THE European Union, by contrast, takes global warming very seriously, but its existence is under threat. As Africa and the Middle East continue to warm and wars rage, economic migrants and war refugees are making perilous journeys to flee to Europe. In response, European populists have called for the strict enforcement of national borders and the end of the union. Many of these populist parties are supported by Russia, which is openly pursuing a divide-and-conquer policy with the aim of bringing about European disintegration.

Russia’s 2014 intervention in Ukraine has already shattered the peaceful order that Europeans had come to take for granted. The Kremlin, which is economically dependent on the export of hydrocarbons to Europe, is now seeking to make gas deals with individual European states one by one in order to weaken European unity and expand its own influence. Meanwhile, President Vladimir V. Putin waxes nostalgic for the 1930s, while Russian nationalists blame gays, cosmopolitans and Jews for antiwar sentiment. None of this bodes well for Europe’s future â€" or Russia’s.

When mass killing is on the way, it won’t announce itself in the language we are familiar with. The Nazi scenario of 1941 will not reappear in precisely the same form, but several of its causal elements have already begun to assemble.

It is not difficult to imagine ethnic mass murder in Africa, which has already happened; or the triumph of a violent totalitarian strain of Islamism in the parched Middle East; or a Chinese play for resources in Africa or Russia or Eastern Europe that involves removing the people already living there; or a growing global ecological panic if America abandons climate science or the European Union falls apart.

Today we confront the same crucial choice between science and ideology that Germans once faced. Will we accept empirical evidence and support new energy technologies, or allow a wave of ecological panic to spread across the world?

Denying science imperils the future by summoning the ghosts of the past.

How might such a scenario unfold? China is already leasing a tenth of Ukraine’s arable soil, and buying up food whenever global supplies tighten. During the drought of 2010, Chinese panic buying helped bring bread riots and revolution to the Middle East. The Chinese leadership already regards Africa as a long-term source of food. Although many Africans themselves still go hungry, their continent holds about half of the world’s untilled arable land. Like China, the United Arab Emirates and South Korea are interested in Sudan’s fertile regions â€" and they have been joined by Japan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia in efforts to buy or lease land throughout Africa.

Nations in need of land would likely begin with tactfully negotiated leases or purchases; but under conditions of stress or acute need, such agrarian export zones could become fortified colonies, requiring or attracting violence.

Hitler spread ecological panic by claiming that only land would bring Germany security and by denying the science that promised alternatives to war. By polluting the atmosphere with greenhouse gases, the United States has done more than any other nation to bring about the next ecological panic, yet it is the only country where climate science is still resisted by certain political and business elites. These deniers tend to present the empirical findings of scientists as a conspiracy and question the validity of science â€" an intellectual stance that is uncomfortably close to Hitler’s.

The full consequences of climate change may reach America only decades after warming wreaks havoc in other regions. And by then it will be too late for climate science and energy technology to make any difference. Indeed, by the time the door is open to the demagogy of ecological panic in the United States, Americans will have spent years spreading climate disaster around the world.

The mass murder of at least 500,000 Rwandans in 1994 followed a decline in agricultural production for several years before. Hutus killed Tutsis not only out of ethnic hatred, but to take their land, as many genocidaires later admitted.

In Sudan, drought drove Arabs into the lands of African pastoralists in 2003. The Sudanese government sided with the Arabs and pursued a policy of eliminating the Zaghawa, Masalit and Fur peoples in Darfur and surrounding regions.

Climate change has also brought uncertainties about food supply back to the center of great power politics. China today, like Germany before the war, is an industrial power incapable of feeding its population from its own territory, and is thus dependent on unpredictable international markets.

This could make China’s population susceptible to a revival of ideas like Lebensraum. The Chinese government must balance a not-so-distant history of starving its own population with today’s promise of ever-increasing prosperity â€" all while confronting increasingly unfavorable environmental conditions. The danger is not that the Chinese might actually starve to death in the near future, any more than Germans would have during the 1930s. The risk is that a developed country able to project military power could, like Hitler’s Germany, fall into ecological panic, and take drastic steps to protect its existing standard of living.

The pursuit of peace and plenty through science, he claimed in “Mein Kampf,” was a Jewish plot to distract Germans from the necessity of war. “It is always the Jew,” argued Hitler, “who seeks and succeeds in implanting such lethal ways of thinking.”

As exotic as it sounds, the concept of Lebensraum is less distant from our own ways of thinking than we believe. Germany was blockaded during World War I, dependent on imports of agricultural commodities and faced real uncertainties about its food supply. Hitler transformed these fears into a vision of absolute conquest for total security. Lebensraum linked a war of extermination to the improvement of lifestyle. The chief Nazi propagandist, Joseph Goebbels, could therefore define the purpose of a war of extermination as “a big breakfast, a big lunch and a big dinner.” He conflated lifestyle with life.

To expand Germany’s Lebensraum, Hitler aimed to seize Ukraine from the Soviet Union, starve 30 million Eastern Europeans and transfer the food to Germany. When Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, the campaign had two major aims: the control of fertile Ukrainian soil and the destruction of Jews living there. It was this invasion that placed defenseless Jewish children at the mercy of the murderous Einsatzgruppen.

The mass murder of at least 500,000 Rwandans in 1994 followed a decline in agricultural production for several years before. Hutus killed Tutsis not only out of ethnic hatred, but to take their land, as many genocidaires later admitted.

New Haven â€" BEFORE he fired the shot, the Einsatzgruppe commander lifted the Jewish child in the air and said, “You must die so that we can live.” As the killing proceeded, other Germans rationalized the murder of Jewish children in the same way: them or us.

Today we think of the Nazi Final Solution as some dark apex of high technology. It was in fact the killing of human beings at close range during a war for resources. The war that brought Jews under German control was fought because Hitler believed that Germany needed more land and food to survive and maintain its standard of living â€" and that Jews, and their ideas, posed a threat to his violent expansionist program.

The Holocaust may seem a distant horror whose lessons have already been learned. But sadly, the anxieties of our own era could once again give rise to scapegoats and imagined enemies, while contemporary environmental stresses could encourage new variations on Hitler’s ideas, especially in countries anxious about feeding their growing populations or maintaining a rising standard of living.

The quest for German domination was premised on the denial of science. Hitler’s alternative to science was the idea of Lebensraum. Germany needed an Eastern European empire because only conquest, and not agricultural technology, offered the hope of feeding the German people. In Hitler’s “Second Book,” which was composed in 1928 and not published until after his death, he insisted that hunger would outstrip crop improvements and that all “the scientific methods of land management” had already failed. No conceivable improvement would allow Germans to be fed “from their own land and territory,” he claimed. Hitler specifically â€" and wrongly â€" denied that irrigation, hybrids and fertilizers could change the relationship between people and land.

BOSTON (AP) â€" Two odd-looking Chinese soft-shelled marsh turtles raised for food in Asia have been seen south of Boston, and there's concern they could eventually threaten local ecosystems if they become established in the northeastern New England states.

New England Aquarium experts said Saturday it is possible someone decided to release the animals after buying them for cooking. They urge people not to release non-native animals into the wild, and to report any sightings of the soft-shelled turtle.

People on Wollaston Beach in Quincy saw a turtle digging in the sand this past week, and the aquarium's marine animal rescue team picked it up for identification. A second sighting was reported later in the week.

"The concern is that if it can establish a population, it actually can survive our winter," said Nigella Hillgarth, the New England Aquarium's president and CEO, and a zoologist. "It could cause major changes in the ecosystem. None of the animals in that ecosystem are adapted to a predator of that size. It eats large amounts of small fish, mussels, clams and insects."

The turtles live in brackish marshes and ponds in eastern Asia. Hillgarth said they are considered endangered in the wild in China, but more than 300 million are raised annually on farms. The animals have become invasive in the Philippines, and have established themselves in Hawaii, California, and Virginia. They have been seen in New York and Maryland.

Hillgarth says the "extraordinary-looking," greenish-brown turtle has a leathery shell and is between 7 and 15 inches (17.5 and 37.5 centimeters) long.

"The thing that's remarkable," she said, "it has a really long snout, and can extend its neck. It's almost like a little periscope in the water that allows it to breathe. It has this pointy face, and you immediately know it's something very different."

How To Tips / How to stop a mosquito bite from itching
September 13, 2015, 07:57:03 PM
Rebecca Harrington, Tech Insider

Unless you have the mental fortitude to just not scratch your mosquito bites, the most effective way to stop them from itching, according to scientific evidence, is with antihistamines.

When a female mosquito bites you (the bugs use your blood to grow eggs, so the males have no reason to bite), it injects its saliva under your skin.

The saliva contains anticoagulants that make your blood easier to slurp up.

In 2012, researchers published results in PLOS ONE recording what it looked like when a mosquito bit an anesthetized mouse under a microscope.

You can see the mosquito's brownish snout locate the pink blood vessel, slide right into it, and then start sucking, which shrinks the vessel as the insect soaks up its meal:

The mosquito saliva triggers your immune system to release histamines to the bite, which lead to the inflammatory response that makes the area red and swollen, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology

Do whatever you can not to scratch the bites â€" doing so can break the skin, allowing bacteria in that could lead to an infection.

And if the itch is too much to bear, apply an antihistamine cream or gel to the area, or take an antihistamine pill, recommends the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Look for "Diphenhydramine" in the ingredients list (Benadryl has it). Both the cream and the pills can be found over the counter and are pretty inexpensive.

Studies have also shown that cold can reduce histamine-induced itching, so an ice cube can work in a pinch if you don't have an antihistamine on hand.

Despite numerous studies which conclude that long commutes are bad for a person, Leonie believes that a lot depends on perception. People see homelessness as well as the permanent need to move somewhere differently when they are traveling as tourists abroad, while “no one would perceive it as a sort of a trip in the home country,” she says as quoted by Der Spiegel.

She also sees herself as a traveler rather than as a commuter or a homeless person. She claims it gives her a feeling of independence. “I have so much freedom, which also involves taking important decisions. I have to ask myself constantly, what I want and what I must do,” Leonie was quoted as saying by Der Spiegel.

“Most of my friends really like the idea, although some consider it to be quite adventurous. Others, however, have reacted more negatively: They feel offended by the fact that I question the ordinary way of life and living,” she said.

“I want to inspire people to question their habits and the things they consider to be normal,” Muller told the Post. “There are always more opportunities than one thinks there are. The next adventure is waiting just around the corner â€" provided that you want to find it.”

The choice has given her financial benefits, as she presently needs to pay only $380 for the monthly train ticket, rather than some $450 for rent.

She often travels at night, although she still prefers to stay with friends or relatives for a night, and is frequently accommodated by her boyfriend, mother or grandmother.

Leonie claims she really enjoys her life on trains as it gives her liberty.

“I really feel at home on trains, and can visit so many more friends and cities. It’s like being on vacation all the time,” she said.

“I read, I write, I look out of the window and I meet nice people all the time. There's always something to do on trains,” she told German TV station SWR in an interview.

Leonie Muller sees her unusual housing choice as an experiment aimed at understanding what a temporary homelessness can do to a person. Her move also has an academic purpose as she is documenting her experience in a blog and plans to write her undergraduate paper based on these findings.

“It all started with a dispute I had with my landlord. I instantly decided I didn't want to live there anymore â€" and then I realized: Actually, I didn't want to live anywhere anymore,” she said in a letter to the Washington Post.

She also stated that her boyfriend gave her the idea make the life change when he noted that she was spending too much time commuting between Cologne, where he lived, her flat in Stuttgart and her college in Tubingen. He helped her understand that she did not spend much time at home anyway, reported by Germany’s Der Spiegel.

Now, Leonie has literally lived on trains for almost half a year, washing her hair in train bathrooms and writing her college papers while traveling at speeds of up to 190 mph. Her entire life now fits in a small backpack containing her clothes, her tablet computer, college documents and a bag for toiletries.

She travels some 1,200 - 2,000 kilometer per week on average, making trips between her college, her boyfriend’s apartment in Cologne, her grandmother’s house in Bielfeld and Berlin, where her mother lives.

A German college student has lived on the move for half a year after switching her rented flat for a monthly ticket to freely travel on any train in the country. She calls her move an experiment that “questions people’s habits” and broadens opportunities.

Leonie Muller, a German who studies in Tubingen, decided to give up her apartment in spring this year and start a new life without being confined to a permanent residence. She bought a monthly train ticket instead and now lives the life of a modern nomad.

The study linking selfies to stampedes was conducted by volunteers linked to Kumbathon-TCS Gappa Goshti platform, an online collaboration to help officials monitor the mela.

“Since July 13, our volunteers on the field have been collecting data which showed that people stop to take selfies. They also climb to dangerous spots to take selfies,” said Sandip Shinde, CEO of Kumbhathon.

According to Nashik municipal commissioner Dr Pravin Gedam, the curb on selfies in select zones and dates was implemented after a meeting with police officers and local authorities.

The ‘No Selfie Zone’ will be strictly maintained during the days of the “Shahi Snan” on September 13 and 18 in Nashik and September 13 and 25 at Trimbakeshwar, officials said.

“They are applicable only on the days of the holy dip (the first one was on August 29) as we don’t want to take away from the festive mood on other days,” Gedam said.

Fearing stampedes, No Selfie Zone is up at Nashik Kumbh
Enforced by the local administration, the ban in select zones and on specific days was the result of a “human behaviour study” conducted by over 100 volunteers.

On August29, pilgrims at the Kumbh Mela came across banners and boards near the ghats in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar carrying an unusual message â€" No Selfie Zone.

Enforced by the local administration, the ban in select zones and on specific days was the result of a “human behaviour study” conducted by over 100 volunteers who warned officials that selfies could lead to stampedes, particularly during the traditional “Shahi Snan”.

Officials have so far recorded the arrival of 22 lakh pilgrims in Nashik and at least six lakh in Trimbakeshwar ever since the ceremonial flag was hoisted to mark the beginning of the religious congregation on July 14.

Another member said he had been receiving P15,000 bi-monthly from Klikmart Reward and a ranking member had reportedly bought a new car from the proceeds of his investment return from Klikmart.

This enticed others to join the shopping club.

However, NBI-7 Special Investigator Agapito Gierran said their raid was in order.

Local proprietors and officers or the management team of Klikmart Reward, for their part, assured that pay-out of members will continue.

It would be business as usual after the eight employees and members of Klikmart Reward detained after the raid managed to post bail of P40,000 each.

Geomides Hinay, who introduced himself as the spokesperson of the company, assured this.

Hinay also said they would file a “motion to quash the search warrant”, questioning the inclusion of RA 9165 [the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002] as one of the laws allegedly violated as stated in the search warrant.

This is amid Gierran’s explanation that it was just a typographical error and that they only intended to implement a search warrant related to an alleged violation of RA 8799 or The Securities Regulations Code.

Hinay also added that the NBI team should have been accompanied by a team from the Securities and Exchange Commission during the raid.

Hinay also said Klikmart Reward had applied with SEC, a business on “wholesaling”.

In fact, they are supplying and selling grocery items to the members.

Hibaya said DTI-Bohol is now looking into Klikmart Reward, a shopping club operating in Tagbilaran City, which a team from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI)-7 regional office had just raided on Thursday night last week for alleged violations of Republic Act 8799 or The Securities Regulations Code.

Hibaya, however, said they could not yet determine as of now, the nature of Klikmart Reward’s organization, but DTI-Bohol will act on any complaint the might be raised.

The raid on Klikmart Reward disappointed satisfied members, most of them professionals and educated members of the Boholano community.

Members of Klikmart Reward attested that they made the right investment with the said shopping club.

According to members, Klikmart Reward only require a minimum investment of P1,500 per member which would grow to P2,000 within a month.

A member said she withdrew her time deposit from the bank and invested an amount of P30,000 which grew to P40,000 within a month.

RAID. Agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) raided the offices of Klikmart Rewards along Palma St. Last week for violation of R.A. 8799 of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The popularity now of business schemes that assure fast return of investment such as in networking and pyramiding organizations, Boholanos have to be vigilant against the proliferation of scammers taking advantage of the established track record of legitimate entities.

Joe Hibaya, chief of the Consumer Welfare and Business Regulation Division of the provincial office of theDepartment of Trade and Industry, warned the public from getting lured by lucrative offers of some groups to grow their money in just a short period of time.

Hibaya noted that networking and pyramiding systems now get impressive responses from enterprising individuals who want to grow their money in schemes that offer fast and high percentage of returns of investment.

He said the public should think twice how it would be possible for a company to offer such return of investment that fast without sacrificing other factors.

Weird and Extreme / Museum of Toilets
September 12, 2015, 05:25:00 PM
The Sulabh International Museum of Toilets in Delhi is a museum run by the Sulabh International, which is dedicated to the global history of sanitation and toilets. According to Time magazine, the museum is one of the weirdest museums among the "10 museums around the world that are anything but mundane". It was established in 1992 by Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, a social activist, founder of Sulabh Sanitation and Social Reform Movement, recipient of national and international awards including the Stockholm Water Prize in 2009. His objective in establishing this museum was to highlight the need to address the problems of the sanitation sector in the country, considering the efforts made in various parts of the world in this field since the third millennium BC. --Wiki

Berlin (AFP) - Muslim radicals in Germany are trying to recruit some of the growing numbers of asylum seekers reaching the country, according to intelligence services quoted by the German news agency DPA.

The Islamic extremists "are trying to approach the young unaccompanied refugees, who arrive in our country without their families and are particularly looking for contacts and support," a spokesman for the intelligence service in the southern state of Bavaria told DPA.

He said many of the youths are approached around reception centres but also at Munich railway station where many of the asylum seekers have arrived from Hungary and Austria in recent days.

The Islamic extremists "want to take advantage of the insecurity and distress of the refugees," he said.

On Tuesday, the intelligence services in North Rhine-Westphalia reported similar contacts in their region, noting that Islamic radicals were approaching asylum seekers through fake charities.

"We are going to inform the employees of the reception centres and make them aware of this situation and the methods used for these attempts to approach" the young refugees, said a spokesman in the state, also quoted by DPA.

Under the quota system in Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria are the two regions that receive the most asylum seekers, with 21 percent and 15 percent respectively.

Germany expects to receive 800,000 asylum seekers this year, four times more than last year. Syrians, who are fleeing their war-torn country, form the largest group.

Ian Glover, who headed up the National Crime Agency investigation, described them as "by far the worst paedophile group I have ever investigated".

He said they had treated children "as a commodity, to be passed on to others, to be filmed, to be abused and that abuse shown to other paedophiles as a form of currency, so they can get other material back".

Mr Glover said the most important factor had been protecting the children involved, both in this court case and the wider operation, and as a result more than 200 "packages" - intelligence gathered during the inquiry - had been sent to other forces, mostly overseas. Further convictions are expected in the UK and abroad, he said.

The investigation identified three victims but police have put measures in place to protect another 21 children found to be at risk.

Det Ch Insp Simon Crisp, from Avon and Somerset Constabulary, said: "The extremity of the offending in this case is horrifying, but child abuse of this nature is rare."
#6152
This triggered the uncovering of an organised crime group, and the resulting inquiry was led by the National Crime Agency (NCA).

•Robin Hollyson, 31, from Bedfordshire, was sentenced to 24 years in prison and a further eight years on licence. He was filmed abusing the baby.

•Christopher Knight, 35, from Manchester, was jailed for 18 years, with an extension of six years on licence.

•Matthew Stansfield, 35, from Hampshire was jailed for 14 years.

•Adam Toms, 33, from Somerset, received a 12-year sentence, and four years on licence.

•John Denham, 50, from Wiltshire - previously known as Benjamin Harrop - was jailed for eight years plus four years on licence.

•Matthew Lisk, 32, from East Sussex, was jailed for four years, plus an extension of three years on licence.

•David Harsley, 51, from East Yorkshire, was jailed for two years.

All were placed on the sex offenders register for life, except for Harsley. The judge has yet to determine how long he will be on the register for.

"What you did is contrary to all nature and humanity and you each appear to have a chilling tendency to centre the world on yourselves and your depraved desires without regard for the innocent and vulnerable."

John Brown, from the the NSPCC, said the gravity of the offending is "difficult to comprehend" and the children involved may be affected in later life.

He said: "It may be that they don't have a recollection of what's happened, but trauma can manifest itself in later years so I think that's really important to watch out for.

"Those babies and those children are going to need to be monitored and they need to have on-going longer-term support, and their families as well."

The inquiry began in September 2014 when defendant Adam Toms dialled 999 and was heard crying down the line.

He was arrested after officers were sent to his home following concerns for his welfare and he admitted sexually abusing a child under the age of five.
#6154
The group, who lived at addresses across England, raped and assaulted three children - a baby, a toddler and a young child - between 2013 and 2014.

Bristol Crown Court heard the men groomed families to get to children, in one case targeting a pregnant woman in order to abuse her baby after its birth.

They would stream and watch attacks live online, providing encouragement to those carrying out abuse. They also shared advice over online chat logs about how to drug young victims.

The judge said: "In the worst nightmare, from the very deepest recesses of the mind, at the darkest hour of the night, few can have imagined the terrifying depravity which you men admit."

He said the depths they sank to were "shocking to all decent people", "provokes tears in many and makes others feel physically sick".

Clockwise from top left: John Denham, Matthew Stansfield, Adam Toms, Matthew Lisk, Robin Hollyson, Christopher Knight and David Harsley

Seven paedophiles who preyed on a baby and young children acted "beyond human instinct" and were guilty of "terrifying depravity", a judge said.

Jailing them, Judge Julian Lambert said the men had engaged in "the most grossly deviant behaviour imaginable".

He said what they had done made some feel "physically sick".

The prison sentences issued to the gang members, who streamed some attacks on the internet, range from two years to 24 years.

The court was told the men would drive hundreds of miles for a chance to rape or abuse a child.

(SVB)

Valery Spiridonov who has put himself forward to have the world's first head transplant is going to meet the surgeon. (CEN)

A man set to become the world’s first head transplant patient has scheduled the procedure for December 2017.

Valery Spiridonov, 30, was diagnosed with a genetic muscle-wasting condition called Werdnig-Hoffmann disease, and volunteered for the procedure despite the risks involved, Central European News (CEN) reported.

“When I realized that I could participate in something really big and important, I had no doubt left in my mind and started to work in this direction,” Spiridonov, a Russian computer scientist, told CEN. “The only thing I feel is the sense of pleasant impatience, like I have been preparing for something important all my life and it is starting to happen.”

Dr. Sergio Canavero, an Italian neurosurgeon, will perform the procedure on Spiridonov. The procedure is expected to last up to 36 hours, and it will require Spiridonov’s head be cooled as well as the donor’s body to extend the period during which the cells can survive without oxygen, CEN reported.

“According to Canavero’s calculations, if everything goes to plan, two years is the time frame needed to verify all scientific calculations and plan the procedure’s details,” Spiridonov told CEN. “It isn’t a race. No doubt, the surgery will be done once the doctor and the experts are 99 percent sure of its success.”

Spiridonov joked that first thing he plans to do after the procedure is go on a vacation.

“But on a serious note, this operation is aimed at restoring independence of severely disabled people. Once I get it back I’ll see what the life of a healthier person looks like,” he said.

The data looks grim.

China’s economy has been on a rollercoaster ride for the past few months, and the latest data out of the world’s second largest nation isn’t getting much better.

Here’s a quick rundown on the situation.

The background

Since mid-June, the main stock index in Shanghai is down about 40%. Its stock-index futures market, the world’s biggest, hit record lows on Wednesday after falling 99% from June highs.

At the same time, the nation has struggled to stabilize its currency. The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) devalued the yuan by about 2% in early August, an unexpected move that brought the currency’s value closer to what the market believes it ought to be. It also may help China’s export sector.

But Chinese officials have been intervening to stop the yuan from going into freefall, which led to a $94 billion decline in its foreign currency reserves last month.

Latest update

The greatest risk currently for China is deflation, which could slow economic growth considerably.

China’s Producer Price Index (PPI), a measure of change in the price companies receive for their output, fell 5.9% in August, a much steeper decline than expected. The drop cut into profits at Chinese firms, which has already led to layoffs.

The mixes themselves are not prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), which sets the standards that USADA purports to follow. However, their intravenous administration is prohibited by WADA.

More specifically, the 2015 WADA “Prohibited Substances and Methods List” states, “Intravenous infusions and/or injections of more than 50 ml per 6 hour period are prohibited except for those legitimately received in the course of hospital admissions, surgical procedures, or clinical investigations.”

This prohibition is in effect at all times that the athlete is subject to testing. It exists because, in addition to being administered for the purpose of adding specific substances to a person’s body, an IV infusion can dilute or mask the presence of another substance that is already in the recipient’s system or might be added to it in the near future.

What happened next with regard to Mayweather is extremely troubling.

CAN BOXING TRUST USADA?
QUESTIONS SURROUND DRUG TESTING FOR MAYWEATHER-PACQUIAO AND OTHER BOUTS

By Thomas Hauser

Shortly after 3 p.m. on Friday, May 1, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao weighed in for their historic encounter that would be contested the following night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Later on Friday afternoon, collection agents for the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), which had been contracted to oversee drug testing for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, went to Mayweather’s Las Vegas home to conduct a random unannounced drug test.

The collection agents found evidence of an IV being administered to Mayweather. Bob Bennett, the executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which had jurisdiction over the fight, says that USADA did not tell the commission whether the IV was actually being administered when the agents arrived. USADA did later advise the NSAC that Mayweather’s medical team told its agents that the IV was administered to address concerns related to dehydration.

Mayweather’s medical team also told the collection agents that the IV consisted of two separate mixes. The first was a mixture of 250 milliliters of saline and multi-vitamins. The second was a 500-milliliter mixture of saline and Vitamin C. Seven hundred and fifty milliliters equals 25.361 ounces, an amount equal to roughly 16 percent of the blood normally present in an average adult male.

And let's not forget that the US has more aircraft carriers than the rest of the world combined.

* India's second aircraft carrier is not pictured in this graphic.
#6192
To put things in perspective, this graphic shows the relative sizes of aircraft carriers from around the world.

Note that the USS Gerald R. Ford pictured in this graphic is slightly larger than the USS Nimitz aircraft carriers that now operate in the US Navy, but both vessels displace 102,000 tons.
#6193
The US leads the world in aircraft carriers by far, and it is developing an even larger class of aircraft carrier to replace aging members of the fleet.

A Gerald R. Ford-class US Navy aircraft carrier.
#6194
The USS Abraham Lincoln, one of the US Navy's 10 Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, is larger and carries more planes, and it features catapults to launch heavier planes, thus the flat runway.

#6195
China's southern neighbor India operates two smaller aircraft carriers, but they are much more reliable. In 2014, the Liaoning experienced unexpected power failures while at sea.

India's Vikramaditya aircraft carrier.
#6196
The Kuznetsov, like the Liaoning, lacks the catapults used by US vessels to launch heavier planes, but it carries offensive weapons of its own.

Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier.

#6197
The Admiral Kuznetsov, which the Liaoning is based on, is Russia's sole aircraft carrier. The ships have the same size and speed, and they both feature the "ski jump" platform.

Russia's Admiral Kuznetsov.
#6198
The Liaoning's particulars and capabilities sound impressive.

#6199
This is China's only aircraft carrier, the Liaoning. Like much of China's military hardware, the Liaoning is a reworking of an older Russian-made model.

An epic military parade earlier this month showed off some of the Chinese military's new toys, unveiling heavy vehicles in maritime camouflage as the country's island-building in the South China Sea sits in US military planners' minds.

So how does China stack up to other world powers when it comes to aircraft carriers, one of the biggest factors in air and sea dominance?

Take a look at the photos and graphics below to get an idea of China's naval power:
