CLAREMONT, Calif.â€"A few dozen members of a white supremacist organization have held an anti-illegal-immigration rally in the east Los Angeles County city of Claremont, where they were vastly outnumbered by counter-protestors.

Claremont Lt. Mike Ciszek said the 30 or so National Socialist Movement demonstrators rallied for an hour and a half Saturday to oppose illegal-immigrant enrollment at the nearby Claremont Colleges.

Ciszek says between 300 and 500 counterdemonstrators rallied nearby. Between 200 and 300 others held a separate peace rally in opposition to the white supremacists in a park four blocks away.

He says about 110 officers were deployed at the white supremacist rally. There were no arrests and no reported injuries or property damage.

facepalm

Facepalm is a colloquial term referring to the physical gesture of striking one's own face in a display of exasperation. It is similar in function to a sigh. In Internet discussions, the term is used as an expression of embarrassment, frustration, disbelief, disgust or general woe. It is also used when the person making the gesture does not believe that words can express the level of idiocy.

Amazon.com Review

"O my America, my new-found-land!" Mateo Renaldo Colombo (or Columbus, to give him his English name) might have written in his De re anatomica."

It is no accident that Federico Andahazi draws a parallel between his Renaissance hero, the anatomist Mateo Colombo, and the explorer Christopher Columbus. It is the conceit of his first novel, The Anatomist (beautifully translated from the Spanish by Alberto Manguel), that both Colombos made "equally momentous and disturbing" discoveries. Every schoolchild can tell you what Columbus's was; less well known, perhaps, is that of his countryman and fellow "explorer." "Mateo's America is less distant and infinitely smaller than Christopher's; in fact, it's not much larger than the head of a nail." In short, Mateo Renaldo Colombo discovered the Amor Veneris, the clitoris.

Andahazi makes much of this discovery, not to mention its discoverer: "The discovery of Mateo Colombo's America was, all things considered, an epic counterpointed by an elegy. Mateo Colombo was as fierce and heartless as Christopher. Like Christopher (to use an appropriate metaphor) he was a brutal colonizer who claimed for himself all rights to the discovered land, the female body." Certainly women readers will view this description with at least as much irony as Native Americans regard that other Columbus's "discovery" of a land they had known about all along.

The Anatomist is based on a historical figure and historical fact; what Andahazi provides is his title character's heart and soul. The fictional Colombo is driven by desire for the high-priced courtesan Mona Sofia. Though Mateo adores her, the heartless Sofia regards him as nothing more than a paying customer. After breaking both his heart and his bank account over her, Colombo returns to his native Padua whence he is eventually called to Florence to treat a saintly young widow, Inés de Torremolinos. Inés is "infinitely beautiful," and her illness is "far from common." While examining her, he discovers "between his patient's legs a perfectly formed, erect and diminutive penis." Land ho.

Though Colombo's "discovery," first in Inés and then in other women, offers plenty of opportunity for eroticism, the most compelling aspect of The Anatomist lies in the Church's reaction to De re anatomica, the book Colombo writes detailing his find. The Renaissance may well have signaled the birth of new art, science, and philosophy, but it was also the age of Inquisition--and Colombo's unfolding of "the key to the heart of all women ... the anatomical cause of love" soon lands him in prison on charges of heresy and Satanism. The trial, Mateo's defense, and the surprising aftermath make for provocative reading and raise The Anatomist above the level of the merely erotic to a more intriguing philosophical plane, one that is sure to prompt a lively discussion or two. --Alix Wilber --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly

In a first novel that aroused long-buried passions in his native Argentina, Andahazi takes readers back to the Renaissance in a fact-based satire about a scientist groping his way toward enlightenment. The relationships between religion and science, love and sex, and men and women are some of the themes that Andahazi addresses in his provocative story, which reigned at the top of the Argentinian bestseller list when the book became a literary scandal. During the age of discovery, renowned physician Mateo Colombo takes on an exploration nearly as perilous as the quest of his famous namesake, Christopher Columbus: he discovers the clitoris and scandalizes the religious and temporal powers of 16th-century Italy. Indeed, Colombo's motivations are not purely unselfish: he dreams of winning the love of one Mona Sofia, the most expensive prostitute in Venice. But after publishing his work he finds himself imprisoned and at the mercy of the vacillating political whims of the Vatican. Andahazi writes with wit and economy in prose that alternates between the lyrical and the mock-scholarly (both rendered seamlessly in Manguel's translation). He cleverly lures the reader into a sense of condescension toward Colombo only to underscore, ultimately, how little progress has been made in solving the problems that vexed him, despite several centuries of research, scientific and otherwise. (Sept.) FYI: The Anatomist won Argentina's prestigious Fortabat Prize for a first novel, but the prize was revoked by Amalia Lacroze de Fortabat, the heiress who endows the award, on the grounds that the book's subject and style are obscene. Anchor is publishing a simultaneous paperback Spanish edition, El Anatomista.

Fregoli delusion

The Fregoli delusion or Fregoli syndrome is a rare disorder in which a person holds a delusional belief that different people are in fact a single person who changes their appearance or is in disguise. Often this belief is of a paranoid nature with the delusional person believing that they are being persecuted by the person whom they believe to be following them.

The condition is named after the Italian actor Leopold Fregoli who was renowned for his ability to make quick changes of appearance during his stage act.

It was first reported in a paper by Courbon and Fail in 1927. They discussed the case study of a 27-year old woman who believed she was being persecuted by two actors who she often went to see at the theatre. She believed that these people "pursued her closely, taking the form of people she knows or meets".

The Fregoli delusion is classed as a delusional misidentification syndrome, a class of delusional beliefs that involves the misidentification of people, places or objects. Like Capgras delusion, it is thought to be related to a breakdown in normal face recognition processes.

Papacy ended    1 December 1521 (8 years, 8 months, 20 days)
Predecessor    Julius II

Personal details

Birth name    Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici

Died    1 December 1521 (1521-12-01) (aged 45), Rome, Papal States

Under his pontificate, Latin Christianity assumed a pagan, Greco-Roman character, which, passing from art into manners, gives to this epoch a strange complexion. Crimes for the moment disappeared, to give place to vices; but to charming vices, vices in good taste, such as those indulged in by Alcibiades and sung by Catullus. --Alexandre Dumas, père

The artist Raffaello Santi designed a memorial fresco (which does not survive), and the Pope himself composed the epitaph:

“Under this great hill I lie buried
Mighty elephant which the King Manuel
Having conquered the Orient
Sent as captive to Pope Leo X.
At which the Roman people marvelled, --
A beast not seen for a long time,
And in my brutish breast they perceived human feelings.
Fate envied me my residence in the blessed Latium
And had not the patience to let me serve my master a full three years.
But I wish, oh gods, that the time which Nature would have assigned to me,
and Destiny stole away,
You will add to the life of the great Leo.

He lived seven years
He died of angina
He measured twelve palms in height.
Giovanni Battista Branconio dell'Aquila
Privy chamberlain to the pope
And provost of the custody of the elephant,
Has erected this in 1516, the 8th of June,
In the fourth year of the pontificate of Leo X.

That which Nature has stolen away
Raphael of Urbino with his art has restored.”

King Manuel had either received him as a gift from the King of Cochin, or had asked Afonso de Albuquerque, his viceroy in India, to purchase him. Hanno was said to be white in colour, and arrived by ship from Lisbon to Rome in 1514, aged about four years, and was kept initially in an enclosure in the Belvedere courtyard, then moved to a specially constructed building between St. Peter's Basilica and the Apostolic Palace, near the Borgo Sant'Angelo (a road in the rione of Borgo). His arrival was commemorated in poetry and art. Pasquale Malaspina wrote:

“In the Belvedere before the great Pastor
Was conducted the trained elephant
Dancing with such grace and such love
That hardly better would a man have danced:
And then with its trunk such a great noise
It made, that the entire place was deafened:
And stretching itself on the ground to kneel
It then straightened up in reverence to the Pope,
And to his entourage.”

Hanno became a great favourite of the papal court and was featured in processions. Two years after he came to Rome, he fell ill suddenly, was given a purgative, and died on 8 June 1516, with the pope at his side. Hanno was interred in the Cortile del Belvedere at the age of seven.

Hanno (Italian, Annone; c. 1510 â€" 8 June 1516) was the pet white elephant given by King Manuel I of Portugal to Pope Leo X (born Giovanni de' Medici) on his coronation. Hanno came to Rome in 1514 and quickly became the Pope's favorite animal. Hanno died two years later from complications of a treatment for constipation with gold-enriched laxative.

Health and Food / My Favorite Asparagus Soup Recipe
March 19, 2011, 03:20:32 PM
Ingredients

    * 3 pounds fresh asparagus, rinsed
    * 8 cups chicken stock
    * 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
    * 1 cup minced shallots
    * 1 cup minced leeks, whites only, well rinsed
    * 1 tablespoon minced garlic
    * 1/2 teaspoon salt
    * 1/4 teaspoon ground white pepper
    * 1/2 cup heavy cream
    * 1/4 cup finely grated Parmesan, garnish

Directions

Trim the attractive top tips from the asparagus, about 1 to 1 1/2 inches in length. Cut the woody stem ends from each spear and reserve. Cut the remaining tender stalks into 1/2-inch pieces.

In a medium pot, bring the stock to a boil. Add the tough woody stems, lower the heat and simmer to infuse with asparagus flavor, 20 to 30 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and discard, reserving the stock.

Add the decorative tips to the stock and blanch until tender, 1 to 1 1/2 minutes. Remove with a strainer and refresh in an ice water bath. Drain on paper towels and reserve for the garnish. Reserve the stock.

In a medium stockpot, melt the butter over medium-high heat. When foamy, add the shallots and leeks and cook until tender, about 3 minutes. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the chopped asparagus stalks, salt, and pepper, and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes. Add the reserved broth and simmer until the asparagus are very tender, 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from the heat.

With a hand-immersion blender or in batches in a food processor, puree the soup until smooth. Adjust the seasoning, to taste. If serving right away, return to medium heat and add the cream and reserved asparagus tips. Cook, stirring, until the soup is warmed through, about 3 minutes.

Alternatively, if serving the soup later, do not add the cream and let cool at room temperature (or in an ice water bath). Cover and refrigerate. Before serving, add the cream and asparagus tips, and warm the soup gently over medium heat, stirring occasionally.

To serve, place the soup in a soup tureen and sprinkle with cheese. Ladle into demi-tasse cups or small coffee or tea cups, and serve.

GLOSSARY OF NUCLEAR TERMS
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 03:55:00 03/19/2011

Containment: A structure that separates the reactor from the environment. It is usually made of high-density, steel-reinforced concrete.

Core: It contains the nuclear fuel and generates heat. It contains low-grade uranium, control systems and structural materials.

Coolant: The liquid or gas material circulating through the core to prevent overheating.

Decommissioning: The process of safely closing a nuclear power plant to retire it from service. This involves decontaminating the facility to reduce residual radioactivity and then releasing the property for unrestricted or (under certain conditions) restricted use. This often includes dismantling the facility or dedicating it to other purposes. Decommissioning begins after the nuclear fuel, coolant, and radioactive waste are removed.

Entomb: A method of decommissioning, in which radioactive contaminants are encased in a structurally long-lived material, such as concrete. The entombed structure is maintained and surveillance is continued until the entombed radioactive waste decays to a level permitting termination of the license of the nuclear facility and unrestricted release of the property.

Fission: The splitting of a heavy nucleus into two roughly equal parts accompanied by the release of a relatively large amount of energy.

Fuel rod: A long slender tube that holds uranium, which fuels a nuclear reactor.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA): The agency, with 151 member states, that inspects nuclear and related facilities under safeguard agreements. It was established in 1957 to facilitate the peaceful use of atomic energy.

Meltdown: It refers to the melting of nuclear fuel rods in the reactor core, releasing radiation in the process. This happens when control rods are not able to control the chain reactions inside the core, or if cool water is not pumped into the reactor continuously.

In partial meltdown, the fuel rods may be only damaged, a portion of them having been left uncovered by cooling water long enough to crack, allowing the release of some radioactive elements in the fuel.

In full meltdown, all cooling water is lost and the rods become completely uncovered. Melting is all but guaranteed, as thousands of fuel pellets fall to the bottom of the reactor and heat themselves into a molten pool at several thousand degrees Celsius. The lava-like fuel might breach the reactor’s pressure vessel and then its containment, leading to widespread release of radioactivity.

Nuclear power plant: A facility that converts atomic energy into usable power.

Nuclear Reactor: A device that contains and controls sustained nuclear reactions. It produces heat that generates electricity.

Potassium iodide: A compound that scientists claim will give some protection from exposure to radioactive iodine-131, which is one of the fission products that can be released in a meltdown. Potassium iodide, however, will not give any protection against any other radioactive isotope that may be released in a meltdown at a nuclear power plant.

Pressurized water reactor: A common nuclear power reactor design in which very pure water is heated to a very high temperature by fission, kept under high pressure (to prevent it from boiling), and converted to steam by a steam generator. The resulting steam is used to drive turbines, which activate generators to produce electrical power.

Radiation: The particles or rays emitted from the nucleus of an unstable radioactive atom as a result of radioactive decay.

Radioactivity: The spontaneous decay of disintegration of an unstable atomic nucleus accompanied by the emission of radiation.

Sievert: A unit of measurement for radiation dosage. The World Health Organization says that the average person is exposed to 3 millisieverts a year of radiation from naturally occurring, medical and other sources. Exposure to 1,000 millisieverts (1 sievert) of radiation can cause radiation sickness.

Spill: The accidental release of radioactive materials.

Spent Fuel: The fuel rods which no longer have enough fissionable uranium to be efficiently used to produce power.

Spent Fuel Pool: An underwater storage and cooling facility for spent fuel assemblies that have been removed from a reactor.

Turbine: It transfers the heat from the coolant to electricity.

Uranium: A naturally radioactive and very dense element. Uranium-235 is the principal nuclear fuel material used in today’s nuclear power reactors.

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"Catholic Church leaders on Friday said they continued to hope for a miracle that would save the three Filipinos facing the death penalty in China.

“Let’s continue to pray, something good may still happen,” Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez told reporters on Friday.

Iñiguez said he was surprised to learn that the government’s appeal to have the death sentence of Ramon Credo, Sally Villanueva and Elizabeth Batain commuted to life imprisonment was not heeded by the Chinese government.

“It is indeed a very sad news … we could only pray for these countrymen of ours and others meted out the death sentence,” said Maasin Bishop Precioso Cantillas, also chair of the Catholic Bishops’ Episcopal Commission for Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People.

“We pray also for governments that still enforce capital punishment that they may value life most over other things and to provide all the chance for human rehabilitation,” added Cantillas.

Despite the bleak outlook for the three Filipino drug mules, President Benigno Aquino III must continue to make an appeal to Chinese officials, said Rodolfo Diamante, executive secretary of the Episcopal Commission on Prison and Pastoral Care.

“While it is true that China’s law has to be respected, but there is also such thing as the law of humanity for humanitarian reason,” said Diamante. “Maybe out of goodwill, they will be given another chance.”

In Alicia, Isabela, the family of Villanueva, though apparently resigned to her execution, nevertheless were still “hoping against hope” that Mr. Aquino would again send an emissary like Vice President Jejomar Binay to again negotiate for another delay.

Villanueva’s brother, Jayson Ordinario, told the Inquirer on Friday that the family was discussing ways to fly to China.

Ordinario said the family’s original plan to meet Sally in China, did not push through. They now intend to pursue the plan provided by the Department of Foreign Affairs to “shoulder the expenses as they promised."

Defense analysts said Libya's military has been weakened by years of neglect, armed with outdated aircraft and weapons, and directed by a radar and communications system that may have limited capabilities.

They cautioned, however, that it is difficult to give an exact assessment of Libya's military abilities, particularly in the wake of the recent uprising that saw some troops defecting and taking their weapons and aircraft with them.

An assessment prepared by the Congressional Research Service this week said greater worries could come after a no-fly-zone was in effect and the U.S. and its allies had to deal with a heavily armed populace in disarray.

"The apparent proliferation of small arms, man-portable air defense missile systems, and some heavy weaponry among fighters on both sides also is leading some outside counterterrorism and arms trafficking experts to express concern about the conflict's longer term implications for regional security," the new report said.

The uprising against Gadhafi is only one of many struggles being played out in the region as long-time autocratic regimes come under pressure. Protests in Tunisia and Egypt have led to the ouster of long-time rulers, and there have been demonstrations in Yemen, Jordan and Bahrain. Protests erupted in at least three parts of Syria during the day Friday, according to state television and other source

Before his public announcement that U.S. forces would join in military action against Libya, Obama met at the White House with congressional leaders of both parties to discuss his thinking.

"The U.S. military will be playing a supportive role in this action. We will not have troops on the ground; instead we are providing strategic support where we have unique capabilities to the Arab and European nations that are taking the lead," said Rep. Howard Berman, D-Calif., the top Democrat on the Foreign Affairs Committee. He took part in the Obama session by telephone.

Speaking earlier, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said he believes Obama has authority to commit U.S. forces to participate in imposing a no-fly zone without congressional approval, but he expressed hope that Congress would bless the move.

If the U.S. military is ordered to establish a no-fly zone, a wide variety of high-tech weapons and aircraft would be sent from bases in Europe and the United States to shut down or disrupt Libya's Soviet-era air defense systems and its communications networks, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz told Congress Thursday.

He said it would take about a week to establish the no-fly zone. If such a mission is ordered, he said, he expected the supersonic F-22 Raptor â€" a jet fighter yet to be used in combat â€" to play a prominent role in the initial wave. With its stealth design, the F-22 can evade radar and has advanced engines that allow it to fly at faster-than-sound speeds without using gas-guzzling afterburners.

Other fighters, such as the F-15 and F-16, would also be used, as would bombers, airlifters, refueling tankers and highly specialized aircraft such as the RC-135 Rivet Joint and the EC-130H Compass Call. The Rivet Joint is loaded with sophisticated intelligence gathering gear that allows the U.S. to spy on the enemy from the air. The Compass Call is an electronic warfare plane that disrupts an adversary's communications.

The administration was divided for weeks over how to address the situation in Libya, which differed from other Arab revolts when it moved from a political uprising to an armed insurrection against a strongman.

Military leaders were most cautious, arguing that a rush to show solidarity with the rebels might be shortsighted. Clinton and some other top diplomats were in the middle, with some White House advisers and U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice apparently most ready to back the use of force.

In remarks to Congress earlier this month, Gates spoke skeptically of the wisdom of military intervention in Libya. He argued that because imposition of a no-fly zone would require attacks first on Libyan air defenses, the operation would be tantamount to going to war.

The Gates view seemed to resonate in the administration until the Arab League last weekend called for U.S. authorization of a no-fly zone. At that point the prevailing U.S. sentiment seemed to shift in favor of pressing for a U.N. Security Council resolution and subsequently giving Gadhafi an ultimatum.

Obama said he was dispatching Clinton to Paris for a meeting Saturday to discuss with British, French and other partner countries the next steps in Libya. The president said he directed Gates to coordinate military planning, which has been in the works for weeks while the administration pondered the ramifications of getting involved militarily while also fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The president made no reference to a Libya's declaration of an immediate cease-fire on Friday â€" a statement that a rebel spokesman said was fiction.

Instead, Obama listed a series of demands for Gadhafi, including the halting of all attacks against civilians, a stop to military action against the rebel-controlled city of Benghazi and other cities and permission for international humanitarian supplies to reach civilians displaced by the violence.

"Let me be clear, these terms are not negotiable," he said.

The president was equally clear that the U.S. would not act alone.

"American leadership is essential, but that does not mean acting alone -- it means shaping the conditions for the international community to act together," he said.

Even more explicitly: "We will provide the unique capabilities that we can bring to bear to stop the violence against civilians, including enabling our European allies and Arab partners to effectively enforce a no-fly zone." He seemed to verbally underline the word "enabling," to emphasize the U.S. support role.

Analysts say Libya's air force and air defense systems, while not negligible, are decrepit by Western standards and unlikely to stand up to assault.

WASHINGTON â€" After weeks of hesitation and divisions among his advisers, President Barack Obama on Friday endorsed military action against Libya's Moammar Gadhafi, saying U.S. values and credibility are at stake to stop "the potential for mass murder" of innocents.

The U.S. military, which is already stretched thin by two wars and an expanding effort to assist disaster victims in Japan, would take a supporting role, Obama said, with European and Arab partners in the lead. He explicitly ruled out sending American ground forces into the North African nation.

A wide range of U.S. firepower stood ready, including Navy ships and submarines capable of launching Tomahawk cruise missiles with high-explosive warheads that could destroy air defense sites and other potential targets in the earliest stages of any allied military action.

In solemn remarks at the White House, Obama never used the word "war," but that is what U.S. forces could face if Gadhafi refuses to comply with United Nations demands. It is widely anticipated that a first step in imposing a no-fly zone over Libya â€" a tactic aimed at keeping Gadhafi's planes from attacking â€" would be assaults on the country's coastal air defenses.

Obama offered a string of reasons for committing to military action.

"Left unchecked, we have every reason to believe that Gadhafi would commit atrocities against his people," he said. "Many thousands could die. A humanitarian crisis would ensue. The entire region could be destabilized, endangering many of our allies and partners. The calls of the Libyan people for help would go unanswered. The democratic values that we stand for would be overrun."

That marked a major shift from the public caution expressed until recent days by Obama's top national security advisers, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and the chairman of the joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen. All had said that a no-fly zone or other military action would be a difficult undertaking tantamount to war, or that it could have unintended consequences.

European leaders have been keen to show support for the Libyan rebels, but the United States had hung back until this week.
