Basin maparehas mos usa ka tiguwang sa lungsod sa unang panahon; nakakita ni padre nga nangihi sa kilid sa karsada arang ka shock ug niingon, "aw mangihi diay pod ning pari?!!"

Ang punto:

Maski tawag ana nila "men of the cloth" ug gipang ordinahan isip mga trabahante sa vineyard (Simbahan), mga molupyo (citizen) pod na sila sa atong society and like all of us have the right kung kinsa ang ilang botaran/suportaan/etc sa larang sa politika. The exercise of this so-called separation of Church and State has nothing to do with an individual's (ma Santo Papa o pari) responsibilty to socio-civic-political life. Mao nay ge guarantiya sa atong Constitution para sa tanan.  ;)

Sa panahon ni Cory I know of many "taong simbahan" (Church sector) nga naghilom-hilom na lang... pero sa panahon pa ni Marcos lupig pay mga irong boang ga waras-waras sa karsada. Abi nako tinuod to silang "patriots" or "makabayan." I realized then that they were just "anti-Martial Law" or "anti-Marcos." They wanted to give democracy (kuno) a chance and save the same system (protected by America) vs. the idea of a protracted war (Marxist and Maoist revolution) espoused by the NDF/leftists during that time... the then "makibaka huwag matakog" slogan of the 60's, 70's and 80's.  8) :P :-X :-X

Continuation from above...

The Church survived the Roman Empire, converted its conquerors, captured Jerusalem, beat back Islam from the Christian heartland, purged Spain of impurity, stopped the Reformation from spilling out of its Germanic birthplace, and beat the pagans wherever she took the faithâ€"in New England or in New Guinea. If Catholic charities, Catholic schools and Catholic hospitals closed down, Alvin Capino has said, the US would collapse in crisis in all three dimensions.

Yet before alcoholics who can neither hold their drink nor keep from sliding from the sofa to the floor of the Peninsula lobby, it has succumbed as though before the Caesars with whom it would be absurd to compare them. Nero had musical talent; it takes none to raise a bottle to your lips or drive a new car into a ditch.

Shame then on the Catholic Church, which abjectly apologized to crooks, as Miriam showed them to be. Rather than apologize, it should have excommunicated its detractors for traducing the Church. Had not one of its brightest lights, the Jesuit scholar Bernas, already showed there is nothing illegal or unconstitutional in faith-based initiatives like government grants to churches for secular purposes? Then would Aquino have gone on his knees and crawled to Canosa, as did Henry, to beg forgiveness of the Church he defamed.

This shame cannot be wiped away until the Church pays back the government in the same coin it was dealt at the Senate. If it doesn’t go on the attack in every pulpit in the land, then should all true Catholics turn their backs on this ridiculous, faithless and timid religion.

Christ said, “You cannot serve God and Mammon” yet these were not even Pajeros. Christ said, “What does it profit a man if he gain the whole world but lose his soul”â€"but for a 10-year-old utility van to ferry the poor from sickbed to dying bed in ill-provisioned, germ-infested, decrepit public hospitals?

Goddamn the bishops for their timidity and abjectness; Goddamn them for hesitating even a minute to return their “Pajeros”; may they all go to hell for shaming our religion. In this scandal of lies, the government knocked the crown of glory from the head of the Church; if our bishops will stoop only to bow to their traducers rather than retrieve it, then every right-thinking Catholic should pick it up from the gutter and shove it down the throat of the government.

The SWS surveys may be right that most Catholics do not care much for their religion or its basic belief in life over death and eternity over extinction. If the surveys are right but Catholicism is true in its promises and its threats (as was drilled into us in school), then that is all for the good. There will be more room in heaven for the few who believe every word of the Credo and hotter and more crowded in hell for the rest.

There is a misguided view that the Church depends for its vitality on multiplying the multitude of the faithful, on quantity over quality. Where does it say that in scripture or Church teaching? One woman kneeling in a pew whispering the rosary fills a cathedral. Christ came and died to give mankind one more chance at redemptionâ€"but only one. Salvation is for the select.

True, the faithful may turn out to be just a few but a happy few; a band of brothers and sisters. The fewer, another Catholic king said, the greater each his or her share of glory and the certainty of redemption. I often miss Mass but I know it is a sin when I fail to do so. There are no excuses. It is the privilege of a Catholic to be filled with remorse when he fails in the Faith and with rage at those who defame it.

Damn the bishops for taking it lying down

Source: http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/home/opinion/13826-damn-the-bishops-for-taking-it-lying-down

FREE FIRE by Teddy Locsin, Jr.

The issue of the bishops’ Pajeros was from the start an obvious demolition job directed at the Catholic Church so as to weaken its resistance to the birth-control bill which is immorally premised on the hope and proposition that only the select few (who can afford it) deserve to be born into the next generation.

I have elsewhere conclusively proved, in an article of Tolstoyan proportions and Kantian acuity, that the bill has only slimmest relevance to reproductive health and women’s empowerment, while Nobel laureate Amartya Sen proved that educating women better empowers them to say “no” to more children than their mates can pay to maintain.

The real and only purpose of the misleadingly labeled reproductive-health bill is to enforce artificial birth control on a rampantly randy colored race through the free distribution of expensive contraceptives (not covered by the Cheaper Medicine Act) to be sold by the giant pharmaceutical firms that are bankrolling the RH bill. There is no birth-control program anywhere in the white world.

To start with, the amount involved in the bishops’ Pajero scandal was picayune: P6 million.

To continue, the vehicles purchased by the bishops with money given by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office were not Pajeros but second- even thirdhand utility vehicles for social work. None of the vehicles could be describedâ€"as the PCSO and government spokesmen repeatedly liedâ€"as luxury or even remotely midrange.

The government’s aim in exposing the donations was to make the bishops look like crooks, the Catholic Church like a den of thieves, and Aquino like Jesus driving the moneychangers from the Temple.

Not surprisingly, the main attack made by the administration and its senatorial allies against the Catholic Church involved the separation of church and state.

The Church has argued that that principle prevents the state from imposing a birth-control program that violates a genuine Catholic conscience, which is shaped not by superficial opinion fed by a superficial press but by Catholic instruction. Some may not believe this but Catholics must. It is the same with the Iglesia ni Cristo which none dare defame because its bishops are made of sterner stuff than their Catholic counterparts.

The Aquino administration has argued that the same principle forbids the Catholic Church from asserting politically its most cherished beliefâ€"in the priceless sanctity of lifeâ€"against the secular conviction that life is only for those who can afford it and not for those who cannot.

The Aquino administration accused the Catholic Church of violating the separation of church-and-state principle, as much by accepting the PCSO’s money to purchase utility vehicles for social work, as by politically asserting its most cherished belief in the priceless sanctity of human life against the Aquino administration’s opposed view that life is only as good as its economic contribution and drops in value when supply outstrips demand. The Aquino administration believes that religious belief can only find private expression and never political actionâ€"a view that would have denied Cory Aquino the faith-based political power to liberate her people.

In this battle of beliefs (neither one nor the other has hard science to back it) between an old religion and a new secular faith, the government has fired lies, insults and paid crowds, led by a harlot and a Chinese clown in a cardboard miter with a papier-mâché Pajero around his waist. The government-sponsored Bantay Bishops rallied around the Calvary of the Senate where it was hoped that the bishops, after the scourging at the pillar of the press, would be crucified. The bishops’ accusers and their senatorial backers were crucified instead by Miriam Defensor Santiago, defensor fidei. She gave a piece of her mind to those who don’t have any.

With machine-gun staccato of alliterative and penetrating invectives, Miriam mowed down the moral pretensions of her Senate colleagues who each take home, no questions asked, P200 million a year just in salaries and allowances paid only nominally to nonexistent staff, plus hundreds of millions in kickbacks from billions in pork barrel. Miriam accused the accuser, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, of smothering the bishops in ordure to cover up its odious practices like privately placing billions in PCSO funds in private banks for a margin of the interest.

Miriam did what the pathetic bishops had failed to do for themselves, for their Church, and for her dismayed children. She defamed but with utter accuracy the defamers of the Catholic religion and exposed them as what the Church was too afraid to call them: enemies of the Catholic faith. She left the Commission on Audit in shambles for wasting the time of the Senate on constitutional issues it had no authority to raise. The COA may question whether appropriated sums were spent or stolen but not whether, after being properly accounted for, it was constitutionally dispensed as well. New minted COA Commissioner Heidi Mendoza looks more fetching in office than she did out of it. Power may be an aphrodisiac, as Henry Kissinger said, but public office will definitely give you a makeover.

But the Aquino administration, though its credibility is now shattered, did succeed in arousing Catholic contempt for the Catholic Church, especially among its stoutest defenders.

All right-thinking and right-feeling Catholics now despise the Church for allowing our religion to be insulted, traduced, shamed and dragged in the mud with no more resistance than a Jew in a ghetto in a pogrom. Christ counseled humility but not shame; forgiveness but not submission.

The history of the Catholic Church is one of proud assertion and militancy born of the conviction of its infallibility. The timidity of the Filipino Catholic Church strongly suggests that its bishops no longer believe in the truth of the Church or in its imperishability despite Christ’s promise that he had built her on unyielding rock and not on the rolling pebbles of public opinion.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP)â€"Japan has won the Women’s World Cup, stunning the United States 3-1 in a penalty shootout Sunday night after coming from behind twice in a 2-2 tie.

Shannon Boxx, Carli Lloyd and Tobin Heath all failed to convert for the Americans, who squandered dozens of chances throughout the game and blew a lead just six minutes from winning their third World Cup title.

“This is obviously going to hurt for a while,” said Abby Wambach, whose only hole in her glittering career is the World Cup title.

Japan had not beaten the Americans in their first 25 meetings, including a pair of 2-0 losses in warm-up games a month before the World Cup. But the Nadeshiko played inspired throughout the tournament, hoping their success could provide an emotional lift to their nation, still reeling from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

After being presented with the gold trophy, Japan’s players jumped up and down on the podium, then gathered behind a sign reading “Champions. World Champions.”

“Not one of the players gave up,” said coach Norio Sasaki, who inspired his players before a quarterfinal by showing them pictures of the devastation. “The penalty kicks are always a 50-50 percent chance.”

It’s been 12 years since the United States has won the World Cup, and this team was certain they were the ones to break the drought. They’d needed to beat Italy in a two-game playoff just to get into the World Cup, then lost two games in a three-month span, an uncharacteristic “bad streak” for the U.S.

After easy wins in their first two games in Germany, the Americans lost to Swedenâ€"their first loss ever in World Cup group play.

But they rallied with one of the most riveting finishes ever in a World Cup gameâ€"men’s or women’sâ€"against Brazil in the quarterfinals. Down a player for almost an hour and on the verge of making their earliest exit ever from a major tournament, Abby Wambach’s magnificent, leaping header in the 122nd minute tied the game.

The Americans beat Brazil on penalty kicks and, just like that, a nation was hooked.

Hollywood celebrities, pro athletes, even folks who don’t know a bicycle kick from a Schwinn were captivated by the U.S. women and charmed by their grit and can-do attitude that is uniquelyâ€"proudlyâ€"American. Even President Barack Obama was a fan, taking to Twitter himself on Sunday morning to wish the team well.

“Sorry I can’t be there to see you play, but I’ll be cheering you on from here. Let’s go.â€"BO.”

The White House later released a photo of Obama and his family watching the game.

But the Americans lost this game as much as Japan won it.

“Evidently, it wasn’t meant to be,” Wambach said.

They’d taken the lead in the 104th minute off a header by Wambach. Alex Morgan, who scored the first American goal, came up with a blocked cross and sent it to Wambach, who was camped in front of the goal on the 6-yard line. Standing a head tallerâ€"and then someâ€"from defenders on either side of her, she needed only to nod the ball into the net.

But Homare Sawa flicked in a corner kick in the 117th minuteâ€"earned after 36-year-old captain Christie Rampone raced to clear Yukari Kinga’s chip over Hope Solo off the line. It was the fifth goal of the tournament for Sawa, playing in her fifth World Cup.

Japan had already scored late in regulation to force extra time.

“We ran and ran,” Sawa said. “We were exhausted, but we kept running.”

The Americans got one last chance when Morgan was floored by Azusa Iwashimizu just outside the area in the 121st minute. Lloyd, Boxx and Heather O’Reilly huddled behind the ball before O’Reilly tipped it to Lloyd. But Lloyd’s shot was well wide, and Heath couldn’t make anything happen with the rebound.

After beating Brazil on penalty kicks in a quarterfinal, the Americans just didn’t have the same touch Sunday.

“You don’t; you can’t,” U.S. coach Pia Sundhage said when asked to explain it. “Sometimes in, sometimes out.”

Boxx went first, and her shot banged off Ayumi Kaihori’s right leg. After Aya Miyama made hers, wrong-footing Solo, Lloyd stepped up and sent her shot soaring over the crossbar. As the crowd gasped, Lloyd covered her mouth in dismay. Solo saved Japan’s next shot, but Kaihori made an impressive two-handed save on Heath’s shot.

Solo came up with a save, and Wambach buried hers. But Japan need to make just one more, and Saki Kumagai did.

“It’s tough to do two rounds of penalties,” Wambach said. “The keeper knows in a lot of ways where we’re going to go. She made some great saves.”

It never should have gotten that far. The Americans finished the first half with a 12-5 shot advantage but had just one attempt on target. Lauren Cheney came up short three times, Wambach shook the crossbar and Megan Rapinoe banged one off the near post.

The Americans finally broke through in the second half, with Morgan scoring her second goal of the tournament in the 69th. Rapinoe booted a pass that traveled almost half the length of the field and Morgan, who replaced the injured Lauren Cheney at halftime, beat three defenders to catch up to it. She shook Kumagai, touched the ball once with her right foot, stutter-stepped and then delivered a left-footed blast from 17 yards that Kaihori had no chance at stopping.

The Americans raced over to Morgan for a group bearhug while chants of “U-S-A! U-S-A!” echoed through the stadium.

But with just nine minutes or so before they could claim the title, the Americans gifted Japan a goal. Rachel Buehler tied to clear the ball right in front of the goal and knocked it to Ali Krieger, who botched her clearance, too. The ball fell to Miyama, who poked it in from five yards to tie it.

Ug mo ingon ang Ginoong Hesus Kristo nato, "Pag ampo, anak. Ug follow nako. Reject all that you have in this world and follow me lang. Ibuhi ang imong tanan nga possessions sa kalibotan og follow-ha ko. Ug pa tinuod jud ka, anak, maka adto jyud ka sa Langit"

Friends, what would you do? How would you react? Would you reject the Lord's answer as did the Jewish man who asked Him how to attain perfection......

Ikaw unsa man imo itubag? I'm sure (pretty much) dili jud moingon ang Ginoo, "Lorenzo, ingna si Bugsay o Hubag nga e denounce ila bahandi to gain perfection." But rather, "Lorenz, how 'bout renoucning all you have and then follow me? Sugot ka?"  ;D

The Gospel reading today has Jesus saying, "Go learn the meaning of the words 'It is mercy I desire, not sacrifice.'" For quite sometime I racked my brain on the meaning of those words "mercy" "sacrifice" etc. But then it dawned on me, maybe, just maybe, Jesus was talking about something else when He said "Go learn the meaning of the WORD" (not mercy nor sacrifice) but the meaning of the WORD as in Word made Flesh or Word who is Life... as in the ways of the WORD that dwelt among us, who says He has come not to condemn the world but to save it or that it may have life to the full... as in the ways of the Word (re: ways of love, compassion, service, etc). Or perhas, the way of the cross. Hmmm... this I wonder.  :)

Mao sad ni kinutlo sa usa ka pari from Tagbilaran sa among email group discussion:

This paragraph from the Catechism of the Catholic Church may shed some light in the discussion:

2413 Games of chance (card games, etc.) or wagers are not in themselves contrary to justice. They become morally unacceptable when they deprive someone of what is necessary to provide for his needs and those of others. The passion for gambling risks becoming an enslavement. Unfair wagers and cheating at games constitute grave matter, unless the damage inflicted is so slight that the one who suffers it cannot reasonably consider it significant.

LGU Philippines / Re: Bishops cleared
July 15, 2011, 12:53:54 AM
Received via email:

It came out in the hearing this morning that Margie Juico was told that the vehicles given were all Pajeros. I hope it was not Mitsubishi who told Margie for cheap publicity. She admitted that she did not bother to check and just lambasted the bishops for receiving SUVs.  Turned out these were pickups and other old vehicles, not Pajeros and they were indeed used to help the poor in the far flung areas where a Toyota Vios could not go. They were doing the job of the government in taking care of the country's poor. Juico apologized in the end after some tongue-lashing from some senators.  The senators asked the bishops not to return the vehicles and to continue their work but the bishops were adamant to return the vehicles kasi nasaktan talaga ang simbahan.  They are rethinking their position about working with government in helping the poor.  Some people are starting a movement to raise funds to help the bishops in their charity work, one of which is to buy vehicles so the Church to reach in far flung areas like Abra, Basilan, and many other places where Church workers have to cross streams and go over mountains to reach the poor. Let us help the poor by helping our Church help them.  Forget about government, let it do it's own work of self-destruction. Also, a move to ask for Margie Juico's resignation for her irresponsible and unkind accusations is starting. She is one government executive who is giving the Aquino Administration a bad image and a negative rating.  PNoy should fire her.

Statement of the falsely accused Bishops re PCSO donations

We have been hurt. Our Catholic Church was put in a bad light.  Our Bishops were unjustly accused and we are now fighting for JUSTICE.
The bishops were ridiculed, slandered, humiliated and embarrassed by the way Media played this up.  Commentaries from Anthony Taverna, Karen Davila, Pinky Webb, Ted Failon and others in Radio and TV- and columnists put our bishops in a very awkward position because of a LIE and false malicious accusations. Our hardworking, self sacrificing beloved dignified bishops, our Shepherds, have been labeled the "Pajero bishops". They were stripped of their dignity as HONORABLE MEN OF GOD ! They do not deserve these kind of slanderous accusations. The only way for us to accept Margie's apology is for her to submit her RESIGNATION ! There is no other way we can repair the damage she had caused the Catholic Church.

This news has reached the entire world. It damaged our Church and its hierarchy.  We love our Church. We love our bishops and many of us are hurting. The seven accused  bishops suffered so much- emotionally, and psychologically. It was outright immoral to lie about our bishops and their vehicles.   Can this nightmare happen again to our beloved Church?  How can we avoid this happening again? If she can lie about our bishops --then she can lie about other issues too. She has lost her moral ascendency to continue working for PCSO--after the spectacle she caused  !

Our President should take her out of office. He should be an objective leader who  disciplines his people when needed.  If Margie Juico is truly sorry for what she did, she should give up her lucrative position as Chairman of PCSO.
The  Church and our State should be working harmoniously together to address the social ills and the poorest of the poor of this country not just in Metro Manila but all over the Philippines-- including those far flung depressed villages in the most rugged terrain of our provinces. The bishops are not paid for all the painful work they do. They do it out of Christian love and out of advocacy. Is this the way we should treat them?  The government cannot  answer to all the needs of the poor. They are in dire need of a strong partnership with our Church to bring about social, and medical services and relief to the needy of our depressed areas !

Can anyone just ruin an institution like our Catholic Church  by these ridiculous but damaging false accusations and say sorry after they have been proven FALSE ?  There should be repercussions for these irresponsible malicious acts concocted by Chairman Margie Juico, Director Aleta Tolentino and some members of the media who mocked our bishops and made a circus out of their false accusations?  They were quick to pass judgements on our Bishops. The 200 rallyists mocking our bishops at the ground level outside of the Senate this morning diminished the position and authority of our Mother Church . The bishops were reduced to practically being called abusive looters, and corrupt men of God. Does P-Noy  tolerate his officials trashing the Catholic Church this way?  We are hurt ! We love our Catholic Faith and as Catholics, it is our moral duty to defend our Church. We should never allow our bishops to be treated this way.

Can someone please relay to His Excellency President Aquino this humble request--?  If Chairman Margie Juico does not want to resign, can you please relieve her from her post as PCSO Chairman in order to ease the pain she has caused all of us, our Shepherds, the Catholic faithful, and the rest of the Catholic Church. She is bad news for the Aquino Administration. She is vindictive and she magnifies negativity in the Aquino government.

Thank you so much. May God bless this country and our leaders, so that we will always please our God in everything we do and say !  Let us be reminded that the Catholic Church is a universal Church founded by Jesus Christ, Himself. Mocking our bishops and accusing them wrongly cause irreparable moral damages and someone has to face up to this !

With our prayers for a better Philippines ,

that's why i'm interested in how this whole soap opera will pan out.  i hope it's just the lieutenants of the president and not he himself who's initiating all these witch hunts aimed at the previous administration.  how can this administration move on?  i've always been for p-noy and what he symbolizes; i hope that he won't disappoint.

what should be questioned here is what funds were used and how legal was its use, not the recipients who had no control of the source of gifts.

kinsa may magbuot nako kun mangayo kog train ni barack obama bi?

Our Ardhdiocese (diri sa New Orleans) is one of the biggest recipients sa Federal grants/money (from the US Government) because of the charity works nga involved ang among Archdiocese, left and right jud na (Catholic Charities, Food Harvest, Home for the Senior Citzens, etc). Pero wa may kuskos balungos deri nga recipient ang simbahan sa daghang tabang sa gobyerno maski pa there is a clear separation sa Church and State sa America.  :P

Bitaw sala ba diay nang mangayog pakitabang sa gobyerno (o government agency sama sa PCSO). Kung sayop man o labag sa balaod (as per constitution) then they should have disapproved the request in the first place. But if the highest office in the land (President) has given the "go signal" aw, mag ambak=ambak jud kos kalipay.  :D

Sa una wala pay kamao mo dokdok. Karon daghan na jamo.  ;D

Kidding aside, niuban sad sa ginagmay'ng kabag-ohan (modernization and development) ang atong syudad pero dili jud sama sa kabag-ohan nga nahitabo sama sa ubang syudad sa China (which is good, I think! ;)) nga even in the mid-1980's maguwang ra gamay ang pagkabutang ikumpara sa atong mga kalungsuran. But look at them now. In terms of high rises, maski tagaan pa tag 50 years di pa jud ta moabot ana.
