The Manifesto of the Communist Party
Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, 1848

On the list because: it could win the award for the most malicious book ever written

This book has inspired some of the most brutal regimes in man’s history. Regardless of whether there has been a state which is a true Marxist state, this book has inspired so many evil actions that it can not be left off a list of this nature. Some of the principles found in the manifesto are the abolition of private ownership of land, confiscation of property of emigrants, heavy taxes, and the abolition of inheritance.

3 The Protocols of the Elders of Zion
Unknown

On the list because: it was a propaganda book designed to incite racial hatred

The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is a booklet that purports to describe a plot by world Jewry and Masonry to take over the world. Despite the fact that the booklet is a hoax, it was spread wide and far and believed by most Europeans to be true. Many people today still consider it be factual. It was instrumental to Hitler’s anti-Jewish efforts in Germany and it was used after the Russian Revolution to perpetrate hatred and violence against Jews. The booklet continues to be published and disseminated in many Middle Eastern states which are political enemies of Israel.

4 Baby and Childcare
Benjamin Spock, 1946

On the list because: it caused deaths through bad advice

Regardless of whether you agree with the methodology of Spock, no one can deny that many children probably died of cot death as a result of his advice to put babies to sleep on their stomachs. This advice was extremely influential on health-care providers, with nearly unanimous support through to the 1990s. Spock believed that babies on their back can choke on their own vomit â€" leading to death. Scientists eventually found that Spock’s advice actually lead to more deaths by suffocation. Estimates of the number of deaths caused by this bad advice are as many as 50,000. Spock also advocated a method of child raring that moved away from discipline based methods. Previously, experts had told parents that babies needed to learn to sleep on a regular schedule, and that picking them up and holding them whenever they cried would only teach them to cry more and not to sleep through the night. Spock taught the exact opposite.

5 Democracy and Education
John Dewey, 1916

On the list because: it convinced the world that education is not about facts

In Democracy and Education, Dewey disparages schooling that focuses on traditional character development and endowing children with hard knowledge, and encourages the teaching of thinking “skills” instead. His views have had great influence on the direction of American educationâ€"particularly in public schools. This book could be considered to be the anti-classical education manifesto. And the consequence? A generation of youths with an inferior education which lacks a founding in solid facts and knowledge. Dewey was one of the three founders of the philosophical school of Pragmatism â€" a school of thought which proposes that “truth” is made and can change. The current curriculum in New Zealand is one which would please Dewey immensely as it is largely founded on his principles.

6 The Pivot of Civilization
Margaret Sanger, 1922

On the list because: it preaches eugenics

Margaret Sanger is the mother of modern contraception and the founder of Planned Parenthood. In her 1922 book, The Pivot of Civilization, she outlined her theories of eugenics (control of the human race by selective breeding) and racial purity (3 years before Hitler did the same in Mein Kampf). The basis of her support of contraception was entirely due to her belief that inferior humans should be killed to enable a superior race to appear over time. Sanger did not just entertain popular ideas of her time â€" she was the champion of the cause. In her book she says: “the most urgent problem of to-day is how to limit and discourage the over-fertility of the mentally and physically defective.” She goes on to say: “possibly drastic and Spartan methods may be forced upon American society if it continues complacently to encourage the chance and chaotic breeding that has resulted from our stupid, cruel sentimentalism.” Birth control was, in her mind, “the greatest and most truly eugenic method.” Needless to say, Planned Parenthood today have tried very hard to distance themselves from their founder.

7 Mein Kampf
Adolf Hitler, 1925

On the list because: it helped spread Hitler’s genocidal anti-Semitism

In Mein Kampf, Hitler outlined his racist plan for a new Germany which included mass murder of Jews, and a war against France and Russia to make living space for Germans. At the time of publication the book was largely ignored, but once Hitler rose to power that changed. It is believed that over 10 million copies were in circulation in 1945. The book is largely influenced by The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind by Gustave Le Bon (1895) which suggested propaganda as a means to controlling the irrational behavior of crowds. In addition, Hitler drew on the fabricated Protocols of the Elders of Zion to give support for the need for his anti-semitic plans. Hitler speaks of “The Jewish Peril” which he believed was a conspiracy by Jews to take over the world. The book outlines the racial worldview in which people are classified by race as superior or inferior. In 2003 the sequel to Mein Kampf, Zweites Buch, was published in English for the first time. Zweites Buch (Second Book) expands on the original ideas of Mein Kampf and outlines further plans for a war with the United States and the British Empire for entire world domination by Germany.

8 The Prince
Niccolò Machiavelli, 1532

On the list because: it was the inspiration for a long list of tyrannies (Stalin had it on his nightstand)

The Prince is a treatise meant for rulers who had shed all scruples â€" to a point that they might see evil as potentially more beneficial to society than good. Machiavelli hoped to start a revolution in the hearts of his readers, and he certainly achieved that. He proudly stated things that others before him had only dared to whisper, and he whispered things that had not even been considered. According to Machiavelli “it is not necessary for a prince to have all the above-mentioned qualities [merciful, faithful, humane, honest, and religious], but it is indeed necessary to appear to have them. Nay, I dare say this, that by having them and always observing them, they are harmful; and by appearing to have them they are useful.” Some of the people inspired by this book are Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, and Napoleon I of France.

9 Coming of Age in Samoa
Margaret Mead, 1928

On the list because: it turned out to be a creation of her own sexual confusions and aspirations

Margaret Mead was an American cultural anthropologist who traveled to Samoa to answer the questions on sexuality posed in America in the 1920s (particularly with reference to women). Unfortunately for Mead, the youths she interviewed in Samoa told her wild tales of sexual promiscuity and Mead reported it all as fact. One of the girls later said: “She must have taken it seriously, but I was only joking. As you know, Samoan girls are terrific liars when it comes to joking. But Margaret accepted our trumped up stories as though they were true.” If challenged by Mead, the girls would not have hesitated to tell the truth, but Mead never questioned their stories. According to Wikipedia: “The use of cross-cultural comparison to highlight issues within Western society was highly influential, and contributed greatly to the heightened awareness of Anthropology and Ethnographic study in the USA.” Interestingly, Mead was a highly regarded academic and had a large part in the formulation of the 1979 American Book of Common Prayer (Church of England).

10 Malleus Maleficarum
Heinrich Kramer and Jacob Sprenger, 1486

On the list because: It inflamed witch hunts across Europe

Malleus Maleficarum (The Hammer of Witchraft) was a manual for witch hunters and judges to catch witches and stamp them out. It came out just prior to the protestant reformation and it was one of the most popular books amongst the reformers who were wanting to smash “evil” out of their countries. Between 1487 and 1520, twenty editions of the Malleus were published, and another sixteen editions were published between 1574 to 1669. This book single-handedly launched centuries of witch hunts.

http://listverse.com/2008/05/14/10-books-that-screwed-up-the-world/

Books are one of our greatest resources, but many times in history books have been written which are misleading or untrue. In some cases this has lead to widescale death and destruction and evil governmental regimes.

This is a list of ten of the worst books of this type â€" books that have done more harm than good. The common thread in all of these books is deception â€" invariably not intentional, but the consequences are the same regardless.

I have intentionally left off some of the more obvious choices â€" as they will almost certainly come up in the comments. This list is in no particular order.

History / Mubarak is history
February 12, 2011, 01:35:25 PM

Muhammad Hosni Sayyid Mubarak (Arabic: Ù...ØÙ...د حسني سيد Ù...بارك‎, Egyptian Arabic pronunciation: [mæˈħæmːæd ˈħosni ˈsæjːed moˈbÉ'ːɾÉ'k], Muḥammad ḤusnÄ« Sayyid Mubārak; born May 4, 1928) is the former President of Egypt. He served from 1981 to 2011.

Mubarak was appointed Vice President of Egypt in 1975, and assumed the presidency on October 14, 1981, following the assassination of President Anwar El Sadat. The length of his presidency made him Egypt's longest-serving ruler since Muhammad Ali Pasha. Before he entered politics, Mubarak was a career officer in the Egyptian Air Force, serving as its commander from 1972 to 1975.

During demonstrations beginning on January 25, 2011, protesters called for his resignation as president of Egypt. On February 1, 2011, Mubarak announced that he would not seek another term in the 2011 Egyptian presidential election. On February 5, 2011, Egyptian state media reported that senior members of the ruling National Democratic Party, including Mubarak, had resigned from leadership roles within the party.

On February 11, 2011, Vice President Omar Suleiman announced that Mubarak had resigned as President of Egypt, transferring authority to the Higher Council of the Armed Forces, following 18 days of protests challenging his thirty-year rule.

'Egypt is free': Mubarak hands control of country to military

By The Associated Press

CAIRO -- Cries of "Egypt is free" rang out and fireworks lit up the sky as hundreds of thousands danced, wept and prayed in joyful pandemonium Friday after 18 days of peaceful pro-democracy protests forced President Hosni Mubarak to surrender power to the military, ending three decades of authoritarian rule.

Ecstatic protesters in Cairo's Tahrir, or Liberation, Square hoisted soldiers onto their shoulders and families posed for pictures in front of tanks in streets flooded with people streaming out to celebrate. Strangers hugged each other, some fell to kiss the ground, and others stood stunned in disbelief.

Chants of "Hold your heads high, you're Egyptian" roared with each burst of fireworks overhead.

"I'm 21 years old and this is the first time in my life I feel free," an ebullient Abdul-Rahman Ayyash, born eight years after Mubarak came to power, said as he hugged fellow protesters in Tahrir Square.

An astonishing day in which hundreds of thousands marched on Mubarak's palaces in Cairo and Alexandria and besieged state TV was capped by the military effectively carrying out a coup at the pleas of protesters. After Mubarak's fall, the military, which pledged to shepherd reforms for greater democracy, told the nation it would announce the next steps soon. Those could include the dissolving of parliament and creation of a transitional government.

Mubarak's downfall at the hands of the biggest popular uprising in the modern history of the Arab world had stunning implications for the United States and the West, Israel, and the region, unsettling rulers across the Mideast.

The 82-year-old leader epitomized the complex trade-off the United States was locked into in the Middle East for decades: Support for autocratic leaders in return for stability, a bulwark against Islamic militants, a safeguard of economic interests with the oil-rich Gulf states and peace -- or at least an effort at peace -- with Israel.

The question for Washington now was whether that same arrangement will hold as the Arab world's most populous state makes a potentially rocky transition to democracy, with no guarantee of the results.

Andrew Phillip Cunanan (August 31, 1969 â€" July 23, 1997) was an American spree serial killer who murdered at least five people, including fashion designer Gianni Versace, during a three-month period in 1997, ending with Cunanan's suicide, at age 27. On June 12, 1997, Cunanan became the 449th fugitive to be listed by the FBI on the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list.

Forces against, for RH Bill both troubled
Saturday, February 12, 2011

CEBU CITY -- About 5,000 people joined the Catholic church-initiated rally against the Reproductive Health (RH) Bill at the Fuente Osmeña circle Friday afternoon.

They endured the heat and dust in the area as they chanted "We are, we are for life" and waved placards with messages along these lines: "RH bill source of corruption," "I choose life!" and "Katoliko ako! Supak ako sa RH bill."

But supporters of the bill in Cebu also expressed disappointment that it was not included among the priority measures of President Benigno Aquino III.

Judy Aguilar, coordinator of the Reproductive Rights Resource Group, said Aquino's "change of heart" may become a setback in the country's goal of reducing maternal deaths and child mortality by 2015.

Participants of the Fuente rally included students of Catholic schools, church organizations like the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Women's League and trans-parochial organizations from Cebu City to as far as Daanbantayan town, in northern Cebu province.

The rally, dubbed as "Cebuanos! Unite for Life!" was also attended by Representative Rachel del Mar (Cebu City, north) and her father former congressman Raul del Mar, Representative Pablo Garcia (Cebu Province, second district), Cebu Auxiliary Bishop Emilio Bataclan and Episcopal Vicar Msgr. Esteban Binghay, among others.

One of the invited speakers was Msgr. Juanito Figura, Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) secretary general, who said the Catholic Church does not have funds or a strategy to mount an anti-RH bill campaign.

"What we have are prayers, Gospel values, sincerity and commitment to human life, which are enough because this means we have God on our side," he said.

He asked why some legislators who are practicing Catholics promote the RH bill, "which is against the aspirations of the Filipino people."

"Every law of the society must be for the protection of human life," he added.

The CBCP issued a pastoral letter against the bill last January 31, where they stated that they are against the non-consideration of moral principles; anti-life, anti-natal and contraceptive mentality reflected in media and some proposed legislation; efforts to railroad the RH bill; the trajectory of the bill toward population control; and the use of public funds for contraceptives, sterilization and compulsory sex education.

Cebu Archbishop Palma, in a message delivered by Fr. Euselito Tulipas, said, "We come to manifest our faith in Jesus and our resolve not to allow ourselves to be persuaded by anyone whose principles are contrary to the teachings of Jesus Christ."

"For those who, out of honest ignorance, are supporting the RH bill, we pray to the Holy Spirit for the light of wisdom and understanding. For those who are indifferent about this issue, or are afraid to stand for the faith, or have grown cold in their faith, we pray for ardent zeal," he said.

DEAR Noy Kulas,

Cute man gud siya, bisan sa iyang height. Taas pa man kog gamay gani niya.

Nindot sab kaayo siya og lawas. Bigot kaayo, maorag Barbie doll.

Unsa man ang akong buhaton, Noy Kulas?

I am not giving you false hopes ha, but, dunay mga estudyante sa high school nga naminyo sa ilang maestra. Apan nitungha una sila og college ug nihuman.

You know these people, selling flowers, when you are sitting with your new girlfriend on the first date. And they are trying to sell you a rose, that costs max. two bucks, but they want you to pay five, because they know you are on the first date. And you can’t just say “WTF??? I’d never pay five bucks for a flower”, because your new girlfriend won’t appreciate it. It sucks. But it’s not half as bad as it is in China. In China children on the street sell flowers. And they catch your leg and won’t let it go, until you buy a flower or just give them some money. Take a look.

The Beard: A character who pretends to be another's Significant Other in order to perpetrate a deception.

The term originated in the gay community, where a Beard is a woman who pretends to be a gay man's lover to make him appear heterosexual to others. The term is used because the woman, like a beard, makes the gay man look more masculine.

OFWs begin to feel impact of PH-Taiwan row
abs-cbnNEWS.com

Posted at 02/11/2011 1:25 PM | Updated as of 02/11/2011 1:25 PM

MANILA, Philippines â€" A group of recruitment agencies accredited by Taiwan are feeling the effects caused by the diplomatic row between the Philippines and Taiwan.

According to the Pilipino Manpower Agencies Accredited to Taiwan (PILMAT), they are now experiencing stricter visa processing for OFWs bound for Taiwan.

PILMAT said the usual one-week processing now takes about four months to finish.

The group fears that if the row continues, the fate of 5,000 OFWs who are set to leave this month will be affected.

Liza Neri is among the OFWs who are supposed to leave this February for Taiwan. She is worried about her children’s education if her departure is further delayed.

“Sana huwag kaming isali, kasi kung tutuusin, wala kaming alam doon. Maaapektuhan kinabukasan ng mga anak ko,” she said.

Around 90,000 OFWs work in Taiwan.

On Thursday, Malacañang said it will not issue an apology for deporting 14 Taiwanese nationals China.

"The evidence is in China, the crime was committed in China, so it was in our best interest, in our national interest to deport them to China," said Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda. -- report from Niña Corpuz, ABS-CBN News

Ging Gang Goolie
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ging Gang Goolie or Ging Gang Gooli is a gibberish Scouting song written by Robert Baden-Powell, and is popular among the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides.

Origin

During the Second Boer War, Baden Powell listened to songs in African languages. The nonsense lyrics of Ging Gang Goolie might have been inspired by these songs. Baden-Powell is said to have written this song during the first World Scout Jamboree in 1920. Due to the fact that there were so many children from so many countries, he needed a song that made no sense in any language that they could all sing.

Legend of the Great Grey Ghost Elephant

A later story involving an African legend was invented as an explanation for the song. The story "The Great Grey Ghost Elephant" was written by Dorothy Unterschutz, a Canadian Scout Leader from Edmonton. It was published in Scouts Canada's "The Leader" magazine in 1991 (Juneâ€"July issue, Page 7). The story goes:

In the deepest darkest Africa, every year, after the rains, the "Great Grey Ghost Elephant" arose from the mists and wandered throughout the land. When it came to a village, it would either go around the village or through it. Villagers believed that if it went round the village, the village would have a prosperous year, and if it went through it, there would be drought.

The elephant had gone through the village of "Wat-Cha" three years in a row, and the situation was really bad in the village. A plan to deter the elephant from going through the village was made by Ging-Ganga, the village leader and Ha-la-shay, the medicine man. Ging-Ganga and his warriors were going to frighten the elephant by standing in its path and shaking their shields and spears. Hay-la-shay and his followers were going to cast magic spells, and frighten the elephant by the sound of shaking medicine bags. When the elephant arrived, the villagers gathered at the border of the village and started shouting the name of their leaders, "Ging-Ganga" and "Ha-lay-shay". "Shally wally" was the sound made by shaking medicine bags. The villagers were successful in their plan, and the elephant went around the village, making the "Oompah, oompah" sound. The villagers rejoiced and sang the "Ging Gang…" song.

The council yesterday approved a resolution authorizing the town’s disbursing officer to deduct the amount from the councilors’ monthly honoraria.

Councilor Concordio Mejias said they have agreed not to use the town’s fund as it usually takes a long process for the money to be released and they want the killers to be arrested immediately.

Laudable initiative...

“The Armed Forces right now is much, much better than few years back and we will pledge to perform better and be more professional,” Mabanta said adding that the military leadership fervently supports President Aquino’s “daang matuwid” (straight and honest path) campaign to professionalize their troops.

Mabanta urged both chambers of Congress to speed up its investigation of malpractices in the AFP “so that they can move on.”

He added that since the Aquino administration took over, malpractices in the AFP has stopped. “Malaki na ang ipinagbago (sa AFP) then and now,” he said.

Mabanta stressed that the AFP supports the administration’s pledge of right conduct and good governance, the promise of ‘daang matuwid’ that includes a commitment to genuine public service and transparency.

What else can they say...
