How to Celebrate an Anti-Valentine's Day
A Few Tips to Celebrate Valentine's Day Nontraditionally or Ignore it Altogether

Some people dislike Valentine's Day because of the implication that being part of a couple is the only way to be truly happy. Others might be part of a couple and still dislike Valentine's Day because of the implication that on this one random day of the year, we should all buy certain things for our significant other as a symbol of our love. Some couples feel that they do special little things for each other all year long and setting aside one certain day to show that you care or be romantic may seem silly or redundant. Still others resent the marketing industry's rather narrow definition of romantic love, which seems to be all tied up with non-anatomical hearts and flowers and candy and sappy little greeting card rhymes.

One option for those who do not necessarily desire to ignore Valentine's Day altogether, but who do wish to be a little less clichéd and commercial about the occasion is to celebrate an Anti-Valentine's Day instead. Exactly how to enact such a celebration is bound only by the limits of your own imagination, but here are a few ideas to get your creativity flowing.

Obama calls for political transition in Egypt

By HILARY LEILA KRIEGER
02/05/2011 07:22

WASHINGTON â€" US President Barack Obama indicated Friday that initial discussions over a transition process had begun to move forward in Egypt, as he called on Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to listen to the people and consult with his advisers about changing the current way of government.

“Going back to the old ways is not going to work. Suppression is not going to work.  Engaging in violence is not going to work,” Obama said during a press availability with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. “He [Mubarak] needs to listen to what’s being voiced by the Egyptian people and make a judgment about a pathway forward that is orderly, but that is meaningful and serious.”

Obama described Mubarak as “proud, but he’s also a patriot,” and challenged him by saying, “the key question he should be asking himself is, how do I leave a legacy behind in which Egypt is able to get through this transformative period? And my hope is, is that he will end up making the right decision.”

Obama noted that “some discussions have begun” and that the US is “consulting widely with the international community to communicate our strong belief that a successful and orderly transition much be meaningful.”

Children near Laguna Lake have low IQ, says LLDA study

September 8, 2010 6:37 am
By Francis M. Bilowan

MANILA, Sept. 7 â€"- Parents of schoolchildren living near the Laguna de Bay, better be extra watchful to your children.

A study conducted by the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) found that fish caught in the Laguna lake, particularly “tilapia,” could be contaminated with mercury and other harmful chemicals.

School principals of schools surrounding the lake confirmed that pupils living near the Laguna Lake have low intelligence quotient (IQ) and have difficulty in comprehending their lessons. School authorities blamed the intelligence deficiency of the pupils on the eating of fish caught in the lake suspected of containing mercury and other harmful chemicals.

”Mercury, a neurotic substance, has a significant effect on human intelligence,” authorities said.

The World Bank-funded study conducted in 2008, the results of which were released in 2009, also found that level of fish samples caught in Laguna Lake, is beyond the acceptable limit of 1.6 micrograms per kilo per week set by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in June 2003.

Authorities said the findings of the LLDA study should be given consideration because tilapia is like janitor fish. The urged residents around Laguna de Bay to be cautious in eating fish caught in the lake.

A similar study conducted by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), however, stated that heavy metal contents found in fish samples from the lake have passed acceptable standards.

According to the LLDA study, the highest mercury level of the edible parts of the fish samples was 5.5 micrograms per kilo per week, very much higher than the acceptable limit of 1.6 micrograms per kilo per week set by the FAO and WHO seven years ago.

LLDA officials said that a man with a body weight of 67 kilos and consuming less than 0.72 kilo of fish caught in the lake per week is taking in 3.9655 micrograms of mercury per week.

Earlier, LLDA general manager Edgardo Manda said that Laguna de Bay would die in a few years if pollution is left unchecked, pointing out that the lake has become a “septic tank” because the lake’s shoreline has been occupied by some 32,000 families, with several thousand other informal settlers inhabiting the shoreline from Pasig in Metro Manila to Siniloan in Laguna.

Why the sea is salty, Philippine version:

Why The Sea Is Salty

Many years ago, the sea tasted like ordinary rainwater. It was bland and tasteless. Fortunately, the people living in the islands knew about a friendly giant who kept mounds of salt in his cave.
The people would cross the ocean on their boats to reach the gentle giant's island, and that is how they were able to bring salt back to their villages, in order to prepare tastier meals.

One time, however, the ocean was quite rough and they could not sail out to gather salt. They eventually ran out of salt and the villagers no longer enjoyed their tasteless meals. They wondered how they could get salt again, when a child suggested they ask the giant to stretch out his legs over the ocean so that they could walk to his island instead.

The kind giant agreed, and villagers with empty salt sacks walked along the giant's leg. Unfortunately, the giant's foot landed on an anthill, and the ferocious red ants started biting the enormous leg.

"Hurry!" pleaded the giant, who strained to keep his itchy legs still.

As soon as the people reached the giant's island, he immediately withdrew his foot and scratched the itchy bites. The villages just smiled at how a giant could be bothered by tiny ants.

Anyway, the people got their salt and the giant again stretched his leg over the ocean. Immediately, the ants began biting his swollen foot. Once again, the giant asked the people to hurry up, but the heavy salt sacks slowed them down.

Besides, the people didn't believe that the tiny ants could really affect the giant, so they idly chatted away, and walked rather slowly.

Before the villagers could cross the ocean, the giant cried out and thrust his ant-bitten foot into the ocean. All the packed salt fell into the plain-water sea and melted.

The giant saved the people from drowning, but no one was able to recover the spilled salt. From that day onwards, the sea became salty.

'Tsunami' of obesity worldwide: study

by Winne Andrews â€" Thu Feb 3, 9:29 pm ET

PARIS (AFP) â€" A "tsunami of obesity" is unfurling across the world, resulting in a near-doubling of the numbers of dangerously overweight adults since 1980, doctors warned on Friday.

More than half a billion men and women -- nearly one in nine of all adults -- are clinically obese, according to research by a team from Imperial College London, Harvard and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

In 2008, the latest year for which statistics were available, nearly one woman in seven and one man in 10 were obese, it found.

Being too fat causes three million premature deaths each year from heart disease, diabetes, cancers and other disorders, according to the WHO.

The researchers described the tableau as "a population emergency."

"(It) will cost tens of millions of preventable deaths unless rapid and widespread actions are taken by governments and health-care systems worldwide," said the report, published by The Lancet.

The problem has been most prevalent in rich nations, rising most in the United States, followed by New Zealand and Australia for women, and Britain and Australia for men.

But many developing countries, especially in the Middle East and in rapidly urbanising areas, are catching up.

"These results suggest that overweight affects one-in-three adults and obesity affects one-in-nine adults -- a tsunami of obesity that will eventually affect all regions of the world," Sonia Anand and Salim Yusuf of Canada's McMaster University wrote in a commentary accompanying the study.

Global obesity rates more than doubled for men, from 4.8 percent of male adults in 1980 to 9.8 percent in 2008. For women, the corresponding jump was from 7.9 to 13.8 percent.

The standard for assessing weight is the body-mass index (BMI), in which one's weight in kilos is divided by the square of one's height in metres.

A BMI of 25 to 30 corresponds to being overweight, while above 30 is obese.
