There's must be something about karst islands that make their food products superior than elsewhere's. Sa yuta tingali na. When it comes to mangoes man gani, superior ang sa isla sa Guimaras.

Diamonds: A fighter pilot's best friend?

Diamond windows offer thermal conductivity, transparency range, strength

by Eric Bland(Discovery Channel)

The U.S. Air Force may soon be adding some serious bling to its aircraft, in the form of windows made from 80-carat diamonds.

In theory, the windows would protect jets from high-powered microwaves (HPMs) they would themselves produce. The Air Force is vague on the details, but HPM devices aboard a jet could be used to disrupt or destroy enemy electrical systems. The problem is, they could also disrupt systems on board the jet itself.

That's where the diamond comes in.

"In general, windows such as these are required to shield sensors or sources from outside environments," said William Mitchell, a physicist and project manager at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. "Diamond is special because it has a very high thermal conductivity, a very wide transparency range, and is strong. These three qualities are difficult to find in any other material."

The proposed windows would be 2.5 inches across and weight between 15 and 17.5 grams.

"Those weights correspond to between 75 and 87 carats," said Mitchell. "For comparison, the Hope Diamond in the Smithsonian is 45.5 carats."

The diamond-based aircraft windows would differ from the Hope Diamond in two big ways.

The first is that the Hope Diamond is a single crystal. The Air Force diamonds would be polycrystalline, with many very tiny diamonds put together. As long as the individual diamonds that make up the larger diamond are much smaller than the wavelength of light shining through them, the diamond's superior optical qualities are maintained, said Mitchell.

The second big difference is how the diamonds are formed.

Instead of crushing a chunk of carbon over millions of years deep in the Earth, the diamond windows will be created in several weeks by spraying carbon atoms over a silicon substrate in a high-pressure chamber, a process known as chemical vapor deposition.

Companies like Apollo Diamond and Gemesis specialize in creating the synthetic diamonds that the Air Force is interested in. Apollo Diamond CEO Patrick Doering said his company plans to submit an invited proposal to the Air Force for the project.

"The critical thing is that you don't want a lot of absorption [of high-powered microwaves]," said Doering. "What can happen is that if a material absorbs too much heat its properties can change, it might absorb more heat, and then you get this runaway situation."

Within seconds, a cloudier material like glass would melt or shatter from the microwaves passing through it.

Combine diamond's optical and thermal properties with its physical strength, more than enough to withstand bird strikes and other physical stresses encountered during flight, and you have a material uniquely suited for a new weapon capable of destroying unshielded electrical systems.

When high-powered microwaves encounter an electrical system, they cause a short-lived but overwhelming power surge.

An electrical system struck by an HPM, or its better-known cousin, the electromagnetic pulse, simply stops working. There is no explosion or sound. Incoming missiles or other aircraft that encounter HPMs, in theory, would just drop out of the sky.

Mitchell says that it typically takes about 10 years for new materials or technology to make it into commercial or military devices, so diamond-encrusted aircraft won't be flying over battlefields anytime soon.

Fashion Trend / Brainy Guy, Better Sperm?

Brainy guy, better sperm? Take that, tough guy!

By Brian Alexander

It may seem counterintuitive to those males among us who spent more time in high school reading Dickens or studying calculus than we did making out with Stephanie the cheerleader, but a group of researchers has issued a study finding that higher IQ men have better sperm.

Take that, Mr. Quarterback.

But before the pocket protector set starts strutting in their Radiohead T-shirts, hang on a minute. As interesting and possibly important to a certain subgroup of scientists as the study may be, it says much more about our obsession with grading our masculinity than it does about brains and sperm.

The point of the study was to test a theory about “fitness factor,” explained lead author Rosalind Arden of King’s College, London. Fitness factor, according to the researchers, involves the clues, such as waist-to-hip ratios, that signal we have good genes in general and will produce tip-top babies.
Image: Body Odd

“I chose to analyze the relationship between sperm and intelligence because I thought that if we were serious about the fitness factor idea, then even two [apparently] unrelated traits might be correlated,” she said. In other words, they didn’t set out to prove that smart men have better sperm.

“The bigger idea of the fitness factor,” Arden explained, “is that beauty, health, intelligence, personality - may all exist in a giant web - traced out by the spider of evolutionary fitness.” In other words, one gene or big set of genes that may bestow some fitness traits, like body symmetry, may also confer less obvious ones, like good sperm.

Conveniently for the researchers, in 1985 the U.S. government conducted something called the Vietnam Experience Study, in which war veterans underwent a battery of tests, including intelligence and various physiological measures. Some of the men supplied semen samples. Arden and colleagues examined the data to correlate IQ with semen. It turned out that there was a small link between higher IQ and better semen.

So, smarter guys tend to have higher quality sperm, they found. But the reality is, there is no intellectual push-up a man can do to give himself betterâ€" that is, more fit or more aggressive sperm.

“If you’re going to be a Go Master,” Arden said, making a pun of a movie about a genius of the Chinese board game, “do it for the love of the stones - not to improve your sperm quality.”

We’d make our sperm happier just by wearing boxers rather than tighty whities and letting those boys breathe.

While the researchers judged quality based on number, density and swimming ability, sperm experts â€" also known as andrologists â€" consider other factors to be equally important to fertility, like how the sperm interacts with an egg. The shape, structure and health of the sperm are also important. A normal sperm has a long tail and an oval-shaped head that whips it forward to the egg.

To get healthy sperm, it's recommend that men take a daily multivitamin with selenium, zinc and folic acid, nutrients that are important for sperm function, according to the Mayo Clinic. Guys should also exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight. Smoking tobacco, pot or drinking too much alcohol can wreak havoc on sperm. Same for stress and steroids.

So, practically speaking, while possibly important to science, the study doesn’t mean much for the average guy. It is, Arden said, “akin to one tiny piece in one of those god-awful humungous jigsaws given by well-meaning aunts as 'improving' Christmas gifts to small boys.”

But the study did reveal a lot about human psychology. To read some of the breathless press coverage, it was a eugenicist’s dream come true. “There are few better ways of upsetting a certain sort of politically correct person than to suggest that intelligence (or, rather, the variation in intelligence between individuals) is under genetic control,” The Economist gleefully noted.

Yet cause-and-effect is not nearly so clear cut. Genes do influence intelligence and a number of studies have linked higher intelligence with better health, according to Douglas Detterman, a professor of psychology at Case Western Reserve University and editor of the journal Intelligence, in which Arden’s paper appeared. For example, higher IQ men have been shown to have less risk of dying of coronary heart disease. Such findings have spawned a new field called “cognitive epidemiology.” But nobody knows why it occurs.

“There is a lot of speculation,” said Detterman. “It could be that people with lower IQs receive inadequate treatment. Perhaps they require more instruction on how to follow doctors’ orders.”

It might also be that people with lower IQs aren’t inherently less fit; they just make less money and cannot afford top quality care. “Disentangling all these factors is complicated,” he said.

So it looks like smart boys are going to have to stick with bait like Shakespeare’s sonnets and Ferraris bought with proceeds from inventing high-tech gadgets to attract the women with whom we’d like to share those sperm.

Green tea, mushrooms lower breast cancer risk

Study aims to uncover why rate of the disease is lower in Chinese women

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Women who get plenty of mushrooms and green tea in their diets may have a lower risk of developing breast cancer, new study findings suggest.

The study, of more than 2,000 Chinese women, found that the more fresh and dried mushrooms the women ate, the lower was their breast cancer risk.

The risk was lower still among those who also drank green tea every day.
Story continues below â†"advertisement | your ad here

It's known that the rate of breast cancer in China is four- to five- times lower than rates typically seen in developed countries â€" though the rate has been climbing over the past few decades in the most affluent parts of China.

The current findings suggest that traditional diets â€" and specifically, large quantities of mushrooms and green tea â€" may help explain China's lower breast cancer incidence, according to lead researcher Dr. Min Zhang, of the University of Western Australia in Perth.

She and her colleagues report the findings in the International Journal of Cancer.

The study was conducted in southeast China and involved 1,009 breast cancer patients between the ages of 20 and 87, and an equal number of healthy women the same age. All completed a detailed dietary questionnaire that asked them how often they ate specific foods.

Overall, Zhang's team found, women who ate the most fresh mushrooms  â€" 10 grams or more per day â€" were about two thirds less likely to develop breast cancer than non-consumers of mushrooms. Meanwhile, women who ate 4 grams or more of dried mushrooms per day had half the cancer risk of non-consumers.

Finally, mushroom eaters who also drank green tea everyday had only 11 to 18 percent of the breast cancer risk of women who consumed neither.

The study does not prove cause-and-effect, the researchers point out.

They did account for several kinds of risk factors for breast cancer â€" such as the women's weight, education level, and exercise frequency and smoking habits â€" but there could be other factors that explain the findings.

This is also the first study linking high dietary amounts of mushrooms and green tea to lower breast cancer risk, Zhang told Reuters Health.

Therefore, she said, it's too early for women to assume that the foods will help them avoid the cancer.

Still, it is biologically plausible, the researchers point out.

Lab research has shown that mushroom extracts have anti-tumor properties and, in animals, can stimulate the immune system's cancer defenses. For its part, green tea contains antioxidant compounds called polyphenols that have been shown to fight breast tumors in animals.

Women Can Smell A Man's Intentions

When a guy is aroused, his sweat activates the female brain, study reveal

By Melinda Wenner

It's not hard to tell when a guy is "happy to see you."

The twinkle in his eye, his swagger, that sexy smile â€" all are clear signs he's in the mood.

And, at least subconsciously, a woman can also tell by the scent of his sweat, according to new research.

Scientists have long debated whether humans, like animals, use chemical signals called pheromones to communicate sexual interest to potential mates. Problem is, the effects of pheromones are thought to be subconscious â€" meaning that if we do communicate using them, we sure don't know it.  It's also hard to know what these pheromones might be and how we sense them, so researchers understand little about them.

But if human pheromones are going to be anywhere, they're going to be in sweat, right? Denise Chen, a psychologist at Rice University in Houston, and her colleagues devised an experiment to compare how women respond to different forms of male sweat â€" sweat produced in everyday situations versus that produced when a man is turned on.

The researchers speculated that if humans do produce and respond to sweat pheromones, then a woman should respond to a guy's sexual sweat differently than she does to his normal sweat.

Chen and her colleagues asked 20 heterosexual guys to stop wearing deodorant and scented products for a few days. Then they told the men to put small pads in their armpits as they watched pornographic videos and became aroused (the researchers confirmed, using electrodes, that the images did the job). Later, the guys were asked to exchange those pads for fresh pads to collect the sweat they produced when they weren't aroused.

Then the researchers recruited 19 brave women to smell the men's pads while undergoing brain scans.

The investigators used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), a technique that reveals the brain regions a person is using at any given time â€" even if their brain activity is subconscious.

Sure enough, the women's brains responded very differently depending on which sweat they sniffed. (And no, none of them passed out.) The sexual sweat, but not the normal sweat, activated the right orbitofrontal cortex and the right fusiform cortex, brain areas that help us recognize emotions and perceive things, respectively. Both regions are in the right hemisphere, which is generally involved in smell, social response, and emotion.

The findings bolster the idea that humans do communicate via subconscious chemical signals, notes Chen in her study, which was published in the Dec. 31 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience.

Our sexual intentions, in other words, may be a lot clearer than we ever intended them to be. That crush you have on your co-worker? She may already know â€" at least subconsciously.

Allergy Planet

Monday March 16, 2009 at 10 pm ET/PT (CBC)

In Britain and America cases of asthma, eczema and hay fever have trebled in the last three decades and food allergies, virtually unheard of in the past, have increased by over 500%. Are we becoming allergic to the 21st Century?

Historically allergies barely registered on the health agenda, but today with 1.2 billion allergy sufferers around the world, it is a phenomenon that is impossible to ignore. Not only are the number of allergy sufferers increasing year on year, but the allergies doctors are treating are getting more severe. The western world is in the grips of a growing epidemic...(this) is a terrifying phenomenon..

This is a truly global...allergies are influenced by our genes; ....a potential damage caused by the environment in which we live; (but, it may) be all in the mind.

(Is there any) truth in the famous 'hygiene hypothesis', which posits that the eradication of sickness and disease may be responsible. (many suggest) that the way we treat our skin barrier may be more important than we ever realised, and discovers the protective effect of the unique microbial ecosystem that lives on us and in us.

...Have we have created a world mismatched to our biology, and are allergies the price we have to pay for the privileged lifestyle we have chosen? (excerpts. parenthesis mine)

a family member of mine got seriously ill years ago. it was heartbreaking for me because that was the first time i witnessed the person very sick. i suffered to have watched my family devastated by the  prevailing situation. we knew there weren't any chance for the person to get better. it was time for me to let go and let God.

during those trying moments in our family, the show of support from people, both known and unknown to me, were incredible and touching. i'd never felt that much blessing in my life in spite of the suffering my family and i had gone through. God was there. and it was more spiritually uplifting to me than being lost. a suffering had brought life and deepened faith in me and my family, and dicovered the blessing of love and friendship.

Thanks Grazie, but there are also people who are bitter with the success of others.  However, one can't evade of  realities that there are people who are meticulous of how others bring inspiration and not happy to recognize especially when their own do not merit the same.

There would be no drama in life if there are no villains; but the good will always prevail.
