elsewhere â€" and the scrutiny of world health officials.

Marketed as a healthier alternative to smoking and a potential way to kick the habit, the smokeless smokes have been distributed in swag bags at the British film awards and hawked at an international trade show.

Because no burning is involved, makers say there's no hazardous cocktail of cancer-causing chemicals and gases like those produced by a regular cigarette. There's no secondhand smoke, so they can be used in places where cigarettes are banned, the makers say.

The World Health Organization issued a statement in September warning there was no evidence to back up contentions that e-cigarettes are a safe substitute for smoking or a way to help smokers quit.

It also said companies should stop marketing them that way, especially since the product may undermine smoking prevention efforts because they look like the real thing and may lure nonsmokers, including children.

"There is not sufficient evidence that (they) are safe products for human consumption," Timothy O'Leary, a communications officer at the WHO's Tobacco Free Initiative in Geneva, said this week.

The laundry list of WHO's concerns includes the lack of conclusive studies and information about e-cigarette contents and their long-term health effects, he said.

Unlike other nicotine-replacement therapies such as patches for slow delivery through the skin, gum or candy for absorption in the mouth, or inhalers and nasal sprays, e-cigarettes have not gone through rigorous testing, O'Leary said.

Ruyan â€" which means "like smoking" â€" introduced the world's first electronic cigarette in 2004. It has patented its ultrasonic atomizing technology, in which nicotine is dissolved in a cartridge containing propylene glycol, the liquid that is vaporized in smoke machines in nightclubs or theaters and is commonly used as a solvent in food.

Prices range from about $60 to $240. Kits include battery chargers and cartridges that range in flavors (from fruit to menthol) and nicotine levels (from zero â€" basically a flavored mist â€" to 16 milligrams, higher than a regular cigarette.) The National Institutes of Health says regular cigarettes contain about 10 milligrams of nicotine. (excerpts)

New Yorker Launches Barking Mad Lawsuit

NEW YORK (AFP) - A Manhattan lawyer is suing for half a million dollars because she can't stand the constant yapping of two Chihuahuas from a nearby apartment, press reports said Friday.

The lawyer said the "whining, barking, yapping and squealing" from the floor below is ruining her health, the Daily News and New York Post reported.

The plaintiff, 62-year-old Paulette Taylor, says in the 500,000 dollar lawsuit against her neighbor and the apartment building that the pets "bark in a manner that is offensive, constant, continuous and incessant."

This wasn't the only big-dollar news this week in New York's famously eccentric pet world.

On Wednesday, a judge ruled that the multi-billion-dollar estate of the late property tycoon Leona Helmsley can be distributed to more than just dogs.

Before dying in 2007 Helmsley left 12 million dollars to her dog Trouble and said her fortune should go to charities helping dogs.

The judge ruled that non-canine charities are also eligible.

Sky-high costs to use a toilet?

LONDON (Reuters) - Ryanair's chief executive said Europe's largest budget carrier might start charging passengers for using the toilet while flying, but his spokesman cautioned Michael O'Leary often just made things up at will.

"One thing we have looked at in the past and are looking at again is the possibility of maybe putting a coin slot on the toilet door so that people might actually have to spend a pound ($1.43) to spend a penny in future," O'Leary told BBC television.

He said this would not inconvenience passengers traveling without cash. "I don't think there is anybody in history that has got on board a Ryanair aircraft with less than a pound."

A spokesman said the airline had considered the fee as a possible source of extra revenue since passengers had the option of not using the toilet on board, but added that "maybe O'Leary was just taking the p*ss this morning."

"Michael makes a lot of this stuff up as he goes along and while this has been discussed internally there are no immediate plans to introduce it," Stephen McNamara said in a statement.

O'Leary has a reputation as a cost-cutter, expanding Ryanair by offering low headline fares and charging extra for items such as additional luggage.

Last week, Ryanair announced it was to shut all check-in desks at airports and have passengers check in online instead.

"We're all about finding ways of raising discretionary revenue so we can keep lowering the cost of air travel," he said.

Atheist Bus Ads, Rejected In Several Canadian cities, Set To roll out In Calgary

By Bill Graveland, The Canadian Press
ADVERTISEMENT

CALGARY - The debate over whether they should be allowed has been settled. Now, the battle to influence the minds of the public will begin as a series of atheist bus ads is set to roll out in Calgary Monday.

The ad campaign, paid for by the Freethought Association of Canada, features ads reading: "There is probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life."

A similar campaign generated controversy and anger in the United Kingdom and Australia and several Canadian cities have rejected the ads including Halifax, Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna, B.C., London, Ont., and Ottawa.

Only Toronto and Calgary - the bastion of conservatism and the land of cowboys, oil wells and rodeos - are allowing the atheists to get their message out on the side of city buses.

"Possibly the sort of red-neck reputation and the enthusiasm for free speech aren't entirely incompatible," chuckled Janet Keeping, president of the Sheldon Chumir Foundation for Ethics in Leadership, a non-profit organization that looks at activities involving human rights and free speech across the country.

"You could say that standing up for free speech is completely consistent with protecting fundamental values of our system," said Keeping. "The ads are pretty mild stuff. Some of the other jurisdictions are just ready to run roughshod over fundamental freedoms like freedom of speech."

Not everyone sees the bus ads as a threat.

The United Church of Canada launched its own tongue-in-cheek campaign which includes the message: "There's probably a God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life."

But others say it's no laughing matter.

The Islamic Supreme Council of Canada is ready to buy its own bus ads promoting an all-faith approach to religion.

"We know that we live in a free society where people have the right to express themselves, but this is a serious debate - this is not a joke and people have strong feelings," said Imam Syed Sohawardy.

"This is a very serious issue. We see this as a threat toward religion - not Islam, but all faiths."

Calgary's Roman Catholic Bishop Fred Henry has also expressed his concern about the atheist campaign and had pondered buying his own controversial ads promoting positions such as pro-life.

"I think that we already pay enough by way of taxes and user fees to support Calgary Transit - my money will go to house the homeless," he said. "But the principle has been established and should we decided to aggressively promote the right to life issue, they won't have ground to stand on."

Ron Collins, with Calgary Transit, said there will be six buses carrying the Freethought Association message for one month. He said the controversy seemed to have died down in recent weeks.

"I don't think there's as much attention being paid as there was at the start of this," he said. "We're following the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards and if it meets the code, it's allowed and this meets the criteria."

Keeping said she was a bit shocked at the passion the debate generated and had expected most Canadians to be a little more open minded.

"We seem to have cultivated this view that we all have the right not to be offended," she said. "That we all have the right never to be exposed to things that might challenge what we might think is proper and true and good.

"I can understand public concern when it comes to Criminal Code stuff, when it comes to advocating violence, advocacy of hatred," Keeping said.

"There is nothing about these bus ads that comes even close."

We know how embarrassing it is when people keep repeating what they're saying to us because we're as deaf as a post. but it is also almost the same, when we see nothing of what's going on. it sparked a short discussion between the two of us.

what's your take?

YET we're importing rice from other countries, which have used varieties developed from our country. so ironic.

but i'm proud of this achievement.
