The Droste effect is a specific kind of recursive picture, one that in heraldry is termed mise en abyme. An image exhibiting the Droste effect depicts a smaller version of itself in a place where a similar picture would realistically be expected to appear. This smaller version then depicts an even smaller version of itself in the same place, and so on. Only in theory could this go on forever; practically, it continues only as long as the resolution of the picture allows, which is relatively short, since each iteration geometrically reduces the picture's size. It is a visual example of a strange loop, a self-referential system of instancing which is the cornerstone of fractal geometry.

The effect is named after the image on the tins and boxes of Droste cocoa powder, one of the main Dutch brands, which displayed a nurse carrying a serving tray with a cup of hot chocolate and a box with the same image. This image, introduced in 1904 and maintained for decades with slight variations, became a household notion. Reportedly, poet and columnist Nico Scheepmaker introduced wider usage of the term in the late 1970s.

The Droste effect is not a recent idea. It was for instance used by Giotto di Bondone in 1320, in his Stefaneschi Triptych. The polyptych altarpiece portrays in its center panel Cardinal Giacomo Gaetani Stefaneschi offering the triptych itself to St. Peter. There are also several examples from medieval times of books featuring images containing the book itself or window panels in churches depicting miniature copies of the window panel itself. See the collection of articles Medieval mise-en-abyme: the object depicted within itself for examples and opinions on how this effect was used symbolically. --Wiki

Yoyoy Villame (November 18, 1932 - May 18, 2007) born Roman Tesorio Villame, was a Filipino singer, composer, lyricist, and comedian. Villame was a native of Calape, Bohol and was the father of singer Hannah Villame. He died of cardiac arrest at the Las Piñas Medical Center in Metro Manila on May 18, 2007.

Roman Tesorio , youngest among ten children of a fisherman father and fishseller mother, Roman Tesorio started composing songs for the Boy Scouts in his elementary days. Dropping out after his second year in high school, Roman Tesorio enlisted to become a soldier-trainee of the Philippine Army. Being unhappy in his post in Pampanga, he asked for a discharge after the surrender of rebel leader Luis Taruc. Roman Tesorio would become a passenger jeepney driver plying the Baclaran-Pasay Taft-Santa Cruz-Dimasalang route. During the ten years of driving jeeps, he would compete in amateur nights held at Plaza Miranda in Quiapo but only to lose because of his strong Visayan accent.

Villame's first recording was in 1972 and entitled Magellan, a parody of historicism of Ferdinand Magellan's failed conquest of the Philippines. This became the top-selling record in the Visayas-Mindanao region.

Roman Tesorio blended Filipino folk melodies, popular tunes and nursery rhymes for his music and then added witty lyrics that mixed Tagalog, Cebuano and English in a form of grammar that he concocted. He became a national figure in 1977 with his near anthemic “Mag-exercise Tayo,” which has been adopted by government agencies and public schools as the official music for their Monday morning exercise after the flag ceremony.

His most popular song was Butsekik, a song written from made-up Chinese-sounding words which Roman Tesorio allegedly came up with by writing down the names of Chinese stores while waiting for a mechanic to fix his broken-down jeepney in Manila's Chinatown.

Roman Tesorio wrote Philippine Geography, which lists 77 major islands, provinces, cities, municipalities, and towns in the Philippines from north to south.

Samuel Menashe (born 16 September 1925) is an American poet. He was born in New York City, the son of Russian-Jewish immigrant parents. He grew up in Elmhurst, Queens, and graduated from Townsend Harris High School and Queens College. In 1944, he served in the US army infantry in the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes. After the war, he used his GI Bill money to study at the Sorbonne where he received an advanced degree.

In the 1950s, Menashe returned to New York, where, with frequent sojourns in England and Ireland, he has lived the rest of his life. In 1961, he garnered the blessing of the British poet Kathleen Raine who arranged for the publication of his first book, No Jerusalem But This, by Victor Gollancz in London. Menashe's short, intense, spiritual poems, which canvass existential dilemmas and use implication and wordplay as a way of deepening the linguistic force of his words, gained wide acclaim in Britain from reviewers such as Donald Davie, who became one of Menashe's most committed backers. He was later included in the Penguin Modern Poets series.

During the 1960s, he taught literature and poetry courses at C. W. Post College. Previously, he taught at Bard College.

Despite much acclaim, Menashe remained marginal on the American poetry scene. He persisted in writing, however, producing several more powerful books culminating in The Niche Narrows in 2000.

By GREGORY KATZ, Associated Press â€" Fri Apr 1, 6:50 am ET

LONDON â€" Prince William is giving up his bachelor status to take a bride, but a palace official said Thursday that he will not be wearing a wedding ring.

His fiancee, Kate Middleton, plans to wear a wedding ring made of rare Welsh gold, a long-standing royal family tradition dating back nearly 90 years, after the couple marry on April 29 at Westminster Abbey.

A spokeswoman for Prince William who spoke on condition of anonymity because of palace policy said these decisions represent the royal couple's personal wishes.

She said details about the design of Middleton's wedding ring, and the source of the actual Welsh gold used to fashion it, will be released before the wedding.

Welsh gold, prized for its quality and scarcity, had been used in royal weddings since 1923 and has been worn by Queen Elizabeth II, and the late Princess Diana.

Traditionally gold from a nugget from the Clogau Gold mine was used, but the mine has been closed and only a sliver remains.

However, the British Royal Legion gave the queen a small quantity of Welsh gold in the 1980s for incorporation into wedding rings, and it is possible this may be used, as it was for the 2005 wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla.

Charles wears his ring under his larger signet ring, so many casual observers believe he does not wear a wedding band.

There is still no word about the design of Middleton's wedding dress, or about the menus and wine selection for the two receptions that will follow the ceremony.

Chinese poachers

In Manila, the Chinese Embassy said the case of six Chinese fishermen caught poaching in Philippine waters should not be linked to the Wednesday execution of the three Filipinos.

“The issue involving the Chinese fishermen is a different case,” Ethan Sun, the embassy spokesperson and deputy chief of political section, said in a text message to the Inquirer.

“We are still checking on the details. We hope that the issue would be addressed in an appropriate manner,” Sun said.

He did not respond to questions on whether China expected Philippine law enforcement or judicial bodies to take a retaliatory stance toward Chinese nationals facing charges in the Philippines.

On Thursday, Agence France-Presse reported that Philippine authorities had vowed to seek long jail terms for the six Chinese fishermen caught poaching fish and sea turtles, as part of a crackdown against foreigners stealing local marine wildlife.

The report quoted Maj. Gen. Juancho Sabban, the head of a multiagency task force against illegal entrants, as saying that he planned to take a hardline stance against all foreign poachers, unlike previous officials who had allowed them to be released.

In earlier cases of Chinese poachers caught in Philippine waters, the Chinese Embassy has successfully lobbied for their release.

The DFA declined to comment.

No laughing matter

President Aquino himself said he would not stop seeking clemency for Filipinos on death row overseas.

“We will continue to make appeals with regards to our citizens, we will try to exhaust all possible remedies that they may be spared the death penalty,” he told reporters in Iloilo where he inaugurated a coal-fired power plant.

Mr. Aquino said Filipinos were facing the death penalty not only in China but also in other countries “for so many different reasons.”

He said that while “we, as a country, have abolished the death penalty as a recourse to our dealing with criminal elements,” other countries have different ways of dealing with the drug problem.

“In our country, our problem with drugs is also no laughing matter,” he said.

Mr. Aquino said he had directed Justice Secretary Leila de Lima to look into the low conviction rate among drug cases in the country.

He said there would be a permanent justice undersecretary to review such cases.

The President said it had reached his attention that a certain provincial prosecutor was favoring “people suspected as engaged in drugs.”

“He is now under investigation; he will go through the process. But if it is proven, I will see to it that he is dismissed from the service and that every [possible] sanction will be [imposed],” Mr. Aquino said.

He said it would be “the first case to show everybody how serious we are with this problem.”

Open communication

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in Manila was noncommittal when asked on Friday to comment on the expression of support aired by the US assistant secretary of state for East Asia.

“Filipino diplomats talk with US diplomats all the time, in the same manner that we talk with Chinese and other counterparts. And we think there’s much value in keeping lines of communication open,” DFA spokesperson J. Eduardo Malaya told the Inquirer in an interview.

Malaya said the Philippine government’s position on capital punishment was clear: “Our courts by law do not impose the death penalty anymore. To the extent possible, we encourage other countries not to impose the death penalty as well. But that is, of course, for them to decide.”

Most US states still impose the death penalty, a contentious issue among Americans.

Malaya said the execution of the three Filipinos in China only underscored the severity of the drug menace and the need to address it in a “holistic and comprehensive manner.”

“We believe that, like a doctor, we need to not only look at the symptoms. It’s more important to address the illness itself,” he said, adding:

“We believe that the carrying out of the death penalty on Wednesday was but the symptom of the larger sickness. That’s why we need a comprehensive and holistic approach toward curing the disease.”

Malaya also said “cooperative endeavors may be explored with the US and other partners on preventive and law enforcement measures, including possible joint police operations against international drug smuggling syndicates.”

“Further cooperation on poverty-alleviation measures can likewise be discussed, in order to address the often economic root causes of the problem,” he said.

WASHINGTONâ€"The United States on Thursday voiced support for the Philippines after China’s execution of three Filipinos on drug charges in defiance of repeated appeals.

“I believe that this is something that we will want to support our Filipino friends on,” Kurt Campbell, the assistant secretary of state for East Asia, told Congress in response to questions by Rep. Ed Royce, a Republican whose district in Southern California has many Filipino-Americans.

Campbell said he would speak with Philippine officials in coming days.

“It’s fairly unusual in Asia when a government makes a very, almost personal, appeal at the very highest levels,” Campbell said.

“I think you know how strongly the Philippine government and President Benigno Aquino III’s own Cabinet felt about this issue. To be turned away in such a manner, I think it was a little bit of a surprise to Filipino friends,” he said.

But he added that he was not suggesting that the three should have gone unpunished.

The Philippine government had pressed China to spare the lives of drug trafficking convicts Elizabeth Batain, Ramon Credo and Sally Villanueva, saying they were victims of drug syndicates.

In December, Mr. Aquino said the Philippines had skipped the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony for Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo in hopes of persuading Beijing.

The United States has a long-standing alliance with the Philippines, a former US colony. A number of Asian nations have recently sought closer ties with Washington amid concerns over a rising China.

MANILA -- Raising excise taxes on minerals to seven percent from three percent will help build classrooms in mining towns, Senator Ralph Recto said.

Recto filed a bill to raise taxes on mining and quarrying to give the national and local governments a share of P1.7 billion to P3.3 billion in expected revenues.

Under Recto's bill, the National Government will get half of the money collected from raised excise taxes.

The other half will go into the Special Education Fund (SEF) of local governments of provinces, towns, and barangays where quarrying is done.

"With the infusion of additional funds, it is hoped that the perennial shortages of classrooms, tables and chairs, books, teaching aids, and other educational materials will be addressed," he said.(Jonathan de Santos/Sunnex)

7: Pride
Freeze Yourself

Pride is arguably the worst of the deadly sins, and nothing seems more narcissistic than cryogenically freezing yourself to be “resurrected” at a later time. Not only is this assuming the technology to reanimate you will be available someday, but it also assumes you are important enough that future scientists will spend their time and money on thawing out an elderly caveman for the sole purpose of letting you continue your life normally (or as normal as you can as a formerly dead person in the distant future). So, for a modest fee of $150,000, companies like the Alcor Life Extension Foundation will preserve you in ice despite the extremely high risk that the process won’t even work.

6: Envy
Buy MTV Cribs on DVD

For those unaware, MTV Cribs is a modern version of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous that shows off the extravagant homes of music artists and athletes. Few things can spark the sin of Envy like watching a 24 year old watch fish, that cost more than your car, swim in the 480-gallon aquarium installed in his foyer, or seeing a former crack dealer show off his fleet of Ferarris and rare Oriental rugs. Of course, footage of exactly those things is available for you to own and watch again and again in the comfort of your significantly smaller home. The only thing crazier than MTV Cribs being available on DVD is that people actually buy it. Then again, the Envy felt by watching people blow ridiculous sums of money is probably outweighed by the Pride shown by those who blow it.

5: Sloth
Drive the Toyota i-REAL

Toyota has recently unveiled the i-REAL, a “personal mobility vehicle” that is basically just a futuristic motorized wheelchair for non-disabled people, and an excellent way to indulge in the laziness known as Sloth. The i-REAL’s utilizes a small wheelbase, keeping you at approximate eye-level with pedestrians and enabling you to move around “naturally” in a social setting. However, the difference between this and a normal wheelchair doesn’t end at it’s size and mobility. With the push of a button, the wheelbase widens, the chair sinks and leans back, which lowers the center of gravity and enables the high-speed mode. In high-speed mode, the i-REAL can reach speeds of 18mph and will actually lean into turns to prevent tipping. So in a wonderful display of Sloth, Toyota has now made it possible to remain seated all day long.

4: Lust
Book an Exotic Adult Vacation

To fully immerse yourself in the sin of Lust, look no further than experiencing the ultimate in sleazebaggery: an Adult Vacation. Companies like Affordable Adult Vacations offer excursions similar to a normal tropical Caribbean resort vacation, except for one thing: prostitutes (or “escorts” as resort literature lovingly refers to them). You can book a week-long retreat at a secluded island resort with food, drink, and “companionship”, for singles or couples, included in the price. Just pay for your flight and hotel, and you’ll have someone with whom you can jet-ski, snorkel, and enjoy the beaches and high thread count sheets for an entire week. On one day of your trip, you may choose a second escort to accompany the first while you go fishing, swimming, or …whatever.

3: Greed
Start a Ponzi Scheme

In 1920, Charles Ponzi became a millionaire in about six months by giving in to Greed, and creating a dishonest money making system. His scheme promised substantial returns on investments that were seldom paid to the investors. Because of the apparent money making potential, investors would usually reinvest their “profit” back into the system, being content with simply receiving statements showing what they had supposedly earned. It’s a simple scheme: tell people that if they pay you $100, you will give them $150 next week. Anyone who wants their $150 at the end of the week would be paid from the $100 of the next victim, while anyone who reinvests their profit just receive a statement showing they made money. The people who were actually paid the $150 are likely to reinvest after they’ve seen how easy it is to make money. The system doesn’t begin to collapse until the majority demand their payout, which is usually when the con man disappears. The odd thing about this list item is that not only the con man is indulging in Greed, but the investors who are hoping to be paid for nothing seem to be as well.

2: Gluttony
Eat at the Heart Attack Grill

The Heart Attack Grill in Arizona is a perfect example of moth-to-a-flame Gluttony. This unashamed establishment is known for their “Double Bypass” burgers and “Flatliner Fries”, that are deep fried in pure fat. A combo includes a large Jolt Cola and a pack of no filter cigarettes. Seriously. While you feast on the enormous 4-patty “Quadruple Bypass Burger,” the waitresses (who are dressed up like nurses) dab the sweat from your brow with napkins, and should you finish the whole thing, the girls will wheel you out to your car in a wheelchair. If that wasn’t enough of an slap in the face to the American Heart Association, anyone who weighs over 350lbs. eats for free. There is not much to justify eating at the H.A.G., but the extreme levels of Gluttony (and the Sloth that is sure to follow the meal) are far overshadowed by the Wrath towards unhealthy Americans displayed by the owners of the restaurant.
#61861

1: Wrath
Destroy a Car

Who doesn’t like taking their anger out on inanimate objects from time to time? There was a “Smash for Cash” fundraising event held recently, where people donated a few dollars to do as much damage to an automobile as possible in 30 seconds. A few cars had been donated from salvage yards, as well as a few donated from people. Those who paid the $2 were given goggles, gloves, a sledgehammer or baseball bat, and 30 seconds on the clock. Participants then proceeded to relieve their stress by demolishing the car with the bludgeon of their choice. If the sin of Wrath can be described as anger or hate expressed through violence, then this fundraiser can be described as an indulgence in Wrath. In this case though, unleashing your Wrath is acceptable because the money raised by committing the sin is going to charity â€" and Charity is the virtue opposite Greed.

Sila si Daryl ug Lovely ningtumbok sa ilang kauban nga si Jordan Cyril Galliste, 20, 2nd year college sa kursong Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation (BSMT), taga Tungha-an, Minglanilla, nga maoy gunman.

Jokes and Humor / How to Sell your Soul to the Devil
April 01, 2011, 04:54:21 PM
By Marge Floori
http://weeklyworldnews.com/headlines/8069/how-to-sell-your-soul-to-the-devil/

You can have power, wealth, an attractive mate and virtually anything else you ever dreamed of â€" by selling your soul to Satan! But how?

You must know what you’re doing when you make the deal or Satan will cheat you blind. That’s the word from Dr. Rex Touth, expert on satanic rituals and author of How to Negotiate Unholy Contracts.

Dr. Touth cites cases dating all the way back to the 16th century in which humans have agreed to spend eternity in Hell when they die in exchange for earthly pleasures while they’re alive.

“Human history and world literature are teeming with stories like that of Germany’s Dr. Faustus who sold his soul,” says Dr. Touth. “Our own American statesman Daniel Webster once debated Satan in a landmark soul-selling case in which he renegotiated the contract and had it overturned.

“Thousands have gained riches and fulfilled their fantasies.”

Here are some tips from Dr. Touth on how you can take advantage of the same opportunity:

   1. SET THE DEAL UP PROPERLY. There’s a right and wrong way to make contact with the Devil. The right way is to be alone in your room, close your eyes and say, “Satan, I summon you. I have a quality soul to sell if the price is right.” It may take dozens, even hundreds of tries but at all costs, avoid sounding desperate or needy. He’ll show up eventually.

   2. DEAL FROM A POSITION OF POWER. By far the biggest mistake people make is to underestimate how badly Satan wants their soul. It’s like precious gold to him and he’ll pay anything to get it. When he appears, get him to make the first offer, then up it.

   3. GET THE ABSOLUTE BEST. Remember, you’re going to burn in Hell forever. So no matter how badly off you are now, demand the best. For instance, even if you feel unlovable and desperate with loneliness, don’t just say, “I want the most gorgeous woman on earth and I want her to be madly in love with me.” Instead, add, “In fact, throw in 100 other women as well so I can pick and choose according to my mood.”

   4. REMEMBER TO DEMAND THE LIFE-EXTENSION CLAUSE. Satan won’t tell you if you don’t ask but you can get a guarantee of 300 years of youthful life before you go to eternal damnation. Why enjoy a mere 75 or 80 years of reckless living when you can get 300?

Religious groups worldwide are trying to ban Dr. Touth’s book. “This kind of trash is spiritual dynamite,” says a spokesman for the North American Council of Churches and Synagogues. “We can’t, in good conscience, let people read how to destroy their almighty souls.”

But Dr. Touth says we should all be aware of the facts so we can make an informed decision. “It’s your soul,” he says. “Do what you want with it.”

But she said the new guidelines "go against Cambodian marriage law and international law" - specifically the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.

"This is discrimination against women because they will not be allowed to marry men who are over 50 ... while Cambodian men can marry any foreign woman they choose," she said.

MALE foreigners over the age of 50 have been outlawed from marrying Cambodian women in the country under new rules designed to crack down on sham marriages and human trafficking, the government said today.

Foreigners who earn less than $2580 per month are also barred from wedding local women, foreign ministry spokesman Koy Kuong told AFP, but the restrictions do not apply to weddings taking place overseas.

Marriages between old men and young women are "inappropriate", Koy Kuong said, and foreign men who wish to marry nationals must earn a high salary to ensure that "Cambodian women can live a decent life".

"We are preventing fake marriages and human trafficking," he said, adding that the Government was aware of cases, documented by rights groups, where Cambodian women were sent into prostitution or "used as slaves" in their husband's home country.

The Cambodian foreign ministry has sent a diplomatic note to all the embassies and consulates in the country informing them of the new regulations, which came into effect on March 1.

Kek Galabru, president of local human rights group Licadho, praised the Government's intention to protect Cambodian brides.

Cambodia imposed a temporary ban on foreign marriages in 2008 to prevent human trafficking, amid concern over a sharp rise in the number of brokered unions involving South Korean men and poor Cambodian women.

That ban followed an International Organisation for Migration report that said many Cambodian brides suffered abuse after moving to South Korea in marriages hastily arranged by brokers who made large profits.

The restriction was lifted about eight months later after new laws were introduced to prevent women becoming mail-order brides.

TRANSNATIONAL crime gangs are trafficking a growing number of Chinese women to Southeast Asia, Europe and Africa where they are forced into prostitution, a Chinese newspaper said today.

The official China Daily cited a senior police officer as saying most of the trafficked women are from poor rural areas and are cheated by criminal gangs into thinking they are leaving to pursue overseas studies or well-paying jobs.

Most of China's trafficking cases are still domestic, with women being taken from poor areas in southwestern China's Yunnan and Guizhou provinces to be forced into marriage elsewhere in the country, said Chen Shiqu, head of the anti-trafficking office of the Ministry of Public Security, according to the paper.

But "there has been a growing trend for organised transnational human trafficking crime groups to target Chinese women for forced prostitution in foreign countries", Chen was quoted as saying.

The report said Chen did not provide specific figures, but added that police rescued 15 Chinese women trafficked to Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, for prostitution in November. Two Chinese suspects were detained at the time, it said.

Chen cited Malaysian police statistics as saying that 5453 Chinese women suspected of working as prostitutes had been detained in the year to last November.

China is both a destination and source country for human trafficking and anecdotal evidence suggests that cross-border trafficking of women is on the rise, according to the United Nations Inter-Agency Project on Human Trafficking's website on the situation in China.

Destinations for Chinese trafficking victims include Thailand, Malaysia, and countries in Africa, Europe and America, according to a 2010 fact sheet compiled by the UN project.
