Last week one newspaper described a murder case involving the flamboyant scion of one of India’s biggest financial companies as a reminder of “how fast all the glitter can fade in a capricious manner at weird spots of destiny”.

The attention focused on the Mukerjea investigations recalls the frenzy prompted by the jailing of two dentists for the murder of their 14-year-old daughter, Aarushi, and a male housekeeper in 2008. They maintain their innocence, and were backed by large numbers of independent experts and commentators.

Avirook Sen, author of an acclaimed book on the case, said it shared common ingredients with the Mukerjea affair.

“The murder of Aarushi occurred in a suburb that was a kind of middle-class idyll or dream. That kind of thing was not supposed to happen there. And though [the victim] was just into puberty she was young and pretty.”

The case also featured accusations of poor police work and prejudicial reporting. Unsubstantiated details of the teenager’s sexual activity, and the father’s supposed jealousy, were supposedly leaked by police to journalists during the investigation.

Sundaram, the media consultant, pointed out that such subject matter attracted attention all over the world.

“Yes, there is something in the [Mukerjea] story which is about the new India but it is also universal.”
#6203
The Mukerjeas lived in one of Mumbai’s most exclusive areas and were a fixture of the city’s glitzy social scene. As business affairs soured the couple spent more time overseas, particularly in the UK. In 2011, Bora, by then an adult, got a job in another of India’s proliferating media companies in Mumbai.

Every facet of Bora’s personal life has been pored over in recent weeks, with newspapers publishing her diaries and reporters climbing over the walls of her childhood home to interview relatives.

Chandita Sahariah, a school friend in the city of Guwahati, described the dead woman as a “beautiful and bright student”.

“Her personal problems didn’t reflect in her personality, she used to carry her mum’s passport photo all the time. She loved her mum,” Sahariah, 27, said.

In 2012, Bora, who may have been in a relationship with the son of her mother’s second husband, disappeared. An investigation was launched this summer after police in Mumbai received a tip-off and Indrani Mukerjea’s chauffeur reportedly claimed he had been paid 100,000 rupees (£1,000) to help in the murder of the young woman.

Police have been unable to establish any motive for the killing and Indrani Mukerjea maintains her daughter went to the US to study, as the children of many wealthy Indians do, and disappeared there. There is no suggestion that Peter Mukerjea was involved in or aware of any wrongdoing at any stage.

One possible explanation for India’s fascination with stories of salacious crimes involving the rich and the famous is that they reassure those disorientated or disadvantaged by rapid economic and cultural change. All involve individuals who, though they appear to be among the winners in contemporary India, are losers in the long run.
#6204
There has been some criticism of the intense media coverage. Television debates have seen virulent attacks on Mukerjea’s alleged betrayal of her role as a mother.

But soaring ratings have trumped most reservations. “It is a tabloid gold mine,” said Rajesh Sundaram, an Indian media consultant who once worked for Mukerjea.

The tycoon grew up far from the booming cities of Delhi, India’s capital, and Mumbai, its commercial powerhouse. She was born to a middle-class family in the north-east state of Assam but, like many, sought escape from the provinces. Local media has portrayed her as “a ruthless social climber”, recounting unconfirmed anecdotes of pushy materialism. A few describe a vivacious, ambitious, sharp-witted entrepreneur who launched a successful human resources company in what is still a patriarchal and conservative country, and in 2008 was named one of 50 “Women to Watch” by the Wall Street Journal.

It is Mukerjea’s personal life that has attracted most attention, and condemnation. Two of her children â€" Sheena and a son â€" came from a first relationship in her twenties. Later Mukerjea married a “member of [the] swish set” in Kolkata and gained access to the eastern city’s “upper crust”, according to local reports. By 2002, however, that relationship had broken up and she met and then married her current husband, 59-year-old Peter Mukerjea, a well-known and respected Mumbai-based media tycoon. In 2006 the couple set up a TV network.

Rags-to-riches-to-remand story of Indrani Mukerjea is seen as moral fable about materialism, media and motherhood

The story has gripped India for weeks. Each new development prompts a surge of headlines. Every quote tops the TV bulletins. Even in a country which loves a good true crime story, the case is a sensational exception.

The facts appear straightforward. Indrani Mukerjea, India’s first female TV mogul, has been charged with the murder of her 25-year-old daughter, Sheena Bora, whose remains were found on wasteland three years ago but only identified recently. Police have said her two alleged accomplices have confessed, though there is no independent confirmation of this. From prison, Mukerjea maintains her innocence.

Yet the case is about much more than a simple murder investigation. Mukerjea’s rags-to-riches-to-remand story is being seen as a moral fable, underlining deep concerns about materialism, the media and motherhood in the emerging economic power.

“Here is a story about change, and those who embrace it for all the wrong reasons,” wrote commentator Dilip Bobb in Outlook magazine. “It is a story about the rich and how money and craving for high social status can distort values … [Mukerjea] is the female equivalent of Jay Gatsby, the mysterious millionaire of Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, which explored themes of decadence, social upheaval and excess.”

The Queen doesn’t even want to celebrate her long reign. She just wants to keep reigning.

“She has let it be known with some emphasis that she does not want a fuss to be made,” the BBC elegantly explained. “It is evidently viewed as bad form for one long-lived queen to be seen in any way to be celebrating the passing of a record set by another long-lived queen.”

Meanwhile, the public certainly doesn’t seem to want Camilla, Charles’s second wife, as queen. Just 34 percent of 2,000 Britons surveyed earlier this year in a Daily Mail poll had a positive view of her.

“These are shocking figures for Charles PR machine to contemplate after a decade of assiduously attempting via every trick in the book to soften Camilla’s image and encourage the populace to warm to her,” Sykes of the Daily Beast wrote.

Elizabeth, however, is a near-nonagenarian. Sometime â€" likely not in the too-far-distant future â€" Charles will have to decide: Does he want to be king, or doesn’t he?

“Yes,” Mayer said. “Does he want his mother to stand down? No.”
#6220
Maybe not. Last year, the Guardian reported that Charles was planning to reinvent the throne if he ever got to sit on it.

“Prince Charles is ready to reshape the monarch’s role when he becomes king and make ‘heartfelt interventions’ in national life in contrast to the Queen’s taciturn discretion on public affairs, his allies have said,” the paper wrote. “In signs of an emerging strategy that could risk carrying over the controversy about his alleged meddling in politics into his kingship, sources close to the heir say he is set to continue to express concerns and ask questions about issues that matter to him, such as the future of farming and the environment, partly because he believes he has a duty to relay public opinion to those in power.”

Indeed, the release of the “black spider memos” â€" correspondence from the prince, known for his trademark scrawl â€" in May revealed exchanges with Tony Blair, among other political figures, some thought meddling. If Charles is supposed to be a figurehead, he might not be that good at playing statue.

For the prince, holding his tongue might not be the biggest problem. A more difficult question: Does the public still want him? Some Britishers seem to prefer a younger, sexier monarch.

“While seven in ten Britons think Britain should remain a monarchy, many British people still believe Prince Charles should make way for Prince William as the next monarch,” Tom Sykes of the Daily Beast wrote in “King Charles: The Monarch Nobody Wants.” “40% of Britons say Prince Charles should give up his right to be the next king in favor of his son.”

Abdication, however, is complicated. Theoretically, Elizabeth could give up the throne anytime, perhaps easing the transition for Charles. But only one British monarch â€" Elizabeth’s uncle Edward, in 1936 â€" has stepped down, and rumors of abdication in the past have proven groundless.
#6221
Charles â€" the United Kingdom’s longest-waiting heir who, if his mother dies, will also be oldest to assume the throne â€" seemed to be joking, but … was he joking? There have been reports to the contrary.

“[I ] remember the time he visited a Brixton youth club in the 1980s,” John Rentoul of the Independent wrote. “One youth, delighted to see him, exclaimed, ‘You gonna be king, man, you gonna be king!’ Charles replied drily, ‘That’s the general idea.'”

While it’s easy to make always-a-bridesmaid jokes at Charles’s expense, they may be off the mark.

“The idea that he would not be king is not something that has entered his mind,” Catherine Mayer, the author of “The Heart of a King,” a controversial book about Charles, told The Washington Post in a phone interview. “The idea that it would not happen in the normal course of events is alien to him.”

Still, the prince is a noted philanthropist, a vegetarian outspoken on issues such as climate change. This isn’t necessarily the royal way, and taking the throne might stifle him. In 2013, for example, Mayer reported Charles referred to the responsibilities of a monarch as “prison shades” â€" a quote Buckingham Palace disputed.

“It’s a well established constitutional fact that the Monarch must remain neutral in all matters,” royal-watchers Royal Central wrote in 2013.”The Queen has managed this flawlessly, though will the Prince’s desire to help and promote change for the better cause issue with this?”

By Justin Wm. Moyer September 9 at 6:06 AM

England’s Prince Charles started not being the king when he was born: Nov. 14, 1948. He continued not being the king when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, became Britain’s monarch on Feb. 6, 1952.

As his mother’s reign entered its fifth, sixth and seventh decade, he remained merely the Prince of Wales. And, when Elizabeth becomes the longest-serving British monarch at about 12:30 p.m. EST, her 66-year-old son will still be waiting in the wings.

It’s tough to want a job when getting it requires that your 89-year-old mother shuffle off this mortal coil. “If it comes to it, regrettably it comes as a result of the death of your parent,” Charles once said.

But the prince has shown a few signs of impatience.

“Impatient?” Charles said in 2012. “Me? What a thing to suggest! Yes, of course I am … I’ll run out of time soon. I shall have snuffed it if I’m not careful.”

While investigating an outbreak of Simian hemorrhagic fever (SHFV) in November 1989, an electron microscopist from USAMRIID named Thomas W. Geisbert discovered filoviruses similar in appearance to Ebola virus in tissue samples taken from Crab-eating Macaque imported from the Philippines to Hazleton Laboratories in Reston, Virginia. The filovirus was further isolated by Dr. Peter B. Jahrling, and over the period of three months over a third of the monkeys diedâ€"at a rate of two or three a day.

Blood samples were taken from 178 animal handlers during the incident. Of them, six eventually seroconverted, testing positive using ELISA. They remained, however, asymptomatic. In January 1990, an animal handler at Hazelton cut himself while performing a necropsy on the liver of an infected Cynomolgus. Under the direction of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the animal handler was placed under surveillance for the duration of the incubation period. When the animal handler failed to become ill, it was concluded that the virus had a low pathogenicity in humans. --Wiki

Cynomolgus, or Crab-eating Macaques, imported from the Philippines, were found to be carrying the filovirus.

MANILA - The Department of Health (DOH) will hold a press conference Thursday to confirm the outbreak of the Ebola Reston virus among monkeys in the Philippines.

"We don't call it a crisis. We call it outbreak in so far as monkeys is concerned," Health Secretary Janette Garin said Wednesday.

"Definitely ito po ay nasa monkeys. We're just tracing any other information. Itong klase ng Ebola ang pinakamabait sa tao," she added.

(READ: Monkeys in PH facilities test positive for Ebola Reston virus)

She said the handlers of the monkeys are being given adequate protection. Garin declined to give details except to say this is limited to three areas.

DOH spokesperson Dr. Lyndon Lee Suy also assured that the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) was able to isolate the virus.

He explained they took it upon themselves to inform the public about Ebola Reston to avoid any confusion with the deadly Ebola virus now in Africa.

"No risk at all. Data would tell us while people are exposed, none of them developed illness because of Ebola Reston," he said.

Book Reviews / Re: Black Earth
September 09, 2015, 04:16:48 PM
That effort took on a more urgent dimension during the 2014 Ukraine crisis, when Mr. Snyder, a frequent contributor to The New York Review of Books, emerged as a leading interpreter and champion of the country’s pro-European revolution. His impassioned advocacy has made him a hero to many in Ukraine, where he and Mr. Wieseltier convened a conference of leading European and American intellectuals in May 2014, two months after the Russian annexation of Crimea, as a show of solidarity.

But Mr. Snyder is hardly universally celebrated in Eastern Europe. He has come under fire in a number of countries, including Ukraine, he notes, for challenging what he calls the “exaggerated” death tolls from Soviet crimes offered by some government-sanctioned scholars, among other challenges to nationalist history.

As for those on the American left who have accused him of glossing over far-right elements in the Ukrainian revolution, Mr. Snyder attributes the underlying claim to a Russian misinformation campaign that painted protesters on Maidan Square in Kiev as the heirs of National Socialism.

Too many Western intellectuals, Mr. Snyder said, “got pushed around by a really effective propaganda apparatus while a good deal of architecture of European peace and prosperity got taken down.”

In the conclusion of “Black Earth,” Mr. Snyder reiterates the central importance of Ukraine, arguing that Mr. Putin’s annexation of Crimea and depiction of Ukraine as “an artificial entity” backed by “Jews, gays, Europeans and Americans” carries dangerous echoes of Hitler in the late 1930s.

But Mr. Snyder also offers a wider-angled warning, arguing, in language verging on the prophetic, that political actors in any number of places â€" China, the Middle East, Africa â€" might blame very real environmental crises on imaginary global enemies, possibly setting the stage for another Holocaust. (He also has harsh words for those on the American right who “fantasize about destroying governments.”) To colleagues who might caution against speculating about the future when the past itself is hard enough to understand, Mr. Snyder offered a pre-emptive riposte.

“It’s easy for historians to say, ‘It’s not our job to write the future,’ ” he said. “Yes, right. But then whose job is it?”

Paradoxically, he continued, while Germans were “the most responsible by far” for the Holocaust, Germany is generally viewed as having a complexity and variety not as readily granted to Eastern European nations.

“Everyone accepts that Germany is a real place with a real society and a real culture,” he said. “With Poland, with Lithuania, with Hungary, that’s much less true. Knowledge of those places is much less widespread.”

Mr. Snyder, who is married to Marci Shore, a fellow East European historian at Yale, dates his passion for the region to his undergraduate years at Brown University, when he watched the post-1989 revolutions with fascination. “I took what was going on totally literally and seriously and personally,” he said.

Colleagues credit Mr. Snyder with insistently bringing East European voices from the margins to the center of the broader academic and political conversation, a mission he shared with his mentor and friend Tony Judt, who died in 2010.

“The work he’s done to bring research from the region to English-speaking audiences has been tremendous,” said Paul Hanebrink, an associate professor at Rutgers University who is working on a book about anti-Semitism in Eastern Europe.

The historian Omer Bartov, reviewing “Bloodlands” in the journal Slavic Review, put it bluntly, saying the book was “permeated by a persistent pro-Polish bias,” and failed to account for “the willing collaboration of thousands of locals who proclaimed the cleansing of their land of Jews as a national duty.”

Some early reviews of “Black Earth” have lodged similar criticisms. Writing in The National Interest, the historian David A. Bell said that Mr. Snyder highlights efforts by non-Communist Poles to resist the Nazis and help Jews while arguing â€" with little empirical support, in Mr. Bell’s view â€" that those East Europeans who helped carry out the Holocaust were disproportionately former Communist collaborators looking to shift blame for their own behavior onto Jews.

The result, Mr. Bell said in an interview, is a “strange imbalance.”

“There’s a very strong focus again and again on former Communists and on the actions of the former Soviet Union, which were obviously absolutely horrific,” Mr. Bell said. “But what ultimately saved those Jews who survived was the Red Army.”

When asked about the role of popular anti-Semitism, Mr. Snyder, who is a member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Committee on Conscience, reiterated his belief that animus toward Jews, while widespread in prewar Poland and elsewhere, simply does not explain how the Nazi genocide started, the forms it took or who participated.

“There are arguments in this book that are clearly not my effort to win a popularity contest,” he added dryly.

And he sharply challenged the charge of bias. If anything, he said, scholarship of the Holocaust has been too dominated by German-language sources and by an “ethnic shorthand,” itself traceable to the Nazis, that obscures more than it illuminates.

“Our shorthand for talking about this stuff has been Poles and Jews, Germans and Jews,” Mr. Snyder said. “I think it should be states, institutions, micro-level sociological explanations, economic behavior.”

Mr. Snyder has already been credited with powerfully reframing the darkest chapter of the 20th century. “Bloodlands” situated the Holocaust in the context of the 14 million civilians, by Mr. Snyder’s count, who were murdered or deliberately starved in the contested territory between the Baltics and the Black Sea from 1933 to 1945, thus putting an event often sealed off in quasi-mystical uniqueness squarely in historical context. Translated into more than 25 languages, the book stirred multiple debates in multiple countries, perhaps most intensely in Eastern Europe, where it has figured in highly politicized arguments about collaboration, national suffering and how to weigh the crimes of Hitler against those of Stalin.

“Black Earth,” whose American edition arrives with ringing endorsements from Henry A. Kissinger, Zbigniew Brzezinski and Leon Wieseltier, among others, seems poised to generate a fresh round of argument, in scholarly circles and beyond.

“I don’t agree with everything in ‘Black Earth,’ ” said Deborah Lipstadt, a historian of the Holocaust at Emory University who also wrote a blurb for Mr. Snyder’s book. “But he’s such a bold and serious and incisive thinker and writer, he makes me go back and reassess what I think I’m sure of.”

“Black Earth” presents a complicated braid of arguments, building on ideas already present in “Bloodlands.” Reviewers have already begun picking apart one of Mr. Snyder’s central, and most counterintuitive, claims: that the Holocaust depended crucially not on Hitler’s creation of an all-powerful German state but on his determination to create zones of statelessness in the territories he conquered, thus clearing the way for slaughter.

However, among Mr. Snyder’s English-language readers, perhaps no subject has been more fraught than his treatment of popular anti-Semitism in Eastern Europe, which some scholars have said he plays down as a causal factor in the Holocaust.

Timothy Snyder’s ‘Black Earth’ Puts Holocaust, and Himself, in Spotlight
By JENNIFER SCHUESSLER
http://www.nytimes.com/
SEPT. 7, 2015

NEW HAVEN â€" When Timothy Snyder’s book “Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin” was published in 2010, it quickly established its author as one of the leading historians of his generation, a scholar who combined formidable linguistic skills â€" he reads or speaks 11 languages â€" with an elegant literary style, white-hot moral passion and a willingness to start arguments about some of the most fraught questions of the recent past.

It also established Mr. Snyder, 46, as a rising public intellectual unafraid to make bold connections between past and present, most notably in his full-throated defense of Ukraine in the face of what he has called Russian president Vladimir V. Putin’s “assault on European history.”

Those two sides of Mr. Snyder’s work are fused in his new book, “Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning.” Here, Mr. Snyder aims to offer a radically new explanation of the Nazi genocide grounded in Hitler’s belief in a global ecological crisis caused by the Jews, while also sounding an alarm about how our own era of environmental disruption could lead to similar orgies of violence.

“Black Earth,” published on Tuesday by Tim Duggan Books, arrives at a moment when the images of desperate refugees crowding European train stations carry painful echoes of the World War II era. But the story he tells also cuts against some widely held beliefs about the Holocaust, and that’s Mr. Snyder’s intention, too.

“I worry that the history of the Holocaust, even as it’s become more widely acknowledged as important, has also lost some of its sharpness,” Mr. Snyder said during an interview in his office here at Yale, where he has taught since 2001.

“It’s become much less about causes, and much more about pictures and remembering and honoring,” he continued. “What honoring leads to is a lot of respectful silence. That has its place, but it doesn’t generate knowledge.”

An ancient analogue

The Antarctic lake could thus provide a "natural laboratory" for studying the signatures of local oxygen pockets, the researchers reported Aug. 21 in the journal Geology. Geoscientists could then look for those same signatures in ancient rocks, perhaps those dating to before the oxidation event.

For now, the researchers plan to study how these local oxygen oases affect the anoxic water around them, as well as the sediments in the lake.

Oxygen surprise

Sumner and her colleagues discovered the oxygen oasis "a little by accident," she said. The team was diving in Lake Fryxell, a 2.8-mile-long (4.5 kilometers) frozen-over lake in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. Like other lakes in the region, Lake Fryxell has oxygenated layers up top, but becomes anoxic deeper down. [See Photos of a Subglacial Lake in Antarctica]

Unlike other lakes in the region, its anoxic layers begin at depths where sunlight still penetrates. (Typically, in sunlit layers, photosynthesizing organisms spit out oxygen as part of their respiration.)

Ian Hawes, a researcher at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, was diving with UC Davis graduate student Tyler Mackey, when the pair noticed green mats of cyanobacteria, a type of bacteria that use photosynthesis to survive. They found that the bacteria were generating a layer of oxygen 0.08 inches (2 millimeters) thick in the otherwise oxygen-free water.

A view of Lake Fryxell in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, where the surface ice never melts. New research finds that oxygen-generating bacteria live in the depths of these lakes, where the waters are mostly oxygen-free.

A little oxygenated slice of paradise survives deep in an icy Antarctic lake, providing a window into what life on Earth may have been like before oxygen permeated the atmosphere.

Earth's atmosphere was relatively oxygen-free until about 2.4 billion years ago, when photosynthetic bacteria started pumping out oxygen as a waste product in the process of transforming sunlight into energy. This "Great Oxidation Event" reflects the point at which oxygen became widespread, but researchers now think photosynthetic bacteria evolved at least half a billion years earlier. However, the details of the transition from a low- to high-oxygen environment remain mysterious.

One possibility is that oxygen was locally prominent in some spots by 2.8 billion years ago â€" millions of years before it went global. If so, these oxygen pockets probably looked like the newly discovered oxygen hotspot in Antarctica.

"The thought is that the lakes and rivers were anoxic [oxygen-free], but there was light available, and little bits of oxygen could accumulate," study researcher Dawn Sumner, an earth scientist at the University of California, Davis, said in a statement.

This weakening is especially troubling since the government has started pulling out all the stops to keep money flowing through the economy. Rate cuts, reserve cuts, supporting the stock market, loosening housing-market policy â€" it's all being done, and there will likely be more before the year is out.

The problem is that so far this stimulus doesn't seem to be jump-starting the economy. Caixin's survey showed employment in the services sector growing at only a "marginal rate," Orlik pointed out.

In other words, the best hope for growth in China's economy is starting to fade.

The unofficial read of Old China was even worse, the Caixin manufacturing PMI came in at 47.3, its lowest read since 2009.

Old China was expected to decline, but not this fast. A flash reading of South Korean export data released on Tuesday showed the country's sales falling by 14.7%. It's far more than analysts expected and significant because China and South Korea's export numbers move together.

This wouldn't be so bad if it weren't combined with the August read of New China. According to the data, China's services sector is barely holding on to growth.

"The official non-manufacturing PMI and Caixin services PMI also fell, though holding above the 50 mark that separates improving from deteriorating conditions," wrote Bloomberg economist Tom Orlik in a note following the release.

"The relative resilience of China’s services sector remains a positive, though the latest signs suggest the slowdown is becoming more broad-based."

Think of China's economy as having two parts, New China and Old China.

Old China is made up of manufacturers, exporters, property developers, and foreign investment.

New China is a growing services sector â€" technology, banking, retail, and other
domestic consumption.

New China needs to grow as fast as Old China is shrinking, if the country's going to avoid the hard economic landing everyone's been worried about for years.

But that's not what's happening.

On Monday night, China released its official and unofficial Purchasing Managers Index data for August. The official PMI, which includes Old China, fell to a dismal 49.7 â€" any read under 50 indicates a contraction in the sector.

Grandiosity refers to an unrealistic sense of superiorityâ€"-a sustained view of oneself as better than others that causes the narcissist to view others with disdain or as inferiorâ€"-as well as to a sense of uniqueness: the belief that few others have anything in common with oneself and that one can only be understood by a few or very special people.

Tokyo (AFP) - Japan's top lavatories have received a government award for their spotless appearance in a hard-fought contest among the nation's prettiest and most practical toilets.

A panel including architects and an official from the Japan Toilet Association sifted through nearly 400 applications before settling on two dozen municipalities and companies with the loveliest latrines.

The criteria for the inaugural award were cleanliness, safety, comfort, novelty/creativity, and sustainability.

The range of winners included firms that created makeshift toilets after Japan's 2011 quake-tsunami disaster, Haneda airport for its spotless restrooms, and the organisers of a toilet-themed art festival.

Others got the nod for making female restrooms more attractive, including supplying space for breast-feeding and shortening waiting lines.

Toilets in Japan have been raised to something of an art and foreign visitors are regularly wowed by their seat warmers and pinpoint bidet jets.

But the government insists the award was more than just a beauty contest -- it was about empowering women.

"Pleasant restrooms will improve the quality of daily life and encourage women’s empowerment," Haruko Arimura, minister in charge of women's empowerment, told an awards ceremony on Friday.

"Having public toilets where women feel safe is a sign of the maturity and richness of a society."

That idea was panned on social media.

"I cannot believe the government has created the toilet award. Are restrooms the reason why Japanese women cannot shine?" said one Twitter user.

Another added: "The government is missing the point. They should work more on issues such as the lack of childcare facilities."

Much of Karadzic’s poetry often had warlike themes, with titles like “A Morning Hand Grenade,” “Assassins,” and “A Man Made of Ashes and War Boots.” But they also betrayed the dictator’s flair for self-pity:

I surmise the sun is wounding me
With its sharp malignant rays
I surmise the stars are healing me
I am the deity of dark cosmic space
A horned cow reveals a faithless goddess
Everything’s turned against me the one true god
I created the world to tear my head off
Judges torture me for insignificant acts
I am disgusted by the souls who radiate nothing
Like a small nasty puppy puny death
Is approaching from afar
I don’t know what to make of all these things
But I can’t stand the sight of you you file of scum
You file of snails
Well hurry up in your slime

After Karadzic’s capture in 2009, the Slovakian PEN Centre, part of PEN International, ethically criticized Slovakian magazine Dotyky for publishing his poetry without editorial comment. The editor defended the decision, saying simply that the poems were high-quality, but it set off a debate about free speech in publishing the works of a man known for inciting ethnic hatred. Andrew Rubin described the work as “a psychic landscape of eerie and illogical violence,” while Jay Surdukowski asserted that Karadzic saw himself as a poet-warrior. Surdukowski also argued in 2005 that the poetry itself could be admissible as evidence in a war crimes tribunal. -- http://listverse.com/

Tojo was the Prime Minister of Japan during World War II and ordered the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was also responsible for orchestrating the Second Sino-Japanese War.

In 1945, Tojo attempted suicide to avoid capture by the American military police. He was later found guilty of war crimes by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East and was sentenced to death. After being captured by the American army, he murmured "I am very sorry it is taking me so long to die."

Beijing will commemorate the 70th anniversary of victory over Japan and the end of World War II with a huge military parade through Tiananmen Square on 3 September.

The internet is divided over the Tojo-themed ice-cream. Some social media users have found the ice cream to be in poor taste while others are okay about it.

Lifestyle, Culture and Arts / Cheraw dance of Mizoram
September 06, 2015, 05:37:17 PM

Cheraw: Cheraw is a very old traditional dance of the Mizos. It is believed that the dance had already existed way back in the 1st Century A.D., while the Mizos were still somewhere in the Yunan Province of China, before their migration into the Chin Hills in the 13th Century A.D., and eventually to the present Mizoram. Some of the tribes living in South East Asia have similar dances in one form or the other with different names. -- http://www.mizoram.nic.in/

What’s more, Mr. Zhang was seized by police just a day before he was to meet with U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom David N. Saperstein, who was in China partly to discuss the travails of Christian churches. The detention came less than a month before Chinese President Xi Jinping is to meet President Obama at a U.S.-China summit, so it also represents a slap at the United States. Mr. Obama should not let it go unmentioned when Mr. Xi visits Washington.

The detention of Mr. Zhang augments a crackdown in which hundreds of Chinese human rights lawyers have been arrested and interrogated by police since July for having championed sensitive causes that make the government nervous. The sweep has targeted lawyers who have represented environmental activists; parents of children who became ill from consuming tainted powdered milk; a Beijing research assistant for a prominent German newspaper; women’s rights activists protesting sexual harassment; and pro-democracy campaigners, among many others. In all, according to Amnesty International, more than 230 lawyers were detained, at least briefly, and at least two dozen were still being held weeks later.

A confident government in Beijing could surely countenance growing civic activism whose common thread is the service of human dignity; and indeed, China’s authoritarian system, despite its intolerance of dissent, had allowed a proliferation of issue advocacy, at least on a case-by-case basis, that stopped well short of threatening the regime itself.

Now, by attempting to muzzle and intimidate lawyers and activists like Mr. Zhang, and tear down church crosses by the hundreds, the government is only drawing attention to its tenuous legitimacy and the limits of China’s rule of law.

ALTHOUGH THE Chinese Communist Party is officially atheist, the country’s constitution allows “freedom of religious belief,” and the practice of formal religion has expanded in China, in fits and starts, for decades. The number of Chinese professing Christianity, in particular â€" estimated at more than 70 million â€" is rising so dramatically that, by some projections, China will have the world’s biggest Christian population by 2030.

The profusion of churches seems to have unnerved some Chinese authorities, who have undertaken a campaign to tear down hundreds of crosses, and in some instances entire churches, in Zhejiang, a coastal province where a prosperous Christian community and large numbers of churches have taken root.

The government’s move against churches, after years of widening religious tolerance, reflects its continued resistance to the rule of law and, with it, the potential for any challenge to the Communist Party’s monolithic grip on political power.

The government’s insecurity revealed itself in late August when a highly respected rights lawyer, Zhang Kai, who had taken up the cases of dozens of churches in Zhejiang protesting the demolition of their crosses, was detained by police. The fact that he is being held in secretive detention, with no access to his lawyers, colleagues or family, and on trumped-up charges â€" endangering state security and “assembling a crowd to disrupt social order” â€" only underscores the authorities’ fretfulness.
