Article by Jacob M Appel
(May 04, 2009) in Politics / Immigration

The United States had an “open door” policy for white immigrants from the nation’s founding until the passage of the Emergency Quota Act of 1921. As a result of the Naturalization Act of 1790, all “free white persons” of “good moral character” arriving on our shores were offered a short, simple path to full citizenship. In one of their often unheralded yet non-the-less remarkable contributions, the first generation of American statesmen welcomed Catholics ineligible for full citizenship in Great Britain, and Jews unable to naturalize in France. Over the next century, despite occasional bursts of nativist brayingâ€"most notably, the No Nothing Movement of 1854-1856â€"this nation remained largely faithful to those celebrated lines of the poet Emma Lazarus that are now inscribed upon the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty: Give me your tired, your poor / Your huddled masses yearing to breathe free. While this promise of welcome rang undeniably hollow for Africans and Asiansâ€"one of our greatest causes for national shameâ€"the very essence of American “exceptionalism” was our open gate.

As the issue of immigration returns to our national agenda, policy makers should remember that there is a third alternative to either deportation or amnesty for so-called “illegal” aliens: a return to the “open door” policy that built our nation. I do not have the professional expertise to speak to the economics of such an approachâ€"although my personal intuition tells me that new immigrants will generate jobs rather than consume themâ€"but the ethics of open borders are strikingly clear. Treating human beings differently, simply because they were born on the opposite side of a national boundary, is hard to justify under any mainstream philosophical, religious or ethical theory.

That is not to say that all “birthrights” are unjust. For example, while being born into a particular family is the result of chance, the right to inherit some of one’s parents’ property serves useful and meaningful social purposesâ€"such as encouraging mothers and fathers to work and save for their offspring. The “birthright” of nationality serves no such social purpose. In contrast, the freedom to travel and to settle where one wishes, in pursuit of political freedom or economic opportunity, is among the most basic of human rights. I am grateful that my grandfather was admitted to this country, fleeing Belgium in the days before World War II. I am horrified by the sealed borders that prevented boatloads other Jewish refugees from following him. From an ethical point of view, however, it is difficult to distinguish such political refugeesâ€"to whom we do grant asylum todayâ€"from the millions of economic refugees who seek freedom from abject poverty. The principal difference between the Irish peasants who once fled the potato blight on coffin ships, and the desperate Haitian rafters that our navy forcibly repatriates today, is bad timing.

Any reasonable “open door” immigration policy should still exclude those who pose a danger to our current citizenry: would-be terrorists, wanted felons, tuberculosis patients unwilling to accept treatment, etc. From an ethical standpoint, a liberal democracy might also restrict immigration should newcomers threaten to use the political process to dismantle existing freedomsâ€"if, for example, ten million advocates of Taliban-style fundamentalism were to demand entrance into Luxembourg. Considering the size and diversity of our nation, any meaningful threat to American democracy from immigrants seems highly far-fetched.

Comorbidity of DSM-IV Personality Disorders in unipolar and
bipolar affective disorders: a comparative study.

Schiavone P, Dorz S, Conforti D, Scarso C, Borgherini G.
Affective Disorders Unit, Casa di Cura Parco dei Tigli, Padova, Italy.

The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of Personality Disorders
assessed by Structured Clinical Interview for Axis-II in 155 inpatients diagnosed
with Unipolar Disorder vs inpatients with Bipolar Disorder (39). The most
frequent Axis II diagnoses among Unipolar inpatients were Borderline (31.6%),
Dependent (25.2%), and Obsessive-Compulsive (14.2%) Personality Disorders.
Among Bipolar inpatients, the most prevalent personality disorders were
Borderline (41%), Narcissistic (20.5%), Dependent (12.8%), and Histrionic
disorders (10.3%). Using chi squared analysis, few differences in distribution
emerged between the two groups: Unipolar patients had more recurrent
Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder than Bipolar patients (chi(1)2=6.24,
p<.005). Comorbid Narcissistic Personality Disorder was significantly more
frequent in the Bipolar than in the Unipolar group (chi(1)2=6.34, P<.01).
Considering the three clusters (DSM-IV classification), there was a significant
difference between the groups, Cluster C (fearful, avoidant) diagnoses being more
frequent in the Unipolar than in the Bipolar group (48.4% vs 20.5%, respectively).
Cluster B (dramatic, emotionally erratic) diagnoses were found more frequently in
patients with Bipolar Disorders (71.8% vs 45.2% in Unipolar patients,
chi(2)2=10.1, p<.006). The differences in the distribution and prevalence of
Personality Disorders between the two patient groups are discussed.

Science and Research / Cancer And Heredity
March 12, 2011, 04:25:16 PM
Genes play a role in the development of some cancers. The link is strongest for breast, bowel and stomach cancers. Current research suggests that environmental factors such as tobacco, diet, infection, alcohol, drugs, radiation and chemicals are more important than genetic (hereditary) factors in determining development of most cancers.

All cancer is triggered by altered genes. However, only five to 10 per cent of cancers are actually hereditary.

Heredity may sometimes appear to be the reason for a cancer, especially when the same types of cancers run in families.

Cancers with a genetic component

These cancers do appear to have some genetic link:

    * Breast cancer
    * Bowel cancer
    * Stomach cancer
    * Prostate cancer.

Genetics and breast cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Australia women. There are almost 2,900 cases in Australia each year. This means that one in 11 women are affected by breast cancer during their life. Many risk factors can influence a woman’s chance of developing breast cancer. The most common risk factors are being a woman and getting older. Family history of breast or ovarian cancer is also an important risk factor in developing breast cancer. Hereditary factors are only responsible for about one in 20 cases of breast cancer (5%).

Genetics and bowel cancer

Bowel cancer is the second most common cancer in Australia after prostate cancer. There are almost 3,500 cases diagnosed in Australia each year. The biggest single risk factor is age. More than eight out of 10 bowel cancers are diagnosed in the over-60s. The risk of getting this disease increases as you get older. It is estimated that about two out of three bowel cancers could be prevented with changes in diet and lifestyle.

Assessing a family history of cancer

When a person has a ‘strong family history’ of cancer, it usually means that they have several relatives diagnosed with the same cancer, over different generations on the same side of the family. It can also mean that one or more relatives were diagnosed at an unusually young age.

People who have a strong family history of cancer may be offered a referral to a specialist genetics service. Understanding an individual’s family history usually includes checking the cancer diagnoses of the person’s relatives by obtaining pathology reports. An estimate of the risk of cancer to the individual may be provided.

If indicated, certain additional tests can be helpful in the risk assessment. In some situations, genetic testing may be appropriate and might be offered after careful discussion about its implications.

People assessed to have a higher than average risk of cancer will be referred to a specialist. They can talk to the person about having screening so as to detect signs of cancer as early as possible. This can ensure prompt treatment and optimal outcome.

Genetics may make you more vulnerable

Genetics may mean that some people are more vulnerable to cancer than others; however, environmental factors often determine which of these people will develop the disease. Current research suggests that most cancers are caused by environmental factors, such as diet and smoking.

Einstein

The Mustache

Like the overall appearance of the man who sported it, Einstein’s mustache was a little wild, a little shaggy, and perfect for a man who spent most of his time contemplating things beyond the grasp if 99% of the rest of us. All while still maintaining an unshakable air of charm and humility.

‘Stache, or No ‘Stache?

Even without his white and wild mustache, Einstein still looks like the stereotypical absent-minded professor, but there’s a sadness around his mouth that isn’t evident when it’s covered with crazy white whiskers. Since for most of us the image of Einstein is one of childlike wonder at the complexity of the universe as well as the staggering genius to understand it, it’s probably a good thing that he kept that magical soup strainer for his entire life.

#64151
Che Guevara

The Mustache

Doctor, revolutionary, and fan of writing his diary while driving a motorcycle, Che Guevara and his mustache have long transcended their Cuban roots and have become an international symbol for Marxist struggle, political freedom, and idiot college students who don’t understand either but like t-shirts.

‘Stache, or No ‘Stache?

Che is one of the few mustache guys that maintains his coolness without his trademark lip umbrella. In fact, he may even look better. He still has the same piercing eyes, flowing locks, and intense beret, but there is definitely a difference. Without his sparse, stoner dude mustache Che looks less like a loudmouth who ruins every Poli Sci 101 class with his endless and inane comments and more like a serious intellectual. That can only be a good thing.

#64152
Burt Reynolds

The Mustache

At the start of his career, Burt Reynolds could go either way when it came to his famous mustache. Few people realize that in the classic Deliverance, he’s as clean shaven as a pornstar. But he’s still pretty badass in that flick. Nevertheless, once he went to the ‘stache full time and Reynold’s star rose in Hollywood and around the world, he became a glowing symbol of hairy masculinity. Here was a man, in all his lip-tickling glory.

‘Stache, or No ‘Stache?

Come on! He’s Burt Reynolds. Without that glorious patch of man hair under his nose he’s just another dude with a bad toupee. Reynolds needs the mustache just as much as we need him to have it. Styles may come and go, but isn’t nice to know that somewhere in the world there’s a handsome man with a mustache?

#64153
Salvador Dali

The Mustache

Artist, filmmaker and all-around weirdo Salvador Dali is generally famous for two things; his surreal, disturbing paintings and his even more surreal and way more disturbing mustache. Although he wore a fairly standard mustache in his youth, it grew wider and wilder as he got older and more famous/crazy. It is said by the time of his death it was so large that he had to hire two African Pygmies just to support it. That’s not true, but it was a pretty crazy mustache.

‘Stache, or No ‘Stache?

A lot of Dali’s craziness is in his googly eyes, but without the two curly, waxing tufts of hair to give his face some pizazz, he just looks like a creep with a staring problem.

#64154
Groucho Marx

The Mustache

Unlike all the other fine examples of manly growth on this list, Groucho Marx’s famous mustache was never real. He did grow one in his later years, but at the height of his fame his “mustache” was nothing more than a thick slathering of black grease paint. Real or not, did he need it?

‘Stache, or No ‘Stache?

Of course he did, he’s Groucho! Without his comically oversized lady tickler he’s just Harpo with a slightly better haircut. With it, he’s a mustachioed madman who sticks it to anybody and everybody. The perpetual outsider and anti-authoritarian, Groucho’s mustache says to the world, “I may look like an idiot, but you are one.” besides, if Groucho didn’t have a mustache, what would we do with all those plastic Groucho glasses?

#64155
Tom Selleck

The Mustache

In the 1980s, nobody symbolized Male sexuality like Mr. Tom Selleck and his wonderful mustache. Thick, bushy, and cared for with only the finest tropical salves and oils, Selleck’s mustache was the stuff of legends. From his hit TV series Magnum P.I. to the movies, Tom Selleck rode his mustache to the heights of fame. If ever there was a man who could teach the world to sing in peace and harmony with his facial hair, it was Tom Selleck.

‘Stache, or No ‘Stache?

Tom Selleck doesn’t look awful without his mustache, he just doesn’t look like Tom Selleck. The clean shaven space between his mouth and his nose looks like a giant lost opportunity. If you can grow a mustache as rich and full as Tom Selleck’s, isn’t it a crime not to?

#64156
Charlie Chaplin

The Mustache

Like Hitler, Silent film star Charlie Chaplin also sported a “toothbrush” mustache. In terms of length, width, and style, Chaplin’s mustache is almost identical to Hitler’s. But where Hitler used his to terrorize the Free World, Chaplin used his to make it laugh.

‘Stache, or No ‘Stache?

While Chaplin looks fine without his mustache and it may even suit his “innocent tramp” persona better, he needs to have it. Without him, the toothbrush style of mustache will forever be associated with Hitler’s tyranny and oppression. Instead of Chaplin’s mastery of physical comedy and hilariously oversized pants.

#64157
Hitler

The Mustache

Arguably one of the most famous bits of lip hair in the history of mankind, Hitler’s mustache has come to represent all that is evil and impure in facial hair. If anyone in the world ever misused their mustache, it was Adolf Hitler. Instead of using his mighty ‘stache for good, he used it to seduce the German public into following him down a path of destruction and hatred. Seriously uncool, dude.

‘Stache, or No ‘Stache?

Hitler certainly looks a lot nicer without his trademark “toothbrush” mustache, but unfortunately it shows off his harelip. Even still, he looks like a pretty regular guy, if a little dull. In the end, we’re going to have to agree with famed Nazi hunter Aldo Raine from Inglourious Basterds that it’s better for a Nazi to look like a Nazi. Without a mustache, Hitler just looks normal, and that won’t do.

#64158
http://www.toptenz.net/

Once upon a time, just about every man in the world felt it was his sworn and solemn duty to grow a mustache. Boys would long for the day when the space above their lips sprouted the thick, beautiful hairs that would tell the world they were men. Mustaches may have fallen out of fashion for the most part, but for certain famous men in history, they remain an indelible part of their images.

10 Eggs and Bacon

Nothing starts the day off better than a couple of eggs and fatty bacon. The protein of the eggs and the grease of the bacon form a great mixture that powers you through the day. It should also be mentioned that bacon generally is great combined with all kinds of other foods as well â€" even sweet things such as Bacon and Maple Cookies.

9 Butter and Popcorn

Popcorn was originally discovered by the Native Americans. Popcorn became increasingly popular during the Great Depression because it was relatively cheap, it’s use was especially popular in movie theaters. Now when you go to the movies the spell of popcorn almost seems irresistible, despite its now horrendously expensive price. Butter and popcorn was bound to be a match made in heaven, after all, what is better than fresh corn smeared with butter?

8 Pizza and Beer

Let’s all face it, what is better than a nice pepperoni pizza and an ice cold beer? The hot grease of the pizza is nicely washed down by the refreshing beer. And to further enhance an already great evening, when dining on this lovely combination, throw in a movie, some buttered popcorn, and make a night of it! Just watch out for the calories â€" as delicious as this mix is, it was clearly designed by Satan himself to get us all to hell faster.

7 Salt and Pepper

The combination of salt and pepper dates back to seventeenth century French cuisine, as it was thought that pepper was the only spice which did not overpower the natural taste of the food. All foods can be better with a little bit of salt and pepper. On their own both pepper and salt can be used in savory and sweet cooking â€" and in combination they can convert something bland into something wonderful. Every chef worth his weight will use these two together on almost everything he cooks.

6 Burger and Fries

Although french fries may date back to the 1600s-1700s, their popularity sky-rocketed when they began to be sold worldwide through fast food chains, especially McDonald’s. Most fast food chains quickly paired the fries with burgers, creating one delicious meal. Did you know that it was American Soldiers who coined the term “French Fries”, when they tasted them for the first time in Belgium during World War I? In most other English speaking parts of the world they are referred to simply as “chips” and French Fries is considered an Americanism.

5 Spaghetti and Meatballs

Some claim the combination began in the early 20th century, where Italian immigrants were making them in New York City. However, others claim that the pairing dates back to Old World Italy. Regardless of the origin, the two compliment each other and make for a great, filling meal â€" and an especially good one for the poor college student.

4 Cheese and Crackers

The classic combination of cheese and crackers became increasingly popular with the development of the Ritz cracker in 1934, by Nobisco. The combo serves as a great snack, especially for small get togethers. Unlike most of the other entries on this list, this is a food combination loved by both rich and poor â€" whether you put cheap old cheese on store-bought crackers or the finest truffle laced mature brie on handmade crackers â€" the combination is simple, tasty, and unbeatable for parties.

3 Tortilla Chips and Salsa

Although the combination of chips and salsa is typically considered to be Mexican food, the combo really boomed when tortilla chips began being mass produced in Los Angeles. Now the combination serves as one of the most popular appetizers and snacks. This is also a combination that can be as unique as it’s maker â€" as long as your salsa contains tomatoes, you can add virtually anything else and it will still taste great with tortilla chips.

2 Mashed Potatoes and Gravy

One of the ultimate combinations, the gravy moistens the potatoes and adds the little extra flavor to create the perfect combination. Letting the gravy poor all over the potatoes, seemingly completes the mashed potatoes. This is obviously such a popular combination that it is a signature dish of Kentucky Fried Chicken. Oh â€" and if you want the secret KFC recipe for potato and gravy, you can find it here. Listverse has also published a top 10 list of secret recipes from other fast food outlets.

1 Oreos and Milk

The Oreo was created in February 1912 by Nabisco in New York City. Oreos immediate popularity resulted in it being the best selling cookie of the 20th century. It has since been dubbed “Milk’s Favorite Cookie”. The milk seems to be the perfect match to the chocolate of the oreo, making the duo one of the best. But, despite the popularity of the oreo and milk combination, milk and any type of cookie is great â€" maybe you should try it with the maple bacon cookies listed above.

The Paradox of the Court is a very old problem in logic stemming from ancient Greece. It is said that the famous sophist Protagoras took on a pupil, Euathlus, on the understanding that the student pay Protagoras for his instruction after he had won his first case (in some versions: if and only if Euathlus wins his first court case). Some accounts claim that Protagoras demanded his money as soon as Euathlus completed his education; others say that Protagoras waited until it was obvious that Euathlus was making no effort to take on clients and still others assert that Euathlus made a genuine attempt but that no clients ever came. In any case, Protagoras decided to sue Euathlus for the amount owed.

Protagoras argued that if he won the case he would be paid his money. If Euathlus won the case, Protagoras would still be paid according to the original contract, because Euathlus would have won his first case.

Euathlus, however, claimed that if he won then by the court’s decision he would not have to pay Protagoras. If on the other hand Protagoras won then Euathlus would still not have won a case and therefore not be obliged to pay. The question is: which of the two men is in the right?

Dimiao is located on the southern coast of the province. How it got its name is not known It is one of the oldest municipalities which had a population of 8,820 in 1897. This town used to occupy a large territory which included Valencia and Lila. Later, Valencia was separated from Dimiao because of increased population and Lila was made and independent municipality on January 1, 1915.

Kining Lila ug Valencia, mao ni sila ang mga baranggay sa Dimiao nga milambo tungod sa kakugi sa mga Insik nga mitapon didto, mga Insik nga gihinginlan sa mga Dimiaonon gikan sa poblasyon.

Baba Vanga was a blind Bulgarian woman (born 1911, died 1996) who was a herbalist and alleged mystic who made many predictions for the future. She became incredibly popular due to her so-called mystical powers. When she died huge crowds attended her funeral. Among her many predictions she claimed that by 4599 man would achieve immortality and that less than 100 years later we would begin assimilating with the aliens we meet on the hundreds of planets we will have populated. She claimed that in 4509 man will become sufficiently developed that he will begin to communicate with God directly. In 2221, while searching for extraterrestrial life man will come into contact with something truly terrible (though she didn’t state what). Closer to our own time she predicted a change in the Earth’s orbit in 2023. Curiously she predicted the beginning of World War III in 2010, which does not obviously appear to have happened â€" though her followers say the machinations may be in place for this to happen.

Alois Irlmaier

http://listverse.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/128297565-alois-irlmaier-9.jpg?w=550&h=412

Irlmaier was a simple German man who, in the 1950s, made predictions of a third world war. This is a small sampling of what he claimed the third world war would look like: “Everything calls peace. Shalom! Then it will occur â€" a new Middle East war suddenly flares up, big naval forces are facing hostility in the Mediterranean â€" the situation is strained. But the actual firing spark is set on fire in the Balkans: I see a ‘large one’ falling, a bloody dagger lies beside him â€"then impact is on impact. Two men kill a third high-ranked. They were paid by other people. One of the murderers is a small black man, the other a little bit taller, with bright-colored hair. I think it will be at the Balkans, but I cannot say it exactly. [...] Immediately the revenge comes from across the large water. However the yellow dragon invades in Alaska and Canada at the same time. But he comes not far. And then it rains a yellow dust in a line. When the golden city is destroyed, it begins…” Most interesting in these predictions is the fact that he believes the war will begin in the Middle East which seems certain to many people in the 21st century.
