The Code of Kalantiaw was a mythical legal code in the epic story Maragtas. It is said to have been written in 1433 by Datu Kalantiaw, a chief on the island of Negros in the Philippines. It was actually written in 1913 by Jose E. Marco as a part of his historical fiction Las antiguas leyendas de la Isla de Negros (Spanish, "The Ancient Legends of the Island of Negros"), which he attributed to a priest named Jose Maria Pavon.

In 1917, the historian Josué Soncuya wrote about the Code of Kalantiaw in his book Historia Prehispana de Filipinas ("Prehispanic History of the Philippines") where he moved the location of the Code's origin from Negros to the Panay province of Aklan because he suspected that it may be related to the Ati-atihan festival. Other authors throughout the 20th century gave credence to the story and the code.

In 1965, then University of Santo Tomas doctoral candidate William Henry Scott began an examination of prehispanic sources for the study of Philippine history. Scott eventually demonstrated that the code was a forgery committed by Marco. When Scott presented these conclusions in his doctoral dissertation, defended on 16 June 1968 before a panel of eminent Filipino historians which included Teodoro Agoncillo, Horacio de la Costa, Marcelino Foronda, Mercedes Grau Santamaria, Nicolas Zafra and Gregorio Zaide, not a single question was raised about the chapter which he had called The Contributions of Jose E. Marco to Philippine historiography. Scott later published his findings debunking the code in his book Prehispanic Source Materials for the Study of Philippine History. Filipino historians later removed the code from future literature regarding Philippine history.

Tony Lopez ends his analysis with: "Aquino has lost the support of at least 12 million Filipinos who are now disillusioned with him. These supporters want him to junk the BS (b***) out of his BSA and to focus on the Aâ€"the Aquino in him. Aquino is the best brand name in Philippine politics today. Noynoy is squandering the goodwill of the family name with non-performance."

Make Paper Cranes for Japan

Want to show your support for Japan but not sure where to start? Here is a simple and creative way to help that is accessible to people of all ages.

Students Rebuild has partnered with DoSomething.org for the Paper Cranes for Japan campaign. For each origami crane that they receive, the Bezos Family Foundation will donate $2 to Architecture for Humanity’s long-term reconstruction efforts in Japan.

There are two ways your crane can help. After you’ve made your crane (check out this video

Origami: Crane [tutorial]

and visual guide [http://www.wikihow.com/Fold-a-Paper-Crane] for instructions), you can:

Take a photo and upload it to the virtual mosaic on the Paper Cranes for Japan Facebook page, along with a message of support.

Send the crane to:

Students Rebuild
1700 7th Avenue
Ste. 116 #145
Seattle, WA 98101

(If you make more than 50 cranes, you can get a pre-paid shipping label.)

The goal of the project is to reach 100,000 submissions, which will trigger a $200,000 donation. The cranes will also represent 100 wishes for Japan since, according to legend, 1,000 paper cranes equals one wish. In addition, the cranes will be made into an art installation.

Since the earthquake and resulting tsunami, Paper Cranes for Japan has received support and positive messages from countries around the world, including New Zealand and Haiti. For more info, check out Students Rebuild and Facebook.

Health and Food / 5 Foods That Sabotage Your Sleep
March 30, 2011, 01:13:34 PM
By Melanie Haiken, Caring.com senior editor

If you’re having trouble sleeping, what about a midnight snack? It can be a good idea. But be careful to avoid these five foods that can *prevent* you from getting a good night’s rest:

1. Preserved and smoked meats. Slap your hand away when it reaches to make a ham sandwich as an evening snack. Ham, bacon, sausages, and smoked meats contain high levels of the amino acid tyramine, which triggers the brain to release norepinephrine, a brain stimulant that makes us feel alert and wired.

2. Chocolate. Love an evening cup of cocoa? That sundae in front of the TV? Be careful of chocolate in all its disguises. Many people are increasingly sensitive to caffeine as they get older, and even the little chocolate chunks in chocolate chip ice cream could zap you just enough to prevent ZZZZs. Chocolate also contains tyrosine, a stimulating amino acid.

3. Energy drinks. Red Bull and other energy drinks are high in caffeine as well as the amino acid taurine, which boosts alertness and adrenaline. Recent studies have shown that even if you drink energy drinks early in the day, the combined high dosage of taurine and caffeine can make it hard to sleep, or to sleep well, later on.

4. Tomato sauce, chili, pizza, and spicy foods. Digestive disturbances are a common source of sleep problems, but many people fail to make the connection. Acidic and spicy foods can cause reflux, heartburn, and other symptoms that interrupt sleep.

5. The nightcap. A drink or two may make you feel more relaxed after dinner, but it comes back to haunt you â€" literally â€" a few hours later, by preventing you from achieving deep sleep. And because alcohol both dehydrates you and makes you have to pee, it wakes you up, too. Wine is high in the stimulant tyrosine as well.

DAMASCUS: Syrian president Bashar al-Assad accepted his government's resignation on Tuesday after nearly two weeks of pro-democracy unrest that has posed the gravest challenge to his 11-year rule.

But the move was unlikely to satisfy protester demands since the cabinet has little authority in Syria, where power is concentrated in the hands of Assad, his family and the security apparatus. Tens of thousands of Syrians held pro-government rallies on Tuesday, awaiting a speech in which Assad was expected to announce a decision on lifting emergency laws that have served to crush dissent for almost 50 years.

That is a key demand of anti-government demonstrations in which more than 60 people have been killed. "President Assad accepts the government's resignation," the state news agency SANA said, adding that Naji al-Otari, the prime minister since 2003, would remain caretaker until a new government was formed.

A tornado (often referred to as a twister or, erroneously, a cyclone) is a violent, dangerous, rotating column of air that is in contact with both the surface of the earth and a cumulonimbus cloud or, in rare cases, the base of a cumulus cloud. Tornadoes come in many shapes and sizes, but are typically in the form of a visible condensation funnel, whose narrow end touches the earth and is often encircled by a cloud of debris and dust. Most tornadoes have wind speeds less than 110 miles per hour (177 km/h), are approximately 250 feet (80 m) across, and travel a few miles (several kilometers) before dissipating. The most extreme can attain wind speeds of more than 300 mph (480 km/h), stretch more than two miles (3 km) across, and stay on the ground for dozens of miles (more than 100 km).--Wiki

Binirayan Festival

The Binirayan Festival was first witnessed on January 11-13, 1974, organized by Governor Evelio B. Javier in an effort to revisit the past and relive the province’s noble heritage. In this way, Evelio Javier believed the Antiqueño could gain confidence in charting his future.

After many years, the festival has evolved into one of the longest-running cultural festivals in the country, touted by many as the first original cultural festival in the region. Although the Binirayan takes its grand narrative from the Maragtas legends, which highlight the coming and settling of the Bornean datu in Malandog, Hamtic, the present day celebrations has integrated the other indigenous people in Antique like the Ati, the Bukidnon, and the lowland communities to show the diversity of Antiqueño heritage. It also takes pride in its Chinese and Hispanic heritage, as well as the diaspora of Antiqueños all over the world, represented by the layas nga Antiqueños.

The misconceptions surrounding Maragtas were further reinforced when even the highly respected historian, Dr. Henry Otley Beyer called it "a prehispanic document." In Philippine Saga which he wrote with Jaime C. de Veyra in 1947, he mentioned a manuscript from Panay known as Maragtas and “the ancient writing in which it was originally inscribed". Then in his Outline Review of Philippine Archaeology of 1949 he wrote the following:" A remarkable ancient document known as the “Maragtas,” dating probably from about 1225, was preserved in Panay and transliterated into romanized Visayan in the early Spanish days."

The Ten Bornean Datus and the Purchase of Panay

The story of the buying of Panay by ten datus coming from Borneo is told in the Maragtas, a legendary account about the pre-Spanish Panay Island. This narrative tells us that about A.D. 1250, at about the time Malaysia and Indonesia were dominated by the Hindu-Malay Empire of Sri-Vijaya, a cruel sultan named Makatunaw ruled Borneoâ€"or perhaps part of it. Because he was cruel, ten of his datus decided to leave Borneo and seek their freedom and fortune beyond the sea.

The Ten Datus were: Datu Puti (the leader), Datu Balensusa, Datu Bangkaya, Datu Dumalugdog, Datu Dumangsil, Datu Dumangsol, Datu Lubay, Datu Panduhinog, Datu Paliburong, and Datu Sumakwel.

One dark night after loading on boats their families, warriors, slaves, and supplies, they secretly left in their balangays (boats) without a specific destination in mind. After sailing north for many days, they reached the southern tip of Panay Island. They landed at the mouth of the Sirwagan River there, near the present town of San Joaquin in Iloilo. From there they proceeded to Lake Andona where they met an Ati fisherman. This man led them to the Negrito village of Sinugbuhan and was introduced to the local ruler, King Marikudo and his queen, Maniwantiwan. Datu Puti addressed them and said they came as friends and would like to buy land.

Marikudo consulted his wife and the elders of his kingdom and agreed to sell some land to them. The purchase price consisted of a gold salakot (a native helmet) for Marikudo and a long gold sumangyad (necklace) for Maniwantiwan. The sale was sealed by a pact of friendship and merry feasting. After that, Marikudo and his people bade farewell to the Borneans and went into the hills.

Seven of the ten datus settled in Panay. The three othersâ€"Balensusa, Dumangsil and Puti sailed farther north and reached Lake Taal, in present-day Batangas province. Impressed by the fertility and scenic beauty of the area, Balensusa and Dumangsil settled there. Datu Puti, however, returned to Borneo. He told the Borneans about his exciting adventures in the islands of the north.

History / The Ten Bornean Datus: History or Legend?
March 30, 2011, 09:01:51 AM
Legend of the Ten Bornean Datus

The Ten Bornean Datus Epic refers to the ten chieftains who allegedly ventured to the Island of Panay boarding a boat called balangay (or barangay) to evade the tyrannical ruler of Borneo, Datu Makatunaw. The datus, believed to be the fathers of precolonial Philippines, were the following: Datu Puti (and wife, Piangpangan), Datu Sumakwel (and wife, Kapinangan), Datu Bangkaya (and wife, Katurong), Datu Paiborong (and wife, Pabilaan), Datu Paduhinogan (and wife, Tibongsapay), Datu Dumangsol, Datu Libay, Datu Dumangsil, Datu Domalogdog, and Datu Balensuela.

According to the legend, upon the arrival of the datus, the local inhabitants of the islands, the Aeta, grew terrified but the diplomatic Datu Puti said to Marikudo, the chief of the natives, that they had peaceful intentions. Later both parties entered into a trade alliance. Marikudo invited the datus to a feast, during which the ten chiefs negotiated the purchase of Panay Island for a golden salakot. Since the Aetas found the land overwhelmingly vast for them, they retreated to the forest, leaving the Datus with the land which they divided among themselves (namely Aklan, Irong Irong and Hamtik), leading to the birth of Philippine population and culture.

However, recent studies discovered the irregularities of the said legend, and thus, it must not be believed as a reliable source of facts on precolonial Philippines.

But still, these studies are contested, though history per se is limited to "written" historical accounts, the legend is is considered "spoken" historical account and part and parcel of Filipino culture. The legend is important part of the life, culture and identity of Ilonggo people and inhabitants of Panay Island. There is no argument that the roots of the word "barangay" came from "balangay" the boat used by the Ten Bornen datus and their families. Until now, the head of the barangay is a "barangay captain" the only head of a government unit in the world named after a captain of a boat.

"Libya's Gadhafi must go."

Kailangan pa bang i-memorize yan? :P
#62164
Still, the summit left a number of important questions open: Nations didn't discuss whether or not they should â€" or legally can â€" supply weapons to Libya's rebel fighters. There was also no open discussion of how to lure Gadhafi into exile and Qatar gave few details on its offer to help rebels sell crude oil on the international market.

British diplomats also acknowledged there was no decision about the makeup of the contact group, though its first meeting is expected in Qatar in two weeks.

In Washington, Adm. James Stavridis, the NATO Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, told Congress that officials have seen "flickers" of possible al-Qaida and Hezbollah involvement among the rebel forces.

Some officials attending the London meeting acknowledged they had little knowledge of the opposition figures, including some on the 33-member interim council.

However, Spanish Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez discounted the concerns, saying there was little evidence of al-Qaida involvement in the Libyan opposition.

"When the first demonstrations and revolutions started in Tunisia and Egypt there was also speculation about who would join the street demonstrations," Jimenez said. "The reality was that the vast majority were demanding more democracy, more freedom and more rights. That is the impression we also have in Libya."

Despite those worries, Clinton and Juppe both hinted that the international community may need to consider offering weapons to the rebels.

"It is our interpretation that (UN Security Council resolution) 1973 amended or overrode the absolute prohibition on arms to anyone in Libya, so that there could be a legitimate transfer of arms if a country should choose to do that," Clinton said.

Jimenez disagreed, saying the arms embargo applies to all those involved in fighting and suggested that any decision to arm the rebels would require a new U.N. resolution.

Mahmoud Shammam, a spokesman for the Libyan opposition, told reporters in London that, properly equipped, rebels "would finish Gadhafi in a few days."

"We do not have arms. We ask for the political support more than we are asking for the arms, but if we get both that would be great," Shammam said.

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jabr al-Thani said the issue could be addressed later if the aerial campaign falls short of its goal of protecting Libyan civilians.

"We have to evaluate the airstrike after a while to see if it's effective," he said. "We are not inviting any military ground (troops) ... But we have to evaluate the situation because we cannot let the people suffer for so long. We have to find a way to stop this bloodshed."

Opening the talks, Cameron told diplomats that Gadhafi was pounding Misrata, the main rebel holdout in the west, with attacks from land and sea, and unleashing snipers to shoot people in the streets. The Libyan leader "has cut off food, water and electricity to starve them into submission," he said.

"The reason for being here is because the Libyan people cannot reach their future on their own," Cameron said. "We are all here in one united purpose, that is to help the Libyan people in their hour of need."

http://news.yahoo.com/
#62165
Both Clinton and the representatives of Libya's opposition â€" who held a raft of talks on the margins of the London summit â€" acknowledged there were few signs that Gadhafi is heeding those demands. There was no immediate comment from Russia, which abstained in the U.N. vote authorizing the airstrikes that began March 19.

"He will have to make a decision," Clinton said. "And that decision, so far as we're aware, has not yet been made."

Diplomats rejected suggestions that Gadhafi could be granted immunity but said work was under way to find a possible sanctuary for him.

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said negotiations on securing Gadhafi's exit were being conducted with "absolute discretion" and that there were options on the table that hadn't yet been formalized.

"What is indispensable is that there be countries that are willing to welcome Gadhafi and his family, obviously to end this situation which otherwise could go on for some time," he said.

But the Italian diplomat insisted there was no option of immunity for Gadhafi. "We cannot promise him a 'safe-conduct' pass," he stressed.

Libyan Foreign Minister Moussa Kusa visited Tunisia briefly, but there was no word if this was linked to the secret talks.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe insisted it was up to the Libyan people to decide the dictator's fate. "They have to organize the future of their country and to decide what Gadhafi will become," he said.

Hague said Tuesday's meeting brought clarity between allies and offered a key opportunity to discuss Libya's post-Gadhafi future with Libya's opposition Interim National Council, whose envoy, Mahmoud Jibril, held meetings with Hague, Clinton, British Prime Minister David Cameron and several European foreign ministers.

Guma El-Gamaty, a Libyan opposition official, told reporters in London that Gadhafi must be held accountable for his brutalizing of civilians.

"These crimes must not go unpunished. They should be punished at a fair trial held in a fair court," El-Gamaty said.

U.N. special envoy Abdelilah al-Khatib, a former Jordanian foreign minister, will be returning to Libya to hold talks with both Gadhafi's regime and opposition figures. And the U.S. and France are both sending diplomats to the rebel-held Libyan city of Benghazi to bolster ties with opposition leaders.

Those at the summit agreed to form an international contact group of at least a dozen nations and institutions aimed at coordinating political action and liaising with Libya's opposition. Sweden, while not a member of NATO, said it would send eight fighter jets to help enforce the U.N.-authorized no-fly zone over Libya. Turkey said it also will likely join the group.

AP â€" Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron listens
as US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton speaks

LONDON â€" A sweeping array of world powers called forcefully Tuesday for Moammar Gadhafi to step down as Libya's ruler. Some even hinted at secret talks on Gadhafi's exit.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and British Foreign Secretary William Hague led the crisis talks in London between 40 countries and institutions, all seeking an endgame aimed at halting the Libyan leader's bloody onslaught against Libya's people.

Although the NATO-led airstrikes on Gadhafi's forces aren't aimed at toppling him, dozens of nations agreed in the talks that Libya's future does not include the dictator at the helm.

"Gadhafi has lost the legitimacy to lead, so we believe he must go. We're working with the international community to try to achieve that outcome," Clinton told reporters.

As she spoke, U.S. officials announced that American ships and submarines in the Mediterranean had unleashed a barrage of cruise missiles at Libyan missile storage facilities in the Tripoli area late Monday and early Tuesday â€" the heaviest attack in days.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle echoed Clinton's words.

"One thing is quite clear and has to be made very clear to Gadhafi: His time is over. He must go," Westerwelle said. "We must destroy his illusion that there is a way back to business as usual if he manages to cling to power."

Batik is psychedelic.

Yes, especially modern free-form and stylized designs. But even the staid traditional geometric designs--many of them anyway--have some kind of pyschedelic touch, too.

Kingfishers are a group of small to medium sized brightly coloured birds in the order Coraciiformes. They have a cosmopolitan distribution, with most species being found in the Old World and Australia. The group is treated either as a single family, Alcedinidae, or as a suborder Alcedines containing three families, Alcedinidae (river kingfishers), Halcyonidae (tree kingfishers), and Cerylidae (water kingfishers). There are roughly 90 species of kingfisher. All have large heads, long, sharp, pointed bills, short legs, and stubby tails. Most species have bright plumage with little differences between the sexes. Most species are tropical in distribution, and a slight majority are found only in forests. They consume a wide range of prey as well as fish, usually caught by swooping down from a perch. Like other members of their order they nest in cavities, usually tunnels dug into the natural or artificial banks in the ground. A few species, principally insular forms, are threatened with extinction.
