Pananampalataya, Himala at Pag-asa:

Luisa Avancenia, 56-anyos, maybahay at taga-Caloocan City.

Pananampalataya at pag-asa

Talk of the Town / PNOY DUDA SA SHOOTOUT!
January 10, 2013, 11:04:14 AM

“However, I asked for a lot of the details at doon sa details medyo napag-isip na ako doon sa salaysay na ibinigay, at brining-up (bring up) ko ito kay Director General Purisima and (to) Secretary (Mar) Roxas also na to look into what seemingly was not normative or normal behavior,” ayon sa Pangulo.

“Well, there will be justice. ‘Yung where it will lead to, I cannot tell at this point in time,” dagdag pa nito. (Boyet Jadulco)

(JBSalarzon/Rossel Calderon)

Bible Study / How to Know God
January 10, 2013, 10:22:05 AM
You were designed to know God in a personal wayâ€"to have a relationship with Him, through His Son, Jesus Christ. How do you start a relationship with God?

1. Realize that you are a sinner.
No matter how good a life we try to live, we still fall miserably short of being a good person. That is because we are all sinners. The Bible says, "No one is goodâ€"not even one." We cannot become who we are supposed to be without Jesus Christ.

2. Recognize that Jesus Christ died on the cross for you.
The Bible tells us that "God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while were still sinners." This is the Good News, that God loves us so much that He sent His only Son to die in our place when we least deserved it.

3. Repent of your sin.
The Bible tells us, "Repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away." The word repent means to change our direction in life. Instead of running from God, we can run toward Him.

4. Receive Jesus Christ into your life.
Becoming a Christian is not merely believing some creed or going to church. It is having Christ Himself take residence in your life and heart. Jesus said, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in . . ." If you would like to have a relationship with Christ, simply pray this prayer and mean it in your heart.

"Dear Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner. I believe You died for my sins. Right now, I turn from my sins and open the door of my heart and life. I confess You as my personal Lord and Savior. Thank You for saving me. Amen."

Inspiration & Hope / Who Is A Real Friend?
January 10, 2013, 10:19:39 AM
A Friend Is...

Anyone can stand by you when you are right,
But a Friend will stand by you even when you are wrong.

A simple friend identifies himself when he calls.
A real friend doesn't have to.

A simple friend opens a conversation
With a full news bulletin on his life.
A real friend says, "What's new with you?"

A simple friend thinks the problems you whine about are recent.
A real friend says,
"You've been whining about the same thing for 14 years.
Get off your duff and do something about it."

A simple friend has never seen you cry.
A real friend has shoulders soggy from your tears.

A simple friend doesn't know your parents' first names.
A real friend has their phone numbers in his address book.

A simple friend brings a bottle of wine to your party.
A real friend comes early to help you cook
And stays late to help you clean.

A simple friend hates it when you call after he has gone to bed.
A real friend asks you why you took so long to call.

A simple friend seeks to talk with you about your problems.
A real friend seeks to help you with your problems.

A simple friend wonders about your romantic history.
A real friend could blackmail you with it.

A simple friend, when visiting, acts like a guest.
A real friend opens your refrigerator and helps himself.

A simple friend thinks the friendship is over
When you have an argument.
A real friend knows that it's not a friendship until after
You've had a fight.

A simple friend expects you to always be there for them.
A real friend expects to always be there for you!

Philippine Business News / National flu outbreak widens
January 10, 2013, 10:16:46 AM
CBS News) The national flu epidemic is getting worse by the day: On Wednesday, Boston -- with a population of at least 600,000 -- declared a public health emergency after the virus killed more than a dozen people.

At least three more states -- Montana, South Dakota and Arizona -- are now reporting widespread flu, bringing the total to 44 states. And the CDC says the percentage of people going to the hospital for treatment of flu symptoms has doubled in the past month.

The emergency in Boston was declared after confirmed cases of flu reached 700. There were just 70 at this time last year. Across the state, 18 patients have died.

"In the last two weeks alone we've doubled our number," said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, the executive director of the Boston Public Health Commission. "So, if we continue at this rate to see new cases, we'll have an explosion of flu in the city of Boston. We really need to get ahead of it at this point in time."

Flu surge leads to Boston public health emergency
Centers for Disease Control: High level of flu reports in 29 states

To do that, officials are urging vaccination for everyone six months and older. Clinics will be giving free shots this weekend.

Lehigh Valley Hospital in Pennsylvania is getting as many as 100 patients a day with flu-like symptoms. A tent has been set up to handle the less serious cases.

"We need a full functioning active emergency dept for the community," said nurse Terry Burger, who is in charge of infection control. "And this just enables us to see the patients that are not as sick. So mild illness, mild injuries...see them quickly, and then discharge them."

About 60 miles south in Chadds Ford, the entire Coan family got the vaccine, but eight-year-old Alex came down with the flu anyway.

"You cough a lot," he said, "kind of sneeze a little, lay in bed all day."

His mother Christine said: "As a mom, I was very disappointed that he got the flu, because I had to fight him tooth and nail to get the flu shot."

In recent years, the vaccine has been about 60 to 70 percent effective at preventing the flu. Recently, scientists discovered this year's vaccine is not protecting against a specific strain.

Dr. William Shaffner, who is on the panel that decides what goes in the vaccine, said: "There is an influenza B strain that's out there, an additional strain that's causing about 10 percent of the mischief. And that's not in the vaccine and that accounts for some of the influenza that's out there."

The CDC told CBS News this year's vaccine is still very well-matched to the strains that are out there. Even when the flu vaccine does not prevent the flu, it can still stop complications including pneumonia and even death.

As for how does this outbreak compares historically -- a lot of people don't realize that the flu varies in intensity from year to year. In some years it's mild; it could be moderate; or it gets to be severe. The CDC told CBS News that this is a moderate to severe season, but it's well within what's historically a range of normal.

LGU Philippines / SANGGOL IBINEBENTA NI MOMMY NG P15K
January 07, 2013, 02:11:19 PM

Inspiration & Hope / Rags to Riches
January 04, 2013, 09:43:27 AM
In a time of rising inequality and sluggish growth, rags to riches stories are harder than ever to come by. Indeed, many of the richest people in the world were born into their wealth.

That makes it even more essential that we remember the people who started with nothing, and through hard work, talent, grit, and a bit of luck, managed to rise to the very top.

These 20 stories remind us that it's possible to overcome just about anything, from parents passing away, to extreme poverty, and more.

Maria Das Gracas Silva Foster escaped a Brazilian shantytown to become Petrobras' first female CEO

financialtimes/FlickrThe current head of Brazilian oil giant Petrobras spent her childhood in Morro do Adeus, an extremely poor neighborhood that became a shantytown. Her mother worked constantly and her father was an alcoholic. She collected cans and paper to make extra money.

She started as an intern at Petrobras in 1978, but broke through barriers to become the company's first female head of field engineering. Bloomberg reports that her tireless work ethic has earned her the nickname Caveirao, for the armored vehicles police use to clean up crime ridden Brazilian neighborhoods. She became the company's first female CEO in February.

Do Won Chang worked three jobs to make ends meet before starting Forever 21

LAEDCorp via YouTubeDo Won Chang and his wife, Jin Sook, moved to America from Korea in 1981. When they first arrived, Do Won was forced to work three jobs at the same time to support them, as a janitor, a gas station attendant, and in a coffee shop. Eventually, they were able to open their first clothing store in 1984.

That one store grew into Forever 21, which pioneered fast fashion and is now a multi-national, 480 store empire that generates around $3 billion in sales a year. It's a family business, with the couple's daughters Linda and Esther helping to run the company.

January 04, 2013, 09:42:06 AM
In a time of rising inequality and sluggish growth, rags to riches stories are harder than ever to come by. Indeed, many of the richest people in the world were born into their wealth.

That makes it even more essential that we remember the people who started with nothing, and through hard work, talent, grit, and a bit of luck, managed to rise to the very top.

These 20 stories remind us that it's possible to overcome just about anything, from parents passing away, to extreme poverty, and more.

'Daytime comet' to arrive in 2013

Skygazers are in for a treat when Comet Ison passes by the Earth later this year: it's expected to be so bright that it will outshine the moon and be visible even in broad daylight.

Filipino astronomer Frederic Gabriana calculated that Comet Ison will be seen in the Philippines by November.

Space.com was cited in an earlier report as saying that it might even be seen during the daytime on Nov. 28, 2013 â€"weather permitting, of course.

Related story: Approaching comet may outshine the moon

Officially known as Comet C/2012 S1, Ison was first discovered in September, 2012, by Russian astronomers Vitali Nevski and Artyom Novichonok at the International Scientific Optical Network (or "ISON," hence the name) near Kislovodsk.

The comet was first seen near the constellations of Gemini and Cancer.

"Comet Ison could draw millions out into the dark to witness what could be the brightest comet seen in many generations â€" brighter even than the full Moon," astronomer David Whitehouse said in an article on the UK's The Independent.

'Galactic litter'

Comets are icy rocks within the solar system that display a fuzzy atmosphere called a "coma," and a visible tail, especially when it comes closer to the Sun.

Comets are believed to be made up of ammonia, carbon dioxide, methane, and water.

Also read: Never-Before-Seen Stage of Planet Birth Revealed

Most of the comets are thought to be residents of Oort Cloud and Kuiper Belt, some 5,000 to 100,000 astronomical units (AU) away from the Earth (one AU = 150 million km).

"Occasionally, giant molecular clouds, stars passing nearby, or tidal interactions with the Milky Way's disc disturb the orbits of some of these bodies in the outer region of the Oort Cloud, causing the object to fall into the inner solar system as a so-called long-period comet," NASA said.

Comet Ison for one, is believed to be a castaway from Oort Cloud.

2013: A year of comets

But Ison seems not to be the only comet visiting the Earthlings this year.

"Another comet, called Comet 2011 L4 (PanSTARRS), was discovered last year and in March and April it could also be a magnificent object in the evening sky," Whitehouse wrote.

In other news: Pinoys urged to plan 2013 holidays ahead

Comet 2011 L4, discovered in the constellation Libra on June 2011, may not shine as bright as Ison but will still be visible to the naked eye.

"The comet is expected to be brightest in February or March 2013, when it makes its closest approach to the sun. At that time, the comet is expected to be visible low in the western sky after sunset, but the bright twilight sky may make it difficult to view," University of Hawaii Institute of Astronomy said in a press release.

"2013 could be the year of the great comets," Whitehouse added.

One-time deal?

Whitehouse also said that Comet Ison "may never return."

"Its tail points outward now as the solar wind is at its back, and it fades and the comet falls quiet once more, this time forever," the astronomer concluded. â€" TJD, GMA News

MANILA - The death of a girl hit by celebratory gunfire on New Year's Eve sparked calls Thursday for stricter gun controls in the Philippines, where unlicensed weapons are widely blamed for rampant violence.

The girl, Stephanie Ella, aged seven, died Wednesday from a gunshot wound to the head, triggering outrage and condemnation of poor law enforcement that allows hundreds of thousands of unregistered firearms to be on the streets.

"This incident should not be allowed to become just another statistic," Vice President Jejomar Binay said in a statement.

"We have enough laws to penalize but the problem has always been in the enforcement of laws," he stressed, as he challenged the police to catch the person responsible for Ella's death.

Ella and her father were watching a fireworks display outside their home in a Manila suburb on Monday when a bullet, apparently fired from celebratory gunfire, struck her.

Ella was the second young victim to die from stray bullets in New Year's eve celebrations, when gun owners traditionally fire bullets into the air or explode powerful firecrackers to make noise.

A four year-old boy was also killed, while a 16-year-old was in a coma after being wounded in a similar incident.

Ella's ordeal, however, was prominently covered in national media, as her grief-stricken parents tensely waited by her hospital bedside as doctors lost the battle to save her.

An outpouring of sympathy followed, led by the office of President Benigno Aquino -- himself a keen sports shooter -- which issued a statement condemning her senseless death.

Prominent anti-crime crusader Dante Jimenez said the government should impose "a total gun ban during the holidays" and not only during elections, when rival politicians are known to engage in blood feuds.

"There should be no guns on the streets during these times. That is the only way," he said.

However, he said the bigger problem was the failure of the authorities to seize all illegal firearms in the face of mounting violence.

There were 1.2 million registered firearms in the Philippines as of last year, according to data from the police firearms and explosives office.

It said there were another roughly 600,000 unlicensed firearms in circulation across the Philippines.

While carrying an unlicensed firearm is punishable by up to six years in prison, it remains relatively easy to acquire guns in the black market, Jimenez said.

Nicole, 7, biktima ng ligaw na bala
WALANG KUWENTANG KAMATAYAN!

The fireworks that lit up the sky on New Year's Eve have already expired, but Pinoys may still get to see a spectacle in the nighttime sky during the first week of the year.

With the weather permitting, state astronomers said "falling stars" may be seen from the Philippines from the start of the year until Jan. 7.

"The annual Quadrantid meteor shower will be active from January 1 to January 7," Pagasa administrator Nathaniel Servando said.

It peaks Jan. 3 and 4, with falling stars seen at the rate of at least 40 meteors per hour.

"Meteors from the Quadrantid meteor shower hit the Earth’s atmosphere at the rate of about 40 kilometers per second," Servando said.

This, as the Pagasa chief noted that the meteors are said to be particles from debris ejected by the near-Earth asteroid 2003 EH1.

NASA meanwhile said that the EH1 asteroid may have come from a piece of comet that broke up several hundred years ago.

Meteor shower viewing, however, may be interrupted by the waning gibbous Moon on Jan. 3, Servando said.

Aside from the Quadrantid meteor shower, Pagasa has highlighted other treats for Pinoy stargazers this January.

These include the rise of the "famous equilateral triangle after sunset."

The Triangle is composed of Betelgeuse, the prominent star of the famous constellation Orion (The Mighty Hunter); Sirius, the brightest star in the sky of the constellation Canis Major (the Big Dog); and Procyon, the brightest star of the constellation Canis Minor (the Little Dog).
