According to Sotto, the perpetrators of the bus explosion could have been traced immediately had telecoms firms already required their pre-paid SIM card subscribers to register their names upon purchasing the same.

a remake of Wes' Craven  horror movie

An American family goes on a trip where they are stranded in the middle of a desert.
It just so happens to be a place where governments once tested atomic bombs, little do
they realize that this atomic zone has hidden eyes watching all over them.
Slowly the tension rises as the deadly mutants who are obviously hungry are angry with
their visitors breaching their territory leading the whole family to a horrifying conclusion.

People watch the 70-meter-wide (70-yard-wide) crop circle that appeared over the weekend in a rice field in Sleman, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Monday, Jan. 24, 2011. Thousands of curious onlookers are flocking to central Indonesia to look at the facture which looks like an intricately designed flower following rumors it was formed by a UFO.

THE Philippines experienced a worsening peace and order situation last year, a survey released by international think tank Institute for Economics and Peace showed.

Carrying a score of 2.574, the country dropped 10 notches to settle at 130th place and was included in the list of "top fallers" like Cyprus, Russia, Georgia and Syria.

"The Philippines' slide in the GPI (Global Peace Index) rankings echoes rises in the archipelago's indicators of internal conflict and crime. Several regions experienced a worsening security situation in 2009," the report said.

Specifically, the report said the number of deaths due to conflict between state troops and the Abu Sayyaf reached 163 in 2009 from 82 in the previous year. The country got 2.327 points in 2009.

The collapse of peace negotiations between the National Democratic Front (NDF) and the departing Arroyo administration in 2009 contributed to the poor ranking as well as the escalation of crime incidents.

"Violent crime is high in many districts and armed guards are routinely deployed to defend private property. Kidnap-for-ransom is also a high risk, especially among the ethnic Chinese community, which is perceived as wealthy and willing to pay a ransom to secure the release of an abducted relative," the think tank said.

Except for the reclusive Myanmar, which placed 132nd, the Philippines' security situation paled in comparison to fellow Southeast Asian nations Malaysia (22nd), Singapore (30th), Vietnam (38th), Indonesia (67th), Cambodia (111th), and Thailand (124th).

MANILA, Philippines (PNA) â€" Senate Majority Floor Leader Vicente Sotto III said on Thursday the government should now seriously consider adopting the policy requiring the registration of names of pre-paid SIM (subscriber identification module) card holders.

Sotto pressed on this matter during the Senate’s hearing on the peace and order situation in the country. He first made the proposal during the 11th and 12th Congresses -- when there were series of bombing incidents in the country and the explosive devices were reported to be triggered by mobile phones.

“It also happened in Mindanao and other areas where there were bombings and the bomb was triggered by a cell phone. Now, just to refresh the memory of our committee, this representation was chairman of the committee on public services in the 11th and 12th Congresses. During that time, I was already driving home a point to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) and I hope this time the PNP and the DILG will back me up on this issue. I, time and again, asked them to make the telecommunication companies register their pre-paid SIM card,” he said in the proceedings.

Sotto brought it up in the light of Tuesday’s bus explosion that killed five persons and injured several others. Initial reports said a mobile phone was used to trigger the improvised explosive device.

According to Sotto, the perpetrators of the bus explosion could have been traced immediately had telecoms firms already required their pre-paid SIM card subscribers to register their names upon purchasing the same.

Sotto explained that those engaged in nefarious activities, like kidnapping and carnapping, could easily dispose of the pre-paid SIM card after the commission of the crime and authorities will have no lead as to their identity.

Sotto recalled that when he first broached the idea to the NTC several years ago, some telecoms companies filed a petition before the courts which granted them a temporary restraining order (TRO). This rendered the initiative of the senator fruitless.

”The biggest clue that could probably help our police track down these criminal elements is in possession of the telecoms companies. The place, the number used and what precise time the bomb was triggered, could probably be determined if pre-paid cards are registered,” Sotto said.

“If there is an issue that we should address now, in the light of what is happening around us, it is to regulate the use of pre-paid SIM cards. This time, I hope, we can call the attention of the Palace. I think they should initiate this matter now,” the senator added.

MANILA, Philippines (PNA) â€" The Philippines was recently cited as the “country to explore” in 2011 by Ireland’s leading newspaper, The Irish Times.

The daily broadsheet based in Dublin, Ireland, said the Philippines’ pristine beaches and first-class diving sites were the main reasons the country was chosen over other well-known tourist attractions in the region.

In an article published in T.I.T’s January 8, 2011 weekend supplement entitled “What’s Hot for 2011,” writer Alanna Gallagher was all praises for two “stand-out yet accessible” tourist attractions to visit in the Philippines: the islands of Cebu; and Boracay island in Malay, Aklan.

“It (Cebu and Boracay) offers first-class diving and beaches like Thailand had 20 or 30 years ago before it was over-developed,” Gallagher’s article read.

With these distinctions, aside from many other more tourist attractions to see and experience, Gallaghar says, “the new country to explore in Asia is the Philippines.”

The Irish Times, which was established in 1859, is Ireland’s quality daily newspaper with news reports coming from throughout Ireland and from a comprehensive network of foreign correspondents, as well as sports and business coverage, features and arts sections, lifestyle, jobs and property.

Each issue contains well-informed background analysis and assessment of the events of the day, and diversity of debate in the daily opinion columns.

Alanna Gallagher is a freelance journalist who contributes to publications such as the Irish Times and Sunday Times. She has also recently started her own weekly e-zine (electronic-magazine), The Weekly Edit, which gives Alanna’s top picks in fashion, beauty, interiors, and things to do that week.

CANDABA, Philippines (AFP) â€" The number of birds flying south to important wintering grounds in the Philippines has fallen sharply this year, with experts saying the dramatic demise of wetlands and hunting are to blame.

Despite some harsh, cold weather across the Eurasian landmass, some waterbirds that usually migrate in huge flocks to the tropical islands have been completely absent, said Philippine-based Danish ornithologist Arne Jensen.

"The flyway populations of several waterbird species are in constant and dramatic decline," Jensen, who advises the Philippine government on species conservation, told AFP.

"Hence the urgent need to establish real and well-managed, hunting-free waterbird sanctuaries along the migratory flyways."

Candaba, a swamp two hours' drive north of Manila that has long been used as a pit stop by hundreds of species as they fly staggering distances between the Arctic Circle and Australia, appears emblematic of the downfall.

Jensen said that bird watchers routinely counted 100,000 ducks at Candaba in the 1980s as they stopped there for a rest while traversing the East Asian-Australasian flyway.

But volunteers recorded just 8,725 waterbirds and 41 species during the annual census last weekend, Wild Bird Club of the Philippines president Michael Lu told AFP at Candaba at the end of the count.

Northern pintails, common pochards, and green-winged teals were absent, and just one tufted duck was seen, while numbers for northern shovellers shrank and only garganeys were easily seen along with resident Philippine ducks.

Lu said the number of waterbirds counted at Candaba was down from more than 11,000 last year.

"The main threat is hunting," said Lu, amid occasional loud bangs that were apparently gunfire or firecrackers set off by local residents seeking to flush out the birds.

But Lu also pointed to the dramatic shrinkage in the size of the swamp over the past 50 years as the region was converted into farmland, mainly rice fields.

The swamp two generations ago covered 27,000 hectares (66,690 acres), but it is now just 77 hectares -- or less than one percent of its original size -- according to figures provided by Lu, Jensen and the local government.

Hunters, farmers, and watersports also threaten Paoay Lake, another wild bird habitat in the far north of the Philippines that is close to southern China.

The lake lacks surface plant life after the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos ordered the water lilies removed so he could jetski from his lakeside mansion, while a former local official used to shoot ducks there, Lu said.

Sama ani nga joke:

Recently a teacher, a garbage collector, and a lawyer wound up together at the Pearly Gates. St. Peter informed them that in order to get into Heaven, they would each have to answer one question.

St. Peter addressed the teacher and asked, "What was the name of the ship that crashed into the iceberg? They just made a movie about it."

The teacher answered quickly, "That would be the Titanic." St. Peter let him through the gate.

St. Peter turned to the garbage man and, figuring Heaven didn't really need all the odors that this guy would bring with him, decided to make the question a little harder: "How many people died on the ship?"

Fortunately for him, the trash man had just seen the movie. "1,228," he answered.

"That's right! You may enter."

St. Peter turned to the lawyer: "Name them."

History / Doctors' Trial
January 28, 2011, 03:04:23 PM
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Doctors' Trial (officially United States of America v. Karl Brandt, et al.) was the first of 12 trials for war crimes that the United States authorities held in their occupation zone in Nuremberg, Germany after the end of World War II. These trials were held before U.S. military courts, not before the International Military Tribunal, but took place in the same rooms at the Palace of Justice. The trials are collectively known as the "Subsequent Nuremberg Trials", formally the "Trials of War Criminals before the Nuremberg Military Tribunals" (NMT).

Twenty of the 23 defendants were medical doctors (Brack, Rudolf Brandt, and Sievers being Nazi officials) and all were accused of having been involved in Nazi human experimentation. Josef Mengele, one of the leading Nazi doctors, had evaded capture.

The judges in this case, heard before Military Tribunal I, were Walter B. Beals (presiding judge) from Washington, Harold L. Sebring from Florida, and Johnson T. Crawford from Oklahoma, with Victor C. Swearingen, a former special assistant to the Attorney General of the United States, as an alternate judge. The Chief of Counsel for the Prosecution was Telford Taylor and the chief prosecutor James M. McHaney. The indictment was filed on October 25, 1946; the trial lasted from December 9 that year until August 20, 1947. Of the 23 defendants, seven were acquitted and seven received death sentences; the remainder received prison sentences ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment.

The accused faced 4,000 charges, including:

1. Conspiracy to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity as described in counts 2 and 3;

2. War crimes: performing medical experiments, without the subjects' consent, on prisoners of war and civilians of occupied countries, in the course of which experiments the defendants committed murders, brutalities, cruelties, tortures, atrocities, and other inhuman acts. Also planning and performing the mass murder of prisoners of war and civilians of occupied countries, stigmatized as aged, insane, incurably ill, deformed, and so on, by gas, lethal injections, and diverse other means in nursing homes, hospitals, and asylums during the Euthanasia Program and participating in the mass murder of concentration camp inmates.

3. Crimes against humanity: committing crimes described under count 2 also on German nationals.

4. Membership in a criminal organization, the SS.

The tribunal largely dropped count 1, stating that the charge was beyond its jurisdiction.
