Talk of the Town / Leksyon sa linog

KUMBATI Ni Rico Lucena (Banat) Updated March 15, 2011 12:00 AM

- (BANAT NEWS)

Police hope a man in Florida will think long and hard before he prank calls 911 again.

Investigators in Broward County say 28-year-old Matthew Wade Douglas Jr. is responsible for two obscene 911 calls in which a man graphically described symptoms -- and raunchy home remedies -- following an alleged overdose on the impotence drug Viagra.

Douglas is accused of calling 911 after midnight on Jan. 16, giving a fake name and address, and claiming he needed medical help because he had swallowed too many little blue pills, according to a police report posted on the Broward Sheriff's Office website.

Dispatchers say the man spoke explicitly about the effects the pills were having on his body, then detailed how his "wife" was performing oral sex on him to help reduce the pain. (Police put quotation marks around the word "wife" apparently because his marital status was in question.)

Deputies visited the address given by the man on the phone, but the homeowner at that property claimed no one at the residence had called authorities. After emergency operators received a second prank call, law enforcement officials visited the address again, only to be told that no one had dialed 911.

In February, detectives returned to the address with a recording of the 911 calls. That's when the homeowner recognized the individual on the phone as Douglas -- a man who had dated his daughter.

After checking the files, investigators realized Douglas was already in jail on disorderly conduct charges and an open-container violation.

He now faces additional charges of misuse of the 911 system and making an obscene or harassing telephone call.

Douglas is not the first person to wind up in jail after calling 911 to talk about love. Last year, police in Ohio arrested a woman who allegedly called 911 fives times in an hour demanding that an operator help her find a husband, and another woman accused of repeatedly calling 911 looking for a date.

The Great Wave off Kanagawa
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Description

This impression is of the yoko-e type, in landscape, and was produced to the ōban size, 25 centimetres high by 37 wide .

The landscape consists of three elements: the sea whipped up by a storm, three boats and a mountain. The composition is complemented by the signature which stands out in the upper left-hand corner.

The Mountain

The mountain that is seen at the bottom is Mount Fuji, with a snowcapped peak. Fuji is the central figure in the meisho-e work (representation of famous places) Thirty six views of Mount Fuji, which give a portrait of the mountain seen from various angles. In Japan Mt. Fuji is considered sacred and is a symbol of national identity, in addition to being considered a symbol of beauty.

The dark color around Fuji seems to indicate that the image takes place early in the morning, with the sun rising from the point of the observer, and illuminating the snowy peak. Between the mountain and the viewer there are cumulonimbus clouds, and although they indicate a storm, there is rain on neither Fuji nor the main scene.

Boats

In the scene there are three oshiokuri-bune, fast boats that are used to transport live fish from the Izu and Bōsō peninsulas to the markets of the bay of Edo. As the name of the piece indicates the boats are in Kanagawa prefecture, with Tokyo to the north, Mt Fuji to the northeast, the bay of Sagami to the south. and the bay of Tokyo to the east. The boats oriented to the southeast, are returning to the capital.

There are eight rowers per boat, clinging to their oars. There are two more passengers in the front of each boat, bringing the total number of human figures in the image to thirty. Using the boats as reference, one can approximate the size of the wave: the oshiokuri-bune were generally between 12 to 15 meters long, and noting that Hokusai reduced the vertical scale by 30%, the wave must be between 10 to 12 meters tall.

The Sea and the Waves

The sea is the dominant element of the composition, that is taken up by an extending wave about to break, which dominates the entire scene. In the moment captured in this image the wave forms a circle whose center is in the center of the design, allowing the viewer to see Mt Fuji in the background.

The Great Wave off Kanagawa
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Great Wave off Kanagawa (神奈川沖浪裏, Kanagawa Oki Nami Ura?, lit. "Under a Wave off Kanagawa"), also known as The Great Wave or simply The Wave, is a woodblock print by the Japanese artist Hokusai. An example of ukiyo-e art, it was published sometime between 1830 and 1833[2] (during the Edo Period) as the first in Hokusai's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjÅ«rokkei (富嶽三十å...æ™¯?)), and is his most famous work. This particular woodblock is one of the most recognized works of Japanese art in the world. It depicts an enormous wave threatening boats near the Japanese prefecture of Kanagawa. While sometimes assumed to be a tsunami, the wave is, as the picture's title notes, more likely to be a large okinami lit. "wave of the open sea." As in all the prints in the series, it depicts the area around Mount Fuji under particular conditions, and the mountain itself appears in the background.

Copies of the print are in many Western collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the British Museum in London, and in Claude Monet's house in Giverny, France.

By JAY ALABASTER and TODD PITMAN, Associated Press â€" Sun Mar 13, 4:05 pm ET

SENDAI, Japan â€" The estimated death toll from Japan's disasters climbed past 10,000 Sunday as authorities raced to combat the threat of multiple nuclear reactor meltdowns and hundreds of thousands of people struggled to find food and water. The prime minister said it was the nation's worst crisis since World War II.

Nuclear plant operators worked frantically to try to keep temperatures down in several reactors crippled by the earthquake and tsunami, wrecking at least two by dumping sea water into them in last-ditch efforts to avoid meltdowns. Officials warned of a second explosion but said it would not pose a health threat.

Near-freezing temperatures compounded the misery of survivors along hundreds of miles (kilometers) of the northeastern coast battered by the tsunami that smashed inland with breathtaking fury. Rescuers pulled bodies from mud-covered jumbles of wrecked houses, shattered tree trunks, twisted cars and tangled power lines while survivors examined the ruined remains.

One rare bit of good news was the rescue of a 60-year-old man swept away by the tsunami who clung to the roof of his house for two days until a military vessel spotted him waving a red cloth about 10 miles (15 kilometers) offshore.

The death toll surged because of a report from Miyagi, one of the three hardest hit states. The police chief told disaster relief officials more than 10,000 people were killed, police spokesman Go Sugawara told The Associated Press. That was an estimate â€" only 400 people have been confirmed dead in Miyagi, which has a population of 2.3 million.

According to officials, more than 1,800 people were confirmed dead â€" including 200 people whose bodies were found Sunday along the coast â€" and more than 1,400 were missing in Friday's disasters. Another 1,900 were injured.

For Japan, one of the world's leading economies with ultramodern infrastructure, the disasters plunged ordinary life into nearly unimaginable deprivation.

Hundreds of thousands of hungry survivors huddled in darkened emergency centers that were cut off from rescuers, aid and electricity. At least 1.4 million households had gone without water since the quake struck and some 1.9 million households were without electricity.

While the government doubled the number of soldiers deployed in the aid effort to 100,000 and sent 120,000 blankets, 120,000 bottles of water and 29,000 gallons (110,000 liters) of gasoline plus food to the affected areas, Prime Minister Naoto Kan said electricity would take days to restore. In the meantime, he said, electricity would be rationed with rolling blackouts to several cities, including Tokyo.

"This is Japan's most severe crisis since the war ended 65 years ago," Kan told reporters, adding that Japan's future would be decided by its response.
