The Swan
by Mary Oliver

Did you too see it, drifting, all night, on the black river?
Did you see it in the morning, rising into the silvery air -
An armful of white blossoms,
A perfect commotion of silk and linen as it leaned
into the bondage of its wings; a snowbank, a bank of lilies,
Biting the air with its black beak?
Did you hear it, fluting and whistling
A shrill dark music - like the rain pelting the trees - like a waterfall
Knifing down the black ledges?
And did you see it, finally, just under the clouds -
A white cross Streaming across the sky, its feet
Like black leaves, its wings Like the stretching light of the river?
And did you feel it, in your heart, how it pertained to everything?
And have you too finally figured out what beauty is for?
And have you changed your life?

Oh Pompous Pustule there on my chin!
You weren't there last night
now where then have you been?

Under my skin, lying so deep!
Popping up in the night!
But why, SMACK DAB on my cheek?

Your not big enough!
Or I would pull off your HEAD!
And then little Pustule, you soon would be DEAD!

But as I see, I must wait a bit!
For your just a little white head
and not a full blown, Zit!

KALAAY

ni Temistokles Adlawan

Sa maong takna
Sa imong panan-aw ingon
Sa wala nay kaberde, pulos na lang
Laya, ang kadahonan
Nga daw wala say gana sa paglihok
Bisan itukmod
Pa sa huyohoy, maorag mga abaga nga hoyhoy;
Ang mga palwa, ang mga sanga
Pilay,
Way lami! Malimot gani ikaw
Sa pagkakasaligan sa gahom sa kinaadman
Nga imong natapok, pananglit, gikan ni Socrates
Ngadto ni Santayana; mao ikaw lakip
Sa pagkakulba-hinam, pananglit,
Sa iring-iring kon duna man . . .
Bisan wa maghasol ang imong tiyan,
Himsog ang imong mga tul-an, daghag
Sulod ang bulsa, sa maong takna,
Isog kaayo kang moingon: “Maay’ pa
Matay!” Sa maong takna,
Ang kamatayon maoray nindot sa kalibotan.

History / Woodstock
February 26, 2011, 03:18:54 PM

Woodstock Music & Art Fair (informally, Woodstock or The Woodstock Festival) was a music festival, billed as "An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music". It was held at Max Yasgur's 600-acre (2.4 km²; 240 ha, 0.94 mi²) dairy farm near the hamlet of White Lake in the town of Bethel, New York, from August 15 to August 18, 1969. Bethel, in Sullivan County, is 43 miles (69 km) southwest of the town of Woodstock, New York, in adjoining Ulster County.

During the sometimes rainy weekend, thirty-two acts performed outdoors in front of 500,000 concert-goers. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most pivotal moments in popular music history and was listed among Rolling Stone's 50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll.

The event was captured in the successful 1970 documentary movie Woodstock, an accompanying soundtrack album, and Joni Mitchell's song "Woodstock" which commemorated the event and became a major hit for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Facts and Trivia / Kampilan
February 26, 2011, 02:31:25 PM

The kampílan is a type of Moro single-edged long sword from the Philippines, widely used throughout the archipelago. In the predominantly Muslim southern Philippines, the Maguindanao and the Maranao of mainland Mindanao preferred this weapon as opposed to the Tausug of Sulu who favoured the barung.

The kampílan has a distinct profile, with the tapered blade being much broader and thinner at the point than at its base, sometimes with a protruding spikelet along the flat side of the tip and a bifurcated hilt which is believed to represent a mythical creature's open mouth.

History / Re: Admiral Yi Sun-shin
February 26, 2011, 02:16:41 PM
Japanese Admiral Tetsutaro Sato on Admiral Yi:

“Throughout history there have been few generals accomplished at the tactics of frontal attack, sudden attack, concentration and dilation. Napoleon, who mastered the art of conquering the part with the whole, can be held to have been such a general, and among admirals, two further tactical geniuses may be named: in the East, Yi Sun-sin of Korea, and in the West, Horatio Nelson of England. Undoubtedly, Yi is a supreme naval commander even on the basis of the limited literature of the Seven-Year War, and despite the fact that his bravery and brilliance are not known to the West, since he had the misfortune to be born in Joseon Dynasty. Anyone who can be compared to Yi should be better than Michiel de Ruyter from the Netherlands. Nelson is far behind Yi in terms of personal character and integrity. Yi was the inventor of the covered warship known as the turtle ship. He was a truly great commander and a master of the naval tactics of three hundred years ago.”

History / Admiral Yi Sun-shin
February 26, 2011, 01:43:15 PM
By Alain Burrese

Throughout history, there have been many great military leaders honored for their service to their countries. The great Korean commander, Admiral Yi Sun-shin, of the late sixteenth century, belongs with the best of the military leaders in any part of the world.

In 1592, Toyotomi Hideyoshi gave the order to invade Korea. His plan was to sweep through the peninsula and then conquer China. Hideyoshi's plans may have been accomplished if it weren't for the leadership of Admiral Yi of the Korean Navy. He alone was responsible for turning the tide of this important era of Asian history.

One cannot speak of Admiral Yi without mentioning the kobukson, or turtle ship that he designed. These were the first ironclad warships, and played a significant part in the war against the Japanese invaders. To illustrate the effectiveness of these ships and the brilliant tactics of Admiral Yi, we need only look at one of the many battles he won. On September 16, 1597, he led 12 turtle ships against 133 Japanese ships in the Myongnyang Straits. The Koreans sank 31 enemy ships and sent the others fleeing in this victory.

Unfortunately, Admiral Yi Sun-shin never got to see the rewards of his heroic efforts and brilliant strategy. On November 19, 1598, Admiral Yi was shot during the final battle of the war. He commanded that his body be hid by a shield so his enemies could not see that he had fallen. To his oldest son, he whispered, "Do not weep, do not announce my death. Beat the drum, blow the trumpet, wave the flag for advance. We are still fighting. Finish the enemy to the last one." He was 54 years old when he died.

Human waste attacks coral
Tuesday, 18 June, 2002, 16:05 GMT 17:05 UK

A disease which has devastated one type of Caribbean coral has been traced back to bacteria found in human faeces.

On some reefs, 95% of elkhorn corals have been wiped out by the condition, called white pox.

The finding, published in the journal the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, firmly points to sewage pollution as a potential cause.

It is thought to be the first time that a human gut bacterium has been linked to coral disease.

The problem is particularly bad in the Florida Keys, where human waste is treated in septic fields rather than extensively treated to kill bacteria.

Waste studies is a brand new academic discipline invented by Susan Signe Morrison, a dark-haired, extroverted 49-year-old professor of English at Texas State University's San Marcos campus and mother of two (her husband is also an English professor) who organized the session and admitted with good-humored candor in an email that her new field's disgust-provoking subject matter might be a "challenge" to scholars thinking about specializing in it. Morrison's own specialty as a medievalist used to be women on pilgrimages, but then she got the idea for her latest book, Excrement in the Late Middle Ages: Sacred Filth and Chaucer's Fecopoetics, forthcoming this September. In her email she explained that the idea for the fecal book came to her partly because she noticed that dung and privies played a role in the works of Chaucer, Dante, and other medieval authors, and partly because her "son was potty-training." And so a new scholarly industry was born.

The guru of waste studies seems to be David Inglis, a sociologist at the University of Aberdeen who coined the phrase "fecal habitus" and whose 2001 book, A Sociological History of Excretory Experience, argued that avoiding scatological topics in polite conversation is a repressive Western bourgeois hang-up.

Resolution Concerning Bats and Wind Energy Development:

BE IT RESOLVED on this 7th day of July, 2008 that members of the North American Symposium on Bat Research have expressed concern about fatalities of bats at utility-scale wind energy facilities in North America. Because bats have exceptionally low reproductive rates making them susceptible to population declines and local extinctions, bat fatalities at wind facilities could pose biologically significant cumulative impacts for some species of bats unless solutions are found.

Worldwide, development of wind energy is projected to increase substantially in the next decade, and installed wind energy capacity increased 27% in 2006 and 45% in 2007 in the U.S. alone. While we recognize issues concerning climate change, the long-term environmental impacts from past and continued use of fossil fuels, and the need to develop clean sources of renewable energy, the fact that large numbers of bats are being killed by wind turbines cannot be ignored. There are likely to be biologically significant cumulative impacts for some species, especially migratory tree roosting bats, unless solutions are found.

It is our collective opinion that the state of our knowledge of factors associated with bat fatalities at wind facilities is unsatisfactory and that there is a dearth of reliable information upon which to base policy and management decisions. We assert that more consistent, longer-term pre- and post-construction studies are needed to further elucidate patterns of bat fatality and to test ideas about possible solutions and efficacy of mitigation measures. We support the use of standardized protocols to improve consistency of data collection and comparability among studies. We also are concerned that the seriousness of the effect on bats has not been adequately articulated to managers, decision makers, and the public.

Based on the current state of the situation, we support:

• Multi-year monitoring and hypothesis-based research in regions and at sites with the highest potential for adverse environmental impacts on bats;

• Establishing standards for conducting site-specific, scientifically sound and consistent pre- and post-construction evaluations, using comparable methods as much as is feasible;

• Development and implementation of consistent guidelines for siting, monitoring and mitigation strategies among states, provinces, and agencies that would assist developers with compliance with relevant laws and regulations;

• Conducting experiments at wind facilities in different regions to test mitigation treatments, evaluate their effect on reducing bat fatalities, and determine the economic costs of undertaking them;

• Development of methods to assess the relationship between bat abundance and fatality risks at local and regional scales;

• Avoiding wind energy development at sites proposed by developers that are identified as high-risk by bat experts using the best science available; criteria and standards for high-risk sites will need to be established for different groups of bats and any habitats deemed to be critically important to the conservation of bats on a state, provincial, or regional basis.

• Educating the public and decision-makers regarding the full range of trade-offs and benefits regarding all forms of energy, including wind energy; impacts on bats and other wildlife must be integrated into decision-making consultations;

• Coordinating efforts to ensure transparency and data sharing among stakeholders.

Norway miduol, nagpakisayod sa kaso ni Berger

Ni Sheila C. Gravinez
Friday, February 25, 2011

Friday, February 25, 2011

Inspiration & Hope / Hold On
February 25, 2011, 09:17:48 PM
Hold on to what is good,
Even if it's a handful of earth.
Hold on to what you believe,
Even if it's a tree that stands by itself.
Hold on to what you must do,
Even if it's a long way from here.
Hold on to your life,
Even if it's easier to let go.
Hold on to my hand,
Even if someday I'll be gone away from you.
