LOS ANGELES (Reuters) â€" A Chinese man was arrested on Tuesday for creating a fake U.S. Army unit and selling immigrants on the idea that joining the squad was a path to citizenship, authorities said.

Yupeng Deng, 51, allegedly gave his "recruits" military uniforms, had them parade in a Los Angeles suburb and took them to the decommissioned USS Midway aircraft carrier, which is a museum in San Diego.

Deng charged more than 100 fellow Chinese nationals a fee of between $300 and $450 to join the fake Army unit, according to the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office.

He called his bogus squad the U.S. Army/Military Special Forces Reserve unit, or MSFR for short, and he gave himself the lofty title of "supreme commander," prosecutors said.

Aside from telling recruits that belonging to the unit was a path to U.S. citizenship, Deng also urged them to pay him cash for higher military rank, according to prosecutors.

He also allegedly provided them with fake documents and phony military identification cards.

Deng, a resident of the Los Angeles suburb of El Monte, was arrested on Tuesday by sheriff's deputies.

He was charged with theft by false pretenses, manufacturing deceptive government documents and counterfeit of an official government seal.

Deng faces up to eight years in prison if convicted. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday, and is being held on $500,000 bail.

Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the District Attorney's Office, declined to comment on how Deng was caught.

"All the details and evidence will come out in a preliminary hearing," she said. (Reporting by Alex Dobuzinskis: Editing by Peter Bohan)

Urine is not, as many believe, the excess water from food and liquids that goes through the intestines and is ejected from the body as "waste". It is much different and much more. When you eat, the food you ingest is eventually broken down in the stomach and intestines into extremely small molecules. These molecules are absorbed into tiny tubules in the intestinal wall and then pass through these tubes into the blood stream.

The blood circulates throughout your body carrying these food molecules and other nutrients, along with critical immune defense and regulating elements such as red and white blood cells, antibodies, plasma, microscopic proteins, hormones, enzymes, etc., which are all manufactured at different locations in the body.

As the blood circulates, it passes through the liver where toxins are removed and later excreted from the body in the form of solid waste. Eventually, this now purified "cleaned" blood makes its way to the kidneys. When blood enters the kidneys it is filtered through an immensely complex and intricate system of minute tubules called nephron through which the blood is literally "squeezed" at high pressure. This filtering process removes excess amounts of water, salts and other elements in the blood that your body does not need at the time.

These excess elements are collected within the kidney in the form of a purified, sterile, watery solution called urine. Many of the constituents of this filtered watery solution, or urine, are then reabsorbed by the nephron and delivered back into the bloodstream. The remainder of the urine passes out of the kidneys into the bladder and is then excreted from the body.

The function of the kidneys is to keep the various elements in your blood balanced. When your body doesn't need something at a particular time, it is excreted - not because it is toxic or poisonous or bad for the body, but simply because the body does not need that particular element at the time.

Medical researchers have discovered that many of the elements of the blood that are found in urine have enormous medicinal value, and when reintroduced to the body, they boost the body's immune defenses and stimulate healing in a way that nothing else does. (More at: http://biomedx.com/urine/)

The ILO earlier raised the alarm over the estimated 2.4 million Filipino children working in dangerous areas such as sex trade, mining and factories. Widespread poverty has supposedly driven these children to work as helpers, street vendors, farm workers, among others.

To call sex trade as a "dangerous area" for children to work in is the most appalling official understatement I've heard in a good while.  :P

No doubt about it. But the crucial point is the age of the ATM machine. If the ATM machine is under 18 years of age, no way. If 18-21, written consent of the parent bank is needed.

History / Carbon Footprint and Al Gore
April 12, 2011, 07:24:20 PM

At his suburban Nashville home, Ex-Vice President Al Gore enjoyed the Oscar awarded to “An Inconvenient Truth,” the documentary on global warming in which he starred. But the Tennessee Center for Policy Research gained access to Gore’s utility bills for two years and published the gas and electric bills for his 20-room home and pool house. It turned out the home devoured nearly 221,000 kilowatt-hours in 2006, more than 20 times the national average of 10,656 kilowatt-hours. The Center’s president, Drew Johnson said, “If this were any other person with $30,000-a-year in utility bills, I wouldn’t care. But he tells other people how to live and he’s not following his own rules.”

Yuri Gagarin: 50th anniversary of the first man in space

In the West, memories of the Space Race are dominated by Neil Armstrong and Apollo. But in Russia, it is the cult of Gagarin that rules, says Richard Orange.

It was only once dawn broke on the icy steppe that the small, shivering crowd could clearly make out the grinning face of Yuri Gagarin. Fifty years, almost to the day, after the Soviet cosmonaut became the first human being to travel into space, an image from the day of the launch had been painted onto the hulking Soyuz rocket, which was being tugged across the plain by an ageing diesel train. As the rocket was winched into its launch position, the face swivelled upright. Alongside it was the word “Poyekali”, or “Let’s go”, Gagarin’s final statement before he was launched into history.

In the West, memories of the Space Race are dominated by Neil Armstrong and Apollo. But in Russia, it is the cult of Gagarin that rules. Last Thursday, prime minister Vladimir Putin visited Gagarin’s hometown near Moscow, and tonight he hosts a glittering party at the Kremlin. In Baikonur â€" the Russian space agency’s launch station, now rented from the Kazakh government â€" there will be a star-studded reception, for which many former cosmonauts have been flown in from Moscow, and a concert in the city’s main stadium.

According to Andrea Rose, a director of the British Council who is behind plans to erect a statue of Gagarin in London, this veneration is because Gagarin is “the one untarnished figure from the Soviet era”. And partly, it is because of the historical nature of his accomplishment. “I truly believe on that day… humanity became a different species,” says Ron Garan, a Nasa astronaut and one of the crew of last Tuesday’s Soyuz. “We were no longer confined to the boundaries of the earth.”

To commemorate the 1961 anniversary, the Russian space agency went all out for Garan’s launch, given that he and his two Russian companions would be the last humans to head into space before April 12. As well as the painting, the rocket was renamed “Gagarin”. For a launchpad, they chose “Gagarin’s Start”, where his epic journey began.

The strange thing, however, is that they need hardly have bothered. At Baikonur, it is impossible to escape the cosmonaut's legacy: for every Soyuz launch, a complex cult of Gagarin dictates almost every detail of the preparations.

History / Yuri Gagarin

Yuri Gagarin â€" 50th anniversary of first man in space. Yuri Gagarin launched into space in Vostok 1 on 12th of April 1961 and the mission lasted for 108 minutes. It took 50 years and now everyone can book a flight to space with Virgin Galactic, well at least those who have too much money can. Maybe 50 years from now space travel is like intercontinental flights nowadays.

MANILA, Philippines -- Shamcey Supsup, a magna cum laude graduate from the University of the Philippines who says she values a good education over fame and fortune, won Sunday night's Binibining Pilipinas pageant.

The 24-year-old General Santos beauty, who also is an architecture board exams topnotcher, will represent the country in the Miss Universe pageant in Brazil in November.

Her victory came as no surprise. Early in the competition, she received three special awards -- Miss Talent, Miss Philippine Airlines and Miss Cream Silk.

Donning three sashes and clasping bouquets in her arms, Supsup gained more confidence even before the swimsuit and evening gown competitions started.

Hugh Wilson, Consul General of the Australian Embassy, asked Supsup during the question-and-answer portion what worthy cause she supported.

"Valuing education," she replied. "You can have money. You can have fame. But in the end it can be taken from you. But education is something that cannot be taken away from you."

Her response was punctuated with a thunderous applause from the audience at the Araneta coliseum.

Supsup took home a P500,000 management contract from the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI), P50,000 from Cream Silk, a trip for two to the United States, as well as products and services from the pageant's sponsors.

Isabella Manjon, a 24-year-old nurse, bagged the Binibining Pilipinas-Tourism title and pocketed a P500,000 management contract from BPCI, and products and service from the sponsors. She will serve as an ambassador of Philippine tourism.

When asked by ABS-CBN publishing head Ernie Lopez if a father can carry out the duties of a mother and vice versa, Manjon said, "God made us all equal. And if we are equally made, then we can do everything in God's grace."

But perhaps the happiest person that evening was newly proclaimed Binibining Pilipinas-International Diane Necio. The Albay lass took an unprecedented risk and rescinded the first runner up spot she earned in last year's pageant so she could join again this year, also giving up part of her prize package by doing so.

Necio will represent the country in the Miss International pageant, where the Philippines already won four times. She awaits a red carpet welcome on her return to Legazpi City, courtesy of Albay Governor Joey Salceda.

She also took home a P500,000 management contract from BPCI, a trip for two to Japan to meet the organizers of the Miss International pageant, as well as other products and services from the pageant's sponsors.

Rounding up the top five were first runner up Janine Tugonon and second runner up Mary Jean Lastimosa.

Tugonon was a campus queen in the University of Santo Tomas, where she was proclaimed 2010 Miss Thomasian Personality. Lastimosa, former Mutya ng Dabaw and Reyna ng Aliwan, was predicted by many to bag the Best in Swimsuit award with her excellent form.

The Best in Swimsuit award went to basketball varsity player Queenie Rehman, while Bulacan lass Luzelle Felipe took home the Best in Long Gown trophy. Both were among the 15 semifinalists.

Sports Science student Samantha Purvor was voted by her fellow candidates as Miss Friendship, while Angelia Ong was proclaimed "The Face of Binibining Pilipinas 2011" for garnering the most number of text votes.

There was a complete shutout of ABS-CBN wards in the pageant. The partner network's artists failed to advance to the semifinals.

Resigned Mutya ng Pilipinas winner Zephorah Mayon, who was once a "Pinoy Big Brother" housemate and "Wheel of Fortune" board lady, went home empty-handed along with former "Deal or No Deal" briefcase lady Chloe McCully and "Close-Up to Fame" winner Arabella Hanesh, a former Mutya ng Pilipinas runner up.

In the pageant's previous editions, GMA network's Kapuso talents were recognized -- Krista Kleiner was crowned 2010 Bibining Pilipinas-International while Rich Asuncion finished first runner up in 2009. Not on Sunday.

Miss Universe 1973 Margie Moran-Floirendo, cager Alex Cabagnot, Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda and Armed Forces Chief of Staff Eduardo Oban Jr. were among the judges.

Miss Universe 1999 first runner up Miriam Quiambao and Miss International 2005 Precious Lara Quigaman shared hosting chores with screen hunk Derek Ramsay and "mega daughter" KC Concepcion. With a report from Mar S. Arguelles, Inquirer Southern Luzon

Thanks, too, for sharing. Being reminded of life's humdrum verities somehow does make a difference in the quality of one's day.
