The golden age

By 1965, Martin was chafing at EMI's oversight and decided to become an independent producer. He established Associated Independent Recording, though he continued to work with the Beatles as well as other EMI acts.

He also entered his most fruitful period. The Beatles were breaking ground, and Martin was right along with them.

On "Strawberry Fields," he recorded two versions: one using more standard rock-band instrumentation, the other with an orchestra. When Lennon asked to put the two together -- despite the versions being in different keys and tempi -- Martin and engineer Geoff Emerick obliged and, by happy accident, found they fit almost perfectly by speeding one version up and slowing the other down.

#6102

Martin was always a valuable partner to the Beatles, but particularly so in the early years. It was Martin who suggested speeding up the tempo of "Please Please Me," originally a Roy Orbison-inspired slow rocker. It was Martin who suggested to Epstein that he meet with Dick James, who became the group's song publisher. And it was Martin who found ways of making the group's experiments work, whether it was feedback on "I Feel Fine," the use of a sitar on "Norwegian Wood" or the harpsichord-sounding piano on "In My Life."

Not one to miss a trick, he also recorded instrumental versions of the band's hits during the height of Beatlemania and provided incidental music to the group's film "A Hard Day's Night."
#6103

Still, Martin quickly learned the Beatles were not easily moldable like other bands of the era. There was no frontman: Lennon, Harrison and Paul McCartney all sang lead.

Lennon and McCartney were also determined to make it as songwriters and were dismissive of Martin's suggestion, at an early session, that they release a Mitch Murray song called "How Do You Do It." Another producer may have put his foot down, but Martin decided to trust the band's judgment. They soon rewarded him by coming up with "Please Please Me," the group's first UK No. 1.

(Not that Martin was wrong; Gerry and the Pacemakers later took "How Do You Do It" to No. 1 as well.)
#6104

Nevertheless, he liked a few aspects of the group and eventually agreed to sign them.

"I just thought they were interesting and had something slightly different, and I'd like to know more about them," he told the BBC in 1964.

Their humor, typified by Harrison's quip, helped win him over.
#6105

'Something slightly different'

Still, he had his eye on a rock 'n' roll act, a sure entry into the youth market. At the time, Britain was top-heavy with teen idols, ranging from the sublime (Cliff Richard and Billy Fury) to the marginal (Johnny Gentle and Dickie Pride).

In February 1962, Martin received a call from a music publisher who was trying to drum up interest for a band managed by a friend, Brian Epstein. Martin met with Epstein and heard his group, the Beatles.

He was not impressed. The songs were weak and the tempos uneven.
#6106

After a short stint at the BBC, he joined EMI Records' Parlophone label, a tiny part of the huge record conglomerate. Martin had some success -- he did a hit record with actor Peter Ustinov in 1952 -- but was still caught off-guard when he was asked to take over the label in 1955. He hadn't yet turned 30.

Parlophone was primarily focused on classical music and was forever in danger of being shut down. Martin expanded the repertoire, signing comedy acts such as the Goons and some pop singers. In a pinch, he even performed himself under assumed names.

He liked the freedom to experiment: "I made a lot of what I call 'sound pictures' with actors and comedians because it was fun to do. I'm a person who gets bored quite easily, and I don't like doing the same thing over and over again," he said.
#6107

At EMI's staid Abbey Road Studios, where the studio engineers were required to wear lab coats, Martin could have easily taken offense. Instead, it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

George Henry Martin was born in London on January 3, 1926. He took an interest in music from an early age, teaching himself piano and becoming enraptured by radio broadcasts of orchestras. By the time he was 15, he was running a small band, George Martin and the Four Tune Tellers.

He enlisted in the Royal Navy at 17 and served as a pilot and commissioned officer, though he "managed to evade Japan," he told Rock Cellar magazine. Upon leaving the military in 1947, he enrolled in the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, studying piano and oboe.

Finding odd harmony

On the surface, the contrast between the patrician-looking Martin and his long-haired musical charges couldn't have been starker. He was movie-star handsome, reserved, establishment; they were casually pretty, energetic, counterculture. He was the World War II generation; they were the ones who helped upend it.

But the two sides had a surprising amount in common. Martin came from a working-class background, as did the Beatles. Moreover, the producer was a keen fan of comedy, having worked with members of "The Goon Show," such as Sellers and Spike Milligan, and produced the satirical "Beyond the Fringe" troupe. Their work was well known to the comedy-loving Beatles.

It was a sense of humor that may have initially bound them together. According to legend, when introduced to Martin at an audition for his record label, the producer asked the band whether there was anything they didn't like. George Harrison quickly responded, "Well, for a start, I don't like your tie."
#6109

By then, even he wondered whether the group had gone too far.

"As we were getting longer and longer into the album, and more and more avant-garde, I was wondering if we were being a little over-the-top and a little bit, maybe, pretentious," Martin recalled in a 1992 documentary about "Pepper." "Is the public ready for this yet?"
#6110

With a gentle bit of nudging, Martin added the cello in low octave and violin in high octave. "His idea obviously worked because the song subsequently became one of the most recorded songs ever," McCartney said in a statement.

He allowed backward tape loops on "Tomorrow Never Knows," even if he couldn't make John Lennon's voice sound like chanting Tibetan monks -- one of Lennon's characteristically absurd requests.

The work reached a pinnacle in 1967, with Martin's ingenious oversight of the "Penny Lane" / "Strawberry Fields Forever" single and the album that often tops the lists of greatest ever: "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."
#6111

In Martin's hands, however, that job was both expansive and unobtrusive. Songs produced by George Martin had a distinctive touch but rarely called attention to his work. The spotlight was on the music.

And yet his role cannot be overstated. Working with engineers such as Norman Smith and Geoff Emerick, Martin helped the Beatles turn the studio into another instrument.

He added a string quartet to "Yesterday" -- a decision that McCartney initially balked at, telling Martin: "Oh no, George. We are a rock and roll band."
#6112

The polished, classically trained producer began as a father figure to the four somewhat scruffy lads from Liverpool, capturing their songs on tape with a minimum of fuss or studio gimmickry. But by 1966, he was as much a collaborator as mentor, using his knowledge of both musical structure and recording technology to help the band realize its musical visions.

Typically modest, he described his role as a producer in matter-of-fact terms.

"Put simply, my job was to make sure recordings were artistically exceptional and commercially appealing, maximizing the qualities of artists and songs," he told JazzWax.com.
#6113

Ringo Starr thanked the producer in a tweet: "God bless George Martin peace and love to Judy and his family." Judy refers to Martin's wife of nearly 50 years.

Martin's partnership with the group he signed to Parlophone Records in 1962 changed all of their lives -- and, by extension, popular culture.

"When I first met the Beatles in 1962, I didn't think much of their songs at all," he told JazzWax.com. "But they learned so quickly how to write a hit. They were like plants in a hothouse. They grew incredibly fast."
#6114

Martin worked with countless others over a career that spanned decades, including Peter Sellers, Shirley Bassey, America, Cheap Trick, Jeff Beck and Celine Dion. But his fame, and his influence, rests on the seven years he spent with the Beatles, the most successful group in music history -- a group Martin helped propel to the top spot with his musical expertise, tasteful arrangements and willing experimentation.

For Paul McCartney, Martin was "like a second father to me."

"If anyone earned the title of the fifth Beatle it was George," he said in a statement. "From the day that he gave The Beatles our first recording contract, to the last time I saw him, he was the most generous, intelligent and musical person I've ever had the pleasure to know."

Sir George Martin, Beatles producer, dead at 90

By Todd Leopold, CNN
March 9, 2016

CNN)Sir George Martin, the music producer whose collaboration with the Beatles helped redraw the boundaries of popular music, died Tuesday, according to his management company. He was 90.

Martin died "peacefully at home" in England, according to Adam Sharp, the founder of C A Management which represents the music producer.

"In a career that spanned seven decades he was recognized globally as one of music's most creative talents and a gentleman to the end. The family ask that their privacy be respected at this time," Sharp said.

So often in situations of verbal abuse, you know something feels off, but you just can’t put your finger on it. The abuser does such a good job of masking his or her true intentions that it takes a long time to figure out what’s happening. Once you do, your self-esteem is so low you don’t have the energy to take action or leave the relationship.

Recovering from this kind of verbal abuse begins with awareness and recognition that you are a victim of it. In some ways it is more difficult to recognize verbal abuse than it is physical abuse, as you don’t have bruises to show for it.

You aren’t crazy or overly sensitive if you feel verbally abused. Don’t allow it to continue. If you want to save the relationship, seek out professional counseling â€" but remember an abuser must be willing to acknowledge their abusive behaviors if there’s a chance of real change.

http://liveboldandbloom.com/
#6120

12. Denying

You might try to express your pain and frustration with the verbal abuser’s behavior, but he or she pretends to have no idea what you’re talking about. You must be crazy or overly sensitive because the abuser’s behavior is perfectly normal. If you’d just stop blaming them, everything would be fine.

This denial makes you feel crazy and question yourself. If this person you care about has no idea what you’re talking about, maybe you ARE the one who has the problem.
#6121

11. Commanding

Everything has to be done the abuser’s way, and she makes sure she tells you exactly how and when it must be done. She uses words and tone to communicate in no uncertain terms what her expectations are, and you know from experience that it won’t be pleasant if you argue or disagree.
#6122

10. Forgetting

There are regular situations in which the abuser conveniently “forgets” to do something you requested or to show up on time for something important to you. He always has a great reason for not following through or acts as though forgetting is “no big deal.”

He makes you feel bad for suggesting his chronic forgetfulness is a problem. You are too demanding, not understanding enough, or over-blow situations.
#6123

9. Accusing

The abuser suggests that any verbal abuse is a result of your behavior. You are to blame for whatever negative, hurtful comments might be hurled your way. “If you weren’t so whiny, I might be able to listen to you.” “You need praise all the time. Someone’s got to take you down a rung.”

This is the most bewildering part of verbal abuse, as you begin to feel at fault for what’s happening.
#6124

8. Diverting

Another way a verbal abuser manipulates is by diverting a conversation to something she wants to talk about rather than responding to you.

If she feels uncomfortable about an issue you want to address, she simply steers the conversation in a different direction, or she refuses to talk altogether. She stonewalls you by saying it’s the wrong time to talk, or she doesn’t feel like discussing the matter.

Conversations of importance to you rarely occur, and if they do, it’s always on the abuser’s terms.
#6125

7. Undermining

When you do express a goal or dream, the abuser tries to get under your skin and make you feel incapable. He might suggest you’re “in over your head” or maybe “you need more experience to tackle that.” He erodes your self-confidence, as he helpfully suggests you don’t have what it takes.

He might remind you of your lack of education or a past failure, or he simply gives you a doubtful look and refuses to discuss your ideas. The abuser doesn’t have to say the words, “You’re not good enough to succeed.” But you feel your confidence and self-esteem slipping away, as you receive little reinforcement or support.
#6126

6. Discounting

No matter what you’ve accomplished or how well you’ve done something, the abuser can’t offer a compliment or positive word of praise. In fact, they diminish your achievements and act as though they are unimportant or much less important than anything the abuser has achieved in the past.

The abuser often finds ways to undermine the praise others might give you or point out a flaw to dilute the praise. They don’t want you to shine and overshadow them in any way.
#6127

5. Trivializing

The abuser takes countering a step further by letting you know that what you think or say is unimportant or stupid. They may interrupt you, neglect to respond, or talk down to you. They might try to disguise their disrespect by patronizing you and attempting to make you feel like a child.
#6128

4. Countering

No matter what you say or what ideas you express, the abuser contradicts or undermines you. You simply can’t be right or have a unique point of view. The abuser will argue with you and force the last word to protect his or her dominance over the conversation.

You feel your ideas, feelings, or thoughts are never respected or valued.
#6129

3. Joking

Have you ever had someone make a subtle but unkind joke at your expense? It stings and makes you feel disrespected or embarrassed. A verbal abuser regularly uses “humor” to disguise hurtful comments.

The abuser often makes these jokes in front of other people, getting in a laugh (as well as a dig) at your expense. If you complain, you’ll often hear, “Can’t you take a joke? Don’t be so sensitive â€" I was just kidding.”  These so-called jokes occur often, and rarely do you hear an apology if you express your hurt.
#6130

2. Holding Back

The abuser uses words to keep you at arm’s length or prevent closeness and intimacy in order to punish or control you. There may be times of closeness and connection, but if the abuser doesn’t get her way, she might withhold emotional intimacy, making you wonder what’s going on and why the mood has suddenly shifted.

When you ask, “What’s wrong, why are you closing me out?” the abuser pretends she doesn’t know what you’re talking about.
#6131

Here are 12 surprising forms of verbal abuse you might recognize:

1. Judging or Criticizing

The verbal abuser is constantly correcting you, telling you what you’re doing wrong or how it could be done better, or subtly suggesting you don’t quite measure up in some way. Sometimes they disguise their critiques or judgement in the form of “helpful” suggestions or sharing their “expert” knowledge when you don’t ask for it.

Then if you call them out, they act hurt that you misunderstood their intentions. “I was only trying to help.” But your intuition tells you clearly they were putting you down.

The abuser might also communicate their disapproval or judgement through their facial expressions, such as eye-rolling, pursed lips, or annoyed looks.
#6132

All of us have “abused” others with our words from time to time, especially in the heat of conflict or when we feel hurt or insecure. But when someone chronically uses their words to put you down, control, or manipulate you â€" and then they deny it â€" they become true verbal abusers.  The goal, whether or not the abuser recognizes it, is to gain dominance over the other person.

This occurs most often in intimate relationships, but you can also experience verbal abuse at work, with family members, and even with someone who claims to be a friend. Do you think there’s a person in your life who may be a verbal abuser?
#6133

However, many verbal abusers aren’t as direct or threatening. Instead, they twist language and words so the recipient isn’t really sure what’s hit them. They use a subtle form of verbal abuse that infects people over time and slowly erodes their self-esteem, confidence, and trust. This kind of verbal abuse is so convoluted and disconcerting that it’s difficult to call it out and take action. Because it can’t be clearly defined, the recipient may believe she’s imagining it, or even worse, the cause of it.
#6134

Some people use words as subtle weapons to hurt, shame, or manipulate others. These people are verbal abusers and tend to attract people in their lives who are susceptible to their insidious and hurtful use of language.

Verbal abuse can be overtly threatening, frightening, and openly cruel. This kind of verbal abuse involves yelling, cursing, name-calling, bullying, and suggestions of future physical violence. In fact, this verbal battery is often the precursor to physical abuse.

By Barrie Davenport

What is a word?

According to Dictionary.com, a word is “a unit of language, consisting of one or more spoken sounds or their written representation, that functions as a principal carrier of meaning.”

Words have enormous power. As the “principle carriers of meaning,” words can lift us up or crush us. They may be no more than sounds uttered from our mouths, but the intention behind the sounds can pack more joy or pain than the most loving touch or the cruelest physical blow.

5. Baggy jeans

Sometimes, a little bag to a pair of jeans can be a good thing. After all, who wants to live in a world where people only wear ultra-tailored pants? Not us, for starters. But when your pants are on MC Hammer-level baggy and/or need a miracle belt to keep them in place? You’re in trouble. If you had any sartorial freedom in the late 1980s and early ’90s, we’re sure that you dabbled in super voluminous pants hanging way past your waistline. Luckily, we are thrilled to announce that this trend is so, so over. Unless you’re keeping these with the intent of a great throwback of a Halloween costume, these gigantic pants belong in the trash.

4. Velcro sandals

Source: Amazon

When you didn’t know how to tie your shoes, Velcro sneakers were awesome. In your boyish mind, they were easy to slip on and off, plus they made that cool ripping sound with each tug. Sometime between your childhood and adulthood, you most likely had a (not-so) brief run-in with Velcro sandals. Please, for the love of the fashion gods above, burn these shoes already. Sure, womenswear brands like Prada and Marni presented their own takes on the typical Velcro sandal a few seasons ago, but we hope that you stayed clear from any menswear iterations. Not only are you old enough to tie, buckle, and zip your own kicks, you’re also hopefully wise enough to realize that these are downright ugly. Upgrade your sandal game by investing in a cool Birkenstock-esque style or pair of espadrilles.

3. Anything logo-mania

We’re going to let you in on a little secret: In 2016 â€" or anytime, really â€" nobody cares if your sweatshirt is from Gap or Gucci. So why sport a garment with the brand’s name plastered right across the chest? In the early aughts, logo-adorned pieces were all the rage, but now? They’re just obnoxious. Now you may be wondering what the difference is between graphic T-Shirts and logo-ed apparel, so allow us to give you a quick lesson: Graphic tees can be awkward, but pieces adorned with flashy brand names tend to be materialistic and read as if you are bragging about shelling out hundreds of dollars for an Hermès belt. And since we doubt you want to be labeled an arrogant snob, toss out those logo-ed pieces (especially that Ed Hardy hat from 2004) and opt for logo-free pieces instead. If you’re looking to pick up some extra cash, try selling these at a consignment store.

2. Sweater vests

Source: iStock

It doesn’t take a genius to know that the TV world and real world are very different. A spacious studio apartment in the West Village for an aspiring actor is about as unlikely as the hot girl having eyes on a group of friends’ token nerd. Sartorially speaking, some fashion moments happen on the small screen that would never fly in reality. Case in point: Chandler and his bountiful collection of sweater vests. On Friends, the crew’s funny guy looks like your average, unassuming adult. In actuality, could he be anymore of a walking faux pas? Unless you’re a charming, 70-year-old gentleman, do yourself a favor and forgo the vests. In our opinion, sporting this to any event from work to a first date will either immediately age you five to 10 years or have you looking as if your mom styled your outfit. Either way, no go. But that doesn’t mean you should write off all layerable sweaters as a sartorial pariah: Sporty half-zips are a great alternative.

1. Graphic T-shirts

Source: Hollister Co.

Once upon a time, when mall stores like Hollister and Abercrombie and Fitch ruled everyday style, tight graphic tees were a big deal. Some were innocent enough and featured a Coca Cola logo or the Superman “S.” Others acted as sartorial pick-up lines with cheeky phrases like “Sweet Talker” or “Gettin’ Lucky in Kentucky.” No matter what those shirts â€" that we hope are tucked away in the depths of your dresser drawer â€" say, get rid of them. Immediately. These tops are kind of like the weird co-worker you have who insists that you call him Bolt instead of Billy: awkward, forced, and bound to make everyone a little uncomfortable. Instead, opt for a regular T-shirt: A versatile black or white tee will offer more mileage and no awkward double takes. If a simple solid shirt is simply too boring for you, up the ante with a striped top.

5 Types of Clothing That Are Not in Style Anymore

Kelsey Mulvey
March 07, 2016

There are two types of clothes in your closet: the versatile investment pieces that you’ll be able to pass down to your future son and those apparel and accessories that make you ask yourself, “What was I thinking?” Anyone with a pulse on fashion knows that the biggest trends are cyclical; however, some fads are so awful that we are praying they never see the light of day again. There’s a good reason why Sheldon put an end to cruciferous vegetable night on The Big Bang Theory: Veggies like kale, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli have been found to cause bloating. You might just want to avoid these if you’re hitting the beach sometime soon.

5. Processed food

Source: iStock

Processed food tends to be very high in sodium and fat and subsequently low in fiber, which is why it’s so damn delicious and also why it causes bloating. Foods that contain a high amount of sodium, such as canned soups, frozen dinners, and condiments, can cause the body to retain more water, says Rosanna Lee, a nutrition educator and community health promoter based in Toronto, to the Huffington Post. She adds that, because our bodies are trying to balance out our electrolytes by diluting salt in our bodies, bloat often happens as a result. Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD, author of The Flexitarian Diet advises in WebMD to get in the habit of reading food labels and look for labels that specify low to no sodium. The Institute of Medicine recommends that you not consume more than 2,300 mg of sodium per day.

4. Dairy

While dairy is a great source of calcium, if you’re looking for a flatter stomach, you may want to avoid it. You may be allergic and have a lactose intolerance that can cause gas and bloating when you consume anything containing dairy. If you suspect you may be lactose intolerant, pay a visit to your doctor. WebMD says that it can help to choose aged cheeses and yogurts, which are lower in lactose.

3. Refined carbohydrates

Source: iStock

Pasta, bagels, cereal, and rice â€" dude, chill out on the carbo-loading. If your choice carbs are made of white flours, start to weed those out of your diet because they get digested very quickly, causing a spike in your blood sugar and insulin levels. The Huffington Post notes that since insulin is known as a “fat storage hormone,” the more insulin circulating in your blood, the more likely your body will convert the carbs you eat into fat and will store them not just in your stomach, but everywhere else. Switch to whole wheat flour, and instead of loading up on carbs, add more lean proteins like chicken breast or salmon.

2. Alcohol

While studies show that regular, moderate consumption of 5 to 30 grams a day of an alcoholic beverage can reduce the risk of heart disease in men by 51%, it presents two problems: First, similar to sweets, it has a high caloric content with little nutritional benefit, and second, drinking one drink often leads to drinking more. Considering the fact that men are more likely to be binge drinkers, a single night out can mean consuming hundreds or even thousands of extra calories that you would normally not have consumed. It can also cause you to make bad eating choices, and those calories will add up and cause you to pack on extra padding around your middle.

She began acting more erratically, reportedly calling herself “Baroness Audrey Meri Munson-Monson,” and in 1922 she attempted suicide by OD’ing on mercury bichloride pills.

She recovered, but in 1931 was committed to an asylum in Ogdensburg, NY. The model lived there until her death in 1996 at age 104. All but forgotten, she was buried in an unmarked grave.

“What becomes of the artists’ models?” Munson wrote in a 1921 newspaper column. “I am wondering if many of my readers have not stood before a masterpiece of lovely sculpture . . . and asked themselves the question, ‘Where is she now, this model who was so beautiful?’ ”

In 1919, it all collapsed when Munson became entangled in a sensational criminal case. Her former landlord, Dr. Walter Keene Wilkins, was arrested in the murder of his wife. Wilkins claimed she had been killed by burglars, but police discovered holes in his story.

The motive, police claimed, was that Wilkins was desperate to marry Munson, with whom he’d become obsessed after she lived at his property on West 65th Street.

Wilkins was found guilty and sentenced to death. The resulting publicity ruined Munson’s career, and she later moved to small-town Mexico, NY, where her mother sold silverware door to door to support them.

Film by Roberto Serrini and Leslie Napoles Vooris

Munson was born in Rochester in 1891. Her parents divorced when she was young, and she moved with her mother to Manhattan. While walking down Broadway, the 15-year-old was approached by a photographer who asked to take her picture. Another version of the story has Munson being hit by a car carrying a sculptor who took a liking to her.

Either way, Munson was introduced to artist Isidore Konti, and she quickly became an in-demand figure model. Although the jobs required nudity, neither Munson nor her mother, hard up for money, objected.

Her new fame led to an acting contract. The 1915 silent movie “Inspiration” found Munson stripping down on camera â€" the first time nudity was shown in a non-pornographic film. She appeared in more pictures and was making “lots of money,” which her estranged father complained she was spending “like water.”

Munson inspired numerous sculptures, including the one atop the USS Maine National Monument at the entrance to Central Park in Columbus Circle.Photo: ZumaPress.com

Her face and body were the basis for “Civic Fame,” the statue that stands atop the Municipal Building at 1 Centre St., as well as the figure of Columbia adorning the USS Maine National Monument in Columbus Circle and the “Spirit of Commerce” angel at the northern base of the Manhattan Bridge.

That’s her likeness lounging above the front door of the Frick and coyly tucked in a niche outside the New York Public Library’s main branch. She is the face of Pomona, the Roman goddess of abundance, on the Pulitzer Fountain at 59th Street and Fifth Avenue, across from the Plaza Hotel.

“She was the first supermodel â€" and the first model to have a standing in society,” says Diane Rozas, co-author of “American Venus: The Extraordinary Life of Audrey Munson, Model and Muse.”

NYC’s first supermodel died alone in an insane asylum

She was known as “the most perfect model,” and in her heyday one headline proclaimed, “All New York Bows to the Real Miss Manhattan.” She earned the name not just because she was the toast of the town in the 1910s, but because her perfectly proportioned face and body inspired numerous works of sculpture that still stand in Manhattan, Brooklyn and The Bronx today.

One contemporary account concluded that Audrey Munson “posed for more public works than anyone” â€" at least a dozen of which are still on public display. New Yorkers may not know it, but they see Munson everywhere.

Being abusive seems to run in the Binay family.

People still remember what happened to the security guards at the gate of Dasmariñas Village in Makati in 2013 for not allowing then Mayor Junjun Binay to pass the gate as it was only already late. Junjun orered the arrest of the guards who were deheld by police for several hours.

The vice president  defended his son’s and Sen. Nancy Binay’s actsâ€"yes,  Nancy was with Mayor Junjunâ€"saying Junjun should have been given due courtesy because of his position as mayor.

Rep. Abby Binay, who’s running for Makati mayor in the upcoming election, was also reported to have warned her family’s critics that they would get back at them if her father becomes President.

Folks, in 1990 when that column item about Binay was written, he was not yet an elected mayor of Makati.

He was named officer in charge of the city by the new Cory Aquino government, his reward for consistently joining protest rallies against the Marcos martial law regime.

If power had already gone to his head when he was just an appointed mayor, how much more if he becomes our President.
#6174

“But the receptionist at the time who’s new at her job and so didn’t know any better disallowed Binay’s security men from entering the pool area.

“She said she would have to look for a certain Mrs. Judilla who would give permission to the men to enter the area which is exclusive to YMCA members and guests accompanied by members.

“Mrs. Judilla took a long time in showing up so Binay’s men left in a huff.

“And then a few minutes later, Makati’s ‘Royal Family’ led by Jejomar The First came. Binay was fuming and threatened to close down the YMCA.

“He made good his word. The closure came two days later on May 22.

“For a guy who, friends say, washed orinolas for prostitutes in Culi-Culi when he was young, Jejomar Binay has come a long wayâ€"in success as well as in (acquiring a sense of) entitlement..”

The answer came fastâ€"-accidentally.

I was digging through my files of past columns, which I intend to compile and make into a book, when I chanced upon an item I wrote for the June 4, 1990 issue of the Inquirer.

Here’s what I wrote in my column then:

“The YMCA in Makati has been closed to the public since May 22.

“If you want to know the reason, ask His Highness, Mayor Jejomar Binay.

“Binay and his children wanted to take a dip in the YMCA pool last May 20, Sunday, according to my sources.

“The mayor sent an advance party of security men to ‘sanitize’ the swimming pool area.

I’m not motivated by personal reasons when I criticize Vice President Jojo Binay who’s running for President in the May 9 election.

Trabaho lang, as they say in Filipino. Just doing my job as an opinion writer.

I dug into my memory bank recently and asked my subconscious mind why I have distrusted Binay ever since.

How To Tips / What Your Dog Is Trying To Tell You
March 06, 2016, 01:43:45 AM

If You Ever See Your Dog Do This, He’s Trying To Tell You Something Very Important.

Life would be a lot easier if we could just talk to our canine companions. Sure, you know they’re happy when they wag their tails, and they’re clearly upset when they whimper, but that’s about it.

However, there are plenty of other cues your dog uses to communicate with you. When you learn just how your dog is talking to you, you’ll be ready to understand your furry friend better than ever.

So, Reader, if you want things to get better, use your vote wisely. It may help to know that two of the presidential candidates and three of the vice presidential candidates are dynastic. That should make our choices easier.

What about the effect of political dynasties? That, too, has been studied. And the conclusions are that the presence of these dynasties is correlated with higher poverty, lower per capita income, and lower primary education completion rates. And how pernicious are these dynasties? The Asian Institute of Management estimates (2012) that they accounted for 70 percent of regular legislators in the Congress at that time.

The costs of corruption are not limited to low growth rates and per capita income. They affect development indicators, too.

But on the bright side, some improvement has come since 2009. Data on the Corruption Perceptions Index for  2010-2015 indicate that the Philippines has risen from 139th out of 180 countries in 2009 to 102nd out of 180 in 2015. The pcgdp growth rates for the last five years averaged 4 percent a year. And health, education, and long-term antipoverty prospects are great.
#6194

Any evidence to support these statements? I give you Nobel Laureate Gunnar Myrdal (Asian Drama) who singled out the Philippines thusly: “Graft and corruption permeate all levels of public life.” And even more painful: “…Perhaps in no other country in South Asia is political dishonesty so widely recognized, accepted and talked about as a part of the political game….” This, in 1968.

Thirty-five years later (I told you, this is a long view), in 2003, the World Economic Forum conducted an Executive Opinion Survey in which the countries surveyed were classified as: low corruption, moderate corruption, and high corruption. The Philippines was one among 10 countries in the last categoryâ€"and the only Asian country at that. The other comparator countries were all “moderately corrupt.”

In other words, Reader, we were uniqueâ€"in corruption. And it is not a question of eradicating, just moderating, for now.
#6195

So now we know what the culprits are, right?  Wrong policies, weak institutions. Therefore, Reader, you  should ask: Who are responsible for these? Short answer: our political leaders (now the connection to elections is clear). This I call our “buwaya problem”â€"which is the surfeit in this country of political leaders “whose decisions, supposedly taken for the public good, are in truth motivated by a desire for private gain and result in policies and projects that impoverish rather than enrich our country.” The “buwaya problem” is compounded by even more greed, because these politicians find “public service” so lucrative that they decide to make a family enterprise out of it, creating dynasties.
#6196

What causes the differentials in country growth rates? Studies by Sachs, and the Asian Development Bank, have narrowed the contributing factors to four: Initial Conditions, Natural Resources and Geography, Government Policies and Institutions, and Demography. Sachs studied the Philippines over the period 1965-1990, during which our pcgdp growth rate was actually 5.3 percentage points a year behind those of the Asian Tigers (South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore), and 3.3 percentage points behind the Tiger Wannabes (Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia) and China. He found that the largest contributing factor to these differences was government policies and institutions. These were responsible for between 70 percent and 79 percent of the differences in growth rates.  These findings were confirmed by ADB studies.
#6197

The Philippines was categorized as a slow growth country, its per capita GDP growth rate averaging 1.58 percent. Its Asean, East Asian (South Korea, China), or even its South Asian (India, Sri Lanka) neighbors were rapid growth countries.

Actually in 1960, the Philippines was ahead of the pack (except for South Korea) with per capita income of $1,313. Everybody else’s was lower (China’s per capita income was $403).  By 2009, that had been completely reversed. Philippine per capita income was P2,838. The comparator countries all had higher per capita incomes.

A counterfactual: Had the Philippines grown as fast as Thailand (4.4 percent), our per capita GDP (pcgdp) would have been $10,635 instead of only $2,838. Even if we grew only as fast as India (3.14 percent), our 2009 pcgdp would have been $5,477. Doesn’t that make the Reader sick?
#6198

And it was a long viewâ€"showing the growth rates of the Philippine economy, post-World War II (courtesy of the Philippine Statistical Authority), and then comparing these with those of other countries over a 50-year period (1960-2009). The 50-year comparison comes from the Economic Development text I use (Perkins, 7th Edition) at the University of the Philippines.

The table shows each country’s per capita GDP (measured in international dollars) in 1960 and then in 2009, and computes average growth rates. It divides developing countries into four categoriesâ€"those that showed negative growth over the period, those that showed slow growth (from 0 percent to <2 percent), moderate growth (2 percent to 3 percent) and rapid growth (>3 percent). Not all countries are included, only those for which data are available over the 50-year periodâ€"about 34 developing countries.

The Philippines’ ‘buwaya problem’

All our candidates in one form or another are of course promising faster growth and improved development outcomes. What has been the Philippine track record on growth?

When asked to do an economic briefing two days ago, I decided to tackle the issue. I decided to look at the forest rather than the treesâ€"the big picture, as it were. The title of my talk was “The Philippine Economy: A Long (and Wide) View.”
