Imhof said he was inspired to launch "Mark The Dog Guy" after attending the American Academy of Pet Grooming school in Manhattan last April, where he met an alumni who owned his own dog grooming business.

Six months later, he said, he quit his job as a certified public accountant, started his business and began donating free 'dos to pups of the Big Apple on the side.

Man Gives Shelter Dogs Free Makeovers to Boost Chances for Adoption

By NICOLE PELLETIERE
04 March 2016
Good Morning America

Man Gives Shelter Dogs Free Makeovers to Boost Chances for Adoption (ABC News)

A New York City man is traveling to nearby animal shelters to primp pups that are in need of forever homes -- for free!

Mark Imhof, 45, who started his grooming business in October, estimates he's given on-the-house haircuts to about 50 dogs -- many of whom have found adoptive families.

"These are dogs," Imhof told ABC News today. "They want to love someone and I think when they have a crusty shell on them and things like that, it makes them unable to do so. When I can clean them up, you can see [their] eyes and it makes them easier to connect. It's trying to bring these dogs to comfort, so they can become more adoptable and that's the goal."

Mensahe TV footage showed him speaking on a table strewn with red and white flowers before a packed and sweltering crowd.

Islamic State militants who control vast swathes of Iraq and Syria had called on "lone wolves" to attack Qarni and several other Saudi clerics whom they accused of apostasy in the latest issue of Dabiq, their monthly online magazine.

Saudi media outlets described Qarni as a senior Islamic scholar and he has more than 12 million followers on Twitter.

In his book "Awakening Islam," the French academic Stephane Lacroix included Qarni in his list of "the most famous" Saudi preachers.

"As of now, we don't have any conclusions on their group affiliations," Galvez told AFP.

A special police unit investigating the case has asked for a month to determine the affiliation of the suspects, who live on the outskirts of Zamboanga, a southern Philippine port city that is frequently targeted by Islamic extremists.

Qarni was in Zamboanga for a speaking engagement at a state university organised by local Muslim leaders.
#6210

Qarni's police escorts shot the assassin dead. Identification cards found on his body indicated he was a 21-year-old student though police said they were not ruling out forgery.

Two other suspects were arrested at the scene of the shooting.

Investigators are looking at the possibility that the attack was influenced by IS, but there was no evidence to show that yet, said Chief Inspector Helen Galvez, Zamboanga police spokeswoman.
#6211

Qarni, who was on an Islamic State hit list, survived the attack with wounds to his right shoulder, left arm and chest, according to police.

A shocked crowd scampered for safety covering their heads as the shots were fired.

His companion in the car, Saudi Arabia's religious attache to the Philippines, Sheikh Turki Assaegh, was also wounded in the attack.

Saudi cleric's shooting in Philippines captured on TV

AFP
04 March 2016

Manila (AFP) - A failed attempt to assassinate a prominent Saudi cleric in the Philippines was caught on television, showing the hooded assailant firing at the preacher from close range.

The gunman walked toward Sheikh Aaidh al-Qarni's car on Tuesday night as he was leaving a packed auditorium in the southern port city of Zamboanga, where he had given a lecture.

The assailant hid behind a crowd seeking selfies with a smiling Qarni as his vehicle slowly rolled out of the venue, footage on local station Mensahe TV showed.

Complications

ADHD has been linked to:

Poor school performance
Trouble with the law
Problems at work
Alcohol or drug abuse
Frequent car accidents or other accidents
Unstable relationships
Financial stress
Poor physical and mental health

Although ADHD doesn't cause other psychological or developmental conditions, a number of other disorders often occur along with ADHD. These include:

Mood disorders. Many adults with ADHD also have depression, bipolar disorder or another mood disorder. While mood problems aren't necessarily due directly to ADHD, a repeated pattern of failures and frustrations due to ADHD can worsen depression.

Anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorders occur fairly often in adults with ADHD. Anxiety disorder may cause overwhelming worry, nervousness and other symptoms. Anxiety can be made worse by the challenges and setbacks caused by ADHD.

Personality disorders. Adults with ADHD are at increased risk of personality disorders, such as borderline personality disorder or antisocial personality disorder.

Learning disabilities. Adults with ADHD may score lower on academic testing than would be expected for their age, intelligence and education.

Risk factors

You're potentially at increased risk of ADHD if:

You have blood relatives (such as a parent or sibling) with ADHD or another mental health disorder

Your mother smoked, drank alcohol or used drugs during pregnancy

Your mother was exposed to environmental poisons â€" such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) â€" during pregnancy

As a child, you were exposed to environmental toxins â€" such as lead, found mainly in paint and pipes in older buildings

You were born prematurely

Causes

While the exact cause of ADHD is not clear, research efforts continue.

Multiple factors have been implicated in the development of ADHD. It can run in families, and studies indicate that genes may play a role. Certain environmental factors also may increase risk, as can problems with the central nervous system at key moments in development.

When to see a doctor

If inattention, hyperactivity or impulsive behavior continually disrupts your life, talk to your doctor about whether you might have ADHD. Because signs of ADHD are similar to those of a number of other mental health conditions, you may not have ADHD â€" but you may have another condition that needs treatment.

What's normal and what's ADHD?

Almost everyone has some symptoms similar to ADHD at some point in their lives. If your difficulties are recent or occurred only occasionally in the past, you probably don't have ADHD. ADHD is diagnosed only when symptoms are severe enough to cause ongoing problems in more than one area of your life. These persistent and disruptive symptoms can be traced back to early childhood.

Diagnosis of ADHD in adults can be difficult because certain ADHD symptoms are similar to those caused by other conditions, such as anxiety or mood disorders. And many adults with ADHD also have at least one other mental health condition, such as depression or anxiety.

Tira-Pasagad | Saksak-Sinagol / Re: Mental disorder

Many adults with ADHD aren't aware they have it â€" they just know that everyday tasks can be a challenge. Adults with ADHD may find it difficult to focus and prioritize, leading to missed deadlines and forgotten meetings or social plans. The inability to control impulses can range from impatience waiting in line or driving in traffic to mood swings and outbursts of anger.

All adults with ADHD had ADHD as children, even if it was never diagnosed. Some people with ADHD have fewer symptoms as they age, while others continue to have significant symptoms as adults.

Symptoms

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been called attention-deficit disorder (ADD) and hyperactivity. But ADHD is the preferred term because it includes the two main aspects of the condition: inattention and hyperactive-impulsive behavior.

Adult ADHD symptoms may include:

Trouble focusing or concentrating
Restlessness
Impulsivity
Difficulty completing tasks
Disorganization
Low frustration tolerance
Frequent mood swings
Hot temper
Trouble coping with stress
Unstable relationships

Diseases and Conditions
Adult ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)

By Mayo Clinic Staff

Definition

Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health condition exhibited by difficulty maintaining attention, as well as hyperactivity and impulsive behavior. Adult ADHD symptoms can lead to a number of problems, including unstable relationships, poor work or school performance, and low self-esteem.

ADHD always starts in early childhood, but in some cases it's not diagnosed until later in life. It was once thought that ADHD was limited to childhood. But symptoms frequently persist into adulthood. For some people, adult ADHD causes significant problems that improve with treatment.

Treatment for adult ADHD is similar to treatment for childhood ADHD, and includes stimulant drugs or other medications, psychological counseling (psychotherapy), and treatment for any mental health conditions that occur along with adult ADHD.

It may seem strange that stimulants are prescribed for a disorder that sometimes causes hyperactivity but they are effective in many cases. This is thought to be accomplished by coaxing the brain to manufacture more serotonin. Increased serotonin has been shown to have a calming effect. This not only treats the hyperactive symptoms but may allow an adult to focus on their tasks at hand and see them to completion.

As recognition of AADD grows, more studies may lead to new treatments and an increased awareness of the disorder.

As mentioned, treatment options vary depending on the severity of symptoms. For some AADD patients the symptoms are bad enough that medications along with social therapy are prescribed. Some of the more popular prescription medications are Ritalin, Adderall or Vyvanse. Ritalin is the most commonly known medication and is used in the treatment of ADD in children with some success. Adderall is a psychostimulant and Vyvanse (also used for children) is a stimulant as well.

AADD patients are often the types seen by others as not thinking before they speak or act. They are sometimes referred to as a Type A personality or an always on the go individual. While they may seem to be driven, it is noted that they are rarely focused on one task long enough to see it to completion. In a recent study, three different groups of AADD patients all scored much lower than non-AADD adults on a dual memory and simultaneous capacity test, demonstrating their inability to concentrate in such situations. While this may seems like a small step, this recognition helps prove AADD to be a real concern.

March 02, 2016, 05:58:19 PM

ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is similar to AADD but research has shown that one third of the adults affected with AADD do not show any hyperactive behavior. Thus, the medical community has taken to using the AADD term instead.

In the brain of patients with AADD, executive function is impaired. This is the function that governs a person’s ability to monitor their own behavior by organizing and planning. This disorder affects approximately 2 to 4% of adults.

Adult Attention Deficit Disorder: A Real Concern

by Karen Vieira, MBA, PhD

Adult attention deficit disorder or AADD is characterized as a condition causing inattentiveness, organization problems, procrastination and difficulty completing work. It is believed that adults can see an onset of AADD later in life maybe as a carryover from childhood, but in order to receive a diagnosis you must have had symptoms as a child. The condition has differing levels of severity so treatment options vary all the way from coping skills to medication to control the symptoms. Medical intervention will come with some unwanted side effects so many patients opt for social counseling and other less invasive treatment options.

If you guessed that you were looking at the United States, pat yourself on the back. And if you guessed the Midwest, congratulations! This is a view from the International Space Station taken in September 2011. The Northern Lights hover over Canada, while the largest bright spot near the center of the photo is Chicago (You can see Lake Michigan as a big dark spot bordering the city). The spidery-looking city below and to the right of Chicago is St. Louis. Way to the left of St. Louis is a small clump of lights: That's Des Moines, with Minneapolis-St. Paul above and to the left of it. The large blur of lights in the lower left-hand corner of the photo is Omaha, Nebraska.

The astronaut who snapped this photo also captured a weather event. Look above St. Louis and the dark, winding spot that is the little-populated Appalachian Mountains. You'll see a bright, almost bluish dot. That dot is almost certainly lightning from a storm on the East Coast.

In August 2006, a NASA satellite captured this image of three angry sisters in the western Pacific Ocean. This trio of storms formed within three days of each other. The youngest storm, Typhoon Bopha (top) is barely organized into a tropical storm, with no eye and only the most basic round shape. Tropical Storm Maria (bottom right) is a day older and has formed a central eye and a spiral shape. The most powerful of the triplets, Typhoon Saomai (bottom left) is fully formed and roaring with winds around 85 miles per hour (140 kilometers per hour).

"The survivability ... because of the missiles, when we did the lay down and the plan, the capabilities that our potential adversaries had didn't exist," he said. "So do we need to take a look at how we are going to harden ourselves, or where we are going to position ourselves?"

On Thursday, Harris said the recent developments on the man-made islands would not stop the Navy from deploying an aircraft carrier to the South China Sea.

"Short of war, I'm aware of the threat. I'll pay attention to the threat," he said. "But that is not going to prevent us from flying, sailing or operating wherever international law allows."

www.military.com/

China has completed three 10,000-foot runways and dispatched advanced attack aircraft and bomber aircraft to the islands. In recent weeks, it has also installed advanced surface-to-surface missiles and radar systems that could make US aircraft carriers more vulnerable.

"The DF-21 [anti-ship ballistic missile], which they have developed, and the DF-26 [intermediate range ballistic missile], which they're developing, could pose a threat to our carriers," Harris told the Senate Armed Services Committee this week. "I think, though, that our carriers are resilient and we have the capability to do what has to be done if it comes to that."

Neller said China's movements have the Marines also rethinking its posture in the Pacific.
#6254

The weapons that China is placing on those islands could require the United States to reconsider its own presence in the region, Richardson and Neller said Friday at an event hosted by the Brookings Institution, public policy research group in Washington, D.C. The Navy already wants to have 60 percent of its planned fleet of 308 US warships committed to the Pacific by 2020.

For example, Richardson said China's advances might require the United States to reassess its attack submarine fleet. The Navy has said for years that 48 attack submarines is what it needs to carry out its mission. But Richardson said Friday that might not be enough.

"That number is really based on analysis from 2006," he said. With China's recent developments, "that's becoming a more urgent situation."
#6255

During his testimony this week on Capitol Hill, Harris, commander of the Pacific Command, cautioned China has swiftly moved jets, missiles, bombers and radars onto many of the man-made islands that it built during the last year. China developed the islands by building on top of submerged coral reefs and other underwater land features in the South China Sea.

"These are actions that are changing, in my opinion, the operational landscape in the South China Sea," Harris told lawmakers.

China's Military Buildup in Pacific Could Require US Response

Stars and Stripes | Feb 27, 2016 | by Tara Copp

WASHINGTON -- Navy and Marine Corps leaders warned Friday that China's rapid military buildup in the Pacific Ocean could force the United States to move ships and forces in response.

Friday's comments from Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus and Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Robert Neller followed a week of warnings by Adm. Harry Harris to Congress that the pace of China's militarization on a string of man-made islands in the South China Sea is changing operations in the Pacific.

Another difference is that an egoist is more selfish than an egotist. Though boastful, an egotist may not be selfish at all. An egoist may be described as a selfish person and an egotist as a self-centered person.

Summary:

When it comes to their characters, an egoist is more cunning than an egotist. Unlike an egoist, an egotist will try to get what he wants by any means possible. It is not the way, be it straightforward or devious, which matters to an egotist but the achievement of hsi goal. He will try to achieve what he has in mind in any way he can.

An egotist is a boaster, who goes around bragging about himself even if doing so causes him problems. An egoist, on the contrary, does not boast. An egoist may even talk less if he thinks doing so is going to adversely affect him. An egotist does not think of the consequences, while an egoist evaluates the pros and cons of all his actions.

for curiosity's sake...

egoism versus egotism

Difference Between Egoist and Egotist

Though the two words ‘” egoist and egotist’” look similar, they are different in meaning and also in many characteristics.

An egotist is a person who is interested in ‘I’ and only talks about himself. He always tries to see to it that all conversation revolves around him. On the other hand, an egoist believes that he is better and more important than anyone else.

While an egotist talks only about himself and may talk a lot, an egoist is a person who may not talk much about himself but who thinks he is far superior to everyone else.

The controversial star did not forget the less fortunate on her Philippine trip, however, tweeting photos showing her visiting children at a Manila orphanage run by nuns.

The star, now touring in Singapore, has yet to comment publicly on the flag furore.

Officials of Music Management International, which produced Madonna's Manila concert, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

From AFP Via Yahoo! News

'Pinoys (Filipinos) and all God-loving people should avoid sin and occasions of sin,' Archbishop Ramon Arguelles said in a statement posted on the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines' official website.

Arguelles said the concerts, Madonna's first in the Philippines, were among 'subtle attacks of the evil one'.

During her Manila shows Madonna gyrated around a stripper pole shaped like a crucifix, accompanied by dancers dressed as scantily clad nuns.

A 1998 law prescribes a one-year jail term, as well as a token fine, for wearing the Philippine flag 'in whole or in part as a costume or uniform'.

The flag flap was the second controversy provoked by Madonna's visit to the devoutly Catholic Asian nation.

A Catholic bishop last week called on the faithful to stay away from Madonna's sexually charged concerts, which often encompass religious themes, calling them the devil's work.

'This should he made clear to organisers and performers in concerts so that there will be no repetition of the incident.'

Coloma said in an earlier statement to AFP that the government was 'keen' on banning the Queen of Pop from performing in the Philippines because of the controversy.

However Coloma later said the government did not want to ban her, and that the initial statement that it did was based on a wrong interpretation of comments by another presidential aide.

Philippines hits out at Madonna over flag stunt

Sunday, 28 February 2016

The Philippines criticised Madonna on Sunday for disrespecting its flag during a concert in Manila, and said it would call on organisers of future events to avoid similar incidents.

Photos from one of her two concerts last week published in local media showed the 57-year-old American mega-star draped in the Philippine flag.

While press reports said the audience roared its approval at the music icon, who was in the country as part of her global 'Rebel Heart' tour, Filipino authorities were less amused.

'Our flag law is strict as we want to instill respect for the Philippine flag,' presidential spokesman Herminio Coloma said in a statement.

Jemaah Islamiyah militants carried out the 2002 bombings on Indonesia's holiday island of Bali, which killed 202 people. The group has long had a presence in the southern Philippines.

MILF leaders have warned in recent weeks that the collapse of the peace deal could embolden hardline militants who want to resume a violent separatist uprising.

Security analysts have also warned some Islamic militants in the Philippines may want to follow the more extreme violent tactics of the Islamic State group.

#6281

This week's fighting took place in a region bordering a stronghold of a powerful MILF commander.

But military officials said MILF did not take part in this week's clashes.

They said the group involved in the clashes was led by followers of Indonesian Ustadz Sanusi, a member of the Jemaah Islamiyah who was killed in the southern Philippines in 2012.

Decades of violence

A Muslim separatist insurgency has raged for more than four decades on Mindanao and other parts of the southern Philippines, leaving more than 120,000 people dead.

Efforts to secure a peace deal with the largest rebel group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), recently collapsed after congress failed to pass a law that would have created an autonomous Muslim region in Mindanao.

The collapse of the previous peace process in 2008 led hardline MILF commanders to launch attacks on Christian villages in Mindanao, which killed more than 400 people and displaced 600,000.
#6283

The fighting took place in and around Butig, a small Muslim-populated town surrounded by heavily forested mountains. One two-storey house was in ruins and many others were riddled with bullets, according to the local reporter.

More than 20,000 people had fled their homes, taking refuge in a mosque, government evacuation centres and with relatives, according to civil defence officials.
#6284

However a local reporter on the scene said clashes continued throughout Friday.

Up to 61 militants were believed to have been killed, although only three bodies had been recovered, according to the military chief with responsibility for the area, Colonel Roseller Murillo.

Murillo and other military officials said they had no firm evidence to confirm the other 58 reported deaths, and would not say how they came up with the number other than that they relied on intelligence reports.
#6285

"There was attack and counter-attack, sniping and counter-sniping, and artillery fire," military spokesman Colonel Noel Detoyato told AFP, describing the fighting that began on Saturday with an attack on a military post.

The military said the group's base, a concrete building on the outskirts of a remote town in a mountainous region of violence-racked Mindanao island, had been overrun on Thursday night following helicopter gunship attacks.

Thousands flee deadly fighting in southern Philippines

AFP/ 15 hours ago (27 February 2016)

At least six people have been killed and more than 20,000 displaced during a week of fighting between Islamic militants and security forces in the southern Philippines, authorities said Friday.

Three soldiers and three militants were confirmed killed in the clashes, which involved followers of a slain Indonesian leader of a Southeast Asian militant group, the military said.

"There are -- there are many other components of national power that can be and probably will be brought to bear in this."

Harris noted that the U.S. maintains a continuous presence of naval ships in the South China Sea and flies regular surveillance patrols in the region as well. "So, we're there all the time, I would say."

"We must exercise our freedom of navigation, or we risk losing it."

http://www.cnsnews.com/
#6288

"But you're not stopping China from militarizing these islands," a reporter told Harris.

"Well, you'd have to ask China why they're not stopping," Harris responded. "I mean, the military component is just one tool in the -- in the tool chest that our national leadership has, so, you know, I think we're doing what we have to do in the military sense.

Admiral Harry Harris, head of US Pacific Command
#6289

Harris said the U.S. will continue to "exercise our rights of freedom of navigation in international waters and airspace, and encourage others -- encourage that like-minded network of nations to do the same.

"And I think we must use diplomacy to influence China. And finally, we have to ensure that we continue to modernize that (U.S. military) force, in order to go back to the first element of maintaining a credible combat power."
#6290

"I am of the opinion that they are militarizing the South China Sea," Harris said. "And when they add their advanced fighters to Woody Island, and when -- up in the Paracels -- and when they put their advanced missile systems on the Paracels, and when they build three 10,000-foot runways in the Spratlys on the basis that they've reclaimed -- when they do all of that, they're changing the operational landscape in the South China Sea.

"So, that is what has changed. The United States and our patrols -- military patrols, air and maritime in the South China Sea haven't really changed. We have a consistent presence in the Western Pacific, and we have had that for decades. So, I would say it's China that has changed its behavior."
#6291

"And I think that, again, short of war with the United States, China will exercise de facto control of the South China Sea, if they are -- if they continue to outfit the bases that they've reclaimed there."

Harris said China, in the past few years, has reclaimed almost 3,000 acres of land from the South China Sea, turning many of the islands into military bases.
#6292

"And short of war with the United States, they can become -- they can rise to the level of having operational control, tactical control of the waterways and airways in the South China Sea, which today, involves about $5.3 trillion of trade, over a billion of which -- over a trillion of which is destined for the United States.

"There are enormous I.T. infrastructure in the...undersea cables in the South China Sea. It's a principle shipping lane, as we've discussed.
