as for the hapless congressman (an unknown, until his tirade was publicized), it looks like he's getting as much as he gave.  and he's supposed to represent volunteer educators?  how can he educate well if he's a boor?  what a way to diminish the meaning of "volunteer" and "educator" with a few words.  i wonder how he treats his own wife...

Based on his pronouncements, it's quite obvious that he makes much of his being congressman...  :P

English is a crazy language with a crazy poem.
                     A youth

                       Oh thin youth
                       Sailing in the bay lot
                       Singing the bee song
                       Moving the low boat
                       A youth here
                       A youth there
                       A youth anywhere
                        How wonderful
                         Being a youth.

History / Re: Hilario Camino Moncado (1898–1956)
January 17, 2011, 09:52:07 PM
by Perry Diaz

At the Philippine Constitutional Convention in 1934, a  tall and handsome young man presented his credentials as the elected representative from the province of Cebu.  No big deal, he was just one of several hundred delegates. However, what intrigued his fellow delegates was his claim that he had power to heal the sick. To restrain the boastful pretender from making any embarrassing display of his imagined prowess, his peers appointed him as the Official Time Keeper and seated him next to a large clock.  He took his assignment seriously and attended every session.  He made sure nobody exceeded his allotted time.  His role kept him so busy that he did not even have the time to participate in the debates.

Hilario Camino Moncado was born in 1898 at the height of the Philippine Independence movement.  A gifted person, he graduated at the age of nine at the India College of Mystery and Psychics.  In 1914, when he was 15 years old, Moncado went to Hawaii and joined the growing number of Filipino migrant workers in the sugar and pineapple fields of Hawaii.  He didn't stay too long in Hawaii and moved to the US mainland in the early 1920's.  By 1925, Moncado had built a large number of followers and he organized them into the Filipino Federation of America (FFA), a mutual-aid organization.  Under the leadership of the charismatic Moncado, FFA evolved into a messianic movement.  He had followers in the Philippines, mainly in Cebu, and the US.

Niay usa ka simple nga recipe sa shakoy...

INGREDIENTS

2 cups all purpose flour
1 Tbsp rapid rise yeast
½ tsp salt
Water enough to make soft dough
1 cup oil
½ cup white sugar

PROCEDURE

1. In a bowl, mix flour, salt and yeast.
2. Add enough water and mix thoroughly to form soft dough.
3. Turn dough out onto a floured surface and knead. You need dough smooth and not sticky.
4. Place dough into bowl, cover with damp cloth. I place my dough in the oven with light on.
5. Let it rise for 1 hour or until the size is doubled.
6. Punch down dough, knead on a floured surface and form into a log.
7. Cut into pieces, 1-1/2 inches long.
8. Roll each piece into a long stick as thick as your finger.
9. Twist.
10. Place it on the baking sheet, cover with damp cloth, and let it rise for another hour.

After an Hour:

1. Heat oil in a deep pan. I used wok! If you have a fryer the better.
2. Drop shakoy one at a time.
3. Cook each side until brown.
4. Drain, and sprinkle with sugar.

History / Chandelor v Lopus
January 17, 2011, 06:25:52 PM
Chandelor v Lopus (1603) 79 ER 3 is a famous case in the common law of England. It stands for the distinction between warranties and mere affirmations and announced the rule of caveat emptor (buyer beware).

Facts

A man paid £100 for what he thought was a bezoar stone. This is a stone that forms in animals' intestinal systems, and was believed to have magical healing properties. The seller said he thought it was a bezoar stone, but he also made clear that he could not be totally certain that it was. The buyer sued for the return of the £100 purchase price.

How the claimant discovered that the bezoar did not work is not discussed in the report.

Judgment

The Exchequer Court held the buyer had no right to his money back, saying "the bare affirmation that it was a bezoar stone, without warranting it to be so, is no cause of action."

Significance

Though scepticism over the alleged magical powers of bezoars may well have justified, Chandelor long stood as an impediment to any common law development of consumer protection remedies. Only in the nineteenth century did the law begin to evolve a doctrine of implied warranty.

A recent survey conducted by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) shows that India as the most-favored destination for long-term Japanese investment. Global consulting firm KPMG reveals in a survey, that India (18%), has outscored France (14%), Russia (13%), Japan (10%) and Brazil (9%), as the preferred investment destination. Very soon, it is likely to become the world leader for investment in manufacturing. Among the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) nations, it is supposed to be the biggest gainer.

Jokes and Humor / Re: Your naughty joke for the day
January 17, 2011, 08:59:10 AM
Two farmers, Joe and Bob, lived as neighbors, but didn't like each other much. In 1989, there was a period of -30 degree centigrade cold and Bob and Joe had nothing to do because of it. So they bet a bottle of vodka who can sit out on the window ledge the longest with a bare ass.

After two hours Bob's wife came home and asked Bob, "What are you doing?"

Bob explained and she said, "Come on... you will only freeze your ass off."

Bob refused as he wanted to win the bet. Then his wife got an idea. "Let's change places when Joe is looking the other way."

Bob's wife put on the same kind of pullover and cap and traded places with Bob.

Half an hour later Joe's wife came home and asked him, "What are you doing?" Joe told her and said, "I am determined to win the bottle!"

"You are crazy. Come on in."

"Certainly not, I am already on the winning side. Bob lost his balls half an hour ago!"

Sunday, January 16, 2011

(Stephanie V. Berganio)

Philippine Provinces / Vampire in Cotabato?

Guv steps in to end vampire tale in Cotabato
Sunday, January 16, 2011

DOCTORS were examining a young man who people claimed was bitten by a vampire in Barangay Cana-an, Antipas, Cotabato province.

Cotabato Governor Emmylou Talinio Mendoza, after receiving an appeal from the victim's family, has ordered the Provincial Health Office to examine one Ramil Evangelista as allegations that he was bitten by a vampire is hard to believe.

However, according to Rico dela Peña, Evangelista's friend, the victim turns into a vampire every Friday and when the moon is full.

Dela Peña relates that each time this happens, the victim is possessed by an evil spirit, fangs appear in his mouth, his nails grow long and he exhibits extraordinary strength.

Evangelista allegedly scratched a neighbor with his long nails and the neighbor is now reportedly afflicted with the same strange illness.

Neighbors believe an old woman bit Evangelista last December 17, 2010, and turned him into a vampire. The victim reportedly started acting strange since then.

Health experts believe that the victim could have been bitten by a rabid dog or afflicted with another form of illness.

Residents in the area now fear that the victim's illness will be transmitted to them. (EF)

WASHINGTON (AFP) â€" Those first few puffs on a cigarette can within minutes cause genetic damage linked to cancer, US scientists said in a study released.

In fact, researchers said the "effect is so fast that it's equivalent to injecting the substance directly into the bloodstream," in findings described as a "stark warning" to those who smoke.

The study is the first on humans to track how substances in tobacco cause DNA damage, and appears in the peer-reviewed journal Chemical Research in Toxicology, issued by the American Chemical Society.

Using 12 volunteer smokers, scientists tracked pollutants called PAHs, or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, that are carried in tobacco smoke and can also be found in coal-burning plants and in charred barbecue food.

They followed one particular type -- phenanthrene, which is found in cigarette smoke -- through the blood and saw it form a toxic substance that is known to "trash DNA, causing mutations that can cause cancer," the study said.

"The smokers developed maximum levels of the substance in a time frame that surprised even the researchers: just 15-30 minutes after the volunteers finished smoking," the study said.

"These results are significant because PAH diol epoxides react readily with DNA, induce mutations, and are considered to be ultimate carcinogens of multiple PAH in cigarette smoke," the study said.

Lead scientist Stephen Hecht said the study is unique because it examines the effects of inhaling cigarette smoke, without interference from other sources of harm such as pollution or a poor diet.

"The results reported here should serve as a stark warning to those who are considering starting to smoke cigarettes," Hecht said.

Lung cancer kills about 3,000 people around the world each day, and 90 percent of those deaths are attributable to cigarette smoking.

The research was funded by the National Cancer Institute.

The death toll from more than two weeks of heavy rains in the central and southern Philippines has risen to 51, disaster officials said on Sunday, as authorities stepped up their search for another 16 people missing at sea.

Agriculture and infrastructure damage now exceeds 1.6 billion pesos ($36 million) after floodwaters inundated rural communities in about a third of the country's 80 provinces, said Benito Ramos, head of the government's disaster agency.

Major rice and corn production areas in the north and western parts of the country have been spared from the damaging impact of the persistent rains that began in late December.

Most of the dead either drowned or were buried by mudslides, Ramos said. Nearly 20 people are still missing.

"We're expecting the number of casualties to increase because more people have gone missing," Ramos told Reuters, appealing to fishermen in the central Bicol region to stay onshore until the weather improved.

Search planes and ships are looking for 16 fishermen whose boat capsized in rough seas off the central island of Catanduanes.

In central Cebu City, President Benigno Aquino asked Filipinos to pray for the nearly 1.5 million people affected by floods, promising government aid to feed and temporarily house more than 400,000 displaced people.

This particular gadget illustrates how important it is to conserve water. When you are using this sink to wash your hands, the fish loses its real estate if you take too much time. Yes, the water level in the fish bowl will actually go down if you are scrubbing your hands too long. In case you are wondering, there are safety features so the fish won't have all of its precious water taken away. Just to let you know, you are not using the same water that a fish is inhabiting. It's just made to appear that way. The truth is the fish water drains underneath the sink, and then will return to normal. (http://www.oddee.com/item_97209.aspx)
