MANILA, Philippines - Taiwan's representative to the Philippines Donald Lee is leaving for Taiwan this week as he confirmed reports that he is being recalled by his government.

Lee, however, said his recall is not permanent yet. "We will review the issue, that's why I'm going there," he said.

Lee's recall is part of a protest action initiated by Taiwan after the Philippine government handed over 14 Taiwanese nationals to Beijing, China, along with 10 Chinese nationals who are suspects in an international fraud scam involving US$20 million or 1 billion pesos

The Manila Economic Cultural Office (MECO), which is the Philippine representative office in Taiwan, fears that more than half of the 90,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Taiwan might lose their jobs over the row.

"Yun ang pinaka affected, our OFWs. Pwedeng kausapin ng Taiwan ang mga factories at pauwiin sila...hindi bababa ng kalahati, 45,000 to 50,000, posibleng mapauwi", said Amadeo Perez Jr., MECO chairman.

Philippines succumbed to China?

Meanwhile, a strongly worded statement from the Taiwan Economic Cultural Office (TECO) was released to the media.

Part of it said, "Succumbing to the pressure from the People's Republic of China, this deportation is very inhumane, unfair, and null and void to the 14 Taiwanese nationals, and it gravely impairs our trust in the Philippine government, as well as betrays the long lasting friendship between Taiwan and the Philippines."

The statement also added that, "On the premise that the Philippine government is a free democracy, which violated its own law and denied the human rights and protection to our people, how can the Philippine government expect the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to provide the deserved legal rights and protection to the 80,000 OFWs in Taiwan?"

Taiwan wants the Philippines to apologize for the deportation issue, saying "...the Philippines owes Taiwan an apology for the said unfortunate incident."

Palace stands by deportation

But Malacañang is standing by the deportation of the Taiwanese nationals to China because it was the Chinese government who presented a warrant for their arrest and the victims of the fraud were all Chinese.

Malacañang is also leaving it up to MECO to mend the issue.

“We stand by what happened. We stand by the explanation that we have already given and as to the measures that Taiwan is taking. It’s up to MECO to deal with the measures that Taiwan is taking,” said Malacañang deputy spokesperson Abigail Valte.

But MECO's Perez said it cannot apologize for the Philippine government since "we are a non-profit corporation. Taiwan wants a personal emissary of the Philippine government to apologize."

Stricter visa screening

Aside from the thousands of OFWs in Taiwan whose contracts may not be renewed because of the spat, Perez confirmed that Taiwan is now expected to strictly screen Filipino visas going to Taiwan.

"Instead of processing it for 12 days, it could take 4 months," said Perez.

Leonarda Cianciulli (November 14, 1893, Montella, Province of Avellino â€" October 15, 1970) was an Italian serial killer. Better known as the “Soap-Maker of Correggio”, she murdered three women in Correggio between 1939 and 1940, and turned their bodies into soap.

Having been born the child of a rape, she led a sad childhood with a hateful mother. She attempted suicide twice. In 1914, she married a registry office clerk, Raffaele Pansardi, and moved to Lariano in Alta Irpinia. Their home was destroyed by an earthquake in 1930, and they moved once more, this time to Correggio, where Leonarda opened a small shop and became very popular as a nice, gentle woman, a doting mother and a nice neighbor.

In 1939, Cianciulli heard that her eldest son, Giuseppe, was to join the Italian army in preparation for World War II. Giuseppe was her favorite child, and she was determined to protect him at all costs. She came to the conclusion that his safety required human sacrifices. She found her victims in three middle-aged women, all neighbors. After murdering her first victim with an axe she got rid of the body in this way (her own words):

“I threw the pieces into a pot, added seven kilos of caustic soda, which I had bought to make soap, and stirred the whole mixture until the pieces dissolved in a thick, dark mush that I poured into several buckets and emptied in a nearby septic tank. As for the blood in the basin, I waited until it had coagulated, dried it in the oven, ground it and mixed it with flour, sugar, chocolate, milk and eggs, as well as a bit of margarine, kneading all the ingredients together. I made lots of crunchy tea cakes and served them to the ladies who came to visit, though Giuseppe and I also ate them.”

Cianciulli’s second victim was killed in exactly the same manner. Her final victim, opera singer Virginia Cacioppo was killed in the same way but with one twist:

“She ended up in the pot, like the other two…her flesh was fat and white, when it had melted I added a bottle of cologne, and after a long time on the boil I was able to make some most acceptable creamy soap. I gave bars to neighbors and acquaintances. The cakes, too, were better: that woman was really sweet.”

Cianciulli was caught due to an eyewitness and found guilty of murder. She was sentenced to thirty years in jail where she died of a brain hemorrhage.

Why Reyes shot himself in heart: ‘Extreme courage’

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"Angelo Reyes’ act of taking his life by shooting himself in the chest showed “extreme courage,” and not weakness, according to a three-star general who served with him in the Armed Forces.

“Honor, to people like General Reyes, is of great[er] value than life itself, and they’re willing to give their lives to defend that honor,” retired Philippine Navy chief Mateo Mayuga told the Philippine Daily Inquirer on Tuesday night at the wake.

Mayuga said that while men generally committed suicide with a shot to the head, Reyes aimed the gun at his heart, bursting the aorta.

When people swear to tell the truth, “they swear with all their heart,” said Mayuga, a retired vice admiral. “It was an act of extreme courage, an act that a non-military mind will never understand.”

Mayuga was Reyes’ chief of staff when the latter was commanding general of the AFP Civil Relations Service from 1994 to 1995. He is now chair and chief executive officer of Glenn Defense Marine Asia Phils. Inc., a marine logistics and husbanding company.

Military mind

“Ang tapang ni Sir Angie (He was so brave). It showed his strength of character. It was a shot to the heart, not to the head, to show that he was not out of his mind when he did it,” Mayuga mused, adding:

“People like you and me will never understand it. I am just an ordinary mortal. He belonged to a different league of distinguished individuals who value honor more than life. You have to look at it from a military point of view.”
