March 07, 2011, 08:45:25 PM
Teamwork is defined in Webster's New World Dictionary as "a joint action by a group of people, in which each person subordinates his or her individual interests and opinions to the unity and efficiency of the group." This does not mean that the individual is no longer important; however, it does mean that effective and efficient teamwork goes beyond individual accomplishments. The most effective teamwork is produced when all the individuals involved harmonize their contributions and work towards a common goal.

Aside from gypsies and the Shinto religion, most other religions, including the Roman Catholic Church support organ donation. “However, for families of Jehovah’s Witnesses, they require that organs be drained of any blood due to their interpretation of the Hebrew Bible/Christian Old Testament as prohibiting blood transfusion, Muslims meanwhile require that the donor provided written consent in advance,” she adds.

In the absence of deceased organ donors, most patients turn to living related or non-related donors as a possible source. However, in the past decade, people have discovered that they can make money out of selling their organs. Most of them are Living Non-Related organ donors who were paid around P90,000 to P150,000 or more for a single kidney.

This has fueled a big controversy in the media and the organ transplant industry. Transplant professionals such as Dr. San Diego, has been working very hard to underscore a very crucial fact: human organs are not for sale.

“All living donors need to be aware that there is no monetary reward involved when they decide to donate their organs. Otherwise, this will be considered as organ trafficking,” explains Dr. San Diego.

With the issuance of Administrative Order 124 in 2002, kidney sale has been prohibited by the Department of Health that regulates kidney transplants from living non-related donors.

Once found guilty on organ trafficking, a person may be imprisoned for as long as 20 years and be imposed of penalty of not more than P2 million.

Transplant candidates without living and related donors can register in the Transplant Waiting List of Transplant Centers for organs that will come from deceased donors.

Human organs should never be bought or sold. The act of giving away of one’s organs should be a donation solely based on altruism or giving without condition.

On the other hand, it is the responsibility of the organ recipients to pay for the medical check-up of the potential donor for living donors. These expenses include hospital stay during donation and post-operative medical check-ups. The Hospital Ethics Committee then investigates the possibility of commercialism and/or absence of altruism.

According to Grace of HOPE, families of deceased donors do not receive any monetary compensation. At most, the families of patients offer funeral assistance to them. More than money, improved awareness about the program is the key to make people welcome it.

Dr. Liquete recommends that organ donation and transplantation should be introduced early in school and promoted through tri-media. “It needs a joint effort by the Department of Health and NGOs to promote this program. There should be enough funding to do this.”

Other TCs and doctors also believe that they can get better response from families who are more aware of this option. “I have learned that the higher the educational attainment of people I talk to, the easier it is to discuss with them the idea of organ donation. Hence, it is very important that each and everyone in our country is not deprived of education, “Dr. San Diego shares.

After battling intense circumstances, fulfillment comes when they meet the recipients who can now see with new eyes or stride with a new heart, lungs, or a kidney. They are “Angels of Death” no more, but unsung heroes of those blessed with a second life.

“I’ve learned to appreciate life… even the small things around me. To be thankful for all the blessings and merely for life itself... knowing that you have helped people desperate to live a normal life,” admits Czarina.

Grace adds, “As we always say in every advocacy campaign, “Don’t take your organs to heaven. Heaven knows we need them here!” So go recycle yourself, be an organ donor.

Organs that are most needed here in the Philippines are kidneys, liver, and cornea. Anyone can be an organ donor at the time of one’s death, and they can signify their intention of becoming one by signing an organ donor card which can be obtained from the four OPOs mentioned: LifeShare (Medical City), IPOD (Capitol Medical Center), HOTTProg (St. Luke’s Medical Center) or HOPE (National Kidney and Transplant Institute).

It is also important to inform relatives about their decision. Living organ donors should undergo a complete medical screening to determine if they are eligible to donate their organ. Once they pass, they will be evaluated by an ethics committee of the hospital where the transplantation will be done. •

For further inquiries or possible referrals, you can contact these OPOs through their coordinators: Grace (HOPE): 0917-5544545; Czarina (IPOD): 4164763 / 0917-8934763; Dr. Rica San Diego (LifeShare): 470-4411; Consultation is every Mon/Wed 10 a.m.-1 p.m.; Don (HOTTProg): 0922-8372446.

IN the world of organ retrievals, they are called dark angels.

On call 24/7, the work of transplant coordinators (TCs) has long been associated with cadavers, human organs, and of course, death. Their job is crucial in the harvest of healthy organs from deceased donors for patients waiting for a new heart, kidney, a liver: a second life.

One potential multi-organ donor or PMOD can save at least seven lives. And that may be the greatest miracle wrought by the donors’ families who have said yes to giving the ultimate gift of life.

People involved in the Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) say the most challenging part is convincing the grieving family of brain dead patients to give away their organs without any condition. It is a job solely assigned to a transplant coordinator â€" a task they stress is as crucial as the transplant operation itself.

A few moments after the patient has been officially declared brain dead, the TCs come in. Says Grace Suguitan, supervising transplant coordinator of HOPE or Human Organ Preservation Effort of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute: “We do understand that it is not easy for the family members to give their consent, especially when the possible deceased donor is a minor or is at the prime of his or her life at the time of the fatal accident.”

She has come to expect, and has actually encountered families who became angry or agitated during the process of getting their consent.

“Because death can come unexpectedly, TCs execute difficult steps under great time constraint and intensely emotional circumstances,” describes Don Mejia, a transplant coordinator under HOTTProg or the Human Organ and Tissues for Transplantation Program Network based at the St. Luke’s Medical Center.

Still, Don and Grace believe that it is important for all family members of the brain dead donor to understand the aspects of organ donation to make the right decision.

A fact we all need to know is that once the patient has been certified to be brain dead, it means that the brain has ceased to function, but not necessarily the other vital organs. The patient is also considered legally dead.

“It’s kind of difficult to explain to the relatives that the patient is already gone, particularly when they can still see traces and movement in the cardiac monitor,” says Czarina Sanchez-Bayani, a transplant coordinator from IPOD or Integrated Program on Organ Donation (IPOD) based at the Capitol Medical Center.

“It takes hours just obtaining the consent because we give them time to grieve and be with their loved one,” she adds.

According to Dr. Rosemarie Liquete, transplant surgeon and chief of the HOTTProg Network, it is very important that the patient still has stable vital signs to maintain organ function. This is critical in screening the organs in preparation for the retrieval surgery.

Thus, timing is very crucial. According to Dr. Liquete, “Organ retrieval should be done at the right time, the right place, and with the right people.”

Aside from being frontliners in securing donor consent, transplant coordinators are key in coordinating the team of surgeons, doctors, nurses, and a network of hospitals for a successful retrieval.

“We are on-call 24/7, so we must always be on our toes. We cannot afford to lose even a single referral,” says Czarina who, with the rest of transplant coordinators from these OPOs respond to referrals all over the country.

They even provide psychological support for the grieving families, adds Dr. Liquete. “TCs help lessen the impact of the loss of loved ones by offering them an opportunity to give the gift of life to others,” shares Dr. Rica San Diego, a Transplant Procurement Manager of the LifeShare program in Medical City.

But as in any other job, there’s not always a happy ending. There are families of donors who turn down the opportunity of donating their kins’ organs due to cultural belief, family influence, and lack of awareness. Sometimes, the organ itself becomes unsuitable due to various circumstances.

“We do feel bad when a kidney [or any organ] goes to waste, because we always exert effort whenever we have a deceased donor referral,” says Grace. She explains that a donor is properly evaluated before he is considered to be eligible. Usually, those with hepatitis, elevated creatinine levels and/or those with sepsis are medically unsuitable.

Likewise, Don feels disappointed when the organs are not medically suitable. “Much more if the relative of the patient did not consent for organ donation. However, we have to respect their decisions and their beliefs about deceased organ donation.”

This can be doubly disheartening for the expectant recipient who has spent years waiting for a new lease on life.

“Many Filipinos are still not amenable to donating the organs of their loved ones due to the cultural belief that it is not good or acceptable when a body is not complete when buried,” shares Dr. San Diego.

PH gov’t to convince thousands of OFWs still in Libya to leave
By Jerry E. Esplanada Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 18:10:00 03/07/2011

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"Due to the unstable situation in Libya, six Philippine government teams currently deployed there will try their best in convincing the 13,000-plus remaining Filipino migrant workers to immediately leave the conflict-torn north African country.

Foreign Undersecretary Rafael Seguis on Monday told a press briefing "there's a need for them to leave" Libya.

He said it was "very dangerous" to stay in Tripoli and some areas outside the Libyan capital.

Seguis said the DFA has raised its alert level from No. 3, or voluntary repatriation, to No. 4, which is strongly urging people to leave a particular troubled country.

"We can't force people to get out of Libya, but we're trying to convince them to leave," he said.

Seguis disclosed that "this week and up to Saturday, we will be on mop-up operations."

"We will get Filipinos in other areas [aside from Tripoli, Benghazi, Misurata and Brega, among others] who wish to be repatriated home to the Philippines," he said.

DFA Assistant Secretary J. Eduardo Malaya said in a text message to the Philippine Daily Inquirer that "both [the DFA and the Department of Labor and Employment] will be conducting mop-up operations for another week for the remaining Filipinos in other areas [in Libya]."

If necessary, the government would arrange a third rescue mission using the Philippine-chartered Greek ship MV Ionian Queen to evacuate more Filipinos from Libya, according to Seguis.

"It depends on our mopping-up operations ... It's practical to fetch [Filipino evacuees] by ship," he said.

So far, the Cyprus-flagged vesselâ€"which has total capacity of 1,720 passengersâ€"has fetched some 1,800 Filipinos from the eastern coastal city of Benghazi and Tripoli.

At least 185 Filipinos from the vessel's first mission are still in Crete awaiting connecting flights to Manila.

As of Monday afternoon, 4,222 of the nearly 12,000 Filipinos who had fled Libya have returned to the country, according to Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz, who joined Seguis and two other government officials during the press conference.

"So far, we have given 2,523 qualified [OFW] beneficiaries their one-time financial assistance of P10,000," said Baldoz.

Returning overseas Filipino workers are "being processed at our processing center at the Philippine Trade Training Center ... We continue to attend to the needs of our workers," she also said.

Overseas Workers Welfare Administration head Carmelita Dimzon and Philippine Overseas Employment Administration chief Carlos Cao also showed up during the news conference.

For her part, Dimzon denied reports that one of the government repatriation teams in Libya was having funding problems.

"We have not received any complaints from our people in the field," she said.

On Monday, some 400 Filipinosâ€"on board regular flights of Qatar Airways, Gulf Air, Cathay Pacific, Etihad, and Saudi Arabian Airlinesâ€"were expected to arrive at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, according to the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.

Family & Parenting / The Unicorn in the Garden
March 07, 2011, 07:07:13 PM
by James Thurber

Once upon a sunny morning a man who sat in a breakfast nook looked up from his scrambled eggs to see a white unicorn with a golden horn quietly cropping the roses in the garden. The man went up to the bedroom where his wife was still asleep and woke her. "There's a unicorn in the garden," he said. "Eating roses." She opened one unfriendly eye and looked at him.

"The unicorn is a mythical beast," she said, and turned her back on him. The man walked slowly downstairs and out into the garden. The unicorn was still there; now he was browsing among the tulips. "Here, unicorn," said the man, and he pulled up a lily and gave it to him. The unicorn ate it gravely. With a high heart, because there was a unicorn in his garden, the man went upstairs and roused his wife again. "The unicorn," he said,"ate a lily." His wife sat up in bed and looked at him coldly. "You are a booby," she said, "and I am going to have you put in the booby-hatch."

The man, who had never liked the words "booby" and "booby-hatch," and who liked them even less on a shining morning when there was a unicorn in the garden, thought for a moment. "We'll see about that," he said. He walked over to the door. "He has a golden horn in the middle of his forehead," he told her. Then he went back to the garden to watch the unicorn; but the unicorn had gone away. The man sat down among the roses and went to sleep.

As soon as the husband had gone out of the house, the wife got up and dressed as fast as she could. She was very excited and there was a gloat in her eye. She telephoned the police and she telephoned a psychiatrist; she told them to hurry to her house and bring a strait-jacket. When the police and the psychiatrist arrived they sat down in chairs and looked at her, with great interest.

"My husband," she said, "saw a unicorn this morning." The police looked at the psychiatrist and the psychiatrist looked at the police. "He told me it ate a lilly," she said. The psychiatrist looked at the police and the police looked at the psychiatrist. "He told me it had a golden horn in the middle of its forehead," she said. At a solemn signal from the psychiatrist, the police leaped from their chairs and seized the wife. They had a hard time subduing her, for she put up a terrific struggle, but they finally subdued her. Just as they got her into the strait-jacket, the husband came back into the house.

"Did you tell your wife you saw a unicorn?" asked the police. "Of course not," said the husband. "The unicorn is a mythical beast." "That's all I wanted to know," said the psychiatrist. "Take her away. I'm sorry, sir, but your wife is as crazy as a jaybird."

So they took her away, cursing and screaming, and shut her up in an institution. The husband lived happily ever after.

Science and Research / Re: Schizophrenia
March 07, 2011, 02:30:52 PM
There are various types of Schizophrenia, but Paranoid Schizophrenia is the most common. The patient has delusions that people are deliberately trying to persecute her, she may well consider herself of exalted birth, or maybe that she's been sent on a special mission by the Government, although she's not always sure what that mission might be.

Jealousy is another unpleasant symptom, together with hearing voices that are either of a threatening tone, or which threaten her directly. Sometimes she smells and tastes things which aren't real.

The onset of this disease is usually between the ages of 15 and 35, and while there's no cure, it can be controlled by conventional medications such as Thorazine, Prolixin, Haldol and Stelazine. These drugs became available in the 1950s.

In the last decade, more advanced medications appeared, such as Abilify, Zyprexa, Seroquel and Geodon. However, doctors recommend that if you've been placed on a course of the older drugs, you should stick to them and not try to change.

A "Conversation" between Prof. F. A. Gerges
and J. Michael Mahoney

Gerges

How do you explain the fact that other researchers have not examined the subject of the bearded lady?

Mahoney

Frankly, it is amazing to me that schizophrenia has not been generally and decisively linked to the bearded lady syndrome, except in isolated cases. A handful of investigators, notably Dr. Edward J. Kempf (see quotation 001 herein) has certainly made note of this phenomenon in mental illness, but the writings of others on the subject have not been extensive enough to make an indelible impression on the general public, nor, for that matter, even on the psychiatric profession. Theories are a dime-a-dozen, so to speak, and one has to gather an overwhelming amount of evidence to convince people of a theory's correctness, which so far no one else has done in this particular case. Darwin's theory of evolution could have been stated quite simply in a few pages, yet, after developing his theory, he had to spend the remainder of his life documenting it extensively in such books as On the Origin of Species and The Descent of Man.

The bearded lady syndrome in mental illness has been observed by many, yet no one has really been able to distinguish the forest from the trees; that is, the general applicability of the theory to all cases of mental illness and not just the few being observed at any one moment.

My favorite quotation (from Otto Fenichel's The Psychoanalytic Theory of Neurosis) I think explains this investigative blindness: "And the hero who solves every riddle must have been wise not so much because of his intelligence, but because his emotional freedom, unhindered by repression, enabled him to recognize the hidden truth." Unfortunately, many investigators are still hindered by their own repressions, varying both in strength and depth. These repressions can be the result of both religious and personal problems which have never been satisfactorily resolved. The purpose of Freud's Psycho-Analysis is to resolve and dissipate these repressions, but how many people have been psycho-analyzed? If an investigator has issues with his own bearded-lady self, which he (or she) has never satisfactorily come to terms with, the ambivalence caused by this repression will make it much more difficult to recognize this conflict in others.

Charles Darwin, in his autobiography edited by his granddaughter, Nora Barlow, put it another way. He was explaining how easy it is to ignore phenomena, even though they are plainly visible, if you do not know what you are looking for. "On this tour," he wrote, "I had a striking instance how easy it is to overlook phenomena, however conspicuous, before they are observed by anyone. We spent many hours in Cwm Idwal, examining all the rocks with extreme care, as Sedgwick was anxious to find fossils in them; but neither of us saw a trace of the wonderful glacial phenomena all around us; we did not notice the plainly scored rocks, the perched boulders, the lateral and terminal moraines. Yet these phenomena are so conspicuous that, as I declared in a paper published many years afterwards in the Philosophical Magazine, a house burnt down by fire did not tell its story more plainly than did this valley. If it had been filled by a glacier, the phenomena would have been less distinct than they are now."

The same holds true for the bearded lady syndrome. Its phenomena are so obvious in every case of mental illness/schizophrenia, if one knows what to look for, that, as Darwin so strikingly put it, "a house burnt down by fire did not tell its story more plainly than did this valley."

Nowadays, of course, academic psychiatry is preaching a so-called bio-chemical theory of schizophrenia, namely, that the disease is caused by certain chemical imbalances in the brain and that the cure lies in somehow correcting these imbalances through drugs and other physiological treatments. The drugs in use today, however, are merely band-aids covering the basic pathogen, i.e., the severe bisexual conflict of the bearded lady syndrome. Drugs can be useful in certain cases to stabilize the patient to the extent that he or she can begin psychotherapy. If psychotherapy is not undertaken then the drugs truly remain nothing but band-aids, or chemical straight-jackets, and the bisexual conflict pathogen itself is never resolved, forcing the patient to remain on drugs for the remainder of his or her life. The vast majority of these drugs greatly diminish the sexual drive and of course this aids in eliminating much of the toxic effect of the undischarged homosexual libido, thereby substantially reducing the symptoms of the mental illness.

The only true cure for schizophrenia is long-term psychotherapy wherein the afflicted person can finally come to terms with his or her intense bisexual conflict and resolve it satisfactorily by either accepting one's homosexuality or else maturing into heterosexuality.

Update:

Woman 'married' to Berlin Wall for 29 years
By Richard Alleyne 8:38AM BST 27 May 2008

A woman with a bizarre fetish for inaninimate objects has revealed she has been married to the Berlin Wall for 29 years.

Eija-Riitta Berliner-Mauer, 54, whose surname means Berlin Wall in German, wed the concrete structure in 1979 after being diagnosed with a condition called Objectum-Sexuality.

Mrs Berliner-Mauer, whose fetish is said to have its roots in childhood, claimed she fell in love with the structure when she first saw it on television when she was seven.

She began collecting "his" pictures and saving up for visits. On her sixth trip in 1979 they tied the knot before a handful of guests.

While she remains a virgin with humans, she insists she has a full, loving relationship with the wall.

Mrs Berliner-Mauer, who lives in Liden, northern Sweden, said: "I find long, slim things with horizontal lines very sexy.

"The Great Wall of China's attractive, but he’s too thick â€" my husband is sexier."

While the rest of mankind rejoiced when the Wall, erected by the Soviets in 1961 to halt an exodus from East to West Berlin, was largely torn down in 1989, its "wife" was horrified.

She's never been back and now keeps models depicting "his" former glory.

She said: “What they did was awful. They mutilated my husband."

Weird and Extreme / The Berlin Wall: A Love Story
March 07, 2011, 01:22:01 PM
This is me.

My name is Eija-Riitta Berliner-Mauer,I was born on March 20, 1954. I live in a small village called Liden in Northern Sweden

This is my husband. His name is the Berlin Wall and he was born on August 13, 1961. I expect you've heard of him; he is quite a celebrity. He lives in Berlin.

I used to work in a pharmacy. Now I own a museum. My husband's job was to divide East and West Berlin. He is retired now.

How we met

We've been in love for many years. I was attracted to him ever since he was born. Yes, he is some years younger than me. But neither of us feels that this age difference matters. True love can easily transcend a few years.

It was very much a long distance romance as neither of us likes to travel. For much of the time, I had to make do with photos of him. And of course seeing him in newspapers and on the television. But the distance between us only served to intensify our feelings for each other.

Our wedding

We eventually married on June 17, 1979 at Groß-Ziethener Straße in Berlin. On that day I took my husband's name, Berliner-Mauer. That is "Berlin Wall" in German, which is my husband's first language.

Now

We have been together now for many years, spiritually if not physically. Like every married couple, we have our ups and downs. We even made it through the terrible disaster of November 9, 1989, when my husband was subjected to frenzied attacks by a mob.

But we are still as much in love as the day we first met. We may not have a conventional marriage, but neither of us cares much for conventions. Ours is a story of two beings in love, our souls entwined for all eternity.

Antipsychotics for Schizophrenia Associated With Subtle Loss in Brain Volume

ScienceDaily (Feb. 8, 2011) â€" Patients with schizophrenia who take antipsychotic medications appear to lose a small but measurable amount of brain tissue over time, according to a report in the February issue of Archives of General Psychiatry, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Schizophrenia affects 1 percent of the worldwide population and remains a leading cause of chronic disability among young adults, according to background information in the article. Progressive changes in brain volume observed in patients with schizophrenia have been thought to be an effect of the disease. "However, recent animal studies indicate that antipsychotics, the mainstay of treatment for schizophrenia patients, may also contribute to brain tissue volume decrement," the authors write. "Because antipsychotics are prescribed for long periods for schizophrenia patients and have increasingly widespread use in other psychiatric disorders, it is imperative to determine their long-term effects on the human brain."

Beng-Choon Ho, M.R.C.Psych., and colleagues at University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, Iowa City, studied 211 patients with schizophrenia who underwent repeated neuroimaging beginning soon after their illness. Each patient had an average of three magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans over 7.2 years, for a total of 674 scans. The authors then assessed the relative contributions of four predictors -- illness duration, antipsychotic treatment, illness severity and substance abuse -- on changes in brain volume over time.

Patients who were followed for longer periods of time experienced more reductions in brain volume. Antipsychotic treatment was also associated with brain tissue reduction after controlling for the other three predictors. More intense antipsychotic treatment was associated with overall measures of brain tissue loss, smaller gray matter volume and progressive declines in white matter volume.

The other two variables, illness severity and substance abuse, had no or minimal association with brain changes after the effects of illness duration and antipsychotic treatment were considered.

"Findings from the present study raise several clinical questions. Are antipsychotic-associated gray matter and white matter volume reductions 'bad' for patients?" the authors write. Although they are assumed to be undesirable, the benefits of long-term treatment may outweigh the risks, they note. "However, our findings point toward the importance of prescribing the lowest doses necessary to control symptoms."

In addition, the results raise concerns about the use of antipsychotics for people who do not have schizophrenia, including children, older adults and patients with bipolar or depressive disorders.

"Antipsychotics are effective medications for reducing some of the target clinical symptoms of schizophrenia: psychotic symptoms. In medicine we are aware of many instances in which improving target symptoms worsens other symptoms," the authors conclude. "It is possible that, although antipsychotics relieve psychosis and its attendant suffering, these drugs may not arrest the pathophysiologic processes underlying schizophrenia and may even aggravate progressive brain tissue volume reductions."

Editorial: Results Highlight Need for Close Monitoring, Other Treatment Options

"Although proof that antipsychotic medications cause reductions in brain volume in individuals with schizophrenia remains elusive, the findings of Ho and colleagues, in concert with those of the aforementioned animal studies and prior reports in humans, raise the important question of the clinical significance of the observed brain volume changes," writes David A. Lewis, M.D., of the University of Pittsburgh, in an accompanying editorial.

"A classic maxim in clinical medicine is to treat the patient, not the laboratory test -- or in this case, the MRI," Dr. Lewis writes. "Thus, the findings of Ho and colleagues should not be construed as an indication for discontinuing the use of antipsychotic medications as a treatment for schizophrenia. But they do highlight the need to closely monitor the benefits and adverse effects of these medications in individual patients, to prescribe the minimal amount needed to achieve the therapeutic goal, to consider the addition of non-pharmacological approaches that may improve outcomes and to continue the pursuit of new antipsychotic medications with different mechanisms of action and more favorable benefit to harm ratios."

8. Doctor’s office

A doctor’s office is not the place to be if you’re trying to avoid germs. These tips can help limit your exposure:

1. Take your own books and magazines (and kid’s toys, if you have your children or grandchildren with you).

2. Also pack your own tissues and hand sanitizers, which should be at least 60% alcohol content.

3. In the waiting room, leave at least two chairs between you and the other patients to reduce your chances of picking up their bugs. Germ droplets from coughing and sneezing can travel about 3 feet before falling to the floor.

7. Airplane bathrooms

When Gerba tested for microbes in the bathrooms of commercial jets, he found surfaces from faucets to doorknobs to be contaminated with E. coli. It’s not surprising, then, that you’re 100 times more likely to catch a cold when you’re airborne, according to a recent study in the Journal of Environmental Health Research. To protect yourself, try taking green tea supplements. In a 2007 study from the University of Florida, people who took a 450-milligram green tea supplement twice a day for 3 months had one-third fewer days of cold symptoms. The supplement brand used in the study was Immune Guard ($30 for 60 pills; immune-guard.us).

6. Grocery carts

The handles of almost two-thirds of the shopping carts tested in a 2007 study at the University of Arizona were contaminated with fecal bacteria. In fact, the bacterial counts of the carts exceeded those of the average public restroom. Swab the handle with a disinfectant wipe before grabbing hold (stores are starting to provide them, so look around for a dispenser). And while you’re wheeling around the supermarket, skip the free food samples, which are nothing more than communal hand-to-germ-to-mouth zones.

5. Soap dispensers

About 25% of public restroom dispensers are contaminated with fecal bacteria. Soap that harbors bacteria may seem ironic, but that’s exactly what a recent study found. “Most of these containers are never cleaned, so bacteria grow as the soap scum builds up,” says Charles Gerba, PhD. “And the bottoms are touched by dirty hands, so there’s a continuous culture feeding millions of bacteria.” Be sure to scrub hands thoroughly with plenty of hot water for 15 to 20 secondsâ€"and if you happen to have an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, use that, too.

4. Restroom door handles

Don’t think you can escape the restroom without touching the door handle? Palm a spare paper towel after you wash up and use it to grasp the handle. Yes, other patrons may think you’re a germphobeâ€"but you’ll never see them again, and you’re the one who won’t get sick.

3. Condiment dispensers

It’s the rare eatery that regularly bleaches its condiment containers. And the reality is that many people don’t wash their hands before eating, says Kelly Reynolds, PhD. So while you may be diligent, the guy who poured the ketchup before you may not have been, which means his germs are now on your fries. Squirt hand sanitizer on the outside of the condiment bottle or use a disinfectant wipe before you grab it. Holding the bottle with a napkin won’t help; napkins are porous, so microorganisms can pass right through, Reynolds says.

2. Lemon wedges

According to a 2007 study in the Journal of Environmental Health, nearly 70% of the lemon wedges perched on the rims of restaurant glasses contain disease-causing microbes. When the researchers ordered drinks at 21 different restaurants, they found 25 different microorganisms lingering on the 76 lemons that they secured, including E. coli and other fecal bacteria. Tell your server that you’d prefer your beverage sans fruit. Why risk it?

1. Restaurant menus

Have you ever seen anyone wash off a menu? Probably not. A recent study in the Journal of Medical Virology reported that cold and flu viruses can survive for 18 hours on hard surfaces. If it’s a popular restaurant, hundreds of people could be handling the menusâ€"and passing their germs on to you. Never let a menu touch your plate or silverware, and wash your hands after you place your order. Or use antibacterial wipes.

An average adult can touch as many as 30 objects within a minute, including germ-harboring, high-traffic surfaces such as light switches, doorknobs, phone receivers, and remote controls. At home, you do all that you can to keep the germs at bay. But what happens when you step out the door to go to dinner, do some grocery shopping, or visit the doctor’s office? Camachile trees sweep across the Northern landscape, especially along the Tarlac highway. They are known for their edible seeds protected inside a knuckled skin protection similar to the tamarind fruit. Seldom do people climb the thorny body of the tree, so people merely pick up the camachile seeds that fall on the ground. How did the camachile tree begin to have thorny trunks and branches? This myth gives us an idea.

A long time ago, the myth says that the Camachile tree had no thorns when it first appeared on the Earth. It was popular for its beautiful and colorful flowers that were the envy of other trees in the forest. It literally dazzled passersby of its rich array of multi-colored flowers that almost covered the entire treeâ€"it was like a blooming flower with blooming flowers. According to the myth, the tree also radiated with the dominance of the red flowers. Thus, it was sometimes referred to as a bed of red and red orange flowers.

The myth further says that because of its beautiful flowers, children and old alike would climb it and pick the flowers. But gradually, without being aware of it, the myth says that the people were slowly destroying the tree by the indiscriminate climbing and picking. Lots of times, branches were broken off and a lot of young leaves and flowers were also destroyed just to get fully blooming flowers at the top of the tree, the myth adds.

Then, fed up by the people’s carelessness, the myth says the camachile tree finally voiced out its helpless situation to the heavens. It wished to have something on its trunks and branches to protect itself from the careless and thoughtless people who seemed hellbent on destroying the whole tree. The myth adds, the flowers were only thrown away later, anyway.

The god of the forest took pity and thought of something he could give the tree for protection. The camachile tree, according to the myth, was given thorns which grew all over its body, twigs and branches. The camachile tree also lost its flowering ability to make sure no one will ever dare climb it again. But, still being kind to its admirers, the myth says that the camachile opted to have edible seeds, in place of its flowers, to give to the people.

one more sentence using ugok, islander, so you can pass grade 1...

'ugok ray di gyod mo-delete ug post sa tb kun mopaayon ra ka niya kanunay ug pakapinan pa gyod nimo ug gilok nga dayeg.' ;D

Hmm, sakto man ning pagkagamita, pero another apt word in this context is "buringog".  :-X
