How To Tips / 5 Ways to Reduce Food Waste

http://www.care2.com/greenliving/5-ways-to-reduce-food-waste.html#ixzz1GU2M8aKL

1. Order and Cook Less

Whether you’re eating out or cooking at home, take a hard look at what you’re planning for your meals. Of course, you want to make sure you have enough food prepared for you and your family, but over ordering or cooking way too much just leads to waste. This might take some observation as you get a feel for how much you guys actually eat, but the reduction in waste is not only good for the planet, it’s good for your wallet!

It’s important to balance this out. You don’t want to feel guilted into the clean plate club. Remember: food you eat after you’re full is just as wasted as food you throw away.

2. Eat Those Leftovers

Whether you planned to have leftovers or accidentally ordered or cooked too much food, making sure you eat them before they go bad is key to reducing food waste. You can try revamping those leftovers into a whole new meal or just plan to eat them later on in the week on a night that you don’t feel like cooking. Either way, it’s important not to shove that leftover food into the back of the fridge to rot. If you don’t think you’ll be able to eat them before they go bad, why not portion that leftover food into servings and stick them in the freezer?

3. Cut the Packaging

You might not think of that take out container or the bag your pre-washed lettuce came in as food waste, but all of that packaging really adds up. Next time you’re ordering take out, see how the restaurant feels about you bringing it home in your own, clean, reusable container. At the grocery store, just being more conscious of packaging can make a big difference. Instead of pre-cut broccoli florets in a plastic bag, for example, you can pick up a head of broccoli and cut it up youself. Voila! You’ve dodged a bit of waste and probably saved a buck at the same time.

For something like broccoli, you can probably get away without using a produce bag, but for dry goods like beans or more delicate produce like lettuces, you do need some kind of bag. In those situations, why not try toting your own reusable produce bags?

4. Don’t Shop Hungry

This might seem like a no-brainer, but how many times have you bought far too much at the grocery store because you were shopping on an empty stomach? Hungry shopping leads to impulse buys, often of packaging-heavy, processed foods. Even if you just end up with way too many fruits and veggies, are you going to be able to eat all of that food before it spoils? A quickie snack before you head to the store can go a long way toward preventing waste in your kitchen.

5. Compost Your Food Scraps

One of the biggest problems with food waste is that all of that organic material breaks down into methane, a greenhouse gas many times more harmful than CO2, in the landfill. Rather than tossing veggie scraps into the trash, toss them into your compost bin where they can break down into nutrient-rich dirt.

Even apartment dwellers can get in on the composting action! You might think a small space would make composting too hard, but it’s easy as pie to get a bin going even in a tiny apartment. If you don’t have a garden to benefit from all of that good compost, you can use it to nourish potted plants or just dump it outside.

Japan Plans Post-Quake Spending Bill as Fiscal Risk Rises

March 13, 2011, 4:26 AM EDT
By Christopher Anstey

March 13 (Bloomberg) -- Japan aims to compile a package to fund the rebuilding effort after its strongest earthquake on record, a step that may worsen the challenge of reining in the world’s biggest public debt.

The northern Tohoku region most affected by the disaster accounts for about 8 percent of gross domestic product, and is host to factories making products from cars to beer. It also has energy infrastructure including a nuclear power plant that the government said is at risk of a meltdown after an explosion.

Factory shutdowns, power cuts and the impact on consumer confidence may hurt Japan’s GDP for a period of months, while contributing to growth later as reconstruction occurs, economists said. The additional public spending risks hurting demand for Japanese government bonds, said analyst Alicia Ogawa.

Policy makers will need to compile a spending package “over the medium to long-term” to cope with the aftermath of the 8.9-magnitude earthquake and the tsunami it triggered, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told NHK Television. Officials will use about 200 billion yen ($2.4 billion) left over from the budget for the fiscal year ending March 31 to pay for the recovery effort, he said, adding that local elections scheduled for next month may be delayed.

Inspiration & Hope / Forgiveness and Orgasm
March 13, 2011, 06:55:10 PM
I can forgive, but I cannot forget, is only another way of saying, I will not forgive.  Forgiveness ought to be like a cancelled note â€" torn in two, and burned up, so that it never can be shown against one. ~Henry Ward Beecher

Walking through the woods today with an old friend who I have been recently reunited with, we shared stories of the times when we did not live up to the best of ourselves as mothers. The truth is that the business of raising children is a mixed bag because all families are reflections of both the best and worst parts of who we are. Our children inherit both, and the art of it, if there is one, is to strive always to be our best and forgive ourselves for our worst.

Seems easy enough to say, but self forgiveness is a life work and many people grow up so familiar with some kind of shame that it is easy to hang onto our worst mistakes and spin long-term consequences out of every weakness. Overcoming the story line that keeps us from finding peace in ourselves is the result of trying to forgive ourselves.

Louis B. Smedes wrote “Forgiving does not erase the bitter past. A healed memory is not a deleted memory. Instead, forgiving what we cannot forget creates a new way to remember. We change the memory of our past into a hope for our future.” This is the transformational process of forgiving.  This is the human alchemy of turning our worst mistakes into fertilizer for the future. We choose another way of seeing the situation and before long it alters how we remember it and ourselves.

Forgiveness though is also elusive. You can’t make yourself or anyone else forgive and it is not in our immediate human nature to  let go. You could say the same exact words about the experience of orgasmic pleasure.  No one can force themselves or anyone else into the deep and transformative pleasure of orgasm.  In both cases, all you can do is offer yourself up to the process by being open, curious and vulnerable.  It also helps to stop the thinking, analyzing and questioning which only keeps the mind preoccupied and distracted from the present moment business of release. You literally cannot orgasm and create a mental shopping list at the same time.   You cannot forgive someone if you are cataloging their offenses in your mind.

In the end, that maybe what is so powerfully similar about process of forgiveness and orgasm. They are both a kind of grace that  takes over and releases us completely into the present moment. In the most visceral of ways, for moments not measurable by our classic sense of time, we are free of our mind and at peace in our body. Although I have never seen a study I would bet that there is a proportional similarity between the percentage of people who don’t easily find pleasure and who have never forgiven themselves the shame of not finding pleasure.

Sometimes all you have to do is ask for release and mean it.

“If you want to progress on a spiritual path, you must challenge your actionsâ€"including what you eatâ€"as to whether they are authentic expressions of the love and spirit within you.”  John Robbins

I have a friend who loves to collect clichés. He believes that we repeat them so often because they have some truth to them. Take, for example, the old adage “You are what you eat.”  Even more than that, you are what remains in your body after the rest has been eliminated. Restricting your food choices can be beneficial to your health, and can also serve as an investigation into your true nature. The manner in which animals are raised and slaughtered carries both energetic and karmic consequences that the human race must all share. Compare it to standing by while someone you love is being harshly abused. You wouldn’t. You would find a way to help them from being hurt or killed. We share the karma because we are aware of the pain that is being inflicted and do nothing to prevent it from happening. The ethical treatment of animals is the responsibility of all peoples and is one of the precepts of right and moral conduct to do no harm.

Empirical evidence shows that energy cannot be destroyed. The energy we put into the preparation of our food, as well as, the energy that remains in the fiber of the meat you eat, can affect how you think and feel on any given day. With meditation, you bring a calm and tranquil mind to the kitchen, and the results of that mental energy is transferred to your food and back again to the body. Does this mean that you must be a vegetarian in order to become liberated? People have been considering this question since ancient times. The different schools of thought range from strict vegetarians, who wear a face mask so as not to accidentally swallow an insect and cause harm, to those who transform the karmic energy of slaughtered animals to a higher level and use it for good. The range of beliefs and perceptions are wide and diverse including whether to confine animals for their butter and milk or chickens for their eggs. Each individual must decide for him or herself.

I have experienced how a balanced vegetarian diet can help to calm and center the body in tune to how meditation brings peace to the mind. Consuming meat that still holds the animal’s pain and fear does not contribute to a calm and centered body; instead, it causes feelings of heaviness and lethargy. A diet made up of mostly meat, fish, eggs, overcooked and packaged foods can make a person dull, lazy, lacking in high ideals, purpose, and motivation. This can eventually result in developing chronic ailments and suffering from depression.

As we look for answers to the healthy survival of our planet and the human species a significant change in diet must be seriously undertaken. If you are determined to reduce your carbon footprint then include 1-2 vegetarian meals on a daily basis as a place to begin. If you are not sure what a days worth of meals might look like, then here is a typical day without animal protein, refined flour, and refined sugar products.

Upon rising: Juice of half a lemon in 1 cup warm water with 1 teaspoon raw honey.
Breakfast: Cooked whole grain cereal (oatmeal, cream of rice, spelt flakes), with maple syrup, blueberries and walnuts.
Snack: 6 almonds and 1 apple.
Lunch: Bean burrito with brown rice, mixed green salad with sprouts and flax seed oil vinaigrette.
Snack: Fruit smoothie made with a non-dairy milk, ½ banana, strawberries and maple syrup or stevia.
Dinner: Lentil miso soup, whole grain bread with nut butter, dark green salad with steamed broccoli.

This is a very basic menu that you can enhance with a variety of organic food additions. It supports a clean, healthy body and a clear, focused mind. Of course, it always makes sense to check with your physician before changing your diet, especially if you are taking medications. As your diet improves your blood pressure and cholesterol will naturally lower, so have your doctor monitor your meds until you don’t need them any longer. The African baobab tree (adansonia digitata) blossom opens only to moonlight and it is pollinated by fruit bats.

By Silke Ceruti

The African Baobab Tree (Adansonia digitata) is a tree with many stories and interesting facts.

Adansonia digitata can be found all over the African continent and even Madagascar. It reaches heights of 5 to 30 metres (16 to 98 ft) and has a trunk diameters of 7 to 11 metres (23 to 36 ft). Flowers are equally large with up to 7 inches in size. The tree produces edible fruit, called monkey bread as especially baboons love it. I have eaten monkey bread, and have to admit that the sour taste is not especially appealing to my European palate. Having said that, in the African culture the fruit, seeds and even young leaves and seedlings are very much used for local dishes and drinks.

Here is some more interesting and mystical information on the Baobab Tree...

1. The African tribes call the tree "the upside down tree". When bare of leaves, the spreading branches of the Baobab look like roots sticking up into the air as if it had been planted upside-down. An African legend tells that the baobab was amongst the first trees to appear on Earth. When the palm tree, the flame tree and the fig tree appeared, the Baobab began to grumble that it wanted to be taller, to have brilliant flame coloured flowers, and bear tasty fruit too. The Gods grew angry at this incessant wailing and pulled up the tree by its roots, and replanted in upside down to keep it quiet!

2. The African baobab tree is also called the "tree of life" as it can store water during the drought season which is sometimes vital to the rural population. Large baobab trees could contain more than 30,000 gallons of water, and to get to it, Kalahari bushmen use hollow pieces of grass like a straw to suck the water out.

3. The baobab is Africa's latest fair trade sensation. On the 15th July 2008 the European Union has officially approved the export of powdered baobab fruit to the United Kingdom as a healthy additive to cereal bars and smoothies. The baobab is said to have three times the vitamin C content of an orange, and as much calcium as a glass of milk. According to Britain's University of Southampton, the baobab is rich in vitamin B1, B2, and C, and calcium, plus it's bursting with antioxidants.

4. The citric and tartaric acids found in the pulp provide the base for cream of tartar, often used as a baking ingredient.

5.Because of their size, people have been storing supplies in old hollow trunks or have been living inside a Baobab Tree. Have a look at a website called "bigbaob" for some amazing videos.

6. Natural medicine uses the bark of the Baobab to lower fevers, chewing a leave is apparently waking you up and ingesting some of the tartar powder is helping with stomach aches.

7. In rural Africa the bark is used to make ropes and even clothing.

8. Rafiki (the baboon) from "The Lion King" lives in a Baobab Tree.

The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins
(1822) by William Blake, Tate Gallery.

Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten virgins, who took their lamps, and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. Those who were foolish, when they took their lamps, took no oil with them, but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. Now while the bridegroom delayed, they all slumbered and slept. But at midnight there was a cry, "Behold! The bridegroom is coming! Come out to meet him!" Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. The foolish said to the wise, "Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out." But the wise answered, saying, "What if there isn't enough for us and you? You go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves." While they went away to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. Afterward the other virgins also came, saying, "Lord, Lord, open to us." But he answered, "Most certainly I tell you, I don't know you." Watch therefore, for you don't know the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.

-â€" Matthew 25:1-13, World English Bible

(EIM) (BANAT NEWS)
