EVANSTON, Ill. â€" A Northwestern University journalism professor whose students are credited with helping to free more than 10 innocent men from prison â€" including death row â€" has been pulled from the class that made him famous amid allegations of ethics violations.

David Protess told the Chicago Tribune he was notified by email this week that he wouldn't be teaching the investigative journalism course for the upcoming quarter.

He will continue as director of the Medill Innocence Project, but he said he doesn't know whether the project will continue to be affiliated with the class. Investigative journalism students usually conduct the project's investigations.

[Related: Ill. residents split on end of death penalty]

Protess and his investigative reporting students have helped free more than 10 innocent men from prison, including death row, since 1996. Their work also is credited with prompting then-Gov. George Ryan to empty the state's death row in 2003, re-igniting a national debate on the death penalty and leading to the end of capital punishment in Illinois.

But the Innocence Project's recent investigation of Anthony McKinney, who is serving a life sentence for the 1978 murder of a security guard, has brought scrutiny of the students and their reporting methods. The Cook County State's Attorney's office has subpoenaed the students' notes and grades, suggesting that students may have received better grades from Protess for uncovering evidence of the man's innocence.

Protess and his students have vigorously denied those allegations, and a lawyer hired by the university defended Protess in criminal court until he abruptly resigned last fall, telling Protess in an email obtained by the Chicago Tribune that, "We believe that you have displayed a lack of candor with us and have not cooperated with us."

The split with attorney Richard O'Brien and the university stems from accusations that Protess withheld student memos and notes from prosecutors while giving them to McKinney's attorneys.

"The university spent close to a year and hundreds of thousands of dollars protecting those things that we believed to be privileged," Alan Cubbage, Northwestern's spokesman, told the Tribune in reference to the fight over the subpoena for student records. "That fight was based on the representations from Protess that those documents had not been provided to anyone else. And it was clear that what had not been turned over (to prosecutors) was in his possession."

Protess told the Tribune that he never misled the university or its lawyer, and he blamed the situation on confusion between himself and McKinney's legal team. In the meantime, the university has hired former U.S. Attorney Anton Valukas to investigate allegations of ethics violations by Protess and the Innocence Project.

The eight students registered for the spring investigative journalism course have petitioned the university to reconsider its decision to remove Protess and have threatened to drop the class.

"Please take stock of the reasoning behind your decision in this case. In our minds, it was not made in consideration of the best interests of the students, past, present or future," the petition reads, according to the (Evanston) Daily Northwestern. "Reconsider your decision and let us have the professor we all signed up for and the professor we deserve."

History / Postmodernism
March 18, 2011, 07:49:56 PM
A general and wide-ranging term which is applied to literature, art, philosophy, architecture, fiction, and cultural and literary criticism, among others. Postmodernism is largely a reaction to the assumed certainty of scientific, or objective, efforts to explain reality. In essence, it stems from a recognition that reality is not simply mirrored in human understanding of it, but rather, is constructed as the mind tries to understand its own particular and personal reality. For this reason, postmodernism is highly skeptical of explanations which claim to be valid for all groups, cultures, traditions, or races, and instead focuses on the relative truths of each person. In the postmodern understanding, interpretation is everything; reality only comes into being through our interpretations of what the world means to us individually. Postmodernism relies on concrete experience over abstract principles, knowing always that the outcome of one's own experience will necessarily be fallible and relative, rather than certain and universal.

Bible Study / The Old Catholic Church
March 18, 2011, 05:40:23 PM

Old Catholic parish church in Gablonz an der Neiße, Austria-Hungary (now Jablonec nad Nisou, Czech Republic). A considerable number of ethnic German Catholics supported Döllinger in his rejection of the dogma of papal infallibility.

The Old Catholic Church is a Ultrajectine Christian denomination originating with groups that split from the Holy See because they disagreed with essential doctrines. The church is not in communion with the Holy See, though the Union of Utrecht of Old Catholic Churches is in full communion with the Anglican Communion and a member of the World Council of Churches.

The term "Old Catholic" was first used in 1853 to describe the members of the See of Utrecht who did not recognise any claimed 'infallible' papal authority. As the groups that split from the Holy See in the 1870s had no bishop, they joined Utrecht to form the Union of Utrecht.

The Old Catholic theology views its Eucharist as the core of being a Church. From that point the Church is a community of believers. All are in communion with one another around the surrender of life by Jesus Christ, as the highest expression of the love of God. Therefore in the celebration of the Eucharist is the faithful experience of how the Lord prevailed by the surrender of his life to defeat sin. Sin is that power that divides life in all of its dimensions. The defeat of sin consists in bringing together that which is divided. Through communion, discrepancies between people are reconciled, what was scattered brought together. In the Old Catholic theology, “Church” means reconciliation. “Church” means the restoration of broken relations between God and men and men with each other. It is the leading to a new communion in which the old differences and discriminations between people are removed. Distinctions in position and places are there to manifest the unity in differences and reflect in that way the being of the triune God.

The Old Catholic Church considers unity in diversity. Communion aims at personal human well being, so that reciprocally individual persons enrich the community at large. And what is said of believers is true for Churches as well. Individual churches are too restrained to reflect the richness of God's love, therefore it is necessary that they are also in communion with one another. It is the communion of churches that can reflect â€" unified as they are in diversity â€" the creativity of the Lord’s care about humanity. Old Catholics usually refer to the Church Father St. Vincent of Lerins in his saying: "We must hold fast to that faith which has been believed everywhere, always, and by all the Faithful."

1914, 1915, 1918, 1920, 1925, 1941, 1975 and 1994, etc. were other dates that the Watchtower Society (WTS) or its members predicted.  Since late in the 19th century, they had taught that the "battle of the Great Day of God Almighty" (Armageddon) would happen in 1914 CE. It didn't.

The next major estimate was 1925. Watchtower magazine predicted: "The year 1925 is a date definitely and clearly marked in the Scriptures, even more clearly than that of 1914; but it would be presumptuous on the part of any faithful follower of the Lord to assume just what the Lord is going to do during that year." 6

The Watchtower Society selected 1975 as its next main prediction. This was based on the estimate "according to reliable Bible chronology Adam was created in the year 4026 BCE, likely in the autumn of the year, at the end of the sixth day of creation." 8  They believed that the year 1975 a promising date for the end of the world, as it was the 6,000th anniversary of Adam's creation. Exactly 1,000 years was to pass for each day of the creation week. This prophecy also failed.

The current estimate is that the end of the world as we know it will happen precisely 6000 years after the creation of Eve. 9 There is no way of knowing when this happened.

More details on the WTS predictions.

1919: Meteorologist Albert Porta predicted that the conjunction of 6 planets would generate a magnetic current that would cause the sun to explode and engulf the earth on DEC-17.

1843-MAR-21: William Miller, founder of the Millerite movement, predicted that Jesus would come on this date. A very large number of Christians accepted his prophecy.

1844-OCT-22: When Jesus did not return, Miller predicted this new date. In an event which is now called "The Great Disappointment," many Christians sold their property and possessions, quit their jobs and prepared themselves for the second coming. Nothing happened; the day came and went without incident.

1850: Ellen White, founder of the Seven Day Adventists movement, made many predictions of the timing of the end of the world. All failed. On 1850-JUN-27 she prophesied that only a few months remained before the end. She wrote: "My accompanying angel said, 'Time is almost finished. Get ready, get ready, get ready.' ...now time is almost finished...and what we have been years learning, they will have to learn in a few months." 10

1856 or later: At Ellen White's last prediction, she said that she was shown in a vision the fate of believers who attended the 1856 SDA conference. She wrote "I was shown the company present at the Conference. Said the angel: 'Some food for worms, some subjects of the seven last plagues, some will be alive and remain upon the earth to be translated at the coming of Jesus." 11 That is, some of the attendees would die of normal diseases; some would die from plagues at the last days, others would still be alive when Jesus came. "By the early 1900s all those who attended the conference had passed away, leaving the Church with the dilemma of trying to figure out how to explain away such a prominent prophetic failure." 12

1881: Mother Shipton, (1488 - 1561), a 16th century mystic predicted the end of the world: "...The world to an end shall come; in eighteen hundred and eighty-one."

1891 or before: On 1835-FEB-14, Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon church, attended a meeting of church leaders. He said that the meeting had been called because God had commanded it. He announced that Jesus would return within 56 years -- i.e. before 1891-FEB-15. (History of the Church 2:182)

1914 was one of the more important estimates of the start of the war of Armageddon by the Jehovah's Witnesses (Watchtower Bible and Tract Society). They based their prophecy of 1914 from prophecy in the book of Daniel, Chapter 4. The writings referred to "seven times". The WTS interpreted each "time" as equal to 360 days, giving a total of 2520 days. This was further interpreted as representing 2520 years, measured from the starting date of 607 BCE. This gave 1914 as the target date. When 1914 passed, they changed their prediction; 1914 became the year that Jesus invisibly began his rule.

1832?: Joseph Smith (1805-1844) was the founder of the Church of Christ, which became the Restorationist movement after many schisms. It now includes The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints -- a.k.a. the Mormons, and about a hundred other denominations and sects. He heard a voice while praying. He wrote, in Doctrines and Covenants section 130:

14: "I was once praying very earnestly to know the time of the coming of the Son of Man, when I heard a voice repeat the following:"

15: "Joseph, my son, if thou livest until thou art eighty-five years old, thou shalt see the face of the Son of Man; therefore let this suffice, and trouble me no more on this matter."

16: "I was left thus, without being able to decide whether this coming referred to the beginning of the millennium or to some previous appearing, or whether I should die and thus see his face."

17: "I believe the coming of the Son of Man will not be any sooner than that time." 14
The year in which this event occurred is not recorded. However, one commentator suggested 1832 or earlier. 16 Smith is later recorded as having said:
"I prophesy in the name of the Lord God, and let it be written--the Son of Man will not come in the clouds of heaven till I am eighty-five years old." 17

Smith would have reached the age of 85 during 1890. Unfortunately, by that year, Smith had been dead for almost a half century, having been assassinated by a mob. Note that his prophecy is ambiguous. It can be interpreted that:

Jesus would return during 1890 (which did not materialize) or that
1890 would pass without Jesus' return (which did come to pass).

Some anti-Mormon sources quote only verses 14 and 15, and draw the former conclusion -- that Smith's prophecy failed.

#63358
1496: This was approximately 1500 years after the birth of Jesus. Some mystics in the 15th century predicted that the millennium would begin during this year.

1524: Many astrologers predicted the imminent end of the world due to a world wide flood. They obviously had not read the Genesis story of the rainbow.

1533: Melchior Hoffman predicted that Jesus' return would happen a millennium and a half after the nominal date of his execution, in 1533. The New Jerusalem was expected to be established in Strasbourg, Germany. He was arrested and died in a Strasbourg jail.

1669: The Old Believers in Russia believed that the end of the world would occur in this year. 20 thousand burned themselves to death between 1669 and 1690 to protect themselves from the Antichrist.

1689: Benjamin Keach, a 17th century Baptist, predicted the end of the world for this year.

1736: British theologian and mathematician William Whitson predicted a great flood similar to Noah's for OCT-13 of this year.

1792: This was the date of the end of the world calculated by some believers in the Shaker movement.

1794: Charles Wesley, one of the founders of Methodism, thought Doomsday would be in this year.

1830: Margaret McDonald, a Christian prophetess, predicted that Robert Owen would be the Antichrist. Owen helped found New Harmony, IN.

#63359
1000-JAN-1: Many Christians in Europe had predicted the end of the world on this date. As the date approached, Christian armies waged war against some of the Pagan countries in Northern Europe. The motivation was to convert them all to Christianity, by force if necessary, before Christ returned in the year 1000. Meanwhile, some Christians had given their possessions to the Church in anticipation of the end. Fortunately, the level of education was so low that many citizens were unaware of the year. They did not know enough to be afraid. Otherwise, the panic might have been far worse than it was. Unfortunately, when Jesus did not appear, the church did not return the gifts. Serious criticism of the Church followed. The Church reacted by exterminating some heretics. Agitation settled down quickly, as it later did in the year 2000.

1000-MAY: The body of Charlemagne was disinterred on Pentecost. A legend had arisen that an emperor would rise from his sleep to fight the Antichrist.

1005-1006: A terrible famine throughout Europe was seen as a sign of the nearness of the end.

1033: Some believed this to be the 1000th anniversary of the death and resurrection of Jesus. His second coming was anticipated. Jesus' actual date of execution is unknown, but is believed to be in the range of 27 to 33 CE.

1147: Gerard of Poehlde decided that the millennium had actually started in 306 CE during Constantine's reign. Thus, the world end was expected in 1306 CE.

1179: John of Toledo predicted the end of the world during 1186. This estimate was based on the alignment of many planets.

1205: Joachim of Fiore predicted in 1190 that the Antichrist was already in the world, and that King Richard of England would defeat him. The Millennium would then begin, sometime before 1205.

1284: Pope Innocent III computed this date by adding 666 years onto the date the Islam was founded.

1346 and later: The black plague spread across Europe, killing one third of the population. This was seen as the prelude to an immediate end of the world. Unfortunately, the Christians had previously killed a many of the cats, fearing that they might be familiars of Witches. The fewer the cats, the more the rats. It was the rat fleas that spread the black plague.

Failed prophecies:

About 30 CE: The Christian Scriptures (New Testament), when interpreted literally, appear to record many predictions by Yeshua of Nazareth (Jesus Christ) that God's Kingdom would arrive within a very short period, or was actually in the process of arriving. For example, Jesus is recorded as saying in Matthew 16:28: "...there shall be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom." In Matthew 24:34, Yeshua is recorded as saying: "...This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled." Since the life expectancy in those days was little over 30 years, Jesus appears to have predicted his second coming sometime during the 1st century CE. It didn't happen. More details.

About 60 CE:  Interpreting the Epistles of Paul of Tarsus literally, his writings seem to imply that Jesus would return and usher in a rapture during the lifetime of persons who were living in the middle of the 1st century. More details.

About 90 CE: Saint Clement 1 predicted that the world end would occur at any moment.

2nd Century CE: Prophets and Prophetesses of the Montanist movement predicted that Jesus would return sometime during their lifetime and establish the New Jerusalem in the city of Pepuza in Asia Minor.

365 CE: A man by the name of Hilary of Poitiers, announced that the end would happen that year. It didn't.

375 to 400 CE: Saint Martin of Tours, a student of Hilary, was convinced that the end would happen sometime before 400 CE.

500 CE: This was the first year-with-a-nice-round-number-panic.   The antipope Hippolytus and an earlier Christian academic Sextus Julius Africanus had predicted Armageddon at about this year.

968 CE: An eclipse was interpreted as a prelude to the end of the world by the army of the German emperor Otto III.

992: Good Friday coincided with the Feast of the Annunciation; this had long been believed to be the event that would bring forth the Antichrist, and thus the end-times events foretold in the book of Revelation. Records from Germany report that a new sun rose in the north and that as many as 3 suns and 3 moons were fighting. There does not appear to be independent verification of this remarkable event.

To lodge appeal

At a news briefing in Malacañang, Mr. Aquino’s spokesperson Edwin Lacierda expressed sadness over China’s decision to proceed with the executions.

Lacierda told reporters that the Palace might “try” to lodge an appeal.

“But we have to respect the decision of Chinese authorities on the matter. It was unprecedented that they granted us a stay, and this was the first time they did it for an ally,” he said, adding:

“It was very, very clear that it was only a postponement.”

He also said the DFA would explain the latest development to the families of the three convicts.

Asked if the President would still push through with his state visit to China scheduled in May, Lacierda only confirmed that there were such plans.

He said the final details would have to be announced by the DFA or the Chinese foreign ministry. With a report from Christine O. Avendaño

According to law

Batain was formally charged with drug trafficking on June 30, 2009. She is being held at Shenzhen No. 3 Detention House.

“The situation is really bad,” Ambassador Liu said, adding that the increase in the number of drug-related crimes in China between 2007 and 2010 had been “tremendous.”

“And that makes it more a necessity that these crimes be curbed and deterred,” he said. “Laws must be applied.”

Asked why the Chinese government had earlier agreed to defer the execution of the three Filipinos, Liu said the reprieve was done “in accordance to law.”

“We cannot do anything that is beyond the law,” he said.

Assistant Foreign Secretary J. Eduardo Malaya, the DFA spokesperson, said Thursday night that as conveyed by the Chinese government to Binay on Feb. 18, “the execution of the three Filipinos was postponed within the scope of Chinese law.”

Earlier in a statement, the Chinese Embassy said that according to Chinese law, “any person, no matter if he or she is a Chinese citizen or a foreigner, who commits crime shall be brought to justice.”

“No one is privileged to transcend the law. Drug-related crimes, which are doing appalling harm to our societies, have been universally recognized as a scourge by the whole world. [Illegal] drugs are bitterly detested by the international community, China and the Philippines included,” it said.

The Chinese Embassy also said the three Filipinos’ “legitimate rights and interests have been protected in accordance with law. The Chinese side will render their relatives assistance and facilitation as necessary to visit the inmates in China.”

Deterrent

The Philippine government had been seeking a commutation of the death sentence on the three Filipinos.

But Ambassador Liu said they “must be punished.”

“The purpose is not to take the lives of these people. It is to deter and curb [drug-related] crimes,” he said.

Credo, 42, and a father of five children, was arrested on Dec. 28, 2008, at Gaoji International Airport in Xiamen after getting off a China Southern Airlines flight from Manila.

A total of 4,113 grams of heroin was found in his luggage and he was formally charged with drug smuggling on Jan. 21, 2009.

Credo is being held at Xiamen No. 1 Detention House, as is Villanueva, 32.

Villanueva, the mother of two, was apprehended on Dec. 24, 2008, also at Gaoji International Airport in Xiamen, after arriving on a China Southern Airlines flight from Manila.

She was found with 4,410 grams of heroin in her suitcase. Villanueva was formally charged with drug smuggling on Jan. 23, 2009.

Batain, 38, was arrested on May 25, 2008, at the Shenzhen airport after disembarking from an Asiana Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur.

A total of 6,800 grams of heroin was found “sealed inside two reams of bond paper inside her luggage.”

Focus on all

“The three [Filipino drug convicts] are our concern, and so are the thousands in the Middle East and the thousands in Japan, and of course we have to be ready to meet these things all at the same time. I hope you understand that we can’t focus on just one entity; we have to focus on all,” Mr. Aquino said.

But he acknowledged that from the start, the government was told that the stay of execution of the three Filipinos was “temporary,” and that “we have to conform to their laws.”

Binay’s office described Liu’s announcement as “unfortunate.”

The Vice President has yet to receive “official communication” on the matter from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), “but as long as the executions are not carried out, [he] remains hopeful,” said his spokesperson, Joey Salgado.

But Del Rosario himself said “every effort has been made [by the Philippine government] to appeal for clemency.”

“The Chinese have their rule of law to follow,” he told reporters. “I don’t know what other initiatives we can undertake.”

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"Time has run out on three Filipino drug mules in China, and the Philippine government appears resigned to their impending execution.

Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Liu Jianchao Thursday announced that a commutation of the death sentence on Ramon Credo, Sally Villanueva and Elizabeth Batain to life imprisonment had been “ruled out.”

The three Filipinos were granted a rare reprieve last February on the representation of Vice President Jejomar Binay, raising hopes that their lives could be saved.

But in a press briefing at the Chinese Embassy in Makati City, Liu said: “The [death] penalty will be carried out sooner or later.”

He said that per agreement between the two governments, the Philippines would be informed “about the actual way” and “when the penalty will be done” through “diplomatic channels.”

In a chance interview in Malacañang, President Benigno Aquino III said he and Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario had been busy discussing and “preparing” for the plight of Filipinos caught in the civil unrest in the Middle East and in the nuclear crisis in Japan triggered by last week’s earthquake and tsunami.

Travellers could soon be able surf in Bali, shop in Singapore and eat spicy street food in Thailand before crossing into Cambodia and cruising the Mekong in Vietnam - all on a single tourist visa.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is working on a plan that would open the region to foreign tourists in the same way Europe's unified visa system has streamlined travel.

"You would just have to apply for one visa and you could then visit all the countries using that visa," said Eddy Krisneidi, an official at the Jakarta-based ASEAN Secretariat, which recently released its Tourism Strategic Plan for the next five years.

With attractions ranging from jungle-covered temples at Angkor Wat in Cambodia to five-star beach resorts in Bali, Southeast Asia is a region that tempts travellers from all walks of life.

ASEAN countries recorded more than 65 million foreign visitor arrivals in 2009. Malaysia led the field, followed by Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Brunei.

Analysts say visitor numbers could be boosted by slashing the time-consuming and confusing visa requirements for each of ASEAN's 10 countries, which range from vibrant developing democracies to isolated, military-dominated Myanmar.

While some allow foreigners to simply purchase visas on arrival, others require wads of paperwork, photos and up to a week to issue the required stamp.

"One of the major concerns of the industry, as well as visitors, is the difficulty of obtaining visas, a series of widely differing regulations and information needs for visas," ASEAN's strategic plan states.

It is a view shared by Stuart McDonald, who runs an online travel forum for Southeast Asia.

"One of the most common questions that we see on travelfish.org is people asking visa questions: What kind of visa can I get? How long is it valid for? What does it cost?," said the Australian who travels extensively in Asia.

"The rules change all the time and it introduces a level of uncertainty and confusion that the industry can do without."

The concept of a single visa has wide support among tourism bodies across Southeast Asia.

"It would definitely benefit all the countries in this region, especially Thailand," Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Suraphon Svetasreni said, noting that Thailand is a "good strategic location" for overland travelling as it acts as a bridge to other countries.

Svetasreni said it is only a matter of time until the region's visa system is liberalised.

"ASEAN will be considered as a single destination, so it makes sense to apply for a single visa to travel to any country in ASEAN," he said.

Despite its appeal, others are less optimistic that a single visa will become a reality anytime soon.

"Travel procedures have to be simplified but it is not going to be easy because each country may have their own foreign policy," Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel inbound tourism vice president Arul Das said.

ASEAN is yet to outline the cost or length of stay for its planned single tourist visa. But it acknowledges it could take several years to introduce.

"The establishment of such a visa will not likely occur in the next five years due to barriers of technology, political issues, concerns of sovereignty and security and the different visa systems in the member states," its strategic plan states.

The single visa is one of several initiatives being worked on by ASEAN to boost tourism in the region.

The organisation is also overseeing the creation of regional tourism standards which would apply to things such as accommodation, food and public toilets.

"There are already clear indications that major tour operators are now very much concerned with a wide range of standards in a destination," the plan states.

"Those destinations that are able to satisfy those increasingly high standards will have a distinct position of advantage."
